Bernie Sanders Suspends His Campaign (Full Speech)

This is the political news of the day. It was just a matter of time, and now the other shoe has dropped.

However, note that Bernie is not endorsing Joe Biden, he’s remaining on ballots, and he still wants his followers to vote for him so he can collect delegates and influence the Democratic Party platform.

Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., holds a virtual news conference where he makes remarks after suspending his 2020 presidential campaign.

Trump’s already out there calling Biden a socialist, so there’s that.

Trump will continue ratfucking no matter what.
Trump and GOP will continue to try and suppress voter turnout - in primaries and general elections nationwide - with the complete and total support of the right wing extremists who make up the majority of the Court thanks to McConnell.

Simply beating Trump in November isn’t enough. We need to not only retake the Senate, but have to deal with the near-permanent damage Trump and McConnell have wrought. There are no easy answers here. We’re going to need time and votes in every fucking election to make sure that the GOP remain out of power.

So he’s suspending his campaign…but he’s also asking his supporters to continue to show up at the remaining primaries to give him enough delegates to use as leverage at the convention.

In what universe does that make any sense?

It’s well beyond that - this is state by state. We have to turn red states and their legislatures blue and purple. We can’t let the GOP steadily subvert democracy and our Republic anymore, we’ve seen the results and where that is headed.

Not only do we need to hold the House and get the Senate. We have to kill the filibuster, personal holds, blue slips and 60 vote threshold in the Senate. Republicans have to be locked out of any possibility to block any action we take.

And Biden needs to appoint a Special Prosecutor to go after every last crooked Republican. It just might fit to have an ex-Republican like Richard Painter go after Trump, McConnell and the rest of the fucking crooks!

So long as he’s still on the ballots, he’s still a viable candidate. Which means he could still potentially pull together enough delegates to lead to a brokered convention.

CL’d on the last thread

Shorter post-mortem on Bernie Sanders: “Don’t get high on your own supply”

After Sanders won big in Nevada he had a golden opportunity to show he could unite the party and take on Trump. But he didn’t budge an inch from his insurgent, doctrinaire democratic socialist stance. When asked about his past comments praising communist dictators, he couldn’t even bring himself to denounce them without caveat and, in the process, demonstrate that he cared more about winning than in freebasing 100 percent pure, uncut Bern.

And if his win in Nevada didn’t convince him to reach out across the party, then neither did his trouncing in South Carolina. On the night that his campaign received one of the biggest rebukes a Democratic frontrunner had been given in a long time, Sanders had the opportunity to speak to the party and the country.

What did he do with that time? He spent umpteen minutes giving pretty much the same stemwinder as always—with a special focus on how he would increase voter turnout in the general election.

There were two problems with this. The first is that it wasn’t what he needed to do in order to broaden his coalition. The second is that it wasn’t true. He hadn’t triggered massive turnout expansions in Iowa, New Hampshire, or South Carolina. In the face of actual election results that disproved their own BS, Bernie and team still believed it. And so the only electability argument he had to make rang hollow to the high information Democratic primary voters who were hopping from candidate to candidate looking for someone who could beat the despised Donald Trump.

That is, to look at what wins elections, what gains power. Make sure voting is easy or at least easier. More ways for people to participate. Make sure that as many of our people can show up and as few of their do.

It’s not just the elected officials. It’s the entire scaffolding of extreme wealth and unlimited political spending that has hijacked every level of government.

Since Reagan in ‘80, there has been a systematic dismantling of gov’t where it is not perverted to funnel more money into the pockets of the already sickeningly wealthy. It’s going to take 40 years of trench warfare, to roll those decades of mistakes back.

The alliance — which is supported by the Lupus Foundation of America, Lupus Research Alliance and the American College of Rheumatology — has called on clinicians to report “all cases of COVID-19 in rheumatology patients, including those with mild or no symptoms.”

As of April 2, the group had information on 110 validated patients: 36% with rheumatoid arthritis, 17% with psoriatic arthritis and 17% with systemic lupus erythematosus, or lupus, an autoimmune disease.

“One frequently asked question: over 25% of patients who developed a COVID-19 were on HCQ at the time of diagnosis,” the group said in a tweet thread on April 2, referring to hydroxychloroquine.

“Based on early data currently available in our registry, we are not able to report any evidence of a protective effect from hydroxychloroquine against COVID-19,”

President Trump’s aides have begun intensive discussions on a plan to reopen the US economy as soon as the start of May, according to people familiar with the deliberations

“reopening” the economy does not mean that they will just be able to kick-start it and see it reset to pre-Covid levels.

People will still be avoiding crowded sports and concert venues, amusement parks, cineplexes, cruise lines, airports and airliners in large numbers.

JFC. They really are trying to kill us.

(Via NBC) WASHINGTON — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is considering changing its guidelines for self-isolation to make it easier for those who have been exposed to someone with the coronavirus to return to work if they are asymptomatic.

The public health agency, in conjunction with the White House coronavirus task force, is considering an announcement as soon as Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence said.

Under the proposed guidance, people who are exposed to someone infected would be allowed back on the job if they are asymptomatic, test their temperature twice a day and wear a face mask, said a person familiar with the proposal under consideration. The person described the proposal on the condition of anonymity because the draft had not been finalized.

The new policy is aimed in particular at workers in critical jobs. But it also comes as the Trump administration is eyeing what it calls a “stabilization” in infection rates and looks toward rolling back some of the restrictive social distancing guidelines and restarting the nation’s stalled economy.

On my wish list: statehood for D.C. and P.R., and expanding the Supreme Court to make up for the two stolen seats. But I don’t expect the Democrats to abolish the filibuster, even if they do win control of the Senate.

SANDERS: “I will stay on the ballot in all remaining states and continue to gather delegates. While Vice President Biden will be the nominee, we must continue working to assemble as many delegates as possible… to exert significant influence over the party platform.”

I’ve seen some speculation by campaign pros that this was some sort of split-the-baby decision brought on by a completely divided staff. I’d assume the pros were telling him it’s time to fold the tent and the grifters and nutcases wanted to keep the party going.

If this means he’s not advertising or campaigning it’s just stupid. The non-crazy supporters are just going to think he dropped out and not bother voting for him, and he’ll get whomped worse in every upcoming state and look like a sad sack loser.

The Clinton campaign and the Democratic organizations bent over backwards after 2016 to include Sanders and let him influence matters; how’d that turn out? So why should we do this again? Just smile and let him know that Your Opinion Is Important To Us and treat it accordingly.

Hail came with the thunderstorm early this morning (2:30am). My neighbor commented, when I talked to her this morning, that it was one of the few times she has head a thunderstorm actually “rolling in”. You could hear it as a dull rumble off to south for a while before it arrived.

Had another thunderstorm come through at 4am, then it was sunny the rest of the morning. Cloudy now, but quite warm (70 F).

Moldy, the guy who fired Captain Crozier was both acting naval secretary and acting assistant naval secretary. Still, that’s too many markets to have to buy into for a first-in-country primary. OR being in the lead set is a painful cost of entry that might have kept out some of the folks who went to Iowa (admittedly, folks like Mayor Pete who went no further).

Oregon is a cheaper media buy than Iowa.

You get about 75% of the state by buying Portland. The other markets are tiny and incredibly cheap to buy airtime in.

Compare that to Iowa, where Des Moines is cheaper to buy than PDX, but only gets you about 40% of households. You also need to buy Cedar Rapids and the Quad Cities, both of which are much bigger and pricier than the other small Oregon markets. And Sioux City, which doesn’t cost much.

But you also MUST buy the fairly large Omaha market if you want Council Bluffs and western Iowa viewers. And you need to buy two more small markets to get the rest of the state - you need the Rochester/Austin MN stations to get into Mason City, and you need the Kirksville MO station to hit Ottumwa.

Iowa is MUCH more complex and expensive for a complete media buy than Oregon would be.

(Want simple and easy? You want Maine. Portland, Bangor and the one station up in Presque Isle and you’re done.)

And so, that leaves us where we started: It’s just not doable.

“…The Trump administration’s enthusiasm for the drug is based on anecdotal studies conducted on a relative handful of patients, said Dr. Allen Zagoren, a surgeon and professor of public administration at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

“When you have a disease that’s affecting a million people, you need to have bigger numbers to project because that could be coincidental — the disease is very unpredictable,” Zagoren said.

“You need to have a big study to predict. When you start throwing stuff at the wall to see what will stick, that’s garbled information — it’s garbage in, garbage out.”

Then there’s the issue of side effects, Zagoren noted: the drug carries a host of potential issues, particularly for people with pre-existing conditions, compromised immune systems, cardiopulmonary problems — the very people who are most likely to be vulnerable to the severe effects of COVID-19 in the first place.

Hydroxychloroquine is also often administered with an antibacterial known as azithromycin that carries a heightened risk of death in patients with a pre-existing heart condition.

“If I was asked to review a case for a lawyer or the board of medicine that a physician decided to give a drug to the patient that had no proven efficacy off-label and the patient died, that’s negligence,” Zagoren said.

“Write the cheque, because you can’t defend that.”

Oh, Lord, I must be sleepy or something, I’m missing the full impact of my own statements. That also makes Hillary’s defeat back into a fully-bad thing because any President other than Trump—even Pence or Cruz, but especially a Dem— would be paying attention to the Daily Briefing, and thus be aware two and a half months before Beijing is willing to admit it that the coronavirus in question has evolved human-to-human transmission.

And that means the pandemic may have been able to be headed off (though at a cost to US-China relations that would make them as frosty as US-Russia relations would already have been under Hillary), and in turn that would mean that I can no longer comfort myself telling her she’d have been doomed to a single term, which also means a possibility her successor wouldn’t have been the final President elected by the Fifty States.

How is it that every last bit of news makes this timeline worse than it had been?

So he’s suspending his campaign…but he’s also asking his supporters to continue to show up at the remaining primaries to give him enough delegates to use as leverage at the convention.

In what universe does that make any sense?

In a universe where American political parties actually have some power? Like, the platform is fun for insiders and whatnot, but most people don’t care. And members of Congress typically have enough independence from the party leadership to vote their conscious/needs of their district even when something is in the party platform and it comes up for a vote.

There’s an irony in a self-proclaimed independent trying to build a movement outside the party structure also trying to reshape a party he is not a part of.

Not only that, but any other president would have fully staffed the government, including the CDC and State Department… which means we wouldn’t have lost a shit ton of institutional knowledge and expertise.

And it is entirely possible that any other president wouldn’t have been engaged in a three year long pissing match with China, meaning the ability to work with them on the pandemic early might have actually been there and still led to a better outcome, without necessarily destroying the relationship between the US and China.

Couple of theories that I’ve heard:

So this may not be a popular opinion here, but everybody reflexively trying to shit on hydroxychloroquine kind of bothers me. The science isn’t in, studies are in process. Doctors all over the world were already using hydroxychloroquine to treat covid before Trump ever mentioned it because it is cheap, has known antiviral properties and also has immuno suppressive properties that reduces inflamation which is why it is used to treat RA and why it could potentially help reduce inflammation in the lungs.

As for it being unproven, well covid-19 is novel, there are no proven treatments. Anything any doctor prescribes is unproven. There are doctors trying all sorts of antivirals because when you have someone in front of you going south fast you do what you can.

Trump is an idiot for putting so much emphasis on HCQ but how about letting the studies finish before making the same mistake in the other direction.

And that’s why he’s a selfish jerk in it only for himself. Considering the crisis that Trump has caused Sanders should have said in the same breath “I’m dropping out and vote for Biden because he’s the only chance we have to defeat trump”.

Nope. He wants to keep getting that sweet sweet political money as well as groveling from the Democratic Party so he can feel important.

Hey Bernie - GO AWAY. Hey Bernie Bros - the country is in your hands. Don’t vote for Biden and you’ve doomed us.

We are going after the people who are using it to distract from their failures, making people think it’s a wonder drug, causing people harm by hoarding it, trying to make money off of it, without any proof that it does anything. It is perfectly fine for us to go after them.

As for the drug itself, though, it has a number of possible side effects, which is why the French and Swedes have stopped testing. I also make fun of the drugs on TV that talk about how they can help you, but one possible side effect is death.

sore loser laws say no

Sore loser laws seem to not exist for Presidential electors in most states (since both they’re theoretically being the ones truly elected, and even more-liberal SCsOTUS have held that when it comes to Federal office, the States aren’t permitted to make a single law altering the Constitution’s requirements whether it adds to or subtracts from them, and the best case is that Congress can change them via statute, the medium case is that only an amendment can alter them, and the worst case is that not even an amendment could alter them and you would need to abrogate the whole Constituition and technically create a new country on this one’s turf in order to do anything about it, just like the “equal representation” clause for the Senate.)

I wish I was wrong, but I looked it up because I had been confident about that, but I found credible evidence elsewhere when it looked like Tulski was the sore loser we had to worry about that we were out of exactly no woods that way.

The big problem with double-blind testing on a disease this fatal is that you have to at least be planning to actively condemn the control group to death—and not a slow one like the chronic diseases that typically are what have to have double-blind, placebo-based [most acute diseases these days can at least be treated ‘less effectively’ with an alternative existing drug that serves as the control group], trials conducted on them, but 3 weeks at most from onset to cremation.

Unfortunately I see no scientifically-valid way around that problem, but it’s still even more evil than the base disease is.

The problem I have with Hydrochloroquine is the potential for side effects, the questionable (to say the least) testing Didier Raoult has done with it and which some use as the basis to hype it, and Didier Raoults history of not exactly adhering to the scientific method in research he oversees (like, the guy got banned from a major publication for a year for cheating). I don’t shit on HCQ because Donnie hypes it, I shit on it because what is used to hype it isn’t up to snuff, and it is a potentially dangerous drug, which can kill. As can not adhering to the scientific method in medical sciences.

Afternoon Lizardim from the cool and clear wild north country. We have 89 new cases out of 1165 new tests, up to 1154 and 30,753; 5 new deaths, up to 39. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has extended our stay-at-home order to May 4; he is discussing changes to slowly and safely introduce aspects of “life as normal” so as to try to relieve the extreme stress on us. 78% of Minnesotans work in essential companies, so this is understandable. He stated that Minnesota is showing clear signs of “flattening the curve”, sustaining a doubling rate of 8 days for the last 3 weeks, but stressed that this is a long fight and we can’t relax our guard. He has been in active talks with religious leaders about how to safely hold some holiday services (which I mentioned here, concerning my church, we are implementing), and is urging people to stay away from family gatherings, despite the traditions associated with Easter. It’s clear that he is doing his utmost to take good care of us and is listening to people with good data and sound science, and I couldn’t be more proud. How go things among the lizardfolk on this spring-like afternoon?

So, I was talking with a conservative acquaintance last night and we discussed Trump’s response to the pandemic. They’re in Washington state, within driving distance of Seattle, aka Ground Zero.

This person is a former law enforcement officer, and overall a good person. I’ve only known three LEOs fairly well in life. This person is literally the first I’ve known who wasn’t an open racist, and actually condemns racism.

At some point in the conversation, they identified as conservative, with a particular fear and disgust of socialism (more on that in a bit.) I did not hold back on my absolute anger towards Trump; the scramble in NJ for refrigerator trucks to warehouse bodies had been upsetting me all day and it finally got the better of me.

I vented about how Cheetolini completely fucked everything up; about how this is the second time in nine years that Republicans have essentially told NJ to fuck off and die (the first being the heel dragging over Hurricane Sandy relief); and my general anger with Magic Balance Fairy worship in the US.

It was fascinating. At no point did this person try to defend the bastard, but they kept circling back to two points:

• The states need to do more to help
• “Everyone” is to blame for dropping the ball

Pointing out shit like “What’s the point of FEMA if they’re going to refuse to help” and “He literally knew about it in January and did nothing”, while not dismissed outright, was countered with the same tired “We all need to pitch in” and “It’s not just Trump who knew and didn’t act.”

Nothing got heated or shouty or anything, but goddamn; anyone expecting conservatives to do the right thing in November are deluding themselves. This person just was not having blaming Trump for, for lack of a better term, more than his “fair share”.

This monster’s negligence is literally going to kill tens of thousands of Americans and, my acquaintance did not even come close to “Yeah, he’s the goddamn leader. The buck stop with him.” It’s like a circuit breaker goes off in their heads and prevents them from being openly honest about how fucked up Trump and the party is.

Others here have pointed out signs that Trump will go down in November. I’m going to try to do my part and hope they’re right. But, goddamn; the man is the walking antithesis of everything that the GOP has claimed to stand for in my lifetime, and they.

Just.

Will.

Not.

Admit it.

About that socialism thing: this person started lamenting how awful the US health care system can be. I pointed out that the problem is they have to keep the shareholders happy, hoping that my subtle hint that a for-profit healthcare system has proven to be an utter failure.

Don’t think it registered at all.

I’ve been writing poems almost daily to keep myself sane during this. Here’s today’s piece:

Frozen in time

These are strange days
as the world stands still.
And we watch from our perch
in the grass on the hill.

The streets sit nearly empty,
the car horns are gone.
Sidewalks stand barren,
no rush hour throng.

The schools, all closed up,
Football fields sit quiet.
Empty seats at the beer hall.
Local theaters stay silent.

Movie cameras aren’t rolling.
Concert grounds sit unused.
Everyone’s staying home,
a bit scared and confused.

So here I am all alone,
keeping distance from friends.
Wondering exactly
When this madness will end.

Republicans vote the way they do because the GOP appeals to their irrational resentments. Since this is not a rational position, it is impossible to reason them out of supporting Trump/GOP.

The path to a D victory in 2020 does not rely on converting even a single Republican. It relies on turning out the D base (and, unfortunately, on the mushy middle in the purple states).

Today’s update sees 95 new cases - I shudder to think what we would be at locally without three weeks of social distancing at this point - and 3 new deaths.

Twitter has completely exhausted my patience for political takes today because I follow a reasonable number of younger, liberal folks (mostly for not-political reasons) and the amount of bullshit I’m seeing is a lot.

I’m so tired of rage being the main way we have to interact with everything political.

Trump will get about 46% of the vote, as before. If the anti-Trump vote doesn’t splinter more than normal, Trump loses.

re: #226 Teukka

I’m aware of Hanlon’s Razor, but there are edge cases, e.g. where people are so exceedingly stupid that they will try to intentionally to cause shit…

At some point, I end up leaning more toward a variation on Clarke’s law: “At a certain point, the results of sufficient incompetence are virtually indistinguishable from malice”. In other words, once enough harm is done, it doesn’t matter if something is done out of genuine incompetence or ignorance, or is actively malicious, it should be TREATED as actively malicious because of just how negative and harmful the results are.

From medlineplus.gov

Why is this medication prescribed?
Chloroquine phosphate is in a class of drugs called antimalarials and amebicides. It is used to prevent and treat malaria. It is also used to treat amebiasis.

This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information

everyone is NOT to blame. states dont liaise with nih, who, the UN, foreign countries, the military, on and on or get that kind of regular global intelligence.

2. The Christianist reactionaries. They vote in opposition to pretty much anything modern.

Resentment is a unifying principle for these three groups. E.g.,

For Group 1, they resent having to pay taxes at a level a modern state needs to function.

For Group 2, they resent the ongoing displacement of christian values as unwritten US law.

For Group 3, they resent all civil rights progress for women and minorities.

IT’S A SACRIFICE FOR GOD AND FREEDOM!!!

“If they die … they die.”

Yes, a now-infamous Louisiana pastor got all “Rocky IV” on us … saying, if any of his church members die from the virus, they’ll have done so in the name of God and freedom.

Tony Spell, leader of Life Tabernacle Church in Baton Rouge, tells TMZ … he thinks true Christians do not mind dying from COVID-19. He insists that what they fear instead is living in fear. As he puts it, “People that can prefer tyranny over freedom do not deserve freedom.”

He’s also not flinching at medical experts suggesting most of the nation will eventually contract the virus, even if only mildly. Spell’s reaction is, “Let’s get on with life.”

Human sacrifice eh? So, if that’s how he wants it, he should volunteer to be first:

Scott was Lt Gov to the previous governor (Shumlin who is a Democrat - independent elections). Bright side is, the term is only two years, so Scott will be on the ballot in November. The current Lt Gov (a member of the Vermont Progressive Party) is running against him.

I don’t know enough about Vermont politics to have any idea what any of it means.

Meanwhile, the Law of Unintended Consequences applies to a Massachusetts Senate vacancy, should Warren create one.

When Ted Kennedy was dying, he pushed state lawmakers to change a 2004 law that required a special election for a vacancy. It was passed back then to keep Mitt Romney from filling a vacancy. But in 2009, Kennedy wanted Deval Patrick to be able to appoint a replacement right away if a 60th vote for healthcare reform was needed.

Made sense then - but of course now it’s a Republican governor in the state house again.

(How weird is it that every single person I’ve mentioned here except Charlie Baker has been a presidential candidate?)

I could never be in the White House press corps, because no matter which party was in charge, I’d get caught on a mic in the press pool saying “bullllllshhhiiiiiiittttt” way too often.

I couldn’t do it because:

A. I’d get arrested
B. My shoes cost way too much to just throw like that

Well, this strikes me as a Not Good Economic Sign:

Cargo numbers were down significantly in March at both the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach as the ongoing coronavirus pandemic impacts all sectors of the economy.

There was a 30.9% decrease in cargo moves at Los Angeles compared to March 2019, the port said on Wednesday, April 8. Long Beach cargo was down 6.4 %, according to data it released Tuesday.

When I was Barky’s age, a lot of my generation declared that it didn’t matter if Dubya got a second term, that Kerry was “just as bad” and it wasn’t like things could get that bad in 4 years.

5 years later, UE had peaked at levels not seen since the 80s, jobs were as scarce as hen’s teeth, and a lot of those “both sides are bad” assholes were flipping burgers while bitching about student loan payments.

I’m not surprised by this story. I’ve witnessed people driving like complete dicks because the highways are so empty.

There have been 24 fatal crashes in Minnesota from March 16, when Walz’s initial imposition on commerce took effect, through Tuesday, according to the state Office of Traffic Safety.

For the same time period last year, the fatal crash total was 12, while that number was 13 in 2018 and 16 in 2017.

State Patrol Lt. Gordon Shank said last week that troopers were noticing a surge in motorists going too fast all around the state as highways are seeing far less traffic than before Walz’s order.

I suspect that one of the things we are going to learn from this incident is that most businesses run similar to most people living paycheck to paycheck… call it running billing cycle to billing cycle. There just aren’t many businesses, it seems, with deep cash reserves that would allow them to operate if revenue dried up for even a month.

For the record, I think it’s pretty fucked up that they didn’t have the decency to notify their employees that their insurance was being dropped. But I’m not surprised that a lot of businesses aren’t going to be able to pay employees if they are completely shut down.

To be blunt, large sectors of the economy really will die if there is no revenue for months.

That’s no justification for Trump’s nonsense about opening things back up, of course, but it is a fact of life.

FYI, I am about to push the button on a PPP SBA loan with the help of my local bank.

Our little S Corp has 1.25 FTE employees (relatives) and getting 2.5 months of their payroll costs will be a BIG help in getting a little disc golf pro shop through this.

Thank goodness we also fully implemented a Shopify online store last winter!

Friends with a family business representing performing artists have already received a helpful $10k grant.

So best Passover wishes to all Jewish (and non-Jewish: Passover is that way) Lizards: my suggestions prompted our observent cousin (-in-law) to arrange a Virtual Seder online (Zoom). Thankfully, I managed (via a prior Zoom setup) to get my camera working, so at least some of the family will be able to Seder it up, plagues notwithstanding. Which of course, is what Pesach should be about…

Though minus Mrs. Jay, who I was only able to retrieve from the hospital this afternoon (after 5 days “inside”) - at least we’ve both been tested and determined to be COVID-free. So “passed over” for the nonce.

Se y’all later.
