Fantastic Four #45, December 1965: “Among Us Hide … the Inhumans!”

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Silver Age
Arts • Views: 41,879

It was December 1965 when I first got my hot little hands on this copy of Fantastic Four #45 — you can probably tell from the condition it’s in. With these stress marks and creases it’s not super valuable any more, but the colors are bright, the paper is white, and it’s still worth a lot more than 12 cents.

This issue featured the first appearance of one of my favorite obscure Marvel characters: Lockjaw, the giant bulldog with antennae.

I love Lockjaw. Have you read the "Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers" series that they've put out over the last few years?

When I was living in a foster home one time I read some Superman comics as did all kids. I was positively sure I could fly like Superman.
So I got a towel as a cape and climbed up on the garbage can and jumped off in a beautiful swan dive. I ended up in the hospital with a nasty gash on my head. I never read comic books again.

Yesterday I went to get my nails done at my favorite salon, which BTW happens to be run by Buddhists. They had the loudspeaker set to "Christmas Music 24/7" which included some of the most horrific "Christmas music" ever recorded.

I mean, a song "Here comes Santa Claus, Here comes Santa Claus, right down Santa Claus Lane" sung to the tune of "In the morning, in the evening, ain't we got fun!"

I would have ripped the speakers right out of the wall but I didn't want to ruin my nails.

According to Google's Santa Tracker, Santa has left Shannon, Ireland and should be arriving in the Azores in a little over 3 minutes.

I have noticed that most nail salons are run by Buddhists.

This is a Buddhist plot, to control all the fingernails and toenails of Americans!1!

They want you to put pennies on the belly of the fat little Buddha!

Stone's series is a horrendous bunch of drek:

Two early Cold War episodes illustrate the mendacious method of Stone’s film. Stone asserts that Poland was meant to be in Stalin’s hands since Russia had been invaded twice by armies crossing the Polish border, and that after Yalta, Stalin never betrayed his agreement to allow free elections. This was the Kremlin line at the time to a tee. It is Truman who is portrayed as untrustworthy and feckless by resisting what was supposed to have been a done deal.

The truth is that Truman made concessions to the Russians on the border issue between Poland and Germany, even winning the praise of another of Stone’s favorites, former ambassador Joseph Davies, known for his pro-Soviet views. Truman left his meeting with Stalin at Potsdam hopeful that FDR’s grand bargain with the Soviets was continuing. As time passed, however, Secretary of State James Byrnes—a villain in the Stone series—soon saw the grave dangers that the expansion of Soviet power in Europe and northeast Asia posed to the United States. Stalin was set to exert pressure on the western part of Germany, hoping to move the entire country into the Soviet orbit. Again, it was Stalin’s expansionist ambitions that led Truman to change American policy and abandon hope that the wartime alliance could continue in the postwar world.

Stone allows no critical opinions by scholars who have studied the Soviet archives to disturb his rehash of Communist propaganda themes. His sainted Henry Wallace opposed the creation of NATO, advocated abandoning Berlin in response to the Soviet blockade, denounced the Marshall Plan for European reconstruction as “the martial plan,” and justified the 1948 Communist coup in Czechoslovakia as a measure to thwart a plot by fascist forces. Precisely the Kremlin line.

The film’s narrative mockingly presents viewers with Truman’s diary entry in which he said that Wallace “wants to disband our armed forces, give Russia our atomic secrets, and trust a bunch of adventurers in the Kremlin Politburo. I do not understand a ‘dreamer’ like that.” But many viewers, hearing these words, will deem them far more accurate than Stone’s attempt to discredit them.

I used the Weekly Standard piece rather than the two in National Review to avoid the charge of a tainted source.

Well, over on Lew Rockwell's site they've dismissed it as retelling Soviet propaganda.

For once Rockwell's not wrong. Stone's handling of Truman's decision to drop the atomic bomb was particularly bad, simply spouting the Soviet claim that Truman dropped the bomb to bully the USSR, without giving even a glance to the mountain of evidence to the contrary.

It's a Wonderful Life ends well, but before the joyous Christmas morning George Bailey has to pass through a very dark night. He falls victim to despair, and Jimmy Stewart lets us see his pain. We believe he wants to kill himself, and it is from that place that he is rescued. Things do come out well, but the movie deals with some brutal emotions along the way.

Well, I thought it was the Japanese' claim before it was the USSR's claim. To this day Japanese writers believe this to be true.

You could always ask the new PM of Japan, one of whose grandparents was in the War Cabinet.

Spent time on it, but he used sources from only one side. And claiming Japan was about to surrender, which Stone did, is the kind of sloppy error that throws a historian's whole treatment of the subject into question.

The Japanese wanted a peace treaty by the summer of 1945, but they still thought they could get one that would prevent an Allied occupation and would give them the nucleus of a rebuilt military (they did understand that any battleships or carriers they still possessed would have to be scrapped or scuttled, but they wanted to be allowed to do that themselves).

I find It's a Wonderful Life too depressing to watch. Mostly because I find Pottersville a better place to live. Pottersville, for all its faults, has a thriving nightlife and a stable economy. Bedford Falls only has a moderate manufacturing economy, no obvious places to find excitement, and an oppressive lack of culture. Once the factory closes down, Bedford Falls will suffer depression and unemployment. Pottersville has backup industries, such as the nightclubs, that can encourage outside investment.

Walt never lived to see Disney World open, but even so he clearly cared about people and Potter does not. The argument can be made that while Mr. Potter himself is smart enough to keep things on an even keel, sooner or later things will be messed up by a successor who is also only in it for the money, but prefers a quick buck to long term returns. But the same could be said of George Bailey's successor as well. Much of America's current problems are the product of a heavy focus on short-term results.

Talked to my dyed-in-the-wool NRA gun nut friend today. He takes the usual positions in most respects, but he is 100% IN FAVOR of closing the gun show/private sale loophole. To do this, we would simply require that all gun transfers go through a licensed dealer, who would provide the background check and the necessary paperwork for a small fee. I can see FFL dealers supporting this since it would be a good source of revenue.

Christmas Eve and all is quiet at our house. Much better than Christmas Eve two years ago, when my husband was in the ICU and we didn't know if he was going to survive a pneumonia that was so bad it required surgery to drain.

This Christmas is much better. Presents are wrapped, dinner is eaten, dessert was a hit, and there is six inches of snow on the ground outside. It's still snowing a little bit, and the house has that wonderful feeling of cold outside and cozy warm inside.

Plus, hubby is snoring in bed right now with cats piled all over him. It's a good day.

For Americans, the dropping of the nukes on Japan ended the war and we kind of forget (maybe on purpose) that the nukes were more of a 1-2 punch - the second punch being the invasion of Japanese held territories in China by the USSR which pretty much wiped out the Japanese there (and the Japanese had most of their military in China).

We have a surprise white Christmas in Lubbock! Snow wasn't in the forecast at all until late yesterday. The stuff started about 3 hours ago, though, and shows no sign of letting up. It is the densest snowfall I have seen in Lubbock in several years.

150 A Mom Anon  Tue, Dec 25, 2012 5:17:52am

No snow here in GA, not that I expected any, but we do have some very lovely, thick fog. It kind of absorbs all the sound so it's oddly quiet. I am so not into the holidays this year, not sure why, but I just sort of gave up all the decorating and crazy preparations. Hope all of you have a great holiday, with lots of food and people you love all around. I'll just be happy when it's Jan 2 and things go back to whatever passes for normal.

No crime has ever been committed by someone executed by the state. Therefore deterrent works.

Besides a very successful acting career he was a WWII badass hero.

...He was among the first wave of U.S. soldiers to land at Normandy during the D-Day invasion and the only member of his Army unit to survive. He killed several Germans and was wounded in the leg. Later he was bayoneted by a young German soldier whom he killed with a rock. He was captured in the Battle of the Bulge and survived a massacre of prisoners.

For you anime fans out there I ran across the full movie "Paprika" in the english dub version on YouTube. Kind of an "Inception" like story where using a device people can enter each others dreams.

Of course due to a bad guy things get messed up and soon everyone is suffering from a common mass delusion even when waking. Will our heroine Paprika (who is herself only a dream alter ego of a real woman) be able to save the day and put things right? Or perhaps this all just a bad dream?

Good morning, & merry Christmas to all. Today's been pretty good so far, we seared the Christmas roast on a flat griddle on the smoker because it's way too large for anything else (our son buys it every year,) & it's now in the oven. We watched "A Christmas Story" and then turned on the local NBC TV station for music (they loop pre-recorded videotapes of all of the local high school Christmas Choir shows all morning,) as we opened gifts. Everyone seems to have gotten something they wanted for once, and we are putting out the happytizers.... (dishes of candy & nuts.)

I hope all is well in your world too.

Good thing that ex-felons are legally prevented from getting guns, well, at least if they buy them from a licensed dealer. Now if they steal them or buy them at a gun show or from an ad in the paper or craigslist then not so much... :(

Webster shooter left note detailing his plan

Before killing two Webster firefighters and critically injured two others, William Spengler Jr. typed a chilling note detailing his horrific plan.

At a news conference this morning, Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering released new details about Monday’s ambush.

Armed with a Bushmaster .223 semi-automatic rifle — the same weapon used in the massacre in Newtown, Conn. — a Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun and a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver and a stockpile of ammunition, Spengler set a “clear ambush on first responders,” Pickering said, and followed through on the threats he made in the typewritten note he left behind.

“I still have to get ready to see how much of the neighborhood I can burn down and do what I like best: killing people,” Spengler wrote in the note, which Pickering said was a rambling two to three pages long and did not speak to motive.

The full note was not released by police.

Salafi preacher applauds freedom restrictions in the constitution

In a symposium for scientists and preachers on the draft constitution held in late November, Salafi preacher and Al-Nour party member Yasser Borhami praised the draft constitution, saying that it “includes full restrictions which never existed in earlier Egyptian constitutions.”

Citing article 10 of the constitution which states, “the state and society shall be keen on preserving the authentic characteristic of the Egyptian family,” Borhami said, “This is an extremely important article since it places restrictions on freedom of thought, expression and creativity.” He added that non-Islamist representatives within the constituent assembly rejected the article and wished to remove the words “and society”.

“Even if they do so,” Borhami argued, “the parliament still counts as one of the state’s associations. The parliament can easily draft and pass the accountability act. Thus, we shall achieve our aims.” The accountability act he referred to is a law which establishes the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (CPVPV).

Report: Women at Iran Nuclear Plant Violate Code

An Iranian lawmaker is saying Russian women working in the country's sole nuclear power plant do not observe the strict Islamic dress code, though they are paid extra to comply.

Under Iranian law, all women must cover themselves from head to toe in public.

A Tuesday report by the semiofficial ISNA news agency quotes Mahdi Mousavinejad, a representative of the southern Iranian port of Bushehr, where the plant is located, as saying violation of dress code by the Russian workers has had a "corrupting and negative impact" on his constituency.

Mousavinejad says he will report on the case to the Iranian parliament.

Check out the War Nerd's take on this:

There's little doubt that the Soviet invasion of Manchuria influenced the Japanese decision to surrender, but it was the atomic bombs that were the greater factor. The USSR lacked the ability to invade the Japanese Home Islands in sufficient strength to overwhelm the defenses Japan had, thus it was the US (with aid from the other Anglosphere nations) that posed the mortal threat to Japan.

Burglar sues Calif. homeowner, 90, who returned fire

(CBS) GREENBRAE, Calif. - A Northern California homeowner who police say survived being shot in the jaw during a burglary is now getting a "punch in the gut": The burglary suspect is suing him for returning fire.

The Marin Independent Journal reported the suspect alleges that Jay Leone, who is 90-years-old, negligently shot the intruder.

According to CBS San Francisco, suspect Samuel Cutrufelli is charged with two counts of attempted murder after Leone was shot in the face on Jan. 3. Police said Cutrufelli was wounded when Leone returned fire.

Leone has vowed to countersue. In an exclusive January interview at his bedside at Marin General Hospital, Leone told CBS San Francisco he had to outwit the burglar who held him captive at gunpoint.

Even a Bay Area judge is going to throw this asshole's case out. The dirtbag shot a retired police officer first, and is now trying to claim the retired cop wronged him by returning fire. The only word that fits this is 'chutzpah'.

I remember my boy asking me at about the time children ask; "Dad? Is there really a Santa Clause? Is he real?" I replied that indeed he is. He's right here. And I pointed to my heart. And here, as I pointed to his. He's as real as you want him to be in spirit. Merry Christmas to one and all and may the future hold many Happy New Years.

Being the son of god doesn't make you god. But happy birthday anyway (please tell your old man not to send me to hell for all eternity because I was a dick to you).

Terror cell busted in West Bank

A joint Shin Bet, police and IDF investigation has uncovered a burgeoning terror infrastructure established by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in Ramallah and the adjacent villages.

Two members of the terror cell, Ashraf Abu Aram and Muhammad Zeitoun, both Ramallah residents, confessed to plotting a kidnapping with the purpose of negotiating the release of PFLP leader Ahmad Saadat.

Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine

wild card up my sleeve
thick heart of stone
my sins my own
they belong to me, me

I think an Islamist takeover is a likely outcome from ousting Assad. The West is trying to tip the scales against it but I don;t think there's anything we can do about it.

Shitbags in the news again...

Wikileaks to publish over 1 million documents in 2013

Julian Assange’s latest announcement from the balcony of the Ecuadorian Embassy, London, promises more from Wikileaks in 2013.

..."Next year will be busy," he says, "Wikileaks already has over a million documents being prepared to be released, documents that affect every country in the world."

Snow is falling in Dallas/Ft. Worth right now... Happy Christmas to all. Had a disgustingly tasty southern breakfast with the girlfriend's family this morning, endured some Christy prayer stuff but survived somehow... The white gravy was cooked up by one of the relative's husbands from Utah who is Mormon, there were jokes about it being Secret Mormon Gravy that turned you Mormon if you ate it. DELICIOUS. They don't drink, though, and I just realized I have had a Christmas without booze for the first time in years. I'm going to go fix that right now, will probably sit around drinking rum and playing Portal 2.

Logical. Lots of companies have promotional tie-ins with games or movies. If Jeep and McDonald's can do that, it is logical that Colt and Glock would do so as well. I do really think it's a bay thing either. Gun manufacturers didn't systematically lie about their products like tobacco companies did, so they should be allowed marketing tie-ins.

/Not sarc, I mean it.

My mom made prime rib from grass fed-beef last night. You may find it amazing that I never had that before, but I'm from the Bay Area where restaurants don't even serve steaks (too American for us commies, probably).

It was goood.

:)

I always say Merry Christmas in real life, but I'm tempted to go over to the wingnut blogs and say "happy holidays" at people as a troll.
