Asking for the impossible does not mean that you have an obligation to deliver on something that should have been reasonably started long, LONG ago. Do the best you can in the time allotted. If you can’t get any more signatures today, you can’t.

I know. I was given the petition in late February and I have tried every weekend to get out but the weather and other things were against me. I might try tomorrow but that may be cancelled due to wet weather.

My wife has talked for years about getting a ‘sunny day’ car, and we went looking online last night and found a 1977 MGB locally.

We went and took a look at it today, and I was pretty impressed. It was in very good shape - body was straight and solid, doors hung straight and true, new top, new master cylinder among other parts, new tires, 82K miles. It pushed a little oil when first started up, but that cleared up in a minute and the engine runs smoothly. Floorboards and wheelwells were in terrific shape. It got a new paint job years ago, but the paint was in very good shape. Garage kept for just about all of its life, the dealer is the third owner. And at the price point, I’m all in because my wife works ridiculously hard and I want her to have a fun little car as a reward for being so good at what she does.

The dealer has a lift, so we’re going to go back with a mechanic to look it over next weekend. My question to you guys - is there anything in particular we should look for, potential trouble spots, mechanical issues etc? We’ve never owned one of these, and we want to go in as informed as we can possibly be. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

NOT an expert, but my brother and I wanted one so badly, back when we were under 20! We used to go sit in an antique one (gosh, would be 75 years old?) in nice weather. We were lucky the car lot didn’t chase us out!

Not very fast but extremely fun to drive.

Roommate of mine had one back in the 80’s. We would blow around Houston with the top down. Very fun little car. Only problem he had with it was the choke spring would unhook from its linkage every once in a while, but was easy enough to reach in and relink it.

Assuming Trump isn’t brought down early by his treason or corruption, the problem we face in 2020 is that the GOP (and modern Conservative Parties in general) excel at getting a devoted following by promoting fear and hate of the “other”. In order to achieve victory, we need to develop the same level of fear directed at climate change and environmental apocalypse. Before Pearl Harbor, most Americans either outright supported the Germans or felt we could stay on the sidelines. We couldn’t motivate sufficient support for the Allies in WWII until we suffered a direct attack. We need to do something now to generate a similar level of unity and purpose.

If that’s a pic of the actual vehicle, it looks to be in pretty good shape: if the body is in good shape, and the engine runs OK, you’re over the two biggest problems. But with old British cars, problems (usually corrosion) can also arise in the auxiliary systems - brakes (lines, linings, discs/drums); fuel (lines, tank, pump), tranny (gearbox, clutch). And of course, the electrics. A checkout by a knowledgeable mechanic will spots issues with all but the last: problems with the electrical bits can’t be spotted except in operation. But if the car has spent 42 years being well-looked-after (and away from salt/salt air), it should be a good deal. And fun. Good luck.

ADD: OK, if the dealer’s page is accurate, they’ve checked out most of the problem parts. That “no visible rust” comment is a big positive.

Capitalism and the Free Market are mechanisms. They can be useful in balancing supply and demand and for directing capital to where it does the most benefit for the most people.

But they have been turned into an ideology; a belief that the unfettered Free Market is some Divine State of Perfection that we should strive for, that if only Government stopped interfering, Enlightened Self-Interest would solve all our problems and the Invisible Hand would grasp us firmly but gently and guide us to a Happy Ending every time…

I owned the B model, the hatchback. Make sure you can get a mechanic that can deal with Lucas Electrical and S.U. oil float carbs. Always make sure the knock off wheels are tight. If you strip them they can be hard to find. But fun, and beautiful from back in the day. Nice.

I’m joking a bit, but I know a lot of cars guys that loved their MGs.

So they went out and bought a Mazda Miata.

They are of course reliable and they even make great little race cars, so there are nice performance parts for them.

I don’t think the Trumps have done anything in their lives that isn’t corrupt, especially over the past 3-4 years. They couldn’t resist using even their charity to grift, or wounded veterans. We are going to have to sage the White House when they’re gone and create a barrier around Mar-a-Lago to contain them until they all die off. I wish I was kidding but after the whole Bible signing thing I realized part of our population sees them all as deities.

We pretty much checked everything on those checklists, but we’re going back with a mechanic who will put it up on the lift and let us know if everything is cool before we pull the trigger.

My wife is so excited to get this car! And she more than deserves it, and seeing her excited makes me very happy.

Update on Daisy:
Managed to get an appointment with the veterinarian today. All of her bloodwork came back normal, so none of the expected horrible possibilities for an elderly dog came to pass.
She hasn’t been able to hold down food or water since Thursday, so was extremely dehydrated. She had a slightly elevated temperature, but no obvious pain. No obvious lumps. Nice pink gums and clear eyes.

Vet said it appears to be gastritis (aka stomach flu).

He gave her a good size bolus of fluids, so she looks like a little camel right now. An antibiotic for whatever associated infection she may have, and some anti-nausea med to give her for the next 10 days.

Right now she is zonked out at my feet.

Looks like the little terror has a few more years left in her.

I am the happy.

It was a bittersweet vet visit today.
Excellent news for Daisy, but the vet told us that he just started dialysis and is waiting to be approved by the transplant team at University of Kentucky.
DrG is one of the best vets around. A few years ago, he saved the life of our other dog, Glory the big goofy coonhound, when she came down with sudden-onset pyometra. We really did not think she would survive the night, much less the major surgery the next day. But she did.

So, DrG is gonna be getting all of the good vibes I can bundle up and head his way.

I know that you can imagine my extreme relief.
My mind was running rampant with horrid possible outcomes and I was completely convinced that I would not be bringing her home.

If we had *not* taken her in today, she would in all likelihood (due to here age) no longer be with us in a few days and it would have been a very painful end because of starvation and dehydration.

Just goes to show…needless worries can have consequences.
(I was also worried about being seen as a bad dogmom because her shedding prob is the pre-matt stage. But fuck that when my furbabies feel awful. I’ll get over it, they might not.)

These cars are a delight to work on, and the Internet has made parts much more available. For either one, take a magnet with you and test the body panels to see if they’ve got lots of Bondo covering up rust or severe damage to the steel panels.

Jaguar started doing it in 1974 on the XKE to meet the new 5 MPH bumper standard. MGB’s got a strap-on black rubber bumper in late ‘74 models and this was fully incorporated, front and back, in all of the ‘75’s.

I thought it busted up the pristine lines of the original shape, but there you go.

The MGB is SO much easier to work on than a Triumph. Lots room under the bonnet, logically laid out, and if it has the Weber she drafts, much more reliable. Except for the Lucas grounding strap, which is a just motherfucking sumbitch.
