There's a shock. Unless everyone agrees to do this together, there's no point in imposing this on our economy. We'd be paying for China and India to pollute as much as they want. Hopefully the Senate will kill this.

Man gets 15th DUI; license suspended 78 times
Jul. 1, 2009 07:15 AM
Associated Press
MORRISTOWN, N.J. - A New Jersey man whose driver's license has been suspended 78 times has pleaded guilty to his 15th drunken-driving offense.
Shaun Campbell of East Rutherford told a judge Tuesday that he had been drinking "quite a bit" of beer when he crashed his SUV head-on into a pickup in April. The truck's occupants, a man and his 4-year-old daughter, were not seriously hurt.

The Cap and Trade bill has nothing to do with making an impact on the planet's climate, it is all about impacting negatively the US economy.

I think that is what happened to Battlestar Galactica. The original movie length episode was a masterpiece, and the first two seasons were absolutely killer. Then something changed. Regarding the post on Joe the Plumber:
LGF's a whole different site now.
Not that I sympathize with what Joe said here, but months ago everyone was just bowing down to him for standing up for Israel in operation Cast Lead. And justly so.
Seriously, I understand we wanna show we're not tagging along with the republican party for their sharp turn to the right -- and yeah, I've always admired charles for the work he's put to expose the rise of fascists in Europe and their sympathizers (which took me a while to see the latter are essentially as bad as Palestinian sympathizers), and creationism. But this very post is honestly confusing me. Bush said the same thing and the support for him here wasn't low.
See, why not post Wafa Sultan's latest article about Obama's speech in Cairo towards the "Muslim World"? It's nice that we're disassociating from folks that talk to god, but really, is Joe the Plumber's saying so bad it's worth posting over way scarier shit?
Really, what's going on here?

I actually didn't mind BSG until the last few episodes. That is when it started to lose me. The ending was a train-wreck. I kept tuning in hoping against hope that a good ending would materialize. I was not as irate as I was about the ending of The Sopranos, The Matrix Trilogy, or the Harry Potter books, but I was still quite disappointed.
I think if you are planning on writing a series, have the ending in mind right from the start. If you make shit up as you go, its a recipe for disaster. When you make shit up for 4-5 years, it's next to impossible to straighten it all out at the end.

I never got into Lost back when it started, and it seems far too complex to jump into the middle of, so I'm waiting until it is completed and then I'll borrow the DVDs from someone. That's assuming the ending isn't a train-wreck on that one too.

That still shouldnt have resulted in a pull-it-out-of-your-ass deus ex machina ending. You don't need billions of dollars to write a decent ending, but when you left a thousand unresolved threads and you have 4 hours to tie them all up, you get deus ex machina (or a sudden black screen in the Sopranos case).

Energy is not free though, so the invention of replicators (either Star Trek style or dry nanotech universal assemblers) wont by itself create a post-scarce economy. Land also is not an unlimited resource.

Still, I remember coming in everyday and seeing numerous posts/news that would continuously showcase how severely crazy Islamism and leftists are. Books of this type require multiple readings.
In the Straussian method, read it once, then again slowly and again then once more.
For most books, all of that would not be necessary. This book has so much information and implication that multiple readings are essential.

Well, to get into ubergeek mode and analyze the economy of the United Federation of Planets for a second: They often made comments about "not using money" only be to seeing taking about credits and/or buying things with money in the next episode. My only way of reconciling this (without concluding that the UFP should have been called the USSRP) is that the economy is post-scarce and the "money" is basically credit for replicator time. Energy is free for all practical purposes because of ubiquitous fusion power and room-temp superconductors. Replicators and nanotech can manufacture everything. Land isn't technically scarce because in Star Trek, every damn star and its cousin has an "earth-like" planet or two around it and many of them are uninhabited. Since there is no need to work to survive, and no need to work to keep up with the Joneses, the only real jobs that would exist would be service related or scientific in nature: thus the idea that "everyone works to better themselves and humanity".
Despite Gene Roddenberry's idealism, I think the reality of this would be that we would become fat slobs plugged into VR all day long while robots running replicators would do everything for us. Society would become stagnant.

The best part of Julian Simon's life story was when he made a bet concerning scarcity with Paul Erlich.
In October of 1980, they both agreed on a specified amount of commodities that, when combined at their prices at the time, cost $10,000. They both agreed to wait for 10 years, at which time they would check the combined prices of those same amounts of commodities.
If the commodities got scarcer, as Erlich believed they would, then the price would go up, and Simon would pay Erlich the difference between the final price and $10,000.
If the commodities got more plentiful, as Simon believed they would, then the price would go down, and Erlich would have to pay Simon the difference between $10,000 and the final price.
In October of 1990, Erlich mailed Simon a check for $576.07.

Harry Truman, during his presidency, was once being briefed on the economy. After hearing the economist's analysis, Truman asked, "So, we can expect federal tax reciepts to rise in the coming year?" The economist replied, "It's certainly possible, but on the other hand . . ."
Harry Truman stopped him at that point, turned to one of his cabinet members, and said, "What this country needs is a good one-handed economist."

All that being said, I'm sure the reason that Roddenberry made the UFP as it was, was that he was simply your average American lefty utopian idealist of the "socialism has never been done correctly yet" type. He wasn't a great political or economic thinker.
I know that socialism of the scale that would be required for the UFP with scarcity, would be a nightmare of epic proportions that would make the police states on Cardassia and Romulus look like classical liberal democratic paradises in comparison, so I refused to accept that it was socialism, regardless of whatever Roddenberry was trying to imply. Every time Kirk or Picard said "we don't use money" it was always in time-travel situations, where any "credits" they had would not work as money anyway. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

When I used to eat out a lot I would always get some chicken dish. Chicken this chicken that. Don't like to get chicken now since it doesn't keep for too long and plus I'm kind of burnt out on the chicken. I only really liked the breast meat anyway. In fact, the window of oil availability generally improved over the 20th century. At the end of 1944, "proved reserves" of crude oil were 51 billion barrels worldwide. By 2003, the number had grown to 1.27 trillion barrels of proved reserves. Given the annual rates of consumption in the two years, the world went from a proven supply of under 25 years' worth of oil in 1944 to a supply of about 44 years in 2003. Ugh, I not only redesigned an entire section of my site today, I moved it as well!
Here's the front page of the old version of the site (soon to be little more than a large collection of redirect pages), and here's the front page of the new version of the site.
Besides just adding in the new design, I've done things like taking multi-page lessons and putting them into 1 page with tabs to separate the sections.
Not easy, but it will be rewarding when I finish the redesign!

Yep. I love how all those 50's sci-fi movies are really about Cold War paranoia and fear of nukes.
Like Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Although neither the author of the novel nor the director intended it that way, it's got all these creepy overtones that suggest it's about the fear of Communists among us.

It's still a 2 part problem though, Problem 1 involves getting the Party's head out of it's ass, Problem 2 involves the same operation on voters.
Until and unless people wake up and start paying attention, we will continue to get the governent we (as a nation) seem to deserve.

In order to convince someone of anything you have to get them to listen...I guess that's the most frustrating part. re: #240 mrshankly01
Good for the SEC, and those companies which trade on the NYSE who must follow rules because they will be scrutinized. Or for other western oil companies who follows such rules.
But a great deal of the world's oil fields lay in nations where the national oil company is not beholden to the SEC.
This topic has been written about extensively, and people have sold many books about it (e.g., Matt Simmons)... I'm not claiming to be an expert, but it is clearly a field in which the data quality would not be thought of highly, in the physical sciences with which I am familiar. As such, I take all such estimates with a grain of salt (or more.)
Oil is resting around $70/bbl.... how fast it will go up will depend on economic recovery... I used to post quite a bit oil-related spin-off links, given that I see it of vital national interest, but usually they'd only get a few clicks and fewer dings, which tells me that people don't care about such things until gasoline prices set new highs.
So whenever gasoline does set new highs... the topic will be hot, and I'm sure there will be plenty of posts about that.
For now, back to Sanctuary... the show looks a bit too derivative in story lines, and clearly SyFy is aiming at the youngsters... but that is now a given for that network.

Yes, that would be a start. It's not as if the GOP would lose their votes, for one thing, unless they decide to start their own party. So why let them have a stranglehold on the social issues, or even as much influence as they currently have? They're not going to turn around and vote for Obama in 2012.

That's the real issue right there. No one cares what they believe or want to practice. But when they want to teach theology in the biology classes, smuggle ID into science curricula standards, hang the ten commandments on the walls of public buildings, and tell people who we can and can't sleep with....even other Christians get testy.
They keep yapping that America is a Christian nation, seemingly forgetting that the US is really about religious freedom and personal liberties. I think it pisses a lot of people off who even share their values-- but value religious freedom and the separation of church and state more.
273 | srb1976 Thu, Jul 2, 2009 1:47:02am |
re: #271 iceweasel
Both sides of the "religion" argument tend to blow things WAY out of proportion.....
Christians are not persecuted for their beliefs, and no one with any power tells you who to sleep with.
I agree that we can't let the very religious force their beliefs on others, that freedom of religion includes freedom from religion, but if someone is going to sue every time a christmas tree goes up in a town square, they are NOT helping their own case either.

I'm not convinced there are such things as 'militant atheists', except for that guy who keeps filing SCOTUS cases about the Pledge. Michael Newdow?
Who's a militant atheist? PZ Myers? Hitchens? Dawkins?
As for the War on Christmas stuff, I think that's largely a creation of Bill O'Reilly. I thought the lawsuits over Christmas displays weren't about displays like trees, usually, but creches. And aren't they usually about demanding equal time for other religions?-- as opposed to say, wanting to prohibit all displays?
(I don't really pay attention to the various lawsuits that seem to erupt about this every year though, I admit)

Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.
.....
The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom.... I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in 'A,' 'B,' 'C,' and 'D.' Just who do they think they are?... I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of "conservatism."
I am not for purging the "religious right" from the GOP, or CINOs as I sometimes refer to them (seriously, how can anyone call themselves a conservative when they advocate using the force of gov't to impose their religious views on others) , but I do think they need to understand that they do not own the party, they do not run the party, that they are only one portion of the party. If this particular "hard line" faction could learn that the GOP platform isn't "always about them" this nation would be better off. IMNSO.

re: #280 iceweasel
I think you see what you want to see here. Anyone who believes that the world would be a better place without religion, or that religion is the root cause of all woe in the modern world and throughout history is 'militant' enough for me and that is hardly even a fringe viewpoint among my young, urban peers. It should be recognized as a dangerous world view and it frequently crosses the boundary into bigotry against theists. There aren't any 'militant' atheists because it isn't a fringe view.
As far as 'equal time' for all religions goes, that is an effective ban. 'All religions' isn't just Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The push for 'equal time/room' is one that is demanding the literal inclusion of thousands of syncretic, tribal, animist, et cetera belief systems from across Africa and Asia, the hundreds of traditional near-dead European pagan beliefs, every new age cult (and the list goes on) in addition to mainstream world religions for any inclusion of religious symbols in the public square to be seen as legitimate. It is all or nothing, and all is essentially impossible.
When I was in Elementary School, in the late 80s in a very solid blue state, signs saying Merry Christmas were forbidden. We had projects to decorate the school with our own 'holiday' art, but that couldn't include any specific seasonal holidays or their symbols of either a westernized 'Hallmark' variety or of a more clearly religious variety. That was in the 80s. I can't imagine what it is like now.
I'm sure not every school is like that, but I also doubt my experiences are very rare either depending on what part of the country you are from.

Fiscal responsibility and individual liberty.
Where has the right been on that for the last 8 years? They spent like democrats and when the GOP ignores fiscal responsibility- they pay for it with electoral losses.
Go back and read the threads on the DNC convention. I said then that the democrats were trying to steal fiscal responsibility from us. Of course- you and I know they don't mean it, but that was their message. We simply cannot allow the other party to steal our bread and butter like that. The GOP has no one to blame for that except themselves.

re: #331 scion9
it frequently crosses the boundary into bigotry against theists. There aren't any 'militant' atheists because it isn't a fringe view.
Not according to surveys. This is from 2006, granted, but it shows that atheists are in fact the targets of bigotry and suspicion:
Survey: U.S. trust lowest for atheists
And this is wikipedia for the demographics of atheism (granted, it's wikipedia, but in this case they've got links to the real sources):
A 2004 BBC poll showed the number of people in the US who don't believe in a god to be about 10%.[7] A 2005 Gallup poll showed that a smaller 5% of the US population believed that a god didn't exist.[22] The 2001 ARIS report found that while 29.5 million U.S. Americans (14.1%) describe themselves as "without religion", only 902,000 (0.4%) positively claim to be atheist, with another 991,000 (0.5%) professing agnosticism.[23] The most recent ARIS report, released March 9, 2009, found in 2008, 34.2 million Americans (15.0%) claim no religion. Of which, 1.6% explicitly describe themselves as atheist or agnostic, double the previous 2001 ARIS survey figure. The highest occurrence of "nones", according to the 2008 ARIS report, reside in Vermont, with 34% surveyed. [24]
Again, it really depends what part of the country you're in. I don't think it's such a bad idea to not have signs that say "Merry Christmas" in a public school, but rather "Happy Holidays" or something suitably religion-neutral.

It seems to me that only after the results of the last POTUS election that some want to shine a light on him as being the ultimate 'moderate' or 'centrist' candidate EVAR! This is a good point. If we jettisoned the moral angle and treated all these as spending issues, we'd see a pretty big shakeup in terms of party affiliations, is my guess.
(Again, that's because I think fiscal conservatism would be attractive to many besides conservatives, including many now voting Democrat-- or not voting at all)

re: #339 Iron Fist
I agree, but expanding in those directions is a move Right instead of Left. Rather than moderating on fiscal responsibility, we need to not only demand it, but lead on the issue. Individual liberty will be better protected by an emphasis on smaller, less regulatory government that stays within the boundries drawn by the Constitution. The Bill of Rights is very clear. If Congress was not specifically and explicitly granted the athority to do something, it doesn't have the power to do it. It doesn't mean that whatever "it" is isn't important or good, only that it must be done through other channels (State and local governments) instead of by an imperial Federal Government. This is, again, a Right-wing position (pretty hard right).
I agree. I don't need some group telling me how to cook turkey and stuffing at Thanksgiving. I don't need them to tell me not to put butter on popcorn, eat Chinese food, etc. I think those are more of the hard left who think individuals cannot think for themselves so they will do it for us. Most regulation comes from the left. When people try to tell me how to cook, I shouldn't smoke, I shouldn't drink, I generally tell them to mind their own fucking buisness.

I just have to add as well-- the people flogging the "McCain was the Messiah of Moderation and look what happened!" meme are generally doing it as an excuse for the current GOP strategy of huddling in its bunker and pandering to their hardcore base, rather than looking at itself and figuring out what it can do to actually attract more votes.
This "McCain wuz a moderate" meme is being used to excuse the current GOP strategy of turning its back on trying to appeal to independents, centrists, and moderates.

And it's worth noting that that McCain of 2008 was a LOT less centrist or moderate than the McCain of 2000.
It's also worth noting that he only lost by a 7% margin in the popular vote, despite being outspent several times over by a candidate who was constantly boosted in the media, and despite having Bush's lack of popularity hung around his neck, not to mention a campaign that was, to be polite, lackluster at best.
Primaries are won by appealing to extremes; elections are won by appealing to the middle. Go chasing after the zealots during election season, and you'll find yourself marginalized right out of existence.

re: #353 Iron Fist
Hi Iron Fist, hope you're okay today.
What is your perscription for victory (I will keep in mind that you are neither conservative nor Republican)?
Well, remember I'm also not a Democrat, and I'm moveable in terms of conservatism with a small c. My prescription isn't ideologically motivated.
I don't see any of this, or most of this, coming to pass, but this would be my ideal prescription if I were a polotical consultant/strategist:
Fiscal conservatism is, in my mind, the single biggest issue where the GOP -- or somebody-- could really change the political landscape. So that's what needs to be emphasised most.
I'd agree with you in re: second amendment issues, standing firm on those or moving further right. That's what the TN GOP is doing right now, in that article I'd mentioned to you-- they see it as a winning strategy for 2010, and my guess is they're completely right.
In re: abortion: the GOP should give up the anti-abortion plank. The fact is it's a loser. That debate is over; Roe v Wade will not be overturned. I think the GOP could pick up a lot of people by rebranding itself as the party of women and children: stress ways to reduce or eliminate the need for abortion by increasing access to birth control/education, and brand themselves as the party that really cares about women and their children-- especially by focussing on children's health, education issues, and the like.
Gay marriage-- another losing issue. It's going to happen one day. The GOP doesn't need to support it, for all the reasons you mention-- but they should stop running on opposition to it. the world has changed. Even young evangelicals aren't as worried about gay marriage or gay people in general as people were in the 80's- early 90's.
In short: a move to fiscal conservatism, a general shift to the left or center in issues involving social conservatism, and double down on the second amendment. That'd be my advice. For what it's worth.
I think a party along those lines would be attractive to a helluva lot of people right now.

good lord child, where have you been?
sharmuta - before you go - that piece on using DNA to determine bird feather colors you posted on the spinoffs was very cool, thanks.
Ok, this is a drive by but I MUST tell you about the piece I saw on French TV last night. It was supposedly a 'health' segment' and it focused on Sweden. It was about a newly diagnosed psychiatric disorder called 'persistent refusal disorder' that occurs only in the children of families that have been refused asylum in Sweden. They showed two kids from an Asian family (perhaps Vietnamese?) - a girl about 6 and a boy about 10 sitting on a sofa with their knees drawn up to their faces. Then they showed the mother feeding the son in bed via a tube and a syringe. Unfortunately, the camera work really sucked and what was supposed to look like a tube into the trachea was obviously wrapped around the boy's neck and under his shoulder.
It was the most amazingly blatant piece of propaganda I've ever seen.
Trust the French to air it.

re: #353 Iron Fist
I've explained in detail the positions on which I see that the GOP needs to stand firm or even move right. What is your perscription for victory (I will keep in mind that you are neither conservative nor Republican)? If we are supposed to "moderate" to appeal to the Center, on what issues do we moderate?
We don't even need to moderate on positions as much as we need to be willing to publicly argue with our kooks for the kooks they are.
Michele Bachmann seems to be going over the edge, and may have a long time ago, but there's something fresh about her kookiness. I don't hear any establishment Republicans calling her out, and therefore she is speaking for all of us. On Alex Jones.
I resisted the urge to purge until the 2008 elections were over. I stayed supportive because vote-splitting, second-guessing, and third-partyism are no recipe for success. Well, we lost, and now the third-partyists are eating our lunch, both inside and ouotside the tent. Now, when we are already lying on the mat with three of a ten count, is no time to coach the footwork of party discipline.
We have been handed crushing defeats in rapid series, there are identifiable reasons for it, and the only reasons the Republican party can exercise control over are found within the party. We're not in very good shape to go yelling 'Kook!' at the leftist wierdos if we won't extirpate our own.

Elections are won by holding your base and appealing to the Center. McCain would have lost in a landslide had he not picked Palin. Palin was enormously popular with the base. Her being on the tick reassured many people who, for various reasons, did not trust McCCain.
I've seen plenty of analyses that suggest exactly the opposite - that Palin wound up driving more moderate voters into the Obama camp who otherwise would have stuck with McCain. In the end, I think Palin was a wash and changed nothing.
Sharm is exactly right about the GOP - the Dems have co-opted fiscal responsibility from them as an issue, and they have eight years of drunken-sailor-style spending to point to as evidence, which is going to be a real issue for the GOP to overcome.
The growing power of theocrats within the GOP is another disaster. This really came to a head when Tom DeLay embarked on an odious, hate-filled intrusion into the Schiavo family's personal affairs that sent a cold chill down the spines of anyone caring for disabled or enfeebled family members, or who knew anyone in that position. DeLay and others on the extreme right burned down most of the Conservative platform - the part that says government ought to stay the hell out of it's citizen's personal business - in their zeal and eagerness to lick the asses of the Taliban-esque fundamentalist Christocrats who are increasingly in charge of the GOP. Their vision of America is terrifying, and as far from Conservatism as it is possible to be, even more so than the agendas pursued by off-the-deep-end Leftards like those from ANSWER.

My suggestion? Whichever one woould turn out to be a better reality, simply thank for the flowers. If he protests that it's not him, or otherwise waffles, say you received some without *any* ID info, but assumed it was him. This way, if it's not him, you've given as little information as possible. If it is him, yay.
/Or however your wiring tells you to proceed :-)
I really don't want to hurt my ex's feelings, if it's not from him and I thank him. We're amicable (obviously) but I think there would be residual jealousy.
So I think I'll ask the friend if he sent them. We really are just friends-- he just gets a little sentimental at times. That kind of note is something he could write. He knows I have an ex with the same first name.
If it's my ex though it's kind of weird, in that I haven't talked to him in a couple of months. But he does still send me flowers randomly on holidays sometimes.
I'm really kind of irritated with the florist. All i need them to do is confirm a name and they won't do it.

re: #341 iceweasel
"It tells us about how Americans view religion," said Penny Edgell, an associate sociology professor and the study's lead researcher. "Many Americans seem to believe some kind of religious faith is central to being a good American and a good person."
That data shows no such thing. That is pure spin. I am an atheist, and term myself such. I know few other atheists from my personal assocations that I wouldn't also apply the title anti-theist bigots to as well. Can we get a poll as to who is lower on the sociological totem pole; people who hate Christians or people who hate blacks?
From the article, the common atheist view:
"I know atheists aren't studied that much as a sociological group, but I guess atheists are one of the last groups remaining that it's still socially acceptable to hate," Foley said.
Ridiculous rhetoric much? I've experience practically no real bigotry as an atheist. I am not a victim. How do I avoid such vicious persecution?
I don't unequivocally state, with great zeal and as frequently as possible, such things as, or engage in such behavior as:
1. People who believe in God are clearly delusional and should be treated for mental illness.
2. People who believe in God shouldn't be able to engage in political discourse or hold public office.
3. Pretend to engage in worship of fairies or the Flying Spaghetti Monster in a mocking fashion.
4. Roll my eyes, or derisively chuckle at any espousing of faith.
All of which are quite common. I understand when Christians, and other religious groups are assholes because of perceived group identity, or theology dictates that they take action. Atheism is not my granfalloon. I'm not a member of a group defined by my lack of belief in something that is victimized and discriminated against. The entire concept is ridiculous, yet it is so. Being an 'atheist' has a lot of baggage in America largely because so many self-described atheists are religio-political activists and openly bigoted and want to claim people like me as a member. No thanks.
Why do so many make the distinction between being 'without religion' and being atheist? Are they Deists (although, that qualification is still 'with religion' in my opinion)? I doubt it. They are probably just like me and avoid the title because of not wanting to claim membership in a group. In fact, many of them I'm sure are atheists on the backs of wanting to avoid group affiliation such as organized religions!
I don't think it's such a bad idea to not have signs that say "Merry Christmas" in a public school, but rather "Happy Holidays" or something suitably religion-neutral.
But only in December right? What about all of my Pagan holidays that happen in high Summer? Am I being oppressed because the Happy Holidays sign goes up and comes down specifically around Christmas?
What of the Pledge of Allegiance, Thanksgiving, President's Day, MLK's birthday, Black (American) History Month and other oppressive symbols of nationalism? Some of them are already gone from schools in my area from what I understand.
What harm does a construction paper Menorah or Christmas tree really cause? I can find offense at anything if I really try and protest accordingly. To find offense in a Merry Christmas sign at Christmas, I do really have to try and I'm sure an 8 year old will have to put in even more effort into a good seething.

Completely agree with everything here. I've seen analyses that pinpoint the Schiavo circus as a watershed moment for the GOP. It scared the hell out of real conservatives and many moderates and independents. I think that might have been when I first heard the term "American Taliban" to describe those people.
And for every member of the base who hailed Palin, there was always at least one person driven away from the ticket by her selection.

Perhaps you'll allow me to beg off by saying that in my personal experience, I have never *in America* seen such sneering scorn and intolerance for differing views as from the loud, big-A "Atheists" of both the left (examples to be found reciting poetry about angry anatomy) and the right (examples include Ayn Rand's more strident devotees).
That said, my whole point, and a big part of Scion9's point, is that those people are not hated for their Atheism per se, but for their ill manners.

Right. That's my point, and I think a big part of Scion9's. But like my earlier point about Michele Bachmann's lack of resistance from within the Republican party, those people make people who are perhaps more humble, or at least less strident, about their lack of faith (such as myself, I hope) are getting hit with the same "HEATHEN!" stick. The problem is only partially on the stick-wielders' part.
I cry no tears for "the last group of people it is acceptable to hate" in most cases, because a statement like that is usually your lottery winning ticket to victimhood status.
Some are justified, but until we start seeing Objectivists strung up by their ankles, or coffee-shop Kantians beheaded, statements equating the Taliban and the Christians in America are pure horseshit.

You might like this...I posted it the other day, but I love it. It has application to so many on both the right and the left, and on the atheism/religion issue too:
He took offense.
It started out in college. You know, just experimenting with it. But he liked it. He liked how it made him feel.
For a while it was just recreational -- weekends and parties and rallies and that kind of thing. But soon he was hanging out with some pretty hard-core users, with the kind of people who took offense all the time. They didn't need a reason or an excuse, it was just what they did. It was who they were. Soon he found he couldn't get through the day without it.
Over the years he even learned to grow his own, to take the tiniest seeds of umbrage and nurture them into full-grown pretexts for outrage. The good stuff.
Some of his old friends tried to stage an intervention -- to convince him that he had a problem, that his whole life had become consumed by his addiction.
He didn't respond well. He just took more offense -- right there in front of them.
Addicts, he told them, are always chasing diminishing returns. They're always needing more and stronger drugs to provide an ever-smaller high. But the stuff he was taking didn't work like that. His highs just kept getting stronger and stronger no matter how flimsy or insignificant the reason.
You're not trying to help me, he screamed at them. You're just jealous. And he yelled at them some more, trying to get them to take offense too.
They wouldn't touch it, of course, and just left quietly, looking sad. He took a hit of offense at that and sat back on the couch. They think I've got a problem, he thought, but they're the ones with a problem. Ohh. He inhaled deeply. Yes, yes that's it. His eyelids fluttered. It's because I'm better than them, better than all of them ...
Four days later his landlord called the police, saying there was an offensive smell drifting into the hallway. They found him there on the couch.
The official report from the medical examiner said it was an overdose.

So I skim through the earlier posts and find this.
Wow.
I guess I missed where Christian members of the GOP are decapitating people on camera, hanging people in public, setting IED's at road sides, and the like.

Here's a history of our official response to Tiananmen Square, notice the difference between President Bush and President Clinton.
[Link: www.gwu.edu...]
Great link! here we go:
In the days immediately following the crackdown, U.S. and Chinese officials were already sensitive to how recent events would impact the bilateral relationship. On June 5, President Bush had announced the imposition of a package of sanctions on China, to include "suspension of all government-to-government sales and commercial exports of weapons," and the "suspension of visits between U.S. and Chinese military leaders." Document 32, an embassy cable sent three weeks later, notes that a military official had lodged a formal complaint that "strongly protested recent U.S. military sanctions," and had canceled the planned visits of U.S. military officials. Embassy officials felt this to be a "measured response to U.S. sanctions," indicating that the official "did not adopt a confrontational attitude and emphasized that both sides should take a long-term view of the military relationship." Two days later, on June 29, the State Department prepared "Themes," (Document 33), in support of Undersecretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger and national security adviser Brent Scowcroft, who were to leave the next day on a secret trip to China to meet with Deng Xiaoping. "Themes" provided the framework for the discussions the two emissaries would have with Deng. It focused on the global strategic benefits of the U.S.-PRC relationship for both sides, the impact Chinese "internal affairs" could have on the relationship (characterizing the American people as being "shocked and repelled by much of what they have seen and read about recent events in China"), Bush's view of the importance of the long-term relationship between the US and PRC, and the impact that further repression could have on US relations with China. As Scowcroft later remembered, "The purpose of my trip ... was not negotiations--there was nothing yet to negotiate--but an effort to keep open the lines of communication."6
So, cancellations of visits and suspension of military sales.

That was indeed a large part of President Bush's problem, but I think the biggest factor was his failure to communicate. He allowed the media to frame his presidency and they framed it very poorly.
His tacit acceptance of the characterization of the war in Iraq as a "war of convenience" was what damaged him the most- IMHO.

Some of the guys in the barracks used to go to pharmacies in the towns and buy Robitussin because it still has the narcottic in it over there and drink that by the bottle. I found a club outside the gate that served really good kettles and you didn't need a ration card for those.

The Bob Byron Family
1. Green beans or asparagus (not both) in a casserole with a lid and a serving spoon. If you are making the green beans, please prepare FOUR pounds, if you are making asparagus please prepare FIVE pounds. It is up to you how you wish to prepare them, no soupy sauces, no cheese (you know how Mike is), a light sprinkling of toasted nuts, or pancetta, or some EVOO would be a nice way to jazz them up.
2. A case of beer of your choice (I have Coors Light and Corona) or a bottle of clos du bois chardonnay (you will have to let me know which you will bring prior to 11/22).The Lisa Byron Chesterford Family
1. Lisa as a married woman you are now required to contribute at the adult level. You can bring an hors d’ouvres. A few helpful hints/suggestions. Keep it very light, and non-filling, NO COCKTAIL SAUCE, no beans of any kind. I think your best bet would be a platter of fresh veggies and dip. Not a huge platter mind you (i.e., not the plastic platter from the supermarket). The Amy Misto Family (why do I even bother she will never read this)
1. A pumpkin pie in a pie dish (please use my silver palate recipe) no knife needed.
2. An apple pie in a pie dish, you can use your own recipe, no knife needed.Looking forward to the 28th!
Wow. Control freak much? And I think I sense some issues about the baby sister or whoever who just got married!

Exactly. It's the total opposite of hosting.
I attended a birthday party a relative was having for her 8 year old daughter. (This is someone who reminds me of the letter-writer.)
The moment that will forever stay with me is her screaming at her husband "WHERE'S HER TIARA? FIND HER TIARA!" over and over again when they were getting ready to cut the cake. Because of course the most important thing was making sure she was wearing this piece of junk on her head for the photos, as opposed to enjoying the party or not embarrassing her daughter in front of the other kids or parents.
I sure hope that moment was caught on the videotape.

Does one make the mashed potatoes in batches? I cannot imagine a mixer big enough to deal with that many all at once.
I can do ten pounds of mashed in my stock pot, since I splurged on the cooktop with the burner asst: one tiny, two regular, one FRIKKIN' HUGE.
;)
No mixer; handheld spudinator!
I can't do a huge casserole though ... the oven is not big enough for those full-up restaurant foil pans.
Can you tell I was the Christmas chef/host for the last ten years? I loved it because I didn't have to scrub five children and drive across town ... when I would start the turkey or ham at 5 am, it didn't care I was in my shorts.

Come to think of it, who would be the darling of either party and still be electable? Seems its been a long time since either party had a really great candidate. For the Republicans, who since Reagan? And for the Democrats, who since LBJ (pre-Tet?) Damned if I can think of anyone.
God help us all if LBJ is considered a great candidate. Alot of todays financial problems can be layed directly at his feet with the looting of SS to pay for Medicare and Medicaid and the Great Society.

re: #594 iceweasel
Epitome of a Momzilla.

Sports Nerd Corner:
As we approach the baseball mid-season break, it's time to pick the most dissappointing team in the majors.
I have three nominees in mind, the Cleveland Indians, the New York Mets, and the Chicago Cubs.
The Cubs are a game below .500 and are 3.5 games behind division leader Milwaukee and in 4th place. With their very high payroll and celebrating their 101st year of not winning, nothing less than the World Series was expected. While true believers can say that there is a long way to go and anything can happen, quite frankly the Cubs are bad team. Their defense is poor and they lead the league in leaving runners on base. Actually, that does not do it justice. This season the Cubs have gone to great lengths to find new and interesting ways to avoid scoring runners. they have set new standards in futility in avoiding scoring runners. Let them load the bases with no outs, and I put it at no better than one chance in 3 that they will actually score a run. Manager Piniella is loathed by his players, who are not all that upset about Lou get pounded in the sports media. But they do have some good pitching so they will likely stay at about .500 this year, but well below what they should be doing given their payroll. I look for the Cubs to put on a hot streak late in the year after the division is lost and it does not matter anymore to make it look good.
The New York Mets started the season with great expectations with some big signings in the off season, but now are also one game below .500, 2 games back in third place behind Philadephia. Mananger Manuel has gone to demanding that all the players all ride on a bus to the park and not take individual cabs and such. That must be making a big hit with the prima donnas on that team. Still, they are within striking distance especially of Philly gets some more injuries.
Cleveland is 9 games below .500 and 13 games back, in last place behind even lowly Kansas City. for those not familiar with major league baseball, it is real hard to be worse than Kansas City. Cleveland was picked by many "experts" preseason to win the division going away. Cleveland is so bad that they make other bad teams like the White Sox look good by comparison. The General Manager has already started dumping players for prospects so they have given up on the season as a train wreck and are already building for next year.
All in all, I take Cleveland as the most dissappointing for 2009 to date.

What was that about GREEN jobs and transportation?
Passenger Rail: not so good for the envrionmentA new study by two professors at the University of California, Berkeley argues that when assessing the environmental impacts of a transportation system, one should include life cycle costs of infrastructure, fuel production and supply chains, not just the simple measure of tail pipe emissions. In doing so, the researchers conclude:
We find that total life-cycle energy inputs and greenhouse gas emissions contribute an additional 63% for onroad, 155% for rail, and 31% for air systems over vehicle tailpipe operation. Why is rail so much more harmful to the environment than other modes?
Ranges in passenger occupancy can easily change the relative performance of modes.

Thank you. I know about 2 things, sports and economics.
When I see the garbage guys like Peter Gammons spouts on that channel, I wonder what games they are watching.
By the way, I recently went to a Peoria Chiefs game (Cubs class A affiliate) to scout the Cubs #1 draft choice of a year or so ago, Josh Vitters (now moved to Daytona). who they drafted out of high school. Vitters showed me nothing, I think he has a slow bat and has very little foot speed. Curve balls mystify him at the plate. I see him as a wasted #1 draft pick. You should never spend #1 on a high school kid.
But I did see a 19 year old short stop they have name Junior Lake that I would keep an eye out for. Great foot work and hands in the field, he effortlessly fields the position, has a strong arm, and is hitting .366 at the plate with a very quick bat. He also can hit the breaking ball. I look for this kid to move up fast barring injury.
