Texas Gov. Perry Deals With Drought By Declaring Days of Prayer for Rain

Right wing magical thinking in the land of creationists
Wingnuts • Views: 25,952

Texas Governor Rick Perry is taking highly effective action against the drought that is ravaging Texas: he’s issued a proclamation for three days of prayer for rain.

But of course, everyone knows rain incantations can’t possibly work without also slaughtering a goat while performing a ritual dance.

Seems like this is a common Republican response to rain. I remember it happened in 2007 I believe in Georgia. How about Perry actually do something about the drought instead of being a passive aggressive pussyshit?

Seriously? It sickens me that any state in America has been reduced to the point that “pray for x” is our go to plan….

What kind of sacrilege would it be in the wingnut world if one were to pray for an easing of AGW?

I am currently praying for Natalie Portman, the chick out of Glee and 80s Cindy Crawford to pay me a special visit.

It isn’t working though. Maybe someone should tell Perry that prayer is not very effective at making things happen in the real world.

Well they know that AGW isn’t real… They believe in real things like the Easter bunny, that poor people all did something to deserve being poor, that all rich people earned their wealth and that trickle down economics works. They also believe that no corporation would harm people and that black people aren’t really Americans.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, RICK PERRY, Governor of Texas, under the authority vested in me by the Constitution and Statutes of the State of Texas, do hereby proclaim the three-day period from Friday, April 22, 2011, to Sunday, April 24, 2011, as Days of Prayer for Rain in the State of Texas. I urge Texans of all faiths and traditions to offer prayers on that day for the healing of our land, the rebuilding of our communities and the restoration of our normal and robust way of life.

Science denial is one thing, but to be so innumerate as to lack the ability to count to three, or so grammatically challenged as to fail at plurals, AND to be elected governor— surely Texas must be a wondrous state.

The governor of Georgia did that a couple of years ago when there was a serious drought and Florida and Georgia almost came to fisticuffs over water.

I think that sincere or not, this type of call avoids the need to ask the faithful to inconvenience themselves in any way with water restrictions. After all, who can blame the Governor if God hisself doesn’t do something so simple as to make rain? It has to be deserved punishment.

re: #102 Charles

Why is God punishing Texas with a drought?

A little note abut prayers for rain. A major portion of a prayer I say several times a day goes something like this:

It shall come to pass if you surely listen to the commandments
that I command you today to love the Lord your God and to serve him with all your heart and all your soul,

That I will give rain to your land, the early and the late rains,
that you may gather in your grain, your wine and your oil. I will give grass in your fields for your cattle and you will eat and you will be satisfied.

Beware, lest your heart be deceived
and you turn and serve other gods and worship them.

The anger of the Lord will blaze against you, and he will close the heavens and there will not be rain,
and the earth will not give you its fullness, and you will perish quickly from the good land that the Lord gives you.

So those commandments you are supposed to follow include things like charity to the poor, upholding the rights of the widow and the orphan, not stealing, not exploiting workers, and most importantly, worshiping God before worshiping oneself or material things

Short form, unless God lied, GOPers are totally SOL when they pray for rain.

Yeah, well it will only get much much worse if things are not done to avoid climate change.

Here is the short form future of Texas.

1. It gets a lot hotter for a lot longer and crops fail as it rains less instate and rivers dry up.

2. Cattle that depend on that water and the plants they eat quickly go away in a tragedy of the commons as people try to hold on to their ranch at the expense of others.

3. Mexico gets devastated at a faster rate and you face hundreds of thousands of starving and desperate refugees. It will make the current immigrant situation look like a little trickle. They will not come unarmed either since they really have no choice.

4. Your state economy gets completely destroyed when places like Galveston and Houston are flooded out.

I approve of this more than praying for rain, because:

It’s actually a long standing Muslim tradition. Animals have to be slaughtered correctly in any case and doing so at home is not uncommon in many areas.

It can also be done for any celebratory or symbolic reason, such as buying a new car, then having a barbecue and party, and some meat will likely be given away as well.

Texas fires are pushing the state deeper into debt:

Since Sept. 1, the beginning of the state’s fiscal year, the Texas Forest Service owes $36.3 million for firefighting costs, according to Robby DeWitt, the agency’s associate director for finance and administration. Of that, $23.8 million is due the federal government for air support, he said. dfw.cbslocal.com

I really don’t get people who think that just praying for something is going to fix it. I know that the concept is a New Testament promise, but you’d think by now people would have figured out it doesn’t work.

Even though I’m not religious I understand the concept of praying as a meditation, praying to discover God’s will, praying to get yourself in harmony with things-as-they-are, and so forth. I just don’t understand why people think that God might be waiting for us to vote on whether we want drought, or someone’s cancer cured and then acts on it.

True story:

A few years ago, we were also going through one of our periodic droughts. Lubbock mayor David Miller proposed a resolution calling for a day of prayer for rain. The proposal was widely ridiculed and even made the national media, but the resolution passed. I was among those mocking it in public here. A few days later, a downpour hit Lubbock County. My hobby farm, which is less than half a mile from the city limits, got almost half an inch of rain, but no measurable amount fell in the city itself.

Today is San Jacinto Day in Texas, the 175th anniversary in fact.

Youtube Video

This has brought out the Secesh crazy at the Fever Swamp.

Sam Houston, the victor at San Jacinto, had a notably low opinion of secessionists.
He was removed as governor in 1861 for refusing to take an oath of loyalty to the Confederacy:

“Fellow-Citizens, in the name of your rights and liberties, which I believe have been trampled upon, I refuse to take this oath. In the name of the nationality of Texas, which has been betrayed by the Convention, I refuse to take this oath. In the name of the Constitution of Texas, I refuse to take this oath. In the name of my own conscience and manhood, which this Convention would degrade by dragging me before it, to pander to the malice of my enemies, I refuse to take this oath. I deny the power of this Convention to speak for Texas….I protest….against all the acts and doings of this convention and I declare them null and void.”

He also made this prescient prediction:

“Let me tell you what is coming. After the sacrifice of countless millions of treasure and hundreds of thousands of lives, you may win Southern independence if God be not against you, but I doubt it. I tell you that, while I believe with you in the doctrine of states rights, the North is determined to preserve this Union. They are not a fiery, impulsive people as you are, for they live in colder climates. But when they begin to move in a given direction, they move with the steady momentum and perseverance of a mighty avalanche; and what I fear is, they will overwhelm the South.”

I don’t really know how it works. hehe How’s that for an honest answer.

God is a source of strength. Faith is strength for most people. I don’t know if God listens to every prayer spoken by every person or any and all, but prayer can be healing for ME or in a group, for a lot of people. That is the power of prayer to me.

I think a rain dance probably borders on idol worship or ego worship. Most silly things that people do probably borders on idol/ego worship. I mean if Perry goes out and does a rain dance and it rains, he gets credit right? So was it God who made it rain or was God just listening to Perry - Oh dear, I don’t want to even go there!

If the entire world unites tomorrow to turn back climate change, we will still get periodic drought in this part of the world.

I think she means that its anthropogenic, but not necessarily warming related. We in the west have always assumed that the best years are “normal” and therefore routinely exceed the carrying capacity of the land. Not really a good plan.

Sure. The fact that Texas is carrying a human/cattle load the land cannot meet—and that California is carrying a human/vegetable load the land cannot meet—is an anthropogenic situation. So was the Dust Bowl, for that matter.

You can long for something without believing that the longing will produce a desired result. I’m sure that there are as many atheist who go bowling wearing their “lucky socks” as believers who do, however. It probably shouldn’t, but this sentence made me laugh:

“Good Friday is not a good day to get a pap smear.”

Support Planned Parenthood on Good Friday

We have a weekend of reason and lunacy coming up. On the reason side, atheists will be gathering in Iowa to discuss science and a sensible interpretation of the universe, taking advantage of a holiday none of us find particularly interesting. On the other side, that holiday celebrating the magical ‘death’ and imaginary resurrection of a weird Jewish mystic is regarded as also a good time to come out and oppress people. As is traditional, mobs of fanatics will turn out on Good Friday to surround local women’s clinics and harass and threaten the patients. Good Friday is not a good day to get a pap smear.

Michigan…. sheesh.

Among other things, the bills would apparently:

* Require non-tenured teachers who strike to be fired immediately. Suspend the teaching certificate of tenured teachers for at least two years or permanently revoke the certificate.

* Consolidate cases so that all employees alleged to have participated in a strike would be judged together; the time period for these cases would be greatly collapsed.

* The union representing the employees on strike would be decertified for five years. The state would order a new election with a different union. These penalties would apply even if no actual strike occurred, but if a union or its representative was found to “solicit or encourage any other person to strike” or to “conspire with any other person to cause a strike.”

WaPo opinion blog struggles with what is happening in the GOP:

Trump, Palin, and the GOP electorate

Donald Trump isn’t going to be the Republican nominee for president. But in a way, that’s beside the point: The odds are mounting that the actual nominee is going to sound very much like Trump, not to mention like Newt Gingrich and Michele Bachmann.

I liked Ed Kilgore’s column this week about Trump, which argues that while Republican elites will likely succeed in denying the nomination to Trump or any other rogue candidate, they’re still stuck with Trumpism:

This year, GOP voters’ hunger for radicalism is so great that it can be filled by essentially anybody. Kill off Trump’s candidacy and the demand will remain, leaving an opening for yet another demagogic charlatan to take his place.

What Republican politicians and leaders of GOP-aligned interest groups want is a presidential nominee — and if they’re lucky, a president — who they can rely on to be reasonable with them. That is, one who will stick with them on the big issues, or at least always treat them as allies and work to keep them happy. As long as Republican establishment figures think they can count on a candidate to do that, they’ll overlook his or her crazy rhetoric.

But Republican elites will do what they can to veto any real rogue candidate (as Trump would be if he really runs) who they don’t think they’ll able to rely on once in office.

That gets back to the original rogue candidate, Sarah Palin. What has hurt Palin as a prospective candidate, and has resulted in GOP elites turning against her publicly, is that they believe (probably with good reason) that she can’t be trusted.

The upshot: It has become less likely over the last several months that a real crazy and untrustworthy candidate will win the Republican nomination. Nonetheless, Kilgore is right about the appetite of the Republican electorate for Trumpism. Therefore, it’s become more and more likely that the eventual nominee will have to spend a lot of time and energy pretending to be crazy, or at least working at ways to appeal to a constituency that wants to hear crazy things.

The Overton window has lurched so far to the right that I suspect whatever GOP candidate finally gets the nod will like be almost as crazy as he/she sounds.

sale goths, same old dudes who are fandom greybeards, some young guys running the art show, same Moorcock fanatics, same people in the dealer’s room selling piles of Simon Bizley and Roger dean books

Completely illogical.

The only possible chance they have of making it rain is this:

“And the Flying Spaghetti Monster called unto Pirate Mosey, and spake unto him out of the pirate ship of the crew, saying 2 Speak unto the children of the seven seas, and say unto them, if any pirate brings an offering unto the FSM, ye shall bring your offering of spaghetti and meatballs or rum and fish head stew.” Piraticus 1:1

Sort of like in The Blues Brothers, where the band rolls up to Bob’s Country Bunker:

Elwood: “So, what kind of music do you have here?”
Bob’s wife(?): “Oh, we got both kinds. We got Country and Western!”

This scares me in more ways than one, because Sharron Angle is back like a social disease:

The move could clear the way for Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval to appoint Rep. Dean Heller to fill Ensign’s seat, giving the GOP congressman the comforts of incumbency and a leg up as he pursues a full term in 2012.
If Heller were appointed to the upper chamber, it would also trigger a special election in Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District, where Sharron Angle and former military commander Kirk Lippold are already in the race.

This scares me in more ways than one, because Sharron Angle is back like a social disease:

she’s just the top of the psycho pyramid, Angle has a hand shoved up her backside, someone else is operating, she’s not the leader, she’s barely present IMHO

My friends at EVO in Vegas saw her, (and giddily called me up to tell me minutes later) and all Angle’s fundraiser types, because they had events in the same hotels. Body language was such that she was this meek little thing in the wake of all the money

all ancient old biddies with pearls, fat bloated GOP guys in suits who looked like hammered meat, like those DAs in fear and Loathing, fleshy monsters, rich as hell, like Jabba the Hutt, all around Sharron Angle

And they all looked directly at the one hispanic guy in the group when my friend’s group walked through. Looked right at him like he was poison.

If they are the same, the act of praying is much more shallow than I thought.

Sorry I had to dash out.

I don’t think I said they are the same. I think they are similar. Much in the same way that speech can be considered a prayer, or a curse. Obviously if you use self-talk, you’re not directing it at a deity that can “get” you something, but you are still hoping that things will fall into place to your liking.

What I think we’re talking about is the power of speech, either to each other or to ourselves. Once something is out there, you can’t pull it back. A kind or ugly word can change your day. Gossip can ruin a person forever.

Many believers acknowledge that the world was created by the spoken word. (The Lord said, “Let there be light”. And there was light.) That is the power of speech. It’s part of our uniqueness among living things. The power to heal, hurt and create with words.

Or I guess one can say, “be careful what you wish for.”

391 hugh59  Thu, Apr 21, 2011 4:20:18pm

Getting back to the original topic, does it hurt anyone if a public official wants to call for a day of prayer? It’s not like they can force anyone to join in.

If I recall, Winston Churchill declared a day of national prayer right before the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk. I guess he was a fool for doing that. God and religion probably had nothing to do with the success of that operation; but maybe it gave some of the population comfort.

And Stalin rehabilitated the Orthodox Church for its morale value. Don’t think that was a deep conversion. Perry is somewhere on the Churchill-Stalin Scale.
