Ohio has a population of 12 million. Victoria (Australia) has half that number, but when they scored 1 day of over 700 cases (740 I think) in August, the state went into lockdown. It was a stronger lockdown in the capital city (5 million). Masks are compulsory, people could not travel further than 5km apart from permitted reasons (work, healthcare & similar), and a curfew. WFH was the norm for most people.
Today many of the restrictions were eased. There were 5 straight days of single figure cases & a 2 week average of 7.5.

This claim exaggerates the number of indictments under Trump, in particular, by counting the number of criminal charges filed, rather than the number of people indicted; and it includes the indictments of people who are not part of his administration, such as 25 Russians.
On the whole, however, the indictments under the three GOP presidents do dwarf those under the three Democrats.

‘Every alarm going off’ in Ohio’s COVID-19 data, but DeWine resists talk of new shutdown—Facing record-breaking diagnosis totals, Ohio’s governor makes the same plea he’s made since July
“There’s a limit to what a governor could do or should do,” he said. “We are at the point where we have to live with this virus. The consequences of going in and shutting things down again would be devastating, not just financially, but devastating to people in their individual lives. We do not want to be in a position to do that.”
He and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted said they would likewise not move to curtail political events such as President Donald Trump’s rallies and would not enforce required mask-wearing at polls on Nov. 3.

It’s what I’ve been saying for months: They gambled big on the idea that things would be back to “normal” by August, figuring that people would have “gotten over” the pandemic by the end of summer. Instead, all the summer did was kick a complicated if manageable outbreak into a national disaster due to too few governors wanting to be seen as “the bad guy.”

Just a thought: as Democrats are fixing the Judiciary, they should include the following:
since the executive cannot, in Justice Robert’s view, carry out its duties without explicit instructions from the legislative branch, we are assuming that the Judiciary cannot either, and therefore the head of each court must take bathroom breaks at ten am and three pm, and at no other times.

I honestly expect it to be a rather bleak winter this year. There’s virtually no chance that Senate Repubs will sign off on another relief bill, which is going to mean spending the next two months listening to the media whine that Dems are the ones really holding things up by not allowing piecemeal legislation to save those parts of the economy that Repubs agree with. So that when Biden takes the oath of office in Jan, he’s going to inherit a deepening recession and a renewed interest in “austerity” from the assholes who just got done driving up the deficit to record highs.

A solid apartment in a well-maintained NYC building, up-to-date plumbing and electrical… especially if it has elevators, laundry room and sufficient staff… $1000 per square foot is to be expected. A “luxury” building is significantly more expensive than that.

Deep in the middle of the northwoods, I was looking at a parcel a couple of miles off the paved roads with a small warming cabin on it. 126 acres, might have a creek running through the far end. $156k.
Say another $30k for a small trailer house with solar and wind power. Probably cellular for internet.
Less than $200k for a private paradise.
Likewise Id have to win the lottery too…
actually they measured 247 zeptoseconds as the shortest period of time ever.

Only a choice to people who insist on giving money directly to billionaires.
Bailing out people means bailing out the consumer economy which bails out Wall Street, and, unfortunately the billionaires.
Trickle down doesn’t work. Trickle up does. (Which tells you that our perception of what is “up” and what is “down” is wrong).

It really helps that Twitter finally drew the line and did not let the bots get a hold if it: in the New Media Reality we occupy, “Trending on Twitter” is a news item in itself.
I really would like to see Twitter freeze Trump’s account from Nov 3rd until final vote tallies are in. Let them freeze Biden’s as well as far as I care, but most of all, they need to prevent Trump from coming out and declaring a premature “victory”.

WTF is GOTV? Our thread-head incantation feels good, but it’s vague. It makes more sense when broken into specific tasks. Most of the country is moving out of the 2020 voter registration season, but here’s a start on a positive action list for the next two weeks:
1. Prepare and organize to support the people who are going to stand in epic voting lines. Make or join a team to safely move sealed water, snacks, and comfort items to problem precincts when they are identified by media and poll watchers. Solidarity is as important as calories. If lines don’t develop you have emergency and camping supplies.
2. Redeploy yard signs from your neighborhood to nearby high-traffic routes and approaches to polling places (Dressing the Polls). Learn the local rules for right-of-way and cleanup.
3. Bug local election officials, law enforcement, and media with your concern for the safety of the polling places. Elicit statements on the rules and enforcement commitment.
4. Join a group that is doing last-minute person-to-person education, but only with attention to CV19 risks. Calls are better than postcards are better than door hangers are better than door knocking.
5. Pre-plan and promote safe carpool bubbles for family and friends.
6. Assign yourself to two sane acquaintances who are soft on turnout. You have two weeks to turn them into Hardcore Leftist Radicals Voters.
7. (Open to suggestions.)
In all cases concrete measurable activity, something that makes noise and casts a shadow, will defeat our natural sense of fatigue and frustration.

Nothing’s pure. Especially not the Olympics. The past 50 years of the Games were known for bankrupting the cities that hosted them, and not least for destroying and demolishing the concept of pure “uncommercial” sport. (While the organizers looted the treasuries…)

TL;DR: Despite the massive surge in coronavirus cases in Nebraska, Governor Run Nebraska Like A Business still insists there will be no “heavy hand of government” in dealing with the virus. He insists “we must do better,” but not that. The only order he will issue is bars must prohibit standing, only allowing sitting.
TestNebraska, the libertarian techbro Utah group which has no experience in epidemiology or medicine but is still working on it’s no-bid contract to provide testing to the state is taking five days to turn around tests.
The cities of Kearney and Grand Island requested from the governor permission to impose mask mandates in their cities, which was denied by the governor, because Nebraska is a dictatorship where one billionaire makes decisions for 1.9 million people. (Omaha and Lincoln still have mask mandates.)
The governor has also prohibited turning away voters who do not wear masks to polling stations in counties which use those. Polling stations may also not offer paper masks.
Government offices may not require masks, with the threat of withholding federal CARES funding (this includes schools). Schools which remain closed (such as mine) are being threatened with pulling state aid unless they return to in-person classes.

This is a factor that Trump cannot deal with. Biden is a likeable guy, as was Obama (except to the racists). Things do not stick to him, people aren’t inclined to pay attention to attempts to drag him through the mud.
He has managed to come across as flawed but human, compassionate and competent. Trump has nothing to counter that image.
I thought I was tense and nervous back in April when I happened upon this plant. The last 30 days feels like it has been going on for months. When out hiking I wear a mask but we see many people who do not. I step aside to increase distance between us - those that thank me and/or are wearing a mask give me hope that we can get through this together and those that don’t - remind me that our country elected one the most selfish pricks on the planet.

Carrying the name is not a matter of choice,
The bin Laden family is big in Saudi Arabia, it was a tossup back in the day when lines were being drawn in the sand to create the modern Middle East states whether the House of Saud would be in charge or the House of Laden. Think of them as the Kennedys compared to the Bushes in USA politics. The Laden family disowned their errant son Osama a long time back, with the approval/under the instruction of the House of Saud although sympathisers/family kept him supplied with money. It’s one reason why he had a hard-on against the current Saud dynasty and regarded them as apostates.

I have recurring shingles, which is adult chickenpox.
We know little about long-term effects of Corona and how long immunity lasts, and the “herd immunity” solution was simply one proposed on the grounds that it would be the least economically impacting.
And no wonder the British were big into it, they already have the impact of a no-deal Brexit looming over them.

On Thursday, October 8, Bridgeport Girl Scouts held their annual fall Investiture and Bridging ceremony at the public library. Yes, my state senator wants to move entirely to a flat sales tax to fund the state, despite being already upside-down in the budget. We have one of those bullshyte libertarian balanced budget amendments in our state constitution, so the effect would be to eliminate social services and public schools (both longtime goals of conservatives).
As you may know, each week I have been writing about what I am calling the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights. Last week I discussed what is wrong with taxing incomes. This week I will expose what is wrong with taxing property. Property taxes come in two forms, personal property taxes and real estate taxes. In Nebraska personal property taxes are imposed on all business equipment, whereas real estate taxes are imposed on commercial, residential, and agricultural real estate.
The third right contained in the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights states: “The State of Nebraska shall never impose or collect a tax on the property already owned by its citizens, regardless of whether such property is real or personal, tangible or intangible.”
I really need to run for the Unicameral. I’d probably get shellacked, but at least Steve Erdman would actually have to campaign rather than write op-eds.

re: #219 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
We know little about Corona,
If you mean the SARS-COV-2 coronavirus actually we, the scientific world “we”, knows an incredible amount about it. “We” also know how it spreads and how it infects people, “we” know the exact RNA sequences of many of the evolved genetic variants of SARS-COV-2 that are circulating, “we” have multiple vaccine candidates in train to stimulate immunity in the world’s population using several different techniques.
Stuff “we” are not sure about but which “we” have a general handle on are things like how it affects individuals, what are its secondary effects on blood clotting, lung damage, circulation etc. and why young people and children respond differently to this infectious virus. That difference is being investigated hard because it may lead to a more effective treatment for older people who preferentially suffer more from this disease.
Things we can derive from our experiences with other coronaviruses like SARS-COV-2 are that reinfection is likely, acquired immunity fades over time, seasonal effects like cold dry air exacerbate infection rates etc. and that it’s NOT GOING AWAY. It should fade into the background like its kissing cousin influenza once a lot of people get vaccinated regularly with effective vaccines and its spread is perforce limited. That’s still some time in the future though.

I’m old enough to remember when only amateur sports people could take part in the olympics (and the tennis majors). Money turned sport into a business and of course the hangers on all turned up to get their cut.
The problem with this is that the concept of “amateur” in the Olympics was always bullshit.
The Soviets gave financial support for their athletes. They were defacto professionals.
Meanwhile, US athletes had to pass the hat, and the most popular sports ended up being supported by commercial interests anyway.
In the past 4 years we’ve seen how important it is to elect people who have the capacity to build competent teams, trust experts, and be guided by curiosity, transparency, and strategy. Larry Hogan wrote in Ronald Reagan; he’s running in 2024.
Letter to the editor of my county paper (I’ve never written them before) responding to my state senator’s nonsense about the so-called Taxpayer Bill-of-Rights. Let’s see if they run it. (I know the publisher and typesetter personally.)
Senator Steve Erdman has been writing about the so-called Taxpayer Bill of Rights. What he doesn’t tell you is who promotes it and why.
This so-called Bill of Rights is promoted by libertarians, primarily the Koch’s Americans for Prosperity, Douglas Bruce of Colorado, and Americans for Limited Government (which views lower taxes as good for their own sake regardless of need).
Presumably Sen. Erdman only believes excise and sales taxes (flat taxes) are worthwhile. These taxes are regressive by nature, forcing the tax burden of governance down on those least able to afford it. Warren Buffett after all pays the same sales tax on a blender as you would.
We have an example of how the so-called Bill of Rights works: Colorado’s so-called TABOR amendment. The immediate effect of that was to drive down Colorado’s higher education funding to 48th, down from 34th when it was passed.
The so-called Taxpayer Bill of Rights also prohibits states from raising emergency budgets when needed for particular problems (such as a pandemic), nor does it account for economic slowdowns (which reduce revenue from flat taxes but does not reduce the need for government services).
Colorado’s TABOR amendment was so hated by the voters much of it was repealed and attempts to bypass its restrictions are called “de-Brucing” in that state. Mr. Douglas Bruce was subsequently convicted of tax evasion and charity fraud.
These sorts of measures are couched in the language of the average worker, but only benefit the fabulously wealthy. Sen. Erdman should know this.

Ameritrade why my evil too big to fail employer not only sent home everyone it could (some jobs like actually counting money have to be done onsite) but bought laptops and sent home phone bankers and others who would normally have never worked at home. That’s how seriously they took it. I suppose that since the leadership of my evil too big to fail employer is now mostly based in NYC/NJ, the wailing of sirens taking people to hospital in the early days of the pandemic probably helped the decision.
And even with so many people working from home, the people who have to go into the office are at risk. I got an email on October 10 informing me that two cases of COVID-19 had occurred on October 5, one in each of the two main buildings at the operations center. Frankly, that unnerved me because (a) it’s still happening despite precautions being taken and (b) cases in both buildings. I’m not going back on December 1 no matter what they say.

I really need to run for the Unicameral. I’d probably get shellacked, but at least Steve Erdman would actually have to campaign rather than write op-eds.
Adam Smith on a progressive tax:
“The necessaries of life occasion the great expense of the poor. They find it difficult to get food, and the greater part of their little revenue is spent in getting it. The luxuries and vanities of life occasion the principal expense of the rich, and a magnificent house embellishes and sets off to the best advantage all the other luxuries and vanities which they possess. A tax upon house-rents, therefore, would in general fall heaviest upon the rich; and in this sort of inequality there would not, perhaps, be anything very unreasonable. It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion.”

Florida To Experiment With New 600-Lever Voting Machines
MIAMI—Responding to widespread criticism of voting procedures that have plagued the state since the 2000 election, the Florida Elections Commission announced Thursday its plan to experiment with new 600-lever voting machines.
The 22-foot-tall, 11-foot-wide steam-powered machines, which Florida officials are hailing as “the future of voting,” each feature more than 45 separate panels of levers, along with an intricate series of valves, knobs, cranks, pumps, and switches, all reportedly designed to help ease the electoral process and ensure accurate balloting this November.

You want more dirt? Juan Antonio Samaranch, IOC president at one point, was a straight-up crony with Franco. And another IOC guy, Avery Brundage, was a Nazi sympathizer.
I will never give Mitt Romney the time of day for anything, but I believe everything he said about the IOC when he was involved in the Salt Lake City Games.
The SLC Games were turning into a first-class clusterfuck for two reasons—(1) the organizers had a lot of money and were able to hand out bribes like nobody’s business but (2) they really were a bunch of prominent Utahns (mostly Mormons) who were bigshots in the state, but outside of it, they were clueless rubes. As much as I despise Mitt Romney, his coming in and taking over did save the Games. At the very least, he wasn’t weird about serving alcohol at events where alcohol was expected, although he most certainly did not partake. In the meantime, the IOC and its buddies were steamrolling over the SLC Committee because the Committee was all worried about alcohol!

Maybe just the “conventional wisdom” take, but it has always seemed to me that Russ Feingold (and the State of Wisconsin in general) was a victim of one of the showcase PAC-funded, hugely-financed, GOP-takeover plots plans; starting after the 2010 Census, taking over the Statehouse, leveraging that into a gerrymandered “permanent majority” and then foisting Idiot Scott Walker on the state as Gov (and whipping up the usual “social-agenda” resentments to wedge Those People in Milwaukee and Madison from the “real Americans” in the boonies.
Oh, and providing an economic bonanza via the Foxconn “super-plant” deal ….

Wrong. Trump is the logical conclusion of conservatism. The GOP has been this way all my life.
Roger Stone got his start by rodent-copulating a NH primary by sending a cheque to the opponent he wanted defeated from a wholly made up youth socialist group, and when the candidate’s campaign cashed it, he went to the press screaming the GOP candidate was a socialist.

It’s been suggested before that instead of cities bidding on the Olympics, costing huge sums of money and rarely seeing returns, that the Olympics should just be designated in the place they started, Athens.
The IOC pays Greece to maintain or upgrade facilities, new ones don’t need to be built every four years, and cities around the world aren’t saddled with debts.
Like all things though, even when the Olympics lose money, billionaire investors make money and pass the costs down to the city. The IOC won’t change because sports is a business for billionaires, and the taxpayers of localities exist only to enrich them.

My brother got my mother’s hair cut this past week. I asked how the mask discipline at the salon was—it was very good. Everyone had masks on and there was sufficient spacing because there were very few clients in the place. I desperately need a cut, because, well, VANITY. I’m looking older with hair to my shoulders.
Anyway, if I do get a haircut, my plan is to get the cut, take my usual out in public precautions (wiping down hands with hand sanitizer, etc.), then come home and strip down to the skin, take a shower and bag up my clothes until I can get them into the next laundry load. Paranoid? YES. I’ll cop to that. And anybody who says I’m acting in fear can fuck right off. I’m not going to take a risk that I get someone else sick.

The last time I went to the states I wore shorts and a tee shirt with a floor length skirt and long sleeved shirt over them. I did my thing (keeping my mask on for the duration) and before I got back in the car dropped the skirt and long sleeved shirt into a bag, sanitized my hands and then got into the car. The bag stayed in the car for 15 days (I was on mandatory self quarantine) until I left the house again.
The whole thing was before and after… Before encountering another human in any proximity and after. There were a total of three stops, one where they put groceries into the back of the car (I was nowhere near them), one where CVS handed me drugs through the window (I tied the bag in a knot and sanitized my hands) and the last stop where I had to go into the UPS store to get a document notarized and pick up mail whick included two checks. No one was wearing a mask back then either. This was April I think, the border had just closed but I had to go (or I wouldn’t have).
Canadian CBP was not happy with me and I got an earful even explaining why I had to go, which included them taking all my personal info, advising me to self quarantine under penalty of law, and a sneer or two. (A phone call and multiple emails warning me to stay the fuck home followed.)

That’s just for the Summer Games.
Winter should be in Switzerland.
Summer games should rotate between three locations - LA, Athens… Seoul? Fairer to not have it in the same time zone every year, less gonzo infrastructure needed to be built every time.
Winter games it’s more complex, because where you run most of the outdoor events matters a lot, and you’d overemphasize specific slopes if you park it one (or even a few) places. Also on the timescale that the Olympics think on, climate change becomes problematic.

I was thinking about that the other day. In an argument about a flat tax, unless they are willing to tax all money, and exclusion, such as say, the first $5,000 or $10,000, is a progressive tax, we’re just haggling over the number of brackets.
