Well let’s hope that at least some of the nutty Republican governors elected in 2010 will be out of jobs tonight. It’s not going to be a good night on a Congressional level which is unfortunately to be expected but let’s hope we get some good new governors tonight.

Damn already called for him. Gonna be a long night I reckon. Well I look forward to the Turtle actually having to govern. So to paraphrase James Buchanan to Abe Lincoln, “I hope you sir are as happy getting here as I am leaving here.” Reid also is a savvy minority leader at that.

What’s remarkable is Crist did that as a Republican governor. Really I understand politics but I think Grimes ran too far away from Obama. I mean come on trying to hide that she even voted for him. Weren’t the polls showing that ACA was popular in Kentucky and in fact Kentucky had a successful expansion. If I were her, I would have said, yes I i supported him, we may not always agree just like I know you won’t always agree with me but he was responsible for a policy that has helped out our state immensely. Now I am not a politician obviously but I really think that would have been more wise than acting like she may not have voted for him. But then again and perhaps Backwoods Sleuth can tell me I am vastly underestimating the president’s unpopularity in Kentucky.

Repost from last thread

Evening Lizards. Went straight from work to the polls. Voted either D or I. If there was only a R candidate, did a write in using a valid local name. Then I got home and opened up the browser to see this.

Attorney General Wasden warns Idahoans to beware of Election Day voter scam

Short story is this.

Complaints reported to the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division indicate that someone is calling potential voters and offering to pay them $25 for their votes.

/// Gee I wonder who they are wanting people to vote for?

It’s not an R I can assure you of that. I can only wonder that if after the election, a D actually manages to win an office if some of these “calls” will suddenly see the light of day as proof of voter fraud.

Yes, I actually think this is a real possibility.

16 HappyWarrior  Nov 4, 2014 4:30:41pm

Wow just talked to my Mom. Last voter at the precinct with 25 seconds to spare.

If tonight is the price we pay for having re-elected Obama two years ago …I consider it worth it. Midterms are rarely kind to the party that holds the presidency. My sky will still be up there tomorrow, and we all know the presidential campaign shit show starts then.

Who knows, another two years of obstruction and even the low-information voters might start to notice.

I know it’s a bad night here but I am holding out hope that Foust may beat Comstock here. Not like she’s a prize but Marshall would immediately have been in the Bachmann, Gohmert, etc type of Congressperson. They’re going to take it as a wingnut mandate, when in reality, I don’t even know if we can draw any conclusions from this election. And when their stupid wingnut policies fail to pass the President’s desk, they’re going to get mad and throw tantrums and complain about “obstructionist Obama”. Further exposing their childishness and lack of suitability to run a modern first-world nation.

The funny thing is, we all know that a Senate victory will embolden them, thinking they’ve won and now they have a mandate. Obama’s veto (and their inability to overcome it) will come as a severe shock to their enfeebled wingnut minds.

Obama using the veto will be added to the Articles of Impeachment.

not sure how politics in America is gonna change until the media model does… because as of right now, they’re not informing the public regarding the issues and the implications of the stands on those issues by politicians and what they represent.

Ain’t gonna happen. All they want to do is make money now. The best way to do that is to make everyone happy and not piss anyone off at the same time. So they dance around actual news and opinion and give everyone warm glop.

Really, I am no fan of the right either but the conditions that led to the anti-Jewish pogroms in Russia had festered up for centuries. I can’t see anything like that happening here. Not to say that Anti-Muslim extremism isn’t a problem in our country- it is but this comes off to me the same way that Mark Levin claiming Obama’s going to go Mussolini the next two years.

I think there is a very ugly undercurrent of scapegoating by US RWNJs, and such scapegoating notoriously has no limits on how bad it can get. However, the country thus far is not really going for it politically.

Thus the threat of RWNJ pogroms in red states in the next two years is zero because of political realities imposed upon RWNJs, as opposed to any real restraint on their part.

The real fun won’t start until the 114th Congress opens. That’s when the Republican majority will be sworn in and seated. I don’t see how a Republican Senate would allow any filibuster at all. The script they want to play for the next two years (if they win) is to send a mountain of garbage to Obama and dare him to veto it all.

If GOP garbage dies in the Senate because of a filibuster, the deep-seated need of RWNJs for political theater would not be adequately met.

The trouble though has been that the Republicans are great the political soundbyte. And the Dems suck. It’s the thinking man’s curse. When people actually listen and look at the policies, you’d know that the the Dems are by far the more fiscally responsible party but Joe Voter just hears “cut taxes and wasteful spending” and he thinks “Well who can argue with that?” I was reading about Maryland’s GOP candidate for governor, Larry Hogan, and his tax plan would actually make things worse not better there but he’s been running on a campaign of cutting taxes and that’s the sort of thing your average voter likes hearing. I am not saying the average voter is an idiot but the fact is the R’s are great at the soundbite.

No matter how you fall
it shouldn’t bother you at all
It could take more to overcome less in a day
no matter how you break
you shouldn’t be the one to take
your own opinions as they twist in their own way
when all she wants is to be left
off to the side and counted with the rest
all she wants is to be spared
from voting for a candidate who doesn’t care
Though many more have been provided
when the only one decided
is someone who’s left to wait
and any promise worth fulfilling
what when only one needs selling
isn’t one to leave till late

No matter how it’s read
only so much can be said
about subscribing to a point that has no ground
No matter how it feels
your speculation isn’t real
nothing can be gauged until it comes around
when all she wants is to be left
Off to the side and counted with the rest
All she wants is to be spared
From voting for a candidate who doesn’t care
And though the end may seem divided
every story is two sided
but it’s only yours you’ll know
and truth be told if you are willing
then that promises fulfilling
is what only time could show

178 ipsos  Nov 4, 2014 5:27:34pm

The most important thing Democrats can do right now is to figure out how to begin making inroads in state legislatures ahead of the 2020 redistricting cycle.

Everything else between now and then is largely baked in. If the Rs pull out a Senate win tonight (or in January), it will be razor-thin and will be reversed when they’re massively on the defensive in 2016. 2018 will be a wash for the Senate.

That leaves the House. Until Democrats can begin reversing the monumental gerrymandering of the 2010 cycle, we’re structurally in a hole long before the first vote is cast or the first dollar spent. And we only fix that when we start focusing on fixing the state legislatures, even in the red states.

This is by no means too early to begin making that happen. It may even be too late.

Absolutely. I didn’t see any canvassers in the neighborhood for Foust or Warner. The Dems groundgame is a lot better than it was say in 2004 but they’ve got to find ways to get their base out like the GOP can. I guess it’s part of the problem of having a diverse base.

re: #178 ipsos

The Democrats really need to bring back the 50-state strategy. The GOP gerrymandering of the House districts can cut both ways, because a lot of GOP seats could be lost if get out the vote and contesting every district is taken seriously, especially in 2016 (presidential race).

Rep. Cory Gardner (R), Colorado

There’s little doubt that this Colorado representative is perpetually ready to rage. He’s said as much on numerous occasions, once telling reporters that he was “cool with all kinds of depraved shit” and that, “If you’re not gonna get your security deposit back anyway, you might as well party as hard as you can.” And considering his aggressively pro-fracking stance, you can tell he’s definitely eager to fuck some shit up.

There were a few up my way that were left to linger in the absence of a decent nationwide strategy. In NY-23, Tom Reed is a fairly weak R incumbent who could be defeated with a focus on heavy turnout in Democratic Ithaca. The Ds had a decent candidate this year but didn’t support her enough, and she’ll probably finish 8-10 points back. They might lose Dan Maffei in the Syracuse district, and they’ll almost certainly lose the North Country, too. That’s a net 3 seats just in this fairly blue state. Add that up around the country and the balance could shift pretty quickly.

Arguably I think the most important elections are your local elections. Your state legislators and that. They play a role in setting the congressional districts. Tip was right. All politics is local. Someone needs to instill that into Democratic voters who only turn out for the presidential election.

Very true. More evidence that progress could be made in 2016, even in the House. In any case, (D) voters are more fickle than (R) voters, so even though I approve of (D) gerrymanders where possible to counter what the GOP is up to, gerrymanders are probably less reliable for Democrats than for Republicans.

299 thedopefishlives  Nov 4, 2014 5:59:34pm

I had an interesting thought this morning: A fractional voting system. Rather than voting for people, we would vote for issues: “I am in favor/not in favor of stronger gun control.” “I am in favor/not in favor of legalized abortions.” Etc. The candidates’ names would never appear; rather, they would have a weighted percentage of a vote for each response - so, say, Candidate A could be 55% in favor of gun control, and Candidate B could be 80%, and these weights would be based on (actual or projected) voting records. Voting in favor of gun control would then result in 80% of a vote cast for Candidate A and 55% of a vote cast for Candidate B. At the end, the computer would calculate the total and cast a single vote for the candidate whose weighted vote totals came out the highest. Thus, you’d be casting your vote for the person or party most in line with your views, not based on the person’s name or party affiliation. I realize it’s a really rough idea and it’d be extremely difficult to make work, but I was trying to figure out a way to steer around the whole “vote party loyalty” braindead crap we get way too much of.

re: #299 theEbolafishlives

Very interesting idea.

Of course it’s stupid-proof! It’s mine!

And it has a huge crafting area on the second floor…(we discussed it the other night and I already have lizards lining up with reservations for the Apocalypse).

My bunker is in the basement of my 100+ year old rehab house. The music studio. The absolute first room that was ready to go after putting in a bathroom upstairs.

The neat thing about this old place is the 18” think limestone footer walls. They are not only the perimeter, there are two more that run the length of the house right down the middle 7 feet apart and support the main hall. I put in insulation and some other stuff to cut sound going up through the floors, a bit of padding on the door into the two rooms, a wall closing off one part of the inner walls and I can play my drums after midnight and no one really hears much of it. Maybe a low tapping sound. Same with guitar…but toned down…because guitar.

It is my bunker to get away from it all when needed.

Another idea I’ve seen that I like (not sure if they’re doing it anywhere) — voting preferential. If there’s 6 parties/candidates on the ballot, you vote all of them in order of preference. When they’re all tallied, and nobody has a majority, all the ballots for the 6th place finisher are pulled back up and reassigned to their 2nd choice. If there’s still no majority, the next bottom finisher has their ballots reassigned… repeat as necessary, until somebody has a majority.

Your Green Party vote (or Libertarian or RWNJ or Code Pink or whatever) wouldn’t be thrown into the void, you’d send an actual show of support, and the eventual winner would know they owe x% of their vote (and their potential reelection) to people who preferred whatever part of the spectrum would be ignored in a two-party race.
