Via my campaign contributions, I get on all sorts of Democratic mailing lists.
This morning (I guess Monday evening for you folks) my in-box is piling up with subject headers basically asking me if I would support impeachment.
It feels to me like the Democratic Party is changing course.
Iām too lazy to look now, but it was either a tweet or RT from Jeet Heer about the $28billion to farmers: āSo far, no Tea Party protests.ā Sums it up.
Seven freshman Democrats: These allegations are a threat to all we have sworn to protect
Reps. Gil Cisneros of California, Jason Crow of Colorado, Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania, Elaine Luria of Virginia, Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey, Elissa Slotkin of Michigan and Abigail Spanberger of Virginia are all freshman Democrats.
We have devoted our lives to the service and security of our country, and throughout our careers, we have sworn oaths to defend the Constitution of the United States many times over. Now, we join as a unified group to uphold that oath as we enter uncharted waters and face unprecedented allegations against President Trump.
This flagrant disregard for the law cannot stand. To uphold and defend our Constitution, Congress must determine whether the president was indeed willing to use his power and withhold security assistance funds to persuade a foreign country to assist him in an upcoming election.
If these allegations are true, we believe these actions represent an impeachable offense. We do not arrive at this conclusion lightly, and we call on our colleagues in Congress to consider the use of all congressional authorities available to us, including the power of āinherent contemptā and impeachment hearings, to address these new allegations, find the truth and protect our national security.

The DNCās new debate requirements for November:
The Democratic National Committee on Monday announced new rules requiring higher polling numbers and fundraising minimums to participate in Novemberās presidential primary debate.
While candidates needed to reach only 2 percent support in four DNC-approved polls to be invited on the debate stage in September and October, now candidates must reach 3 percent in four polls or 5 percent in two single-state polls in the early primary states (Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada).
The number of required unique donors has also increased from 130,000 to 165,000.
Also, TPM is having a membership drive.

ā John Stevens (@johnestevens) September 24, 2019
Just looking at the summary of the judgement, and itās pretty unambiguous.
No justification for taking action with such an extreme effect has been put before the court. The only evidence of why it was taken is the memorandum from Nikki da Costa of 15th August. This explains why holding the Queenās Speech to open a new session of Parliament on 14th October would be desirable. It does not explain why it was necessary to bring Parliamentary business to a halt for five weeks before that, when the normal period necessary to prepare for the Queenās Speech is four to six days. It does not discuss the difference between prorogation and recess. It does not discuss the impact of prorogation on the special procedures for scrutinising the delegated legislation necessary to achieve an orderly withdrawal from the European Union, with or without a withdrawal agreement, on 31st October. It does not discuss what Parliamentary time would be needed to secure Parliamentary approval for any new withdrawal agreement, as required by section 13 of the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018.
The Court is bound to conclude, therefore, that the decision to advise Her Majesty to prorogue Parliament was unlawful because it had the effect of frustrating or preventing the ability of Parliament to carry out its constitutional functions without reasonable justification.
[ā¦]
This Court has already concluded that the Prime Ministerās advice to Her Majesty was unlawful, void and of no effect. This means that the Order in Council to which it led was also unlawful, void and of no effect and should be quashed. This means that when the Royal Commissioners walked into the House of Lords it was as if they walked in with a blank sheet of paper. The prorogation was also void and of no effect. Parliament has not been prorogued. This is the unanimous judgment of all 11 Justices.
When the judges say that the governmentās advice to the Queen was unlawful twice, you know itās serious. Both the SNP and Jeremy Corbyn are already calling for Boris Johnson to resign.
re: #125 Alephnaught
I donāt think Johnson will resign, but after that Supreme Court savaging, he damn well should.
Plaid Cymru, the Welsh nationalist party, is now calling on PM Johnson to resign immediately in the wake of the UK Supreme Courtās unanimous ruling.
The supreme court has delivered a damming and unanimous verdict. Boris Johnson has broken the law for undermining the basic principles of democracy. The prime minister has shown himself to be no better than a tin-pot dictator, shutting down democracy to avoid scrutiny.
There is no question, the prime minister must resign immediately and a crash out Brexit stopped once and for all.
In his short time in office Boris Johnson has proven himself to be a deeply dangerous and anti-democratic leader, with no respect for the rule of law. It would be a complete affront to civilised society if the prime minister did not resign after this historic ruling.

Some predictions about the Ukraine scheme:
The root idea is very likely to have come from the KGB, and itās going to be found that not only was it an attempt to smear the Biden family, the KGB also hoped it would weaken the anti-Russian politicians in Ukraine.
Giuliani was too dumb a person to coordinate the scheme. If there was a legitimate worry about the Bidens and corruption, the complaint would have gone through official channels. But it didnāt and Giuliani was sent as a back-channel communication. Instead of doing what he asked straight away, the Ukrainians thought this was a dodgy deal and so said no initially. Instead of keeping working on the scheme, Giuliani reported to Trump that he couldnāt persuade them to do the deal.
Trump, being the king of all deal-making, thought that he could have a quick call to change the Ukrainianās minds. There will have been a couple of calls before the dates we know about, where Trump tried to pressure the Ukrainians and they still said no.
After that Trump suspended the aid that was planned for Ukraine. It was only then that the Ukrainians started to realise that the requests for āan investigationā werenāt going to go away, and they privately committed to doing some action that they wouldnāt have otherwise done.
There are many people in the Whitehouse and in Ukraine who know many details of this story. Maybe each of them donāt know all of the details, but there are enough people that know enough criminal/impeachable events that occurred that any investigation is going to find the details pretty quickly.
Whether that actually leads to something happening is a different question.
Finally, I bet the KGB handlers who set this whole scheme up are staring in disbelief at how fucking dumb their assets are. I can imagine the guy who planned this whole operation banging his head on his desk āWhy did the President discuss this on an official call? Why didnāt he leave the negotiation to a representative.ā.

Last Thursdayism (alternately Last Tuesdayism or Last Wednesdayism) is the idea that the universe was created last Thursday, but with the physical appearance of being billions of years old. Under Last Thursdayism, books, fossils, light already on the way from distant stars, and literally everything (including your memories of the time before last Thursday) were all formed at the time of creation (last Thursday) in a state such that they appear much older.
If the world was created 6000 years ago with the appearance of being made billions of years ago, what is there to stop us from claiming it was made Last Thursday? The debate on whether Last Thursdayism is true has raged ever since last Thursday.
Last Thursdayism is an unfalsifiable hypothesis; Itās an Omphalos hypothesis I.e the world was created recently. Itās possible to dismiss this using Occamās razor. The idea that world was made Last Thursday is hard to believe as we perceive time to be like a river. One action follows another and we can recall the past. Once we get to next week Thursday, will the same question be posed? That is a troubling thought. It troubling because it makes the past seem like it never happened. The memories, the people in our lives, and history itself would be lies.
If history were a lie, the holocaust never happened, USA didnāt drop any atomic bombs on Japan and other key events never happened. The judicial system would fail as criminals who are incarcerated can get out of jail saying that since the crime that is perceived to have been purported never actually happened, they couldnāt be charged.
So it would be terrifying if it were true. The repercussions would be so bad that ignorance would be better.

Brexit: Boris Johnson defeated by UK Supreme Court - but he could still emerge as a winner
[ā¦]
But what no one seems to have considered is that Johnson is an explicitly populist politician. He will live to whiff-whaff another day. His whole approach to gaining the keys to No.10 has revolved around constantly responding to - and to some extent amplifying - the populist signal, not least over Brexit. In this context, a Supreme Court defeat risks simply playing into Johnsonās gameplan. It will not stop Brexit. But for Johnson and, especially for his shady apparatchiks, it will be yet another example of āthemā (that is, the elite, the experts, the untouchables that wield power without responsibility) against āusā (the Great British public).
The rules of political engagement have already been altered almost beyond recognition, and Johnsonās entire brand is based on being an unconventional politician.
The great risk of the Supreme Court ruling is that it will add fuel to a populist fire that is already raging about the need for a strong leader. Indeed, one of the few similarities between all the different manifestations of populism that have emerged around the world over the past decade is the existence of a charismatic and strong leader who can mobilise the masses and manipulate how dominant issues are framed. In the UK it is Johnson who seems to be staking the greatest claim to this role - and his popularity amongst Conservative Party members provides a powerful platform.

re: #209 Hecubaās daughter
One of the key elements in Trumpās belief that he can get away with everything ā every crime, every violation of norms ā is that his life experience proved that to him.
and he ran as the anti-politician, the outsider, the self-made man free of need to pander to donors, etc., and sold it successfully to the media and the public.
His lack of any record of public service was seen as a plus, whereas for all others, it was just a source of dirt to dig up on them.
That approach allowed and allows him to get away with the most egregious excesses, starting with his lack of tax returns, that would have derailed the career of any other professional politician.
re: #204 Belafon
This is not an argument for or against impeachment, but a reminder that the rules for Democrats arenāt the same as the rules for Republicans. The people I work with, otherwise intelligent people, get their news about the president from Fox, Fox the channel and Fox the website. So, when impeachment procedings start, and Fox ignores all of the committee meetings that are suddendly gaining access to information after being blocked for six months by the courts, donāt expect your conservative associates to know the details about how Trump withheld $400M in aid to Ukraine until they started investigating Biden.

Alright, Hugh Hewitt, you want to āask questionsā about Hunter Biden, we can do that.
*cue McLaughlin Group theme*
QUESTION ONE: Is Hunter Biden the President of the United States? NO!
QUESTION TWO: Has Hunter Biden appointed dangerously unqualified people to head Cabinet agencies? NO!
QUESTION THREE: Has Hunter Biden then replaced departing agency heads with āactingā replacements as a means to circumvent congressional oversight? NO!
QUESTION FOUR: Has Hunter Biden hollowed out this nationās national security apparatus for personal benefit and the benefit of our geopolitical adversaries? NO!
QUESTION FIVE: Does Hunter Biden violate the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution on a daily basis? NO!
QUESTION SIX: Has Hunter Biden ordered the implementation of a draconian immigration policy which confines children in cages in internment camps on our southern border? NO!
QUESTION SIX: On a scale of one to ten with ten representing absolute metaphysical certitude and one representing stygian doubt and despair, is Hugh Hewitt a desperate flack throwing this out as distraction to save a criminally corrupt mobster-in-chief? The correct answer is INFINITY PLUS OOONE!
