I think saying the law applies to everyone is preparing us for the arrests of high-ranking criminal politicians.
Garland said some of the right things about holding the powerful to account. So I’m being told on Twitter I should just sit and wait because these things take time. I don’t find this very reassuring, with America’s history. I hope this time will be different, but I’m not expecting it.

Southern California man was arrested after he recently attacked workers at a coronavirus vaccination clinic, allegedly calling them “murderers” and falsely accusing the staffers of causing the covid pandemic, according to police and clinic officials.
Two staff members with Families Together of Orange County were injured in a Dec. 30 attack on the group’s mobile clinic in Tustin, Calif., the organization said in a news release Wednesday. Families Together said one of the members “sustained serious injuries and was sent to the hospital in an ambulance” but that both workers “are expected to make a full recovery within a few days.”
“We are thankful for our team’s bravery, strength and resilience,” the group wrote. “Despite the violent nature of the assault, Families Together kept offering vaccines and boosters to patients that day and the team was fully back at work the following week.”
Thomas Apollo, 43, entered the clinic maskless last week and accused workers of being “murderers” who are “making people sick” before he started throwing punches at staffers, Parsia Jahanbani, mobile operations manager for Families Together, told the Orange County Register. Jahanbani recounted to the Los Angeles Times that it took multiple people at the clinic to pry Apollo away from a medical assistant he was beating up and that seven police officers were needed to restrain the man over about 15 minutes.

Overt crimes linking to more obscure ones. Some of Trump’s crimes were absolutely open and overt (where he was essentially bragging about doing the crimes)- so that diminishes the statement that all will be held to account.
The political timeline and the criminal justice timeline do not match up at all, and the political timeline is far more relevant as it can ultimately thwart any DOJ action against anyone in Trumpworld if Trump or his allies gain power in 2024 - because they can hamstring investigations, derail them outright, and if Trump or his allies retake the WH, issue outright pardons to all of them for their misconduct.

Didn’t the Watergate investigation take multiple years to get finished?
re: #47 Belafon
It took 2+ years, but that was for a fraction of the criminal misconduct we know to have occurred just in relation to 1/6 itself. That’s not counting the election fraud, interfering in federal election certifications, obstruction of justice, and all the rest.
Strong, emphatic, and determined speech by Garland. The key quote is when he referred to perpetrators who may not have been at the Capitol on Jan 6. But open question remains whether investig has or will extend to efforts to overturn the election, separate from Jan 6 culpability.

There’s also a point where being non-political in the face of multiple years of the DOJ *being* political and a lot of one-sided abuse makes people think that nothing will be done beyond hand-wringing and expressing “concern”. Because both parties are the same with different labels and there is no interest in really fixing things or addressing the issues.
(Tossing a bunch of low-level fools into the clink for a few years may look nice, but it’s decoration.)
I did appreciate Garland throwing some shade at Roberts over gutting the ‘65 VRA. But, it may be too little too late (not Garland’s fault). A large number of House Dems are retiring this year for a variety of reasons, but mostly, it seems, because they’re likely being gerrymandered out of competitive seats. So, yeah, to my small brain lawhawk’s observation of the lag between political events and DoJ actions is really worrying. Anyway, I think this was in a sense a political speech in that tomorrow’s commemorative events (that the GOP apparently won’t take part in) to be successful needed today’s speech as a foregrounding, an anchoring.

I was thinking this, too. If Trump somehow wins in ‘24 Hannity will have to begin each show eating a big turd out of a MAGA hat.

There is something seriously wrong with our country if gun-owning parents are so incompetent at parenting and gun-safety so as to keep their guns in a place where toddlers (who in my personal experience are very good at getting things they can reach) can get access to them.

Congrats! The grandkids are too young for vaccination. Boo. Hiss.
They just keep moving the date out further and further (although there is a chance Moderna will be available in a couple months.)
What is incredibly annoying is that Pfizer apparently found their test dose of vaccine was effective for 6 mo. to 2 years and they won’t put it in for approval because they haven’t found the dose for 2-5 year olds. So, we just won’t worry about the really young ones because they have to go in order of descending age as though it was being in line for the throne or marrying off your kids by seniority or something? Help me out here.
re: #25 Charles Johnson
Garland said some of the right things about holding the powerful to account. So I’m being told on Twitter I should just sit and wait because these things take time. I don’t find this very reassuring, with America’s history. I hope this time will be different, but I’m not expecting it.
Sorry if that makes me a downer, but it’s honest.
It’s called being a realist.
The story I heard about Garland being Obama’s nominee was that McConnell thought Obama would never pick Garland, because he was too middle of the road.
Obama, being Obama, went with Garland. Which then caused McConnell to decry Garland as Abbie Hoffman reincarnate.
Point being, if McConnell was initially okay with Garland before Obama nominated him, it kinda implies that Garland wasn’t a boat rocker would probably rule against Dems as often as he would the GOP.
Which, given the lack of urgency around, oh, I don’t know, fucking charging Trump with trying to destroy the Constitution and murder his VP and Congress with a mob of mouth breathing MAGAts, says to me that Garland will get to it when he gets to it.
And if the Republicans take over Congress next year? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Growing up in Pittsburgh, it always seemed to me that Pennsylvania had a good northern mindset for winter weather. It wasn’t always elegant, but it got the job done.
I will say, though, that Virginia’s mindset on clearing snow and ice from the roads has improved, a bit, from “Let the sun melt it”.
The DC area seems to still fit that old description “A city with all the charm of a Northern City. And all the efficiency of a Southern one.”

I can imagine how the local weather folks would talk about the weather that you handle routinely. In the last storm it seemed like the local forecast descriptions were “The Apocolypse”, “Armeggadon” and more simply “Run! Run! Flee for your lives!”.
(It wasn’t quite that bad. But still…)

Which is simply a periodic happening for places like that and further south.
They don’t have winter weather events of that scale often enough to feel they need to spend the money to keep and maintain a sufficient stock of snow removal equipment and associated materials (salt, sand, whatever). So the city and highways get paralyzed for multiple days while they dig out. (IIRC, Atlanta got hit by 3-4” a few years ago and was out of commission.) And there is hand-wringing afterwards, followed by things not changing.
And I’d state that this doesn’t compare to the Texas power grid since roads being messed up is generally less dangerous to the public at large (stay at home and off the roads) as compared to a power failure which leads to people freezing to death at home itself.
I experienced the big Veterans’ Day snow storm in the DC area in 1987 (11.5”) first hand. Including getting stuck on I-95 for about seven hours.

I think Pittsburgh had to take it seriously in part due to the terrain. Lots of slopes that get dangerous if you leave them unplowed or allow them to get icy.

I remember the 1987 snow too.
I was working in Columbia, Maryland at the time. Everybody else in the office fled at the first snowflake. I waited for a couple of hours and then drove home. Past abandoned cars on deserted roads. It was quite surreal.
A couple of days later I was down in DC. Many of the streets there had not been cleared. Connecticut Ave in the Dupont Circle area had huge swaths of 6” deep ice.

Very true!
There are some techniques that are needed in Pittsburgh that I have never used elsewhere.
I was driving up a hilly road behind a VW bug. The traffic light turned red.
I noticed that the last bit of the road before the light was a huge ice patch. So I stopped well clear of the ice patch on clear road.
Sure enough, when the light turned green, the VW Bug (manual transmission) tried to go into gear and slid backwards down the ice patch until it caught the clear pavement and could stop.

Here’s a nice positive story from the current disaster on I-95.
Casey Holihan and her husband, John Noe, had been stranded on Interstate 95 in Virginia for about 16 hours when they got an idea.
The couple spotted a Schmidt Baking Company truck just a few cars ahead of them about 9 a.m. Tuesday. At that point, they estimated, it had been approximately 37 hours since they had last eaten.
“We were starving,” said Holihan, 23, who at the time was at a standstill near Quantico. “People around us were very much struggling as well. We could hear kids crying.”
They decided to call Schmidt Baking Company in Baltimore in the hope that maybe it would be willing to offer whatever products were on the truck to hungry travelers. The couple knew it was a long shot, but they — and countless other people, some of whom were trapped on I-95 for close to 24 hours after snow and ice triggered an overnight shutdown — were desperate for food.
They reached the customer service line and left their phone number with a representative.
“I didn’t think it would actually work,” Holihan said.
What happened next stunned her: Just 20 minutes later, Chuck Paterakis, one of the owners of H&S Bakery, which operates Schmidt Baking Company, called the couple directly.
He advised them to go to the truck, then instructed the driver to offer up two products — one package of rolls and one loaf of bread — to any person who wanted them.
Drivers were stuck on I-95 when one saw a bakery truck. Soon, stranded motorists were breaking bread together. (WaPo via MSN)

re: #100 Eclectic Cyborg
My wife lived in Pittsburgh when I met her. She has some stories about that.
A few years back I was visiting a friend of mine that lived up Mt Washington. His neighbor a week or so before had slid off the road on ice and went down a 40 foot ravine. She lived but had some bad injuries. If it had happened a bit farther up the road she could have plunged about 100 feet. I say if it’s bad, take the incline and catch a bus at the bottom.
re: #56 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)
There’s also a point where being non-political in the face of multiple years of the DOJ *being* political and a lot of one-sided abuse makes people think that nothing will be done beyond hand-wringing and expressing “concern”. Because both parties are the same with different labels and there is no interest in really fixing things or addressing the issues.
(Tossing a bunch of low-level fools into the clink for a few years may look nice, but it’s decoration.)
I think this is where the crux of the matter lies. Folks are so used to the overt politicization of institutions at the hands of the GOP that they believe that’s how it should work. This feels especially the case of the media. All this in turn creates the self-fulfilling prophecy where lack of overt politically-motivated activity is politically bad, because people expect the fast, flashy, fashy movement meant to captivate but not actually be legally actionable. And for that…well…I have no fucking answer. Because as much as I understand the need to actually do the full due diligence rather than act half-assed for political gain, the problem is the half-assed action for political gain works, at least for what it’s meant to be. Look how Bill Bar’s transparent spin on the Mueller report completely defanged it, precisely because the media bought fully into it, and thus the public only heard that part.
The problem here is if we try to emulate that kind of movement, we don’t have your Fox Newses, Rush Limbaughs, Breitbarts, OANNs, etc. to run the bullshit screens for us and encourage the ‘legitimate’ media to run with it. Hell, ‘legitimate’ media already is primed to believe the worst-case scenario for Dems from anything that happened, does anyone believe that Garland going full bore political agent at the podium would do anything but result in all knives out for him, Biden, and the whole of Dems?
So…yeah. It’s just a damned if you do damned if you don’t situation, because the actual work takes time and lack of bombast, but we need the bombast and express action to even buy ourselves time to actually do the due diligence without it being stonewalled to death, and it’s just a full death spiral we can’t fight our way out of.
re: #102 Punish Domestic Terrorists

re: #105 Citizen K
You make a good point.
That there are different mindsets and skill sets. Some are better suited for different tasks.
Garland, as I understand it, comes from a government judicial background. Where the judge is not supposed to be the center of the news story. Instead the case is supposed the central figure in the story.
Leadership, particularly political leadership may require more performative activity in order to motivate people and move things in a specific direction.
And theater is highly performative, with reduced substance. Which is generally what we had with tfg’s administration.

Sweden created the Swedish Psychological Defense Agency on Saturday to combat election disinformation.Ahead of the country’s Sept. 11 general election, the agency was created on Jan. 1 to fight against disinformation and undue election influence, The Associated Press reported.
“We defend our open and democratic society and free opinions by identifying, analysing and responding to inappropriate influences and other misleading information directed at Sweden or Swedish interests,” the agency’s website states.
The group says it will “offer support to agencies, municipalities, regions, companies and organisations and contribute to strengthening resilience within our population.”

This the one thing I do not understand regarding the vaccine. Both Pfizer and Moderna are vaccines that are genetic code based. There is no dead or live virus in them. That actually makes them safer than a vaccine that has a bit of the virus in it like J & J. Are these folks so afraid of new technology that they are willing to die of the virus?
No. It’s political theater.
If another pandemic disease or similar made an outbreak it’s 50/50* that the GOP and associated nuts will accept a vaccine for it without complaint whether it was a typical one or RNA/DNA based.
Trump and the Republicans made a political calculation that keeping the economy running full-out and poo-poo-ing the virus and how to properly react to it outweighed the potential political cost of doing any sort of effective lock-down. There would still be anti-vaccine and anti-mask nuts, but they wouldn’t have the majority of the media and one of the political parties backing them to the hilt.
* - I say 50/50 since the GOP may well have poisoned the well badly enough regarding government led public health measures that they feel they do have to resist any vaccine for any disease from now on.

They believe that because of the disinformation. Now the poison is in their heads, so it will continue indefinitely, but it could have been stopped at one time.
Back when we had the big three networks, and far-right propaganda was circulated in newsletters via the mail rather than on TV and Facebook, we had a lot less delusional people running around. We still had nutjobs, but we hadn’t lost a major political party to them.

Trumpism is a factor, but Right-wing Christians laid the groundwork for the mass suicide long ago, calling vaccines “the mark of the beast,” and their Jonestown could have happened with any new vaccine. They should have been fringe kooks in a sane society, but their numbers are so large now that they control the Republican party.
Trump is a symptom. Right-wing, theocratic, lie-based politics is the disease.

Don’t. Just don’t, you WILL get sick. We all just need to buckle up here and do the right thing.
this year I think I’m just going to bypass all of the political punditry bullshit… the usual doom and gloom about what Dems can and cannot do…
despite the playing field tilting done by the media, the complete hypocrisy that we see from the GOP to endorse and condone political sabotage in these times have caused a great many of us to simply tune out. I don’t need to be inundated every day by a media that calls balls and strikes differently depending upon which team is on the field.
We know who is to blame, and we know who is trying… the GOP simply wants to be in control and punish people that do not share their POV, period, they’re in a club and we’re all very much no in it. So that makes it easy, do I want to cast my vote for a party that is trying to solve the problems that we face or do I want to be a spiteful SOB….

I never play online because they’re almost all suckers. If you don’t fold the first 50+ hands some schmuck will luck out and take you out. Case in point. Hand one: I had AA hold cards. Not to mention there will be a lot of staff walking around and where ever the players go when not playing. If the area is at 42% vaccination, and the facilities are not requiring test, vaccination, masks, etc. then it’s essentially a super-spreader event since there is going to be exposure and then the virus gets to the tables within a day or two if it is not already there.

AA like other big pairs does not play well against multiple opponents. If I was in your situation in a tournament, and I had AA, and we were already in the money, and three went all in, I would almost definitely let my hand go and let two people bust and move up the pay ladder.

I’ve been playing a lot of poker in Red Dead Redemption Online lately, LOL. I keep telling myself it’s practice. I’ve actually been doing well, but like most free online poker, you play against a lot of psychos who go all in on every. Freaking. Hand.
Makes it hard to play a strategic game.

I played in exactly one poker tournament. My (at the time soon-to-be) brother-in-law fancied himself the hot shit at the poker table, and took me to a tournament at a local lakeside bar. (Essentially, a place that only very rich people would ordinarily see the inside of.) Call it beginner’s luck or being an outsider or whatever, but said brother-in-law-to-be wound up sitting beside me and watching as I went all the way to the second-to-last table before I got tired and bored and pushed all in until they took me out.

Philosophically, I don’t think that you should be able to vote until you have all the rights of an adult.
Practically, drinking and driving is the problem (for people of any age), not the drinking.
If an 18 year old isn’t responsible enough to buy a beer, they’re probably not responsible enough to buy a gun, serve in the armed forces, sign legally binding contracts, etc.
The drinking age is 18 in Europe, south America, Australia, and most of Canada, and drinking isn’t a big deal in those cultures as a result.
Maybe if an 18 year old could get a drink at a bar, instead of at a middle of nowhere kegger, they could just take an Uber home.
I’ll get off my soap box now.

I’ve seen a lot of irresponsible binge drinking when I was an RA in college in the 90s. Invariably it was someone sheltered at home getting their first taste of freedom, or a stupid hazing ritual.
I lived in a twin-cities community: Champaign the age was 19 and Urbana was 18. So of course the Champaign 18yos drove a few extra blocks to go to bars and then pick up a sixer for after hours parties. When the Feds threatened to cut funding for those state and communities that didn’t raise the age to 21, there was compliance, but usually 18yos like me got grandfathered in. I think it should stay 21. There. I said it.

I rarely bluff. I might limp in, hoping someone would do just what you said, then limp (call) again on the turn and (depending on where I was sitting) re-raise or go all in on the river (or if I’m so-so but fairly confident in my hand, do that on the turn so we don’t even get to the river), but if I’ve got the nuts, I’m taking you for every chip I can. Of course there’re variables; my hold cards, cards on the table, where I’m sitting, how many people are in the pot, etc., etc., etc., but while I’m pretty conservative in betting, I also take no prisoners.

I read those Harrington books back in the day. The best poker book I’ve read the last couple of years is “Play Optimal Poker” by Andrew Brokos. Gets into GTO and how to apply it to any opponent. Main thing I got out of it was polarized and condensed ranges and how to bet or not them. It’s great stuff. Not as “exactly the same” as Nirvana, though.
I started playing poker in little bars in Kenosha, WI. There was like a club almost where they had regular poker nights at this and that bar. I’d go do that two evenings a week. I’d never played hold em before that. I was hooked. I kept getting better and became friends with this one guy (who sadly passed away from diabetes at like 30). He’s the one who invited me to play with this group of pros. This was before WSOP was a big deal so a long time ago.

re: #254 Yeah Sure WhatEVs
I started playing in 2002. The first time I got my ass handed to me. The next morning I went out and bought a book on hold em strategy. I basically memorized what it said about position (the absolute most important thing in poker), and playing pretty tight, and what not. I immediately got better. I started playing small bar tournaments for $10 to $20 and started cashing regularly. Then I read tournament strategy and figured out jam strategies when your stack gets to around 10-12 big blinds and my win rate skyrocketed. You would be amazed at how many people out there still do not understand how to play the late game in tournaments. They will hold on to the last chip for dear life as the blinds eat them alive, then curse the poker gods when they bubble out.

“I was shocked until I seen the blood and I realized my 4-year-old daughter was really hit,” her dad, Derrick Delane, told KTRK-TV. “She didn’t know what was going on. She was asleep.”
Delane slammed the police’s sluggish response to the incident, accusing the cops of taking roughly four hours to arrive after his daughter was shot.

Ah. When I first saw it earlier today I didn’t agree that he looked ill. from that angle, though, he does look to be struggling.
These were the last three tweets Trump tweeted on January 5th. He knew what was coming, he knew the plan, and he had a ready scapegoat. Seditious conspiracy, period. pic.twitter.com/1lbMk2a5Zh

re: #297 I Would Prefer Not To
Got knocked out in 20th place for $53.00. Paid 6 bucks to enter. Not happy, no one is unless they win. Jammed on the button with A 5 (after it was folded to me). Big blind woke up with Q Q. I only had about 10 BB. Thanks for cheering me on.
Edit: I did better than player trump202@coinbase.com (a fucking trump supporter AND crypto nut).
Jamming any ace in that spot with 10BB was 100% the right thing you do. Glad you got more than just a min cash. Great job.
ADD: Fuck, way more than just a min cash. Almost 9X!

Thanks. I look forward to cheering you on when you make it to the final table at the WSOP. (may have to wait until next year).
re: #298 JC1
Is there a 21 minimum age for posting here as well? What if I’m not driving while doing it?
This isn’t your sandbox.
This isn’t your litterbox, threadshitter.
re: #299 jaunte
If you have some data that supports your argument, post that. Otherwise you’re just huffing.
I’m not denying the data that barring alcohol sales to a sub group of people will lower drunk driving accidents. I’m asking if that’s the criteria, why stop at 21? A 45 year old drunk behind the wheel is as dangerous as a 20 year old.
If lives saved is the only metric we’re considering, then why not mandate a 45 mph speed limit on the highways, 20 mph in neighborhoods, and enforce them in a draconic fashion?
Clearly we make rules knowing that they will cost X lives per year, and as a society we’re okay with those (65+mph speed limits, etc).
I’ve listed some of the reasons I’m against the 21 drinking age in post 223.
If we want to lower drunk driving deaths, we should lower the BAC limit to .02%, like much of the civilized world.

Cute.
I’m discussing issues at hand. I’m sorry that you have trouble dealing with differing viewpoints.
Have I been insulting to anyone?

Thousands of lives have been saved by increasing the drinking age to 21. Lives have also been saved by enforcing the laws to all ages.
I’m also happy not sending kids to war so that argument doesn’t work with me.
Lowering the drinking age is never going to happen. If it’s the hill you want to die on, enjoy.

I agree. And fully fund mass transit, which may be one of the mitigating factors in the rest of the world.

You’ve spun nonsense.
I don’t have a problem with differing viewpoints in general, other than the pineapple on pizza thing, but there are limits. You’re the one person here who annoys me. Do you think you’re the only person with a “differing viewpoint” here?
re: #287 Ace Rothstein
I wish we didn’t invoke Darwin. The right is always accusing us of being “Darwinists”. They love their soft eugenics, and too many liberals accept that framing.
Charles Darwin himself was horrified of the idea of “social Darwinism”.
I say this as one who DESPISES Republicans.
One calls it, “tone policing”, but I call it “not letting your enemies set the terms”.

Never is a long time. We might all be driving autonomous vehicles in 20 years; if drunk driving is the concern then it shouldn’t matter at that point.
In the meantime maybe we should raise the age of majority to 21, just to be consistent.
Have you spent much time abroad? The idea that an 18 year old can’t order a glass of wine or can of beer with lunch or at a sporting event is pretty ridiculous in much of the civilized world.

Just because you disagree, or don’t understand, doesn’t make it nonsense. Maybe Charles can add an ignore user feature.
I’ve been here over for over a decade, and unless Charles has a problem with my posts or with me in general, I’m not going anywhere.
You have yourself a nice evening.
PS. I love Hawaiian pizza.
All Americans should know that the Republican Party killed people trying to seize power and overturn Constitutional government.

853,612 dead.
Sigh. In Illinois, average new case count is over twice as high as in November 2020 and deaths continue to rise. The 7 day average is about 40% of the maximum in December 2020 but nothing to cheer about. Over 7 x as high as in July and August. Don’t know if it’s Delta or Omicron or some other variant that is striking people down here.

In much of the civilized word, they have excellent public transportation. Not so much in most the USA.

This is true, but we ride sharing now. It’d be interesting to see if drunk driving accidents have declined in recent (but pre covid) years as Uber and Lyft got introduced.

.
There aren’t any definitive or thorough studies on this subject — just a multitude of articles from sources with various degrees of credibility and knowledge of actual details of the events. The teachers are not likely to be well versed in the subject especially when the information is rapidly changing on a daily basis. Given the current battles over what should be taught about struggles of the past two centuries, you are putting teachers in firing line over history that has not been written. I am not a teacher but maybe some who are here, especially those with backgrounds in history, might have suggestions.

Government subsidized public transit in the countries you reference, even poor people can afford a monthly pass.
Uber and Lyft, poor people just can’t very often.

Found a study that shows significant reduction in alcohol related accidents among those under 30 after Uber got introduced.

The Right accuses us of trying to kill people with Covid and with a vaccine, of being Communists and Nazis, and a spending everyone’s money. And I think people are demonstrating how evolution works: a trait, even if it’s a social one, cause part of a group to not survive and environmental pressure.
