Troops wearing riot gear toted automatic weapons and stood guard in the area around Cairo's Tahrir Square early Friday, as anti-government demonstrators promised another day of large protests to demand President Hosni Mubarak's resignation.
Security forces detained some people leaving the square, pointing guns at them and forcing them to lie on the ground. Others blocked the nearby October 6 bridge.
A handful of pro-government protesters cheered as large vans filled with security forces arrived at the square around 6 a.m. (11 p.m. ET). It was unclear whether those inside were members of the military or police.

The Basij need to have their secrecy stripped, their identities published, and their back broken swiftly. Any future uprising needs to preemptively greet them at their doorsteps with an ultimatum, either stand down now or catch an axe to the face. Otherwise it's is likely to fail. Maybe harsh, but they've definitely earned it. There's no dealing with Basij peacefully, they need to be excised like a cancer.

Egypt's defence minister visited Tahrir Square on Friday, the day anti-government protesters were seeking to rally another mass protest against President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule. This was the first visit to the epicentre of protests that have convulsed Egypt by a senior minister since they erupted on Jan. 25.
...
Protesters said Defence Minister Mohamed Hussein Tantawi was talking to the army, who have surrounded the square with tanks and armoured vehicles but who have not prevented demonstrators from gathering there."The army and people are united," the protesters chanted after a protester announced over loudspeakers that the minister was in the square.
A witness said a crowd gathered around the minister, who was also promoted to deputy prime minister in a cabinet reshuffle announced in the wake of the protests.
"Field Marshal Tantawi and leaders of the armed forces are currently in Tahrir Square," the Defence Ministry source told Reuters.
...
"Field Marshal Tantawi is here in the square near the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir talking to the army. The atmosphere is pleasant," one protester on the scene said.

First it was a 5-10 minute back and forth on why our intelligence agencies didn't have a better handle on who the major opposition leaders / future political candidates are (ummm... maybe it's because a repressive regime kept such figures from existing or gathering followings?...) and then there was Andrea Mitchell acting as foreign policy expert expressing incredulity that the administration thinks VP Suleiman would consider meeting with the Muslim Brotherhood (he's already been calling for meetings with them for the last day and a half, and when Egypt's defence minister addressed Tahrir square earlier today he asked once again for MB reps to come meet with the VP).

Al Jazeera speaking to NDP spokesman now. Asking him do you see the popularity of the NDP that won 97% of the parliament?
NDP Spokesman: These are not millions, the millions are the ones who are at home who did not leave their home
NDP Spokesman: Mubarak accepted every single demand of these people, they must go home now
Al Jazeera asked him: "But they demand that he leaves now?" NDP Spokesman: This will need time, how can we reform the constitution so fast?
Al Jazeera: But he has been there for 30 years without reform. NDP Spokesman: We will need time, there have been mistakes, we must admit.
Al Jazeera: You have arrested your senior leaders & frozen their bank accounts like Ahmed Ezz, NDP Spokesman: this is part of the reform!
Al Jazeera: But these are the NDP leaders for ten years. Nothing was done until the youth came to the streets. NDP Spokesman: reform started
NDP Spokesman: Don't you try to make me say bad things about people I know. There are foreign elements that try to destabilise the country

Arab League chief joins Egypt protesters
The Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa has joined his fellow Egyptian protesters in calls to topple the government of President Hosni Mubarak. He recently said he was “at the disposal” of the Egyptian people, adding that he would consider a run for the presidency in a post-Mubarak Egypt. His presence has been welcomed by anti-government demonstrators, who by early afternoon Egypt time was already in the hundreds of thousands, possibly more. Across Egypt the scene was similar, with thousands pouring onto the streets in protests to end 30 years of Mubarak’s reign.

I'd forgotten how stupid discussions on Morning Joe can be.
I like Morning Joe, they do a decent job of having people from all over the political perspective come in. The reason the CIA didn't see this coming is because they're inept. They have had people crawling all over Egypt for 30 years and they missed it. It sort of reminds me of how they didn't know India had a nuclear round until the Indians tested it.
Right now Matthews is on explaining how we're screwing our buddy Mubarak. No wonder he went off on that bender about Beck yesterday.

Huh? 2.53 %.
And no, of course the government can wait and continue to play weasel games. The numbers will only grow, and their chances to get away relatively unscathed diminish.
It is very important to remember that the government is not a democratically elected one, and that that plus all of the measures that have been taken to keep the powers that were in place (emergency laws, no term limits, etc.) were the main reason for the protests to begin with.

Four killed in fights over gas cylinders, many injured in fights over bread
Several areas in Cairo and Giza witnessed an escalating gas crisis because gas cylinders allocated by the Ministry of Petroleum and subsidized by the Ministry of Social Solidarity failed to reach them.
Fights broke out over gas cylinders between citizens gathered in front of government gas distribution warehouses in several areas, including Imbaba, Warraq, Bulaq El-Dakrur, Darb El-Ahmar and Shubra on Thursday.
In Imbaba there was a violent brawl that caused the death of three citizens and the injury of dozens. Dismayed workers closed the warehouse and locked themselves inside, which led to an escalation of the crisis.
In Bulaq El-Dakrour, workers took advantage of the crisis and raised the price of the gas cylinders to LE20. The fights that resulted caused the death of one worker in Lo'ba Street.
Meanwhile, in Darb El-Ahmar and many suburbs in Giza, bread outlets witnessed clashes between citizens and workers that caused many injuries. Citizens brought boxes and plastic bags to stuff with bread.
Popular committees organized people in queues up to ten meters long after clashes broke out over bread.
In Dakahliya the price of subsidized bread rose from 5 piastres to 10 piastres. Three citizens were injured Thursday in fights over bread.

Here in Detroit. Weather forecasters kept yammering about the "Storm of the Millenium" coming to put an end to civilization as we all know it, on Wednesday morning we all woke up to 4 and a half crummy inches. I drove down deserted freeway to work, office was also pretty deserted. Later the forecasters admitted to whipping up a panic frenzy.
We could have gotten hammered like Chicago, but for some reason the storm veered to the north unexpectedly and Detroit only got caught on the edge.
My 4-wheel drive is sweet. I would have never gone out in my previous car.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area, which is still in the icy clutches of an Arctic blast of cold air (and we're supposed to get another brush with a snow/ice/rain event tomorrow - woo/not!), but all eyes are on Cairo and whether Mubarak will finally take an all not too subtle hint to depart from the political stage. The demonstrations have called this a Day of Departure, and anti-Mubarak protesters can only hope that Mubarak decides to exit stage left ASAP.
Will he leave? He's on the record claiming that he would leave, but for the chaos that would ensue. US officials are in contact with Egyptian officials to work out some kind of transition phase allowing Mubarak to leave while putting in place a transition government that would oversee new elections.
Some Egyptians are bridling at what they consider interference in an internal state matter, but if Mubarak is honestly saying he'd leave, then the US efforts aren't meddling but would potentially help keep the violence to a minimum while a transition government is put in place and that existing government officials would not be allowed to run for office or stay beyond their allotted time periods.

The new Interior Secretary (Mahmoud Wagdy) is widely believed to be the driving force behind the hiring, and directing of the thugs who were responsible for the instigation of violence in Cairo, and the attacks on foreign press.
If he's been arrested, this may well be the beginning of the end for Mubarak.

I'm reading conflicting info on this. Not sure if he was arrested or just some aides.
It seems though that the cheering was a rumor that Mubarak had stepped down. Spread like wildfire. Looks like the quelling of the rumor spread like wildfire after.

And now, a report regarding someone who obviously hasn't been paying close enough attention:
Iran's Khamenei praises Egyptian protesters, declares 'Islamic awakening'
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei leads Friday prayers in Tehran on Feb. 4. Khamenei spoke out about Egypt’s antiregime protests Friday, declaring an 'Islamic awakening' across the region that is resulting in the 'irreparable defeat' of American and Israeli influence.
Someone ought to explain to him that Egypt's protests more closely resembles Iran's Green Movement than it does an Islamic uprising.

They are but there is still questions about how they appear to be manipulating it. One of the "protesters" that read a statement talked about outside influences and the influences by jews. People twittering didn't know who this person was even though they were apparently a leader. Earlier people reported that they said people were in the square because foreigners were giving them KFC meals.
People are also twittering that the pictures they are showing of the protest make it look a lot smaller then it is.

The 6th Circuit Federal Court of Appeals just smacked down yet another (ex-)Judge Roy Moore wannabe who was hanging copies of the Ten Commandments in his courtroom, and attempting to defend it by stating that "God's Law trumps the US Constitution".
Oh, this is the second time he's been sanctioned.
Judge Shalt Not Meld Church and State
Judge Eric Clay, writing for the court, said that DeWeese's "purported secular purpose" was a "sham," concluding the display violated the Establishment Clause of the Constitution.
"Although defendant attempts to veil his religious purpose by casting his religious advocacy in philosophical terms ... replacing the word religion with the word philosophy does not mask the religious nature of defendant's purpose," Clay wrote.
The court also rejected DeWeese's argument that the poster was secular in nature.
"While the poster effectively links the Ten Commandments and secular principles," the judges found that it did not send a secular message.
"By stating that the 'moral absolutes' of 'the God of the Bible' are the 'fixed moral standards for restoring the moral fabric of this nation,' that should triumph in the 'conflict of legal and moral philosophies raging in the United States,' the poster 'specifically links religion and civil government,'" the ruling states, quoting its earlier ruling on the case.

I'm not taking a side... I am asking.
I can't give you a solid answer, but I will say, apples and oranges. The United States votes in a new dude every four years, with no dude to exceed eight. Change is always coming. We also have a strong legislature, similarly elected, with the means to remove a president from office.
Egypt has had the same dude and no recourse for the past three decades. Their means of effecting a transition, and the perspective they bring to it--no real comparison.

Blog post from a photo journalist about an attack the other night.
[Link: www.andrewburtonphoto.com...]
/
Within seconds, anti-Mubarak protestors saw me try to leave the crowd – they grabbed me and encouraged me to continue to walk towards to fighting. Pro-Mubarak supporters got very angry over this, and fighting broke out around me immediately.
Very suddenly 50% of the crowd started attacking me – kicking, punching and slapping. The other 50% (anti-Mubarak supporters) quickly encircled me to protect me. Five or six guys surrounded me and took many more blows than i did. We tried to move away, out of the crowd, but the crowd had gotten very large, very quickly – we only moved about 100 yards, at best. Movement was slow and clunky, we were stumbling through the people attacking us – forcing our way through the crowd. We were headed towards an Egyptian army tank and when we hit the it, the men positioned me with my back to the tank, squatting down. At this point, I was pinned. People continued to kick, punch and grab at cameras. Soldiers standing on top of the tank were waving pistols and screaming. I was fucking terrified. My shirt was ripped from my back, hands went into my pockets (the most they got was my CF cards), the men protecting me were looking at me screaming me, ‘you are safe, we are here for you, we will get you out of this.”
I only escaped when the soldiers on top of the tank literally ripped me out of the crowd, lifting me by the armpits. I was dumped head first inside the tank. My shit – cameras, cell phone, notepad – everything went flying out of my pockets as I landed amongst the soldiers. As I got myself turned around, I found myself surrounded by 14 Egyptian soldiers – young men my age, smiling at me. They scooted around, made a place for me to sit – helped me gather my shit. Everything was quiet – the transition from an angry mob scene to a calm but cramped interior tank happened very, very quickly. The soldiers were joking, laughing, making fun of me, they didn’t seem to care too much about what was going on outside. In the following hours that I sat inside the tank, we attempted to speak through broken english and ate food together. I tried to ask them why I was attacked – at the time I thought I had made a beginners mistake. They didn’t understand my question, and I only found out later how many other journalists were also attacked. I stayed there for two and a half hours talking with them while the protests continued. I didn’t know what to do – I was shaken and scared, knew that I didn’t want to head back outside alone, and the soldiers seemed to have no problem with me sitting there until things quieted down. Later, around 7PM, when things had calmed down a bit (in the immediate vicinity – the fighting raged on through the night), a general escorted me out and got me in a cab back to my hotel.
I dont know what happened to the men that protected me. I owe them my life, or something close to it. I don’t know what would have happened to me without them. This is my first time in a situation like this. I was incredibly lucky. Outside, numerous journalists, photographers and friends were beaten, had their cameras smashed, hurt badly. I got very lucky, very fucking lucky.

February 3rd, 2011 at 11:38 amIn 1973 the Oil Embargo occurred and gas station lines occurred in the US. For a short time it created a panic. The politicians at the time (puppets then as puppets now) jumped up and down and yelled …. “we must reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and create alternate energy sources” … just like a broken record. Just under 40 years later, we remain in the same boat. Why, because oil is a major profit for the elite run corp/industrial complex, and they want to keep it that way. Why was gasoline 4 bucks a gallon in 2008 just before the collapse? It wasn’t demand, it was wall street bankers at Goldman Sachs and other banks buying up gasoline futures and making a killing in profits while the rest of us paid the price. The prices dropped immediately after the collapse, again not because of demand, but because the wall street banker human shit was otherwise distracted. Until we remove the cancer that runs the world behind the scenes, Globalist Zionist profit greed ridden human waste, that will put a dollar in their pocket while letting 1 million people die somewhere else on the planet, all of these trends will continue. F the globalist NWO Bilderberg CFR wall street banker and central banker human waste, the greatest criminals on the planet, the deaths of millions via wars, financial collapses, other, lay at their hands. Myanmar/Burma's junta has chosen new president, but the junta's top dog is still pulling the strings for the moment at least:
Prime Minister Thein Sein was chosen on Friday to become president in Myanmar's new civilian-led political set-up, nominally at least becoming head of state as the country's junta steps down. The big question is: what will junta supremo Than Shwe do now?
IS THAN SHWE SIMPLY STEPPING ASIDE?
Unlikely. The presidency is probably something the military strongman never really wanted. The rise of one of his most trusted associates in a choreographed parliamentary vote suggests Than Shwe will remain in charge, but behind the scenes.
The reclusive junta boss is not suited to the public role required of a president. He rarely attends public events or gives speeches and has not spoken to the media in years. His state visits have been restricted to neighboring India and China.
IS IT A SURPRISE THAN SHWE DIDN'T BECOME PRESIDENT?
To a certain extent, yes. Many experts say the 78-year-old Than Shwe is seriously worried about what might happen to him and his family, and they assumed he was reluctant to put power into the hands of someone else, even a loyalist.
Than Shwe has made many enemies and he knows it. He's not too bothered about Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi or the public. His real fear is probably people in the military he has crossed swords with, demoting them or forcing them into retirement.

Somewhat off topic, but Wikipedia had a hilarious summary of Finland's Gun Laws:
Possession of destructive devices such as automatic weapons, rocket and grenade launchers, breech loading cannons, artillery rockets, or missile systems is generally not permitted. The Finnish Ministry of the Interior has discretion to license such devices to collectors, for motion picture production or exhibition use.

They usually do it when the plane is landing. It's flying low and slow.
Here in Toronto we had several planes 'lased' a few years ago. They. as I recall, had to abort and come around again when the pilot's vision cleared. Landing a plane when you can't see anything, including the instrument panel, is not a good idea.

I imagine if you can get a clear trajectory to the cockpit. Low flying aircraft on approach or take-off. Surrounding higher ground. From the tops of buildings, etc.
And a variation on this (using a high-powered light instead of a laser) is a plot point in a Tom Clancy novel. _Debt of Honor_ if I recall correctly.

Honestly? I don't understand how someone can hit something moving that fast that is that far away from below and blind a pilot.
Someone 'splain?
Also.....normal light is a wave emanating outward from the source so the power decreases as a square function of the radius from the source and consequently one has to be very close to a regular light source to have ocular damage. However laser light is coherent meaning that the energy does not spread out in a normal wave pattern (like ripples on a pond) but only in one narrow direction. So the square of the distance decrease in power does not apply and the beam carries nearly its source wattage for quite a distance.

Hmmm.
Nobody questions the laws that make it illegal to point, let alone fire a gun at a person. But then for better or worse those are state laws. A fast google search got nothing on that kind of gun law apart from pointing a gun at a Federal worker.
I can see the validity of the argument for the laser law being federal, as those planes cross all kinds of airspace, so are governed by the Feds. Regulations, safety etc. I'm pretty sure it's illegal to point a gun at an airliner, but just impossible to enforce. Who would ever know?

It would get complicated if we went down Paul's path when we're dealing with state boundaries at close proximity to airports. According to the FAA there has been 2,836 incidents reported between 2009 and 2010. This new law falls under FAA regulations and is part of FAA appropriations. This impacts not only airliners but general aviation, helicopters, etc. Makes sense that it falls under FAA rules.

Oh, the question is not how do lasers keep the power. I'm wondering how do you aim it and hit a pilot in the eyes who is four thousand (or more) feet in the air moving at 500 mph?
Windshield on an airplane is on top, right?
There's gonna be a very logical simple answer... but for the life of me, I can't figure it out.

Still moving pretty damn fast. One of the reasons why (I thought) hand held rocket launchers are not much a threat while the plane is airborne.

Oh yes, I agree. Airliners and air travel has been a federal responsibility since the early days. I think Glenn Curtis got the very first pilots license.
