I would be very surprised if a stay was granted; Roberts doesn’t usually go for such nakedly partisan moves, and Barrett isn’t on the Court yet.
Trump’s entire career has been funded by other people’s money, usually obtained through criminal or fraudulent activity. Fraud to dodge estate taxes on Fred’s fortune; self dealing to steal from the investors in his casinos; the Trump University fraud; laundering Russian mob money through real estate deals, grifting from charities, his campaign, and lately the U.S. Government, and selling access to the presidency through his hotels and resorts. His $421 million in personal debt is probably mostly owed to foreign banks, and may well be guaranteed by oligarchs close to Putin. And because he is incapable of accomplishing anything real, hundreds of thousands will die in this pandemic. Its truly the darkest era in American history since WWII; his presidency must be ended in this election.

My sister talks weekly with a friend who has resided in Spain for over 45 years. The friend feels that Trump is a strong, dominant leader, while Biden appears to be a frail elderly man. The Apprentice is what saved Trump - had that show promptly fizzled out and been canceled after one season, Trump would’ve been left floundering and by now would either be in prison on tax evasion or be living in a modest bungalow near Atlantic City, his former real estate empire having been long ago liquidated to pay off his mountain of debts.
The Trump Organization would be remembered as a cautionary tale of hubris and incompetence and his resentful kids would probably have cut him out of their lives, and Melania would’ve either remarried by now or gone back to Slovenia (or elsewhere in Europe).

It’s far too late for the GOP to distance themselves from Trump now - it’s practically October and a wee bit over a month to go before the elections. If the GOP leadership issued the “abandon ship, it’s every man for himself” call now, it’d all end in a GOP rout as the Trumpian base punishes the party for abandoning the President.

A legal organization representing Andrew Wommack Ministries sued Gov. Jared Polis on Monday in an effort to halt Colorado’s COVID-19 public health orders that limit the size of religious and other gatherings ahead of a conference the Woodland Park ministry is holding next week.
The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Denver, asks for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against multiple public health orders issued by state officials during the coronavirus pandemic.
The suit comes a week before the ministry’s Pastor’s Conference, which is scheduled to start Oct. 5. The event draws pastors and ministers from outside the local community and is required attendance for more than 600 students at Charis Bible College, according to the legal complaint.

The suit takes a sideswipe at the George Floyd protests without directly naming them, instead lying about “non-existent” social distancing and failing to mention those protests are outside, rather than in a church.
Liberty Counsel also argues the meeting is necessary for continuing education for pastors, who will come from all over the country.
The town the church is in, Woodland Park, is a few miles west of Colorado Springs in Wingnuttia (Teller County).
The town would be overwhelmed with Christian covidiots, and would spill over into Colorado Springs (which is also full of Christian covidiots and libertarian covidiots, along with Focus on the Family).

Looking at real estate to get a feel for what is going on as we approach the election, the trend started in the pandemic continues, with housing supply way down.
However, that the supply is way down keeps the price up.
So even in difficult times for many people, housing costs are not getting cheaper. Housing is getting more expensive (though more slowly than at some other recent times.)
We are in a deeper pickle than I think many are willing to believe. Simply, that the wealth distribution is affecting now how we segment our society, that home ownership is going to be even more difficult the average worker, and that the very wealthy will increase their relative (to the average worker) ability to control land in this country.
And the Federal Reserve is helping this along, because they can’t afford to let real estate crash, because if that happens then the banks become insolvant, holding debt whose face value will be much greater than the ability of the American customer to pay.
This kind of long-term social transition is the next step to destroying the “middle class”. Making home ownership impossible for the majority is a sure way to perpetuate a serfdom.
Here’s the San Diego county summary for August real estate:
Image: SDAR-report-Aug2020.jpg
Inventory is down to just a bit over a month’s supply, median and average prices are way up.
Yes, one can expect that after the election, and perhaps after the introduction of a vaccine, that the housing market will be flooded. But I suspect the real estate sales business is going to try and limit that, to prop up the price.
Bankrupt gunmaker Remington Outdoor will split up its business and sell the pieces to seven different buyers following a bankruptcy auction, court records show. The biggest sale will go to Minnesota-based Vista Outdoor, which said it will pay $81.4 million for Remington’s brand and trademarks along with parts of its ammo and accessories business including an Arkansas ammunition factory.
Other buyers include outdoor-gear retailer Sportsman’s Warehouse, which will acquire the Tapco brand of gun parts and accessories, and Nevada-based gunmaker Franklin Armory, which is snapping up Remington’s Bushmaster rifle brand, records show.
The sales are expected to bring in at least $155 million that will be applied to Remington’s debts, The Wall Street Journal reported. The company filed for bankruptcy in July as it struggled with weak sales after a 2018 restructuring that slimmed down its hefty debt load.
It’s unclear how the proposed sales will affect a lawsuit Remington is facing over its marketing of the Bushmaster rifle, which was used in the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, according to the Journal.

“This is disgusting, it’s illegal and somebody needs to get to the bottom of why the IRS is weaponizing their power to go against their political opponent,” [former acting director of national intelligence] Grenell told host Sean Spicer, noting the fact the Times did not publish the actual tax forms to protect its source signals it is a government insider seeking to take down the president.
Be funny if the New York Times found an odd loophole that let them sue newsmax in Thailand.
The other spin at newsmax according to Dick Morris is that Trump overpaid taxes in previous years and that is why he only paid $750 in that particular year.
Trump Didn’t Avoid Taxes, He Prepaid Them
“In 2016 and 2017, he requested and got an extension to file his returns.
As required, he made an estimated tax payment of $1 million in 2016 and $4.2 million in 2017. Then, it turned out that he did not owe that much in taxes, but, rather than demand the money back, he let the IRS keep it and apply it to any future tax he owed.
So — when he only paid $750 in taxes for the first two years of his presidency it was because he had already overpaid during the two previous years and just reduced his payment by that amount.
Over the longer term, Trump overpaid his taxes by $72 million.”
I wonder how Dickie Morris knows this and why Trump just does not release his taxes to make it clear…
Oh, I know why.
re: #82 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
The NYT article covered that “overpaid by $72 million” line in detail, noting that this is the subject of the IRS’s audit that is still in process. So in fact, nobody knows if he actually overpaid by $72 million or not, and the preponderance of evidence, to this layperson, seems to indicate that like everything else he says or does, it’s a burning bag of shit.

This isn’t very popular, but I believe there should be a cap on personal wealth. 50 million is a fair number. After that, all the money needs to go back into the business, to the employees. From the lowest paid first, and move up from there. Any other money not needed to run the business should be put into actual pensions. If you can’t live a life well on 50 million bucks, your problem ain’t a lack of money.

It’s not a terrible idea, but I’m more in favor of mandating a hard cap on income inequity (and not just from salary - including options, dividends, retirement, insurance - anything that counts as “income” that has to be reported to the IRS). The difference between the lowest-paid employee and the highest-paid should not be vastly different; you can’t tell me that an executive’s expertise is 50 times more valuable than an engineer’s. While I understand that people don’t want to pay “menial jobs” an engineer’s salary, as that potentially devalues the highly specialized engineers, I’m sure there’s a variant on this concept that smarter minds could come up with that would work.
The notion that wealthy just worked harder is utterly facile. So you’re telling me that the CEO making 300 times the lowest level of employee put in 300 times more effort? Please, STFU and STFD. It’s aggressive ignorance.

McKay Coppins, writing for the Atlantic, has a rather short story about Trump’s general contempt for the religious people who support him. Much of it is in this thread.

The whole thing is disgusting, but, frankly, I’m rather glad that Evangelicals have gone almost all in on Trump, because it shows how completely vacuous and power-hungry that bunch are, to the point where they’d set their own movement on fire.
I don’t think a wealth or earnings cap is a good idea - though putting a ceiling on executive pay as a function of minimum pay in a business is worth looking at.
But I have no problem with setting marginal rates over $50M at 49.9%, killing most deductions, and an actual wealth tax of a few (low single digits) percent to drain entrenched wealth back into the economy.
Cautious optimism
Iowa and Ohio join Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Maine’s 2nd CD in Toss Up. That leaves just one state, Texas, in Lean Republican. Biden is in the enviable position of not having to win any of those states to get to 270, while Trump has to win all of them, plus another two states (22 Electoral votes) to win the Electoral College.”

I’m not entirely sure how to implement a system where the rich are forced to put a bunch of unused money back into the economy other than making meaningful inflation or a cap on accumulated wealth. At a high enough level, money just makes money by existing, which will end up creating a class of people with too much power.

I’d be happy to have all the Dems turn over the questioning to Amy Klobuchar and see if she would do the following.
Simply ask the applicant about… every single law that the Trump Administration has broken…
a day on the emoluments clause, what constitutes a violation and bring up specific instances where the 45 Administration has violated it and ask her, in her opinion if this applies
then a day on the Hatch Act - rinse and repeat
We could have her take on the violation on immigration law, campaign finance violations, sexual assault, what constitutes conspiracy, money laundering, RICO, slander, etc
and just cite the violations that he’s publicly admitted to… and allow her to defend him and her nomination and make it obvious to all that she’s either a pawn or if she’s a jurist…
If nothing else, it would remove any illusions and doubts for us all.
since the result is baked in, I think a nice polite respectful review of what’s taken place would be in order… Harris will be on the campaign trail and I believe the Klobuchar would be up to the task.

Bullshit that she’s paying nearly 50% of her income as tax.
The top tax rate has not been above 39.6% since before 1986. That’s the marginal tax rate.
Her effective tax rate is likely to be much lower than that since her income is not all taxed at the top rate, only the amount above the threshold for the top rate. If she makes $1 million, but the threshold is at $500,000, only the last $500,000 is taxed at 39.6%. Everything else is taxed at the lower rates. She’s lying even now.
And if her income included cap gains, then the long term gains were taxed at 15%.
Even when she’s trying to make a point about Trump’s tax scam, she’s lying by exaggeration.
Only way she’s getting close to 50% is if she’s factoring in state and local income taxes too, and even then, it mirrors the federal tax in bracket structure - only the amount above the top tier threshold is taxed at the highest rate.

That’s not a plan. That’s a death sentence and will cause even more medically induced bankruptcies at the worst possible time when hospital resources are stretched to the breaking point and compensating them for care is critical to their solvency. ACA addresses this by making sure that people have coverage and funds flow through to the hospitals.
Before the ACA, hospitals were going bankrupt because of indigent care. That slowed thanks to Obamacare.

Then she was like, “Oh, you should have led with that. He’s a dumbass.”
Possible spreader event incoming…
Los Angeles Comic Con says event will go on at LA Convention Center with coronavirus safety measures
Los Angeles Comic-Con is moving forward with a plan for an in-person event in December, making it one of the first Southern California festivals or conventions to attempt to do so since the coronavirus pandemic shut things down in March, organizers announced Sunday.
The convention had previously announced new dates — Dec. 11-13 in place of its usual late October ones — but given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it was unclear whether it would actually happen or, like San Diego Comic-Con, Coachella, and many, many other large events, it would skip this year entirely.
Now, L.A. Comic-Con leaders say they have plans in place for a safe event at the Los Angeles Convention Center; tickets will go on sale Tuesday, Sept. 29.
“Over the past six months, we’ve been struggling with a very important question: “Should we even ATTEMPT to have L.A. Comic Con in 2020?” wrote Chris DeMoulin, the general manager of Los Angeles Comic Con.
“Since March, we’ve been living in some version of a ‘Lockdown/Safer at Home’ world, trying hard to stay safe, hoping and praying for the health and safety of ourselves, our family, friends, neighbors and all of our fellow human beings,” he continued. “We’re wearing masks, keeping socially distant, and remaining thankful for frontline workers, hospital personnel and everyone working hard to make a difference.
“And yet, we all yearn for just a little bit of normality, to reclaim some aspects of our lives pre-COVID.”
The plan announced Sunday came after conversations with fans, and consultations with state, county and city officials, he said
I mean, they are taking a bunch of precautions but holy hell, this is STILL not a good idea right now.

Politico makes the point that Trump is a far better debater than we think. He doesn’t do the word salad that is customary at his rallies. He can be very coherent when he’s focused on defending himself.
My personal comments (with some input from the article)
He controls the stage, and especially in an environment where fact checking is absent, he is free to make any assertion he wishes. The big difference between now and then is that he is president with a real record, but he does excel at the art of distraction. He is a true and effective demagogue and we underestimate him at our peril.
You cannot defeat him by telling the truth, because the lies are often much more palatable to an undecided or persuadable audience. The coal miners who bought his line that he would bring back the industry did not want to hear Hillary’s cogent presentation of switching to a new career to replace their dying jobs.
My brother has for years mocked people as sheeple, when the true sheeple are people like him who buy into the GOP lies and blot out anything that disproves their fantasies of the world. And Trump is a master at promoting lies that appeal to his audience.
In addition to being criminal thugs, the Trumps are just weird.

McKay Coppins, writing for the Atlantic, has a rather short story about Trump’s general contempt for the religious people who support him. Much of it is in this thread.
[Embedded content]
Coppins does not mention on Twitter what he does say at the end of his story, which is that Trump would mock Romney over the sacred undergarments Mormons wear.
The whole thing is disgusting, but, frankly, I’m rather glad that Evangelicals have gone almost all in on Trump, because it shows how completely vacuous and power-hungry that bunch are, to the point where they’d set their own movement on fire.
So what? They don’t care about his contempt. Unlike the wall, he is successfully implementing their dreams of a theocracy and overruling Roe v Wade. He can disparage them all he pleases; they support him wholeheartedly because he is doing their will, regardless of his personal feelings.
re: #151 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.
They wanted to WHAT? What, they think Biden needs to be controlled, that he’s not intelligent enough to demolish Fuckface von Clownstick on his own?
Whether or not they believe it (doubtful) is a moot point: more likely, what they want is for their voter base to believe it.
It’s Trump: smears, lies, insults and personal attacks are what he and his handlers assume (correctly) his “audience” wants to see: Presidential debates as “reality TV” (WWE “smackdown” style): like the NYT exposé has shown: with Trump, the “show”, and its accompanying “ratings”, are the main/only thing he cares about.
However, what’s going to happen when Reality TV meets real Reality has yet to be seen…

re: #99 A Mom Anon
This isn’t very popular, but I believe there should be a cap on personal wealth. 50 million is a fair number. After that, all the money needs to go back into the business, to the employees. From the lowest paid first, and move up from there. Any other money not needed to run the business should be put into actual pensions. If you can’t live a life well on 50 million bucks, your problem ain’t a lack of money.
I have come to the point that I now support a Maximum Wage tied to 80% of the salary of the President. If you can’t make ends meet on $320,000 per year, tighten your belt.
I also support giving the SEC control on corporate executive salaries, tying them to pay for performance and limiting it to no more than 10X the salary of the average corporate employee up to the $320K cap.
It’s also time to restore the Inheritance tax to pre-Reagan levels.
And it’s time to eliminate golden parachutes for corporate pimps.
Well, here’s some unfortunate news: turns out that while widespread concerns over the accuracy of mail-in voting are probably enormously over-hyped: the system is - like most human-designed-and-operated things - prone to errors: absentee-ballot voters in Brooklyn have been “deluged” with erroneous ballots. (NYT)
The problems seem, basically, to be:
1) the addresses: many voters have been getting ballots addressed to the wrong person. (wrong-voter ballots are immediately invalidated)
2) the source of the problem has been traced to the vendor - a printing plant in Rochester (supposed a regular contractor, “no comment”: on the errors this time round)
3) the Brooklyn Board Of Elections has been so swamped with questions/complaints that they seem to have been paralyzed.
4) time is VERY short to get these issues corrected.
I had a momentary panic when I recall already mailing off Mrs. Jay’s ballot last week, but I do recall that her name was correct on all the correspondence, so I feel better. For now.

Brooklyn NY has more than 2 million residents. By itself, it’s larger than 14 states. There’s an enormous strain on resources to get this right. It’s the same reason that there were also long lines in 2018 and 2016 elections - high turnout and inadequate polling places.

Trump is in a money disappearing business - which makes sense if you view his golf businesses as a money laundering effort. He loans himself money, claims to spend all that money on something, and claims the asset is worth all the money he spent. But when you match up the loan to the asset, there’s no way that it covers what was done (if anything was done at all).
It’s all a sham. It’s money laundering and financial crimes.
Tax fraud is the least of his worries - and Trumpworld needs to worry about prosecution by foreign countries too…
Trading in any asset whose value is largely intangible, subjective and not necessarily inherent (anything from art to antiques to racehorses to real estate) leave a lot of fudge room for money laundering as well.

Yes, like his hyperventilating over “voter fraud” in Paterson NJ in their primary in (?)April* - local election, local problems, and no evidence of “fraud” per se, but Trump hyped it up like it was something Boss Tweed had connived.
*Can’t recall the exact details, but it was a local election (primary?) where something like 30% of mailed-in ballots had to be rejected due to various technical errors (wrong signatures, wrong envelopes, late postmarks, etc.). There is some news this morning that really is worrisome. Thanks to the hellstorm of Trump, tax revelations, the debate tonight, etc, few are noticing Armenia and Azerbaijan are at war. So far not full scale but Turkey may have showdown an Armenian fighter jet and fatalities on both sides. This is as thick as it gets. Turkey backs Azerbaijan. Russia backs Armenia with cordial relations with Azerbaijan as well.
thedrive.com
Adam Schiff posted a statement on Facebook:
Overnight, Azerbaijan launched the largest attack in years on Artsakh, and early reports suggest there have been significant casualties. The United States must urgently work with other members of the Minsk Group to restore peace and prevent any further escalation which will endanger more lives.
This attack comes just months after a serious military exchange with Armenia along the international border. The aggression by Azerbaijan represents the failure of a policy of false equivalence that has looked the other way from Azerbaijan’s bellicose rhetoric and constant attacks. I have introduced legislation that would require U.S. intelligence agencies to assess who initiated this and other skirmishes, a necessary step to hold Azerbaijan accountable.
The legislation he mentions appears to be Sec. 822 of H.R.7856 - Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021. It includes the following:
(2) A description of all significant uses of force in and around the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan during calendar year 2020, including a description of each significant use of force and an assessment of who initiated the use of such force.

Here’s the facts. NJ law requires that ballots be returned individually. A bundler can group no more than 3 ballots together. Any ballots in Paterson that were bundled are suspect and were caught by the election officials. That prevents the kind of voter fraud Trump alleges. Several Paterson officials were charged with voter fraud.
The Passaic County Board of Elections rejected 3,190 ballots, about 19% of the mail-in ballots submitted, for the May 12 election in Paterson, but it is unclear how many were connected to the fraud allegations.
In fact, there are many more common reasons for a ballot to be thrown out, such as a signature that doesn’t match election records or if the ballot was received after the deadline.
