good grief these people are stupid

An Ontario eatery has been targeted by supporters of Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who likely mistook the establishment for the Virginia restaurant the White House press secretary was asked to leave on Friday.

The negative comments on the Facebook page belonging to The Olde Red Hen in Collingwood, Ont., are likely due to the two restaurant’s similar names. Sanders tweeted on Saturday that the owner of the Red Hen in Lexington, Va. told her to leave because she works for U.S. President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile in Collingwood, Ont., the Olde Red Hen’s Facebook page has been inundated with angry comments and bad reviews.

From the previous thread:

re: #593 plansbandc

It really is particularly sick they are being built on military bases. Why is this OK with anyone?

re: #609 Cheechako

They’re using military bases because they have very tight access control. Keeps the reporters and the public away and the kids out of sight.

Yup.

The Posse Comitatus Act prohibits the Air Force and the Army from operating as a police force within the USA (unless a governor requests them or the government declares a state in rebellion).

In theory, they could use Navy bases for this. Using an Army and Air Force base also has the effect of weakening the Posse Comitatus Act … that would be necessary to impose martial law on areas and make it stick.

The officer corps of the Pentagon is at real risk of mutiny of the enlisted personnel of the Armed Forces if they go through with this. Moreover, if the Armed Forces divide over this issue, they then become useless for anything (as factions of the military would be opposing each other).

This is perfect from the view of Steve Bannon and folks like Karl Rove.

Tomorrow is NY primary day! The race here in the 2nd District of LI is between Presiding Officer in the Suffolk County Legislature DuWayne Gregory and businesswoman and activist Liuba Grechen Shirley. Tough choice. Both seem like they’d do a good job in the House.

I’m leaning towards Liuba, simply because I look at how the men in Congress have screwed shit up and I’m inclined to hand the keys to a woman for a change.

And (I know I sound like a broken record but) let’s not forget the Orangeburg Massacre.

The Orangeburg massacre refers to the shooting of protesters by South Carolina Highway Patrol officers in Orangeburg, South Carolina, on the South Carolina State University campus on the evening of February 8, 1968.

This was the first incident of its kind on a United States university campus. The Orangeburg killings received relatively little media coverage. The events predated the 1970 Kent State shootings and Jackson State killings, in which protesters against the Vietnam War were killed by the National Guard, and by the local and state highway patrol, respectively. The perceived overreaction by law enforcement helped galvanize public opinion against the war as well.

en.wikipedia.org

Bakari Sellers’ father—who was one of the protesters—was the only person to go to prison. (I’ve posted two pages on this over the years.)

Well, there are a few women who can screw things up as well (Michele Bachmann, Marsha Blackburn, &c). “Woman” is not my consideration, “most liberal available” is.

That said, there is a reason there are far more women in the Democratic Caucus.

As you probably already know, I actually grew up during a part of the CR Movement. Gergen wasn’t asleep, he simply didn’t care what was happening to those who look like me. It wasn’t happening to him, so he probably thought everything was fine, and America was the greatest nation on the planet, a nation in which everyone is treated the same [Privilege and denial combined is a helluva drug.] Gergen reminds me of some that attended Trump’s Michigan rally last week. When they were asked whether they were concerned about the migrant children that were being detained, they said they didn’t believe any kids were being detained. They were then informed about the pics that had been handed out to journalists by CBP, and their response was that the pics were fake and had been photo-shopped.

re: #100 danarchy

Whenever I see one of these videos I have to ask how they know these are children who were separated vs children who arrived unaccompanied? I doubt the ICE or HHS personnel with them are telling them anything.

Well, I can’t say from where I am. There is very little in the way of local media coverage of the whole issue.

starherald.com (Scottsbluf, Nebr. Star-Herald, just posted a minute ago).

It would appear that the Republicans want to change the law on the way children are treated who arrive without parents (and remember, the government said it would treat all children that way) so they can be deported quicker.

In an interesting article in my regional paper, the author of the 1935 book “Little House on the Prairie” has been stripped of a children’s award by the American Library Association.

starherald.com

The TL;DR version of the article is that the opening chapter of the book talks about the characters moving out west to settle, and the following line appears in the book:

“where the wild animals lived without being afraid.” Where “the land was level, and there were no trees.”

And where “there were no people. Only Indians lived there.”

A reader made a complaint to Harper’s about the line in 1952.

Yet Harper’s decision in 1953 to change “people” to “settlers” in the offending sentence did little to quell the critics in later decades, who began describing Wilder’s depictions of Native Americans and some African Americans— and her storylines evoking white settlers’ manifest-destiny beliefs — as racist.

Now, after years of complaints, the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, says it voted Saturday to strip [Laura Ingalls] Wilder’s name from the award.

Cops called on an African-American firefighter in Oakland, California. He was in uniform and driving a fire department truck conducting inspections. People filmed him and demanded identification from him.

huffingtonpost.com (caution for auto-play video)

Someone called the police last month on a black firefighter who was participating in a safety inspection in Oakland, California. Someone else filmed him and asked him to produce identification.

Kevin Moore was one of a number of firefighters carrying out legally mandated exterior inspections to determine if vegetation posed an extra risk to homes in the event of a wildfire, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Working in an upscale area of the Oakland hills, Moore was in uniform and carrying a clipboard and a radio, with his station’s fire truck parked nearby.

Prompted by a resident’s call, an emergency 911 dispatcher contacted Moore’s station on May 16 to determine if the inspections were going on. Someone also emailed home security footage to the Oakland Police Department showing Moore — clearly in uniform — knocking on a door. When Moore returned to do more inspections last week, a neighbor used his cellphone to videotape him, asked him what he was doing in the neighborhood and demanded to see his ID — which the resident then photographed.

Moore told the neighbor that if he was still concerned, he could check the street and see “a big red fire engine,” the Chronicle reported.

More from the same article. It really doesn’t sound accidental (and Harper’s did take twenty years to make a single-word change to her book):

Elsewhere in the book, Osage tribe members are sometimes depicted as animalistic, notes the critic Philip Heldrich: In one scene, Wilder describes them as wearing a “leather thong” with “the furry skin of a small animal” hanging down in front, making “harsh sounds” and having “bold and fierce” faces with “black eyes.” Although Laura’s father espouses a more tolerant view of Native Americans, his description of a “good Indian” is one who is “no common trash.”

The character who is Laura Ingalls’s mother, Caroline Ingalls, is not subtle in her hatred of the Native Americans, saying repeatedly she doesn’t like them, before she has even encountered them. As the critic Ann Romines wrote, “Indians become a code for everything that seems to threaten the settled, white life she wants for her daughters.”

In addition, in another scene, Wilder depicts white men wearing blackface for the entertainment of others — including her father.

The FDA has approved a cannabis-derived drug for the treatment of two rare forms of epilepsy.

fda.gov

The manufacturer of the drug notes there was initial confusion over whether the DEA would seek to prohibit it. However, the FDA has authority over the DEA and critically, FDA approval means the drug will be available in every state, not just those with medical marijuana laws.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Epidiolex (cannabidiol) [CBD] oral solution for the treatment of seizures associated with two rare and severe forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome, in patients two years of age and older. This is the first FDA-approved drug that contains a purified drug substance derived from marijuana. It is also the first FDA approval of a drug for the treatment of patients with Dravet syndrome.

CBD is a chemical component of the Cannabis sativa plant, more commonly known as marijuana. However, CBD does not cause intoxication or euphoria (the “high”) that comes from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Ideologically I have no problem with what Ms Waters said about “pushing back”.

It was just a tactical error, she should have known that those words were going to be twisted and taken out of context to imply that she is advocating violence.

As for Bryan, we cannot expect him to understand that refusing to serve a specific person for their actions, especially when they are a public figure is a totally different ball of wax than denying service based on race or sexual identity.

But they are already inventing talking points about “GOP drinking fountains”.

As long as they are separate but equal, right?

John Cole put this up at Balloon Juice, and I think this paragraph is important:

This is all going to get more extreme. And it should. We are living in extreme times. The harm that is being done to all of us by the people in the American government is extreme. To imagine that Mexican immigrants should happily cook for and serve meals to people who enable a man who is determined to demonize and persecute them as subhuman criminals is far more outrageous than the idea that those enablers should not be served in restaurants. I do not believe that Trump administration officials should be able to live their lives in peace and affluence while they inflict serious harms on large portions of the American population. Not being able to go to restaurants and attend parties and be celebrated is just the minimum baseline here. These people, who are pushing America merrily down the road to fascism and white nationalism, are delusional if they do not think that the backlash is going to get much worse. Wait until the recession comes. Wait until Trump starts a war. Wait until the racism this administration is stoking begins to explode into violence more frequently. Read a fucking history book. Read a recent history book. The U.S. had thousands of domestic bombings per year in the early 1970s. This is what happens when citizens decide en masse that their political system is corrupt, racist, and unresponsive. The people out of power have only just begun to flex their dissatisfaction. The day will come, sooner that you all think, when Trump administration officials will look back fondly on the time when all they had to worry about was getting hollered at at a Mexican restaurant. When you aggressively fuck with people’s lives, you should not be surprised when they decide to fuck with yours.

Titanic was number one for two reasons:

2. When Cameron was making it, a producer told him that he’d only get half the population to show up, to which Cameron replied something to the affect of “I would love that.” Imagine if 150M people showed up to any movie. And a lot of them brought their significant others.

This is beyond supporting policies that are anti-LBGT. This is Sanders lying to the American people every single goddamned day. This is about DHS locking up children, kidnapping them from their parents, and for Bondi, about taking a bribe from her pal Trump to not prosecute him.

The only policy is DHS. The rest is simple corruption.

I’m a Titanic hater, though I’ve loved previous Titanic movies, especially A Night to Remember. The parts of Titanic based on the real story were fine; the romance was ridiculous, especially the role of Rose’s fiance.

A Night to Remember gave me nightmares for weeks when I was a kid. I think that is the main reason that going on a cruise has never been on my list of things to do. (I am doing a river cruise next year, but I can very likely manage to swim to the shore from any river…worst case, I can float like a buoy if need be.)

re: #173 Belafon

Titanic was number one for two reasons:
1. Earnings for movies are not adjusted for inflation, or Gone With the Wind would always be number one, and we definitely don’t want that.
2. When Cameron was making it, a producer told him that he’d only get half the population to show up, to which Cameron replied something to the affect of “I would love that.” Imagine if 150M people showed up to any movie. And a lot of them brought their significant others.

Titanic was the best movie ever made based on a romance novel (that never existed).

BTW, I’m not agreeing with your assessment at all. Just a statement.

Titanic took a formulaic rich girl/poor boy romance and spliced it into a disaster movie based on a real-life event. Add a sprinkle of classism, stoicism and heroism and you’ve got the makings of a decent movie. Cameron is a good director and the acting was above par. Even though we know the outcome of the accident, the framing story [old Rose telling about young Rose] added suspense and gave the movie a connection to the present. IOW it has all the basic elements of a solid, entertaining movie.

It’s very popular in China, although many versions have Rose’s nude posing and the steamy sex scene in the Renault(?) deleted by the censors.

I suspect many Chinese women can identify with Rose, who is trapped in an arranged marriage (for money) and a very constrained societal role, but who manages to find love and adventure in the end. Of course, she has to fake her death to make it possible. Not sure about the message of that aspect of the story.

Titanic is more remarkable for the way Cameron made the setting seem so “real” than the plot itself. Much like he did with Avatar, aka “Dances with Smurfs,” he managed to make a blockbuster film through cinematic marvels than actual storytelling. Cut away the CGI and practical effects and Titanic would have had all the depth of a Made-For-TV movie.

According to the media, when you’re a evangelical who screams that he cannot condone doing business with gays because “my beliefs don’t allow me to condone sin,” even when you cannot back up your “beliefs” with anything other than a personal opinion that gays are “wrong,” then society must have deep and thoughtful discussions on whether or not it’s wrong to force you to do business with gays because your rights are at risk.

But if you’re a liberal who says he cannot do business with a member of an unpopular conservative administration because he cannot condone things he views as evil and wrong, then you’re being “uncivil” and are threatening the very fabric of our society by not being accepting of “different points of view.” That to pick and choose who you’ll do business with is wrong and you’ve no right to turn those people away.

It has been a very not-normal spring and now early summer for weather in the US. Storm chasers have a sad because the tornado chasing in the southern plains have been a bust so far. The Atlantic is very quiet as far as tropical storms, due to the ocean surface between Africa and South America being cooler than normal.

But there have been some spectacular low pressure systems in the US that almost look like extratropical storms one sees in the oceans, with features like rain bands. Last week over Montana, this morning over Iowa:

A black firefighter conducting city-mandated inspections around homes in the Oakland hills was reported to police and, on a separate occasion, questioned and videotaped by a resident who found him suspicious, even though he was in full uniform with his fire truck parked nearby.

Vince Crudele, who supervises the inspection program, said firefighters “absolutely” have the right, listed plainly in the California Fire Code, to conduct exterior property inspections while residents aren’t home. The department sends out pamphlets before the program begins, hosts community meetings and gets the word out through neighborhood groups, Crudele said.

Moore said he suggested that if the resident were still concerned, he could simply look out onto the street where “a big red fire engine is right there.”

Good teachers can use uncomplimentary portrayals of characters in stories as teaching moments. Huckleberry Finn still catches flak for the Jim character, though Twain in fact was trying to show how two people of different races could still become friends. And the n* word was part of the language back then.

OTOH using the Ingalls books in a classroom in which there were Native American or First Nation students could be problematic.

I think this goes too far. Some of the language in Little House wouldn’t be okay nowadays, but the book clearly isn’t an apology for racism. It’s insensitive by modern standards. Kids aren’t going to read it and come away with the idea that Indians are subhuman, because that’s not the main point of the book. In fact, it can easily be a teaching point about it, to make people think about how attitudes differed historically.

There are lots of books from earlier times that use words and tropes that wouldn’t be okay today. While one can argue that celebrating these works is part of the culture that enshrines white privilege, it doesn’t mean that we should wipe away and sanitise as much of it as possible. I don’t think a book like Little House on the Prairie is emblematic of racist attitudes.

We may well and truly be irreparably fucked. That may just be my nagging pessimism again, but I’m not sure how we’re going to last at this rate. The backslide is coming so fast and with a court system almost expressly made to ensure that the GOP’s eternal conservatopia is unassailable and unbreakable.

I think the Red Hen story is a great example of the media all jumping onto a narrative and running it into the ground.

They sure as hell do not spend any time trying to figure out how it fits in the scheme of the current political climate and how it compares to other recent events.

They see a story and they all pile on. And most of the people you see on TV are just reading the script. There is no depth to the report. They should just use a artificial computer generated voice.

Justice Kennedy’s concurrence says, essentially, that there are some things that are unconstitutional that the Judiciary is not in a place to correct or address. It’s subtext is pretty close to the surface, and seems designed to chastise the Executive while agreeing with the majority that there was not anything the Court could do about it.

Again, the Constitution needs to be updated. When it was written, the founders could not have foreseen a time when modern travel and technology would raise these issues.

re: #290 Citizen K

Indefinite internments, here we come….

I just went and looked up the case. The original SCOTUS ruling was in favor of internment. The ruling still stands, though:

The decision in Korematsu v. United States has been controversial.[2] Korematsu’s conviction for evading internment was overturned on November 10, 1983, after Korematsu challenged the earlier decision by filing for a writ of coram nobis. In a ruling by Judge Marilyn Hall Patel, the United States District Court for the Northern District of California granted the writ (thus voiding Korematsu’s original conviction) because in Korematsu’s original case, the government had knowingly submitted false information to the Supreme Court that had a material effect on the Supreme Court’s decision.[5]

The Korematsu decision has not been explicitly overturned,[6] but in 2011, the Department of Justice filed an official notice[7] conceding that the Solicitor General’s defense of the internment policy at the time had been in error. However, the Court’s opinion remains significant: it was the first instance of the Supreme Court applying the strict scrutiny standard to racial discrimination by the government. Also, it was one of only a handful of cases in which the Court held that the government had met that standard.

Another one of those “Obama did it, therefore it must be bad.”

Huck Finn would not be telling the AA students anything they don’t already know. Some schools use expurgated versions which remove the n* word. Most objections to the book center around that word, not necessarily about the portrayal of Jim and Huck’s conflicted friendship with him. That said, a white teacher would have to be very careful in approaching the book, perhaps more so than an AA teacher.

Fact is, there’s always someone who can find something objectionable in nearly every book used in schools.

As near as I can tell from reading people who seem to know this stuff, there can still be interventions by the courts on specific actions taken during the “Trump ban”.

If I an understanding correctly, today’s ruling is just that an Executive can do bans for national security reasons. Yet it does not rule on the details of any such executive actions.

So, if someone is wronged by such a ban, they can still bring a case against the Government in court.

You know what, I’m going ot say this but fuck Reagan. Reagan’s a big part of why the GOP is such an ugly shit show these days.

There is nothing to choose between tRump and Reagan. Reagan was more polished at creating an acceptably decorous public image but the main difference is that the body politic was more resilient in those days. It hadn’t been subjected to 37 years of Reaganomics and the Reagan GOP. Morally and ethically, Reagan was tRump. No difference in hell.

At the same time, it’s given this administration more time on the clock. Finding people who can prove with evidence that they were wronged, gathering the evidence, filing the paperwork to bring suit, and so forth is all time that this administration now has to further its goal of shutting off entry to this nation of all “undesirables.” And even if the case should succeed, the most it will do is return things to a state of status quo antebellum, with the understanding that the White House remains open to take actions if it argues they are in a “national security interest.”

re: #322 wheat-dogg

Huck Finn would not be telling the AA students anything they don’t already know. Some schools use expurgated versions which remove the n* word. Most objections to the book center around that word, not necessarily about the portrayal of Jim and Huck’s conflicted friendship with him. That said, a white teacher would have to be very careful in approaching the book, perhaps more so than an AA teacher.

Fact is, there’s always someone who can find something objectionable in nearly every book used in schools.

Speaking of which, has anybody else seen the remake of Fahrenheit 451? I was wondering what your reactions were.

Neither would the Little House books be telling NA students anything they don’t see elsewhere. Sadly.

Trump’s ban does nothing for national security, since the nations targeted are ones that have mostly not fostered terrorism. Those that have are not on the list. It’s all for show, so he can tell his idiot base that he’s securing the borders, etc., etc.

Regardless of the legal meaning of the ruling, it’s going to embolden the idiot base to continue attacks on Muslims in the USA just trying to go about their everyday business.

It would be most honest if those who try to argue that what’s happening is “different” just acknowledged that they (in reality) are just wanting it to be different because they don’t want to be part to the reenactment of horrors that today are relegated to dry and dusty tomes of history. They don’t want to be on the front lines of a fight against fascism and tyranny, they want to believe that things are just going through a “rough patch” and we’ll emerge from the other side once Trump is gone. Just as many in nations that became dictatorships told themselves that the guy in power couldn’t “live forever” and eventually his reign would end along with the horrors spawned from it.

I don’t claim to know all of the history in the US in every detail, but I personally compare the current administration to the Woodrow Wilson one. He was racist, and he even used an EO to kick all of the minorities out of the government. And it sucks that he’s in charge and so many are enabling him.

The difference, though, is how the majority of the country is reacting. Back then, the country responded by kicking all of the blacks out of baseball and ramping up Jim Crow. Now, people are protesting, and kicking Trump admin people out of restaurants. Do you think any restaurant would have kicked Wilson’s press secretary out?

My hope is not based on the fact that we got through the Wilson’s era, because that took way too long. My hope is based on the people I hear and see pushing back.

The German aristocracy and their intellectual allies told themselves that Hitler wasn’t a concern, that as soon as he became a threat to their nation he could be removed, as he’d been appointed to an office that was largely ceremonial while the real power lay in the Reichstag and the presidency.

Then the Reichstag burned, Hitler blamed the communists, a rigged election gave the Nazis a majority government, and the Chancellery went from being a ceremonial office to the real position of power in the German government backed by a legislature that allowed it to rule by fiat.

The only silver lining to this decision is that the policy can be overturned by the stroke of a pen from the next president.

Also, fuck Kennedy’s cowardly “Don’t get made at me—I don’t like this policy, I just can’t do anything about it.

Same for Roberts’ bullshit “We are not expressing anything regarding the soundness of this policy”. The majority in this decision should get heckled back to the Stone Age whenever they step foot in public.

I understand and agree with the need to fight, but I can’t fault those for whom the fight seems futile at this point. They were told for the better part of a year that the fight would be “won” in the courts, that that string of victories in the early court battles would continue all the way to the steps of the Supreme Court and Trump’s efforts stymied or even halted entirely. Now we get to the SCOTUS and realize that the Court is willing to give Trump a pass if it can argue that doing so is the only option the Court has.

At that point, what is there left to do? We as citizens can argue that its to vote and seek a government better able to fight Trump and his influence, but what of those who aren’t citizens? How do they continue the fight when the best ally they might have had just shut the door in their face?

Especially when it’s clear that those of us who believed we or their loved ones were truly citizens and would remain citizens right up until the nativist warpath got the closest it’s been to literally de-naturalizing citizens and/or striking birthright citizenship that it’s ever gotten.

It makes elections seem utterly futile when the courts that should be a bulwark against this kind of shit have instead become the ultimate impenetrable bulwark protecting it. Barring some kind of FDR-esque court packing and expansion scheme, I’m really not sure how we pull out of this.

This is a very dark day in our history.

And it’s the direct result of people thinking (in no particular order)
1) Clinton was worse than Trump,
2) that there were no difference between the parties,
3) my vote doesn’t matter, so I’ll vote for Bernie or Jill as a “protest” vote, or
4) voter suppression isn’t a thing but voter fraud is.

So many individual bits led us here. But given where we are now, we better fight to make sure that everyone votes as if their lives depend on it - because it’s clear more than ever that they do.

The GOP intend to roll back what’s left of Obamacare, including eliminating preexisting condition protections, that will hike costs to nearly 25% of all Americans, since pretty much everyone knows someone who has one (from obesity to high blood pressure to diabetes to cancer to pregnancy).

The GOP also intends to further rollback all kinds of protections - environmental, consumer, and voting/civil rights. We’ve seen it every step of the way with Trump, and it’s only going to get worse unless the GOP are stopped here and now.

You can’t count on the Courts to do this - because McConnell’s long con is in focus: he’s packed the courts with like minded extremists intent on destroying 70 years of social progress so angry white guys can feel better about themselves, and for the rich to get richer as social programs and the social contract are gutted as burdens are shifted on to those who are least able to endure them.

For those who complain that churches aren’t trying, may I point to a statement by my previous priest:

Proclaiming the Gospel and following Jesus in America, 2018: On Muslim bans, indefinite detention, and the separation of families
by djgrieser
As the days and months go by, I barely recognize the nation in which I was born and where I’ve lived for 58 of my 60 years. Perhaps it would be better to say that the shiny polish of civility, justice, and inclusion that dominated my understanding has been removed so that the ugly image underneath is on full display.

With the Supreme Court decision on the constitutionality of the “muslim ban,” the continued assault on the rule of law, the inhumane and unjust treatment of refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers, it would seem that there is no check on the forces of racism, white supremacy, and authoritarianism. Even worse, as we have seen in recent weeks, Administration officials appeal to Christian scripture to support the legality and morality of their actions.

As a preacher of the Gospel, it remains my solemn duty to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, to call for justice and peace, to remind myself and my fellow Christians of our duty to love God and neighbor, to welcome the stranger and the alien, to respect the dignity of every human being.

Over the last week, I and other members of the Unity and Relations Commission of the Wisconsin Council of Churches worked on a statement entitled “On the misuse of scripture to justify injustice.” It was approved by the Board of Directors and published yesterday. The full document is available here: On the Misuse of Scripture to Justify Injustice - Wisconsin Council of Churches - final.

I would also call attention to a personal statement I wrote on February 1, 2017, as the “muslim ban” was originally announced. It’s available :here.

In addition, the Wardens and Vestry of Grace Episcopal Church published this statement in 2017 Renewing Our Covenant

My own parish has also renewed our vows of covenant. It is not much but short of warfare, it is what churches do.

And I think Bernie and Jill, and their followers have overestimated it as full-throated support, when it was more like, ‘there’s not enough difference between Democrats and Republicans, so let’s push the Democrats to the left’. They ended up allowing the Republicans to push themselves so far to the right, I hope they’re all shocked to their senses.

Hard to believe that three years ago this date…

When several historic events happen on the exact same day, it’s a sign: June 26 should be a national holiday.

On Friday the Supreme Court ruled that gay Americans had the right to marry in every state in the country. On the exact same date two years ago, the same court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, allowing same-sex couples to access federal benefits. And when the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex sexual activity should be legal in every state in the Lawrence vs Texas ruling in 2003, it did so on … June 26.

re: #410 Targetpractice

One of the most effective antidotes to depression is taking some action that makes you feel a sense of control. By volunteering to do door-knocking to Democratic voters this summer it has given me a greater sense of control and of solidarity. Call your county Democratic Party office and volunteer something. Physical action matters and it has anti-depressive effects. As a result of our canvassing, we fully expect to turn this county blue this Fall. They need your fingers, your feet, your hands. And it matters.
