Pvt. John T. Appler Uniform Missouri History Museum Collection in St. Louis Missouri
Pvt. John T. Appler lived in Hannibal, Missouri, when the war broke out. In 1861, he was among those who answered pro-secessionist governor Claiborne F. Jackson’s call for troops by joining the Missouri Volunteer Militia before joining the 4th Missouri Infantry (Confederate) in early 1862. Appler fought in several engagements in Mississippi, including the Battle of Corinth, where he was wounded in the shoulder and taken prisoner. Appler escaped, rejoined his unit, and participated in the Vicksburg campaign. He was badly wounded at Champion Hill and left for dead on the battlefield. On again, he was captured and hospitalized but recovered from his wounds. After the war, he moved to St. Louis, where he worked as a printer for the Republican. He was active in Confederate veterans’ organizations for many years and died at the age of 80.

COMING SOON TO THE HELL PLAZA OCTOPLEX
Kirk Cameron is a godbothering nuisance who once starred on a weirdly successful sitcom that ripped off everything it knew from Family Ties, which should tell you a goddamn lot. (Sorry, Kirk.) Kirk was the Michael J. Fox figure on the show. Yes, and Bob Lind was The New Dylan.
Anyway, Cameron has built a lucrative second career making movies aimed at Bible-banging shut-ins and fringe Christianists loop-de-loops who think these movies were what the gospels had in mind. He’s got one coming this November, and it’s a real doozy. Watch out, you atheists and Mithras devotees, Kirk Cameron owns your sorry asses.
Is it about The War On Christmas?
Why, yes, it is.
I do love me some Charles P. Pierce

In 2014 the number is already over $50 million and by election day the total will be ????
All of it untraceable back to the donors that gave it to the front groups with no reporting requirements. So not only can corporations finance campaigns with no limits on contributions, they can do it totally anonymously.

I’ve put a question in to Glide support asking them to confirm via a blog posting that messages are in no way user editable after they’ve been uploaded to their cloud. I know this is the case because I’ve seen their UI, but it would be nice if we could point out a definitive statement from Glide to the dead-enders.
53 | goddamnedfrank Aug 30, 2014 1:04:47am |
Here’s the pertinent section from Glide’s website, under About:
Why not send videos with a messaging app?
You could, but that would take ages. Messaging apps require you to record, preview / edit, and then upload - whereas Glide is already sending your video message the moment you start recording.
So as we stated before, Glide starts streaming your file to the recipient and to their cloud simultaneously, so that the recipient can watch it in real time or later, or both in real time and then again later.

Cameron said some of the claims that will be addressed in the film include: the notion that Christmas is really a church co-opting of winter solstice celebrations, that Jesus was not born on December 25, that Christmas trees are pagan and that consumerism is overshadowing the true reason for the season.
…never mind the historians, the theologians in his own religion would happily tell him the truth if he would listen. Instead he is just spreading ignorance and calling it the truth because…Jesus!

We respect the rule of law and expect the judicial process of sovereign nations to protect other U.S. citizens who might find themselves in similar circumstances in the future. We will continue to monitor the case and work with the Mexican authorities as this case proceeds through the Mexican judicial system. We continue to urge the Mexican authorities to process this case expeditiously.

Considering that Congress has appropriated $2.1 billion since fiscal year 2008 to implement the Merida Initiative, calling upon Mexico to ignore the rule of law for Sgt. Tahmooressi seems a bit inconsistent.
The Merida Initiative is an unprecedented partnership between the United States and Mexico to fight organized crime and associated violence while furthering respect for human rights and the rule of law. Based on principles of common and shared responsibility, mutual trust, and respect for sovereign independence, the two countries’ efforts have built confidence that is transforming the bilateral relationship.

When that man was allowed to contact his consulate wouldn’t have made a difference in the case: He was clearly guilty of the murder he was convicted of. Commuting a sentence of that sort of triviality not related to his constitutional rights or actual guilt would have been a mistake.
The case you refer to was also remarkable for the division over it in Bill Clinton’s cabinet. While Secretary of State Albright wanted the execution halted and the death sentence commuted, Attorney General Reno got behind Texas and pushed.

As I remember he was very likely guilty, but do you think the Mexican government is going to treat the Marine with any special consideration after Perry told them (and the Pope) to pound sand? The execution was only a few years ago.

Speaking of fun on the Mexican border:
Border Patrol Agent Fires At Armed Militia Member Near Rio Grande
A border patrol agent fired several shots at an armed militia member while chasing a group of immigrants Friday near Brownsville, Texas.
Border Patrol Spokesman Omar Zamora told the Associated Press that agents were pursuing a group of immigrants when one agent spotted a man holding a gun near the Rio Grande.
The agent fired four shots but did not hit the man, Zamora said. The man then dropped his weapon and identified himself as a militia member.
The unidentified man was not arrested and appeared to have permission to be on private property where the incident occurred, Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio told the AP. Lucio, whose agency is involved in investigating the incident, said the man was wearing camouflage and was carrying either a rifle or shotgun.
The sheriff said militias really aren’t needed at the Texas-Mexico border given the number of law enforcement agencies already working to secure the area.
“It just creates a problem from my point of view, because we don’t know who they are,” Lucio told the AP.
Naturally, the Keyboard Kommandos over on Twitter are all OBUMMER DECLARES OPEN SEASON ON PATRIOTS!!! ELEVENTY! when the truth is much simpler — a bunch of dipshits in camo and carrying guns are going to cause this kind of problem for the actual law enforcement officers on the border.

This is my favorite part:

Country commando goes out to play soldier, interferes with law enforcement, shits pants, and surrenders.
THAT’S why I don’t believe the “border patrol better be careful” rhetoric like this from Militia sympathizers.
But if a Border Patrol Agent ever kills a militiaman or vice versa, then things will get very ugly very fast.
If a militiaman kills an agent, the rest of them will disappear and deny they ever even went near the border out of fear. And the same thing will happen if an agent accidentally kills one of those stupid fuckers because he thinks he’s some kind of sentry for illegal activity.

Social bombs are NOT harmless, Darth, not when they involve people getting killed. When those three Israeli boys were kidnapped and murdered earlier this summer, the social bomb that detonated among the ‘Settler’ community in Israel resulted in a Palestinian teenage boy being murdered in reprisal.
Note: Do however remember that Israel has arrested the Jewish killers and charged then with murder, while Hamas refuses to even say the Arab killers did anything wrong.

The militias are going to the border over the objections of law enforcement. If they get shot or shot at, especially during a Border Patrol chase, they only have themselves to blame for it. They put themselves into the line of fire to try and prove they’re tough guys.
And if one of those guys shoots an American and/or a Border Patrol agent? Throw the book at them. Hard.

In answer your first sentence: No, I’m not making such an equation.
Your second sentence misses my point: I was not talking about ‘payback’ in terms of governmental reactions, I was making clear that unlike Hamas Israel took proper action against its murderous assholes.
And lastly you can have a downding for saying Israel killed Palestinian children as payback for the murders of its citizens. Israel didn’t launch any incursions or fire any weapons into Gaza until Gazan Islamists started firing rockets into Israel. Again.

Of course they’re calling mostly for the use of armed force, because armed force is the only thing that can destroy ISIS. The “Islamic State” does not have some territorial grievance we can rectify; Its grievance is that the United States exists. It murders men after they surrender as a matter of routine, rapes women and forces them to convert to Salafism, it loots towns bare and then rigs them with explosives. Such an organization cannot be reasoned with, it must be eliminated by main force.

And now for something completely different:
In Russia, Sign a Mortgage and Get a Cat — But Only for Two Hours
BY Thomas Stackpole
Russia’s largest bank wants to lend you a cat. Isn’t that nice?
What did you do for the good folks of Sberbank, the Moscow-based lender, that would make them want to drive a van to your home and drop off one of their 10 cats — which they keep just for occasions like this — so you can hang out with it for not more than two hours? Well, they just lent you the money for the house and, as Russian superstition has it, it’s good luck for the first creature to cross the threshold of a new home to be a feline. And, yes, the cat has to be returned to the bank.
This neighborly campaign from the friendliest of all Russian banking behemoths is a ploy to cash in on Russia’s mortgage market boom. According to the Central Bank of Russia, demand for home mortgages is on the rise. People “watch[ing] their savings lose value amid a sliding ruble and rising interest rates” are the driving factor, according to the Moscow Times. Cats, apparently, are the key for Sberbank cashing in.
The excerpt is short because the remaining two full paragraphs are insufficiently respectful to the Feline Overlords. Mr. Stackpole clearly fails to grasp that Sberbank’s Feline Overlords are using this offer to ensure that the bank is only loaning money for cat-suitable homes.

Our brave soldiers managed to save the peacekeepers from a massacre by securing an escape route for the Filipinos near the Israeli-Syrian border.
The militants had captured 43 Fijian soldiers from one UN post and transported them to where the Filipino troops were stationed.
They demanded those troops hand over their guns in exchange for the men and women.
But before any deal could be made, the Filipinos managed to escape from the post and were left isolated by the jihadists who were chasing them down.

I missed this story last month, but its relevant for those following events in Ukraine:
9K333 Verba MANPADS now in service with Russian military
The newest Russian man-portable air defence system (MANPADS), the 9K333 Verba (“Pussy Willow”) has been finally issued to the Russian armed forces, having made its appearance with the Ivanovo VDV division after passing Army testing in the summer of 2011 and being confirmed for production in late 2011.
The Verba is an advanced weapon in several ways. It features improved engine performance and a heavier warhead (approximately 1.5 kilograms), as well as extended range. The new MANPADS can now hit targets at ranges of 500 to 6,500 meters, altitudes of up to 4.5 kilometres, and at a speed of up to 500 meters/second.
However, the real innovative features of the 9K333 are the updated warhead seeker and fire control system. The seeker has been upgraded from the previous-generation Igla-S missile, enhancing accuracy and improving the seeker’s ability to filter out interference, improving its performance against countermeasures. Unlike the seeker on Igla, which uses two separate IR sensors that cross-check against one another, the Verba’s seeker makes use of three, making it even harder for a target aircraft to disrupt the system using decoys.
The 9K333 launchers in a unit are linked to an Automated Control System, which tracks potential targets before they are within engagement range, and automatically assigns the task to the launcher crew that is best poised to fire on the target. This is claimed to reduce the Verba crews’ reaction time by a factor of 10 (from a previous time of 3 to 5 minutes). Furthermore, according to Colonel Andrey Musienko, the commander of the 98th VDV Division’s Air Defence Regiment, “the use of the automated system avoids incidents related to human errors, such as friendly fire attacks on a plane or helicopter.”
The aircraft/SAM spiral continues.

We also didn’t finish the job. Leaving Saddam Hussein in power was a consensus decision, but IMO it was the wrong decision.
The coalition would have fallen apart if we’d tried to go to Baghdad. We had 80 countries standing shoulder to shoulder with us, including most of the Arab nations, and they’d have been majorly pissed off (so majorly we’d have had to fight them too, and their troops were right there next to us, within spitting range. I think we even shared comissaries with some of them.)

For that matter, (as was said here about 10 days ago) even the Sanford, FL police promptly canvased the area and interviewed after George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin. That the Ferguson police showed no interest in finding out what really happened is beyond telling; In my mind its clear evidence of a cover-up.

The shot which hit Brown in the forearm could have come from the front or the back. They don’t know because arm is so mobile.
If his arm was down at his side as it normally is then the shot came from behind. If he was facing officer he had to have his arm raised or in front of him for the bullet to come from the front.
On the autopsy drawing the mark you see made on the back of Michael Brown’s arm is where the round entered.

ISIS Delenda Est.
Seriously? You’re making ISIS the Carthage to America’s Rome?

Though he never actually had a mustache in real life. But here I go again, talking about historical facts and not popular legends.
Most people wouldn’t buy something labeled Red Baron if they knew who Manfred von Richthofen really was. He was a crack shot (he was seriously into hunting and in learning to hunt he was taught how to shoot) who developed into an excellent pilot as well. However, he was also a ruthless man who focused on attacking enemy planes he could catch unaware and who felt little to any regret about the men he’d killed.
Ultimately, Richthofen was most influential as a leader, devising new tactics to adapt to the changing balance of the air war on the Western Front. He also played a key role in developing the concept of “flying circuses” of fighters that could be moved rapidly from one part of the front to another on railroad freight trucks derived from those used by traveling circuses.

If you read George H. W. Bush’s book you’d have read all the reasons he decided not to do that.
Mostly because it went past the UN Security Council authorization regarding the removal of Iraqi troops from Kuwait. People don’t realize it but when Bush Senior was talking about a ‘New World Order’ he was talking about a world ruled by law as personified in the UN.
He also listed the problem that an invasion would cause the U.S.…which was exactly what happened when his idiot son invaded.

Never is a long time…Glass Harp 1972 in a TV studio…live.
And it allows me to remember one of my favorite Ohio bands. Glass Harp played our high school in ‘72, and by the looks of the guys, I’m thinking it was right around the same time this video was made.
And for music buffs…check out Phil Keaggy. Even Jimi was impressed with Phil’s wonderful chops. Glass Harp recorded at Electric Ladyland studios.

Cool. Some friends and I caught them in ‘72 or ‘73 at Thiel college. We were youngin’s out for a good night of music. Our music teacher took us (though I lived close enough I could have rode my bike). Saw them in the concert center my grandpa did the electrical work in while he was doing freelance electric work.
Used to go to the Idora Park Ballroom and catch shows there too. Saw Maynard Ferguson about 5 times there. Ahhh the days of good, affordable shows.

I’d say Boelke was more influential than Richtofen. He’s the man who, in my opinion, formed air combat into an actual military tool than just a bunch of dilettantes flying mostly for fun and with little purpose.

It’s obvious that our failure to send US troops into Mexico since 1916 has caused them to disrespect our authoritah.
Actually, the one battle of World War I on American soil was fought in Nogales, Arizona/Nogales, Mexico on August 27, 1918. It’s called the battle of Ambos (Both) Nogales. The battle was fought between US soliders and Mexican Carrancistas (this was during the Mexican Civil War) and their German advisors. The result of the battle was the placement of a chain-link fence along International Boulevard, which (unfenced) had marked the border between the two countries.
Why do I know this? Because I used it for trivia the other day on our daily technology update call at work.

I’D much rather live in this world, now that in the past. The past was really, REALLY nasty.
horse shit it in the streets, lack of reliable clean water, bread with weevils in it. No birth control, No flea prevention for pets. …
I’d really hate to have to depend on a Fire Brigade I’d paid a subscription to.
I could go on and on.
If you had to live 700 years ago, you’d rather be Aztec or Maya than any kind of European. They had indoor plumbing (hot and cold), cocaine, tequila, chocolate and popcorn. (the ripping-your-still-beating-heart-from-your-chest thing didn’t happen to Aztecs, that’s something they did to POWs from neighboring nations).
