On the issue of genocide trials:

ICE is Using Torture Against Cameroonian Immigrants to Coerce Deportation, According to New Complaint Filed by Immigrant Rights Groups (Southern Poverty Law Center)

Cameroon American Council, Freedom for Immigrants, Louisiana Advocates for Immigrants in Detention, Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), Detention Watch Network (DWN), Natchez Network, Haitian Bridge Alliance, and Families for Freedom together filed a multi-individual complaint with the Department for Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties (CRCL) and DHS Office of Inspector General (OIG), condemning the agency for deploying excessive force to coerce Cameroonian asylum seekers into signing their own deportation papers.

According to the complaint, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) coerced eight Cameroonian men detained at the privately operated Adams County Correctional Center in Natchez, Mississippi on September 27 and 28. The complaint describes the coercive tactics, including threats of violence and direct physical abuse to obtain submission, forced taking of fingerprints while individuals are in restraint, and the use of pepper spray against those who decline to sign their deportation papers.

“An ICE agent came to see me Sunday, September 27, 2020 to try to get me to sign a deportation document,” reports a Cameroonian asylum seeker, identified as D.F. in the complaint. “I said I didn’t want to sign a deportation order. I said I am afraid to go back to my country. He promised me he would torture me. Monday, September 28, 2020, he came again while I was outside to try to force me to sign, I refused to sign. He pressed my neck into the floor. I said, Please, I can’t breathe.’ I lost my blood circulation. Then they took me inside with my hands at my back where there were no cameras.”

Advocates allege that these acts of abuse are in violation of the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment, which the US has ratified, as well as ICE’s own standards.

Went for a hike with m’ lady friend today. Gorgeous indian summer day. Only complaint: there was a lot of people out and about. Today most likely was the last really nice warm day in the Colorado Rocky Mountains for some time. It’s supposed to snow up in the mountains and rain in the valleys tomorrow.

Some of the interesting history Channel shows are about food empires in the early 20th century. Harlan Sanders was a gas station owner, after a whole lot of other jobs, and began selling fried chicken from there. There was another gas station owner in the area, who was caught by Sanders painting over his road sign. A gunfight ensued, and the other owner killed one of Sanders’ men. That guy would end up in jail, leaving Sanders as the only gas station in town.

Also, if you read Sanders’ Wikipedia page, he had a short fuse and lost a number of jobs because of it.

Some violations of some treaties fall under universal jurisdiction in order to give them more teeth and thus give incentive to not to violate them.

The Omaha World-Herald is reporting the death rate from Covid-19 is much higher in Iowa than Nebraska. Epidemiologists and public health officials note that after accounting for the difference of population in the two states, the issue seems to be Iowa’s much older population.

Iowa’s population of 3.1 million is 63% larger than Nebraska’s 1.9 million, so you would expect more deaths there.

But at times, Iowa’s death toll has been running roughly three times higher than Nebraska’s. Overall, Iowa ranks 23rd among the states in per capita deaths, while Nebraska ranks 40th.

And that comes despite the fact that the rates of COVID-19 cases in the two states have not differed significantly. Overall, Iowa ranks eighth among the states in per capita cases, and Nebraska ranks 15th.

In fact, looking at daily cases per 1 million people, the spread of the virus in Nebraska and Iowa has been remarkably similar. Other than a huge spike of cases in Iowa right after college students returned to campuses, the ebb and flow of new cases in the two states has been mostly parallel.

What’s the matter with Iowa? Why COVID-19 deaths east of Missouri River are so much higher

Population density is no longer a factor, either.

The latest case figures also cast much doubt on density: The eight states that as of Sunday had the biggest week-over-week increases in virus cases include some of the nation’s least dense states. In order, they include Montana (ranked 48th in population per square mile), Wyoming (49th), Wisconsin (26th), North Dakota (47th), South Dakota (46th), Alaska (50th), Utah (40th) and Nebraska (43rd). Iowa, which has the 36th-highest density, posted the 16th-highest week-over-week growth.

We had our weekly discussion with our Texas brother today. My sister mentioned a couple potentially controversial issues but the only one that elicited any feedback was about Trump and masks. Our brother talked — not about Trump — but about how everywhere he travels in Texas, people are wearing masks. Even in places that don’t have mandates, everyone is following the recommendations. I tried to bring up a couple situations where there were disagreements, and he dismissed them as minor. He and his wife (and their dogs) just returned from a road trip to visit her daughter’s family in Michigan, and everywhere they stopped, people were wearing masks in stores. So maybe more of the population is sensible when it comes to precautions — even those who are ardent Trumpsters like my brother and his wife.

We have an entire squadron of snowplows dedicated to keeping the runway at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport cleared in the winter. They run all 8 of them abreast, the runway cleared in a single pass, and then the plane departs while the trucks reset for the next plane.

I was just checking Wikipedia, which, presumably, only polls the most prominent weather stations in each state. If you went far to the north, undoubtedly North Dakota and northern Minnesota would record temperatures lower than this.

The first year that I was in Minnesota, the winter was fairly hard, with a large amount of snow (Mrs. Fish had to pull me out of my impromptu outdoor parking spot) and extreme low temperatures (I definitely recorded multiple days near -40 degrees F/C). It was a harsh reminder of the environment into which I had willingly injected myself.

Denver 9’s own story on the shooting. It was their security guard who shot the Trumpster.

1 dead, security guard in custody after shooting near dueling Denver rallies

A private security guard is being held as a suspect in a deadly shooting near the Denver Art Museum, according to the Denver Police Department (DPD).

The private security guard was contracted through Pinkerton by 9NEWS. It has been the practice of 9NEWS for a number of months to hire private security to accompany staff at protests.

DPD originally took two people into custody, and later found the second individual, a 9NEWS producer who works in the investigative unit, was not involved in the incident. The producer is no longer in police custody and is not a suspect.

This incident occurred beneath a city police surveillance camera and police confirmed they have footage of what happened.

DPD said that a little before 3:50 p.m. there was some sort of verbal altercation just as protesters were leaving the area.

The shooter was in plain clothes. One possibility is that the Trumpster was making the usual blood-curdling threats against the media and the guard took him at his word, especially after he deployed his bear mace.

Extreme minima of -40° F and lower have been recorded at many locations in the west and north. We had our weekly discussion with our Texas brother today. My sister mentioned a couple potentially controversial issues but the only one that elicited any feedback was about Trump and masks. Our brother talked — not about Trump — but about how everywhere he travels in Texas, people are wearing masks. Even in places that don’t have mandates, everyone is following the recommendations. I tried to bring up a couple situations where there were disagreements, and he dismissed them as minor. He and his wife (and their dogs) just returned from a road trip to visit her daughter’s family in Michigan, and everywhere they stopped, people were wearing masks in stores. So maybe more of the population is sensible when it comes to precautions — even those who are ardent Trumpsters like my brother and his wife.

Polls have been telling us that large majorities approved of masking — starting a while back, around 70% and growing steadily. And I believe I read that with 80% compliance, we can significantly reduce transmission.

That tracks. I went to college in Indiana, not far from my family’s ancestral home. I, of course, was used to winter weather, snow, freezing temperatures, and whatnot. On the first snow of my freshman year, I was in my dorm room, being studious, saw the snowflakes outside, shrugged, and was like, “Whatever, dude. I’ve got work to do.” I got incredibly distracted by people outside who were captivated by the snowfall. I learned very quickly that some people on my campus were from states that never had snow while these young kids were alive, and this was their first snowfall. What was routine and ordinary - in fact, uneventful - for me, was the first event of a lifetime for these boys.

I’ve been trying to figure out if, once you factor in all taxes (federal income, state income, fuel tax, property tax, sales tax), if there really is much of a different in tax burden regardless of where you live in the country?

So far, the difference seems to be a couple percentage points from state to state. Anyone know if my super simple research is actually right?

I admit that the 1996 April Fool’s Blizzard is the only great winter weather event in which I have been personally involved.

We have an entire squadron of snowplows dedicated to keeping the runway at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport cleared in the winter. They run all 8 of them abreast, the runway cleared in a single pass, and then the plane departs while the trucks reset for the next plane.

According to this there is about 7% difference between NY state(the highest) and Alaska(the lowest)

Not sure if it takes into account cities like NYC that impose a local income tax or if it is just state level taxes.

The Breonna Taylor tragedy was chillingly reminiscent of an old L&O episode that involved bounty hunters, not police, tracking a criminal who jumped bail. (In this episode there was no racial component) . The bounty hunters ended up killing 3 innocent people. They broke into an apartment where the criminal was hiding out and started firing because one thought he saw a weapon. And despite the efforts of our favorite assistant DA to prosecute them, they skated because a judge ruled that their actions did not violate the law.

Well, I’m old and jaded so when I see these kinds of promos I immediately think that the apocalyptic genre is all played out. Especially when it is entwined with supernatural stuff. But maybe this series will prove me wrong.

I read the novel years ago and I’ve watched the ‘94 miniseries a few times, so I’m not gonna sit here and argue that the story is top-notch and worth retelling. And yeah, the post-apoc genre has been done to death since ‘94, so this isn’t really bringing anything new to the table. At the same time, I did enjoy the story for the most part…provided you ignore that whole ginormous ass-pull to solve the whole “puny mortals versus the Anti-Christ/Satan” bit. So I’m in a “wait and see” mood right now. The acting was what made the ‘94 version worthwhile, so let’s see what we get this go-around.

Three days after Hatewatch reached out to Russia Insider editor Charles Bausman for a comment on this story, someone took both Lancaster Patriot and oc (dot) binaria (dot) ru offline. Local news outlet Lancaster Online reported on Sept. 26 that Lancaster Patriot was edited by Trey Garrison, a 51-year-old Holocaust-mocking Twitter troll who for years embodied the online persona “Spectre,” while podcasting for the white nationalist organization The Right Stuff.

For years, Marcus Braziel took his customers at their word when they showed up with wads of cash to buy one of the customized AR-15-style rifles he advertised for sale on the internet.

If they said there was no legal reason to prevent them from owning a gun, Braziel said, that was good enough for him. He saw no need for obtaining a license and conducting formal criminal background checks.
But that was before federal agents showed up at his door in Lubbock, Texas, and told him they’d traced one of his weapons to a mass shooter.
“I wanted to vomit,” Braziel recalled in an exclusive interview with CNN. “My life has not been the same since. I will be forever sorry.”
Braziel, 45, pleaded guilty Wednesday in US District Court in Lubbock to felony charges of dealing and manufacturing firearms without a license and filing a false tax return that failed to report income from his gun sales. He faces up to five years in federal prison under a plea deal with prosecutors.

Folks have suggested that Donny will go “scorched earth” if he loses and I think there’s something to it, even if I don’t think he’ll actively work to hurt the country. No, what he’s going to do is basically just shutdown and sign out. Everything he promised “after the election”? He’s going to blame everybody (Dems, Repubs, voters, fraud, etc) for why he’s putting the kibosh on all that. Any legislation brought up will automatically draw veto threats, which will be Mitch’s excuse for refusal to move on anything in the Senate.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Donny just decides he no longer wants to be in DC and preemptively moves back to NYC or sets up shop in Mar-a-lago. If he’s in DC on Inauguration Day, he won’t attend the formal events and will probably be reported as hostile to Biden if ever the two meet. Given how petty he is, he might very well try to drown out the whole thing with pressers and rallies, if only to bitch when the media ignores him.

I’ve been trying to figure out if, once you factor in all taxes (federal income, state income, fuel tax, property tax, sales tax), if there really is much of a different in tax burden regardless of where you live in the country?

So far, the difference seems to be a couple percentage points from state to state. Anyone know if my super simple research is actually right?

Wallet Hub did something like that and found the range for property, income, and sales tax ranges from 12% to 5%. NY is at the top, DE and AK at the bottom. Average is 8.5%, with PA ranked 25th. NY has average property tax, but is highest with income tax and above average sales tax. FL has no income tax, so they’re super reliant on property tax (which means you see the taxes come out when you pay mortgages).

DALTON — A novel endorsement of the Biden/Harris presidential ticket went up in flames Friday night in Dalton, halting traffic on Route 9 and prompting an investigation into whether the fire was deliberately set.

A little after 6:30 p.m., a stack of 19 oversized and wrapped hay bales bearing the Democratic Party candidates’ names caught fire, sending smoke across the busy state road near Holiday Brook Farm.

Dicken Crane, the farm’s owner, said Dalton police and fire officials were at the farm Friday night, investigating.

Crane said he was running a tractor in a nearby field, baling hay. On one pass, the massive bales with the political message — stacked three high in places — were fine.

“When I turned around again, it was ablaze,” he said.

A 911 call at 6:40 p.m. summoned local firefighters.

Crane said that just minutes before, at 6:32 p.m., a farm employee noticed that a substance that resembled motor oil had been spread across a portion of the bales.

It remains unclear what ignited the fire, which consumed portions of the bales, each one worth $65.

“The assumption is that this was very deliberate,” Crane said. “But it’s hard to explain. Six minutes later it was on fire, but there was nobody there.”

Once the fire was extinguished, Crane inspected the debris and found that hay still inside the bales was cool to the touch. “It was not spontaneous combustion,” he said, a reference to fires that start naturally, including in silage.

We’ve had rain and wind but most of it has disappeared. More rain today but clearing out tonight. So Mother Nature is no help here.

Edited to add: wonder why this event isn’t on local news sites? That’s just weird for here. Also, my husband had insisted the owners of this venue were not political. Sure honey…..the place is a “luxury gun club”. Bar/Restaurant, indoor and outdoor ranges, gun store and gunsmithing services, you can rent space for events, etc. They are having a 50 percent off sale on the most expensive membership packages, the priciest one is 2500 a year. It’s located close to the private airport, where the rich folks fly in and out, after residents of a local subdivision didn’t want it directly across the street. The land had already been cleared, about 40 acres of trees. All that’s there is a bank branch surrounded by dirt.

St. Clairsville Police identified the passenger in the vehicle as David Saunders, 36, of St. Clairsville. Police say he had been missing since Sunday.

Saunders was found dead after the vehicle he was in drove off the side of I-470 hitting an exit sign.

One simple thing Facebook could do to be good citizens, and it wouldn’t even affect their bottom line, would be to shut down new account creation several months before a US Federal election (every two years, beginning after 4th July say). Chopping away at the troll accounts and bots can be carried out all the way to the election and beyond but if the bot farmers can’t create new accounts then their effects are limited to some extent. Sure, dedicated trolls can bank a bunch of fake accounts before the cutoff but it’s more work for them to keep those accounts alive and “healthy” to avoid bot detection and they’re likely to be targetted anyway during the run-up to voting.

In 1964, the Democrats won in a landslide, with huge victories across the board. I posted on the door to my dorm room a drawing of a headstone with the epitaph: RIP GOP. In 4 years, Nixon became president. The political landscape can change overnight. No one in 2019 foresaw a pandemic raging across the nation in 2020; we cannot predict what is likely strike us in the next 4 years.

It would be fabulous for the GOP to vanish from the face of the earth, but unfortunately that’s not happening. We just have to hope the Biden and Democratic victory is so overwhelming that the trajectory of our nation’s politics can be sufficiently altered to provide a better life for Americans.

People who find helicopter jokes funny. Ideologically I’ve actually not become more radical but I’ve become more convinced than ever that democracy and inclusion matter. But yeah it’s been tough. I’m not giving up but I’m definitely worn down mentally. It’s definitely made me more anxious about talking to people.

But the 2010 election started us back down the wrong road and the 2014 election accelerated our journey toward destruction. With the GOP in charge of both houses and McConnell in charge of the Senate, we were already heading in a very wrong direction. If Ted Cruz were elected in 2016, there may have been no way to recover from a journey to absolute plutarchy. Of course, depending on what happens on November 3, there may still be no way to escape a very dark fate.

That’s what has hurt the GOP here. They can’t win the diverse areas because the disdain is so obvious. Doesn’t hurt that Dr. Cameron Webb is a great candidate as well.

Wendell Wilkie is probably my favorite 20th century Republican, even more so than Eisenhower. Eleanor Roosevelt said later that she and FDR admired Wilkie more than they did any other Republican, and more than most other Democrats. After his defeat in the 1940 election, Wilkie offered his services to FDR in the crisis building up to US participation in World War II. FDR accepted, and Wilkie traveled all over the world as a kind of roving ambassador. He wrote a visionary book, One World, on the basis of those experiences. Its theme, international unity, would have present-day Republicans turning purple, foaming at the mouth and rolling on the floor in terminal fits of rage.

One World is a manifesto and a travelogue written by Wendell Willkie, a liberal Republican, about his seven-week, 31,000-mile tour, and originally published in April 1943. It advocates for an end to colonialism, World Federalism, and equality for non-whites in the United States.

One World inspired the One World movement and the World Federalist Movement — which included among its supporters Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru —and advocated strong and democratic super-national institutions. That wave of thinking gave birth to the postwar international order, including the United Nations System, but was also very critical of the postwar order and the UN, claiming it is insufficient to avoid another world war.

I was listening to the Sarah Kendzior podcast last night. She and her co-host had Tim Snyder, the Princeton historian on. He was talking about how pain and cruelty are parts of authoritarian system. And how Austria having stable, inexpensive, and available medical care positively affect citizens’ mental outlook in a way that is missing in the US.

Snyder has written extensively on the authoritarianism and fascism. He is now on a book tour for his latest book, about health care. It is based upon his experiences under both US and Austrian health care systems. And about his experiences with an undiagnosed burst appendix, that almost killed him.

I was watching it because, although I have baked bread in the kitchen oven and in dutch ovens, I was curious how to cook it with campfire and hiking type gear. Also, bannock seems to be a fairly generic term, being used for yeast based breads, quick breads, and even fried dough. (At least on youtube.)

It appears that basically, the dough is placed in a pan and that placed in a larger pot (aka ‘billy’) which becomes the heated baking chamber. Usually the ‘dough’ pan is placed on some pebbles to keep it from touching the bottom of the ‘billy’.

I made some hawaiian pizza last night, but I burned it. I guess I should have set the oven temp a bit aloha.

Interesting! Was it forged from a single bar or were several pieces welded together?

That’s a question on the Blacksmithing forums this morning. Most agree that it’s a forge welded piece. 4 bars. Same could be done by a splitting a square bar both ways and then drawing the hooks out and punching the hole.

I find it interesting to look at the decisions the blacksmith made.

I suspect that in the days before electrically-powered heavy equipment it was a lot easier to work with multiple lighter pieces rather than with a single heavier piece.

Just looking at it, I would have guessed it was a single piece. But IANAB, and I don’t really know what’s possible in this realm.

Reminds me of when Trump crashed a party thanking a charity donor (not himself), walked up and sat down in the chair meant for the donor who was supposed to be honored.
