George Takei Apologizes for Calling Clarence Thomas a “Clown in Blackface” (But Not for Criticizing Him)

A classy statement
Opinion • Views: 66,045

As I wrote yesterday, I believe that although George Takei’s characterization of Clarence Thomas as a “clown in blackface” was poorly phrased, his criticism of Thomas’s statements that the pre-Civil War US government did not deprive slaves of their dignity was right on target.

The right wing media and blogs have been raising holy hell over Takei’s choice to use the word “blackface,” because this is how they see the issue of racism; as a matter of words, not intent. Whenever a liberal figure like Takei uses one of these words, right wingers stage a showy freak-out because they see a chance to turn the tables — not because they actually believe their target is a racist. And that’s exactly what they’ve been doing to George Takei for the past two days.

Just a few minutes ago on his Facebook page, Takei posted an eloquent statement about this nontroversy, explaining his intent and apologizing for his poor choice of words — but not for his substantive criticism of Thomas’s outrageously offensive remarks. Here it is in its entirety for the record:

On the eve of this Independence Day, I have a renewed sense of what this country stands for, and how I personally could help achieve it. The promise of equality and freedom is one that all of us have to work for, at all times. I know this as a survivor of the Japanese American internment, which each day drives me only to strive harder to help fulfill that promise for future generations.

I recently was asked by a reporter about Justice Clarence Thomas’s dissent in the marriage equality cases, in which he wrote words that really got under my skin, by suggesting that the government cannot take away human dignity through slavery, or though internment. In my mind that suggested that this meant he felt the government therefore shouldn’t be held accountable, or should do nothing in the face of gross violations of dignity. When asked by a reporter about the opinion, I was still seething, and I referred to him as a “clown in blackface” to suggest that he had abdicated and abandoned his heritage. This was not intended to be racist, but rather to evoke a history of racism in the theatrical arts. While I continue to vehemently disagree with Justice Thomas, the words I chose, said in the heat of anger, were not carefully considered.

I am reminded, especially on this July 4th holiday, that though we have the freedom to speak our minds, we must use that freedom judiciously. Each of us, as humans, have hot-button topics that can set-us off, and Justice Thomas had hit mine, that is clear. But my choice of words was regrettable, not because I do not believe Justice Thomas is deeply wrong, but because they were ad hominem and uncivil, and for that I am sorry.

I often ask fans to keep the level of discourse on this page and in comments high, and to remember that we all love this country and for what it stands for, even if we often disagree passionately about how to achieve those goals. I did not live up to my own high standards in this instance.

I hope all of you have a wonderful, safe and joyously free July 4th, the first where all married couples in the U.S. can enjoy the full liberties of matrimony equally. It is truly a blessing to be an American today.

I still don’t think George should have apologized given the way that the right wing takes everything said out of context. The word choice was not what I would have done, but the balance of his original statement was entirely on point.

And of course, I’m being called a racist for sticking up for George Takei’s right to SSM and calling out racists and bigots.

What a country!

According to Hill, during her two years of employment as Thomas’s assistant, Thomas had asked her out socially many times,[6] and after she refused, he used work situations to discuss sexual subjects.[4][6] “He spoke about…such matters as women having sex with animals and films showing group sex or rape scenes” she said, adding that on several occasions Thomas graphically described “his own sexual prowess” and the details of his anatomy.[4] Hill also recounted an instance in which Thomas examined a can of Coke on his desk and asked, “Who has put pubic hair on my Coke?”[4]
Four female witnesses waited in the wings to reportedly support Hill’s credibility, but they were not called,[12][13] due to what the Los Angeles Times described as a private, compromise deal between “aggressive, gloves-off” Republicans and the Senate Judiciary Committee Chair, Democrat Joe Biden.[14] According to Time magazine, one of the witnesses, Angela Wright, may not have been considered credible on the issue of sexual harassment because she had been fired from the EEOC by Thomas.[13]
24 EPR-radar  Jul 3, 2015 1:42:50pm

It’s worth noting that marriage equality is not really a done deal if a Republican is elected president in 2016. Whoever is elected president in 2016 is going to make several supreme court appointments, and anyone a Republican POTUS nominates is going to be a RWNJ hack like Roberts, Alito, Thomas and Scalia.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see such a supreme court overturn Obergefell.

Many other decisions would be targets at such a time, including Lawrence, Roe and Griswold. Brown would be the ultimate target, of course.

People look at racism as a binary, either you are racist or are not.

That’s not how it works in real life. We all carry our baggage, and your are either more racist or less racist.

A single instance of inappropriate language is not enough; it’s a systematic, continued use that’s a problem—-and something some people can’t or won’t understand.

I missed this yesterday.

A Roswell police officer who claimed a fast food worker spit in his drink has now been arrested for making the whole thing up. Before his arrest the officer quit and turned in his patrol car and there were drugs and stolen items inside.

According to the criminal complaint investigators watched video from the restaurant and saw no evidence that the worker spit in Moreno’s drink. When confronted by a fellow officer police say Moreno admitted to spitting in his own drink because he didn’t like the sonic worker who he’d arrested for petty crimes in the past.

The complaint says that knowing he would be fired, Moreno resigned yesterday and turned in his equipment. Officers were surprised by what they found inside his patrol car.”More contraband was found in the trunk, which not only violates policy but possession of some of these constitute a criminal event as well,” said Chief Philip Smith, with Roswell Police.

Inside the trunk they found meth, drug pipes,a BB gun and a suspect’s driver’s license. It was all evidence he’d kept from cases.

[…]

Stupid ex-cop. They made the fast-food worker give a DNA sample, then they asked the suspect (officer) for one, and that’s when he gave up.

44 jaunte  Jul 3, 2015 2:23:06pm

Granted, Thomas sometimes interprets symbols—such as burning crosses or Confederate flags—as offensive. But the actual, institutional bias those symbols promote escapes him. Thomas frequently infuses respectability politics into his rulings, which demonstrates his continued obliviousness to reality: It is not the responsibility of a vulnerable people to convince the powerful they are worth protecting. It is not the duty of the marginalized to prove they have dignity and therefore become worthy of being treated as equals; that task lies squarely across the shoulders of the rulers. And, in this regard, Thomas’s blindness shows. This is a person who, during the demonization of black people in the Reagan era, thought we were the main problem.

Good afternoon Lizards!

Truly gorgeous summer day in coastal Massachusetts. Early morning walk on the beach at Plum Island followed by a late morning hike on a local trail near Essex. Afternoon visit was to a location called Hammond Castle (see link), which was an extended drive since I got there and then discovered I’d left my wallet and money back at the inn. (D’oh!)

Plum Island visit included wild turkeys along the road (who gobbled on queue), egrets in the marsh, and seeing a plover walking the beach with two chicks. Large sections of beach off limits right now since the plovers and terns are nesting.

There are also turkeys in the field across the road from the inn. I have seen two there the last two afternoons while I sat on the porch and read a book. (If there was a power plug out there I’d have the computer out there right now.)

TMIAHM is my go-to reference when RWNJs start bleating about “redefining marriage”. SSM doesn’t “redefine” a goddamn thing—all it does is increase the pool of eligibility by a couple of percent. Now if we were talking about legalizing something like Heinlein’s “line marriage”, that would be a redefinition, and would require completely different laws. I’m not against it, by any means, but I really don’t know how it would work, legally. SSM is literally nothing.

On a slightly different topic, I’ve finally put my finger on what really bothers me about Roberts’ dissent in Obergefell.

Roberts argued that the majority opinion had no logical derivation from the constitution itself, and was merely the personal views of a majority of SCOTUS.

I think the best counter-argument to this is a big, fat ‘So What!’

This is basically in the job description for SCOTUS justices, and is not at all unusual, even for other landmark cases. Unlike anyone else in the US legal system, a SCOTUS majority really does get to have their interpretation of the constitution carry the force of law.

So Roberts is disingenuously pretending that Obergefell is somehow not business as usual at SCOTUS because he dislikes the result. The voting rights act case and Citizens United were hardly results compelled by the bare text of the constitution.

For that matter, neither was the result in Brown v. Board of Education. Plessy (overruled in Brown) set forth ‘separate but equal’ as a way to comply with constitutional requirements, and from only the bare text of the constitution there would be no way to arrive at the conclusion that Plessy had to be overturned. This demonstrates, once again, the total uselessness of the original intent analysis conservative jurists use to pretend that they follow the constitution while liberal jurists do not.

Heinlein’s line marriage was a much more serious contract than that of a marriage license. Essentially it was an incorporation agreement with the members controlling addition/removal from membership in the corporation. And it was essentially defining a family lineage by consenting adults making agreement and not heredity defining the heirs.

Conservatives like to talk about “the dignity of work”, but when it comes to work as a source of human dignity vs. labor as a commodity to be bought and sold at the cheapest possible price, then the latter wins hands down.

And how can labor impart dignity if it too poorly paid to allow a breadwinner to feed and educate a family and give them a chance at a better life

From one of the links embedded there:

The chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says that black leaders are “watching the destruction of our race” as they “bitch, bitch, bitch” about President Reagan but fail to work with the administration to solve problems.

Clarence Thomas said in an interview that, in his 3 1/2 years on the job, no major black leader has sought his help in influencing the Reagan administration.

Black spokesmen should be working with the administration to solve such problems as teen-age pregnancy, unemployment or illiteracy instead of working against Reagan, Thomas said.

“These guys are sitting there watching the destruction of our race while arguing about Ronald Reagan,” Thomas said. “Ronald Reagan isn’t the problem. Former president Jimmy Carter was not the problem. The lack of black leadership is the problem.”

Thomas, who agrees with Reagan’s opposition to busing and quotas, said black leaders have allowed blacks to lose access to the presidency and become the only group overwhelmingly opposed to a “popular president.”

Turkeys in the wild are really cool to see and a sign of sane hunting laws, regulation and conservation. I never saw any growing up;

While Americans debated whether the Confederate flag belongs atop a statehouse or in a museum last week, I pondered another controversial symbol.

In El Paso, Texas, I drove past a massive statue of Spanish conquistador Don Juan de Oñate atop his horse. Oñate greets airport visitors holding the 1598 document proclaiming that Spain was taking possession of this region.

Two outside cultures conquered our area - first the Spanish, later the Americans. Both committed unconscionable atrocities against Native Americans, who are still feeling the effects.

For example, the Navajo Nation’s poverty rate, 43 percent, dwarfs New Mexico’s rate of 20.4 percent. New Mexico’s Native youth die by suicide at a rate at least twice as high as others. Native people nationwide are more likely to be killed by police than others, including blacks.

I went back and looked at the exit polling over at the NYT. The percentage of Latinos voting Republican over the last 30+ years is:

1980: 35%
1984: 37%
1988: 30%

1996: 21%
2000: 35%
2004: 43%

Latinos are a much larger percentage of the voter population now than they were when Reagan ran in 1980. They’re clearly not buying into the GOP as much now as they were 10 years ago, either. Plus the teabagger DEY TOOK ARE JRRBZ garbage, the racist garbage hurled at POTUS daily, the absolute contempt the GOP has shown the Pope, and the way Republicans treat Latino immigrants who aren’t from Cuba will not help them in 2016.

I guess the secondary question is what swing or marginal states are they a sizable fraction of? I don’t think they can turn Texas purple yet, and in a state like California or New York the GOP will discount them since they don’t have realistic plans of winning those states at this time.

The biggie:

Latinos (or Hispanics) make up almost a quarter of Florida’s population and 15 percent of its registered voters. But Cuban-Americans are less than 30 percent of the state’s Latino cohort. Groups like Puerto Ricans and South Americans are surging - and voting mostly Democratic, evidenced by the fact that they helped President Obama win Florida in 2012.

“She” doesn’t exist. Dan created her and set her up as the pretend author of some bullshit e-book that he’s trying to sell. He didn’t write the book either, it’s like Amway for self-help scam artists. Several different low rent e-marketing assholes sell the same product on different sites.

re: #163 calochortus

How is this supposed to be marketing for anything?

It’s the “there’s no such thing as bad publicity” school of thought. Dan thought he could insulate himself from any blowback by pretending Carpentier was somebody else. The fake identity also allowed him to pretend to come across and write a “review” of the book on his own blog, and then linked to a different site where readers could buy it. Only he doesn’t mention on the blog review that the link just goes to a page on another website that he owns.

It’s scams all the way down.

It’s a very cynical and I’ll admit counter intuitive approach to selling a product. But you have to realize that Dan is a completely deranged racist religious fanatic and abusive asshole. Part of his track record has been to approach small businesses with a bid to do SEO work, then when the business owner politely refuses to hire him he makes a video of himself giving a negative review of the company and uploads it to Youtube, effectively trashing them. Remember folks — if you have an external hard drive and it suddenly refuses to respond, 9 times out of 10 it isn’t the drive that failed, it’s the power supply in the drive’s enclosure.

I just regained the use of two external drives by opening their enclosures and checking them by plugging them into a USB dock. Both drives were fine, it was the power supplies that bit the dust.

I got two of these super-cheap USB enclosures from Amazon: amazon.com

And now both drives are operating at full speed again.

I didn’t really need that 5TB drive I bought earlier this week, but hey … FIVE TERABYTES. My Time Machine backup will now go back several years.

Out on my walk today… and discovered that yet another of my favorite loquat trees had been cut down.

It was not a volunteer one either, but a select variety. Fully mature, every spring it would be loaded with hundreds of the orange-flesh type.

Now … all gone. I think the woman who was living there must have died or now can’t take care of the place. Last year when I stopped by to ask permission a younger male answered the door - I assume the son.

Most of her well planted fruit bearing yard is now dead or cut down. And what is left is not being maintained (basically weeds growing.)

So sad to see.

And while I was walking around I’m seeing quite a few lots not well maintained.

My well worn soapbox: people (real estate agents in particular, but also the younger “aspirational” couples) have this view of property that is not tied to the physical world, the world of rocks and atoms, and of plants and animals. To them a piece of land is just a number on a loan, which exists to be over-priced by inflation, so some mythical “wealth” can be extracted to buy a fancy car that they are supposed to have to prove to the world they are “successful”.

Well, not to me. A single loquat tree is more valuable than the latest Mercedes SUV.

One thing that happens so commonly is that young people and first time property owners under appreciate the costs - time and money - to properly maintain property and improvements.

And this is one thing my father continually impressed upon me by having me help with maintenance and improvement tasks as a youngster. I know what it costs to replace a roof, or to resurface my driveway, or to rebuild my deck - and can plan accordingly, to ensure that these projects are done on a reasonable schedule. I also prioritize maintaining my lawn within the constraints of my schedule, because I don’t want my lawn to be “that guy’s” that always looks unkempt and weedy.

Property is a burden that has to appreciated. I don’t own where I live now, but I have before, and I was overwhelmed by work involved.

So I speak from experience.

You were fortunate to have a parent who prepared you for tackling the “American Dream”.

I look around here and I see overpriced poorly-built houses on land that is much more valued than the shacks built on them. And by “shacks” I mean places around here that are still appraised at over $500k.

Formally educated on electronics here…

Yeah, the “capacitor plague” is sadly a still ongoing saga.
Another reason is that bean counters decide to save on parts. Sometimes parts are exchanged for ones which can’t handle continuous load, or exchanged for parts which can’t handle the environment continuously.

If you decide to go the re-cap route, don’t do what the bean-counters did.
Use known quality name caps (e.g. Nichicon, Panasonic) . Use low ESR caps, use 105°C rated caps, even if the originals are 85°C, it is not uncommon for the enclosures to run too hot for cap comfort.

Check if the enclosure has unpopulated space for fans, consider populating it if you run the drive in places with known temp extremes. If it has space for a fan and you tend to run it in warm places, consider a retrofitted fan.

And yeah, Dave Jones (a.k.a. that crazy Aussie bloke) is well-known among us Electronics nerds).

Because our culture is now built around the automobile, so many people are on the edge financially. Again, one of the insights of getting older is now looking back I see how much I spent on automobiles. I did better than many others, but still wasted thousands of dollars on unneeded trips.

But it is more than just money. Things take ownership of oneself. They demand attention - upkeep, eventually disposal.

I’m not long for this world this evening. Had a talk at work with one of the owners (the one who is more in-tune with the business ops side, the other focuses more on the instruction and training). I see some ways to improve our inventory management while not having a huge amount of stuff sitting on shelves in the back tying up capitol. He seemed to like the idea and gave me the green light on it.

All I can say is that it’s nice working at a place where I feel appreciated, and that I feel like I’m making a difference.

Tomorrow I’m going to a huge 4th party / fireworks show that a “second circle of friends” friend is throwing. He’s providing chicken legs, burgers and dogs for everybody, plus grills if people want to fix their own food. Asks that people bring a case of soda / water / deserts / sides. I’m doing a gallon of my grandfathers Greek rice pudding. (It’s the same one that you might have in any small diner up or down the east coast). So good.

re: #235 freetoken

QFT, and everyone, pay attention in your neighborhood.

I’m putting the picture inside a spoiler tag, since I know that some of the lizards may have a strong reaction to a giant red-headed centipede. (I know I did). It’s called a Texas Redhead, grows up to 8 inches, and worst of all, have been know to kill and eat lizards. Truly the stuff of nightmares.

No, just NO!!!!!!

Drive-by comment - 2016 presidential candidates spreadsheet updated to include Jim Webb (declared) & John Kasich (unlikely, but possible), notes on candidates’ current & past positions (wrt experience, not ideology), some columns deleted/rearranged: docs.google.com

CL, if you are around still. Kasich will be announcing on July 21 from The Ohio State University Student Union.

Here a link to Politico article.

“…Scolopendra heros is purported to make tiny incisions with its legs while walking across human skin. When the animal is irritated, a poison is supposedly produced near the base of each leg and dropped into the wounds causing inflammation and irritation. According to one story cited by Dr. Baerg, an officer in the Confederate Army, while sleeping in his tent, was suddenly aroused by the creepy feeling of a large centipede crawling on his chest. A number of spots of deep red, forming a broad streak, indicated the arthropod’s passage across the man’s chest and abdomen. Violent pain and convulsions soon set in, accompanied by excessive swelling in the bitten area. The victim fought with death for two days and then succumbed. ”

It is striking.

Wondering if I should write an article about Chucky’s new post. I just read it for the second time, and man oh man is this ever bizarre and fucked up. On the other hand, it’s now been up there for 14 hours and has only one comment:

If I write about this garbage post I might be giving it much more attention than it deserves.

ICYMI, I published a “translation” of Chuck’s screed earlier today. I included three direct quotes from him, because they were self-parody.

I remember a scene from one of the James Bond novels. Someone has put a poisonous centipede in Bond’s hotel room. Bond manages to smash the thing before it bites him, and immediately afterward runs to the bathroom — apparently, to throw up. I doubt that last part was in the movie version.

Varek, there is a special place in hell for you, where you will be forced to watch infomercials featuring Michelle Bachmann 23 hours a day. The remaining hour they will make it REALLY painful for you.

re: #155 Feline Fearless Leader

I guess the secondary question is what swing or marginal states are they a sizable fraction of? I don’t think they can turn Texas purple yet, and in a state like California or New York the GOP will discount them since they don’t have realistic plans of winning those states at this time.

They might could, if they’d vote. Hispanic turnout in Texas is execrable, even when a Hispanic is running near the top of the ticket (last cycle, Leticia Van De Putte for Lt. Gov). We ended up with Dan Patrick, who is an absolute nut job.

From the Texas Tribune on the 2012 cycle:

“In Texas, which is home to nearly one in five of all U.S. Hispanics, just 39 percent of Hispanics who were eligible to vote in the 2012 presidential election cast a ballot. That’s compared with 48 percent of eligible U.S. Hispanics, 61 percent of eligible white Texans and 64 percent of eligible white Americans.”

texastribune.org

As my buddy Ramiro says, “My peeps don’t vote. Too wrapped up in their families and they feel like it doesn’t make any difference.”

And he’s a Director who manages a Division in a State Agency with about 1,000 employees. Smart as a whip. Closeted Lib. Frustrated by it all.

My neighbor hates trees. I think she’s afraid they’ll fall on her. She cut all her trees down in her sizable back yard and approached me twitch to take down trees bordering our properties.

I told her to get a tree guy out. If he says they’re sick or in danger of coming down, we can talk, otherwise no way I’m voluntarily cutting down a beautiful mature tree.

Latinos would be the group every party in Texas would be after if they would vote.

I heard a story on tv about Clyde Kennard: en.m.wikipedia.org.
Short: in the late 50s, he wanted to transfer to a college in Mississippi to help his mom on the farm. The governor tried everything to keep him out, including offering to pay for his school out of state. When that didn’t work, they got a guy who stole some chicken feed to say Kennard was the mastermind. He was given the max sentence and sent to a cotton farm prison. He developed colon cancer, but the governor refused to release him unto right before he died. The governor said it wouldn’t send the right message.

Centipedes are a freakshow anyway. With all those identical segments just like an annelid worm, coupled with the front six being fused into a perfect arthropod head, if they were extinct and you found one as a fossil everybody would say it was a fake.
