Chinese Ships Harass US Navy Vessel

World • Views: 3,037

Joltin’ Joe Biden warned that Obama would be tested; now it’s China’s turn.

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon charged Monday that five Chinese ships shadowed and maneuvered dangerously close to a U.S. Navy vessel in an apparent attempt to harass the American crew.

Defense officials in the Obama administration said the incident Sunday followed several days of “increasingly aggressive” acts by Chinese ships in the region. The incident took place in international waters in the South China Sea, about 75 miles south of Hainan Island.

U.S. officials said a protest was lodged with the Chinese government over the weekend and it was to be repeated to a Beijing military attache at a Pentagon meeting Monday.

The USNS Impeccable sprayed one ship with water from fire hoses to force it away. Despite the force of the water, Chinese crew members stripped to their underwear and continued closing within 25 feet, the Defense Department said.

Sounds eerily similar to the Intelligence gathering aircraft they forced down early in Bush's tenure IIRC

This comes at the same time as Korea prepping for war footing ahead of their missile launch and the military excercise in South Korea. Interesting test from the orient, if you recall Bush was greeted with one from them as well with the downed plane.

The mission of the T-AGOS 23 Class ships is to collect, process, and transmit acoustic data in support of the Integrated Undersea Surveillance System (IUSS) mission requirements. The ship will be operated by the Military Sealift Command (MSC) utilizing both civilian and naval personnel to carry out its mission. A little bit! It's interesting that the crew is something like 25 contractors and about 25 Navy personnel. Not a very large crew.

A friend of mine who just retired as a Captain from the Navy told me that most boats these days are "missile barges with an IT staff". He basically said that he parks em and the Pentagon pushes the buttons.

We may see an era of many ships with smaller crews.

123 Ayatollah Ghilmeini  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 11:30:01am

From some of my pre-election commentaries

In the face of perilous times and tremendous difficulties, America is faced with a stark and real choice: between my proven record of leadership and accountability in public office against a man with no record of ever delivering anything and no proven ability except to make friends with people most Americans would have nothing to do with.

Rather than just learn our lessons and do what we normally do, dust ourselves off and move on, fixing what needs fixing, for the first time in our history, we are considering a radical overhaul of what it means to be America. We are preparing to take liberty itself and redefine it, appointing leaders who who will monitor everything we do and force us to measure up to THEIR standards, not ours.

Before we go down the road to European socialism, perhaps we should ask if European socialism works. In modern Europe, the residents do not reproduce, birthrates are at a rate for significant population decline. European socialism deprives people of their desire to work for themselves and create something of value to pass on to another generation. Forty years ago, there were several taxpayers per dependent recipient, today there are almost as many recipients as dependents. Eurosocialism talks about sustainability but has none itself.

1. The Economy- The future of America is fixing our energy dependence problem and preserving the engine of wealth and job creation in America- small businesses. Obama's plans will ruin small business and growth in our economy for years to come. McCain will cut government and taxes- the two things proven to create growth and jobs. Obama will grow the recession by increased taxes and spending. He will NOT end our energy independence unless some genius in Silicon Valley really can make microbes in mass quantities that make oil. Nukes and drilling will die the second Obama is in office.

2. The global crisis- Joe Biden spoke great truth yesterday. Obama would be tested in his first days in office. He will face a challenge from some malign person or groups and he will fail. Like all socialists, he is a weakling and a quitter who will not fight for freedom. Whether Putin starts crushing the Chechens, Latvians or Ingush, Iranian mideast mayhem or Kenyan pogroms against the enemies of the Luo tribe, or all together to just overwhelm tyro in his first days, assume the worst and Obama will not disappoint. Remember, enemies of America are praying for his victory because they know he will allow them to run wild and bring a quick end to the era of the indispensable nation.

3. Corruption and Ethics- Acorn is Obama and Obama is Acorn. From bogus registrations to oddly denominated contributions that smack of foreign denominated origin, add in Rezko and our Barry is Chicago ethics writ large. Do we really want a man who proudly funds the people seeking to undermine the sacred ballot box? Do we want a many who lies about his association with an apologetic terrorist? Do we want a man whose word is worthless? He made a promise to the McCain campaign and then broke it.

4. The War- Iraq may be ramping down but Afghanistan is ramping up and war with Iran over its nukes is a distinct possibility. Given his woeful ignorance of what is really happening in the world, his comments about how small a threat Iran is the case in point. Bill Clinton was more prepared to lead the US military than Obama; Billy was simply awful his first two years, but lucky, his years of learning were at a time when he had the luxury of time to learn without any real challenges.

Oh yeah, I called it.

Why the Obama admin financial policy is gearing up to create inflation

The modern taxation system is tremendously efficient. First you're taxed when you earn money (income tax) and then again when you spend it (value added or consumption tax). But between what you earn, after tax, and what you spend there is occasionally a bit left over, which we call savings, and without inflation governments can find it very difficult to help themselves to this bit in the middle. However, with inflation, a whole realm of taxes on savings becomes viable.

re: #139 Iron Fist

Every Navy ship should have at least a CIWS installed....with a ROE that will allow the Captain of a ship to open fire if they are directly threatened while in international waters. This ship should have a frigate as an escort the next time it transits those waters....and the ROE should be identical to that of the Sixth Fleet when it crossed Libya's 'Line of Death' to assert the international right of navigation. Crossing 100 yds in front of the bow, low level fly-by's, and closing to 25' are all threats that warrant self-defense.

Peace comes from strength and diplomatic success comes from the ability to provide a viable stick to support your goals. But that is foreign to the left...the world is only seen as how they want to see it.

They are going to find it hard to tax what will disappear due to rampant and runaway inflation. When prices escalate due to inflation while earnings remain stagnant, saving money is a luxury.

CIA Awkwardly Debriefs Obama On Creation Of Crack Cocaine

February 26, 2009 %P% Issue 45•09
WASHINGTON—In his first meeting with President Barack Obama, CIA crime and counternarcotics analyst Timothy R. McIntire haltingly explained to the nation's first African-American commander in chief the highly classified origin of crack cocaine and the resultant epidemic that swept across U.S. inner cities. "Well, you see, sir...thing is, we needed money to help those Contras back in '85, and we never really expected...so we distributed it, and...shortsighted...and, ha, well, Christ—is it hot in here?" McIntire said between exaggerated coughs. "Yikes, okay. See, it was a very tense time—not that that makes it right—and, uh, bottom line is, we're a different agency now."

McIntire went on to disclose several other secret CIA operations, including the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and the recruitment, four years earlier, of a Kenyan grad student for a clandestine program at the University of Hawaii.

Since it is not a combat ship, there's no need for the expense of adding armaments. It is basically a research ship, geared towards underwater acoustics. If you add weapons, on top of the expense of the weapons themselves, you also need to add sailors to operate those weapons, meaning you need a larger ship. So long as the Chinese were not pulling tricks, this makes sense. I guess now they'll need to have an armed escort. However, having an armed ship nearby would create noise which would harm the ship's mission.

I've been updating the Mohammed Image Archive recently, and just added an image that is sure to earn me a double-fatwa -- from the Muslims and the Scientologists!

The picture in question is here (close-up version here), with the caption,

"This picture from a Scientology book for volunteer ministers is quite similar to the Confutopia image (seen above); both show Mohammed as one among several famous spiritual leaders throughout history. In this picture, a Scientologist (on the left) towers over (in order, left to right) Mohammed, Jesus, Confucius, Buddha, Lao-Tzu, Zoroaster, Moses and Abraham. (The last figure is not named, but may be Adam.) Higher level Scientology materials explain how Scientology is superior to all other religions (including Islam), because they are nothing more than "engrams" falsely implanted in our minds. "

My goal was to get the Scientologists and the Muslims at each other's throats (a win-win situation for humanity), but I think instead they may team up and have Xenu issue a fatwa and a lawsuit on me for violating religious sensibilities and copyright. They'll also be furious because I'm revealing information that the trainees are not supposed to get until they move up ($$$) to a higher Dianetics level. Hopefully, the Muslims will be mad that their "final prophet" is shown to be inferior to and supplanted by the Scientology dude.

Expect some serious saber-rattling aimed at Taiwan shortly.

Sadly, we seem to have a completely incompetent boob in charge who has handed off foreign policy to Hillary Clinton and hopes never to have to deal with it himself. Clinton, meanwhile, will be pursuing her own agenda, and will use incidents like this one - and worse to come - to help dismantle Obama's Presidency in preparation for her next Presidential run. Don't they have handguns, at least?

In my experience (somewhat dated now) the civilians are unarmed. The Naval officers may have had sidearms but they must have kept them locked up because I never saw any.

CIWS was meant more for anti-air. However, they do have a mode where it can be aimed manually, it would be difficult to do much damage with it, IMO.

Perhaps, I had heard of a change in software that would permit it to be used against small vessals as well (prevent USS Cole style attacks) supplementing any small arms weaponry. The intent would be to not sink but deter. That said, the better idea would be to provide a combatant vessal as close escort.

I can't believe that any USN vessel operating in the waters near China would not at least have small arms available. For one thing, because there is active piracy in the South China Sea.

The difference is the ship is USNS, not USN. A civilian ship tasked with doing military duties previously done by regular Naval vessels.

Think Merchant Marine.

For this ship, who's task is monitoring underwater acoustics (mainly submarine tracking and inteligence gathering, I guess), having a close escort would be detrimental to the mission since it would be emitting noise.

Unfortunately, I think the Navy is making the same mistake they, and the Air Force, made in the early 60's regarding fighters - but not equipping them with guns. Many of the newer ships seem to have fewer and smaller guns - and a heavier dependency on missiles (particularly vertically launched). One of the early lessons learned from the grounding of the USS Port Royal was that the stress / twisting of the hull jammed many of the vertical launch tube hatches closed rendering those missiles unusable.

...Today, Turkey has over 85,000 active mosques, one for every 350 citizens—compared to one hospital for every 60,000 citizens—the highest number per capita in the world and, with 90,000 imams, more imams than doctors or teachers. It has thousands of madrasa-like Imam-Hatip schools and about four thousand more official state-run Qur'an courses, not counting the unofficial Qur'an schools, which may expand the total number tenfold. Spending by the governmental Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet Işleri Başkanlığı) has grown five fold, from 553 trillion Turkish lira in 2002 (approximately US$325 million) to 2.7 quadrillion lira during the first four-and-a-half years of the AKP government; it has a larger budget than eight other ministries combined.[1] The Friday prayer attendance rate in Turkey's mosques exceeds that of Iran's, and religion classes teaching Sunni Islam are compulsory in public schools despite rulings against the practice by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and the Turkish high court (Danıştay).[2] Both Prime Minister Erdoğan and the Diyanet head Ali Bardakoğlu criticized the rulings for failing to consult Islamic scholars.

We can handcuff ourselves all we want. The Chinese will explore for oil.

An estimated 17.7 billion tons of oil and natural gas is not of little economic value. This is estimated to be the 4th largest reserve bed in the world.

The possibility exists that the extreme closeness of the Chinese ship was a (dangerous) decision on the part of the Chinese captain(s), who was probably under orders to conduct surveillance and to harass in some fashion (likely to cover for the noise made by Chinese subs in the area.)

Comment from a small business owner:

With Obama borrowing more money from the Chinese, he is putting us in an ugly position. We are making this play money which is being bought up by the Chinese who in turn feels like they own this country. We are stupid to borrow this money and put it on our children's shoulders just to make Obama and his supporters feel good. This spending is going to out due Bush who started two wars. Now the Chinese will expect us to buy from them so the Walmarts of the world can get bigger and our output manufacturing can dwindle to nothing. The only way to bring this country out of the ruins is manufacturing, You have to export products to compete in the world economy.

This is not a regular Naval vessel, it is a civilian ship tasked with doing what previously had been done by the military,

That irony reminds me of an old story:

A Mexican farmer would cross the border every day, pushing a wheelbarrow.

The border patrol officer became suspicious, and started searching the wheelbarrow, looking for contraband.

This went on every day for 30 years. Finally, the border patrol officer stopped the farmer one last time.

"You know I'm retiring tomorrow," the officer said. "I know you've been smuggling contraband for all these years. I just have to know what it was."

The farmer replied, "wheelbarrows."

Inflation is a mechanism whereby the value of your cash diminishes as a mean to pay off the real value of debt owed by the gov't. In effect, our savings are taxed by the effect of inflation.

Inflation is coming.

Probably. But there are an awful lot of deflationary pressures at work in the marketplace these days, from collapsing home prices to high unemployment through loss of savings. All of these are conspiring to drive prices downward.

A spike in energy costs would tend to work against those pressures, and we may see one this summer as China resumes it's nationwide highway construction and OPEC attempts to restrict supply. But the ongoing, massive printing of money, which typically boosts inflation by devaluing currency, won't have much of an effect as long as demand for goods remains low.

Unfortunately, I think the Navy is making the same mistake they, and the Air Force, made in the early 60's regarding fighters - but not equipping them with guns. Many of the newer ships seem to have fewer and smaller guns - and a heavier dependency on missiles (particularly vertically launched). One of the early lessons learned from the grounding of the USS Port Royal was that the stress / twisting of the hull jammed many of the vertical launch tube hatches closed rendering those missiles unusable.

navies that cannot take on the USN ship for ship will use swarming tactics with small craft, like the incident with Iranian speed boats about a year ago.
In the long run they would get their asses whooped, but in the short run they can inflict heavy damage on any vessel that isn't properly armed to deal with such an attack. And with a President like Obama that might be all they need before they get a surrender notice.
A surface version of the CIWS or Typhoon would be a solution to this problem.

and a different president.

OT, or rather, to reopen a topic that was discussed on an earlier thread:

Legislators in the state of CT wants to force the Catholic church to have a board of lay persons to oversee all financial aspects of the church diocese.

State Legislature sets sights on Roman Catholic Church.

Whether or not you are Catholic, or even religious, this intrusion by the government into a religious organization should be very disturbing to you. this is an issue in CT right now, but I believe this is likely a test situation. If they get away with it, it will come to church near you.

They probably see the RC Church as weak and as a church which people don't like much.

I wonder why they are not doing this to the mosques and muslim organisations?

Perhaps its worth telling the opponents of this that they should as for equal treatment of all faith organisations ...

The characteristics of their new subs are probably some of their most cherished military secrets, and it is highly likely that is exactly why the Impeccable was operating in the area it was.

It was not the first time the ship was harassed by the Chinese. The ship's purpose is two fold, it came map the ocean bottom and study thermal layers. If it finds a sub, it can study it's sound signature while being quite enough to avoid detection. It was probably near a Chinese sub, or they did not want that part of the ocean bottom mapped. I have a friend that is a oceanographer, and part of his job is to map the world ocean floor and the thermal layers where subs can hide.

That is true, and interesting, but... the gov't is aiming to create inflation for the simple reason the alternative, rapid deflation, is even more destructive to the economy. The massive stimulus bill with involves the printing & spending of massive amounts of cash, and the particular tax cuts which will go into either more spending (more inflationary pressure) or savings (to be eating by inflation), is designed to push the economy into inflation.

Sure. Inflation = growth, at least of a sort, and growth is what's needed. Although the usual formulation is growth = inflation; chasing the obverse may not be such a good idea.

But without an external spike in some input - like energy - the deflationary pressures will win until people start spending again, and they aren't going to start spending as long as the threat of unemployment (or the fact of it) hangs over their heads on a daily basis; as long as they can't borrow against home equity that no longer exists; and as long as they can't tap into suddenly non-existent savings.

Inflationary pressure coupled to increased spending is pretty much what everyone wants right now - it would mean an end to the recession. Inflation tied to input increases - increased oil prices, for example - is what no one wants. We had plenty of that during the Carter era, and called it "stagflation," an increase in prices without any increase in growth to accompany it.

I don't think we'll see demand-driven inflation until well into next year, at the earliest. But I wouldn't necessarily mind being wrong.

Yeah. You have to buy what they have nowadays. It seems like it's not been that long ago that you could get Jacketed Hollowpoints (all Hollowpoints should wear a jacket :-) in whatever caliber you needed, cheap. Oh, yeah, it wasn't that long ago.

It is just amazing. I've been trying to find a fluted heavy barrel for an M-4, and nobody, anywhere in the United States has what I'm looking for. I don't even need a barreled upper (though I'd take an A2 if I could find one). There are a few on Gunbroker (A3 uppers, flat-topped with an A2 front sight. I hate that. One or the other, please), but nothing like what I really want. And it looks like there may be a six month backorder for it. Or longer. And at a price I really can't afford.

No President, even the biggest cowboy would risk war with another superpower over this type of harassment. It's been going on with ships and planes for as long as I remember. Unless shots are fired or the like, it's the normal mode of operation. There have been ship to ship and plane collisions in the past.

I wasn't suggesting firing on these Chinese ships (though a few shots across the bow would have sent a message).
I'm saying that the USN needs to be prepared for the possibility that in a conflict with nations like Iran or North Korea, that do not have a powerful surface fleet, the use of swarming tactics to overwhelm US vessels is very plausible, and a solution should be sought (if it hasn't already).

608 DaChew  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 12:42:12pm

Here's the thing: That ship knows where every Chinese submarine in the area is. I'm sure the Chinese know that they can't move a one of them without the US knowing exactly where they are. On the flip side, the Chinese have no idea where the US submarines are in that area or if there are any. The only way they have of figuring it out is to get the US navy concerned enough to send a sonar ping warning. How do they do that? Harrass an unarmed ship. Any warning ping is from a submarine and since they have their own surveilance ship on site, you can immediately figure out where it came from. Our guys obviously didn't fall for it.
The remedy here is to pull some obsolete pile of bolts out of the mothballs, maybe an old destroyer or frigget, and send it along for the patrol. Then, if there's an "accident" it's, "Oh dear, we're so sorry we collided with your ship. You know these old boats are so hard to maneuver you really should be more carefull about how close you approach. If it's any consolation, the heavily reinforced with concrete bow of our ship did suffer a very ugly scratch. Were you able to find both halves of your ship? Ironically, we can help you find them with our sonar ship if you're interested."

You can never have enough guns and ammunition.

Cor Bon is good ammo, but I don't know the specifics of that particular version. It's priceier than I usually buy, but right now it is much more the case that you buy whatever they have. I used to get 230gr Jacketed hollowpoints for about $0.36 a round at Wally World. Now it is about twice that price, if I can find any at all.

And hang up anything other than ground squirrl rounds in 5.56. Nobody has anything around here.

Of course they have goals!

1. Make it fair. Flatten down the rich people, even if it means famine around the world. Fair and flat are more important than continuing our progress on feeding the world and getting them set up in business to support themselves.

2. Cool is everything. Defend your right to party, even if it leaves one too tired to do one's job during the day. Partying should not have consequences.

I know there are more. I know these people.

There's not a thing Obama would be able to do about it. Hillary was just there, and rolled over completely on China's appalling human rights abuses. Why? Well, for one thing, she's Hillary, and the Clintons have received vast sums from China during their political careers. And more pressing, China holds vast amounts of US debt in the form of Treasury Bonds. Dumping large amounts of these on the market would completely undermine the US economy (and that of the rest of the world, as well, but if you're at war you have to make choices.)

I think Avanti said no president would go to war over this issue, and he's right. Bush didn't go to war with the Chinese over the plane incident in the first months of his admin and neither should Obama over this. But Obama will have to respond appropriately. The Chinese are running a "stimulus and response" test of the Obama admin to delicate military/diplomatic incident.

My guess is Obama will fail the test as he's so busy and overwhelmed it's starting to cut into his workout schedule.

LETTER FROM THE BOSS.....

Dear Employee:

As the CEO of this organization, I have resigned myself to the fact
that Barrack Obama is our President and that our taxes and government
fees will increase in a BIG way. To compensate for these increases, our
prices would have to increase by about 10%.

But since we cannot increase our prices right now due to the dismal
state of the economy, we will have to lay off six of our employees
instead. This has really been bothering me, since I believe we are
family here and I didn't know how to choose who would have to go.

So, this is what I did. I walked through our parking lot and found six
'Obama' bumper stickers on our employees' cars and have decided these
folks will be the ones to let go. I can't think of a more fair way to
approach this problem. They voted for change, I gave it to them.
I will see the rest of you at the annual company picnic.

Signed,
The Boss

No. He just completely removed the bit prior to what's shown. Without seeing what provoked the alderman into such action, I'm inclined to consider the possibility that we're seeing a severe distortion of reality here.

All it would take to decide is a quick look at the beginning of the tape. It's absence is extremely suspicious.

Saw a movie referencing Glazer Safety Slugs. Those still available/legal? I know black talons aren't (at least not here)

Winchester redesigned them and gave them a different name. I believe it is now called SXT.

Found this on Wiki:
Winchester bowed to pressure and in 1993 removed the ammunition from public sale for a time,[12] and eventually law enforcement also bowed to the pressure, but at no time was it, nor is it presently, illegal to possess the Black Talon ammunition.

And they are learning that. "World class pussy" is how I termed it. But Avanti said that no president would answer the challenge, and he's flat wrong about that. We've even talked about it earlier (on this thread? I'm rushed. I have a funeral I'm going to, so I've got to leave). Kadaffy Duck and his "Line of Death". Metal Church even wrote a song about it. Cross over the line...

I don't think Pres Obama has any decision lines close to any major powers. Reset is his motto. He wants to start everything over from scratch. His decision lines will probably be the Clooney line in Darfur, The Pitt line in Louisiana, the Penn line in Venezuela, the Hayek line in Mexico. With the latter being the most productive.

I'll say it again - the editing of this clip is very suspicious. Without seeing what was done to provoke Munoz, I can't draw any conclusions. If his reaction was in response to a simple, reasonable question, then he's got issues, big time; if the "victim" walked into his office and took a dump on the floor just prior to the film clip, the reaction would be a lot more reasonable, even restrained.

Back in the day this "provocation" by the Chinese would be met with a sail-by conducted by a US Battleship (want to sink it you're going to have to use a small nuke). Unfortunately our Navy has been whittled down from 600 ships to less than 300 in the last twenty-years and we are seeing many nations become more aggressive towards us (China for example) and portions of the world's chaos impact the sea lanes (piracy off of Somalia). Just two Battleships and support vessels (one Atlantic base/one Pacific base) would put an end to alot of this nonsense (How long does one think a pirate base of operations would last under fire from the guns of the old USS Missouri? How much crap does one think Iran would be giving the West if they knew the US Navy could park two Battleships off their coast and pound them day in and day out with a 26 mile range for naval artillery?) Our Navy keeps us safe and polices the world's seas, does anyone really want the Chinese or Russians filling that void?

There are a lot of "constituents" that are just activist jerks. I don't care if the Alderman picked him up and threw him out on his ass if that was the case. Tape requires more evidence.

1. One is this Alderman known for being a Chicago machine politician?
2. Who is this constituent? What organization does he belong.

If he was just your average Joe trying to step up into local politics and got over excited, the Alderman needed to handel him more carefully. Politics is always going to frustrate someone just starting out in it.

RE: 791 Brookly red

They are, I believe off the top of my head, plans to turn the remaining "mothballed" Iowa Class ships into museums (like the USS Alabama or USS Massachusetts). The problem with this is that it is nearly impossible to bring such a converted ship back onto the line if needed (the guns are effectively "spiked"). Better to leave the a couple in mothballs and refit them if needed than convert them all (but foresight is not Congress' strong suit).

Another letter similar to the one posted above:

To All My Valued Employees,

There have been some rumblings around the office about the future of this company, and more specifically, your job. As you know, the economy has changed for the worse and presents many challenges. However, the good news is this: The economy doesn't pose a threat to your job. What does threaten your job however, is the changing political landscape in this country.

However, let me tell you some little tidbits of fact which might help you decide what is in your best interests.

First, while it is easy to spew rhetoric that casts employers against employees, you have to understand that for every business owner there is a Back Story. This back story is often neglected and overshadowed by what you see and hear. Sure, you see me park my Mercedes outside. You've seen my big home at last years Christmas party. I'm sure; all these flashy icons of luxury conjure up some idealized thoughts about my life.

However, what you don't see is the BACK STORY :

I started this company 28 years ago. At that time, I lived in a 300 square foot studio apartment for 3 years. My entire living apartment was converted into an office so I could put forth 100% effort into building a company, which by the way, would eventually employ you.

My diet consisted of Ramen Pride noodles because every dollar I spent went back into this company. I drove a rusty Toyota Corolla with a defective transmission. I didn't have time to date. Often times, I stayed home on weekends, while my friends went out drinking and partying. In fact, I was married to my business -- hard work, discipline, and sacrifice.

Meanwhile, my friends got jobs. They worked 40 hours a week and made a modest $50K a year and spent every dime they earned. They drove flashy cars and lived in expensive homes and wore fancy designer clothes. Instead of hitting the Nordstrom's for the latest hot fashion item, I was trolling through the discount store extracting any clothing item that didn't look like it was birthed in the 70's. My friends refinanced their mortgages and lived a life of luxury. I, however, did not. I put my time, my money, and my life into a business with a vision that eventually, someday, I too, will be able to afford these luxuries my friends supposedly had.

So, while you physically arrive at the office at 9am, mentally check in at about noon, and then leave at 5pm, I don't. There is no "off" button for me. When you leave the office, you are done and you have a weekend all to yourself. I unfortunately do not have the freedom. I eat, and breathe this company every minute of the day. There is no rest. There is no weekend. There is no happy hour. Every day this business is attached to my hip like a 1 year old special-needs child. You, of course, only see the fruits of that garden -- the nice house, the Mercedes, the vacations... you never realize the Back Story and the sacrifices I've made.

Now, the economy is falling apart and I, the guy that made all the right decisions and saved his money, have to bailout all the people who didn't. The people that overspent their paychecks suddenly feel entitled to the same luxuries that I earned and sacrificed a decade of my life for.

Yes, business ownership has is benefits but the price I've paid is steep and not without wounds.

Unfortunately, the cost of running this business, and employing you, is starting to eclipse the threshold of marginal benefit and let me tell you why:

I am being taxed to death and the government thinks I don't pay enough. I have state taxes. Federal taxes. Property taxes. Sales and use taxes. Payroll taxes. Workers compensation taxes. Unemployment taxes. Taxes on taxes. I have to hire a tax man to manage all these taxes and then guess what? I have to pay taxes for employing him. Government mandates and regulations and all the accounting that goes with it, now occupy most of my time. On Oct 15th, I wrote a check to the US Treasury for $288,000 for quarterly taxes. You know what my "stimulus" check was? Zero. Nada. Zilch.

810 aggieann  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 2:32:46pm

The question I have is this: Who is stimulating the economy? Me, the guy who has provided 14 people good paying jobs and serves over 2,200,000 people per year with a flourishing business? Or, the single mother sitting at home pregnant with her fourth child waiting for her next welfare check? Obviously, government feels the latter is the economic stimulus of this country.

The fact is, if I deducted (Read: Stole) 50% of your paycheck you'd quit and you wouldn't work here. I mean, why should you? That's nuts. Who wants to get rewarded only 50% of their hard work? Well, I agree which is why your job is in jeopardy.

Here is what many of you don't understand ... to stimulate the economy you need to stimulate what runs the economy. Had suddenly government mandated to me that I didn't need to pay taxes, guess what? Instead of depositing that $288,000 into the Washington black-hole, I would have spent it, hired more employees, and generated substantial economic growth. My employees would have enjoyed the wealth of that tax cut in the form of promotions and better salaries. But you can forget it now.

When you have a comatose man on the verge of death, you don't defibrillate and shock his thumb thinking that will bring him back to life, do you? Or, do you defibrillate his heart? Business is at the heart of America and always has been. To restart it, you must stimulate it, not kill it. Suddenly, the power brokers in Washington believe the poor of America are the essential drivers of the American economic engine. Nothing could be further from the truth and this is the type of change you can keep.

So where am I going with all this?

It's quite simple.

If any new taxes are levied on me, or my company, my reaction will be swift and simple. I'll fire you and your coworkers. You can then plead with the government to pay for your mortgage, your SUV, and your child's future. Frankly, it isn't my problem any more.

Then, I will close this company down, move to another country, and retire. You see, I'm done. I'm done with a country that penalizes the productive and gives to the unproductive. My motivation to work and to provide jobs will be destroyed, and with it, will be my citizenship.

So, if you lose your job, it won't be at the hands of the economy; it will be at the hands of a political hurricane that swept through this country, steamrolled the constitution, and will have changed its landscape forever. If that happens, you can find me sitting on a beach, retired, and with no employees to worry about....

Signed, THE BOSS

For those that can't afford armament during these troubling economic times (and this goes double for those harrassed by pirates or who aren't allowed the funding for ammo by their POTUS):

Consider the trebuchet ...

It's a time-honored and tested weapon that, combined with a ballast of stones/boulders, can be set up on the flat platform of any oil ship, etc.  And it sinks small vessels very well, if you can hit them.  Half a dozen on the platform of an oil tanker (or an aircraft carrier with no more jet fuel, or any wide stable floating platform) will keep pirates busy dodging, etc.  Particulars can be found here, here, or especially here...

If the economy tanks and with the scarcity of oil our navy ends up doing the Mad Max/Waterworld thing, this info will be invaluable.

I had an old Navy instructor who told us of a terrible "microwave equipment accident" they experienced when they were blockaded - I don't recall the details of when or where. What I do recall is his description of how their microwave transmitter dish swept the deck of one of the boats as they were challenged. As they came about, the active beam of the energized equipment caught many of the crew of the blockading boat by great surprise, causing them to drop to the deck, writhing in agony as they were essentially "cooked" where they stood.

"Oops. So sorry." ;op

agieann -

It is SO True - AND - the owner violated a "RULE" taught to me by my Depression Era Parents. If you run a business, Never let your employees be so close as to know your exact living standards. If you can afford a Benz, BMW, or Porsche - let them see you driving a Pontiac, a Buick, a Chrysler or a Mercury. Tends to keep COVETOUSNESS to a minimum. Basic maxim is - DON'T PISS OFF THE TROOPS, your survival - and theirs - DEPENDS ON IT. That is all.

Reply to Self -

Remember especially the father of a "next friend." Wealthy man, Millionaire, actually, lived in a somewhat larger than average "Ranch Home" with a double garage.
His extravagance was a Lincoln Mk III. His REAL wealth was elsewhere.

Under Obama, the ships will be armed with strong rhetoric. A new class of warship starting with:
U.S.S Rhetoric
U.S.S. Harsh Language
U.S.S. Furrowed Brow

You forgot:
U.S.S. Unclenched Fist

re: #810 aggieann

I agree fool. We hired 280 people. We r making a good some of money yearly.

I did a lot of work on the design of this vessel when I was a piping designer at Halter Marine in Gulfport, MS. Absolutely the ugliest vessel in the U.S. Navy.
