The negative comments on the Facebook page belonging to The Olde Red Hen in Collingwood, Ont., are likely due to the two restaurant’s similar names. Sanders tweeted on Saturday that the owner of the Red Hen in Lexington, Va. told her to leave because she works for U.S. President Donald Trump.

They’re using military bases because they have very tight access control. Keeps the reporters and the public away and the kids out of sight.
Yup.
The Posse Comitatus Act prohibits the Air Force and the Army from operating as a police force within the USA (unless a governor requests them or the government declares a state in rebellion).
In theory, they could use Navy bases for this. Using an Army and Air Force base also has the effect of weakening the Posse Comitatus Act … that would be necessary to impose martial law on areas and make it stick.
The officer corps of the Pentagon is at real risk of mutiny of the enlisted personnel of the Armed Forces if they go through with this. Moreover, if the Armed Forces divide over this issue, they then become useless for anything (as factions of the military would be opposing each other).
This is perfect from the view of Steve Bannon and folks like Karl Rove.

The Orangeburg massacre refers to the shooting of protesters by South Carolina Highway Patrol officers in Orangeburg, South Carolina, on the South Carolina State University campus on the evening of February 8, 1968.
This was the first incident of its kind on a United States university campus. The Orangeburg killings received relatively little media coverage. The events predated the 1970 Kent State shootings and Jackson State killings, in which protesters against the Vietnam War were killed by the National Guard, and by the local and state highway patrol, respectively. The perceived overreaction by law enforcement helped galvanize public opinion against the war as well.
Bakari Sellers’ father—who was one of the protesters—was the only person to go to prison. (I’ve posted two pages on this over the years.)

As you probably already know, I actually grew up during a part of the CR Movement. Gergen wasn’t asleep, he simply didn’t care what was happening to those who look like me. It wasn’t happening to him, so he probably thought everything was fine, and America was the greatest nation on the planet, a nation in which everyone is treated the same [Privilege and denial combined is a helluva drug.] Gergen reminds me of some that attended Trump’s Michigan rally last week. In an interesting article in my regional paper, the author of the 1935 book “Little House on the Prairie” has been stripped of a children’s award by the American Library Association.
The TL;DR version of the article is that the opening chapter of the book talks about the characters moving out west to settle, and the following line appears in the book:
“where the wild animals lived without being afraid.” Where “the land was level, and there were no trees.”
And where “there were no people. Only Indians lived there.”
A reader made a complaint to Harper’s about the line in 1952.
Yet Harper’s decision in 1953 to change “people” to “settlers” in the offending sentence did little to quell the critics in later decades, who began describing Wilder’s depictions of Native Americans and some African Americans— and her storylines evoking white settlers’ manifest-destiny beliefs — as racist.
Now, after years of complaints, the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, says it voted Saturday to strip [Laura Ingalls] Wilder’s name from the award.

Kevin Moore was one of a number of firefighters carrying out legally mandated exterior inspections to determine if vegetation posed an extra risk to homes in the event of a wildfire, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Working in an upscale area of the Oakland hills, Moore was in uniform and carrying a clipboard and a radio, with his station’s fire truck parked nearby.
Prompted by a resident’s call, an emergency 911 dispatcher contacted Moore’s station on May 16 to determine if the inspections were going on. Someone also emailed home security footage to the Oakland Police Department showing Moore — clearly in uniform — knocking on a door. When Moore returned to do more inspections last week, a neighbor used his cellphone to videotape him, asked him what he was doing in the neighborhood and demanded to see his ID — which the resident then photographed.
Moore told the neighbor that if he was still concerned, he could check the street and see “a big red fire engine,” the Chronicle reported.

Ideologically I have no problem with what Ms Waters said about “pushing back”.
It was just a tactical error, she should have known that those words were going to be twisted and taken out of context to imply that she is advocating violence.

Yeah I did think Billy Zane was cartoonishly villainous. One of my problems with the movie. I think technically speaking, it’s a well done movie. And I really like Leo and Kate but my favorite movie they’ve done together was Revolutionary Road which I think was underrated. The novel is one of my favorites.

A Night to Remember gave me nightmares for weeks when I was a kid. I think that is the main reason that going on a cruise has never been on my list of things to do. Add a sprinkle of classism, stoicism and heroism and you’ve got the makings of a decent movie. Cameron is a good director and the acting was above par. Even though we know the outcome of the accident, the framing story [old Rose telling about young Rose] added suspense and gave the movie a connection to the present. IOW it has all the basic elements of a solid, entertaining movie.
It’s very popular in China, although many versions have Rose’s nude posing and the steamy sex scene in the Renault(?) deleted by the censors.

It has been a very not-normal spring and now early summer for weather in the US. Storm chasers have a sad because the tornado chasing in the southern plains have been a bust so far. The Atlantic is very quiet as far as tropical storms, due to the ocean surface between Africa and South America being cooler than normal.
But there have been some spectacular low pressure systems in the US that almost look like extratropical storms one sees in the oceans, with features like rain bands. Last week over Montana, this morning over Iowa:

I think this goes too far. Some of the language in Little House wouldn’t be okay nowadays, but the book clearly isn’t an apology for racism. It’s insensitive by modern standards. Kids aren’t going to read it and come away with the idea that Indians are subhuman, because that’s not the main point of the book. In fact, it can easily be a teaching point about it, to make people think about how attitudes differed historically.
There are lots of books from earlier times that use words and tropes that wouldn’t be okay today. While one can argue that celebrating these works is part of the culture that enshrines white privilege, it doesn’t mean that we should wipe away and sanitise as much of it as possible. I don’t think a book like Little House on the Prairie is emblematic of racist attitudes.

Good teachers can use uncomplimentary portrayals of characters in stories as teaching moments. Huckleberry Finn still catches flak for the Jim character, though Twain in fact was trying to show how two people of different races could still become friends. And the n* word was part of the language back then.

I just went and looked up the case. The original SCOTUS ruling was in favor of internment. The ruling still stands, though:
The decision in Korematsu v. As I noted above, four are totally on Trump’s side. The fifth is a swing vote who has been convinced in this and several recent cases to vote on the “The situation is hopeless!” side. If I an understanding correctly, today’s ruling is just that an Executive can do bans for national security reasons. Yet it does not rule on the details of any such executive actions.
So, if someone is wronged by such a ban, they can still bring a case against the Government in court.

Primary turnout in Maryland might not mean much, as incumbent GOP Governor Hogan is unopposed, so I would not expect as many R’s going to the polls, although there are downballot races of course.
So it looks like Alison Ettel’s (Permit Patty) products are being removed from stores. Companies are even taking the money they’ve earned from those products and donating it to Black Girl’s Code and the 8 year old.
Also, according to the diary, there’s a three week wait list for the Red Hen. Not sure what it was like before, but business isn’t hurting.

So many individual bits led us here. But given where we are now, we better fight to make sure that everyone votes as if their lives depend on it - because it’s clear more than ever that they do.
The GOP intend to roll back what’s left of Obamacare, including eliminating preexisting condition protections, that will hike costs to nearly 25% of all Americans, since pretty much everyone knows someone who has one (from obesity to high blood pressure to diabetes to cancer to pregnancy).
The GOP also intends to further rollback all kinds of protections - environmental, consumer, and voting/civil rights. We’ve seen it every step of the way with Trump, and it’s only going to get worse unless the GOP are stopped here and now.
You can’t count on the Courts to do this - because McConnell’s long con is in focus: he’s packed the courts with like minded extremists intent on destroying 70 years of social progress so angry white guys can feel better about themselves, and for the rich to get richer as social programs and the social contract are gutted as burdens are shifted on to those who are least able to endure them.

I understand and agree with the need to fight, but I can’t fault those for whom the fight seems futile at this point. They were told for the better part of a year that the fight would be “won” in the courts, that that string of victories in the early court battles would continue all the way to the steps of the Supreme Court and Trump’s efforts stymied or even halted entirely. Now we get to the SCOTUS and realize that the Court is willing to give Trump a pass if it can argue that doing so is the only option the Court has.
At that point, what is there left to do? We as citizens can argue that its to vote and seek a government better able to fight Trump and his influence, but what of those who aren’t citizens? How do they continue the fight when the best ally they might have had just shut the door in their face?
One of the most effective antidotes to depression is taking some action that makes you feel a sense of control. By volunteering to do door-knocking to Democratic voters this summer it has given me a greater sense of control and of solidarity. Call your county Democratic Party office and volunteer something. Physical action matters and it has anti-depressive effects. As a result of our canvassing, we fully expect to turn this county blue this Fall. They need your fingers, your feet, your hands. And it matters.
