Ideally, musicians recording Tiny Desk (home) concerts adhere to the series’ core concept and perform behind some sort of desk, tiny or otherwise. But, barring that, it helps to make bookshelves your backdrop. When Aoife O’Donovan assembled her band at Portsmouth Book & Bar in Portsmouth, N.H., she made sure to note her surroundings: “It’s great to be here, surrounded by all these books.”

The Bostonian singer-songwriter, who these days splits her time between a solo career and her work with the Grammy-winning supergroup I’m With Her, has a sound nicely suited for bookish locales: O’Donovan’s warm folk-pop music conjures memories of the Northeast folk boom of the ’90s, the soaring plaintiveness of Indigo Girls and the winsome lilt of modern bluegrass, elevated by a voice that’s searching and friendly.

Backed by guitarist and singer Isa Burke (from the band Lula Wiles), bassist Ethan Jodziewicz (who’s toured with The Milk Carton Kids and others) and drummer Robert MacMillan, O’Donovan performed four songs from her gorgeous new album Age of Apathy. For the title track, they were joined by Virginia’s Yasmin Williams — herself a Tiny Desk veteran, not to mention one of the most inventive and surprising guitarists around.

The current attitude of the elites on both sides of the aisle in the wake of the draft leak could be explained in three words: “It’ll never happen.” That was the mantra for literal generations in this country, that Roe would never be overturned because it would be absolute political poison to the party that succeeded in doing it. So Repubs talked about abolishing it, Dems talked about enshrining it, but neither party ever did much on either front. There’s all sorts of laws on the books that date back to the 19th century regarding abortion that will go back into effect before the end of the year, laws that Dems could have done away with but did not. Likewise Repubs talked constantly about things like an amendment to ban abortion or create “personhood,” but whenever they were elected chose instead to ram through more tax cuts and war spending.

There is very real “dog that finally caught the car” energy on the Repub side, but there’s also a very real sense that Dems don’t know what to do because they never thought this day would actually come.

Great example: Rep. Enrique Cuellar who’s running for reelection in Texas as “pro-life” but currently facing a run-off against a progressive “pro-choice” challenger. The Dem leadership is currently engaged in damage control, to the point that they sent Jim Clyburn down there to basically insult anyone who doesn’t embrace “pro-life” Dem candidates as “close-minded.”

AOC, The Squad, and the CPC should not be fooling anybody, the Dem leadership and much of the party membership remain center-left and this ruling is going to cause them all sorts of grief in the months to come as their “pro-life” candidates in red and purple races face backlash from both sides.

The entire world is at its lowest level of deaths since March 2020. Worldwide case numbers have dropped to their lowest level since the Omicron surge began. But with this disease, a new subvariant could explode worldwide and lead to a new surge.

All we hear about now are outbreaks among the vaxxed and boosted. 5 of us dined tonight in the outdoor seating of a restaurant. One of the party was initially reluctant to join us because of the reports that the vaccines seem ineffective at preventing illness from omicron but she decided to brave it since we were outside.

Yesterday I celebrated Mother’s Day with 18 others at my sister’s, where dining was inside because it was chilly. We’ve all had so many interactions with others that avoiding illness is very much a matter of luck. I do wear a mask indoors when shopping but it’s not clear my luck will continue to hold up.

I think for the vaccinated population CV-19 is in the influenza level category, but I worry that reporting of low-level home-tested infections are going unreported. I’m convinced that I’ve caught it at least twice, perhaps three times though the third may have just been my annual sinus infection. The first time wasn’t too bad, just a day’s worth of my head aching followed by a cough that persisted for about two weeks. By contrast, the second time I caught it knocked me on my ass for the better part of a week. Head pounded like a rotten tooth, nose altered between being a faucet and locking up tighter than Ft Knox, body aches, chills w/o a fever, nausea, and near-constant fatigue. Started feeling “off” on Friday and didn’t start feel “normal” again until over a week later.

Experiences in the Spanish Civil War showed that tanks were vulnerable unless closely supported by infantry, so the lesson taken away by many was to build infantry support tanks that were big and slow like their WW1 predecessors.

Others, like Guderian, Liddel-Hart and DeGaulle understood that the idea was to put the infantry in armored carriers to allow it to keep up with fast-moving armor.

I wouldn’t call it propaganda. Blitzkrieg was a multi-echelon fast maneuver type of attack, and got to be blown out of proportion in its effectiveness because Hitler got very lucky with some stupid judgment. “Blyatskrieg” sort of looks like it, except it was intended to be a quick decapitation strike without the multiple echelons removing all the remaining enemy capability in the attacker’s rear, which was a bit of a boo boo in retrospect.

One miserable afternoon in 1972, I happened to be flying a Huey slick near An Loc in what was then South Vietnam. There was a road to my right and a few hundred feet below. We knew the NVA was using tanks in the area, something of a novelty since I had never actually seen an enemy tank before. I saw something pull onto the road about half a kilometer away. It was hard to see, a dirty green color and covered with branches. I resolved it soon enough and realized that it was in fact, an enemy tank, a T-54 or 55. I had no sooner spotted it than one of our escorting Cobras peeled away, approached to what seemed a suicidally short range and fired a salvo of rockets. At least two of them hit the tank, the unimpressive little puffs they make on metal are easy to distinguish from ground impacts. The tank kept moving for a second or so, then a white hot jet of flame erupted from the turret rim and the hatches and kept burning like some sort of Roman candle. It shot fifty feet in the air and blended into a sinister pall of very black smoke.
My first reaction was not to cheer. It was to think, “Shit, there are four guys in that,” followed immediately by the more usual “Better them than me.”
Then someone cheered on the radio, our sports indoctrination set in, and we joined in. This was brief of course, radio discipline being what it is. It really is joy, at one’s own continued survival, at a success in an appointed task, and in the proof of your comrades’ proficiency. The latter of course is a matter of life and death. The cheering and casual sports motif are mostly ways to mask the horror, though, and keep going until you either die yourself or you return to a world where such things are not the stuff of everyday life.

It’s hard finding good help these days.

I think I won’t attend the legal seminar I signed up for Friday; I have enough continuing legal education for this year anyway, and its going to be recorded for later viewing.

An art school friend of mine’s dad fought in the Pacific Theater in WW2. His dad recalled shelling a Japanese position against a hillside and smoked out an infantryman who ran like hell to avoid getting killed.

In this case, however, the soldier was more “infant” than “man”; apprarently this guy looked like he was barely 17. My friend’s dad, there to kill the enemy in any way, shape, or form, could only muster pity for this poor kid.

That story has always stuck with me, both for the insight into actually fighting a war I hopefully will never know; and how a solider of an era awash in racist propaganda of the worst kind could still muster compassion for an enemy combatant.

It’s partly why I blanch when I see comments here bordering on “The only good Russian is a dead one”, particularly in light of how the Russian army itself is riven with soldiers who are actively sabotaging their own side because they know how fucked up this is.

Plot twist: the aforementioned art school friend gave up illustration in favor of becoming a Catholic priest who was a big fan of Rush Limbaugh’s “common sense”. So that was weird….

The closest I ever came to seeing Pearl Jam live walking past the old Spectrum in Philly after leaving a Phillies game. They were among the last live acts to play there before demolition. Outside of Seattle, Philly is apparently one of their biggest cities.

The show must have been near its end as the doors were wide open and you could clearly hear “Yellow Ledbetter” drifting out into the ether. I wanted to see if we could walk in but my partner was like “Pass.”

It was very strange to hear a song sound like it was being played on a really loud radio, yet the source of it was the one of the biggest bands in world doing it live, out of sight, about 30 yards from where I was standing.

IVF requires getting viable eggs for implanting. The drugs you take to cause ovulation can overstimulate the ovaries and potentially release far more eggs. They will try to fertilize the best graded ones (based on testing to see condition and whether they appear to be viable). That means you’ll have more fertilized embryos that can be impregnated than a woman might consider for her lifetime.

This ruling would require holding them in perpetuity for no reason other than a bunch of cells might potentially become a person if impregnated in a woman who wants to bear children.

It’s not recommended to impregnate with multiple embryos - for health reasons.

They will test embryos for viability too - not every embryo can survive to create a live born baby. There are any number of chromosomal defects that can occur. The embryo might not even get implanted and settle into the uterus. You could have a chemical pregnancy but never get implantation leading to a viable pregnancy.

There are so many things that can go wrong.

It’s a super emotional experience and harrowing as all fuck. All these Christian fascists want to do is add to the cost and emotional toll for women and their significant others.

Multiple all of that exponentially and that’s what they’re doing with abortion. These forced birth Christian fascists don’t care. They intend on denying women agency over their bodies.
