Here is the real State of The Union:

In 2018 we have a country led by a President who was actively promoted to office by a violently hostile enemy in Russia. The President has no moral compass other than what can benefit him directly through public adoration, humiliation of enemies both real and perceived, and monetary gain.

We have a Republican dominated Congress actively sabotaging the Constitution via ignoring Presidential misconduct, abusing separation of powers, and overt lawbreaking including what can only be described as Treason in favor of a violently hostile foreign power in order to advance a very particular political and economic agenda.

And most importanly, we have a full 35% or so of the general population including most white people and over 70% of white men either complying with or actively promoting this power grab.

The state of the union can be described as a minority-led fascism. I cannot think of a previous country in history that a similar set of circumstances all collide together and I do not know what the outcome will be.

CL’d from last thread…

I watched a Vice show about how the prison system works in Louisiana. It’s is truly slavery. Prisoners (read: blacks with minor pot possession convictions) staff the state house and serve lawmakers (read: white fat cat politicians). Sheriffs get a stipend for each day a prisoner they arrested is incarcerated. The money just piles on up.

Think the good ole boys in Louisiana want to change the pot laws and lose their slaves, er I mean guaranteed cheap labor?

So seriously, what would Wray’s departure ( voluntary or not ) really accomplish? It would embarrass the Trump Admin, to be sure; if this disgraceful buffoon-circus was even capable of embarrassment- but wouldn’t it be likely that Trump would simply nominate some even worse hack/toady: for whom killing off any and all investigation into the Administration’s wrongdoing would be Job One?

Given the wingnuts braying the other day that McCabe’s resignation was to avoid “indictment,” I think it’s safe to say that Wray’s resignation would only reinforce the perception among the nutters that the “memo” is proof of major crimes on the part of the FBI.

They would celebrate and fill the positions with Trump toadies or Erik Prince thugs. That’s why it is so bad when people resign now from civil service positions in the government because they cannot tolerate their department’s leaders; they are replaced by people whose goal is to destroy everything that makes this country great.

I’m concerned that Wray quitting simply reinforces the new normal, and would do little more than generate a day’s worth of news that would be blotted out by some insane tweet the next morning.

Trump’s now getting his cock sucked publicly by the GOP caucus, because he’s proving to them that nothing matters. Not law, not custom, not reason. There is no consequence for any bad behavior, no advantage to bipartisanship, nothing but simple pursuit of whatever they want without regard for all the things that used to keep them in check.

If Wray quits it makes it somewhat harder to fire Rosenstein and and keep firing his replacements until Trump finds a DOJ replacement willing to yank on Mueller’s leash, at least in the short term.

The entire FBI ain’t quitting. More importantly the ones who quit would just increase the percentage of ones who have no principles. This would be implementing the Republican’s purge for them, speeding the creation a fascist party aligned national police force. They already have ICE, let’s not give them the FBI.

Rep. James Comer’s District is KY-01: most of the southwestern part of the state: and a R +23 district despite a big majority of Democratic registrations. Not to want to perpetuate stereotypes, but how likely is it/how many people in KY-01 have that sophisticated a knowledge of how government - in general - works? Or isn’t it more likely that their attitude is simply “Trump is The Boss: what The Boss says goes”. ?

In a fit of rage last February, I deleted my Facebook account. At first I felt left out of family gossip and jokes, but over time feel like it has helped improve my mood and outlook.

Over the course of 7 years on FB, I was increasingly outraged and dismayed by the views shared by friends and family. I was starting to intensely dislike people I love. I decided it was better for me to go back to seeing family at weddings and funerals and every few years on Thanksgiving, rather than seeing their posts every day. I know it goes both ways and that people probably felt the same way about the firehose of negativity spewing from me on FB.

I understand that others use FB and other social media platforms only for kid photos, etc., but I wasn’t able to compartmentalize like that so in the end I said goodbye for good. A year later I feel like it was the right decision for me.

Then it almost certainly was!

I’m lucky. Most of my friends and relatives on FB think like me, and the one who doesn’t, I just keep blocking the pages he posts crap from. Sorry your experience was so much worse.

Remember when the GOP accused all of us of worshipping Obama, like he was the Messiah?

Speaking of how the GOP did things, when it came out that the IRS may or may not have done some extra scrutiny of Tea Party organizations, they talked about it constantly. Now we have DNC activists having their private information stolen and Dems never talk about it — just generic references to “interference.” What’s up with that?

Wray is planning to issue a rebuttal to the Nunes memo if/when they release it.

FBI director Christopher Wray is prepared to issue a rebuttal if the White House releases Rep. Devin Nunes’s classified memo alleging inappropriate surveillance of the Trump campaign by the FBI and Justice Department, according to CBS News senior national security analyst Fran Townsend. The FBI issued a statement Wednesday that they have “grave concerns” about the memo and the “material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo’s accuracy.”

“I think we have to remember the Nunes memo is an advocacy piece. It’s not a fact piece. This is Chairman Nunes’ summary of what he believes the abuses are. For that reason, it’s one-sided,” Townsend said.

My family research led me to this

The 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act {UK}.
In 1834 the Poor Law Amendment Act was passed by Parliament. This was designed to reduce the cost of looking after the poor as it stopped money going to poor people except in exceptional circumstances. Now if people wanted help they had to go into a workhouse to get it. {Living in the workhouse was designed to be horrific}

Ryan wants to go back to 1834

I think they are who they are and have always been. What they said they hated was just a cover. Cover is now off. They felt safe enough to expose themselves under Trump.

yeah maybe “become” was the wrong word
and maybe they always thought this way
now “exposing themselves” is right - they are certainly acting publicly and without shame

The existence of The Memo was supposed to be the big deal, that the House GOP had this document that showed all sorts of “abuses” by the FBI, which Cobb would argue was evidence that the agency is under a cloud of “controversy” and thus any evidence produced by its investigations rendered “suspect.”

Now? Now its going to be released and the GOP left trying to defend Carter Page.

Which are Republican values. They would vote for any Republican and defend any one of them because they think they’re defending God’s chosen, “imperfect” vessel. Thus, the hypocrisy we’re seeing from them right now. Trump could do pretty much anything unless it is so against their values you could convince them he’s a Trojan Horse, an Anti-Christ. Helps if you invent the god yourself.

Disclaimer: I’m an Episcopalian and I don’t believe this shit.

It’s a theological mess. They point to “render unto Caesar” as their excuse to separate the man “representing” their values from the actual values. So, if Don’s wife got an abortion, well, if he’s promoting a pro-life platform, it’s good, because pro-life is of God, not the Caesar government.

Kicker here is Jesus was talking about paying taxes. Saying you should. So….kinda falls apart there.

They also refer to the imperfections of King David as an example of God choosing broken vessels to deliver his message, among others in the Bible. But those people were humble and repentant. Even the kings. And God’s word had nothing to do with abortion, guns, or anything else they point to. The opposite.

It’s not about “God,” never is. It’s about them and what they want. My beliefs are mine and I don’t say God made me do anything. No excuses.

Problems in the Michigan Democratic Primary for state governor.

bridgemi.com (goes to Michigan Bridge)

Abdul El-Sayed is one of the candidates for the Democratic Primary, a long-time resident of Detroit.

An obscure part of the Michigan state constitution requires that a candidate for governor must be a registered elector (a voter) for four years before running for governor. Mr. El-Sayed was registered to vote in New York in 2015.

Supporters of Mr. El-Sayed are accusing supporters of other hopefuls of being racists.

Some supporters are arguing he should take this to the courts to keep from being excluded from the primary ballot.

Correct, and that’s exactly why I say belief is about people, not God (if you believe in God). People choose what they want to believe according to their personal value systems and none of us can know the will of God either. Plus it’s made very clear that all of us have free will. There is no, “God made me do it.” The Bible is a book written by human beings thousands of years ago. Interesting to study, not a recipe book for life.

So why believe in God? No reason. I like the thought that someone watches over me when I sleep at night. Others choose not to believe that. Doesn’t matter to me what people believe. We’re all responsible for our own behavior so my question on the Nature Of Man is, “Is he an asshole? Yes? I don’t give a shit what he believes, he’s an asshole.”

The guy wasn’t accused of a crime while he was an aide of Schwartzeneggar, this is something that happened recently. Schwartzeneggar signed a bill while governor to combat human trafficking. If something comes out that shows that Schwartzeneggar was made aware of similar actions (and to be clear this guy wasn’t part of the trafficking ring, he was a john) while he was an adviser, then yes, Schwartzeneggar should face scrutiny and explain himself.
