White Supremacists Run Interference for Steve Scalise

This is me, still not buying it for one microsecond
Politics • Views: 41,724

One of David Duke’s right hand haters, Kenny Knight, is now trying to run interference for House Majority Whip Steve Scalise with a story that Scalise didn’t actually attend that white supremacist conference after all. Knight says it was pure coincidence; Scalise just happened to give a speech at the same hotel and conference hall, but it really had nothing to do with all those white supremacists.

Kenny Knight is a longtime associate of David Duke, the former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan who ran for governor of Louisiana in 1991. He’s been a key player in news that broke on Sunday that indicated Scalise addressed the white supremacist convention of the European-American Unity and Rights Organization when he was a Louisiana state representative in May 2002.

Knight said on Tuesday that it’s “totally incorrect” to say Scalise spoke at that convention.

“He spoke early in the day to a contingent of people, prior to the conference kicking off,” Knight said. “He was not there as a guest speaker at the conference.”

Hey, it could happen to anybody; you’re just giving an innocuous speech about puppies and kitties, and suddenly you’re surrounded by white supremacists.

Problem is, Scalise has already acknowledged he spoke at the hate conference, and David Duke has stated that Scalise was invited to it; and even if there were any truth to white supremacist Kenny Knight’s tale, it’s impossible to believe Scalise didn’t know what was going on at that conference: White Supremacist Banners, Racist Talks at Later Events of Group Steve Scalise Previously Addressed, Civil Rights Group Says.

Banners proclaiming “White Power” and “White Pride Worldwide” plastered the walls, and speakers gave racist speeches at later conferences in Kenner of a white supremacist organization that U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise says he had addressed in Metairie in 2002, an investigator with the Southern Poverty Law Center civil rights group said Tuesday.

The law center didn’t have an investigator at the 2002 conference of the European-American Unity and Rights Organization at which Scalise has acknowledged that he spoke. But Heidi Beirich, director of the center’s “Intelligence Project,” said EURO events she attended in 2004 and 2005 in Kenner left no doubt about the group’s racist agenda.

“The conferences were a full day of people giving speeches representing the worst in racism or anti-Semitism,” said Beirich.

Scalise knew exactly what he was getting himself into. What bothers me honestly is we didn’t know this sooner. This guy’s not some GOP freshman but the newly appointed Majority Whip. I really think Duke has some dirt on Boehner and the higher ups in the GOP. The way Boehner gave into Duke’s threat suggests to me that there’s a lot of prominent GOPers who have appeared at white supremacist events that Duke is part of.

Those words can be credible or not, this should be decided on a case by case basis.

We learned about it first from a white supremacist who was present during the speech and had no reason to lie about it. White supremacist Knight, being Scalise’s pal, has all the reasons in the world to lie about it. Also, he contradicts his earlier statements.

There’s plenty about the Department of Housing and Urban Development to criticize. The real test is the specificity of the criticism. If someone is going after specific HUD policies as wasteful, ineffective, or badly executed, then there’s a better-than-good chance that critic is on the level (they can still be wrong, but they are unlikely to be a bigot).

It’s when someone is using “HUD” as a buzzword while raging against other buzzwords such as “handouts” and “freeloading” that they are likely to be a bigot.

Yes, but that’s just it: HUD doesn’t handle the kind of welfare the bigots likely receive, so they feel attacking it comes with a lower risk of being criticized for hypocrisy.

Focus on HUD also allows a bigot to use the sick tactics of racial fear in housing yet again, and in this way appeal to white homeowners who are not bigots but who are worried about their property values and the area in which they live.

And bringing another hot topic onto the stage, an epicenter of such housing fears by white people is the St. Louis metro area.

Their support only goes so far as necessity for the onslaught of Armageddon. Other than that, Israel is irrelevant.

Maybe and maybe not. I have no idea what Mrs. Chuck thinks, but Asians are as capable of being racist as the rest of us. They just look at the races existing in a slightly different hierarchy.

Lying liars covering for other lying liars, doncha know.

Meanwhile, we will probably be moving when our lease is up. Read complaints about the “property management” co who incidentally called this morning to tell us where to send our checks for Jan rent. No written notice of possession or anything like that. Asked if the property would be kept in the excellent condition it is in from the previous landlord. Was told, “We’ll keep the same vendors.” Well, the only 2 vendors I know about are the extermination co which comes out every 3 mos, and the dumpster co which picks up our trash. Our excellent ex-owner did repairs himself that he could handle (big jobs, like concreting over the parking lot excepted). Found some very dissatisfied reviews about these rent collectors, too. This appears to be basically an “investment” type company which buys and “renovates” properties and sells them, either self-financing or on a “lease-purchase” type of arrangement. Their rentals are mainly in Charlotte, and the cheapest one they had, a 1 BR condo, is 20% above what I pay for a 3BR. I expect the rent hikes to start as people’s leases run out here; after all, they get a cut from the owner, who remains unknown by me at this point, but could actually be this company. Won’t know for sure until the Register of Deeds info is available online.

Will wait to see if the exterminator (same one for the last 5 yrs) comes out in March; if he doesn’t, I know the party’s over.

Looked this “real estate” company up online, and oh, boy. Well, 5 yrs was a good ride, I suppose, and my rent never went up once. People I’ve talked with here are all making plans. Might be a good night to drink the entire bottle of Riesling I bought today. : )

OK. Off topic, and totally not related in any way, shape or form to duck jokes.

I just got done watching Winter Sleep, the latest film by Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan, and holy crap! what an outstanding film; I can see why it won the Palme d’Or at Cannes earlier this year.

Three hours plus of dialogue and masterclass acting with clear inspiration from Anton Chekov, as well as Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky. Cinematically, reminiscent of Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes From A Marriage.

An intense, heavily dialogue driven character study. Definitely one of the best films of the year, bar none, and I’d personally consider it nothing short of a masterpiece.

The thing that is pathetic to me is how they back away from their beliefs the moment there is a problem for someone. Why is Kenny Knight lying about Scalise’s appearance? What does that say about his beliefs about his beliefs? And the real problem is that he’s apparently not proud of those beliefs, and has not taken the time to analyze why or consider that if you have a belief that you are ashamed of, maybe you should change your mind.

This whole game where they act in ways that shows they understand this is wrong and unacceptable, and then don’t think about why bugs me. They do this all the time. Every issue of the SPLC Intelligence Report has at least one example of it (and usually multiple). The only real explanation I can come up with is that at the end of it, they don’t think they can convert enough people to their cause, so they have to trick us into going along with it. Which is super slimy.

re: #141 3eff Jeff

Spot on.

Which is why I call them spoiled little 10 year old boys. They have to sneak off to be bad and then lie about it all and never own up to their behavior.

217 HappyWarrior  Dec 31, 2014 2:06:11pm

I said it yesterday but sometimes people just need to use common sense. You live in a town of 9000 people in Idaho where I imagine violent crime is scarce. And if you feel that violent crime is a problem to you and you need to carry, why on earth would you bring your two year old with you when you had the gun? Sorry to come across harsh but this could have been avoided in many ways and I blame some of it on the paranoia and fear that some gun owners seem to have of their fellow man.

Well, they certainly underestimate the curiosity (and boredom while shopping) of a 2 yr old.

“They are painting Veronica as irresponsible, and that is not the case,” he said. “… I brought my son up around guns, and he has extensive experience shooting it. And Veronica had had hand gun classes; they’re both licensed to carry, and this wasn’t just some purse she had thrown her gun into.”

So, they don’t “have a lot of crime around here” and Veronica Rutledge wasn’t carrying a gun because she felt “unsafe” but because she was raised around guns?

“Sandow told The Post she often sees people with a gun cradled at their side. “In Idaho, we don’t have to worry about a lot of crime and things like that,” she said. “And to see someone with a gun isn’t bizarre. [Veronica] wasn’t carrying a gun because she felt unsafe. She was carrying a gun because she was raised around guns. This was just a horrible accident.”

He should be taking a look at the culture that he’s part of that made a young woman in an area that has very little violent crime feel the need that she HAD to have a gun with her while she was with her two year old instead of bitching about people who don’t fetishize guns like he does.

Who puts a purse carrying a loaded gun into the same space as a 2 yr old?

253 goddamnedfrank  Dec 31, 2014 2:32:58pm

In general I don’t even think cops should carry their guns with a round chambered. Nobody should. That’s what results in unnecessary shootings. Racking the slide announces one’s intent to take the status of shit from “theoretical” to “real.” It’s a valuable intermediate step in the escalation of force scenario, giving the other person a priceless opportunity to unfuck themselves.

When cops get shot, they’re going to get shot anyway, it’s usually an ambush. Having a round ready in the chamber doesn’t save them, and they usually can’t return fire anyway. If someone does grab their gun the lack of a chambered round give the cop an opportunity to grab their backup weapon.

It’ll never happen though, because we’ve allowed police in this country to be constantly afraid, and we’ve chosen to validate their fears rather than force them to confront reality.

It is always the same story. Oh they were ‘trained.’ Well fuck man, even professionals like soldiers and police make mistake with these things.

An exposition of the precautions we took with our weapons in a real, live war would be tl;dr. Suffice it to say that we were beyond scrupulous in handling, loading, unloading, clearing and storing the things. And, we always handled them as if they were loaded and cocked.

Ralph Peters is actually better than that, but you have to know where to find his good stuff, because its seldom ever on Fox News. FNC is how he pays his bills.

I’d have to argue that since he sold his soul to the far right, he has to be presumed to be in agreement with them. The last thing of any interest he did was “Red Army”. Since then all he’s done is suck up to the far right & the neo-conservatives while spewing all the usual Iran/Iraq/Afghanistan talking points for profit not principle.

Frankly, put a uniform back on him, give him an M-4 & a combat load and parachute him into ISIS held territory. He can lecture me about it when he gets back.

In 2008, two analysts at the RAND Corporation, a California think-tank that works closely with the military, programmed a computer simulation to test out the F-35′s fighting ability in a hypothetical air war with China. The results were startling.

“The F-35 is double-inferior,” John Stillion and Harold Scott Perdue concluded in their written summary of the war game, later leaked to the press. The new plane “can’t turn, can’t climb, can’t run,” they warned.

Technically, it’s a well-put together movie. The script, IMO, was a ham-fisted, cloying exercise in playing to the emotions in the most painfully obvious ways possible.

Part of my dislike for the movie is that it was targeted at baby boomers, and I was 28 when I saw it. I wasn’t the core demographic. The other part of it was the movie took itself too seriously, and chose the cheesiest path possible to get there.

Would Slovak be very close to that?

My father spoke Slovak because he was first generation American and my grandfather was way more fluent in Slovak than English.

I can still remember my father speaking fairly well with the Russia woman right across the street from where I grew up. If I remember, my father said many of the region’s languages are similar enough to be able to basically communicate.

I certainly can’t understand Czech or Slovak (or spoken Polish). They’re related, but still very different.

No, there’s a store in town that sells overstock, close-outs, and factory reconditioned merchandise. It’s the best place to go for a good deal on mobile phones here.

The one I bought was overstock, with money taken off because of a small scratch on the anodized aluminium case. The display is fine, no scratches, the camera and video recorder work great, no other probs, and like I said, a one year warranty.

I’ve got thirty years of analog keyboarding, and I adapted fine. I think you’ll do better than you think. Given the advances in smartphone dictation, you might be typing a lot less than you think. Easily 50 to 60% of my texts are dictated into the phone.

You can’t beat that with a stick, as my Grandfather would say. I’ve gotten some great deals on stuff like that over the years, once got a great deal on a fridge from the Sears Outlet store, it had a small dent on the back side of the right hand panel. I love outlet stores; there’s not too many of them here, but if you shop around and keep your eyes peeled, you can get really great deals.

I’ve noticed younger Czechs are thoroughly comfortable with online shopping - like myself, they use Amazon Germany to get things that are not available here, or are far more expensive in the Czech Republic (particularly consumer electronics).

I never discount sheer luck, either. I got my washing machine when the downstairs neighbor passed away, and the crew cleaning out the apartment for renovation just didn’t feel like hauling it away. I’d just come out of the elevator, and the crew foreman asked, “Do you need a washing machine?” Turned out, yes indeed, I did. I asked him, “How much?” and he said, “Nothing…..it’s free.” We hauled it up the one flight of stairs to my apartment and that was that.

One of the things that made DailyKos great in the day.

By Jeff Lieber (kossack creator of the TV show Lost)

So, about a year ago (four now) I’m playing basketball on a Sunday morning and my wife is home with both the kids and we are out of something important… like diapers and milk… and she makes the brave decision to go to the grocery store.

So, she rounds up my daughter, gets her in the car, and then goes back into the house looking for my then two year-old son.

She calls to him once, then twice, then finally hears him coming down the stairs saying, “Tatue” over and over again.

“Tatue?” my wife thinks. What’s a “Tatue?”

And that’s when she sees it…

…my son had managed to go into our bathroom and find the last vestige of our dating life, which happened to be a large black dildo… with a crank on the end.*

So, my son is pointing with the dildo and gesturing with the dildo and waving it in the air like a wand and saying “Tatue”, which my wife finally realizes means STATUE.

Oh, lord, he thinks its a statue.

Well, now the negotiating starts. My wife would REALLY like my son to put down the… um… “Tatue”… but my son has other ideas and refuses to go out of the house without it.

I’m sure I’m going to lose most of the non-parents here, but the parents will back me up that when you have kids, and something must be done, a parent will sometimes make a ridiculous choice just to avoid a temper tantrum.

……continued

That’s funny.

I remember when I qualified for a house in my mid-20s, when my kids were starting school, but was told I couldn’t get a mortgage because I didn’t have bad credit, I had no credit. The mortgage loan guy told me to go get a store credit card and pay on it for 6 mos and come back. I asked him why I should have to charge something when I paid cash or saved for things. He didn’t have an answer, except “that’s the way things are done here.”

I didn’t try to buy a house again for 15 yrs, by which time I had a credit card that I didn’t use a lot. I went through the credit card, owning a house thing for over 20 yrs. I’ll never do it again.

I love using the term doughface to refer to Roberts, Scalia, and the other conservative Northerners on the bench who delude themselves about what the South actually is like in regards to race. Not suggesting we’re the same as we were in the 60’s but Roberts acted like racism isn’t a problem in the South when nothing nothing could be further from the truth.

If you plan on watching the Rose Bowl Parade tomorrow, please remember the story of Mrs Joan Williams of Los Angeles. I don’t expect the parade announcers to even mention it

Racism And Redemption At The Tournament Of Roses Parade via @forbes

…a tale of racism and redemption from a 57-year-old injustice involving the parade itself.

Riding on the first float in the 126th edition of this New Year’s Day tradition, before some 700,000 spectators in Pasadena, Calif. and an estimated 70 million television viewers, will be 82-year-old Joan Williams. She was first slated to ride in the parade in 1958 as Miss Crown City, but later denied the honor because she was African-American.

In 1957, Williams, her husband and two daughters had just moved to Pasadena (about 10 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles), where she worked for the city’s Department of Water and Power. She didn’t even know there was a Miss Crown City - a Pasadena city employee who appeared at civic ceremonies and rode on the city’s Rose Parade float - until her colleagues had nominated her for the position…

Williams sat for a portrait - “with a tiara on!” - and was given a list of appearances: department store ribbon cutting, opening of the new Sears and, of course, the Rose Parade.

Then a reporter from a local newspaper went to the Williams home “and met my family, which consisted of my brown-skinned husband and my two little girls.”

As Jet magazine reported, “word spread that light-complexioned Mrs. Williams was a Negro.”

“Within days, it all went downhill,” Ms. Williams says. She was told that, for budgetary reasons, the city had decided not to enter a float in that year’s Tournament of Roses Parade.

“The parade happened,” she told me. “I just wasn’t in it.”

On top of that, “People I worked with stopped speaking with me. And it was all because of assumptions that they had made when they nominated me.”

“You can imagine how I felt. I was young, I was excited. I had been watching the parade all my life,” said the Los Angeles native. “It was a wonderful, festive time I thought I would be part of.”

Although Ms. Williams calls the episode “a slap in the face,” she also insists “I didn’t dwell on it, and I haven’t dwelt on it.”…

Yeah I read that article the other night. Thurmond is a great counterpoint. From your link,

“So far, the numbers taken by the radar are unbelievably high. This rate of climb is very high, too high. It appears to be beyond the performance envelope of the aircraft,” he said.

I saw an authorative news report several hours ago suggesting the plane was likely caught in a very strong updraft, which likely messed over the aerodynamics badly. I imagine it could also have, shall we say, confused some of the automated navigation controls. (Nose is pointing down and I’m still going up very fast? WTF)
