Glenn Greenwald and Pals Throw Matt Taibbi From the Train

An amazing picture of total disarray
Media • Views: 38,451

Wow. This is an extraordinary statement from Greenwald, Poitras, Scahill and Cook, throwing Matt Taibbi under the bus and backing it over him several times: The Inside Story of Matt Taibbi’s Departure From First Look Media - the Intercept.

In June, Taibbi, Greenwald, Poitras, and Scahill wrote a joint letter to Omidyar outlining their principal grievances—the lack of clear budgets and repeated and arbitrary restrictions on hiring—and making clear that a failure to resolve them would jeopardize the feasibility of both projects.

That letter led to lengthy and often heated discussions. But they were productive: Most of The Intercept’s problems were eventually resolved. The magazine received a substantial budget, which Cook was free to use as he wished without consultation with First Look, and The Intercept resumed hiring a team of talented reporters, editors, and researchers. The site began producing stories more regularly, morale improved significantly as oversight from First Look diminished, and the team is free to do the reporting it wants to do without interference.

For a time, it appeared that Taibbi’s project had also found the right path. It, too, received its own multi-million-dollar budget, began to hire more reporters, filmmakers, and editors, and set a launch date for September.

But because the site had not yet launched, First Look continued to focus on organizational and corporate issues, and managers actively supervised and at times overruled Taibbi’s management decisions. His relationships with both First Look managers and some Racket employees who reported to him were strained.

Taibbi and First Look disagreed over the functionality of the website, the timing of its launch, which designers and programmers they would use, Racket’s organizational chart—even, at one point, over office seating assignments.

But wait… that’s not all.

These simmering problems came to a head this month when a Racket staffer complained to senior management that Taibbi had been verbally abusive and unprofessionally hostile, and that she felt the conduct may have been motivated, at least in part, by her gender. Temple conducted an investigation, and First Look determined that while none of the alleged conduct rose to the level of legal liability, the grievance bolstered their case that Taibbi should not be the manager of Racket. Among their concerns were the staffer’s claims that Taibbi had been privately criticizing First Look managers, particularly Ching, that Taibbi’s abrasive demeanor was alienating some on his staff, and that Taibbi instructed Racket staff to resolve any grievances directly with him rather than going to upper management.

On October 10, according to Taibbi’s account, Temple and Ching told Taibbi that he would be immediately stripped of all managerial responsibilities pending their investigation. (First Look managers dispute this account, claiming that Taibbi was never stripped of any duties.)

Taibbi was adamant that the complaint had no merit, and rejected any demotion or change in his responsibilities. On the day he was confronted by Temple and Ching, Taibbi left the office and—aside from one staff meeting he attended, after which he was instructed by Omidyar not to come back until they reached agreement on his role—did not return. He repeatedly told First Look that he would resign if it did not reverse the decision to reduce his managerial duties, and was insistent that he would accept no changes that could be construed as an acceptance on his part of the validity of the employee complaint.

Just go read it all; it’s a jaw-dropper. These excerpts only scratch the surface of the dysfunction.

Clearly Greenwald and his comrades knew this story was going to come out soon, so they decided to get out in front of it first and spin it their way. All these months they’ve been playing it like everything was just great, no problems, we’re redefining journalism over here and it’s cool — but behind the scenes it was a nightmare.

This ain’t over yet, folks.

“After months of struggle and negotiation, The Intercept has arrived at the point where it can function effectively: with full editorial freedom and an ample budget.”

Not forgetting those really really really really long deadlines.

An inside look at the offices of First Look Media:

Hold on a minute here.

When people were asking if Omidyar had some ulterior motives or might try to shape the coverage of FL, Glenn Greenwald was sneering at them for being so foolish as to question his wisdom in signing up.

I thought that as long as Greenwald was free to publish whatever he wanted, he didn’t care who signed his checks?

Seems like an awful lot of drama around FirstLook/Intercept considering what little work they’ve done.

Which is it Charles? Thrown from the train, or thrown under the bus? Both, thrown from the train and then under the bus? /mixed metaphor alert

Fact is that the whole enterprise they put together was a mess - too many high strung egos that don’t like to play nice with anyone around them. Prima donnas. And Greenwald.

Omidyar saw that things weren’t working right, so he’s already cut back his funding from what he claimed would be a $250 million plan.

But this posting shows just how badly things are going behind the scenes. That all of them felt compelled to write a response to Taibbi’s departure speaks volumes. They each have their own egos to protect.

This isn’t an outfit that does journalism. It’s more opinion advocacy mixed with hagiography.

More inflammatory from Taibbi’s perspective was Omidyar’s demand that Taibbi immediately terminate his employment agreement with First Look and become an independent contractor, a change Omidyar argued would free Taibbi of the constraints that come with being a corporate manager while diminishing his authority to act formally and legally on First Look’s behalf (early on, Greenwald, Poitras, and Scahill all opted to be independent contractors rather than First Look employees in order to maximize their freedom to speak out and act)

Of course, in terms of employment, corporate is almost ALWAYS a better position to be in than independent. As a contractor you DO have more freedom, but you are also ineligible to receive practically any company benefits.

That was actually tried and outlawed, about the time CCJ was born. The owners of a lead-acid battery plant tried to require it of female workers based on a twisted attempt to ‘protect’ the unborn. OSHA told them to clean up their act—reduce the exposures.

Arizona school board votes to remove pages from biology textbook

An Arizona school board has voted to remove information about contraception methods from a biology textbook after a conservative majority decided it fell afoul of a state law that says materials should give a preference to childbirth or adoption over abortion.

The members of the Gilbert Public Schools board, which covers at least 38 schools and 39,000 students mostly in Chandler and Mesa, voted 3-2 on Tuesday night to excise two pages from “Campbell Biology: Concepts and Connections.”

By redacting, we are not censoring,” board member Julie Smith told 12 News in Phoenix. “This school district does offer sexual education classes. If we were censoring, we would not offer anything on this topic whatsoever.”

Welcome to South Carolina politics:

Former House Speaker Bobby Harrell gets indicted, pleads guilty to six counts of spending campaign money for personal use and drops out of his race AFTER PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY STARTED VOTING.

SC Election commission, appointed by Haley (R-Hell), votes unanimously that oops—this election won’t count, the Republicans get a do-over and a special election because God forbid a Democrat should win a race against a criminal.

Because he was disqualified from the race, the commission suspended voting in the race on Tuesday and called for a special election. The House race featuring Harrell, Tinkler and Green Party candidate Sue Edwards will appear on the ballot on Election Day but the votes won’t count. About 1,000 voters in the district have submitted absentee ballots.

thestate.com

I think the Dems new strategy should be for every candidate to drop out of their races a week before every election—then we wouldn’t have to have elections at all and no seats would ever be filled. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

How the fuck would Chuck know about how pre-Menino Boston was? What was he, like 5 when his mayoral tenure began. And, I’ll add, pre-Menino Boston was pretty much a shithole, at least compared to it today. High crime (double Chicago’s current murder rate) severe race problems, disrepair. The city had been hemorrhaging population for decades. Today, it’s one of the richest, coolest, smartest, nicest (and I don’t mean the people, they are definitely not) cities in America. And this comes from a guy that hated living there.

I’m not sure how much of this I would attribute to the mayor since cities overall have been on a upward trend the last 20 years. But it just seems mean-spirited and plain ignorant to say he ruined Boston (unless you are nostalgic for the gritty days when only the strong survived.)

Nope. Anti pregnancy employment contracts weren’t outlawed until the 1978 Pregnancy Discrimination Act. No court that I’m aware of has ever applied the 13th to either pregnancy clauses or anti-abortion laws, where the comparison would actually be more appropriate. Also, religious employers like Catholic schools can still fire employees via morality clauses, such as unwed mothers who become pregnant. The fact that such morality clauses are applied unequally, being rarely applied to men who father children outside marriage, is a feature, not a bug.

Leaflets found at the site of the Marine Corps headquarters in Quantico, Virginia, Wednesday may have ties to the international terrorist organization ISIS, a source told the Tatler today. The leaflets, which portray the flag of the Islamic State, include a message in Arabic that says “We came from Mexico on a train.”

A train? That sounds like something from a bad lip read video.

Here’s how well the FDA is handling the assignment of substances covered by the Controlled Substaances Act: Marijuana is a Schedule I drug which puts it in company with heroin, Ecstasy, LSD, DMT, Etorphine, etc.

The criteria for Schedule I?

[W]hen it comes to a drug that is currently listed in schedule I, if it is undisputed that such drug has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States and a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision, and it is further undisputed that the drug has at least some potential for abuse sufficient to warrant control under the CSA, the drug must remain in schedule I. In such circumstances, placement of the drug in schedules II through V would conflict with the CSA since such drug would not meet the criterion of “a currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States.” 21 USC 812(b).

Put that in your pipe and smoke - just don’t get caught.

No such thing as a “happy medium” where official (State and/or Federal) regulation of pharmaceuticals is concerned; just more Drug War Theater to justify increasing budgets. Sadly, Mrs. Jay C is a chronic-pain patient (with a certifiable 17-year history of such), and obtaining a steady supply of the Scheduled medications she needs becomes a ever-more-irksome chore with each passing year. Despite the increasing number of hoops we have to jump through, I can’t see where most (if ANY) of the restrictions are likely to reduce the quantity of prescription meds available for illicit sale and/or abuse - though if inconvenience for legitimate users is an intended effect, then they’re working like a charm.

To counter upchuck’s heinous comment about Boston Mayor, Menino, from Charles P. Pierce, a true Mass. denizen:

He made Boston a welcoming place, perhaps the first time in the city’s history, dating back to when they were hanging Quakers on the Common, that such a thing could be said unequivocally. People came to Boston from college and stayed. Artists flocked to loft space. The gay community increased both its visibility and its political and cultural influence, culminating in the Goodridge decision that legalized marriage equality. Menino oversaw this cultural earthquake with dignity, and with aplomb…

“Visionaries,” he once famously observed, “do not get things done.” But he was a visionary in his own way. His vision was a melding of a modern city that still had distinct neighborhoods, but neighborhoods in which anyone was welcome to live and to work and to rise the way he had from Hyde Park. He made Boston interesting because he made it a more interesting place for more interesting people to live.

(Bolded part probably why upchuck hated him.)

Just read Charles’ page info on this bit with The Intercept, etc.

You know what I am seeing in all of this? The future.

I fear this is the future of professionals at work and not being able to work together. This is only going to get worse when you start to introduce all the dudebro, libertarian. me-me-me, never-been-told-no but everyone is a winner class enters into it even more. This may be the beginning of big problems for our whole society.

More examples:

The healthcare issues when viewed in the light of the Ebola panic.

Politics…does anyone need a better example?

Sports…more about the star/individual stats than the team.

Race issues that everyone stupidly thought were over in the 60s back again, maybe as strong as ever, just in new masks. And with more colors!

And there are probably many more…too depressing to think of them all.

So what this Intercept dust-up means to me: Omidyar has now found he is possibly the world’s richest cat herder.

Good luck!

Everybody watch though. There may be way more cat herding in the future. Maybe we can all learn from this.

FDA was soo worried that drug addicts were raiding their grandmother’s meds so they had the brilliant idea “Hey, let’s take away the meds from grandma so the junkies can’t take it!”

Have any of the docs tried to get you to switch to the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor class (anxiety/depression) drugs like Cymbalta?

I have a good friend that happened to, with bad results. It totally messed up his head while on it. I won’t go into details, but after showing him some others that were prescribed Cymbalta discussing their issues in a forum…he began to recognize it was the drug causing some big issues. He no longer is on it.

He is though hoping medical marijuana comes to Ohio. Or he is going to be going to Colorado and I’ll lose a close friend.

People told him over and over again that maybe getting in bed with an activist billionaire wasn’t a good idea, and his response was essentially “STFU, don’t you think I know what I’m doing?”

Now he’s going to try to tell us that he was shocked—SHOCKED, I tell you!—that Omidyar kept trying to meddle editorially (and not in a “Hey, could you, I dunno, make sure you have actual supporting evidence for these claims?” kind of way) and so he was forced to part ways?

Hey VB, I definitely feel your pain (no pun intended) on the FDA.

I take Adderall for my ADD and it’s becoming so heavily restricted now it’s insane. The last time I went to pick it up, the Pharmacy Tech couldn’t find it. Eventually he figured out why: It was kept in a time locked safe he didn’t know about. Cue me having to wait even longer to get my legally prescribed medicine.

My wife also has a diganosed, incurable condition that gives her chronic pain. Fortunately she found a pain management group that would give her Percocet, but you should see the headaches she has to go through to to get it. Also, whenever she goes to the ER she frequently fights with them about pain meds. They almost always try to give her the low level stuff (Lortab) but she’s taken so many pain meds because of her condition Lortab is completely useless to her. Despite telling them this, they frequently refuse to prescribe her anything stronger.

There’s GOT to be a better way to deal with this problem.

Omidyar almost certainly made him sign some kind of agreement not to bash the company or him. That’s very standard with these kinds of deals.

It’s hard to imagine that Taibi or his lawyers would be stupid enough to sign a unilateral NDA, these kinds of deals usually have obligations that flow in both directions. This story being published by Intercept / First Look would seem to absolve him of any obligation he had to honor his end of things.

The Shining, Candyman, Pet Sematary. Can’t go wrong with the classics really. I’d also recommend a movie called Dead End. It’s from 2003 I think and on Netflix streaming last I checked. It’s about a family who gets stuck in the woods after taking a shortcut home on Christmas Eve. I know it sounds VERY B level but it’s actually quite passable considering its budget and lack of big name actors (Ray Wise being a notable exception).

Think one of the things that’s really been lost in modern horror films is atmosphere. Used to be that the scariest thing in the horror film was the build-up, not the payoff. Now? Now it seems like gore and jump scares are what’s treated as “scary.”

I think ours was the latest Hunger Games. We get out a little more often.

Now watching Raul Julia chew the scenery in The Addams Family. It was a sad day when the world lost him.

^^^isn’t it funny how hidef and surround sound has changed movie viewing habits considering 3d or lux levels with dining and drinks hasn’t really captured a replacement for what we might achieve at home. Now when I can pause a flick in the theater to silence a chatter or take a bathroom break perhaps the industry will be able to suvive more on something more dvd and bluray sales, lol.

Funny how technology changes paradigms.

Last movie I saw that I thought really had to be seen in a theater was Wall-E. The first half (on future Earth) had a visual expansiveness that was lost on the small screen. The second half (on the spaceship) not so much. On the other hand, when i saw it in the theater it seemed to me that the two halves didn’t fit together very well, but I didn’t get this feeling from the home video.

The mature form of Groot’s species is robust and heavyweight, which causes the organs of acoustic generation to become stiff and inflexible. Looking at the Best Buy website, you can easily do something for under $500. Several options under $250 before tax.

I don’t have any good experiences with a particular brand at this point, although I hate Sony with a fiery passion and would never recommend their products to anyone, so maybe avoid them.

Apple certainly has a good rep at least when it comes to dealing with problems down the road but you are going to pay through the nose for it. They are excluded from that under $500 number.

From a specs standpoint, even if all you are looking at is web-surfing, I still might recommend looking at more than the basic 4GB of memory. That’s really the primary spec I would consider in a laptop for those purposes. There’s some options there that have 6GB and that would probably be fine. (Honestly, 4 is probably fine, but it’s hard to replace so having some room for it to grow isn’t a bad plan.)

We started that here in Kentucky and, I believe, in Ohio to shut down the bogus “pain management” clinics. Kentucky had one hell of a fight with Florida over this because we shut down so many pill mill clinics that the dealers were finding it cost-efficient to drive all the way to Florida and back (and I know one personal friend who was found dead in a rest area after over-dosing on what he was bringing back from Florida to sell right here in Kentucky).
However, the GOP PRIVACY!!11!! is just bullshit. Follow the money on who makes the most money on this and who are the donors to the politicians.

It’s taking me a long time to get through it, and not so much because of the graphic details. It’s how these people (adults and children both) are mind-warped by their upbringing. One character in particular is breaking my heart.

Tbogg has a great article out on the First Look debacle

Beauty

This afternoon the founding hires at First Look — Glenn Greenwald, Laura Poitras, and Jeremy Scahill, along with editor-in-chief John Cook — used The Intercept to self-cover the story in an oddly passive-aggressive way that laid out the rationale for FLM’s decision along with some serious “Shit is fucked up and bullshit around here but we don’t want to blow this sweet high-paying gig” subtext.

Oh hell, it wasn’t even subtext — they all but admitted that Omidyar promised them unicorns and then delivered donkeys painted like zebras just like the ones you get your picture taken with in Tijuana.

Can’t pick a particular film, but when it comes to books, I have to say that the one I’m reading right now (John Sandford’s “Bad Blood” is very disturbing and making me think very hard about mothers who were raised in an extremely closed religious community and are accused of and charged with “allowing” their children to be victims of child sexual abuse.

It’s taking me a long time to get through it, and not so much because of the graphic details. It’s how these people (adults and children both) are mind-warped by their upbringing. One character in particular is breaking my heart.

Sandford has a misogynistic streak through his work that is hard to ignore, but the man is such a amazing wordsmith I read him once or twice a year anyway. I don’t know if it is his journalistic background, but the words practically beg to be read on the page.

Right now, Alma Flood is breaking my heart.
I’m at the point in the book where she’s trying to find solace/answers in the very Bible that was used to warp her, all the while her two daughters are being abused by her own father who abused her. And I’m thinking about how that whole “how could a mom not stop it??!!??” that gets thrown out. And how someone raised to think that behavior, not matter how painful, was “normal” and even “godly”, so shut up…

I love the pellet stove. Very efficient wood burning, no smoke. It’s $5 for 40 lbs. at Costco. When it’s really cold we’ll go through 40 lbs a day, which last year we had about 20 or so days of that. Wyoming’s Campaign And Classroom Balancing Act On Climate Change

[…]

Macker’s challenger, incumbent Marti Halverson, objects to a small but controversial part of the NGSS, the part that attributes climate change to energy development. :

“Human activities, such as a release of greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels, are major factors in the current rise in Earth’s mean surface temperature (global warming).”

Halverson has emphasized several times that she thinks climate change is real, but she doesn’t believe there is proof that links it to human activity.

“What caused global warming in the past? What caused the Ice Age, when there were no humans walking the earth? …Whether humans or energy development is the cause of the current global warming or climate change, I’m in no position to say,” she said. “And frankly I don’t think there is anyone in a position to say definitely.”

At approximately 7 a.m. this morning, Dana Long, husband of Democratic State Sen. Long was processed, arraigned by video by Magistrate Court #2 and given an unsecured bail of $250 before being released.

That guy is annoying. I made it for 3 1/2 minutes before I shut it off. My kids will probably love it.

Reddest of red areas. My shock.//

Well, the lower Mississippi valley is sort of purplish, as long as the Dems have plenty of Je$u$ in their campaigns.

My point was, that many of the most productive farms in America are coincident with US government payments.

Tea Partiers are in denial of modernity, part of which is modern economics, which includes the economics of a large nation state like the US, where coordinated government agriculture has lead to higher production and thus a richer country.

Denial of the need to work as a collective for the benefit of the whole is one of the characteristics of tea-partyism, which is blindingly holding on to a belief in hyper-individualism, an individualism that in reality doesn’t exist.

OK—this is a hilarious campaign ad for Ginny Deerin, who’s running for SoS in SC.

I fully intend to, at some point, have friends over, get smashed, and watch [Twilight].

If you must watch that movie, you HAVE to get the Rifftrax commentary track. It’s the only way to watch that movie IMO.

Denial of the need to work as a collective for the benefit of the whole is one of the characteristics of tea-partyism, which is blindingly holding on to a belief in hyper-individualism, an individualism that in reality doesn’t exist.

It never did. Things like hunting large and dangerous game, clearing fields for planting, barn raising, corn shucking, and many others were done collectively. The teahaddis believe that just because they can each raise a huge mound of shit in the morning that any one of them could do anything. Their excuses for not yet having done those anythings are numerous though unanimous in never placing the responsibility on themselves.
