Donald Trump Throws His Weight Around, Threatens to Pull Out of Debate, Other Candidates Follow Suit

Trump leads the GOP around by the nose
Politics • Views: 51,351

The next Republican debate is shaping up to be even more of a clown show than the previous ones, as the candidates each throw tantrums and threaten to pull out if their demands aren’t met — starting with Donald Trump.

On the call, according to three sources who were on the line, Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s campaign manager, said that if the debate does not include opening or closing statements and is longer than two hours total, including commercial breaks, the real estate mogul would have to reconsider his participation.

Tempers flared!

First, Jason Miller, a top strategist for Ted Cruz, said his campaign would consider bailing if there weren’t openings and closings. Then, Chris LaCivita, an aide to Rand Paul, chimed in: “If we don’t have opening and closing statements, CNBC can go fck themselves.”

After Lewandowski spoke, others chimed in — including Beth Hansen, who said the conference call was a “debacle.”

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, an adviser to Mike Huckabee, voiced another concern: That not all candidates would have equal time to speak during the debate.

This is such a dignified, presidential slate of candidates, don’t you think?

UPDATE at 10/15/15 12:50:09 pm by Charles Johnson

Ben Carson is joining the mass tantrum as well: Donald Trump, Ben Carson Threaten to Boycott the Next GOP Debate.

Donald Trump and Ben Carson are both threatening to boycott the next Republican presidential debate if CNBC, who is hosting the event, and the Republican National Committee do not change the stated format of the event.

“Neither Mr. Trump or Dr. Carson will participate in your debate if it is longer than 120 minutes including commercials and does not include opening and closing statements,” the letter, obtained exclusively by NBC News and signed by both candidates, reads.

Now the GOP is really stuck between a rock and a hard place…they cannot be sure that Trump will not go third party if they cross him.

CNBC isn’t the GOP, though. It could be that Trump just doesn’t want to be in that Debate and is looking for a reason to avoid it. The CNN article Lidane just posted mentions that.

It could also be that Trump wants to force other candidates to dance to his tune or have the debate seem irrelevant because he isn’t there.

Really?

Then, Chris LaCivita, an aide to Rand Paul, chimed in: “If we don’t have opening and closing statements, CNBC can go f—- themselves.”

A spokesman for the campaign of a sitting US Senator said that on the record?

Then, Chris LaCivita, an aide to Rand Paul, chimed in: “If we don’t have opening and closing statements, CNBC can go f—- themselves.”

LaCivita knows all about acting dignified:

LaCivita at one time worked for the Republican political consulting firm DCI Group, which had close ties both to Progress for America and Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. During the 2004 US Presidential campaign, LaCivita served as consultant and principal media advisor to the Swift Boat Veterans, writing and producing the group’s memorable (and controversial) commercials in association with Rick Reed.

[…]

During the 2008 presidential campaign, LaCivita and Tony Feather launched a new 501(c)4 issues advocacy group, the American Issues Project, after a series of meetings with other Swift Boat donors. In August 2008, AIP began airing ads in battleground states seeking to raise questions about Democratic Party presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama’s ties to former student radical William Ayers.[10] The American Issues Project has a sole donor, Harold Simmons, an 87-year-old Dallas billionaire who was also a principal donor, along with T. Boone Pickens, to the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth PAC

If the GOP can’t manage a debate, how can they manage the economy.

If the GOP can’t manage a debate, how can they deal with Putin (or ISIL).

If the GOP can’t manage a debate…

you get the idea.

Seriously though, the inner workings of setting up debates is shielded from public view because the parties have vastly different agendas and ideas of how best to get their candidates into view and best position to excel. With a 15 candidate clown show, that’s a lot more than usual, which makes the conference calls even more testy. You’ve got even more boorish personalities at work, and working at cross purposes.

The other candidates are right to demand openings/closings - the usual debate trappings. Trump’s concern is that it eats into his time, or gives others more free time - as does a longer format. The other candidates figure it is to their benefit to have more air time - as much as possible - with limited interruptions as when they’re in the heart of the debate.

Some of this can be resolved by eliminating a bunch of asterisks from the race, but you know that they wouldn’t go for it. There’s too many of them at this point, and too many establishment types that would leave this to Trump, Carson, etc.

As funny as all of this is, it is very un-democratic like to have any news organization determine which candidates are worthy. The GOP should manage candidates. If they have 12 people running, all should be on that stage.

I think they are all clowns, but, for example, if you watch Lindsay Graham in the last kiddie table debate, he nailed it…and that he is relegated to the kiddie table is appalling. I would never vote for him nor do I agree with what I said he nailed, but republican voters would.

This is more of how badly the GOP leads and manages.

They refused to refute or even distance themselves from people who espoused those views for fear of alienating their base, and now they have started an attention-grabbing race to the bottom.

Call me a Hilbot, but I just watched a clip from Rachel’s show of Hillary going after the Republican party and I got a lit up. Seriously, she was on point on the message of how terrible Republicans are.

I have never seen her that fired up. Go Hillary. I want to see more of that.

They really are. And it’s so laughable seeing Republicans complain about that when they’ve made this president out to be someone who hates this country.

KGxvi  Oct 15, 2015 • 1:51:16pm

I have to admit, requesting/requiring opening and closing statements seems like an entirely reasonable demand for a debate.

But the flip side is, if you limit it to two hours (including commercials) you’re looking about about 90 minutes of actual debate time. Two minutes to open, one minute to close, for what, 12 candidates? That’s 36 minutes. That only leaves 54 minutes for Trump to insult everyone, Huckabee to declare the Confederacy the morally right side of the Civil War, and for Fiorina to summon the demon sheep. That’s not a whole lot of time.

And one would think if you’re trailing in the polls you’d want more time for Trump to slip up and say something damaging (like admitting he’s really pro-choice) and/or more time to get your positions out there - which of course is why Trump, as the leader, would want less time. If I were a trailing candidate, I’d say that Trump was scared to “debate the real issues”.

I’d say that Trump (and Carson) wants to push more people out of the adult debate and into the kids show. They are in the lead, what they want is for the folks at the bottom of the polls to go away. This gives them more time to talk about themselves and removes the annoying dynamic where all the folks with nothing to lose take pot shots at the leaders who can’t respond because just mentions the little folks helps their polling. [or so I see it]

It’s a relatively early diagnosis - her daughter is only 3-ish (birthdays are hard, ok?) - and it sounds like she’s relatively high-functioning. I know they’ve been working hard to get her the support she needs.

I just also know that’s got to be a rough time for them as parents and I want to be sure she knows I’m thinking about her. So I will probably try to do a card or something, and maybe tuck in a gift card for her to spend on stuff for the hobby she’s trying to turn into a home business.

What’s good is they diagnosed her early. It’s definitely tough though I imagine for the parents. Having only been on the diagnosed end, I have no idea what that side us like. I love your idea though. I think she’ll appreciate it. I’m also glad she’s relatively high functioning. It’s tougher being lower functioning I imagine.

I don’t know what’s available as OTC treatments for migraine in the US but Over Here in the UK my go-to fix for an incipient migraine involves an ibuprofen-codeine mix with an anti-nausea sidekick (Buclizine, I think). It’s effective for me if I catch it in time although the codeine gives me a touch of “the colours, man!” so no operating heavy machinery or juggling chainsaws for me until the day after.

The pharmacist will ask a few questions before selling it to me but it’s not a prescription-only drug.

Talk to her directly about it, don’t beat around the bush, and don’t be super sympathetic because that communicates to her that she has a damaged kid. She doesn’t.

It does really depend on where on the spectrum the daughter sits for how much she will have to prepare herself. She will have to become extremely literal in her communication with her daughter, and pay attention to exactly what her daughter is focusing on rather than what she would focus on. Kids on the spectrum react poorly when their plans don’t go well, so you’ll have to be both an information source, giving her ideas on how to approach problems and emotional support when she becomes frustrated at her inability to understand her child. Remember that she will be too close to the situation to see everything.

re: #53 WhatEVs

As funny as all of this is, it is very un-democratic like to have any news organization determine which candidates are worthy. The GOP should manage candidates. If they have 12 people running, all should be on that stage.

I think they are all clowns, but, for example, if you watch Lindsay Graham in the last kiddie table debate, he nailed it…and that he is relegated to the kiddie table is appalling. I would never vote for him nor do I agree with what I said he nailed, but republican voters would.

This is more of how badly the GOP leads and manages.

They should have the top 12 candidates for a two hour debate. Each should have 5 minutes for opening statement and another 5 for closing. The rest of the time is open for questions and commercials.

We pushed Sen. Sanders to take a position on civil asset forfeiture given its economic implications for people of color, who are disproportionately likely to have their cash and property confiscated by police without due process.
He heard us and indicated that he would take action to end this practice. In the days since that meeting, he came out against civil asset forfeiture and his campaign added a section to their Racial Justice Platform focused on this issue.

Conclusion
We need to continue pushing lawmakers to adopt platforms that reflect the understanding that the safety of communities is not predicated on the presence of police. Senator Sanders and Secretary Clinton were willing to be pushed and have begun incorporating feedback from the meetings into their platforms: Senator Sanders incorporated civil asset forfeiture and Secretary Clinton has begun to discuss a new “New Deal.”
Senator Sanders has an opportunity to continue to make his Racial Justice Platform more robust in ways that match the urgency of his spoken words. Secretary Clinton has the opportunity to release a platform focused on race that is informed by her career in politics and the vantage that this ostensibly offers.
We will continue to demand actionable plans from the candidates that directly address issues of race, equity, and criminal justice, and will hold them accountable once in office.
We can live in a world where the police don’t kill people.
We can live in a world where justice exists.
We will fight for this world.
We will win.

Factoid: On October 28th Dennis Hastert is expect to plea guilty in a deal with federal prosecutors over his violation of banking rules to pay off a child abuse victim.

The plea will allow Mr. Hastert, who presided over the House from 1999 to 2007, to avoid a potentially long and embarrassing trial and to keep secret information that he has hidden for years, including the identity of the former student. It was that man who, around 2010, met with the former speaker several times to discuss “past misconduct” by Mr. Hastert while he was teaching in Yorkville, the indictment said. Mr. Hastert taught there from 1965 to 1981.

This means that when the next GOP debate occurs the governing principal of the Republican House of Representatives will be named after a child molester and convicted felon. Expect none of the candidates for President to be asked about this, even though the policy is one of the primary cause of the increased radicalization within their party.

Based on my experience: let her take the lead as to where the conversation goes. Ask questions. Say “that sounds tough.” But don’t try to decide for her how to feel (either by being super sympathetic OR by telling her to count her blessings). My friend went back and forth about how she felt and what they wanted to do, and I mostly admired how hard she worked and how much she cared, because what do I know?

Small amounts of pepper can be quite good in sweet stuff. I make black pepper strawberry jam.

With all of the “sweet” aromas and the sugar, you sense different aspects of the pepper’s flavor. In the case of the jam, its floral qualities are more prominent, while its heat and pine-y qualities are de-emphasized.

I say…try it.

Then try a teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil on a scoop of vanilla (with a little bit of crushed rock salt, if you’re up to working a mortar and pestle).

And I agree that intervention at an early age is huge, huge, huge.

If I’d have been told at age 7 or 8 that I had a specific condition that made social connection harder, my whole life would have been different. Don’t think that a kid that young can’t understand what to do… If I’d have known, I would have been able to help myself even that young.

And it’s very, very important to combat social loneliness too. Feeling almost physically disconnected from social interaction can lead to some very dark, unhappy places, so in a perfect world I’d find a way to help kids with ASD form friendships and find playmates and NOT be made to feel outcast or “weird” in a bad way.

Back in the 80’s, if you were ASD, nobody knew it. You might have older teachers who saw enough to put you in special advanced classes for what you were good at, and treat you with kindness, but the rank-and-file kids would usually brand and shun you.

Basically if autistic issues were treated like when a kid has a broken arm, instead of like they have a broken soul, things would be easier for everyone: Be open about the injury, show off the cast, talk about it, make sure everybody understands the treatment plan, be light-hearted, and don’t shut everything inside.

Klys,

I’m a little late to the answer about your friend with the young daughter recently diagnosed with autism.

I have good friends that have a child that was fairly severe on the scale. He was born back in the early 90s when there was a lot less awareness than today. His father (my best friend from high school…now passed) was fortunate to have worked in the mental health field and had worked with some of the first actual named autistic cases here in Ohio in the late 70s.

His whole way of dealing with it was to treat his son as normal and when the issues arose to deal with it, like when he would violently act out. They would huddle with him and hold him until he settled down. As he grew they worked with him as it was just another human issue to deal with, like having any other type of child illness. When he was of an age to start to really understand (10 or so) they actually told him he was autistic and that what he was going through was ‘normal’ and in the long run he would be fine. Eventually he was able to know when he was beginning to feel autistic and an episode was coming and he would tell his parents that he ‘didn’t feel well’ and they would do something with him to calm him down, like draw or play music, work on his model railroad, etc.

My friend was of the mind that he could teach the boy to be normal as his thinking was always you can work around the issues and teach him to accept it, that eventually he would be fine. His thinking was always a brain can be taught to work through different channels…more or less find new paths for proper thinking and behavior. He treated it as a learning deficiency instead of a mental problem.

Today, the son is a fine young man that is extremely independent, very artistic and able to deal on his own. Now that his father has died, the son even stated the he had to carry on as his fathers replacement in the family…the man of the house.

My friend ended up working with local doctors at Ohio State and Nationwide Children’s as an example of how to parent and autistic child. The doctors were amazed how well my friend and his wife did with their son by just sticking to their guns and teaching him slowly and patiently, something they really couldn’t get in our local schools at the time.

So, basically the bottom line is…do not panic. He always felt the worst thing was for the parents to freak out. That just helps the autistic child to freak out too. It was tough work, but they soldiered on like it was no big thing, as that was what they wanted their son to realize. He was different, but to celebrate that difference and work with it. No big thing.

Keep in mind, this was a severe case and they got through it and now the son actually calls himself autistic to anyone that wonders why he sometimes acts the way he does, like its no big thing and he can explain it to outsiders. It totally blows people away. The son actually got up in front of a huge audience at an OSU fund raiser and gave a speech that explained his background and how his parents helped him work through it by loving him and always working with him, even in the toughest of episodes. He had the audience in tears. He got a standing ovation for it. His parents beamed!

I don’t know if this helps, it is one case that I was close to and one that I have some knowledge of. I guess the best thing to do is say to your friends they have a great kid and they will be fine. Education of autistic children has come a long way in the 2000s. Now our local schools have specialists in the school that work with the kids that are kept in their classroom with the other kids, and when needed come in and assist. They have learned that they are not “dumb” just different. Eventually the kid became loved by his classmates. In a way they protected him and stood up for him. everyone leaned a big lesson.

Do not show concern, act like they and their child will be fine. No need to scare the parents, they may already be scared, Be calming. It works. Good luck.

And with that off to a friend’s to catch some of this evening sporting events.

I agree. Had I known when I was young, I wouldn’t have imagined all the crap I did about myself to explain why everyone hated me.

This was in the ’60s so I’m not even sure how aware the education system or doctors were about autism.

I’m the urban beardman, baby; I’ve got speed
I’ve got everything I need
I’m the urban beardman, baby; I can fly
I’m a supersonic guy
I don’t need pleasure
I don’t feel pain
If you were to knock me down I’d just get up again
I’m the urban beardman, baby; I’m makin’ out
I’m all about
I wake up every morning with a smile upon my face
My natural exuberance spills out all over the place
I’m the urban beardman, I’m intelligent and clean
Know what I mean?
I’m the urban beardman, as a lover second to none
It’s a lot of fun
I never let my friends down
I’ve never made a boob
I’m a glossy magazine, an advert in the tube
I’m the urban beardman, baby; here comes the twist—
I don’t exist

I just thought the whole idea behind growing a beard was NOT being vain and caring so much about one’s appearance. So you could just waste less time shaving and spend more time masturbating.

I was so wrong.

re: #191 HappyWarrior

The key thing about dealing with children on the soectrum is patience. Some things will come almost absurdly easy for this little girl while others absurdly difficult. I think that paradox confused my parents. I read at an early age while my social skills lagged.

I have no real experience outside of co-coaching two kids on my son’s recreation-league soccer team who I learned from their parents (I didn’t want to assume) are on the spectrum. (Actually, the other coach’s son may have been, but he never said anything.) Anyway, from my observation, I understand what you are saying. Oftentimes in games, incredible focus, maybe even excessive; in practice sometimes frustration with routine or with other kids. What was great about co-coaching was that I could take one of the little guys off to work on something individually while the other coach worked with everyone else. It was never a case of less skilled vs. more skilled. It was just how they handled the experience. We didn’t win a lot of games, but we had a great team.

ETA: I’m glad this won’t be read, because now I remember that I’m lying. I’ve also had several students on the spectrum. I know this because they have filled out the paperwork to let me know. The challenge in most cases has been to keep them engaged in topics that don’t interest them. All of them have told me this to my face (though I can see it from my vantage point, too). My courses inevitably contain a certain amount of military history, and that seems to have drawn them in. But when I turn to cultural history—bam! So, we have to have individual meetings.

So, there are enough folks here with experience that I feel I can ask: a friend just had her daughter officially diagnosed as on the spectrum today. What/how is the best way for me to support her? This is someone I’ve known for a while and lives cross country from me, but we remain friendly if not close and I want to be supportive on this.
