A short update on Puerto Rico:
In general, David Begnaud has done a marvelous job reporting the events in PR.
Protests are still going strong, with thousands going every day to the Fortaleza (Governor’s mansion). Big name artists (from Ricky Martin, and Bad Bunny, to Daddy Yankee, and Gilberto Santa Rosa) are making calls all over social media, on award shows (Premios Juventud), and even on their concerts for Rosselló to resign.
The impeachment process is right now on the ball of the legislative branch, which is controlled by Rossello’s party, the PNP (shameless plug to PR’s quick political primer). The House president, Johnny Mendez, commissioned a group of jurists to evaluate if the impeachment process can be started. The Puerto Rico Bar evaluated the chat and found possible criminal charges, but Mendez said he’s not going to use that evaluation.
To further complicate Rosselló’s life, an investigative report went over the chat and uncovered a web to pillage as much money as possible from most agencies. This scheme involves many of his inner circle, including many in the infamous Telegram chat. This will likely continue with more FBI investigations.
To add another nail in his coffin, a close friend of Rosselló’s father, and a mentor figure for the current governor talked deeply about Ricky Rosselló’s shady past. In summary, Ricky has lived a sheltered life, and his family has protected him from the consequences of his actions. He was given contracts with the only purpose of being a point of contact with his father, former governor and (at the moment of that contract) Senator Pedro Rosselló. In turn, he used this money to start a Silicon Valley company. Even back then, he was surrounded by many of his current inner circle.
And now many Democratic Presidential hopefuls are weighting in the situation. 7 have ask for Rosselló’s resignation so far, and likely many more will lend their voices.
I’ll finish with this video taken this afternoon, with the crowd singing the unofficial hymn of Puerto Rico, especially those that have left the Island:
In an emotional moment, hundreds of people just sang “En mi viejo San Juan” in front of the Governor mansion - @Carlostole_ has the context: “The song was written in 1942 for Estrada’s brother who had been deployed to Panama during World War II & was feeling nostalgia for his… pic.twitter.com/5M7M2Iq2cy

14/14, though if you asked me to come up with a red herring, I would have trouble.
So yesterday, the guy who has been discussing dark matter with me as an attempt to prove that scientists don’t do science right (one of favorite topics is the idea of a scientist publishing a paper and going “Nobel please!’) told me yesterday that he went down to Marble Falls (located near Austin) and while he remembers it from his childhood has being barren, it’s now green and lush due to the high CO2. I told him later that he needs to watch out that he’s not confusing human engineering for what he thinks is happening.

CO2 is plant fuud. Doh.
Tell duder that increased C02 may affect growth but it also affects nutrient levels and plant life cycles. They may get a little bigger or grow a little faster but may not have as much nutrients, so we’ll have to eat more.
The smartest folks I know who I follow on Twitter are women scientists.
What do you talk about when backstage with Buzz Aldrin between acts? Rockets and trajectories, mostly. In *extensive* detail. Plus some fun anecdotes about that time he FLEW THROUGH SPACE AND WALKED ON THE MOON. And you try to avoid politics.
— Katie Mack (@AstroKatie) July 21, 2019
It’s become impossible by this point to deny the reality, and the effort to “debunk” the science has become exponentially expensive due to the number of studies supporting the conclusions, so the only option left seems to be “CLIMATE CHANGE IS GOOD FOR THE PLANET!”
From the same crowd that thinks easing restrictions on the release of heavy metals and sulfur from coal plants is a net good because the power is “cheap.”

I mentioned that one, and also the part about the dry line moving east. His interest in science derives in part from the urge to disprove climate change, so we’ll see what happens.

I put aside the horror of Hey America, Let’s Try Fascism Again for a couple of hours this evening and tuned into this website:
Press “Now” to jump to whatever Apollo 11 was doing at this moment. It’s a really great multimedia mash-up of video, flight control audio, pictures coming up as they were taken in real mission time, and notes & commentary. I feel like I should send somebody money after watching this.
I watched the whole EVA while the Moon rose in my bedroom window so I could turn from my screen and look up at the spot on the rabbit’s ears where it was happening exactly fifty years ago. This is the kind of thing that makes the internet worthwhile. :)
After the EVA ended, the flight control room audio had a recording of one of the controllers calling his wife/lady friend and having a personal conversation about what had just happened. I don’t know if the controller used a desk phone & forgot/didn’t care if it was recorded, or what, but it was kind of fun and surreal to hear a non-professional conversation about what had just happened.

The closest place for me is Sterling, Colorado. Bringing back across the state line makes that a federal felony. I’m not risking that.
Plus my understanding is weed shops in Colorado will only sell 1/8 ounce to someone from out-of-state. A stint in the federal pen for 1/8 ounce seems a bit too severe for me.
Has anyone heard how Wheatdog is doing? I forget who was in contact with his family. He and Anymouse keep the night traffic going. It’s a pretty fucking boring night if all you have is me. I had a really profound observation of aging about 20 minutes ago but I forgot what it was.

See? It’s the association with the sea. There’s a reason there aren’t many rum distillers in South Dakota.

The Middle East reminds me of Europe in the early 20th century. Lots of nationalism and factionalism. And not a lot of interest in cooperation. I’m always hearing from Trump and his allies that nationalism is great. As a student of both World Wars, I couldn’t disagree more.

Thomas Westbrook (Holy Koolaid at YouTube) put out a video calling out a pastor at the New Independent Fundamentalist Baptist Church (Steven Anderson’s group). NIFB calls for using state power to execute LGBT+ individuals.
YouTube blocked Mr. Westbrook from posting more videos, citing a violation of it’s rules on hate speech.
I saw the video before it was taken down; there was no hate speech. The silencing of atheists continues at YouTube by mass-brigading false reports by Christians (and not just fundies, Christians of all denominations do it: They cannot defend their positions so they use YouTube’s flagging system to silence those who call them out.)

Well, it’s on my driver’s license, not my plates. My plates are Gold Star Family (though I am also eligible for either disabled veteran plates without a handicap symbol [we have both] or retired Navy plates).

My oldest daughter drinks whiskey, I don’t know how she does it. Whiskey, scotch, bourbon all are instant heartburn for me. Mixed rum and beer are my forte, and I can drink gin and tonic. Speaking of which, I wonder how Klys is doing. I hope they are OK.
I would rather be hit on the head with a whiskey bottle than drink from it. Even fine single malts are wasted on me.
My taste is clear alcohol: vodka, tequila, gin, white rum, etc.

“Pee-order?” Well, pee is a word, and order is a word, and if it’s hyphenated a spell checker will assess it as two words.
Pre-order interestingly enough comes up in Firefox’s spell check as an error, with or without a hyphen.

An older Jewish chap gets on the streetcar on Prinz Wilhelm Strasse, and sees his neighbor Moshe reading that week’s edition of Der Stürmer.
He sits down next to Moshe and says, “Moshe! How on earth can you read that filth? Der Stürmer?! Streicher’s newspaper, that maniac?!”
Moshe says, “Sure. When I read the Berliner Tageblatt, all I read is about boycotts of Jewish shops, these brownshirts beating up women in the streets, Rabbis being harassed for no reason. But when I read Der Stürmer, well, we own the banks, we own all the newspapers, we have the whole German nation eating out of the palm of our hands! What could be better?”

For a racist, they don’t. They just pick some random country they can name in Asia (Japan, China, South Korea, &c).
Even when Nikki Haley was running for governor of South Carolina, politicians in her own party were telling her to “go back where she came from.”
When liberals and others called them out on their racism, they immediately retreated to the position “we meant Upstate.”

Surnames don’t always tell the whole story but I agree that it’s not rude if you’re not showing malice or implying it. My surname is German and my German ancestors arrived between 1840-1882 in the Castle Garden era. But I’m more ancestrally Slavic with people who arrived in the Ellis Island era.

My daughter gets some of that. She came from Korea at 13 months. I know it makes her feel like she sticks out. People want to know why she doesn’t have an accent. Yeah, the accent thing is annoying. As a Texan who went to college in Massachusetts, I got asked that question.

Our family lineage is likely to end, as neither my son nor my sister are interested in having children.

My surname pretty much gives away what country my father’s family comes from “something something ends in cz.”
I am constantly surprised at how many people can’t pronounce my name and think it ends in “ski”
re: #136 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
Our family surname had a cz in the middle of it, which was changed to ch in America
My wife’s family’s surname was Seawolf, and customs people dropped the “awo” for them.

Well it’s my grandmother’s maiden name. My own surname is me, my dad, 3 uncles, brothers, niece, & my one uncle’s two daughters. Not a lot of sons with sons here. With my grandmother, her uncle had a lot of sons who had a lot of sons.

My mother tells a story about when she was stationed at NAS Norfolk, and several people in her division in a row alphabetically had Polish names. When roll was called, it would be “ski” “ski” “ski” &c. They learned which “ski” they were to answer to muster.

I’ve always thought my grandmother- Rusyn Slovak parentage had a little bit of Asian features in her eyes. Makes sense. They’re Eastern Slavs and Eastern Slavs have mixed with East Asian groups more recently than South Slavs like my grandfather’s line who are from Slovenia. I myself get told I have sleepy looking eyes.
As a male of European descent I’ve been free from all the bullshit. But here in South America I’ve got a tiny feel for what it’s like to stick out. It’s clear I’m a foreigner. I’m much taller than most everyone and people stare at me. They wonder why I am in a certain neighborhood or on a certain bus. My Northern European pale skin is notable. They wonder if I’m one of the nice ones or one of the rude ones. Some resent me being here. Nobody has told me to go back where I came from (yet) but I can imagine how much that would hurt. Just the tiniest taste without the horror that non- white people in the US taste every day. I’m so surprised that they don’t hate me just on account of my nation’s crimes against them.

Way I’d do it would be the first letter of the surname. So say the person’s name was Kowalski, I’d call them K-ski. My grandmother’s maiden name ends in cik but it’s pronounced chik in the old country and by our New York/New Jersey cousins as it does in our ancestral language.

It’s crazy how names can be said differently in the same family. My dad’s mom said her maiden name completely different than how it’s said in County Down/her brother the priest and County Down was a part of Ireland that became English speaking much quicker than the parts where her mother’s family cane from in the Gaeltacht.
My mother’s side of the family had their name Anglicized from the original French as they moved to British Canada from Quebec. I think of myself as 75% British and 25% Fucking Dutch or French, depending on where the border on the day of egress. (Nobody likes the Dutch)

When Non-Jews Wield Anti-Semitism as Political Shield (Goes to GQ, the lede):
There’s a meme I’ve seen go around a thousand times in Jewish spaces online—in Facebook groups, or Twitter exchanges between snarky leftist Jews—a still from a Yiddish lesson series on Youtube, with the phrase “The Jews Are Tired.” It’s an all-purpose response for Gentile fuckery—speaking for Jews, about Jews, around Jews, against Jews, utilizing us without our consent or input. Black background, white letters: The Jews Are Tired.
And after the past few days, in which a fleet of Republicans and the president himself have utilized Jews as human shields for racist rhetoric, the Jews are tired, tired, tired of being used as defenses against naked racism, tired of being used to justify conditions at detention camps. Just plain tired.

Vanity Fair has an article about Epstein where they interview employees at the airstrip on St. Thomas (near Epstein’s private island). The article reports that Epstein continued to bring underage girls to the island as recently as this year.
Here’s what they had to say:
“They looked very young. They were always wearing college sweatshirts. It seemed like camouflage, that’s the best way to put it.”
“The fact that young girls were getting out of his helicopter and getting into his plane, it was like he was flaunting it, … But it was said that he always tipped really well, so everyone overlooked it.”
“My colleagues and I definitely talked about how we didn’t understand how this guy was still allowed to be around children, … We didn’t say anything because we figured law enforcement was doing their job. I have to say that that is regrettable, but we really didn’t even know who to tell, or if anyone really cared.”
I want Epstein to be stripped of all his assets and rot in jail.

There is almost a day when it all went bad. In the early 60s NYC had the usual racial and especially ethnic crap you get when a bunch of people are dumped on top of each other, but it was basically cool. I could ride a bike down 125th street with no worries except taxi cabs. The only place I wouldn’t go at all hours of day or night was The Bowery, and that had nothing to do with race. I had tickets for a Jimmy Smith concert at the Apollo. Then a white cop shot a 14 year old kid, and I never got to use them.
Maggie Haberman’s latest hot take, “it was a different era” is the same excuse Christians use to wave away mandated slavery in the Bible, in both Testaments.
re: #171 The Pie Overlord!
That’s pulling no punches, to put it mildly.
Trump is younger than Bill Clinton. Bill Clinton was going to school as integration was happening. I believe Bill has talked about how hearing I Have a Dream moved him. My one uncle. Just a year younger than Trump was telling me how much he loved the Obama’s and he also likes Kamala Harris. Trump is a bigot. It’s not because of when and where he grew up. It’s because he’s an unrepentant bigot who would be nothing in politics without it to distract from he has nothing to offer the country.

This abortion clinic is blessed (Opinion piece at Religion News Service, more at the link):
(RNS) — The other day, I joined clergy from many faiths in a worship service that, like many others, featured poetry, music, ritual and prayer. But this service was different. Its purpose was to bring blessings on a reproductive health clinic that provides abortions.
With their presence as well as their prayers, 10 diverse faith leaders proclaimed what too few people have heard: Religious people can be pro-choice, not in spite of their faith but because of it.
Too few have heard this, in large part because Christian conservatives have been exceptionally loud and strident in condemning abortion as religiously and morally unacceptable. But their religious understanding of abortion is not the only understanding. It never has been.

Giant manta ray ‘begs snorkeler to help save her life in incredible encounter’ (The Independent)
A giant manta ray has been filmed appearing to beg a professional diver for help saving her life.
The three-metre-wide sea creature is shown swimming up to snorkelling guide Jake Wilton and flipping over in the water - apparently to show him fish hooks embedded in her right eye.
The footage, caught near Ningaloo Reef off Western Australia’s north west coast, seems to show the manta ray then staying perfectly still as Mr Wilton gently removes the potentially deadly spikes.
The animal - well known to locals and affectionately nicknamed Freckles - then swims away with a flourish as the diver emerges triumphantly with the hooks.

Mary Ann Mendoza’s name sounded familiar, so I looked it up.
She is the founder of “The Remembrance Project” (which promotes the so-called Angel Moms).
The Remembrance Project (Extremist Group) (Goes to the Southern Poverty Law Center)
She also founded the group in 2009, many years before her son was killed. She goes by “Mary Ann” now but used to go by “Maria.” I’m not sure if that’s because she just likes the Anglicization of her name, or she’s trying to hide her extremist roots. (Photographs of Mary Ann and Maria are the same person.)
While the Remembrance Project claims to advocate on behalf of the families of victims of violence and tragedy, its founder Maria Espinoza grossly misrepresents the level of crime committed by immigrants, routinely demonizes immigrants as “invaders,” and has a record of working with white nationalists.

In 2005, Donald Trump had an idea to boost ratings for “The Apprentice,” … Trump suggested putting an all-white team against an all-black team and he thought it would become the highest-rated show on television.
He floated the idea on Howard Stern’s radio show in April 2005, … “Do you like it?” Trump asked Stern. To which he replied: “Yes.” Trump then asked Stern’s African-American co-host, Robin Quivers, the same question. “Well,” she said, “I think you’re going to have a riot.”
…”I think that it would be handled very beautifully by me. Because, as you know, I’m very diplomatic,” he said to Stern, adding that while there would be a mix of light-skinned and dark-skinned black contestants, the white team would be strictly blondes only. Source: Business Insider

Yep, and I just let it pass at places like the doctor’s office. No use correcting it. But I don’t want those asshats at Apologia using my legal name *at all*. The only people who use my legal name are people I’ve known for at least 30 years, not these johnny come latelys who think using my name somehow gives them some sort of familiarity with me.

Among other things the show has the right to (including your origin story), they have the right to edit the show as they wish, even if it makes you look like the bad guy/gal of the season.
So @realDonaldTrump now wants us to forget his tweets & what the videos showed about his North Carolina rally. We will not forget.

I read in an article about Trump’s time on the Apprentice that the people who worked on the show would have to frequently re-edit because Trump would randomly fire someone, and they had to re-edit so that decision made some kind of sense (i.e., make the person who was fired look like the deserved to be fired).

One of my memories when my Nana first showed signs of dementia was there was a PBS Bill documentary on that hymn. The message of that hymn, written by a former slave trader resonated with her who missed her husband, sisters, brother, parents, & other people she had grown up with dearly. She still loved us but she clearly wanted to see them again. I don’t know what happens when we die but I had never wanted an afterlife more than the day she passed away.

And what pissed me off to no end was when he genuinely engaged with people who didn’t agree with him in a good faith attempt to explain his position. I’m looking at you Joe the (not) Plumber. The right and the press would mock him endlessly.
One of the things I like about C++ is that I can write code in such a way that the compiler will fail if I don’t put things together correctly. I wish they would come up with a version of C++, though, that less worried about C compliance than with generating safe code.
And no, Java doesn’t improve on this, because their implementation of generics is based on type erasure, and I write generic code all the time. I’ve had the compiler force me to treat something as an Object just to get it to fit into somewhere I knew what the actual type is going to be just so it would compile.

Fair enough. There were plenty of PUMAs during the 2008 primary.
The right had hostility to Obama from the minute the RNC in 2008 started with assists from the usual suspects like Rush, Lumpy, & others. The left had many that expected him to be a progressive savior. So when ACA wasn’t the most progressive health care reform ever, they acted like he betrayed them. The Secret Service does not protect representatives or senators. Most senators or representatives are protected by a private security detail they pay for if they feel they need it. Most don’t do that.
After the Republican softball practice shooting, only nine representatives were protected by the Capital Police, the rest were on their own.
I guess protecting and serving only applies to some people.

Little Stevie lost his safe space on Fox
After Miller tried to change the subject to criminal gang members, Wallace shut him down, reminding him that Trump had pushed racist “birther” attacks on Barack Obama. Miller likened those efforts to undermine the legitimacy of the former president to questions that were once raised about John McCain. Wallace quickly fact-checked him, noting that concerns surrounding the late Arizona senator were not racial, but based on the 2008 nominee’s birth in the Panama Canal Zone.
Miller then argued that questioning people’s Americanism is okay as long as you don’t intend it to be racist.
Wallace also fact-checked Miller when he attempted to claim Trump had been “clear” that he disagreed with his supporters’ racist chant — repeating his own attacks on Omar and demanding she be sent back to Somalia.
“No, he was clear after the fact,” he responded. “He let it go on for 13 seconds and [it] was only when it diminished that he started talking again.” Wallace noted that Trump “said nothing there or in his tweet after that rally that indicated any concern about the chant.” Source: Think Progress

Did U.S. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez Say ‘We Pay Soldiers Too Much’? (Goes to “facts have a liberal bias” Snopes)
A frequent publisher of junk news and inflammatory misinformation targeted U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in July 2019, falsely claiming that she had said the United States pays soldiers “way too much.”
On July 16, Taters Gonna Tate posted an article with the headline “Ocasio-Cortez on the Budget: ‘We Pay Soldiers Too Much,’” which reported that:
“… Alexandra [sic] Ocasio-Cortez is fairly well-known for spouting out little ‘ideas’ that most people would figure out were, well, dumb. This time, it seems the Baby Boss has been perusing the proposed budget sheet for the upcoming months, and had her little mind blown by what she saw, leading her to proclaim in an open session of Congress that : ‘Wow! We pay soldiers WAY too much!’”
As of July 2019, Ocasio-Cortez has never said this, either in a session of Congress or in any other forum. The source of the fabricated article, Taters Gonna Tate, is part of a network of sites and social media accounts operated by Christopher Blair, who produces a high volume of junk news and misinformation, much of it inflammatory, which he presents as “satire.”

I just saw this from yesterday, like Amazeballs WTF Holy Moly:
Trump Employs an Old Tactic: Using Race for Gain
For the fourth season of “The Apprentice,” Donald J. Trump searched for a gimmick to bolster ratings. His idea was simple if explosive — pit an all-white team against an all-black team.
He sounded enthusiastic during his appearance on Mr. Stern’s show in 2005. Mr. Stern asked if there would be both light-skinned and dark-skinned contestants on the black team and Mr. Trump said it would be an “assortment.” As for the white team, Mr. Trump said it should include all blonds.
Even as he egged him on, Mr. Stern expressed more concern about the ramifications than Mr. Trump. “Wouldn’t that set off a racial war in this country?” he asked.
“See, actually, I don’t think it would,” Mr. Trump replied. “I think that it would be handled very beautifully by me. Because, as you know, I’m very diplomatic.”
Mr. Stern agreed. “I gotta tell you something, on some level it’s wrong,” he went on. “But I like it. I like it. I would watch.”
“You’d have to,” Ms. Quivers replied, “because you’d want to know when the riot starts.”

What’ll really be disruptive is that AI will take over areas that were previously white collar jobs - whether it’s accounting, legal, tax, or other service sector jobs.
Manufacturing is already highly automated - and that’ll get more so. Transportation will increasingly get automated. Truckers are another industry that will see robots replace them. Walmart is toying with robots doing cleanup and alerting to spills. We’ll see them do more with shelf stocking in coming years.
It’s all coming - and the millionaire class thinks that they’re insulated from the change as they continue to consolidate wealth while everyone else is struggling.

Ellis Island became a thing because the nation decided to throttle immigration. Those in power didn’t want to see that power diminished so they started to reduce immigration and make it tougher to get in.
Before that, if you had a ticket to come, you got in. If you were brought here in chains, you had no control over that either.
And in all those cases, those who came here displaced the Native Americans who were here before any Europeans came ashore.

The Pitchforks Are Coming… For Us Plutocrats
By NICK HANAUER
If we don’t do something to fix the glaring inequities in this economy, the pitchforks are going to come for us. No society can sustain this kind of rising inequality. In fact, there is no example in human history where wealth accumulated like this and the pitchforks didn’t eventually come out. You show me a highly unequal society, and I will show you a police state. Or an uprising. There are no counterexamples. None. It’s not if, it’s when.
Here’s what I say to you: You’re living in a dream world. What everyone wants to believe is that when things reach a tipping point and go from being merely crappy for the masses to dangerous and socially destabilizing, that we’re somehow going to know about that shift ahead of time. Any student of history knows that’s not the way it happens. Revolutions, like bankruptcies, come gradually, and then suddenly. One day, somebody sets himself on fire, then thousands of people are in the streets, and before you know it, the country is burning. And then there’s no time for us to get to the airport and jump on our Gulfstream Vs and fly to New Zealand. That’s the way it always happens. If inequality keeps rising as it has been, eventually it will happen. We will not be able to predict when, and it will be terrible—for everybody. But especially for us.
The most ironic thing about rising inequality is how completely unnecessary and self-defeating it is. If we do something about it, if we adjust our policies in the way that, say, Franklin D. Roosevelt did during the Great Depression—so that we help the 99 percent and preempt the revolutionaries and crazies, the ones with the pitchforks—that will be the best thing possible for us rich folks, too. It’s not just that we’ll escape with our lives; it’s that we’ll most certainly get even richer.
