Declaration of Trade War has now been signed.
Very long so I won’t put it here. He (or likely his lackies) lay out the justification for steel and aluminum tariffs.
One section:
(4) Within 10 days after the date of this proclamation, the Secretary shall issue procedures for the requests for exclusion described in clause 3 of this proclamation. The issuance of such procedures is exempt from Executive Order 13771 of January 30, 2017 (Reducing Regulation and Controlling Regulatory Costs).

Issued a trade war declaration and then passes on the actual details that make it tick.
As I suspected, Trump announced a trade war and then is hoping no one notices when he ultimately doesn’t name any actual countries he’s targeting with those tariffs.
Or, alternatively, he names them and it turns out to be counterproductive because those countries already have signaled that they’ll be targeting specific goods - like Harleys, bourbons/whiskeys, and other domestic products that are produced in red state areas.

The US Right has discovered that many of the political ‘benefits’ of a Nazi-style SA of violent thugs can be achieved via stochastic terrorism. The RW powers that be simply turn up their propaganda to a fever pitch, and the law of large numbers takes care of the rest.
For example, the US badly needs an anti-NRA advocacy group that aggressively goes after the NRA with the truth about what the NRA has become. But the leadership of such an anti-NRA organization would be under serious threat from randomly agitated gun nuts.

Right, tariffs will “balance the playing field” because it’ll magically make US steel competitive with foreign imports, but raising taxes on businesses won’t do anything because those businesses will just pass the costs on to their consumers.

Trump thinks that these tariffs are gonna force steel exporting countries to negotiate “fair” deals with us in order to get out from under the tariffs.
The reality is those countries will flip him off while raising the cost of their products, and the companies that rely upon those imports will simply pass the cost onto their customers because the cost of sourcing out the amount/quality of steel they need from US sources would be higher.
The guy from USW did say they will not turn this into an election issue as they are a union and care about many issues, like healthcare, global warming, etc. So he hopes it isn’t a one issue voter thing.

You mean other than better health care, the opportunity for training, or tried to increase minimum wage? The problem is Democrats just won’t give a blind tease to these workers. Oh, and Obama tried something similar:
Former president Barack Obama put a tariff on Chinese tires in 2009, but it backfired, many economists say. Obama touted the 1,000 jobs saved, but the Peterson Institute says that more than 3,000 jobs were lost in other industries.

I’m no global economist but couldn’t China and maybe some other countries drop their pricing to absorb the tariff and still get their steel into this country at a profit due to their economy and labor? And if true, won’t that just turn the whole damn pissing match into nothing good for anyone?

Slugs for Salt.
Stumbled across this study/report of US steel production, imports, and exports. This was particularly interesting:
Since 2009, apparent consumption (a measure of steel demand) has increasingly outpaced production. The gap between demand and production increased to 19.2 million metric tons in YTD 2017. Imports have captured an increasing share of demand, as shown by the relatively high levels of import penetration in 2014, 2015, and 2016 at 34.4, 33.8, and 30.1 percent, respectively. In YTD 2017, import penetration stood at 33.3 percent, up from 29.8 percent in YTD 2016.
Demand is outpacing supply. So obviously the best way to deal with this is to make the supply even more costly.

There would have to be some sort of additional security device included, and other than like a drop down blast door in addition to the standard man doors, I can’t think of what it would be.

No offense, but I trace my root to Appalachia, I’ve seen what has happened to manufacturing and mining there through my own relations. But I still think any of them who buy into this idea that the people who’ve been screwing them for years suddenly give a fuck about them are fucked in the head.
I’m a Millenial, I’m in a spot to understand that my generation is not simply getting fucked without lube, but also with a sandpaper condom. And I don’t see these tariffs doing me any good. I’m not in the Rust Belt, I’m not going to get a job at a steel foundry. What I am going to get is further in debt as the higher costs of goods and services that will result from these tariffs eats further into my paycheck that hasn’t budged much due to Wealthcare.
But hey, Trump cares about steel workers. Good for them, I guess.//////
Had to go out to lower the flags in the village to half-staff.
Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts has ordered the flag to half staff until March 13 as a mark of respect for former Governor Charles Thone (R). Governor Thone passed away this morning at the age of ninety-four.
He was a WW2 combat officer, and served in a variety of capacities in state and Federal government, as well as veterans organisations, civic organisations, and law firms. He was also the first state governor to support Ronald Reagan’s bid to become President.
The link goes to the very long proclamation Governor Ricketts just issued.

I do not believe this is anywhere near the original mission statement envisioned by President Nixon
Nixon didn’t envision it. Congress passed a law in 1969 creating a Council on Environmental Quality within the office of the Presidency.
In 1970, under pressure from the public, Nixon reorganised the Executive Branch and proposed the EPA, which passed in the House and Senate. He then took credit, as conservatives do.
When EPA first began operation, members of the private sector [business] felt strongly that the environmental protection movement was a passing fad. William Ruckelshaus (first EPA director) stated that he felt pressure to show a public which was deeply skeptical about government’s effectiveness, that EPA could respond effectively to widespread concerns about pollution.

About 300 Cabela’s employees in Sidney have taken Bass Pro’s buyout offer as the outdoors retailer winds down the headquarters operation in Nebraska. They will leave the company this week.
Nearly 400 more Cabela’s workers also “volunteered to exit,” Bass Pro said Thursday, but the company is postponing any action on those people until it determines its needs and what opportunities could be available in Sidney or elsewhere.

If you’re interested, Bass Pro Shops took out an advert in today’s Wall Street Journal offering the giant Cabela’s campus in Sidney for rent to a business for $1 a year. The property is worth tens of millions of dollars.
Bass Pro Shops says that they are concerned that the City of Sidney (population 6,000) will be adversely affected by the massive job cuts as they move the corporate headquarters to Springfield, Missouri. They say they are contacting their vendors about locating business in Sidney to help assuage the massive job losses.
Sidney is sixty miles south of my home. A lot of people around here are employed by Cabela’s in Sidney or their satellite storage facility in Oshkosh (population 800).

Well, to be fair to both Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops, this deal has been in the works for a long time. It was finalised before Trump took office. The buyout plans and move have also been planned for a long time.
This is more of the usual corporate consolidation stuff that’s been going on for decades. Cabela’s was a privately-owned business, and the family wanted to get out of the business. They put their business up for sale, and Bass Pro Shops gave them the best deal.

If America, and Nebraskans, had a more pro-active and positive view of government, there are probably many activities that could be performed quite well in the region, and a few tens of millions of tax dollars dropped in to stimulate change might do great things.

I don’t care if the bookstore was selling copies of the Communist Manifesto and had statues of Lenin and Marx throughout the location. Conservatism has always been thus. Different people, different labels, same authoritarianism. It is the same in every nation, in every time period.
If it had something worthwhile to pitch, it would pitch that. Since it can’t, it must indoctrinate and use propaganda. It requires worshipers (conservatism cannot fail, it can only be failed), it has religious leaders (Goldwater, Reagan, Trump), it has holy books that are misinterpreted (Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations), it has a relentless evil enemy (liberals), it relies on tradition.
It is a religion. You must accept conservatism on faith.

They don’t have the bones anymore, per NPR’s story:
He took a closer look at data gathered in 1940 from skeletal remains recovered by a British expedition to Nikumaroro. The British found a human skull, humeri and radii (both arm bones), a tibia and fibula from the lower leg and two femurs (thigh bones). The bones were sent to Fiji, where they were examined and measured by physician D.W. Hoodless.
But the bones themselves are long gone. After Hoodless examined them, and determining them to be from a stocky European male, they disappeared. The assumption is that either he or someone else in Fiji discarded them.
They reached this new conclusion by re-examining the measurements on record.

Even though this was many years after Earhart, it was still a very daunting task. They removed the rear seat and put in place a huge extra fuel tank. The damn plane was a bomb. You can see the tank in the image of her plane hanging in the Smithsonian Museum at the wiki page linked below.

Should Trump accept, NK will exploit much more, including Trump’s tendency to blab state secrets.

North Korea has a GDP of roughly half of Vermont - the lowest GDP state in the nation. Kim gains legitimacy for his country by bringing the U.S. to the table. He’s no fool. Kim was educated in Switzerland and knows all too well what happened to countries that gave up nuclear programs. All that comes out of this is Trump looking like an idiot and a greater chance of conflict prior to the midterm elections.

And Kim didn’t have to anything to get this meeting. No moratorium on testing, no dismantling of nukes or ICBMs, no promises or concessions. All he had to do was offer a meeting where they would discuss those topics and Trump came running. That totally deflates any attempts that “serious” pundits will make to portray this as a “win” for Trump. Kim gives nothing away and scores a one-on-one meeting with the POTUS. As noted earlier, Obama just had to suggest he’d be open to a meeting with Dinnerjacket and the press blew a collective fuse.

Yep. It has been a dimension that has disgusted since my first trip and meeting with both these Japanese and Americans. ETA: I need to say that I’m posting this because I also have a deep connection to Japan that in no way reflects this in the people I know and am now related to.
White supremacists and Japan: A love story
BY DEBITO ARUDOU
MAR 7, 2018
The Washington Post reported something interesting on Feb. 14: A farm in Virginia put up a sign saying “Resist white supremacy.” And it incurred a surprising amount of online backlash.
Calls for boycotts. Accusations and recriminations. One-star Facebook reviews that had nothing to do with their products.
The article pondered: Who, other than a white supremacist, would object to a message rejecting white supremacy?
But if you’ve ever protested racism in Japan, or read comments sections in Japanese media, you’ll know these reactions have been old hat for nearly two decades.
In fact, this column will argue that online intolerance and attack have been Japan exports.
First, let’s talk about the old hat. It’s been well established in both articles and lawsuits that Japan’s online bullying is rife (see “2channel, the bullies’ forum,” JBC, Feb. 3, 2009), with people libeled and doxxed, and many a personal and professional life destroyed.
But it’s not limited to Japanese-language forums. Anyone critical of Japan gets it, and in English, too.
For example, my blog recently critiqued a Japan Times article on the internationalization of Japan’s youth (“Coming of age: 1 in 8 new adults in Tokyo are not Japanese”). As usual, somebody trolled:
“Why is this a good thing? Japan needs to stay Japanese. Keep your Leftist, neo-Marxist ideology out of Japan. Japan does not want to go down the same Leftist road as Canada, UK, Europe, etc. Japan must remain an ethnostate. Keep the poz (HIV-positive) out. We see how that it’s destroying the West. Multiculturalism and diversity are a cancer, and I hope to never see it in Japan.”
This supremacist bile is common in the Oort cloud of online haters — the habitues of message boards such as 4chan and Reddit, who swarm, thrive and mobilize in anonymous echo chambers.
Like their Japanese counterparts, they consider the racial “other” the enemy, and find inspiration in Japan both as an online community (4chan is in fact the English version of 2chan, and is owned by 2chan’s founder) and, as noted above, as an “ethnostate.”
Consider the notable white supremacists who are Japan fanboys:
Jared Taylor, author and guru of America’s so-called alt-right, is a fluent speaker of Japanese, born in Kobe to missionary parents and schooled in Japan until high school. A self-described white separatist, he believes Japan will be more successful this century than mongrel America due to its “racial and cultural homogeneity.”
Richard Spencer, the white supremacist leader who coined the term “alt-right,” advocates America’s “peaceful ethnic cleansing” into a “white ethnostate.” Cloaking ethno-superiority as “identitarianism” (which means, “you identify with your race, with your people, with your culture”), his spokesman claimed, “Everyone in Japan is an identitarian.”
William Daniel Johnson, chairman of the white nationalist American Freedom Party, wrote a book (and a proposed constitutional amendment) advocating the deportation of all nonwhites from America. Majoring in Japanese in college, he is fluent in the language after his Mormon mission in Tohoku, and prospers under what The Guardian calls “an uncanny connection between Japan and white nationalism in America.”
Even mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik, the neo-Nazi who killed 69 people at a Labor Party island youth retreat in 2011, is an ardent Japanophile. In his manifesto, he specifically praised Japan as “a model country” for avoiding multiculturalism.
Supremacists see Japan as a viable national alternative, not only because Japan can get away with policies that embed racism and keep immigrants out, but also, more importantly, because Japan gets the acceptance and respect of other rich countries regardless.
Japan’s incubators of hate have returned the favor, offering templates for supremacists worldwide to convert their trolling into real political power.
Steve Bannon, the engineer of Donald Trump’s successful presidential election strategy, is another Japan fan. He was here last December at the Japanese Conservative Political Action Conference, proclaiming Prime Minister Shinzo Abe the pioneer of Trumpism — “Trump before Trump.”
According to Joshua Green, in his bestselling book “Devil’s Bargain,” Bannon harnessed the power of online white male hate, “a rolling tumbleweed of wounded male id and aggression.” Recruiting “rootless white males” from the online gaming community into propaganda outlet Breitbart (the “crown jewel of the alt-right’s media universe”), he is now spearheading an international racist social movement.
These rootless white males find succor in Japan. They enjoy one of the world’s largest gaming communities. They are taken in by narratives of subservient women digging white men (The New York Times opined that “exclusively dating Asian women is practically a white-nationalist rite of passage”). And in the land of the hikikomori (extreme antisocial recluses), they find a society making allowances for awkward, introverted people who communicate best without ever leaving their room.
They also find purpose. As noted above, if anyone is critical of Japan’s nerd terrarium, they pile on, like white samurai. Even though by doing so, they encourage the discrimination that affects them adversely.
The white samurai now join the ranks of the other historical figures who have defended Japan from charges of institutionalized racism.
They join the academics, who are compelled (by the “chrysanthemum club” old guard who explain away Japan’s racism as misunderstood cultural foibles, and by the Japanese institutions that fund their departments) to stick to talking about the “nice things” about Japan.
They join the international diplomats and businessmen who seek to preserve “the relationship,” and prioritize trade over human rights….. (more on the linked article).
And Kim waited until Dotard was under lots of pressure before he made the ego play.
I figure Kim Jong Un will play this to the hilt knowing Trump is desperate for some ‘real’ achievement to brag about. Any positive agreement may come at heavy cost to the USA before NK reneges.

Fox News is totally running with this is a win for Trump.

Of course they’re running this as a win. I haven’t checked the coverage, but I’m sure they’re portraying this as a sign of Trump’s “strength.” We rattled the saber so much that Kim came running to the table to negotiate with Trump. Just totally rewrite decades of US-NK relations to portray Trump as the first guy to get a Kim to meet with him one-on-one. That this is North Korea so afraid of being attacked that they want talks with Trump.
And their audience is gonna lap that shit up like it was buttermilk.

Never met a war he didn’t like.
I like how the White House is emphasizing that Kim “talked” with South Korea about denuclearization. Not a agreement or commitment or an understanding, just “talked” about it. My guess is that the “talking” was largely about how Kim doesn’t expect Trump to get something for nothing, that any talk about doing away with nukes is going to involve the very sort of payments that Trump sneered at on the campaign trail as “weakness.”
Oh, and the talk about not conducting any tests? That’s impossible to verify, so the fact that Trump is trumpeting it as a “win” shows he’s so desperate to clutch something that looks like such that he’ll take whatever wafer-thin assurances Kim is willing to throw his way.

All the more reason to believe this meeting is a thin pretext for going to war.
Every last one of you would have dragged Obama had he agreed to 1-on-1 talks without North Korea dismantling its nuclear program.
Trump just gave away what little leverage he had and Jong Un gets a big win by playing Trump’s ego like a fiddle.— lawhawk (@lawhawk) March 9, 2018
If Trump had done as past administrations had done and insisted up multi-party talks, then he might not only face the possibility that his own negotiators would find a path forward that avoided war, but it would also mean that the other parties to the talks might stand in his way by insisting on letting the process work. One-on-one talks lets him claim that the talks “failed” due to Kim’s recalcitrance and move forward with military strikes.

And Ralph Bakshi came to the same conclusion in ‘78: FFS, even Tolkien himself could never quite properly fit old Tom into his legendarium - save as a sort of colorful sideline. IMO, Tim Benzedrine was a much better take on the character… YMMV

Exactly. He’s doing all of the shit he projected on to Obama who didn’t actually do these things.
re: #282 Targetpractice
All the more reason to believe this meeting is a thin pretext for going to war.
That’s probably what Mr Art-of-the-Deal thinks, but as usual he’s wrong. He’s going to have a hard time saving South Korea when South Korea really doesn’t want him to. Unless of course he is actually willing to destroy Seoul in order to save it.
Come to think of it, he is that dumb.
I think this is going to end with all American troops withdrawn from Korea, the North actually ending its nuclear program (they can hit Seoul without it), and the South scared shitless.
I’ll bet Wall Street will be absolutely thrilled with the news of potential war with North Korea when the stock market opens tomorrow. /s

Chicory coffee and beignets?
I never miss that when I’m in NOLA.
re: #298 Anymouse 🌹
North Korea’s allies (China and Russia) might do so. China is pretty adamant they will defend the DPRK if it is attacked without provocation. Russia is also a somewhat lesser ally, and also shares a border with the DPRK.
If we launch even one nuke at North Korea in an attempt to hit hardened research facilities or whatnot, well, at least it will be quick for us here.
You guys are ridiculous. Russia’s not going to get themselves wiped out in order to defend North Korea. Russia’s hope is that North Korea destroys some of our major urban centers and reduces us to a 2nd rate power economically overnight. Our military will follow when we can no longer afford to flush 1 trillion dollars down the toilet designing our next generation weapon system that’s almost as good as the current one.
China’s most likely play is to hope NK takes out some of our bases in the Pacific and then to invade NK from the north to prevent a flood of refugees and maintain a buffer zone between itself and the South.
Both of the countries are served best by letting NK do whatever damage to the US that it can in any confrontation and then moving against NK to secure their interests. Their interest is not served by getting involved in a nuclear exchange with the US and having us plant big glowing mushrooms in their major cities and military bases.

China and Russia are certainly in it for the long game. China has been pretty clear that any attack against North Korea would be responded to, but they could be lying (then never trusted again by any other nation with an agreement with China).
We drop a nuke on North Korea to hit its hardened labs and facilities, the fallout will travel over their nations.
They’re likely to get testy about that.

Rexxon Tillerson, who is in Ethiopia at the moment, issued a statement to try to clean up after Trump’s mess today.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the U.S. is “a long ways from negotiations” with North Korea on Thursday, cautioning that expectations about the diplomatic relations between the two countries should be “realistic.”
“In terms of direct talks with the United States, you ask negotiations and we’re a long ways from negotiations,” Tillerson said of the potential of talks with North Korea during a press conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The U.S. diplomat added: “I think we just need to be very clear-eyed and realistic about it. I think the first step — and I’ve said this before, is to have talks.”
He’s also ready to give away decades of diplomacy for “talks” which may produce nothing.

No fallout issues when we’re hit. The oceans will still be on either side of us when we no longer exist.

I bet our military is thinking they can do some kind of surprise fly in mega-bombing to “end their nuke program” and all it will do is piss off the world and make the US look ever more stupid for having the *cough*, leadership we elected.
Doesn’t our military often make it look like it will just be so easy?
These guys are ageless. Listen to them and you can double your vocabulary.
There’s the image of a man
Who commands a high opinion
But he hides his hatred with a sheepish grin
And beside him flanking closely
Are the boisterous hollow masses
Who lap up whatever trickles in
This intercourse of nature,
This vulgar social pastime
Reflects the lowest mark of our progress
And the few who ride peripheral
Maintain subtle advantage
Fighting hard to abstain and redress
Do you know your place
In the big charade?
Are you more than they?
Leaders and followers
Leaders and followers
Recognition by proximity
And a brand new face
Just a smidgen of success pie
And a pinch of social grace
You can play with the big boys
Or you can tell them what to do
But sooner or later there’s another one like you
The voyeuristic public
Of which we’re all a part
Maintains perspective on the human play
And while many have desires
Of joining in the show
Many turn and go the other way
Tell me do you know your place
In the big parade?
Are you fear and shame?

They join the academics, who are compelled (by the “chrysanthemum club” old guard who explain away Japan’s racism as misunderstood cultural foibles, and by the Japanese institutions that fund their departments) to stick to talking about the “nice things” about Japan.
By 2050, Japan will soon have more ex-cities and villages than ever before. Demographics is future history and in Japan it’s happening at an incredible clip.
And Japan is about as xenophobic as it gets.

No doubt they would be. I’m not an expert on where the weapons labs are located and weather conditions in the region, so I’m not sure what the most likely fallout pattern would be, but I have been ground detonating some 100 kt SLBMs and it looks like the general pattern of fallout is to the northeast and largely remains within NK unless detonated close to the border.
Russian television outlets, which have been silent on the issue of the people poisoned with nerve agents in the United Kingdom, opened up on that topic today.
They warn that “traitor” is one of the most dangerous professions, and the United Kingdom is not the place for a traitor to go. They said there seems to be something wrong there, since so many traitors seem to die there. Maybe the weather or something.

Serkis is a terrific character actor. He deserved an Oscar for Gollum in The Two Towers.
Two questions I’d like a reporter to ask Huckaboo tomorrow: “Does President Trump expect to get President Kim to just give up his nuclear weapons without anything in return?” and “And a followup: If he doesn’t expect that, then how will any deal he can possibly negotiate be different from the deals negotiated by the past three presidents that President Trump has denounced again and again?”
It’s quite the opposite - @POTUS is the mark for China and Russia…. (BTW: Seen your kids lately?) pic.twitter.com/GFofIbuwWL

Pretty sure they’re gone. I think cruise missiles are strictly conventional weapons now.

Shit. They just revised the forecast to a freeze warning, and I have to go out and replace the grow-tunnel cover in the dark.
So there’s this:
Rachael Denhollander and the many women of US Gymnastics have bravely shone a light on sexual assault in sports. pic.twitter.com/esAzxwRsPI
— Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) March 8, 2018
Which I believe was a surprise to Ms. Denhollander’s husband, who is a (currently on hiatus) PhD student at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Denhollander herself was one of the first women to blow the whistle on Larry Nassar and she was instrumental in bringing together the many, many women who were sexually assaulted by this POS.
What’s interesting is that Rachael Denhollander’s work continues. She has taken up for the victims of child abuse within the Sovereign Grace Ministries/Sovereign Grace Churches, whose victimization was credibly covered up by the leadership, headed up by C.J. Mahaney. She’s written statements laying out what she has learned from the information already out there, and those statements are damning against Mahaney.
Mahaney was scheduled to speak in April to 10,000 preachers and wannabes at “Together For The Gospel 2018” in Louisville. (Some of you may remember I have said I would be protesting at this shindig.) Well, Mahaney, under some pressure, withdrew yesterday from this rock festival of preaching, although his withdrawal statement is rather bitter.
I’m still going to protest at Together For The Gospel, although I’m a bit more free now to consider a protest of a pre-session put on by the Alliance Defending Freedom, which has every indication of turning into a LGBT bashfest, because it’s about the so-called “Nashville Statement” from last year. However, there is still the large issue of how nine other speakers and 10K attendees didn’t seem to think there was a problem with a guy credibly accused of covering up child abuse being on the same stage.
Let me put it this way: It was infinitely more acceptable to have CJ Mahaney on the stage, even though there’s credible evidence he covered up child abuse, than to have ANY WOMAN preaching or teaching. Because these guys think we women are somehow permanently poisoned by the alleged sin of Eve.
I’m thinking about asking the men (it’s 95% men attending) to give up their wristbands and forego attending as a demonstration that they don’t agree with the “Together For The Gospel” crowd of the years of passes they’ve given Mahaney. And yes, I know it would be a tough sell. This is a popular thing—there are people asking on Twitter if there are wristbands for sale, for a three-day meeting of the same (now nine) guys blathering on about various dogmas. And yes, I am concerned someone might punch me if I asked them to give up their wristband if I put the transaction as starkly as all that, but it’s an idea I can’t get out of my head.
It’s not enough to just stand out there with a sign. I think I have to get in their faces and ask them—do you really care about child abuse—or does it really not matter because of the spectacular preaching you’re going to hear? (Hint: These guys are DULL.)
re: #347 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.
Pretty sure they’re gone. I think cruise missiles are strictly conventional weapons now.
Sad, really - because that’s precisely the weapon you’d want for this nightmare scenario, in addition to some other things.
I’d sure like to know what those X-37B’s have been doing loitering in space for weeks/months at end (you know those guys who fly those things would love to hoon ‘em past some Russian and Chinese military Eyes In The Sky just to give then a little sniff….)
Panda’s Thumb article plays a popular tune, but I find the analysis a bit … thin:
