Doh!
James McPherson has an excellent history of the civil war. Chapter titles include “the revolution of 1860” and “the counterrevolution of 1861”. Voting on secession, county by county, showed that the correlation between percentage of slaves in the county, and the vote, was sky high. Places such as Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, and Delaware, all with legal slavery in 1860 but very little of it in reality, stayed with the union. Eastern TN and Western VA voted against secession (Appalachia, poor whites and hardly any slaves), and WV seceded from the secession and came back into the union.
The war was about slavery. Period.

I feel like people think that the mere fact that Obama is black means that he has to single handedly solve all race issues, as well as being politically inexpedient. You know, if I were a reporter on the White House beat and got to ask the President a question, it’d be along the lines of:
“Mr. President, would you care to comment on the documented evidence that reporters are being harassed and in some case threatened with death by armed police in Ferguson? Does it bother you that this clear violation of the 1st Amendment is being tolerated by Gov. Nixon?”
And, yeah, I’ll say it: Obama’s going full MBF every time he talks about Fegurson.

For those who were wondering about weird people showing up in their timeline?
This week, the company tested a change to its core product that could alter the service in a small but important way. According to Mashable, Twitter is altering the timeline of a small number of users, so that they see tweets from accounts they don’t follow.
Right now, users only see tweets for three reasons: They’re from an account that user follows; they were retweeted by an account that user follows; or they’re an ad. Now, a user might see tweets from an account that someone whom they follow follows, or a tweet that someone they follow favorited…
So even if you unfollow someone, some tweets from them are likely to show back up in your feed from what I am getting

Period.

I’m that way when driving on highways over 3 lanes. I can’t. I get physically ill and have horrible panic attacks. I’ve tried everything and I simply can’t figure out how to get past it. I can drive anywhere else on secondary roads with no problem, maybe a bit of anxiety about getting lost, but that’s remedied with a GPS and getting there a couple of times. I can’t drive on 285 around Atlanta or on 75 or 85 in or around the city until the roads are well outside populated areas. It makes life smaller than I’d like, but having a serious panic attack on a 6 or 8 lane highway where people are driving 80mph or more is dangerous, not just for me but for everyone else. It sucks.

re: #179 Lidane
Heights don’t bother me. Falling does.
Ever see Pretty Woman? There’s a scene where Richard Gere can’t even look over his hotel balcony. That’s me. I get weirded out on balconies or ledges, but I don’t mind glass elevators. I’d also go on the London Eye if I ever make it to the UK. Skydiving or bungee or anything like that? HELL NO.
I’m seriously afraid of heights if I am on a balcony or ledge, or in a tall building or on a cliff or anything similar that is physically attached to the ground. I have been a pilot all my adult life, though, and have never been afraid of height in an aircraft even though the height is enormously greater. How do I square this? I actually talked to an aviation psychologist about it once many years ago. He told me that this paradox is fairly common and it happens because the aircraft is detached from the ground and becomes the ground to my sub-conscious. It may even be part of the appeal of flying for me; to be free to move in the sky, defying my primordial fear of falling.
The glass floor in the CN Tower in Toronto is the scariest high place I have visited in person. They have a glass section in the floor that you (but not I!) can get out and walk on. It is 1122 feet straight to the hard Canadian concrete below. EEEEEEKK! I could not get within 10 feet of it even though there were unconcerned children out playing on it. I wanted to retreat even from there and hug the nearest rail for dear life. My wife thought it was hilarious. “Toddlers go where red hot chopper ace fears to tread!” I pointed out that I was not an ace and would not come back to that frightful place unless they let me bring a parachute.
They have something even more frightening now, the Edge Walk. This is obviously only for un-evolved types whose ancestors never learned to fear falling out of the home tree.

Sadly, I think Ezra Klein is, at least sort of, right: vox.com
I think people need to change the climate in this country before a President can give a transformative speech, rather than expect a transformative speech to change the climate. Politics play a role, and it’s naive for people to think otherwise.
When you have Fox and the likes if Limbaugh, et al, this will never happen. The GOP and their varied mouthpieces create the environment. Transformation is, IMHO, impossible.

Mississippi suspect accused of shooting man over mixed-race grandkids
A Mississippi man charged with shooting and beating his mother’s boyfriend has been accused of carrying out the attack in anger over the victim’s mixed-race grandchildren, police said on Monday.
Jeffery Daniels, of rural Smith County in central Mississippi, has been charged with aggravated assault in connection with a Friday evening incident that left Craig Wilson badly beaten and with a gunshot wound to the stomach, police said.
Daniels’ mother told police that he carried out the attack in anger over a visit from Wilson’s young grandchildren, who are mixed-race, said Smith County Sheriff Charlie Crumpton.
[…]
Roughly two weeks before the incident, a cross was burned in front of Wilson’s house, Crumpton said. Police do not know who burned the cross, the sheriff added.

So lets keep this in mind for Ferguson-
Shoot an unarmed man in the head under color of authority and leave town with your identity protected. Take a picture of a protest, go directly to jail. Despite court orders. Anyone Still Not Clear on who is wrong ?
When is a non-exempt record exempt? When is a record claimed exempt non-exempt? These questions are raised with the inconsistent positions being taken by the St. Louis County Police Department regarding public records requests for the still unreleased “Incident Report” of the shooting of Michael Brown. (Ironically - the “Incident Report” of the alleged robbery prior to the shooting has been widely disseminated by the St. Louis County Police Department).
The ACLU of Missouri filed a public records request for this very Incident Report on August 12th. [See the ACLU request and denial here].On August 13th they were denied the request in writing. The statement was that it was exempt because “There is an on-going investigation” at this time.
But this is not a valid exemption - and the Police Department and its officials knew it. The only thing exempt under Missouri’s public records law, during an open-investigation, is the “report of the investigation.” The fact that other records, including pre-existing public records, are used in or may be used in an investigation does not render them thus exempt under the law.

They don’t have to go to jail, or be arrested. Just ‘detained’. The photos from detention are much less interesting, and less incriminating.
They don’t want to jail ‘em, just spoil their view for a while, and intimidate the rest.

They don’t have to go to jail, or be arrested. Just ‘detained’. The photos from detention are much less interesting, and less incriminating.
They don’t want to jail ‘em, just spoil their view for a while, and intimidate the rest.
Screw the National Guard time for the 101st Airborne. And not to guard the command center. To guard the protesting populace from the city county and state police.

If you actually open the PDF and look for the table, it’s about the race of the victim, nothing about the race of the perp. All it means is there were no victims who identified as being of two or more races.

Yeah, Post Racial America my ass. I’m really feeling it living in the part of metro Atlanta I’m in. God. Mostly white, lots of money (not my family, lol, we’re below the average income in this area), not much sense or empathy. Every year that’s passed since 9/11, the racism has become more and more blatant. It’s sickening. It’s being passed down to the next generation too, which is more disgusting. I have some hope, the kids in their late teens and early 20’s seem to be less assholish than their parents, but it’s still there in that generation too. I wish it would just die already.

Table 42 relates to perceived race of offender, and has a strange looking 0% for white offender and black victim that is presumably what the wingnut is derping about. That result is flagged with an * for small sample size, so this is hardly “case closed”.

This is one reason I dabble in “prepperism.” I think there is a finite possibility of a complete social collapse, instigated by a major natural disaster, economic crisis, a massive terrorist event or, more likely a coincidence of two or more of these. The authority structure in this country is riddled with corruption and hubris, from “asset forfeiture,” to the sadistic killing of family pets, to military toys, to plain murder and a massive contempt for the citizenry. Bullies like this cannot handle a real threat, and I think the system could collapse completely and catastrophically given the necessary circumstances.

ABC Nightly news made a very good point. Brown is 6’4”. To have been shot in the head at that angle, he had to have been on his knees.
I think it is more likely he was falling over when he got hit in the head. The shot that went through his eye came out near his jaw and re-entered at his collar bone. Unless he was standing directly over him and shooting straight down I don’t see how that happens otherwise unless you have a weird ricochet. If he was standing close enough to shoot straight down like that I would assume there would be GSR all over him.

I’ll second what klys said, depends on who you’re following. I’ve unfollowed people who tweet too much (some do it literally every few minutes for hours on end).
An important thing to do is go though your account settings. If you’re accessing Twitter via the web, use the gear icon in the upper right. Once you’re there, the main things to check on are 1.) Security and privacy, 2.) Email notifications, and 3.) Apps. I check #1 and #3 every few months, just to see if anything has changed or if anything suspicious shows up.
Also, have a strong password and use Tweetdeck for your desktop machine (if possible). I use Tweetbot for my iOS devices. What else? Oh, I use totally separate email accounts for different things—some belong to me (or rather my domains, where I can add/edit/delete accounts), and others are GMail or Yahoo accounts (mostly GMail). All of that is totally separate from personal, real life stuff.
I know that may sound kinda cloak & dagger paranoid, but at least if one of my accounts is hacked, then it’s only that account that’s compromised and the others are safe (because they use different emails, passwords, etc.) Obfuscation is the first line of defense/threat mitigation.

As an experienced old person (65) I advise you to learn and practice the official rituals: Doddering around the grocery store turning packages over and over looking for something, finding out where the nearest restroom is as soon as you enter a new place, and (most importantly) leaning out the door occasionally and screaming “Get off my lawn, you goddamn punks!”

I get the feeling that Captain Johnson is basically sent out to push the agenda given to him by his superiors, much as Colin Powell (seen above in the RT ad) was sent out to be the face of the Bush administration.
BTW, it’s pretty fucked up (read: appeal to racism) for RT to use a picture of the only black man in a position of authority in the rush to war in Iraq instead of, say, Bush or Cheney, or hundreds of other prominent white people who pushed for the war.

To maintain the 0% figure you also have to assume that none of the offenders in the 25.2% “Perceived race of offender not known or not available” was white.

this was a situation where a OEM sent us a driver DLL written it seems originally in C#. it malfunctioned in our environment but they were unable to reproduce the problems - a number of problems - locally
they asked to remote in to our machines to debug but of course you can’t step through a debugger under those circumstances. i sat there watching them attempt to use some esoteric .net tools to pin down the crash points, with no success whatsoever
i then asked them ‘why don’t you guys write some debugging output into the code and send me that version to run here?”

WILSON: NO ROOM FOR EVOLUTION IN ADVENTIST SCHOOLS
Seventh-day Adventist world church President Ted N. C. Wilson forcefully asserted that life has existed on the Earth for only a few thousand years, not millions of years, as he opened an educators conference in Utah on Friday, and he said teachers who believe otherwise should not call themselves Seventh-day Adventists or work in Church-operated schools.
Wilson spoke to a crowd of mainly teachers at the start of a 10-day international conference on the Bible and science in Las Vegas, Nevada, during the opening session of the conference, prior to traveling to St. George, Utah. The location was chosen for its easy access to three geological sites that the 350 participants will explore between conference sessions on archaeology, geology, paleontology and biology.
[…]
He cautioned against associating with scientists, humanists and “some who claim to be Seventh-day Adventists” who have embraced an evolution-based creation theory.
“Do not believe them nor participate in this manipulation of biblical truth regarding creation and the visible commemoration of creation—the Sabbath,” he told conference participants. “In essence, evolution is not a science.”

A church employee who teaches theistic or pure evolutionary theory should not even exist in a Seventh-day Adventist school or church pulpit.
And the first comment on Wilson’s official transcript is:
Cellophane • 7 hours ago
The church is responsible for maintaining the purity of its message. Dismissing teachers who cannot promote the full Biblical truth is the kind of control God expects by the church. We do not control anyone’s conscience, but we should control the membership to include those who promote the fundamental truths

I like being behind someone who makes the checker issue a credit then re-ring their entire shopping cart because they forgot to use a coupon, then argue because they didn’t get the “buy four” price for only buying one.
It’s a great way to start the day.
This is why you never get in line with my brother in law, he invariably, always, gets delayed forever in line by some kind of problem ahead of him. It is some kind of curse or something…
I have learned when out buying BBQ supplies or whatever with him to take my stuff to a different line. Not that it matters much because then I end up waiting anyway. I thought my sister was stretching the truth when she joked about it early in their marriage, but nope, it is real.

Coupons are basically irritating. It’s a pretty close to a tax levied on people that don’t spend all their time (and plenty of other people’s time) screwing around with coupons.
My mother-in-law, back in the ‘70’s, belonged to this “coupon club” (scam) that did some shady stuff. Basically she clipped coupons and then turned them in to a “coupon broker” and got cash back even though she didn’t buy anything.

Why OVOMIT ordered ERIC the THUG HOLDER to directly interfear with a LOCAL POLICE MATTER ? Holder does not have any jurisdiction in this case NONE, or any jurisdiction over local police their !!!! NONE ! Local police should tell holder , OVOMIT , to get lost ! Or arrest both for obstruction , interfering with an investigation, abuse of office, intimidation against a victim or witness, This is truly an outrage

The Elites in the Colonies involved in nation-building may have been not so religious, but the colonists on the whole, having already been through the “awakenings” and settling of European religious fanatics , were religious, to very religious.
Then yes, later, there was an explosion of new sects (Mormonism, JW, SDA, etc.) in the rapidly growing United States, that then carried on the religiosity though with variations of teachings and practices.
The apple really hasn’t fallen far from the tree.

This only black man happened to be the “face” of the US in the UN. The one who made the case for the invasion before the whole world. The image has long ago become iconic. Its use is fully legitimate and non-racist as such.
PS: of course, the fact that it was used by RT sucks, and that RT seems to have chosen to distort Powell’s facial features sucks, but those are different issues.
