Rick Perry’s Brain is a Chicken Pot Pie

Rove’s brain is a refrigerator
Wingnuts • Views: 30,061

Our quote of the day comes from Jonathan Martin’s poignantly titled piece for Politico, “Is Rick Perry Dumb?

“If Karl Rove hadn’t been my consultant, I would not have been agriculture commissioner today,” Perry told the Dallas Morning News in 1994, adding: “My brain is like a chicken pot pie. His is like a refrigerator that is all very organized — pickles here, salad there.”

And obviously overcooked as well.

2 jamesfirecat  Mon, Aug 29, 2011 5:44:33pm

Its also like a refrigerator in that it sucks in all warmth nearby leaving behind only coldness in its wake.

Bad analogy. Chicken pot pie has a legitimate use if you're hungry. Goodhair, not so much.

I guess this means that Rick Perry is baked all the time.

I think Perry's brain is more like Kiviak -- a traditional Greenland dish consisting of a seabird stuffed inside a seal and then buried underground for up to six months until liquefaction.

Okay, maybe not the seabird and the seal and the six months, but "buried until liquefaction" seems to be appropriately descriptive.

The History of Pie

Chicken pot pie, another North American savory pie favorite, is usually filled with a cream-and-chicken based mixture, and topped with a savory pastry crust. The chicken pot pie was the first frozen pot pie available in the US, developed by the Swanson company in 1951 (and as the saying goes, the rest is history for TV dinners and frozen convenience foods.)

Rick Perry, the Swanson frozen entree of Presidential candidates - pre-processed, pre-cooked, and the packaging is prettier than the contents.

When I was matriculating in New Orleans, we would hit the Schwegmann's and buy a Swanson's Tuna Pot Pie and a Beef Pot Pie. Add a quart of Dixie--Surf and Turf!

As far as frozen pot pies go, Marie Callendar's is pretty good.

“Pilots execute flight plans,” Miller said. “They have a plan, they fly a certain pattern and that’s the way he’s always operated — he has a flight plan for what he’s trying to do and he executes.”

Someone created the flight plan, but it's not Perry.

I don't like my foods to be so mixed up. As a kid I hated my food to touch each other and I would have to finish a type of food before starting to eat another.

25 Killgore Trout  Mon, Aug 29, 2011 6:07:05pm

My biggest complaint against modern pot pies is the super secret crisping film they add to the packaging. It's some kind of grey film on the inside of the box that looks like it was developed by Aperture Science. It gives off a plastic smell that indicates some sort of toxicity to me. Other than that, I fully endorse the pot pie concept.

Bush wasn't stupid. Bush was just naive about how things would turn out, and so it led to really terrible consequences like Iraq. I am absolutely certain Bush really did think that Iraq had WMDs, and that the Iraqis really would come out with flowers and hugs. Maybe that's stupidity, maybe it's lack of experience. But honestly, I think he had some good ideas, but just didn't know how to execute them.

Bush saw the world in black in white: there were the good guys and the terrorists. Why do the terrorists hate us? They hate us for our freedom, of course! Uber-patriotic thinking like this sounds great on the campaign trail, but as we saw, often leads to disastrous real-world consequences.

Sure Saddam was an awful dictator, but illegally invading his country and overthrowing him squandered much of the sympathy we had around the world after 9/11, not to mention the fact that the Iraqis didn't react at all as we'd hoped/assumed. Do I think Bush invaded Iraq for oil or for revenge on his dad's behalf? No, I think he went in thinking it likely Saddam possessed WMDs and intent on liberating the Iraqi people. Korea was not meaningless. To have simply let the Norks conquer South Korea would have done the reputation of the USA and the UN intolerable damage. Both would have looked weak and incapable of stopping Communist aggression. Yes, tens of thousands of Americans died to prove were not weak, but that price was worth paying in my opinion.

Afghanistan was somewhat understandable at the time, though I was against both...but Iraq, wtf. They never attacked us; then we got this shock/awe b.s. and crud about not being nation-builders, while building the nation.

It was just a feel-good killing effort we could get away with, just so frightened, enraged cons feel safe and vindicated for a second. Disgusting.

I don't think the war was illegal (though I don't really care), and I think we would have lost the sympathy we enjoyed no matter what. Too many people want to hate us, and Bush was just their excuse. Other than those two points, I agree with. Bush did indeed fail to understand the situation in Iraq.

With respect, I don't think you got what I was trying to convey. When Bush was in office, no one was allowed to question him because "you don't question the president during wartime." Now that he's gone and we're still dealing with the effects of some of Bush's decisions, talking about them is "after the fact bashing." Yes, I know you weren't one of the people saying we couldn't disagree with Bush in the runup to Iraq, but you a minority in that regard.

Russian is hyping a new MiG:

Russia has announced that it will use its new (still in development) MiG-35D as the equivalent of the American F-35. This will be the low-end to the high end T-50 (the Russian F-22). The T-50 is no F-22, and the MiG-35D is no F-35.

The MiG-35D is a considerably redesigned MiG-29. The 29 ton MiG-35D is armed with one 30mm autocannon and can carry over (by how much is not yet clear) five tons of bombs. The big selling point for the MiG-35D is its offensive and defensive electronics, as well as sensors for finding targets on land or sea. This stuff looks very impressive on paper, but the Russians have long had problems getting performance to match promises.

The 27 ton American F-35 is armed with an internal 25mm cannon and four internal air-to-air missiles (or two missiles and two smart bombs), plus four external smart bombs and two missiles. All sensors are carried internally, and max weapon load is 6.8 tons. The aircraft is very stealthy when just carrying internal weapons. The MiG-35D has little stealth capability. The MiG-35D first flew four years ago, and there are currently about ten prototypes being used for testing and development work. The MiG-35D is expected to enter service some time before the end of the decade. The MiG-35D will sell for less than half what the F-35 goes for (currently over $120 million each).

Let me clarify- Bush had good intentions, but didn't understand the sad reality of real politik. A well-intentioned disaster isn't any less of a disaster, though.

It wasn't illegal. What law was broken? Congress approved it. Many things that aren't that good an idea are nevertheless legal.

And for that matter, though the cost far outstripped the Polyanna estimates, we did overthrow Saddam and that did liberate the Kurds, the Marsh Arabs, the Shia, and countless quietly desperate Sunni who weren't from Tikrit.

Say what you will about Iraq now, today's government doesn't quash demonstrations with nerve gas.

I don't think the war was illegal (though I don't really care), and I think we would have lost the sympathy we enjoyed no matter what. Too many people want to hate us, and Bush was just their excuse. Other than those two points, I agree with. Bush did indeed fail to understand the situation in Iraq.

"Illegal" is a bit subjective in this context, I agree. Non-approved by the U.N. maybe? My point was, it would have been better to build an international coalition and operate primarily through airstrikes (see: Libya) than go in solo with guns blazing and fingers crossed. Even if our allies declined, certainly not an impossibility, it would have been better to wait things out until the time was right for a regime change on the Iraqi peoples' time rather than ours.

Well he didn't conform his conduct to the war powers act. But presidents tend to hold that the law is unconstitutional, even if they do comply with its terms because it's convenient to avoid the fuss.

Until such time as the SC has ruled on the validity of the law, presidents will continue to either obey it while asserting that they don't really have to, or flout it while asserting that it doesn't really apply in the case at hand.

And let's take a moment to notice the semi-competent art. I bet the Snellenbergers have taken classes, maybe even have a degree or two between them. But the stiff, clumsy, vaguely ugly quality of the illustration is of a piece with the text.

When religious belief takes on a quality of grandeur, when it truly does exalt the human spirit, then it's hard for me not to get swept up in the moment. But this book shows a world without wonder -- flat words and images have condemned it to a sort of folding-chair spirituality, a cafeteria of the soul, a holy linoleum.[Link: seancraven.blogspot.com...]

On 26 August, the Sahrawi government and the Polisario Front issued a joint statement rebutting claims that 556 Polisario mercenaries were arrested in Libya, blaming the report on Moroccan propaganda. The statement asked "the new Libyan authorities, represented by the Transitional National Council", to immediately disavow the claims.

Air strikes alone wouldn't have done the job. Saddam had a State apparatus that was perfectly capable of winning a Libya style war in which we supply bombing support to the insurrection, while his infantry and light civilian vehicles mounting heavy machine guns and a bit of rocket artillery mop up on the very lightly armed rebels. Irregulars just can't stand up to that kind of force in open terrain, and in cities, we find ourselves constrained by the need to avoid blowing up civilians.

The only way to take down somebody as firmly set as Saddam is flat-out war. This should be kept in mind when talking about Syria. Assad is not quite so firmly seated on his throne as Saddam was, but absent major defections from his own army to a rebel side, his regime maintenance forces are all too capable of crushing dissent. And the kind of bombing we could stage from carriers just wouldn't be enough to turn that around. And don't even think of using Israel as a base. Any war with Syria would carry with it the risk of escalation, but war from Israel on Syria would certainly escalate.

Sadly, our nation can't wait like that and hold its political focus. Bush used a great deal of political capital to launch Operation Iraqi Freedom, capital he likely would not have had except for 9/11, and that 9/11 capital was bound to dissipate over time had he waited. If the Bush administration was to move at all, it had to be on our timetable, not that of the Iraqi people.

Moreover, given how tightly Saddam held power, there is no guarantee that he would not have lived for another decade or two, only to pass his power to one of his murderous sons.

It's not that we don't have a reason to stop Kim's misrule in NK. It's that we don't have the means to do so. Where war with Libya was feasible and cheap as wars go, war with Iraq, though feasible, ended up being very expensive; we can't afford to do that at all often. War with NK would be incredibly more violent, bloody, and expensive than the Iraq war. It would, just to mention one little detail, be a nuclear war.

We deposed one bad guy and unwittingly let a host of other genocidal lunatics take over. After years of fighting these monsters we created, what do we have to show for it? A fragile, embryonic democracy that stands a good chance of falling apart and descending back into chaos the moment we're gone. Oh, and a few thousand flag-draped coffins.

The bulk of which any imebcile paying attention to what was coming out of the Foreign Office back channels before the war could have told you was going to happen.

re: #144 Dark_Falcon

Sadly, our nation can't wait like that and hold its political focus. Bush used a great deal of political capital to launch Operation Iraqi Freedom, capital he likely would not have had except for 9/11, and that 9/11 capital was bound to dissipate over time had he waited. If the Bush administration was to move at all, it had to be on our timetable, not that of the Iraqi people.

Moreover, given how tightly Saddam held power, there is no guarantee that he would not have lived for another decade or two, only to pass his power to one of his murderous sons.

Fair enough, but is it really wise to use a tragedy like 9/11 to play world police? Kim Jong Il is set to pass the throne onto his son, but I don't hear anyone clamoring for an invasion of North Korea.

In Iraq, there were awful human rights violations going on and we found a plausible reason to go in and stop it. Regardless of official reason, the coalition stopped it.

I'll take that anyday.

The end of human rights violations is an unintended consequence, which means, in the world you've adopted, even unintended results justify the means.

My theory is that we don't want to mess with countries we know could trigger WWIII, but if someone like Saddam waves his dick in our face long enough, hinting that he *might* have such capabilities, we decide to bring the hammer down and make an example out of them. Christopher Hitchens:

Does the Texas governor believe his idiotic religious rhetoric, or is he just pandering for votes?

I happened to spend several weeks in Texas earlier this year, while the Lone Star State lay under the pitiless glare of an unremitting drought. After a protracted arid interval, the state's immodest governor, Rick Perry, announced that he was using the authority vested in him to call for prayers for rain. These incantations and beseechments, carrying the imprimatur of government, were duly offered to the heavens. The heavens responded by remaining, along with the parched lands below, obstinately dry.

Hitch really does have a gift for shredding some verbally. Note how he mocks Perry brutally, yet he does not sound frantic and overheated. National Review writer Florence King has called that the "art of cutting someone's throat without raising your voice". She also makes the point that most American commentators prefer the frantic and overheated approach, since they fear that Hitch's more subtle approach will be labeled "elitist".

But wait! We were sure, SURE, that Iraq had WMDs. Why were we so gung ho about that war? After all, couldn't have used bio warfare on us?

My theory is that we don't want to mess with countries we know could trigger WWIII, but if someone like Saddam waves his dick in our face long enough, hinting that he *might* have such capabilities, we decide to bring the hammer down and make an example out of them. Fine in theory, but it can cause some serious dilemmas in practice.

He no longer had the capability and the people on the ground stated as much.

We agree Dark but not for the same reason.

For me it was less about us looking weak, more about us protecting South Korean people from being taken over by the North Koreans.

Even though the Korean war ended in a draw we still managed to help prevent a great many people who turned to us for aid from being conquered.

I started out with a 400, then later a 130XE, lotsa good times playing Autoduel and Phantasie and Infocom games

But the ST (that i worked my ass off all summer for, hah) was where I became entranced with the possibilities O_O

I bought a 1040, and the wife bought a 520. After school I sold the 1040 because the job I ended up with needed a PC. I eventually bought the 520 from the wife. I still have it.

I used the 1040 for two 400 level graphics classes.

Fecking banks. Now they're firing people and going through some major restructuring. Lot of outsourcing going on per usual. I know several years ago they dumbed down the bank tellers and fired the older and higher paid teller and replaced them with kids. That's all you see anymore at banks is kids.

WTF Alabama?

Anti-Immigration law blocked by Judge

Among other provisions, the law would require schools to find out whether students are in the country legally.

In addition, it would make it a crime knowingly to give a lift or rent a room to an undocumented worker.

The state's police would also get sweeping new powers.

If, in the course of their duties, they come across anyone whose status is suspect, they would be able to detain them without question.

I thought once a person was in the country they were considered a US Person and protected by our civil rights laws.

Our tomcat is an indoor cat, but he makes every effort to get outside whenever he can, even though we know he won't stay out for more than a few minutes. He's gotten to the point now where he knows our daily routine, such that he knows what time to start noise that he wants out. When we don't stick to that routine, he gets all confused and even more anxious.

Poor thing practically sulked on Saturday when we had to keep him, since even at 12lbs, he'd have been blown away by one good gust from Irene.

Over the years, I've noticed that "civilization" is just a shiny veneer on old instincts and habits. We tell ourselves that we're different than our ancestors, but we've just found more advanced and clean methods of meeting the same goals. We spill a lot less blood, but the same instincts are still there, under the surface.

12 year olds on the Arizona/Utah border will sleep better tonight.

Fasting! It's what's for dinner!

Sweet dreams to them.

It might be best for everyone if he never comes out of that coma.

serious de-programming needed since these people let this happen. It can't be allowed to happen again.

Why, when you are wearing shorts, do dogs feel the need to sniff the back of your knee?

WTF Alabama?

Anti-Immigration law blocked by Judge

I thought once a person was in the country they were considered a US Person and protected by our civil rights laws.

It's not that simple. For instance, it is perfectly legal to discriminate in employment on the basis of citizenship. The U.S. government itself does that.

It is perfectly legal to deport someone who has entered the country illegally. It is not legal to deport citizens for being outside their home state.

The list goes on and on. Illegal aliens are persons under the law. It is not in any way legal to hire them and then cheat them of their wages, or to make slaves of them, and on and on. But they are not citizens, under the law. Citizens may vote. Illegal aliens might manage to vote, but the law permits turning them away at the voting booth. Heck, legal aliens aren't supposed to vote.

Illegal aliens, at a guess, are not required, or even allowed, to serve on juries. The differences in law between the rights of citizens, and the more limited rights of noncitizens here legally, and the still more circumscribed rights of aliens who are not here legally, are extensive.

I never wear shorts, but it makes sense. You're sweating there, and it's about nose height for many dogs.

I think they are following orders from the Cat Overlord.

Michelle Bachmann (R-Mars) says we are in the last days upstairs.

Should we go there or stay here where it is safe?
