David Frum is Surprised That Conservatives Continue to Support Andrew Breitbart

Opinion • Views: 3,266

David Frum seems surprised that conservative media helped Andrew Breitbart smear an innocent woman: Shirley Sherrod and the shame of conservative media.

I’m not sure why he’s surprised. I got over being surprised a while ago.

Frum calls Breitbart “the conservative Dan Rather.”

But Joshua Green thinks Breitbart is something much darker.

Breitbart focuses on race. Today’s episode with Shirley Sherrod, who was forced to resign from the Agriculture Department on the basis of a doctored and intentionally misleading videotape (see below), is an especially ugly case in point, calculated to stir the very worst racial resentments. This time the political world—the NAACP, the Agriculture Secretary—moved as quickly as the media world to unthinking response, and I suspect it happened precisely because race was involved. I don’t doubt that the administration’s understandable desire to avoid racial issues played a big part in how this turned out.

But what’s galling to me—gut-wrenching, really, like watching old news footage of blacks being beaten and clubbed at lunch counters—is that Breitbart obviously understood the powerful effect his tape would have, posted it anyway, and then assumed the role of ringmaster, expertly conducting the media circus, fanning the flames. It’s hardly the first time. But the moral ugliness of what’s just happened is glaring, and it’s hard for me to see how the media can justify continuing to treat Breitbart as simply a roguish provocateur. He’s something much darker.

Dead on. Nail these bastards to the wall with what they are.

I hope Andrew Breitbart’s status as someone who should ever be trusted bites the big one out of all of this…

I posted in a previous thread that I thought that “lynch” was the exact appropriate word to use in this case. And I stick by it. I think Breitbart is a complete and utter asshole but, also, a racist with racist intent. It’s fairly clear he orchestrated this in the same way that false evidence was used against blacks during hanging lynchings. This is no different aside from the fact that nobody was killed (but a life was potentially ruined).

So yes, he’s a racist asshole and Fox is guilty of knowingly catering to his racist agenda.

From Frum…

On the phone on the evening of July 20, a friend asked me: “Can Breitbart possibly survive?” I could only laugh incredulously. I answered: “Of course he’ll survive, and undamaged. The incident won’t matter at all.”

There will be no apology or statement of regret for distributing a doctored tape to defame and destroy someone. There will be not even a flutter of interest among conservatives in discussing Breitbart’s role. By the morning of July 21, the Fox & Friends morning show could devote a segment to the Sherrod case without so much as a mention of Breitbart’s role. The central fact of the Sherrod story has been edited out of the conservative narrative, just as it was edited out of the tape itself.

When people talk of the “closing of the conservative mind” this is what they mean: not that conservatives are more narrow-minded than other people — everybody can be narrow minded — but that conservatives have a unique capacity to ignore unwelcome fact.

When Dan Rather succumbed to the forged Bush war record hoax in 2004, CBS forced him into retirement. Breitbart is the conservative Dan Rather, but there will be no discredit, no resignation for him.

Instead, conservatives are consumed with a new snippets-out-of-context uproar, the latest round of JournoList quotations. Here at last is proof of the cynical machinations of the hated liberal media! As to the cynical machinations of conservative media — well, as the saying goes, the fish never notices the water through which it swims.

Yeah, that’s about it.

Did Breitbart receive this tape from someone or did he create or find it himself? Not that it matters, but I was listening to Coulter’s little rant and she blamed the person who sent him the tape.

I don’t know a whole lot about journalism, but I thought good journalists are supposed to check out their sources. Not that I would credit Coulter with good journalism either.

I almost consider the comparison to Dan Rather an insult to Rather. Dan made an effort (half-assed though it was) to verify that the Killian Memos were authentic, something Breitbart would not have done because he knew what he was peddling was pure horseshit. And Rather’s motivations, however wrong they might have been, were purely political. Breitbart’s motivations were racist, bigoted, and hateful.

Rather pushed the Killiam Memos because he didn’t like Bush. Breitbart pushed his hackjob video because he’s a racist bastard.

I agree, but I still think his motivation was the resolution by the NAACP. He was trying to prove they were racist, particularly that Mark William’s “Letter from Abe” flopped.

Agreed. It’s time to stop pretending that these people are just “expressing a different view” or “doing what they think is right”, and start calling the venom and hatred being directed at black people the racial incitement that it is. And I fear if this isn’t stopped, we *will* see an upsurge in physical violence against blacks. It happened during the Civil Rights era, and the mood now seems disturbingly familiar.

It was the motivation, but it was more than that. It was, as Summer said here and downstairs, about “setting an example,” about putting “uppity” black folk “in their place.” He wanted to change the narrative, from an organization that has prided itself on tackling racism towards black people calling on the Tea Party to do something about the racists in their own ranks to that of a bunch of black hypocrites saying one thing but practicing another. He wanted to, if not silence them, then at least shame them into not raising a hand to “their betters.”

35 Dark_Falcon  Wed, Jul 21, 2010 7:34:40pm

Continued from the previous thread.:

As the player characters advance into the Ruin of the Harpy, they notice a brass frame containing cutouts of the phases of the moon. It is clearly newer than the Ruin, and the players are drawn to it. As they near it, a figure moves from out of the shadows towards the frame. His name is Berlin Inferno, and he is drawn to its images of the crescent moon.

Berlin Inferno: “This is an Outrageous Rage! The holy Tomb of the Harpy must not be defiled by the crescent moon. Everyone knows that it is a symbol of Islam and thus is EVIL!”

BI begins to smash the crescent moon parts of the frame. He then turns to the players and says “Surely, you agree with me?”.

What happens next is does depend on the Players. If Curious Lurker or another Muslim poster is present, jump to the next section. If not, the players may try to sneak past BI, but this does have consequences. If they do not fight BI, his anti-Muslim hate goes unchallenged and it feeds to Demi-litch PALINDROME, thus making her stronger and the final battle harder. But if the players wish to conserve their strength, they may attempt a Dissembling skill roll at this time. If they succeed, they lie and tell BI they approve of his actions and he believes them. While they cannot take anything from the Ruin, the players are then free to proceed, but at an additional cost of 30 Karma Points each for the lie. If the players decide to tell BI the truth (that he is wrong and a bigot to boot), go on to the next section. Also do this if the skill roll fails, though the players lose 10 Karma points anyway for being caught in the lie and cannot get them back by defeating BI.

As some of the longtermers here know, I used to get all hopped up on politics.

These days, I take a slightly different approach to these matters. Perhaps it’s a function of my new gig, but I keep thinking to myself: “When the way prevails in the land, it is shameful to do poorly; when the way does not prevail in the land, it is shameful to do well.”

I think that anyone can say that the way does not prevail in this land, and that there is no political solution to the problem we face.

Why, it almost sounds as if you’re talking about metanoia.

Upding.

70 Mad Prophet Ludwig  Wed, Jul 21, 2010 7:44:50pm

An update, to my mini-blog, also here because it sheds a profound psychological light on certain types of racism. Pardon some background, but this is a fabulous and naked example of self hatred. We see it in Jews and Blacks and all minorities. In this case it involves Hispanics. It is always twisted and always scary to see. It makes the least sense of all types of racism and it is the most virulent.

My mini blog “covered” the most hateful and racist abuse from the stalkers, directed at a Latina woman who was protesting the Az law.

I had written:

More surprising is the Rodent, that Latin man of honor who is happy to see her so abused. He commented that she was

“either white and hating herself or Aztec.”

I suppose that makes abusing her OK in his twisted world. Rodent is actually darker complected and more ethnic looking than the woman in question. He is too stupid to realize that the white supremacists he hangs with think he is just as much a “mud person” as they see her.

Rodent became angry and wrote:

Wow is this guy on drugs! Coldwarrior met me and can tell you I can easily pass for Italian or Greek.I have Lebanese in me so my olive completion. I’m a mud person to Ludwig. This guy is a white supremacist.

This quote by him is very telling. He feels compelled to make excuses for his complexion.

Rodent, there is nothing wrong, or lesser, or bad about not being white. It is not something you should be ashamed of. The people who will call you a mud person are the same ones who will happily deport you. They are the ones you hang out with.

How much must he hate that proud Latina woman who stands up for her people, and has no shame whatsoever about her beautiful, not so white, skin? How he must despise her for boldly being everything he hates about himself.

The worst racists are always the ones who hate their own people and themselves.

plato discusses this very thing in the Statesman. There’s a great reversal in the rotation of the heavens right at the end of the age, when things have fallen into utter disarray. Then, Chronos from his tower sees the chaos and, grabbing the great steerboard of the cosmos, turns the entire thing back around again - back to the golden age.

“Nonsense! Nonsense!” snorted Tasbrough. “That couldn’t happen here in America, not possibly! We’re a country of freemen.”

“The answer to that,” suggested Doremus Jessup, “if Mr. Falck will forgive me, is ‘the hell it can’t!’ Why, there’s no country in the world that can get more hysterical—yes, or more obsequious!—than America. Look how Huey Long became absolute monarch over Louisiana, and how the Right Honorable Mr. Senator Berzelius Windrip owns his State.

Listen to Bishop Prang and Father Coughlin on the radio—divine oracles, to millions. Remember how casually most Americans have accepted Tammany grafting and Chicago gangs and the crookedness of so many of President Harding’s appointees? Could Hitler’s bunch, or Windrip’s, be worse? Remember the Kuklux Klan?

Remember our war hysteria, when we called sauerkraut ‘Liberty cabbage’ and somebody actually proposed calling German measles ‘Liberty measles’? And wartime censorship of honest papers? Bad as Russia! Remember our kissing the—well, the feet of Billy Sunday, the million-dollar evangelist, and of Aimée McPherson, who swam from the Pacific Ocean clear into the Arizona desert and got away with it? Remember Voliva and Mother Eddy?

Remember our Red scares and our Catholic scares, when all well-informed people knew that the O.G.P.U. were hiding out in Oskaloosa, and the Republicans campaigning against Al Smith told the Carolina mountaineers that if Al won the Pope would illegitimatize their children? Remember Tom Heflin and Tom Dixon? Remember when the hick legislators in certain states, in obedience to William Jennings Bryan, who learned his biology from his pious old grandma, set up shop as scientific experts and made the whole world laugh itself sick by forbidding the teaching of evolution?

Remember the Kentucky night-riders? Remember how trainloads of people have gone to enjoy lynchings?

Not happen here? Prohibition—shooting down people just because they might be transporting liquor—no, that couldn’t happen in America! Why, where in all history has there ever been a people so ripe for a dictatorship as ours! We’re ready to start on a Children’s Crusade — only of adults — right now, and the Right Reverend Abbots Windrip and Prang are all ready to lead it!”

“Well, what if they are?” protested R. C. Crowley. “It might not be so bad. I don’t like all these irresponsible attacks on us bankers all the time. Of course, Senator Windrip has to pretend publicly to bawl the banks out, but once he gets into power he’ll give the banks their proper influence in the administration and take our expert financial advice. Yes.

Why are you so afraid of the word ‘Fascism,’ Doremus? Just a word—just a word! And might not be so bad, with all the lazy bums we got panhandling relief nowadays, and living on my income tax and yours — not so worse to have a real Strong Man, like Hitler or Mussolini — like Napoleon or Bismarck in the good old days — and have ‘em really run the country and make it efficient and prosperous again. ‘Nother words, have a doctor who won’t take any back-chat, but really boss the patient and make him get well whether he likes it or not!”

“Yes!” said Emil Staubmeyer. “Didn’t Hitler save Germany from the Red Plague of Marxism? I got cousins there. I know!”

“Hm,” said Doremus, as often Doremus did say it. “Cure the evils of Democracy by the evils of Fascism! Funny therapeutics. I’ve heard of their curing syphilis by giving the patient malaria, but I’ve never heard of their curing malaria by giving the patient syphilis!”

Walter, I followed yours and Obdi’s suggestion for Neil Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle. I’m not feeling it yet. I may be stuck in my non-fiction/biography rut.

I don’t know how to convince you. But, if you do read it, please read “Cryptonomicon” first… the novel about code breaking in WWII and a contemporary story about setting up a “data haven” in the SOuth Seas… and how it all ties together.

Makes reading the Baroque Cycle more fun, since there is some connections, not any that makes one unreadable without the other, but just some connections that make the whole thing more fun. A lot of people read the Baroque Cycle as a four book set, starting with “Cryptonomicon”. It’s a big commitment, over 4000 pages.

It’s almost like non-fiction it’s so well written. You’ll probably learn more about some history then you would ever in a straight history class or book.

Stats:

Berlin Inferno Level 26 Hater Warrior

Armor: Steel Plate Armor and Helmet. Blocks all reasoned analysis and reduces all weapon attack damage by 40%. Any attacks doing less than 3 damage are disregarded.

Weapon:

Flaming Sword: 3D6 + 2 damage per successful attack, reduced by half with a save. If the save roll fails, make a second save roll. If the second roll fails, the character is set on fire and is stunned and suffers 15 additional points of damage per turn. This can be ended with save roll (at an additional +2 added to the target number) or with an appropriate spell. Unlike the weapons of Dorkus and Idiot Pundit, the sword cannot be shattered.

Spell:

Summon Troglodytes (every 3 turns): Summons an additional 1D6 Troglodytes into the chamber. This can blocked after the first use by a successful use of Intimidating Blow, or the use of the PWN SCREED spell.

Special: Berlin Inferno’s hatred towards Islam cause him to attack any Muslim character headlong and without restraint. Against most other characters (except Ludwig, SpaceJesus, and Reginald Perrin, who Pwn him) he waits for an opportune moment and then darts in to attack.

Victory: If the Players defeat BI, the Troglodytes lose heat and run back to their Fever Swamp. The Soul Gem is a Diamond behind the brass frame.

Treasure: The Crescent moons the players saved turn out to be solid gold.

bill o’reilly is now saying that shirley sherrod’s speech requires MORE explanation for some OTHER parts of the speech that might be racist or socialist.

particularly where she says that she’s never seen such mean.spiritedness as was seen over the health care reform, and that it’s not about race, it’s about poor versus wealthy [this is bill’s paraphrase].

now: o’reilly also apologized for not doing his homework. great. awesome. that was at the top of his segment, and he’s spent the rest of the time tearing her down again.

My son used to eat the dog food.
17ish years ago I was a bad mom who let the kid roll about in one of those walker things that I don’t think good parents let their babes use anymore.
He loved the dog food, if he was loose from the playpen (don’t judge me!) we had to put up the dog food.
I need to save that as a “story I tell a future serious girlfriend and/or boyfriend”.

oh, and you can see his eyes light up as he gleefully discusses whether or not the white house is “afraid” of fox news network, and that they obviously pressured vilsack into firing sherrod in an attempt to manage “blowback.”

apparently the basis of the barack obama brand is that he is “post.racial,” and he is eviscerating his own brand by suing arizona for their laws and having sherrod fired.*

what bizarre doublespeak kafkaesque world do these people live in, where obama’s attempts to stifle a racist.in.practice law [technically the law doesn’t address race directly, it’s in practice that the law becomes utterly intolerable] and the reinstatement of sherrod are signs of RACISM?

re: #128 Dark_Falcon

I don’t do games, so I didn’t understand everything, but it definitely sounds like the good have a chance to smack down the haters, so WOOHOO!

It’s a riff on Wizards of the Coast’s remake of D&D’s The Tomb of Horrors. The final adventure mostly takes place on the astral plane of Pluton, in the Tomb of Dead Gods. One of the encounters is in the tomb of a goddess of decay. The goddess is satirized as the Harpy, AKA Pam “Atlas Shrieks” Gellar. Berlin Inferno is a fictionalization of Stalker “Coldwarrior”. I changed the name of the character because ‘cold’ didn’t fit with his weapon. He uses the flaming sword of the Berlin Brigade (in which he once served) as his avatar. I made that his weapon because I felt it would make a scary and powerful boss weapon. Since it was forged in honest service, rather than Butthurt, it cannot be shattered even though its user is corrupted by hate.

by the way … keith olbermann is being called “the most hated person at MSNBC.”

i know him and worked with him … and you cannot imagine a person of his stature with fewer social skills than Keith has. he is a very pathetic individual, and i say that with a degree of actual sympathy.

I used to work for Michael Lerner. It would take some convincing to convince me that Olbermann has fewer social skills than he.

re: #211 Dark_Falcon

Okay, now it makes more sense. Loved the Harpy part. ;o)

re: #268 marjoriemoon

Back off Brookly. He didn’t say anything offense. It was sarcasm.

The Mirage fighters were French made and sold to many countries by France, not Israel. Israel bought them and so did S. Africa. The Centurion tanks were made by the British and Israel also bought them.

Israel denounced apartheid strongly during the 1960s, but after the Yom Kippur war (1973) countries were pulling away support for Israel. They began selling arms to S. Africa, but nuclear? Israel has been accused of doing so, but there isn’t any proof.

The South African AF rebuilt their Mirage IIIc fighters up to the new Cheetah standard with extensive help from Israel. Notice how the Cheetah looks just like the Israeli KFIR…which is also rebuilt from old Mirage IIIc’s.

Fun document here from the Guardian an an actual working Israeli nuke weapon sale offer to the RSA from official RSA archives now declassified…!

The upgrade of old British Centurion tanks into the newer Oliphant standard was also accomplished with Israeli know how…and again, the Israelis had practical experience with the same tanks.
The extensive military contacts between the services of both countries is well documented and not at all a controversial subject. It is taken for granted that Israeli offered help…and proven just two months ago that Israeli actually offered working nuclear weapons…to South Africa.

I really could not care less, beyond the interesting to and fro of arms evolution and who has what today. Realpolitik is a fact, and Israel obviously found it in her interest to work deals with the RSA. I can’t imagine that they didn’t have tacit (and behind the scenes)approval from the Reagan Admin at the time, since there were Soviet client regimes on two borders with the RSA and Cuban troops in Angola and Namibia. I have no moral qualms about it, since that was the reality of the Cold war and both sides played dirty and played to win.

I made General Tso’s chicken for dinner. It was a bit too sweet, and not spicy enough, but the texture was just perfect.

Next time: less sugar, more vinegar and hot peppers.

Use honey rather than sugar also, it will react differently with the vinegar and make for a better sauce consistency.

Israel To Send Drone Surveillance Planes to Turkey
By JPOST.COM STAFF

Israel is set to send four ‘Heron’ drone airplanes to Turkey in August according to military sources in Ankara, Army Radio reported Wednesday.
According to the report, senior Turkish military officials visited Israel recently to negotiate the closing details of the deal.
The ‘Heron” drones are unmanned aircraft used for gathering surveillance.

As I mentioned previously, I’ve got a Chinese funeral to attend tomorrow. Confucius meets Corinthians, as it were - nominally (but devoutly) Christian, these folk are Confucian to the core. Had to cancel EVERYTHING to prepare for the boss’ mother’s death, and have been busier than a one-armed paper-hanger since she died, making arrangements, threatening and wheedling and cajoling folk to go to the service, buying flowers for people who never intended to send them, but who are expected to send them nonetheless, outta respect for the boss and her family. It’s an odd thing, the way Chinese involve everyone around them in everything they’re going through. I’ve begun to pick up the habit myself, much to my wife’s annoyance and confusion.

Actually, it’s even worse than Rather—but for the fact that Rather had even a bigger pulpit.

Anyone viewing an edited soundbite out of context has a responsibility to find the source and see the whole speech, in its entirety.

Rather was handed a complete set of fake documents. If they weren’t a forgery, it would have been meaningful. Of course, he should have consulted a few experts before putting it on the air. Certainly CBS could have afforded a few thousand dollars for an expert consultant, (instead of waiting for Charles to do it for free)

BTW: As a former Adobe person (who was on the original PostScript team), that a/b image Charles made of the document done in Word vs. the original document was 100% proof. There was no way that a typewritten or typeset document from that era would have exactly matched the letterspacing, linespacing, kerning and word-breaks of a modern Word document, even if the font was the same design. Those elements are implementation dependent, even with the same font and metrics.

OT Sorry: I need to vent, mom now has four different doctors, each one with a completely different prognosis. The latest development is she went to see another neurologist after seeing the one I recommended after web research and a bit of phone survey.

This one has convinced her that she has a unnamed “muscle wasting disease” that probably can’t be treated “but if she comes back every few weeks for a few months” maybe they can identify it and maybe it will be one of the “treatable ones.”

Mom has always been prone to depression and now she has flat out given up, she quit her part-time adult education teaching job, decided that it was no longer safe for her to drive, and only gets out of bed to park in a chair and watch T.V. (well, that and call everyone she even knows remotely and sob into the phone about she probably has ALS (which by the way is a nerve disease, the nerves go, then the muscle, which this is not) and begs them to pray for her.
(Of course everyone knows that the best way to combat muscle wasting is to cease all physical activity immediately while eating Hugh amounts of fats and sugar. (Sorry I know I should have more empathy but it is just too fucking pathetic a drama queen response to garner any respect from me at all.)

Meanwhile Dad is still fighting Liver cancer, going to Chemo treatments every week, living with diabetes, and still keeping a good attitude, he is always up for a “road trip” to get out of the house.

When it was just Dad who was sick it was fine and I was glad to be here to help out, but now I am Mom’s personal slave…and it sucks. It sucks more every day and I have about hit my frustration limit, I’m starting to get snappish and rude, I can’t seem to help it.

I guess I need a friggin vacation, but I’m not going to get one am I? I no longer have any life, any friends, or hardly even ever any time to myself.

I understand your vent, in my case the two parents were sick at the same time, except it was my Dad who was the basket case. The last 10 years of his life, he was convinced he was going to keel over and die at any moment, and he spent those years sleeping, sitting in a chair sleeping except for meals, and being depressed (oh, and worried that the ringing in his ears meant he had brain cancer).

He outlived my mom. Until the very end, I mean 2 hours before she died, she was talking to us, asking about how our lives were going, etc. She had to know she was dying. But she didn’t let us know the pain she was in or anything else.

I urge you to find someone to help you, if only a few hours a week, to be with your mom. You are entitled to your own time. Your mom may live many many more years.

Hillary started the birther meme, among other derange ODS memes, during the DNC primaries, in a desperate attempt to discredit Obama. In the process, she provided political cover for the broader birther movement during its infancy.

She deserved everything she got during the primaries.
