Via my campaign contributions, I get on all sorts of Democratic mailing lists.

This morning (I guess Monday evening for you folks) my in-box is piling up with subject headers basically asking me if I would support impeachment.

It feels to me like the Democratic Party is changing course.

Iā€™m too lazy to look now, but it was either a tweet or RT from Jeet Heer about the $28billion to farmers: ā€œSo far, no Tea Party protests.ā€ Sums it up.

Seven freshman Democrats: These allegations are a threat to all we have sworn to protect

Reps. Gil Cisneros of California, Jason Crow of Colorado, Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania, Elaine Luria of Virginia, Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey, Elissa Slotkin of Michigan and Abigail Spanberger of Virginia are all freshman Democrats.

We have devoted our lives to the service and security of our country, and throughout our careers, we have sworn oaths to defend the Constitution of the United States many times over. Now, we join as a unified group to uphold that oath as we enter uncharted waters and face unprecedented allegations against President Trump.

This flagrant disregard for the law cannot stand. To uphold and defend our Constitution, Congress must determine whether the president was indeed willing to use his power and withhold security assistance funds to persuade a foreign country to assist him in an upcoming election.

If these allegations are true, we believe these actions represent an impeachable offense. We do not arrive at this conclusion lightly, and we call on our colleagues in Congress to consider the use of all congressional authorities available to us, including the power of ā€œinherent contemptā€ and impeachment hearings, to address these new allegations, find the truth and protect our national security.

The DNCā€™s new debate requirements for November:

The Democratic National Committee on Monday announced new rules requiring higher polling numbers and fundraising minimums to participate in Novemberā€™s presidential primary debate.

While candidates needed to reach only 2 percent support in four DNC-approved polls to be invited on the debate stage in September and October, now candidates must reach 3 percent in four polls or 5 percent in two single-state polls in the early primary states (Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada).

The number of required unique donors has also increased from 130,000 to 165,000.

Keep in mind as we proceed forward and the gaslighting and othering of kids concerned about climate change occurs, that the right thinks Ben Shapiro was a teenage political genius and continue to pay him to mouth things.

Because everything they accuse these kids of, they are consistently party to within their own ranks. They do not value consistency or veracity. Everythingā€™s just bad faith positioning of rhetoric.

DT and the citizenship question have scared the ā€œhard to count,ā€ and theyā€™ll need to be reassured. Some group in your area will likely be working on getting out the vote getting census forms filled out. This will get federal money distributed more fairly, as well as congressional districts.

The one guy who could, and did, was President Obama. Trump tore it up because nothing holds value to him if he canā€™t get credit for it.

Also, because heā€™s a racist piece of shit.

Yes, Trump is a racist and his promotion of birtherism arose from that, but his efforts to undo every accomplishment of Obama is traced to a more personal animosity: Obamaā€™s mocking him at the 2011 WHCD. The UKā€™s Supreme Court has just unanimously ruled that PM Boris Johnsonā€™s prorogation of Parliament is subject to judicial review and is further more unlawful as it was intended to prevent the Parliament from carrying out its normal business.

122
Dr Lizardo  Sep 24, 2019 • 2:45:19am

Unlawful, void and with no effect.

Parliament HAS NOT been prorogued. The Parliament is to meet immediately.

Alephnaught  Sep 24, 2019 • 3:05:26am

Just looking at the summary of the judgement, and itā€™s pretty unambiguous.

No justification for taking action with such an extreme effect has been put before the court. The only evidence of why it was taken is the memorandum from Nikki da Costa of 15th August. This explains why holding the Queenā€™s Speech to open a new session of Parliament on 14th October would be desirable. It does not explain why it was necessary to bring Parliamentary business to a halt for five weeks before that, when the normal period necessary to prepare for the Queenā€™s Speech is four to six days. It does not discuss the difference between prorogation and recess. It does not discuss the impact of prorogation on the special procedures for scrutinising the delegated legislation necessary to achieve an orderly withdrawal from the European Union, with or without a withdrawal agreement, on 31st October. It does not discuss what Parliamentary time would be needed to secure Parliamentary approval for any new withdrawal agreement, as required by section 13 of the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018.

The Court is bound to conclude, therefore, that the decision to advise Her Majesty to prorogue Parliament was unlawful because it had the effect of frustrating or preventing the ability of Parliament to carry out its constitutional functions without reasonable justification.

[ā€¦]

This Court has already concluded that the Prime Ministerā€™s advice to Her Majesty was unlawful, void and of no effect. This means that the Order in Council to which it led was also unlawful, void and of no effect and should be quashed. This means that when the Royal Commissioners walked into the House of Lords it was as if they walked in with a blank sheet of paper. The prorogation was also void and of no effect. Parliament has not been prorogued. This is the unanimous judgment of all 11 Justices.

When the judges say that the governmentā€™s advice to the Queen was unlawful twice, you know itā€™s serious. Both the SNP and Jeremy Corbyn are already calling for Boris Johnson to resign.

Plaid Cymru, the Welsh nationalist party, is now calling on PM Johnson to resign immediately in the wake of the UK Supreme Courtā€™s unanimous ruling.

The supreme court has delivered a damming and unanimous verdict. Boris Johnson has broken the law for undermining the basic principles of democracy. The prime minister has shown himself to be no better than a tin-pot dictator, shutting down democracy to avoid scrutiny.

There is no question, the prime minister must resign immediately and a crash out Brexit stopped once and for all.

In his short time in office Boris Johnson has proven himself to be a deeply dangerous and anti-democratic leader, with no respect for the rule of law. It would be a complete affront to civilised society if the prime minister did not resign after this historic ruling.

Some predictions about the Ukraine scheme:

The root idea is very likely to have come from the KGB, and itā€™s going to be found that not only was it an attempt to smear the Biden family, the KGB also hoped it would weaken the anti-Russian politicians in Ukraine.

Giuliani was too dumb a person to coordinate the scheme. If there was a legitimate worry about the Bidens and corruption, the complaint would have gone through official channels. But it didnā€™t and Giuliani was sent as a back-channel communication. Instead of doing what he asked straight away, the Ukrainians thought this was a dodgy deal and so said no initially. Instead of keeping working on the scheme, Giuliani reported to Trump that he couldnā€™t persuade them to do the deal.

Trump, being the king of all deal-making, thought that he could have a quick call to change the Ukrainianā€™s minds. There will have been a couple of calls before the dates we know about, where Trump tried to pressure the Ukrainians and they still said no.

After that Trump suspended the aid that was planned for Ukraine. It was only then that the Ukrainians started to realise that the requests for ā€˜an investigationā€™ werenā€™t going to go away, and they privately committed to doing some action that they wouldnā€™t have otherwise done.

There are many people in the Whitehouse and in Ukraine who know many details of this story. Maybe each of them donā€™t know all of the details, but there are enough people that know enough criminal/impeachable events that occurred that any investigation is going to find the details pretty quickly.

Whether that actually leads to something happening is a different question.

Finally, I bet the KGB handlers who set this whole scheme up are staring in disbelief at how fucking dumb their assets are. I can imagine the guy who planned this whole operation banging his head on his desk ā€œWhy did the President discuss this on an official call? Why didnā€™t he leave the negotiation to a representative.ā€.

Last Thursdayism (alternately Last Tuesdayism or Last Wednesdayism) is the idea that the universe was created last Thursday, but with the physical appearance of being billions of years old. Under Last Thursdayism, books, fossils, light already on the way from distant stars, and literally everything (including your memories of the time before last Thursday) were all formed at the time of creation (last Thursday) in a state such that they appear much older.

If the world was created 6000 years ago with the appearance of being made billions of years ago, what is there to stop us from claiming it was made Last Thursday? The debate on whether Last Thursdayism is true has raged ever since last Thursday.

Last Thursdayism is an unfalsifiable hypothesis; Itā€™s an Omphalos hypothesis I.e the world was created recently. Itā€™s possible to dismiss this using Occamā€™s razor. The idea that world was made Last Thursday is hard to believe as we perceive time to be like a river. One action follows another and we can recall the past. Once we get to next week Thursday, will the same question be posed? That is a troubling thought. It troubling because it makes the past seem like it never happened. The memories, the people in our lives, and history itself would be lies.

If history were a lie, the holocaust never happened, USA didnā€™t drop any atomic bombs on Japan and other key events never happened. The judicial system would fail as criminals who are incarcerated can get out of jail saying that since the crime that is perceived to have been purported never actually happened, they couldnā€™t be charged.

So it would be terrifying if it were true. The repercussions would be so bad that ignorance would be better.

For all of the talk about the Ukraine, it seems like the one huge story that has yet to really get unwound and discussed fully is how and why the GOP suddenly revised their GOP platform at the RNC to change their support for Ukraine and make it far more pro-Russian.

This episode has never been fully or properly investigated. Trumpists got the GOP to change the platform on the fly, and no one seems to notice or care? You betcha that this is all part of a long running con with Trumpworld and Russian oligarchs trying to pressure Ukraine into doing Russiaā€™s bidding, and then getting Ukraine to go after Trump political enemies.

Brexit: Boris Johnson defeated by UK Supreme Court - but he could still emerge as a winner

[ā€¦]

But what no one seems to have considered is that Johnson is an explicitly populist politician. He will live to whiff-whaff another day. His whole approach to gaining the keys to No.10 has revolved around constantly responding to - and to some extent amplifying - the populist signal, not least over Brexit. In this context, a Supreme Court defeat risks simply playing into Johnsonā€™s gameplan. It will not stop Brexit. But for Johnson and, especially for his shady apparatchiks, it will be yet another example of ā€œthemā€ (that is, the elite, the experts, the untouchables that wield power without responsibility) against ā€œusā€ (the Great British public).

The rules of political engagement have already been altered almost beyond recognition, and Johnsonā€™s entire brand is based on being an unconventional politician.

The great risk of the Supreme Court ruling is that it will add fuel to a populist fire that is already raging about the need for a strong leader. Indeed, one of the few similarities between all the different manifestations of populism that have emerged around the world over the past decade is the existence of a charismatic and strong leader who can mobilise the masses and manipulate how dominant issues are framed. In the UK it is Johnson who seems to be staking the greatest claim to this role - and his popularity amongst Conservative Party members provides a powerful platform.

Trumpā€™s Environmental Protection Agency has rolled back the tougher standards California is fighting to keep, spurring a lawsuit from California and 23 other states on Friday.

In a letter to California leaders, EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler told the state owes the agency an urgent turnaround on a backlog of air pollution plans.

ā€œSince the 1970s, California has failed to carry out its most basic tasks under the Clean Air Act. California has the worst air quality in the United States,ā€ Wheeler wrote, saying the state has 34 million resident breathing air that does not meet National Ambient Air Quality standards.

Donā€™t assume that the courts will side with California on this. Trump and McConnell have helped refashion the courts with right wing extremists in a way not seen in generations - so they may take the position that CA canā€™t enact more stringent air quality and fuel economy standards to try and improve air quality in CA (and the rest of the US states key off the CA standards).

Heck, I remember watching The Price Is Right for years and every time they said that ā€œA NEW CAR!ā€ one of the specs was always CA emissions standards, which was a thing because CA needed to go more rigorous on trying to reduce pollution.

Trumpā€™s out to destroy his political enemies (real and perceived) and will do what he can to punish the states that didnā€™t support him. CA is tops on that list.

Never mind that the CA economy by itself could push the nation into a recession if things go sour, and that the state is a net giver to the federal revenue (it gets less back than it gives).

Trump and the GOP donā€™t care about the science or the logic. Theyā€™re out to punish their enemies who merely want to hold Trump accountable for criminal acts.

One of the key elements in Trumpā€™s belief that he can get away with everything ā€” every crime, every violation of norms ā€” is that his life experience proved that to him. Roy Cohn was his teacher and Trump was an excellent student. People with money(or sufficient credit) get away with actions that lead to prison for those who lack assets. Tax evasion ā€” outright fraud ā€” no problem. In Trumpā€™s case, laundering money, extortion, bribery, assaulting women ā€” no problem. He should have been brought down years ago; itā€™s not just the MSM that failed us in 2016; itā€™s the entire justice system that is rotten to its core ā€” Epstein is the poster child for how the system repeatedly fails us

and he ran as the anti-politician, the outsider, the self-made man free of need to pander to donors, etc., and sold it successfully to the media and the public.

His lack of any record of public service was seen as a plus, whereas for all others, it was just a source of dirt to dig up on them.

That approach allowed and allows him to get away with the most egregious excesses, starting with his lack of tax returns, that would have derailed the career of any other professional politician.

You canā€™t suppress info if youā€™re not reporting on him. He was a nonentity politically for most of his life, and he was more of a fixture on the entertainment pages than anything else. No one ever really dug into his financial dealings, but now that people are, you see just how bad things truly are.

Itā€™s also a reminder that NYS and IRS tax officials have had a hard time trying to go through his tax returns for years because heā€™s got all these close corporations and trying to unwind all those positions takes time and effort. Weā€™re starting to see actual time and effort spent on all this.

re: #260 Hecubaā€™s daughter

As I said above, the real problem is that he should probably have been thrown in prison in the 1990ā€™s for his financial dealings, but somehow these criminals get away with their crimes over and over again. Think of how long it took to get Bernie Madoff, even though he was reported to the SEC years earlier but they ignored the allegations. Financial criminals (not Trump ā€” but those who did his books) are cleverer than those who work as investigators.

You raise an interesting point.

I very much agree with you that we would have been much better off now, had laws been better enforced wrt to Trump (and his sister and his father).

I admit that I am not well versed in the policy decisions and trade-offs on why the financial laws were not enforced in the last 40 years.

Some things I do see are:

1. The issue of the fox guarding the henhouse (both financial institutions and financial sector people). And,

2. The deliberate and successful efforts to remove protections and guardrails installed after the Great Depression.

This is bugnuts.

Tulsi somehow manages to make the next round of debates, but Booker is looking to shut it down if he doesnā€™t get to his fundraising goal.

She has no business anywhere in this race.

Meanwhile, Bidenā€™s set to come out with a statement supportive of impeachment if Trump doesnā€™t comply with congressional requests (we are so far past that point that heā€™s playing catch up to last weekā€™s misconduct).

The laws are fixed to benefit the wealthy and those in power. Criminal laws and enforcement of those laws requires more effort and expertise than someone who is trying to find someone who robbed a bank. You can steal a billion dollars as a white collar criminal and see less time in jail than someone who robs someone else of $100.

ā€œHow Has This Bastard Not Been Impeached Yet?ā€ Nixon Asks in Hell
(posted in its entirety)

HELL (The Borowitz Report)ā€”The former President Richard M. Nixon became the latest person to call for Donald J. Trumpā€™s impeachment on Monday, holding an extraordinary press conference in Hell to do so.

ā€œI see the news every day and I shake my head,ā€ Nixon said, the infernal flames of Hades licking his jowls. ā€œHow has this bastard not been impeached yet?ā€

The former President said that the Watergate scandal, which led to his resignation from office, was ā€œlike jaywalkingā€ compared to Trumpā€™s interactions with a foreign government.

ā€œIā€™ll admit that my subversion of democracy wasnā€™t ideal, but this Ukrainian business is some next-level shit,ā€ Nixon said.

Though clearly aggrieved that Trump has thus far received more favorable treatment from Congress than he did, he showed some grudging admiration for the current occupant of the White House. ā€œIf heā€™s not impeached, heā€™s the luckiest bastard in the world, and Iā€™ll tell him that when he gets down here,ā€ Nixon said.

Already bracing for a tropical system in the next 24 hours, Puerto Rico was hit by an earthquake late Monday.

The earthquake measured a magnitude of 6.0, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and was located about 46 miles northwest of the island. There is no tsunami threat for the island, or the neighboring U.S. Virgin Islands.

There were at least seven aftershocks over 4.0 magnitude in the hour following the initial quake, which struck at 11:24 p.m. An aftershock of 5.1 was measured just nine minutes after the initial quake, according to the National Weather Service.

An official for the islandā€™s Office of Emergency Management told ABC News that the agencyā€™s regional offices are in contact with municipalities to get an early report on any damage. At the moment, there are no reports of damage or injuries.

*cue McLaughlin Group theme*

QUESTION ONE: Is Hunter Biden the President of the United States? NO!

QUESTION TWO: Has Hunter Biden appointed dangerously unqualified people to head Cabinet agencies? NO!

QUESTION THREE: Has Hunter Biden then replaced departing agency heads with ā€œactingā€ replacements as a means to circumvent congressional oversight? NO!

QUESTION FOUR: Has Hunter Biden hollowed out this nationā€™s national security apparatus for personal benefit and the benefit of our geopolitical adversaries? NO!

QUESTION FIVE: Does Hunter Biden violate the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution on a daily basis? NO!

QUESTION SIX: Has Hunter Biden ordered the implementation of a draconian immigration policy which confines children in cages in internment camps on our southern border? NO!

QUESTION SIX: On a scale of one to ten with ten representing absolute metaphysical certitude and one representing stygian doubt and despair, is Hugh Hewitt a desperate flack throwing this out as distraction to save a criminally corrupt mobster-in-chief? The correct answer is INFINITY PLUS OOONE!

Nope. No sarcasm allowed there, because thatā€™s precisely what heā€™s done each time thereā€™s been something really bad about Trump. He tried that as Muellerā€™s report was about to drop (or Barr wrote his 4 page bulkshit summation), etc.

Hannity does what he always does - produce agitprop protecting a corrupt GOP and Trumpworld.
