Lyrics (English Translation)
We’ve run for so long
Always taking detours
Now we’ve arrived

We can’t pretend we’re deaf anymore
The signs are way too obvious
We rise

They used to be judged as savages
Some thought we had turned the page
But the First Nations were wise
We now realize their heritage
After our wreckage we apply their bandages
To heal with foliage and with living food (raw-fresh)
Respect our surroundings and remember we’re together
We come back to nature
From our hair to our products
Essential oils
Became our friends
We recycle, we support green parties
We share health infos on social media
We exchange cow milk with breastmilk
We know when to stand up and when to avoid battles

We rise
We rise yeah
We rise

Stress our enemy
Is losing its incredible power
Battling against meditation and its magic
More people practice yoga, qi gong or tai chi
Hopes of a better life are flooding the spirits
We heal when got faith but mostly when we act
When we replace Nutella with vegetables and fruits
We put health, family and friends first
We prefer real company to that of the wifi
But we stay connected, affected
By the joys and pains from afar and the ones near by
Internet and travels break prejudices
We realize we are all on the same side

We rise
We rise yeah
We rise

We come back to our roots
Finally proud of our origins
We include new colors on the pictures
In superhero mode
Women don’t bend the spine anymore
They rather put misogynists K.O
And the popo can’t spill ink anymore
Cause the brothers finally got tired of
Letting them feed a hungry genocide
We ain’t here to ask anymore
We ain’t got chains anymore
We are free in our countries, we are free in our minds
It is not only in movies that we steal the show
Everyday day we create some Marielles Ninas and Malcolms
The pyramid is falling, we’re changing the game

We rise
We rise yeah
We rise

And so with love
We finish the race
Now we’ve arrived

Yes, the day has come
It is the end of the countdown
We rise

We rise
(From the north to the south
From east to west
No denying, the heavenly ways
Are manifesting)

We’re rising
(We feel it all around us
Conscious elevation is reaching from everywhere)

We rise
(From the tiny to the huge
From the mineral to the animal
For the terrestrial to the astral)

On the issue of genocide trials:

ICE is Using Torture Against Cameroonian Immigrants to Coerce Deportation, According to New Complaint Filed by Immigrant Rights Groups (Southern Poverty Law Center)

Cameroon American Council, Freedom for Immigrants, Louisiana Advocates for Immigrants in Detention, Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), Detention Watch Network (DWN), Natchez Network, Haitian Bridge Alliance, and Families for Freedom together filed a multi-individual complaint with the Department for Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties (CRCL) and DHS Office of Inspector General (OIG), condemning the agency for deploying excessive force to coerce Cameroonian asylum seekers into signing their own deportation papers.

According to the complaint, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) coerced eight Cameroonian men detained at the privately operated Adams County Correctional Center in Natchez, Mississippi on September 27 and 28. The complaint describes the coercive tactics, including threats of violence and direct physical abuse to obtain submission, forced taking of fingerprints while individuals are in restraint, and the use of pepper spray against those who decline to sign their deportation papers.

“An ICE agent came to see me Sunday, September 27, 2020 to try to get me to sign a deportation document,” reports a Cameroonian asylum seeker, identified as D.F. in the complaint. “I said I didn’t want to sign a deportation order. I said I am afraid to go back to my country. He promised me he would torture me. Monday, September 28, 2020, he came again while I was outside to try to force me to sign, I refused to sign. He pressed my neck into the floor. I said, Please, I can’t breathe.’ I lost my blood circulation. Then they took me inside with my hands at my back where there were no cameras.”

Advocates allege that these acts of abuse are in violation of the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment, which the US has ratified, as well as ICE’s own standards.

Not a genocide offense, but I’m sure what they’re doing falls under crimes against humanity, or some other offense under universal jurisdiction.

Some of the interesting history Channel shows are about food empires in the early 20th century. Harlan Sanders was a gas station owner, after a whole lot of other jobs, and began selling fried chicken from there. There was another gas station owner in the area, who was caught by Sanders painting over his road sign. A gunfight ensued, and the other owner killed one of Sanders’ men. That guy would end up in jail, leaving Sanders as the only gas station in town.

Also, if you read Sanders’ Wikipedia page, he had a short fuse and lost a number of jobs because of it.

The Omaha World-Herald is reporting the death rate from Covid-19 is much higher in Iowa than Nebraska. Epidemiologists and public health officials note that after accounting for the difference of population in the two states, the issue seems to be Iowa’s much older population.

Iowa’s population of 3.1 million is 63% larger than Nebraska’s 1.9 million, so you would expect more deaths there.

But at times, Iowa’s death toll has been running roughly three times higher than Nebraska’s. Overall, Iowa ranks 23rd among the states in per capita deaths, while Nebraska ranks 40th.

And that comes despite the fact that the rates of COVID-19 cases in the two states have not differed significantly. Overall, Iowa ranks eighth among the states in per capita cases, and Nebraska ranks 15th.

In fact, looking at daily cases per 1 million people, the spread of the virus in Nebraska and Iowa has been remarkably similar. Other than a huge spike of cases in Iowa right after college students returned to campuses, the ebb and flow of new cases in the two states has been mostly parallel.

What’s the matter with Iowa? Why COVID-19 deaths east of Missouri River are so much higher

Population density is no longer a factor, either.

The latest case figures also cast much doubt on density: The eight states that as of Sunday had the biggest week-over-week increases in virus cases include some of the nation’s least dense states. In order, they include Montana (ranked 48th in population per square mile), Wyoming (49th), Wisconsin (26th), North Dakota (47th), South Dakota (46th), Alaska (50th), Utah (40th) and Nebraska (43rd). Iowa, which has the 36th-highest density, posted the 16th-highest week-over-week growth.

Hecuba's daughter  Oct 10, 2020 • 7:46:49pm

We had our weekly discussion with our Texas brother today. My sister mentioned a couple potentially controversial issues but the only one that elicited any feedback was about Trump and masks. Our brother talked — not about Trump — but about how everywhere he travels in Texas, people are wearing masks. Even in places that don’t have mandates, everyone is following the recommendations. I tried to bring up a couple situations where there were disagreements, and he dismissed them as minor. He and his wife (and their dogs) just returned from a road trip to visit her daughter’s family in Michigan, and everywhere they stopped, people were wearing masks in stores. So maybe more of the population is sensible when it comes to precautions — even those who are ardent Trumpsters like my brother and his wife.

From everything I hear, if you guys have snow that actually accumulates, your whole state shuts down. We have an entire squadron of snowplows dedicated to keeping the runway at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport cleared in the winter. They run all 8 of them abreast, the runway cleared in a single pass, and then the plane departs while the trucks reset for the next plane.

The first year that I was in Minnesota, the winter was fairly hard, with a large amount of snow (Mrs. Fish had to pull me out of my impromptu outdoor parking spot) and extreme low temperatures (I definitely recorded multiple days near -40 degrees F/C). It was a harsh reminder of the environment into which I had willingly injected myself.

Denver 9’s own story on the shooting. It was their security guard who shot the Trumpster.

1 dead, security guard in custody after shooting near dueling Denver rallies

A private security guard is being held as a suspect in a deadly shooting near the Denver Art Museum, according to the Denver Police Department (DPD).

The private security guard was contracted through Pinkerton by 9NEWS. It has been the practice of 9NEWS for a number of months to hire private security to accompany staff at protests.

DPD originally took two people into custody, and later found the second individual, a 9NEWS producer who works in the investigative unit, was not involved in the incident. The producer is no longer in police custody and is not a suspect.

This incident occurred beneath a city police surveillance camera and police confirmed they have footage of what happened.

DPD said that a little before 3:50 p.m. there was some sort of verbal altercation just as protesters were leaving the area.

The shooter was in plain clothes. One possibility is that the Trumpster was making the usual blood-curdling threats against the media and the guard took him at his word, especially after he deployed his bear mace.

The record low in Alabama is -27 degrees F (-33 degrees C), according to Wikipedia, set in 1966.

The record low in Nebraska is -47°F (-43° Commie), set at Camp Clarke (a couple miles west of my county seat) on 12 February, 1899.

The range for the average annual number of days with minimum temperatures of 0° F or lower decreases from about 25 in the north to 10 in the southeast. Extreme minima of -40° F and lower have been recorded at many locations in the west and north. Although winters in Nebraska are classed as cold, there are usually several periods of mild pleasant weather, when thawing occurs. The number and duration of mid-winter mild intervals increases southwestward across the State.

On rare occasions, light freezes have been noted during June, July and August in the panhandle and north-central areas which are subject to extreme cold air drainage on calm, clear nights.

Overwhelmed White Nationalist Militia Spread Way Too Thin Plotting Attacks Against Everyone Trump Wants

WAUSAU, WI—Complaining that it was unrealistic to expect their small, grassroots terror organization to foment civil war on so many fronts at once, overwhelmed members of a local white nationalist militia stated Friday they were stretched to the limit trying to attack everyone the president wants them to. “So, just looking at what President Trump would like from us right now, we’re supposed to kidnap several congresswomen in Washington, run over some protestors in Louisville, and blow up a mosque in Minneapolis—how is it possible for a handful of guys to do all that?”

re: #30 Hecuba’s daughter

Polls have been telling us that large majorities approved of masking — starting a while back, around 70% and growing steadily. And I believe I read that with 80% compliance, we can significantly reduce transmission.

That tracks. I went to college in Indiana, not far from my family’s ancestral home. I, of course, was used to winter weather, snow, freezing temperatures, and whatnot. On the first snow of my freshman year, I was in my dorm room, being studious, saw the snowflakes outside, shrugged, and was like, “Whatever, dude. I’ve got work to do.” I got incredibly distracted by people outside who were captivated by the snowfall. I learned very quickly that some people on my campus were from states that never had snow while these young kids were alive, and this was their first snowfall. What was routine and ordinary - in fact, uneventful - for me, was the first event of a lifetime for these boys.

Living now in Minnesota, I have heard stories of the Great Halloween Blizzard of 1978. My pastor shared a personal story of that disaster, in which a car slid down the hill where he lived, slowly, from the top all the way down to the bottom, while multiple people tried to intervene to no avail. I admit that the 1996 April Fool’s Blizzard is the only great winter weather event in which I have been personally involved.

In my part of California, if we get an inch of snow (happened once, in 1976 — didn’t melt for a couple of hours), things grind to a halt.

It is unlikely that Bone is even aware of Friedman and Buchanan’s revival of the term. Berners and Greens were calling every Democrat who refused to accept the Bernie as their Messiah “neoliberals” without necessarily understanding the term.

The Breonna Taylor tragedy was chillingly reminiscent of an old L&O episode that involved bounty hunters, not police, tracking a criminal who jumped bail. (In this episode there was no racial component) . The bounty hunters ended up killing 3 innocent people. They broke into an apartment where the criminal was hiding out and started firing because one thought he saw a weapon. And despite the efforts of our favorite assistant DA to prosecute them, they skated because a judge ruled that their actions did not violate the law.

He is, but I was really responding to her. Wingnut orthodoxy requires its followers to believe two contradictory “facts”: All liberals hate guns with a firey passion and that liberals want to use armed men to “oppress” those they oppose. Usually they circle the square by declaring that the latter is the exception to the former because the “truth” is liberals want to impose a police state.

I read the novel years ago and I’ve watched the ‘94 miniseries a few times, so I’m not gonna sit here and argue that the story is top-notch and worth retelling. And yeah, the post-apoc genre has been done to death since ‘94, so this isn’t really bringing anything new to the table. At the same time, I did enjoy the story for the most part…provided you ignore that whole ginormous ass-pull to solve the whole “puny mortals versus the Anti-Christ/Satan” bit. So I’m in a “wait and see” mood right now. The acting was what made the ‘94 version worthwhile, so let’s see what we get this go-around.

Learn the hard way. This is the guy in Lubbock who sold mass shooter Seth Ator the AR-15 he used to kill 7 people in Odessa.
He sold an AR-15-style rifle to a mass shooter. Now he wants universal background checks

For years, Marcus Braziel took his customers at their word when they showed up with wads of cash to buy one of the customized AR-15-style rifles he advertised for sale on the internet.

If they said there was no legal reason to prevent them from owning a gun, Braziel said, that was good enough for him. He saw no need for obtaining a license and conducting formal criminal background checks.
But that was before federal agents showed up at his door in Lubbock, Texas, and told him they’d traced one of his weapons to a mass shooter.
“I wanted to vomit,” Braziel recalled in an exclusive interview with CNN. “My life has not been the same since. I will be forever sorry.”
Braziel, 45, pleaded guilty Wednesday in US District Court in Lubbock to felony charges of dealing and manufacturing firearms without a license and filing a false tax return that failed to report income from his gun sales. He faces up to five years in federal prison under a plea deal with prosecutors.

The pandemic will never officially end. It will just remain a slow-rolling horror until the announcement of a vaccine sometime next year, at which time people will act as though things are “solved” and resolve to return to “normal” at any even greater pace. You watch, by next Memorial Day, most states will have ended face mask and social distancing requirements because “the crisis has passed.”

Folks have suggested that Donny will go “scorched earth” if he loses and I think there’s something to it, even if I don’t think he’ll actively work to hurt the country. No, what he’s going to do is basically just shutdown and sign out. Everything he promised “after the election”? He’s going to blame everybody (Dems, Repubs, voters, fraud, etc) for why he’s putting the kibosh on all that. Any legislation brought up will automatically draw veto threats, which will be Mitch’s excuse for refusal to move on anything in the Senate.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Donny just decides he no longer wants to be in DC and preemptively moves back to NYC or sets up shop in Mar-a-lago. If he’s in DC on Inauguration Day, he won’t attend the formal events and will probably be reported as hostile to Biden if ever the two meet. Given how petty he is, he might very well try to drown out the whole thing with pressers and rallies, if only to bitch when the media ignores him.

‘Slow-Blinking’ May Help Humans Bond With Cats, Study Says (Huffington Post)

Details of how the study was conducted in the article.

A new study about cat-human communication has provided scientific evidence of what many cat lovers already suspected: “Slow-blinking” may help people bond with their feline companions.

“Our results suggest that slow-blink sequences may function as a form of positive emotional communication between cats and humans,” wrote scientists from the United Kingdom’s University of Sussex and University of Portsmouth in the study, published in the journal Scientific Reports on Monday.

Slow-blinking means making eye contact with a cat and then slowly closing and opening your eyes. Cat behavior experts have long suggested that a cat slow-blinking at a human is a sign of trust and comfort.

The tax complaint is really interesting to me…

I’ve been trying to figure out if, once you factor in all taxes (federal income, state income, fuel tax, property tax, sales tax), if there really is much of a different in tax burden regardless of where you live in the country?

So far, the difference seems to be a couple percentage points from state to state. Anyone know if my super simple research is actually right?

Wallet Hub did something like that and found the range for property, income, and sales tax ranges from 12% to 5%. NY is at the top, DE and AK at the bottom. Average is 8.5%, with PA ranked 25th. NY has average property tax, but is highest with income tax and above average sales tax. FL has no income tax, so they’re super reliant on property tax (which means you see the taxes come out when you pay mortgages).

More good news:

President Trump stopped all of his television and radio advertising in three states and substantially reduced it in four others in recent weeks after his lackluster fundraising left him unable to match a surge in spending by his Democratic challenger, Joe Biden.

Trump’s retreat from Ohio, Iowa and New Hampshire reflects his struggle to change the dynamics of a race that polls suggest he is on track to lose. In the six weeks since his party’s national convention, Trump’s campaign has yanked more than $17 million in ads he’d previously booked in those states.

Two of them, Ohio and Iowa, are must-wins for the Republican president. Polls show him running almost dead even with the former vice president in both. Trump’s withdrawal of advertising in those states — despite the risk — is a sign of his campaign’s poor financial condition.

“It seems the Trump campaign has reached the point where they have to do some triage,” said Travis Ridout, co-director of the Wesleyan Media Project, which tracks political ads. “They don’t seem to have enough money to run ads everywhere.”

Isn’t this something like the third or fourth week running that the Trump campaign has had to pull ads from crucial swing states?

Feral conservative arsonists.

Cause of blaze that destroyed Biden-Harris hay bales probed in Dalton (The Berkshire Eagle, PIttsfield, Mass., more at the link, with photos of the burning hay bales):

DALTON — A novel endorsement of the Biden/Harris presidential ticket went up in flames Friday night in Dalton, halting traffic on Route 9 and prompting an investigation into whether the fire was deliberately set.

A little after 6:30 p.m., a stack of 19 oversized and wrapped hay bales bearing the Democratic Party candidates’ names caught fire, sending smoke across the busy state road near Holiday Brook Farm.

Dicken Crane, the farm’s owner, said Dalton police and fire officials were at the farm Friday night, investigating.

Crane said he was running a tractor in a nearby field, baling hay. On one pass, the massive bales with the political message — stacked three high in places — were fine.

“When I turned around again, it was ablaze,” he said.

A 911 call at 6:40 p.m. summoned local firefighters.

Crane said that just minutes before, at 6:32 p.m., a farm employee noticed that a substance that resembled motor oil had been spread across a portion of the bales.

It remains unclear what ignited the fire, which consumed portions of the bales, each one worth $65.

“The assumption is that this was very deliberate,” Crane said. “But it’s hard to explain. Six minutes later it was on fire, but there was nobody there.”

Once the fire was extinguished, Crane inspected the debris and found that hay still inside the bales was cool to the touch. “It was not spontaneous combustion,” he said, a reference to fires that start naturally, including in silage.

DALTON, Mass. —

A Massachusetts man is facing an arson charge after he allegedly burned down a hay bale display that was made in support of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris.

I will repeat my rant that nearly anyone can buy a gun, and if you want to use it to defend your home and family, then I guess that it is your good right.

But to use one in a public place, especially during an active shooter situation, requires years of training and experience, excellent situational awareness and nerves of steel.

Russia confirmed 13,634 new coronavirus cases Sunday, setting a record for new infections as authorities at the epicenter of the outbreak consider new restrictions to slow the spread of the disease.

Russia, which has the world’s fourth-highest number of infections at 1,298,718 cases, has seen its daily caseload double over the past month.

According to the tally compiled by the national coronavirus information center, a total of 22,579 Russians have died, with 149 fatalities confirmed Sunday. Monthly data published by Russia’s statistics agency suggests that the real number of fatalities is at least double that figure.

Moscow, the epicenter of Russia’s Covid-19 outbreak with 4,501 new cases, has seen a 53% rise in new infections over the past week.

Reports citing unnamed sources suggest that Moscow City Hall is considering closing night clubs, pubs and karaoke clubs to slow the spread of the virus.

I thought Russia had a vaccine….oh wait, what’s that? It was probably just bullshit? Yeah, quelle fucking surprise.

Brexit: Anger as ministers use obscure rule to deny MPs a vote on blocking chlorinated chicken imports

An obscure rule is to be used to deny MPs a crucial vote aimed at blocking imports of chlorinated chicken and hormone-fed beef, sparking fresh fears about food quality after Brexit.

Ministers are facing fierce criticism over their tactic to defeat an attempt to give powers to a new watchdog - amid suspicions that future trade deals, particularly with the US, will water down food and animal welfare standards.

The move to prevent debate on a key amendment expected to be backed by Tory rebels in a Commons showdown on Monday has been condemned as “unbelievable” by the peer who introduced it in the Lords.

Polls have been telling us that large majorities approved of masking — starting a while back, around 70% and growing steadily. And I believe I read that with 80% compliance, we can significantly reduce transmission.

We’ve had rain and wind but most of it has disappeared. More rain today but clearing out tonight. So Mother Nature is no help here.

Edited to add: wonder why this event isn’t on local news sites? That’s just weird for here. Also, my husband had insisted the owners of this venue were not political. Sure honey…..the place is a “luxury gun club”. Bar/Restaurant, indoor and outdoor ranges, gun store and gunsmithing services, you can rent space for events, etc. They are having a 50 percent off sale on the most expensive membership packages, the priciest one is 2500 a year. It’s located close to the private airport, where the rich folks fly in and out, after residents of a local subdivision didn’t want it directly across the street. The land had already been cleared, about 40 acres of trees. All that’s there is a bank branch surrounded by dirt.

In the current Scientific American magazine there is a doctor that was involved with the early stages of HIV research (along with Dr. Fauci). If you don’t have a subscription you prob can’t get the article online. But he lays out some dire possibilities about the current outlook for a vaccine. He is more of a believer that COVID-19 will need to have a powerful treatment for the disease rather than depending on a vaccine, just as had to be done for HIV.

An editorial just went up at Scientific American.

On November 3, Vote to End Attacks on Science

Choosing Donald Trump for president is choosing fiction over fact—a fatal mistake

Instead of thinking about whether to vote Democratic or Republican in the upcoming U.S. election, think about voting to protect science instead of destroying it.

As president, Donald Trump’s abuse of science has been wanton and dangerous. It has also been well documented. Since the November 2016 election, Columbia Law School has maintained a Silencing Science Tracker that records the Trump Administration’s attempts to restrict or prohibit scientific research, to undermine science education or discussion, or to obstruct the publication or use of scientific information. By early October, the tracker had detailed more than 450 cases, including scientific bias and misrepresentation (123 instances), budget cuts (72), government censorship (145), interference with education (46), personnel changes (61), research hindrances (43) and suppression or distortion of information (19).

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) also keeps a tracker of the administration’s attacks on science. It details antiscience rules, regulations and orders; censorship; politicization of grants and funding; restrictions on conference attendance; rollbacks of data collection or data accessibility; sidelining of science advisory committees; and studies that have been halted, edited or suppressed. The fact that so many types of abuse have occurred, and so often that they each warrant their own category, is scary.

Well there was this a few days ago:

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio (WTOV) — New information has been released regarding a crash that took place in Ohio.

St. Clairsville Police identified the passenger in the vehicle as David Saunders, 36, of St. Clairsville. Police say he had been missing since Sunday.

Saunders was found dead after the vehicle he was in drove off the side of I-470 hitting an exit sign.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol told News9 that while the car was overturning, the passenger was ejected from the vehicle.

wchstv.com

Resulting in this:

John Polen appeared for a video arraignment before Western Division Court Judge Eric Costine on Tuesday afternoon.

He’s charged with abuse of a corpse, a felony of the 5th degree.

Polen was the driver in a crash on I-470 in which the passenger, 36-year old David Saunders, was found dead.

But police later learned Saunders was dead hours before the crash.

“On or about September 28th, did accept as authorized by law, treat a human corpse in a way that would outrage reasonable community sensibilities. It is punishable by up to a 12-month prison incarceration, up to a $2,500 fine,” Costine said.

Facebook needs to make profits. They don’t care how they do it.

What they need is regulation. In the cases where they refuse to intervene in things like genocide, that makes them complicit in genocide and they need to be put on trial.

Watch how fast anti-social media companies clean up their acts if some of their board members go to jail for crimes against humanity.

As Twitter noted, they can’t kick off the Nazis because their algorithms can’t tell them from Republican politicians. (That says something about the GOP.) What Twitter won’t do is hire enough people to moderate their anti-social media platform. Hiring people costs money, and never get between a libertarian and his money.

Facebook needs to make profits. They don’t care how they do it.

One simple thing Facebook could do to be good citizens, and it wouldn’t even affect their bottom line, would be to shut down new account creation several months before a US Federal election (every two years, beginning after 4th July say). Chopping away at the troll accounts and bots can be carried out all the way to the election and beyond but if the bot farmers can’t create new accounts then their effects are limited to some extent. Sure, dedicated trolls can bank a bunch of fake accounts before the cutoff but it’s more work for them to keep those accounts alive and “healthy” to avoid bot detection and they’re likely to be targetted anyway during the run-up to voting.

“And we shall never speak of this again” will end up becoming the GOP’s talking point in regard to Trump.

I think what will happen is that Trump will bitch about “massive voter fraud” and launch his 2024 campaign to keep the grift going, and because he has the loyalty of the base and control of most of the GOP, they will have to keep kissing his ass. I hope I’m wrong.

He’s trying to understand where it came from and why she had it.

Free Art History explanation! Today only!
The piece is a parody sculpture based on (as best as can be determined) various 16th-17th Century compositions (both paintings and sculpture) illustrating the myth of Hercules and Antaeus* - and/or Hercules and Diomedes.
The “where it came from”? Actually, this tchotchke is - like so much else, apparently widely available on the Internet
As to the “why”? [Insert “shrug” emoji HERE]

* Antaeus (who lived in North Africa) was the demigod son of the Earth Goddess, and was invincible in wrestling as long as his feet were connected to the earth. He would challenge, wrestle and kill passersby, until Hercules came along and defeated him by lifting Antaeus off the ground and crushing him.

Yeah I think it’s going to be the biggest landslide in my lifetime. I’ll get off your lawn but there’s reason for optimism here.

The only question in my mind is if Barr tries to literally steal the election by something like sending his secret police to sieze uncounted ballots in urban districts in tipping point states to “preserve evidence of voter fraud” and prevent them from being counted. I hope Barr will realize that that only ends with him either dead or in prison, and America hasn’t yet degenerated to the point that Trump can retain power by literally preventing ballots from being counted.

Ideal situation is that the GOP will try to counter Trump this time, realizing that he is a fucking self-centered lunatic whose interests are counter to the GOP, and implode trying, as without the Trump base, they can never command a majority or even a plurality.

Your periodic reminder: the American public has the memory of a gnat.

In 1964, the Democrats won in a landslide, with huge victories across the board. I posted on the door to my dorm room a drawing of a headstone with the epitaph: RIP GOP. In 4 years, Nixon became president. The political landscape can change overnight. No one in 2019 foresaw a pandemic raging across the nation in 2020; we cannot predict what is likely strike us in the next 4 years.

It would be fabulous for the GOP to vanish from the face of the earth, but unfortunately that’s not happening. We just have to hope the Biden and Democratic victory is so overwhelming that the trajectory of our nation’s politics can be sufficiently altered to provide a better life for Americans.

The president is likely toast’: Trump’s woes raise GOP fears of a blue wave

“The president has had possibly the worst two-week stretch that a candidate could have going into the final month of an election,” one Republican strategist said.

A series of setbacks for President Donald Trump has left some Republican operatives and donors fearing that the race for the White House is slipping away and proposing that the party shift focus to protecting seats in Congress.

Vulnerable GOP candidates are currently tethered to an unpopular president, fighting for survival against a potential blue wave after Trump’s widely panned performance in the first debate, his coronavirus diagnosis and his erratic behavior on economic stimulus talks.

Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s lead over Trump has topped 10 points in the NBC News national polling average. Across the country, Trump is hemorrhaging support among seniors and faces widespread defections among white college graduates, particularly women.

“The president has had possibly the worst two-week stretch that a candidate could have going into the final month of an election,” Ken Spain, a Republican strategist, said.

This shows just how impervious his cult base is to facts, logic, or even self-preservation.

Again, not one dollar or breath should be wasted trying to convert the base. They are a write-off. Everything should be focused on getting out the vote and thwarting Republican suppression.

I’d disagree with this assessment: if only for the (abhorrently disgraceful) idea that the GOP’s rush to “reopen the economy” - and reap the political benefits - was a gamble made without any regard for the COVID-19 pandemic whatsoever: that the main Republican “philosophy” in dealing with this deadly disease is to basically ignore it in the scramble to “get back to normal”; fundamentally; “if you get you get it, if you don’t you don’t; you may live, or you may die, but them’s the breaks - open those bars back up!”.

“Today’s GOP is full of messages you’d expect of an abuser and their support system. Victim blaming, and its cousin the myth of meritocracy, say “you got what you deserved”. When conservative pundits blame Trumpism on Obama or the left, it’s pundit-speak for “We only hit you because of what you did”. Gaslighting is ubiquitous, especially a strain that doesn’t really attempt to fool the victim or any neutral third party. This includes risible lies like “no collusion”, but also risible lies like “tax cuts for the rich are revenue-neutral” and “Democrats want to take away your Medicare”. “Democrats are denying Kavanaugh a fair process” was particularly mind-blowing, given how they treated Obama’s Supreme Court Nominee Merrick Garland and rammed Kavanaugh through.”

Minor pedantic peeve:
I’ve noticed that there has been a general media conflation of two different concepts in the “discussions” of “court packing”. One is the sort that the GOP/Mitch McConnell has been doing for years: deliberately creating/maintaining judicial vacancies, then “packing” the courts by pushing through as many nominations of “reliable” hack ideologue RWers as possible (while ignoring or steamrollering any Senate -still less public - opposition).
The other, for which (Joe Biden/Kamala Harris/any Democrat) keep getting pressed at every opportunity to have to formally denounce is “packing” by expanding the size of courts - which new seats would, presumably be filled by “political appointees”; i.e., to most MSM types, Communists.

Obviously nothing. I just meant that the fact Hoover received 40% of the vote doesn’t say anything about how Trump will/should do. The 1932 GOP base bears no resemblance to the 2000 GOP base, except for the wealthy.

re: #325 Hecuba’s daughter

Hoover wasn’t a malignant clown with no public service, who publicly trashed anyone who disagreed with him. He spearheaded the famine relief program to save millions in Russia who would otherwise have died from starvation during the 1921-1923 famine. His biographers credited him with saving more lives than any person who has ever lived.

Oh come the hell on. It was the greatest economic disaster the country had ever faced. I’m not talking about Hoover the man but I’m trying to say that even presidents in dire political situations like Hoover have higher floors than they ought to. And you’re forgetting that Hoover for all the admirable work he did in Russia in the early 20’s showed an indifferent attitude about federal relief following the Stock Market crash.

I think Herbert Hoover’s reputation as the efficient, “get-er-done!” Great Engineer was what finally did him in, politically (President was actually his only elected office). I think the public expected a lot more from him, even if stuff like European famine relief, or the Mississippi Flood relief efforts in 1927 were worlds different from the general collapse of the national(/world) economy in the early 30s. As I recall, though: by 1932, Hoover had come (if somewhat belatedly) to the stark realization that federal action WAS vitally necessary: but that he was continually stymied by other Republicans in his Administration, and a Republican Congress - most of whom assumed the best way to deal with the Great Depression was to just ignore it and let it turn around on its own. Hoover basically responded by withdrawing into his shell: I think you’re right: needing a “higher floor”, Hoover went and hid in the basement.

Much like the pre-civil rights era Democratic Party in the South, the core of the 21st Century GOP is white supremacy, and it took a century after the Civil War for that to change. It is a very difficult trick to abandon your base of support to reach for another. GOP politicians in the Northeast, where GOP moderates have some success winning governorships, will have to lead the way, because they can only succeed by building a more diverse coalition, like the northern Democratic Party in the 20th Century. The Southern GOP won’t change until they can no longer win statewide elections with their white base.

That’s what has hurt the GOP here. They can’t win the diverse areas because the disdain is so obvious. Three of our likely gubernatorial candidates next year will be African Americans including two women. We’ve already broken the racial barrier here but the gender one could be next. Additionally, we might be sending a third African American to Congress too since the Va-5 Republicans didn’t renominate their somewhat sane incumbent because he performed a same sex marriage and isn’t anal about pot as well. Doesn’t hurt that Dr. Cameron Webb is a great candidate as well.

It’s interesting that there has been no Republican attempt to rehabilitate Hoover in recent years. Coolidge and even Harding have been the subject of such revisionism but Hoover, like his successors Landon and Wilkie, is a non-person in current GOP hagiography.

Being so long in the past has nothing to do with it, since FDR is still a major bogeyman to Republicans, with the Birchers especially having an elaborate demonology around him.

Wendell Wilkie is probably my favorite 20th century Republican, even more so than Eisenhower. Eleanor Roosevelt said later that she and FDR admired Wilkie more than they did any other Republican, and more than most other Democrats. After his defeat in the 1940 election, Wilkie offered his services to FDR in the crisis building up to US participation in World War II. FDR accepted, and Wilkie traveled all over the world as a kind of roving ambassador. He wrote a visionary book, One World, on the basis of those experiences. Its theme, international unity, would have present-day Republicans turning purple, foaming at the mouth and rolling on the floor in terminal fits of rage.

One World is a manifesto and a travelogue written by Wendell Willkie, a liberal Republican, about his seven-week, 31,000-mile tour, and originally published in April 1943. It advocates for an end to colonialism, World Federalism, and equality for non-whites in the United States.

One World inspired the One World movement and the World Federalist Movement — which included among its supporters Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru —and advocated strong and democratic super-national institutions. That wave of thinking gave birth to the postwar international order, including the United Nations System, but was also very critical of the postwar order and the UN, claiming it is insufficient to avoid another world war.

Wilkie was the first major party presidential candidate to speak to the NAACP convention, but only after the election. Jim Crow was at its peak and southern Democrats went batshit over it. Conservative Republicans went out of their way to distance themselves and re-assure their segregationist colleagues that Wilkie was old news and the GOP was not going race-mixer on them.

And how Austria having stable, inexpensive, and available medical care positively affect citizens’ mental outlook in a way that is missing in the US.

Snyder has written extensively on the authoritarianism and fascism. He is now on a book tour for his latest book, about health care. It is based upon his experiences under both US and Austrian health care systems. And about his experiences with an undiagnosed burst appendix, that almost killed him.

I was watching it because, although I have baked bread in the kitchen oven and in dutch ovens, I was curious how to cook it with campfire and hiking type gear. Also, bannock seems to be a fairly generic term, being used for yeast based breads, quick breads, and even fried dough. (At least on youtube.)

It appears that basically, the dough is placed in a pan and that placed in a larger pot (aka ‘billy’) which becomes the heated baking chamber. Usually the ‘dough’ pan is placed on some pebbles to keep it from touching the bottom of the ‘billy’.
