The video is a stream of last month’s University of Puerto Rico (UPR) governing committee meeting. In 1:56:00, the president of the UPR, Dr Jorge Haddock, talked about the IT systems. He made the disdainful remark that he had instructed the IT subdirector to look into canned software because the UPR has been using custom made software, and by the time these are completed, the software is obsolete.

Now, this disdain gets on my nerves. At the UPR level, the major software development has been Portal UPR, a project to modernize the systems. The project has had its problems, but it was on route to accomplish its goals. The biggest problem it had was personnel: it had too few people for the amount of work. Still, those working on it gave their best. And it’s not like Portal UPR is not in use. It’s currently running several key university processes, helping move away from the old systems.

But this transition had hit a recent wall. All the easy pickings were done, now the most difficult and time consuming tasks remained. And that’s where this story takes a macabre turn in July. Starting on July, the team working on the project was either returned to their original posts (those that were previously working in a UPR campus), or left on the curb without contract, with no warning and absolutely no explanation. All that was heard were calls for patience because the new president (Haddock) was very “pro-IT” and was coming with new ideas. Dr Haddock started as president on the first week of September, and the project manager, the only person still working on the project, was still ignored. After around 4 months of having his calls and emails ignored at best, or replied with empty platitudes at worse, the PM decided to quit.

A sub-team was cobbled together at the last minute to keep the project running, while Dr Haddock’s team was supposed to convince the PM back, one of the conditions the full team gave to return to the project.

The thread also points to other problems within the institution. Aside from the Portal UPR PM, I know of around 10 IT people we’ve lost, all of them high caliber talents, but only a handful to retirements. It’s not just the project that’s losing staff. the campuses regular IT offices are also losing people. Compounding the problem is that the UPR has had problems recruiting people in the past. In the current climate, it’s impossible nowadays.

Any other of my thoughts in this subject veer into tin foil territory.

Also saw a retweet by someone at the same time that Trump appeared to have some unusual difficulty navigating the stairs to the stage at the ceremony. he had a “death grip” on Melania’s had for assistance.

I didn’t give it much weight at the time. No corroborating info anywhere else (much like that ‘phone call’ tweet). And, still none.
All anyone really seems to know is that it was seriously cold in DC this evening. Local weather was issuing hypothermia warnings. And Trump left the ceremony rapidly after the tree was lit, and that press pool (that should travel with him) was left behind.

As for caucuses, I really don’t know about them being less democratic. People who cannot attend a county caucus meeting can fill out a form to either mail or deliver to the county party. The state party mails everyone an absentee ballot for the caucus.

It would probably be better if the state party simply held a regular primary, as the Republican and Libertarian Parties do. (I would also like to get rid of the state law that says independents can vote in any primary/caucus. You ain’t a member, you don’t get to pick our candidates.)

I cooked chicken breast in the sous vide tonight. Last night I put some thyme and Pepper Plant seasoning on it and bagged them up with some Romano Cesar to marinate overnight because I’m really just grabbing random stuff that’s lying around and seeing how it works now. Three hours at 150 degrees because why the hell not, sliced it up and served with some Trader Joe’s stove top pasta Alfredo because, again, available.

The results were so fucking tender and juicy I cried a little.

I recall that in the novel of The Handmaid’s Tale, there’s a metafictional epilogue, a panel of historians discussing how Offred’s tapes (which form the narrative of the book) were recorded at the beginning of the Republic of Gilead and that ultimately, Gilead collapsed and a more equal society re-emerged with a restoration of full rights for women and freedom of religion. I don’t recall now if the historians stated how long Gilead lasted before it fell apart; it’s been a long, long time since I read the novel.

Looking at my copy of the book …

The epilogue is set on June 25, 2195. Referring to a section of the dialogue, from Professor James Darcy Pieixoto of the University of Cambridge, given at the University of Denay, Nunavut. (The speech is about the difficulty in authenticating artifacts from Gilead as being genuine.)

“To return from my digression: [cassette] tape like this, howeiver, is difficult to fake convincingly, and we were assured by the experts who examined them that the physical objects themselves are genuine. Certainly the recording itself, that is, the superimposition of voice upon music tape, could not have been done within the past hundred and fifty years.”

The story never gives a precise date for the Republic of Gilead, but using the figure given in the fictional speech, the cassette tapes would have been dated no later than 2045.

Exactly; Henry Lee Lucas sprang to mind immediately when I first read about the case a few days back on Reddit - I didn’t dismiss it outright, but I took it (and still do) with something of a grain of salt.

But as the authorities have apparently verified 34 homicides, and it appears that he was most active during the 1970’s and 80’s (the “Golden Age of Serial Killers”, so to speak), it’s starting to look like there’s definitely something to it.

Whelp, I just got a spam/potential malware attachment in E-mail, allegedly from the state Public Information Officer.

Being the village Public Information Officer, and unsure what to do, I sent an E-mail back to the real state PIO noting I got this.

Since the E-mail alleges to be from a state office (though the E-mail address was constructed badly) and it used her name as she writes it (not her name as it appears in my Outlook address book), I noted I was suspicious that the state’s computer system may have been hacked. In that case, it is possible every PIO in the state received this E-mail alleging to be from her.

I alerted her to this, and asked if there was someone at the state IT office I should send a copy of the E-mail to. (I do not have a contact for such information from the state.)

At least Cohen isn’t trying to fuck up the government’s case. I dunno. Drawing blanks. By far the Democratic administration that had the most problems with investigations and convictions was the Truman one. I think Truman was a very good President but that was a problem for him and I think one of his weaknesses also was with his judiciary picks. FDR and even Ike did better than him at that. Ike’s SCOTUS picks get a an A- from me for Warren and Brennan alone and Stewart was solid as well and Harland while more conservative than I’d like was a reasonable conservative jurist.

When you consider that Mueller was a product of privilege, it makes it all the more admirable. As I’ve said, I probably do have some ideological differences with Mueller, the man is a registered Republican after all but he’s always been about service to country first. It will piss off the Republicans greatly but I hope one of the first Congressional Medal of Freedoms if he hasn’t received it already goes to Mueller in the next Dem administration. This guy has served honorably in our armed forces, prosecuted gangsters and terrorists, and he may yet get the biggest crook we’ve ever made President. We owe him a great debt and thanks. He’s also from what I understand a really dedicated husband and father and a consummate professional, I’d be honored to work for such a man.

Two employees, who were not publicly identified but whose ages were given as 50 and 46, and other “unidentified people in positions of authority” are suspected of failing to report possible money laundering for transactions worth 311 million euros, or more than $350 million.

The money flowed to organizations in the British Virgin Islands before spring 2016, prosecutors said in an emailed statement.

The German bank confirmed in a statement that the police were investigating several of its offices in Germany and said the investigation related to the Panama Papers, a trove of files that put a spotlight on global money laundering. “We are cooperating fully with the authorities,” Deutsche said in the statement.

I can’t help but think that at this very moment, there is someone in Trump’s inner circle of advisers and family that knows that the best way out of this is the Nixon strategy: resign and hope the VP pardons him.

If that’s the strategy, they probably want to hold out until February 2019, so that Pence can serve two additional terms. I think we really need someone younger. I know it sounds ageist but we really do need to contrast that that Trump in fact is the low energy one. We tried the experienced one to go against Trump the first time. I’d go with someone a little more raw yet qualified. I do want to see who is advising these candidates though.

You know, I know you lean libertarian and I’ve gotten a couple libertarian buds to admit they’re sympathetic to that and they definitely agreed they’d rather the government spend more on social programs than the military. My belief is this. I believe the government since it is we the people should be investing in we the people and that means things like education, infrastructure, health care, and yes making sure people don’t go hungry. Massie is a Paul style wackjob that has his head up Von Mises’ Institute’s ass and doesn’t realize that economics is about living and breathing people.

Even then I think that misses some things. So much of jobs is knowing the right people and the right people knowing the right people. A Randian system assumes we’re all starting from the same place and we’re never going to no matter how far technology advances.

Many years ago - when I was a teenager - I switched from glasses to contact lenses and I admit that for the first few hours in contacts, I wasn’t too good on stairs, owing to the prismatic distortion that occurs when you’re used to wearing eyeglasses. I have a strong prescription (-9.75 L eye, -8.15 R eye, and with astigmatism).

Even now, though I mostly wear glasses, when I pop in contacts, it slightly changes my depth perception.

The problem is that social program spending has become about “spending money on those other people who can’t possibly be me or my family.” I’ve benefited from social programs as have most voters but I know I have and I suppose most of you have too. But we don’t think about that because we’ve had dipshits like Reagan poison our minds against the “welfare queen” rather than us thinking about there are poor mothers out there who yes we want to be working who might need an extra hand so their kid doesn’t go hungry or we don’t consider that those student loans that helped us get our degree were a government program too. We need to win that conversation with the next generations of voters if we want to have more spending on social programs.

Many years ago - when I was a teenager - I switched from glasses to contact lenses and I admit that for the first few hours in contacts, I wasn’t too good on stairs, owing to the prismatic distortion that occurs when you’re used to wearing eyeglasses. I have a strong prescription (-9.75 L eye, -8.15 R eye, and with astigmatism).

Even now, though I mostly wear glasses, when I pop in contacts, it slightly changes my depth perception.

I don’t think tRump’s stair problem is due to vision. My sense of balance is nonexistent, really—my vestibular apparatus has never worked worth shit. Like a lot of people, I depend on visual cues and feedback from my ankle muscles. As I’ve gotten older and fatter (like tRump), the latter has become unreliable. I have a hell of a time going down stairs. Up is much easier.
