I had some interesting training last night, dealing with heavy bleeding wounds, such as gunshot wounds. The first thing we learned was how to use a Combat Application Tourniquet, such as this one. They are actually recommending a tourniquet be applied first if possible on a wound that is losing a lot of blood.

In cases where you can’t use a tourniquet - not available or in an area where a tourniquet cannot be applied, such as the neck - that you pack the wound and/or apply pressure. The instructors had these ammo boxes that had skin set up to look like a gunshot wound, which was connected to an IV bag so they could make liquid flow. We actually had to pack the wound until the flow stopped.

Yup. Stupid as hell. Looks we got all of our birds back home. The RAF launched 4 Tornadoes and the French launched at least 4 Rafales from an unknown location, maybe Larnaca also.

You just don’t telegraph that you are coming without endangering your strike force. Drumpf is an idiot.

That is an overt lie.

re: #191 Varek Raith

Therein lies the problem. I support such a strike as this. Just not from some fucking idiot like Trump and his toadies. They have a tendency to fuck up anything they touch. I’m curious how he will deal with the limitedness of this strike.

re: #230 Anymouse 🌹

I don’t without authorisation from Congress. Conservatives have completely abdicated their Constitutional authority to declare war (which does not have to be a public declaration) in the name of grasping and maintaining power.

re: #15 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

So it was F/A-18’s, and not missiles? The press releases seem a bit confused on that point.

I think probably both, but the mix has not been announced. We certainly sent some F-18 Weasels into Syria before the Allied strike teams arrived to suppress the Syrian radars and SAM systems. There are probably also some post-strike recce birds or drones (kill ‘em with fill-um!) taking pictures to see how we did.

Depending on how much we have degraded the Syrian assets (i.e., blown shit up), I would expect follow-on missions tomorrow night, especially against Syrian strike helicopters and Sukhoi jet bombers. They’ve got 25 helos and around 120 jets. If you want to shut down their ability to deliver chem weapons, those are the obvious targets.

Note:

+/- 8 strike aircraft from from the UK/France plus whatever we threw into the mix isn’t going to kill 145 aircraft. Not even close. Most of their aircraft will be in armored revetments and would require smart bombs. And it appears the UK/French strikes were on Sarin/other war gas production sites.

We’d need to launch at least 70 sorties to kill their strike bombers and helos.

We aren’t going to do that. Too risky to aircrews. I think we probably went in and busted up a few easy targets and pulled a didimau out of there to let them lick their wounds.

We’ll see in the morning, but this looks like a very limited strike scenario.

Considering how complicated the instrument is, I imagine it is frightfully expensive (at least as much or more than a hammered dulcimer).

I have pickups in one of my dulcimers, but you have to have the instrument custom-built or retrofitted (and those aren’t cheap either).

Yup. Conservatives giving the opportunity for any adversary who can to analyze our missiles’ capabilities to develop counters to them, just to drive bad news out of the news cycle.

They will even give away our military secrets in what is mostly a useless exercise (cruise missiles are not really a good weapon against land targets) just to grasp and maintain power.

Added bonus? Fiscal conservatism. Those things ain’t cheap.

You can be sure the DoD is already penciling the cost of those replacements into next year’s budget request. Or salivating at the chance to submit an “emergency” request for additional funds from Congress to replace the munitions expended tonight.

And the fiscal conservatives will try to take it from Veterans Affairs, SNAP, &c

Probably I’ll pick up a VGA cable for my desktop project while I’m walking across campus.

Tonight’s actions, including the speech, especially the speech, is just theatre for Trumpers and anybody else Trump and his new NSC gang can fool.

French electronic music legend Jean Michel Jarre is live at Coachella right now!

Your Coachella Money Is Going to a Right-Wing Billionaire Who Funded Anti-LGBT and Anti-Marijuana Causes (Daily Beast, more at the link):

This weekend, hordes of music lovers and teepee enthusiasts will descend on Indio, California, for the annual Coachella Music Festival. The first big festival of the season, Coachella has a reputation for attracting the worst of the worst: entitled rich kids in knockoff Native headdresses, bankers in bindis, and these people. Think Fyre Festival, but financially solvent.

A few years ago, The Washington Post revealed that the often-problematic festival’s issues went way beyond appropriative accessories. A 2016 report on America’s “enemies of equality” is often cited as blowing the lid off Coachella and its founder, Philip Anschutz, the owner of entertainment conglomerate AEG. The Freedom for All Americans campaign reported that Anschutz, one of the richest people in America with a net worth of $12.9 billion, gave large sums of money to the Alliance Defending Freedom, the National Christian Foundation, and the Family Research Council.

Trump supporters rip decision to strike Syria (Politico)

Some of President Donald Trump’s staunchest backers tore into his decision to attack Syria late Friday night, arguing it was unnecessary, reactionary and even Clinton-esque.

Making sure to magic balance fairy this by invoking Bill Clinton.

“We lost. War machine bombs syria. No evidence Assad did it. Sad warmongers hijacking our nation,” tweeted conservative author and radio host Michael Savage. Savage also posted a video discussing the missile strikes, tearing into Trump’s decision.

And …

“Donald Bush,” tweeted Mike Cernovich, a conservative author and once a staunch supporter of Trump.

“Congratulations to the Trump administration for adopting the same failed foreign policy and ignoring of the constitution as the last two administrations,” tweeted Doug Stafford, a strategist for Sen. Rand Paul’s RANDPAC.

Conservative author Ann Coulter retweeted a series of people questioning military action in Syria — as well as past tweets from Trump himself. Before his presidential bid, Trump argued former President Barack Obama would be foolish to take any action in Syria.

Coulter also quoted a news story about former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe promising he could beat Trump if he ran against him and tweeted, “You might - if you promised no more “stupid wars.”“

But no one should blame Ryan for having a less-than-reliable majority in the House, or the president not being much an asset in the advancement of legislative priorities.

It is true, the whole GOP is to be blamed for relying on a base of support that feels no loyalty even to the party but to its own extreme-right agenda.

So is global warming and that has nothing to do with religion. In fact- global warming makes certain scientists look like a cult themselves.

I see we are going to make this into a science-fest…

Scientists are fully capable of cult-thinking… like every other person.

However, man made/enhanced global warming is very well founded in basic science and is itself not “cult” like. The body of scientific knowledge accumulated over the last 5 centuries is what it is… an accumulation of observations and ever increasingly accurate theories.

We have to keep in mind that post 9/11 the newly popular thing of “blogs” became the collecting venues for the computer owner.

Today Twitter and Facebook take that role, which is why the death-of-blogging idea has been pushed the past couple of years.

I don’t think blogging is dead, it’s just not the short-fuse gossip network that it was in 2002, given Twitter is now the gossip-fest-machine.

Anyway, LGF started off as the toy of Charles (a musician with an inner nerd) and his love of cycling and music was evident.

When 9/11 happened, this blog like so many others became fixated on the aftermath.

The reaction to 9/11 was a real test of this country. In some ways we failed, I think, in living up to our ideals, but, on the other hand, many Americans did push back against irrational hatred. It’s hard to say we took the high moral ground, given the punish-the-Arabs war that Cheney et. al. pushed on GWB and the rest of the US establishment (who because of 9/11 fell all to easily to questionable reasoning about why going to war is a good thing.)

The post-9/11 crowd here had a strong reactionary contingent. Yet, there were some of us who were not really “right-wing” (whatever that means in the end.)

I registered here while I was living in Japan. In those days, during the GWB administration, LGF played a role for me to remain connected to the daily social-feeling here in the US.

Eventually Charles had to free himself of the reactionary right that had clung onto this blog. I’m glad he did, because as these things always go - angry crowds eventually turn into lynching mobs - keeping the hate-right around was only going to make things uglier, especially as the 2008 election approached.

I didn’t participate in the Stein mega-string for some reason. I was back from Iraq by then and should have been around somewhere. Like Charles and some others here, I was actually shocked at the prevalence and virulence of the creationist superstition among then-lizardoids. The subject had rarely come up and had not been as politicized as it would be later, and is now. Even free republic had a pro-evolution faction, long since completely extinct. Looking back on it, I think it was during that period, 2007-8, that the right wing really took control of anti-science and weaponized it as a political force.

161

For example, six people thought this a good argument:

150 DesertSage Apr 20, 2008 • 2:31:43pm 6

I see the evolutionists (or the anti-creationist’s) people here are spinning like crazy….but not one of them has answered my simple question:

WHO CREATED THE PRIMORDIAL SOUP!

Just answer that one, that’s all.

ad hominem: evolutionists is not a thing. The correct term is biologists. Anti-creationist is not a thing either. Creationism has not met the burden of proof (presented evidence to support its assertions).

affirming the consequent: If there is a primordial soup, it must have been created (and therefore there is a creator)

shifting the burden of proof: Just answer that one—up to the creationist to support his position

Wow, I only have a high school education and I think I get the scientific method better than the majority of the creationist commentators on that thread. Claiming eugenics damaged the theory of evolution, Margret Sanger promoted eugenics, all the classics. It is a two thousand comment thread of ad hominem after unsupported assertion after equivocation fallacy (“it’s just a theory”).

I wonder what happened to all those people after they flounced from here?

re: #358 TalkinKamel

Hebrews 11:3 says there are more forces involved during creative/design phases though. Darwinists never study these inactive forces while ID’ers do. Darwinists assume that all forces/’pressures’ are known.

——

Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. (Hebrews 11:3, KJV)

“Faith” being an appropriate way to study anything.

Moreover, science studies all sorts of things which are “not made of things which do not appear” (electromagnetism, gravity, evolution by natural selection, &c)

With that, I’m out. G’night from Tumbleweed Terrace.

Greets and saluts from the resistance in the NYC metro area.

Trump yesterday went out and had his spokeshacks claim that Russia wasn’t tipped off and that this was done without Russia’s knowledge.

Fancy that that Trump lied once again.

Trump was telegraphing that the US would hit Syria for the chemical weapons usage.

Turns out he explicitly warned Russia.

How do we know this happened? Russia had the ships depart Syrian port days before the raid. That’s more proof of the kayfabe that was going on.

And we also know that this was a one-shot deal. There’s no sustained effort and we’ll quickly learn that Trump fired a bunch of missiles that didn’t much of anything (or churned rubble). Those precision strikes precisely hit the intended target: trying to get people to focus on anything but the corruption and criminality in Trumpworld.

It was intended to get media to focus not on Cohen and his lies to Congress about the Prague visit that corroborates yet another part of the dossier on Trump. It was intended to deflect attention.

It’s up to the media to stay on target. Far too many in the media are being used and abused by the admin or are intent on carrying water for the admin so as to maintain their access.

Before he changed to his successful format, I used to listen to Art Bell at night while he was doing a standard current-affairs program.

It was always a bit dryly “libertarian” in that sort of wild-west way. Art would have real curmudgeons call in and complain about the government, etc.

I suspect that Art realized, while having his studio in Vegas, that what makes entertainment popular is the audacity of it all.

His successful show, when he made it all about the fringe, had it’s high moments. At the height of surge of talk-radio, Art’s image would be center of the poster for Premier Radio Network and then Clear Channel, among all the other hosts they syndicated, even edging Limbaugh out of the main spot on the card.

Still, I think Bell’s success gives us a warning about America - that we’re a society of minds twisted by false information and magical beliefs. Bell was vastly superior to his rivals who tried similar stuff.

There were always conspiracy hosts on the radio, but Bell beat them all by being very entertaining. He also had the advantage that he knew quite a bit about radio, the engineering and physics, compared to his competitors, and could sound very, very convincing because of it.

I always wondered if he was surreptitiously paid by the government to spread false information about Area 51 and the testing facilities in the desert.

His worse shows were, I think, when he had on con-men like Whitley Strieber. These guests were very good at fictional stories, and many people bought into them.

Bell was a “worker” in the carney sense.

He was at his best when the callers provided the entertainment. And Phil Hendrie probably did call in as some of the weirder characters. There was one character, a preacher whose name I forget, that was quite the send-up of fundamentalists.

Anyway, Art Bell, RIP.

The mission was, “distract the media and everybody from the investigation that is closing in around me like a noose.” In that regard, it was accomplished spectacularly - for a few days, until the next figurative bombshell lands… at which time there will, no doubt, be more literal bombshells to continue the distraction.

Morning Lizardim from the edge of Snowmageddon. We got a couple of inches of snow to stick last night, and the 40+ mph winds continue unabated. The heavy stuff is supposed to hit tonight, so I have prepped as best I can and we’ll just see what happens.

I don’t disagree with you. I’m just explaining the rationale of what happened last night. Trump felt he needed to distract everybody from Cohen, so he did, in the stupidest way possible. The fact that it doesn’t actually change anything is good, but irrelevant to his line of thinking.

You create a culture where racism is a shameful thing. You make it clear culturally that racists should be ashamed of themselves, instead of being told that their racism is just another point of view, and that anyone who calls them out on it is a fascist trying to suppress their freedom of speech. re: #247 Renaissance_Man

You create a culture where racism is a shameful thing. You make it clear culturally that racists should be ashamed of themselves, instead of being told that their racism is just another point of view, and that anyone who calls them out on it is a fascist trying to suppress their freedom of speech. You create a culture where the most powerful institutions in it condemn this sort of behaviour, instead of normalising and encouraging it.

And you keep standing up to it and reporting it. We needed to find out it was happening.

As much as we all shit on Twitter, as long is it allows people to report these things, it will continue to provide an important service.

I disagree. We don’t have enough outrage or understand that fear can be a survival mechanism for those targeted by racism. Fear should not stop those who aren’t targeted from being affirmatively and loudly anti-racist though.

I simply cannot imagine. My mom’s parents are and were around the same age as Murray. They grew up poor as immigrant miners’ children in South central Pennsylvania and they had their share of hardships but nothing like that. I’m glad we still have men and women like Murray and others with us that remind us that the Holocaust was a real event. And I appreciate Stephen for telling his grandpa’s story. Tough guy. It’s up to the media to stay on target. Far too many in the media are being used and abused by the admin or are intent on carrying water for the admin so as to maintain their access.

The Trump administration is abandoning a Justice Department threat to crack down on recreational marijuana in states where it is legal, a move that could enable cannabis businesses in California and other states that have legalized pot to operate without fear of federal raids and prosecution.
President Trump personally directed the abrupt retreat, which came at the behest of Republican Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado. White House officials confirmed the policy shift Friday. Trump did not inform Atty. Gen. Jeff Sessions in advance of the change in policy, an almost unheard of undermining of a Cabinet official.

Anyway, I think it will be good TV. She will ask questions others are not asking. Giving her a whole week from first getting a copy of the book and listening to other takes and comments to the interview will give her plenty of time to sharpen those questions.

Nice explanation of Ryan with this simple paragraph:

So how did such an obvious con artist get a reputation for seriousness and fiscal probity? Basically, he was the beneficiary of ideological affirmative action.

Hahahahaha. So true and such a dig.

Fun to see @DLoesch defending guy who shot at black teenager who was asking directions. Guess her “I’m a mom” video doesn’t count for this kid.

I detest Dana but I don’t think that was the point she was making. She may, but very inarticulately, have actually been supporting the teenager.

I think you give her more credit than she deserves given how she blamed Castile for his own death and her organization is responsible for the mentality that caused this couple to pull a gun on this kid.

Her comments about Castile were unforgivable as are all her remarks concerning the Parkland massacre and, in general, anything she says publicly. But in this case I think she meant that the teenager was not likely to be a burglar because he knocked and that it’s wrong to shoot at someone who is running away. Her phrasing could have been vastly improved but that’s how I read it. Of course, sometimes I do interpret statements in the best light, even when uttered by deplorables.

I dunno. I’m just reluctant to give her a bod given who she is. I’d be happy to be wrong but my broader point is that her organization encourages this shoot first, ask questions later mentality.

I wonder what was really at the very root of Matt Bevin’s comments about the students having to stay home a Friday (weekday) while teachers are protesting?

People are upset at his comments, as they should be, but are they upset at what I would call the Kentucky cliches that Bevin seems to buy into that led to his conclusion?

And if he does think those cliches are Kentucky, then he has shown the people he governs he has zero respect for them.

I hope they run his ass out. He sure has shown he doesn’t care about Kentucky. He seems to think the people are a bad “joke.”

I agree with Hecuba’s daughter’s assessment.

But where you are right is Dana has been so gun heavy in thinking it is hard to see her in any other light.

Who knows, maybe those idiots at the NRA are starting to get a feel for some moderation and a bit of reality in their commenting. Mind you this would be hard to identify with all their other hard edge bullshit.

But they are going to have a real tough time ever getting back to any position that might be considered even slightly realistic and rational. They have painted themselves into such a tough-ass position they may never be able to overcome it if/when they get new leadership and need to show a different stance on guns and gun controls.

Shhh don’t tell Glenn that, it gets in the way of his narrative. Seriously what a pathetic troll he is. He has no real ideology. He just hates the Democrats. The fucked up thing is he was just as hawkish in the Bush years for quite sometime. And I’m sorry but our past and current foreign policy escapades don’t excuse Putin doing what he does at all. That’s not how reality works.

So our plan is to allow them to use chemical weapons, give them several days warning to move weapons to a safe place, and then bomb when it does minimal damage. And do nothing to help the refugees or Syrian people. Of course, Trump is only following Putin’s orders.

personally, I believe dana’s statement is completely incorrect about burglars.
Many burglars do indeed knock. Either no one is home and it’s safe to enter the house, or it’s an elderly person who opens the door and the burglars pretend to be people working in the the neighborhood and they need to distract the owner.

They (and meth cookers) also seek out rural places with lots of elderly people like this to do their work.

If said burglars aren’t prepared for a person in the house when the owner knocks, they can simply make up any excuse to the owner (where does Mr. Smith live, I’m looking for a telephone, &c) and try again later.
