UPDATE at 1/4/10 10:37:58 am:

The Las Vegas Sun has a report with some details: Marshals shot in downtown federal courthouse; suspect dead.

A federal court officer has died and another is in serious condition after being shot this morning in the lobby of the Lloyd D. George Federal Courthouse, 333 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

The U.S. Marshals Service says the shooting victims included a deputy U.S. marshal and a court security officer. The Associated Press is reporting that one of the officers has died, although it wasn’t immediately clear which one.

University Medical Center spokesman Rick Plummer said the dead officer was 65 years old.

Metro Police responded at 8:05 a.m. to the shooting, police spokeswoman Barbara Morgan said. FBI Special Agent Joseph Dickey says the gunman died shortly after a shootout.

Can't happen, it is against the law to bring a firearm into a federal building.

Sens Reid and Ensign's offices are in the building.

re: #5 lawhawk

Also of note, though probably just coincidence:

Nevada Sens.Harry Reid and John Ensign both have offices in the federal building. Ensign spokeswoman Jennifer Cooper said the senator was not there, although the staff was evacuated.

I will never understand these douchebags' desire to conduct suicide by cop and take innocent folks with them.

9 reine.de.tout  Mon, Jan 4, 2010 10:40:31am

I counted 47 shots in that short clip (which obviously began after the shooting had started), and I think I missed a few.

So at least 100 rounds would not sound out of the question.

geez.
How awful.

10 Lidane  Mon, Jan 4, 2010 10:41:38am

I just...I can't even process that. WTF? How awful for the friends, co-workers and families of the dead. My condolences to all of them.

11 Kragar  Mon, Jan 4, 2010 10:42:20am

One shooter, apparently walked in with a shotgun and just started blasting. The other shots were officers returning fire.

Also of note, though probably just coincidence:

For all our sakes I hope it's just a coincidence. If this was an attempt to get into the offices of either Senator, then things have gone even further around the bend than I'd previously thought. =/

There is a youtube clip from outside the courthouse. Nothing on the video to be seen but you can hear dozens of shots. Ok to post link?

26 lawhawk  Mon, Jan 4, 2010 10:51:57am

This report suggests that the gunman managed to enter the courthouse, opened fire, and then was forced outside by law enforcement returning fire - and the gunman was killed outside the courthouse.

‘N-Word’ Sign Dogs Would-Be Tea Party Leader

Dale Robertson, a Tea Party activist who operates TeaParty.org, is getting stung for an old photo — taken at the Feb. 27, 2009 Tea Party in Houston — in which he holds a sign reading “Congress = Slaveowner, Taxpayer = Niggar.”

After the ResistNet listerv promoted “Liberty Concerts” to be held by TeaParty.org, a source passed on this photo of Robertson, after the jump.

The Alamogordo Daily News got a picture of one man with a rifle and a sign that says, "No To Obama Care / No To Congess (sic) Spending / No To Stimulus / Replace Comunist (sic) in DC".

The AP reports that there were "plenty of handguns and rifles displayed ... but no violence."

69 simoom  Mon, Jan 4, 2010 11:35:24am

An interesting catch over at John Cole's blog. The New York Times magazine put up a nine page article on how Obama has been prosecuting the war on terrorism (with a focus on John Brennan), including the events surrounding the attempted Christmas day bombing. That post on Cole's blog zeroed in on this paragraph:

A half-dozen former senior Bush officials involved in counterterrorism told me before the Christmas Day incident that for the most part, they were comfortable with Obama’s policies, although they were reluctant to say so on the record. Some worried they would draw the ire of Cheney’s circle if they did, while others calculated that calling attention to the similarities to Bush would only make it harder for Obama to stay the course. And they generally resent Obama’s anti-Bush rhetoric and are unwilling to give him political cover by defending him

I've just started reading through the NYT piece, but in a quick initial scan I noticed this from Brennan:

“A lot of the knuckleheads I’ve been listening to out there on the network shows don’t know what they’re talking about,” he told me after the Christmas Day attempt. Some Republicans, including Cheney, were blatantly mischaracterizing the record, he fumed. “When they say the administration’s not at war with Al Qaeda, that is just complete hogwash.” It was the angriest I had heard him during months of conversations. “What they’re doing is just playing into Al Qaeda’s strategic effort, which is to get us to battle among ourselves instead of focusing on them,” he said.

The funny thing is that the Democrats were busy doing that to Bush all throughout his term in office, and now that the GOP is on the outside, many are reverting to the same tactics against the Democrats. Pitiful.

Still, the fact is that Obama is pursuing many of the same tactics as the Bush Administration in going after al Qaeda and the GWOT. That has to be causing quite a bit of discomfort on the left, which hoped that this would end.

Maybe so. But counter protesters are rarely the subject during protests unless there's some kind of confrontation. A bunch of middle aged white guys protesting while bearing hand guns and rifles will be the subject of attention. One man holding up a rifle with a sign that says "replace Communist in DC" is still a new phenomenon and a news organization will report that instead of a bunch of counter protester.

I'm not expert but I pulled down a copy of the picture, it doesn't appear to be photoshopped. What is interesting is the pattern of bolts, like it's usually a fixture on a vehicle or building. It also appears that there could possibly be velcro on it where they stick on different things under "Taxpayer =" and pull off the preceding messages to get the one they want depending on audience.

Well then credit is due to LAPD that had a generous no go zone to keep the protests apart. I just uploaded 4 shots of them in the link. I had the impression from talking to some officers that the counter protesters had worked closely with them. I'm no media guy. But when I went to document the event as best I could solo, I got to both sides. I'm glad I did, and went with my camera gear. The gear was effectively a pass back and forth. But that party was very different than what I saw here and on TV. The one here was relatively tame and sane.

Senator Reid’s office said that his staff was fine. “My thoughts are with the victims of today’s shooting and their families,” Senator Reid said in a statement. “The law enforcement personnel who protect the courthouse put their lives at risk every day to keep the people who are inside safe, and I greatly appreciate their service.”

Asked if the senator thought the incident was related to the presence of two senators in the buildings, Jennifer Cooper, Mr. Ensign’s spokesman, said the office was still learning details of the shooting.

Three NJ nuclear power plants on the Delaware are running at 80% power because ice is on the river and may cause damage to the intakes. The nuclear power plants take river water and use it to cool the turbines and it needs liquid water to make that happen. If the ice gets in, it can damage the impellers and other systems.

They pull in water from the river to cycle thru the cooling system. If ice has blocked the intakes or affected the pumping mechanisms which bring in the waters, then the cooling of the reactor would be affected.

A man walked into the Lloyd D. George Federal Courthouse in downtown Las Vegas this morning, pulled a shotgun from beneath his jacket and opened fire, killing a court security officer.

FBI Special Agent Joseph Dickey of the Las Vegas field office said investigators believe the gunman was acting alone when he fatally shot the officer and wounded a deputy U.S. marshal. Dickey said the shooting, which occurred about 8:05 a.m. at the courthouse at 333 Las Vegas Blvd. South, doesn't appear to be an act of terrorism.

Dickey said the gunman, whose name hasn't been released, died shortly after several marshals returned fire. Authorities said the gunman was wearing dark clothing and a jacket with a shotgun concealed beneath the jacket.

The shooting occurred in the building's lobby and the gunman never entered the secure area of the courthouse, Dickey said.

Moussaoui plead guilty because he didn't think he'd get a fair trial, and was shooting for martyrdom (due to having his head up his ass). It wasn't until after he was convicted that he realized that the trial was actually a fair process and that if he'd not admitted guilt, he might have stood a chance at less than a life sentence.

Expect KSM and the rest to plead 'Not Guilty' in their criminal trials in the coming year, as they've probably (or at least their lawyers have) learned from Moussaoui's trial that bragging guilt isn't a smart defense strategy. But they'll all go down just the same.

If I were on the Left, I wouldn't be protesting the Tea Parties. I'd be sending them money.

re: #81 abbyadams

I read an article today that suggests Tim Robbins sent Michele Bachmann money. Maybe some of the left has caught on to this idea.

No need to send her money, she's perfectly happy working toward a Tea Party defined GoP for free:

[Link: thinkprogress.org...]

BACHMANN: Well, it’s embrace the tea party movement with full arms and hold as many open forums as they possibly can to bring people in and listen to them because the leadership right now is truly coming from the tea party movement because it is disaffected Democrats, Independents, Republicans. It’s really people who love the country and who brace what ultimately has been the mission statement of the Republican Party. If you look at the two parties, Democrat and Republican, there’s no question that the heartbeat of the tea party movement would be more in line with the mission state of the Republican party certainly than that of the Democrat party. So if the Republican Party is wise, they will allow themselves to be re-defined by the tea party movement. And I hope that that will be the case.

How's that socialism working for ya', Hugo?

How many more people must die in shootings like this before we start addressing this problem seriously? We must use profiling to give us the best chance of stopping attacks like this. White, gun-owning males aged 25-45 should be strip searched before they are allowed to go near a courthouse. How many of these attacks must occur before we stop handcuffing ourselves with political correctness?

A United States Circuit Court of Appeals last week upheld the constitutionality of pointing a gun at any citizen daring to carry, lawfully, a concealed weapon in public.

The First Circuit Court of Appeals is the Court just below the United States Supreme Court in the New England states. The case stems from a lawyer who sued a police officer after he was detained for lawfully carrying a concealed weapon while in possession of a license to carry concealed. According to the case opinion, the lawyer, Greg Schubert, had a pistol concealed under his suit coat, and Mr. Schubert was walking in what the court described as a "high crime area." At some point a police officer, J.B. Stern, who lived up to his last name, caught a glimpse of the attorney's pistol, and he leapt out of his patrol car "in a dynamic and explosive manner" with his gun drawn, pointing it at the attorney's face.

I think a good gift for the President would be a chocolate revolver.
And since he's so busy, you'd probably have to run up to him real
quick and hand it to him.

A multimillionaire Venezuelan businessman, currently jailed in Caracas on bank fraud charges, had been sent to Cuba by President Hugo Chávez to help the country recover from its economic slump and also to spur economic growth on the island after Fidel Castro dies, according to former employees.

In an initial show of his new responsibility, looking for a personal benefit from future business in Cuba, Ricardo Fernández Barruecos gave the Cuban government a gift of 28 BMW automobiles, his former security consultant Luis Castro said in a sworn statement.

Castro told El Nuevo Herald that Fernández, envisioning brilliant prospects for his business in Cuba, also earned the support of Raúl Castro to open up the island's economy after the death of his brother Fidel.

Another former employee of Fernández's organization told El Nuevo Herald that Fernández made several visits to Cuba by private jet and met with then-Foreign Minister Felipe Pérez Roque.

But the close relationship between Fernández and Chávez soon ended.

Venezuelan regulatory agencies in November seized Fernández's banks, companies and properties, accusing him of massive fraud related to his recent acquisition of four banks.

The scuttled Cuba mission is just one of many aspects of Fernández's life that have recently emerged in the wake of the fraud charges.

SNIP

Chávez maintained constant and direct communication with Fernández, a senior Venezuelan business executive told El Nuevo Herald on condition of anonymity because he fears government reprisals.

In 2006, Chávez cited Fernández as a model ``socialist businessman.''

But for some leaders of the opposition in Venezuela, Chávez's admiration went beyond his gratitude for Fernández's support of his socialist program.

They claim that Adan Chávez, the president's brother, received a cut of the businessman's success.

Sarcasm noted, but your analogy tends to fall apart when looking at a list of past courthouse shootings. Anyway, the whole profiling thing is a pretty lame tactic anyway. Especially lame is the focus on national origin by the current administration.

Note that I am ok with either a civil or miltrib trial for foreign combatants captured on non us soil. I'd have rather they took place in 2006 when they should have if the slugs in congress had have gotten the enabling legislation right. At present if it's faster now in civil courts, I'm all for that.

Not brave enough to wear the sign yourself Mr. Patriot?

He strapped a gun to his dog?

Why do I find that really disturbing?

Just what she needs. An excuse to blame Muslims even when they aren't to blame. She's ready for any occasion.

We're talking about someone who blamed Muslims for Tinkerbell wearing leggings, so yes, I think she's fully prepared for all contingencies.

Maybe some will consider the shooter a hero, like Angela Davis.

If there was a political motive, some surely will. Why are we talking about Angela Davis again?

192 RealismRox  Mon, Jan 4, 2010 3:56:08pm

Just watching NBC news with Brian Williams. They said the shooter was angry about cuts in social security benefits. Not sure what political leaning the guy was, but odds are he's a right-winger (just my best guess).

It is also "against the law" to "Spit on the Street" - as my wise father advised me - unless someone sees it AND complains - the Spit is merely "Against the Street."

If/When CUBA opens up, Its Major Crop just Might Be BIO-FUELS. There are so called "gusanos" in Southern Florida ready to make themselves and the Island rather wealthy on "alternate fuels" let alone the OIL that can be drilled offshore, that we in the US are TOO STUPID to exploit. VIVA CUBA de la FUTURA, otra vez, la Perla de Los Antilles. -S-
