Planned Parenthood Issues Statement Condemning Hateful Political Rhetoric Around Recent Tragedy

“Words matter, and hateful rhetoric fuels violence”
US News • Views: 52,988

Planned Parenthood Executive Vice President Dawn Laguens has issued a statement about the shootings at their Colorado Springs clinic, accusing Carly Fiorina, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz by name of contributing to the hateful rhetoric and “toxic environment” that reportedly led to this domestic terrorist attack: Planned Parenthood Condemns Political Rhetoric Around Recent Tragedy.

Laguens’ full statement:

“We are grateful for the enormous outpouring of support from people all across the country who are appalled by this act of violence and want to see an end to the hateful rhetoric that fueled it.”

“It is offensive and outrageous that some politicians are now claiming this tragedy has nothing to do with the toxic environment they helped create. Even when the gunman was still inside of our health center, politicians who have long opposed safe and legal abortion were on television pushing their campaign to defund Planned Parenthood and invoking the discredited video smear campaign that reportedly fed this shooter’s rage. Now, Carly Fiorina, Donald Trump, and others are using this tragedy to repeat false claims about Planned Parenthood. Instead of looking for lessons to prevent this from happening in the future, they’re doubling down on their effort to block women from getting preventive health care at Planned Parenthood. Just last week, Ted Cruz accepted the endorsement of a group whose leaders have been convicted and served prison time for threatening to firebomb abortion clinics.”

“One of the lessons of this awful tragedy is that words matter, and hateful rhetoric fuels violence. It’s not enough to denounce the tragedy without also denouncing the poisonous rhetoric that fueled it. Instead, some politicians are continuing to stoke it, which is unconscionable.”

“At Planned Parenthood, our top priority is the safety and wellbeing of our patients and staff. Our doors are open today, in Colorado and across the country, and nothing will deter us from providing high-quality health care to millions of people.”

Dawn Laguens should be commended on her courage to call out the GOP on their demonization and outright lies.
This latest shooting should be laid right at the feet of the GOP. They have blood on their hands. They are the reason a lunatic killed. They are secretly happy. It’s what they wanted. I would bet the farm on that.

Seriously. For as long as I can remember, pro-lifers have been likening abortion to murder and genocide. Hell there was even a website called the Nuremberg Files that publicized the personal info of providers.

It goes to show how insanity escalates if no one will tell them they’ve gone off the rails.
It’s worse with the Conservative cult, because they’ll ignore anyone outside the cult who calls them out, and cult members will probably be labeled “Liberal” and expelled if they speak truth to dangerously-stupid Conservative power.

I posted this in a comment a few days ago:

Timothy Lee Haste pleaded guilty on Monday to criminal mischief after breaking the windows of the EMW Women’s Surgical Center twice within the past month. He was sentenced to one year in jail, though he was conditionally discharged on the grounds that he have no further contact with the complainant — the only full-time abortion clinic in Kentucky. However, volunteer clinic escorts observed him outside of EMW’s front door on Tuesday and Wednesday and claimed he was bragging about his release to the protesters gathered there.

According to Anne — executive director of EMW who declines to give her last name for security reasons — neither the Louisville Metro Police Department nor prosecutors told her he was being released, nor of the conditions that he was not to be near the clinic. She says a call to LMPD has not been returned.

Two days later, Joe tweeted this:

I think the anti-science and anti-woman stuff is wrapped up in a certain kind of fundamentalist theology. If you believe this book is divine revelation and therefore contains all the answers to every universal question, then any sort of thinking that challenges it - even when based on observation and evidence that contradicts this book - must be stopped. But I’ve known some pro-life women (usually Catholic) who I wouldn’t call anti-science or anti-woman, but I haven’t heard any of them make an argument that isn’t based on some sort of theology.

re: #45 jaunte

Yeah, about the only argument I could think of, off the top of my head, was “need babies to replace the people dying” - but when the world population is over 7 billion, I think we’re okay on that point from a policy position.

But, as usual, men make up new doctrine and pass it off as spiritually inspired…

I’ve known some people down here who honestly think that even the clinics that say they don’t do abortions are lying. The dude in Louisville was standing outside calling them murderers, he’s probably not really giving a shit what they do inside, just what he’s been told they do. I’d bet most of the people spouting all this crap have never set foot inside a private ob/gyn practice let alone a PP clinic. The corruption stems in part from the fact that the legislature continues to operate as a part-time venture, which means legislators can hold outside positions, opening up their actions to corrupt activities, coordinating benefits for personal enrichment, etc.

Eliminate the part time legislature - eliminating the outside jobs, and you’d reduce the corruption significantly. Curiously, there’s little support for this in the legislature (because they like their outside gigs).

The charges/reimbursement for transport are carved out exceptions for fetal tissue donations for research under federal law.

(d) DEFINITIONS - For purposes of this section:
(1) The term human fetal tissue’ has the meaning given such term in section 498A(f).
(2) The term interstate commerce’ has the meaning given such term in section 201(b) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
(3) The term valuable consideration’ does not include reasonable payments associated with the transportation, implantation, processing, preservation, quality control, or storage of human fetal tissue.’.

The extremists know this, but don’t want people to pay attention to the law. That’s why the whole PP hearing was a sham. It was built on a lie, and everyone knows it. The GOP just doesn’t give a shit.

Guilty on all counts.

Ouch. That’s gonna leave a mark. I worked in the legislature way back when, and Silver ran the place with an iron fist. He tolerated no dissent and closely managed the Democratic caucus which he was leader of.

One of the three men in the room that negotiated the budgets. He was there when Spitzer got canned. When Joe Bruno got canned. When David Paterson fumbled his way through, and now he’s toast. So much for being the longest running Speaker in state history when his ultimate legacy is one of corruption and covering for sexual assaults among staffers and members of the Assembly.

Good riddance.

Backwoods_Sleuth  Nov 30, 2015 • 1:10:33pm

Less than a week after he was released from jail for twice breaking the windows of the EMW Women’s Surgery Center — and returning to the clinic in the following days to allegedly brag about his release — Timothy Lee Haste was arrested again on Friday two blocks from the clinic on unrelated charges and currently remains incarcerated.

snip

Police reports indicate that Haste’s second arrest on Friday had no direct connection to the EMW clinic, though he also has been charged with violating his probation conditions from last week. Haste was charged with public intoxication, third-degree criminal trespassing and third-degree terroristic threatening on Friday after being found trespassing at a closed business while drunk. The latter charge was due to Haste allegedly telling a police officer at U of L Hospital that “the next time he saw Officer on the street, he was going to ‘Kick Officer’s ass.’”

They’re like the monsters in a horror flick, but instead of ‘Bullets don’t stop them!’, it’s facts that they’re impervious to, as long as it aligns with their preferred reality.

Oh FFS. Pattern of behavior anyone? Given the chance, something flammable and/or a firearm, this guy would be guilty of more than threatening a cop. Come on. WTF?

More insanity:

Major Andrea Brown, LMPD’s First Division Commander, told IL today — prior to her learning about Haste’s second arrest — that she has been in contact with EMW’s director since last week but was not made aware of Haste’s release last Monday.

“I told our guys to please be vigilant around there, look out and make sure he’s not hanging around and harassing people,” said Brown. “I don’t want people to get up in arms… I don’t want people to think we’re not doing what we should be doing. And if we’re not, I told Anne to call and let me know so we can fix that. But unfortunately, sometimes the way the law is written there’s only so much we can do. The best thing to do is stay visible around there, and if we see people that are harassing them — of course we can’t take sides — to handle that situation accordingly.”

snip

Though Haste currently is in jail (he’s deemed “high risk” but has a $100 bond on his new charges), Brown previously indicated that Haste could not be arrested for standing outside the clinic with the other protesters, though she said a detective on the case would check on whether that was true today.

“He can walk on the sidewalk,” said Brown. “If he’s engaged in any kind of criminal activity and threatening them, then we can take action for that. But as we can tell right now, there’s not any kind of order that we see, but we’ll be looking into that today. And if so, we’ll let everyone know that there’s an order for him to have no contact with the facility.

The freaking order to stay away was a condition of his release last Monday!!!

There are certain times when duct tape is the only option.

I was at a Target a while back, with a lady friend (not lady friend lady friend, but a friend who is a lady), one of us was in the process of moving or having to do some sort of home improvement project… so we were standing in the aisle where they had the duct tape (among other items), and they had Hello Kitty duct tape - I told her she should get it, just because. She kind of blew me off and I told her, “the only two tools you really need are a hammer and duct tape.” She rolled her eyes, but there was a guy standing in the aisle who kind of chuckled. We look at him and he says, “yeah, never really thought about it, but he’s right.”

So, that’s my life advice for the day: hammer and duct tape. If you can’t solve the problem with those two items, it’s not solvable.

So…sending the Syrian refugees to Indian reservations. Even if true, wouldn’t RWNJ kinda like this? This way good White Patriot Americans wouldn’t have to be terrorized by women and children from the ME, the refugees would be sequestered from the regular population?

“After all these years and millions of babies that have gone to their death, violence is to be anticipated,” said Judie Brown, president of American Life League, in a phone interview with MSNBC. “Because it’s acceptable to violently kill a baby, so why isn’t it acceptable to violently kill other people?

“We never approve of violence against anybody, whether it’s the unborn babies or the clients of Planned Parenthood or anybody else,” Ann Scheidler, vice president of the Pro-Life Action League, told MSNBC. But, she added, “it’s not the fault of the pro-life movement that someone found out that Planned Parenthood is doing these things. It’s the fault of Planned Parenthood for selling the baby parts.

Interesting. The two pastors Kornacki (MTP Daily) is interviewing said that when they met with Trump, Trump didn’t really talk much with them, his people did. They said they asked him about his overall tone in his speeches and about how Trump handled the BLM protester at his one campaign speech. Trump claims he didn’t know the protester was Black initially and as far as tone, the Trump people did all the talk about that. They aren’t flat out calling him out (and I understand that…this is Trump) but they do not seem at all impressed with TRUMP®.

Just as expected. Donald Trump is who we thought he was!

This idiot really thinks those people from the 70s and 80s just went away? The only thing keeping them at bay has been the increased security, training and awareness of the clinic personnel and the fortification of the buildings. The Army of God still exists, they’re just underground more now and use the internet to do their shit. The fuckers are still in GA, they never left.

I often wonder how many women and doctors are harassed and threatened that we don’t hear about. The “protestors” take down license plate numbers, they have medical personnel that pass on info to them in some places. They’ve outed and harassed clinic volunteers online, even calling their places of employment. Leave it to some guy who has never set foot in a clinic to run his mouth and tell the rest of us how good it really is.

Bullshit.

Our librul media actually published this bullshit:

Ted Cruz cites reports that Planned Parenthood shooter could be ‘transgendered leftist activist.’ What?

Overmanwarrior, another conservative blog, summarized the reports thusly: “This is just further proof that liberals make most of the problems in our society. They feed anger toward Planned Parenthood with immoral justifications, then they create a loose society full of perverts, peeping toms, and losers who are men who think they are women and women who want to be men.”

And many conservatives on Twitter argue that the media has been much too quick to jump to the most obvious motive for the shooting. Some even questioned whether Planned Parenthood was specifically targeted.

Cruz is just proof that ugly goes to the bone.

There was actually a good article in the WaPo about how Rubio is mostly a hit with older voters. Lots of quotes by older voters saying young people “should” like this guy. I am not impressed. He likes to play both sides of an argument, doesn’t vote a lot, and is frankly just as extreme as Cruz, Carson, and Trump in many ways. There’s nothing moderate abut a man who opposes abortion in all cases and is quite hostile to LGBT rights too. If he were nominated, I think it would become clear immediately that he’s like so many other young GOPers, an old man in a young man’s body.

If Rubio wins the nomination, the entire campaign will turn into “See this young guy run against that old crone Hillary!,” with various attempts to try to sell him as being “in” with younger voters and appealing to minority voters by virtue of being a Cubano. And all of his positions will “evolve,” but only within the confines of the base’s demands. So he won’t suddenly develop a love of gay folks, but he will suddenly express “openness” to some “compromise” measure like civil unions or a law that “protects religious freedom” while saying he won’t outright call for a federal ban on gay marriage.

re: #249 dog philosopher ஐஒஔ௸

remember how in 2012 a number of gop candidates rose and fell? i think this cycle a number of alternative to trump will rise and fall

I think the model is fundamentally different. In 2012 there was a serious candidate who could obviously do reasonably do well in the actual candidate who was in the lead from Feb 2011. The GOP radicals really didn’t want to vote for him though, so they were casting around for an alternative, which lead to all the other no hopers surging to the top, pushing Romney into 2nd place temporarily, before they each faded as it was clear they had no chance in the actual election.

This time is different as i) The only person who can be classified as the front-runner is Trump, and he has been the front-runner for longer than is realistically left in the nomination process. ii) There is no clear establishment candidate who could clearly do well in the actual election. Rubio, Cruz and ¿Jeb? Bush are all terrible candidates and the GOP establishment know it. Although they could probably get behind Rubio, he is such a lightweight, and has consistent rumours surrounding him, that it would be a massively risky bet.

I don’t like making predictions - but the most likely outcome is either Cruz or Trump being the nominee. Even if all the people who wanted a ‘GOP establishment person’ to win voted for Rubio, that would still probably only put him at 25% which is a lot less than the maybe 40% a candidate needs to start appearing inevitable.

And I still say Trump is going to get bored and start looking for a way to quit his campaign without appearing to be a ‘loser’. If Cruz could make him the right offer, then I would be zero percent surprised to see Trump stop his campaign and say that he realizes that Cruz is the right guy for president.

re: #280 Jebediah, RBG

I’ve often wondered what it would take for a third party/independent to do well in the general election. I’m thinking one of the two major party nominees would have to have a complete and utter break down (I’m talking Stockdale at the ‘92 VP debate), and the third party/independent would have to be acceptable to the party that saw the meltdown.

So, under those circumstances, let’s say Trump wins the nomination and during his acceptance speech at the convention quotes Hitler or uses the 14 words. Is there a republican who could run as an independent that’s not currently in the race? Would his role be anything more than spoiler? And nightmare scenario: what do Republican members of the House do nobody gets to 270 electoral votes? (Given that the vote would be by state, all those square states in the middle with 1 or 2 representatives become very important).

Tenure policies violate standards, UW faculty leaders warn

New tenure policies under consideration for faculty members across the University of Wisconsin System fail to meet professional standards for academia and jeopardize the system’s reputation, according to faculty leaders at three campuses.

The Legislature last summer eliminated tenure from state law — something faculty had considered ironclad — and directed the governor-appointed Board of Regents to establish its own tenure policy.

A special task force appointed by the board is meeting Monday to consider a draft policy with a key directive: It must align with broad layoff provisions legislators inserted into state law as part of the biennial budget. The provisions give the UW System flexibility to dismiss tenured faculty in the midst of tight budgets and fast-changing workforce needs.

Y’all need to read this piece from a few years back about good old Genocide Ben and the rest of the Breitbart Insane Asylum members.

Choice tidbits from that:

Less than a week after Breitbart’s heart popped like a water balloon, the heirs to his legacy were revealed on Fox News’ Sean Hannity Show. Seated together in a remote studio were Breitbart’s new editor-in-chief Joel B. Pollak, and his mini-me, a weasel-faced anti-masturbation crusader named Ben Shapiro.

another:

Pollak and Shapiro both harbor deluded fantasies of becoming the telegenic faces and voices of the conservative movement. The only thing holding them back: their faces and voices.

last one, and I’ll stop:

Ben Shapiro’s most useful talent is that he makes Joel Pollak look sane, cool and relaxed. Shapiro’s job is to fidget nervously while holding his tongue, like his bladder’s about to explode through his nose — providing needed contrast to Pollak.

I think Truman had a nice quote though. He was saying that Franklin Pierce was probably our best looking president but as President, he was bad as Coolidge and Buchanan. Meanwhile Lincoln, a man who Southern papers and even his own General McClellan likened to an ape was probably our best. The last part is my attribution, Truman never talked about Lincoln’s looks in the quote just Pierce so it’s clear.

The whole concept seemed so freakin’ stupid to me. I was embarrassed by it. I know if anyone I ever dated started spewing some of the crazy shit I see from some of the fox ‘babes’ I’d laugh, shake my head and walk away.

If I were young and single, and out with some beautiful woman who spewed crazy Conservative bullshit, the pedantic, empirical Liberal in me would be at war with the horny guy who lives in my head, who’d say anything to get laid.

But at SOME POINT, I’d say, “Now hold on a minute. What you just said is total bullshit.”

I remember in the 2000 election, a very homophobic friend insisting to me that women would favor Bush over Gore because Bush was more “attractive.” I wouldn’t call GWB ugly but I do think Gore probably was the more handsome of the two men running. I think Truman had a nice quote though. He was saying that Franklin Pierce was probably our best looking president but as President, he was bad as Coolidge and Buchanan. Meanwhile Lincoln, a man who Southern papers and even his own General McClellan likened to an ape was probably our best.

In terms of things I have considered when voting for president, looks has never appeared on the list.

For any of you who block proactively like I do: I stumbled into a rat’s nest of white supremacists about an hour ago and below are the ones I blocked. There’s a good deal of crossover between them & the really rabid Islamophobes, but I didn’t include the latter in the list.

Generally speaking they’re quite fond of Trump, Ann Coulter, and anyone with a conspiracy theory that fits their world view (I also saw a couple of mentions of Justin Raimondo). Oh and this guy, who I’d never heard of until today (thankfully): Wayne Allyn Root. He sounds suitably unhinged. Note that his Wiki page lists his religion as Jewish, Born Again Christian. I have no idea if he’s supposed to be an actual convert or a Messianic Jew (an appellation that has always struck me as a creepily disingenuous).

Speaking of those who claim both religions, I’m seeing a good bit of crossover—maybe moronic convergence is a better term— between Messianic Jews like this guy Michael L. Brown who I ran across the other day when looking into Christian Reconstructionism/Dominionism, and the white supremacists/nationalists.

Be warned, if you look at any of their timeslines you’re going to see a lot of nasty racist & antisemitic shit along with the usual Hitler love and whining about supposed white persecution and genocide.

What always amused me about Mitt was reading about how he PROTESTED in favor of the Vietnam War and then did his mission in France. Many things wrong with his health some of which the medicine is disabling and painful A man that was frankly a workaholic that provided well for his large kind family. I respect him in more ways than I can elucidate. I respect his decision, and I think he felt something coming. he is in the hospital tonight getting tests but declining in energy. I can’t imagine what it took to say those words to his wife.

I’m struck right now by how our parents teach us until they pass. They showed us how to be whatever age we saw them in as the decades flew by. In our fifties, our parents teach us how to be seventy or eighty or ninety. How to live life in that decade.

CL, have you read Nixonland ever? That’s a fascinating read. The author’s thesis is pretty much to understand how a lot of people who had supported Kennedy, LBJ, and Humphrey found themselves supporting Nixon in his landslide over McGovern in 1972. Rick Perlstein apparently also has a follow up book about the rise of the Reagan era that sounds interesting. I remember an old L&O episode I watched. It was about a cold case of a campus security guard who had shot an undercover cop who was an agent provaceteur among the student activists. The guy’s son said something that stood with me “My old man made fun of Nixon in the 60’s but then he voted for him.” People like my mom’s folks were that though I don’t think either of them ever entertained the thought of voting for Nixon or Reagan for that matter. So many books, so little time. *SIGH*

I feel that. Speaking of white nationalist stuff, I watched an interesting PBS documentary last night- Klansville USA about the North Carolina KKK in the 1960’s and how its leader a guy named Bob Jones (no relation ot the famous college in SC) took advantage of the anxieties felt by many poor Southern whites. I too am fascinated by a lot of the stuff you’re reading.

Oh I honestly didn’t know heh. I was just ribbing. I actually don’t root for a single D.C team. My uncle was giving me crap about at that. I pointed out to him that he was born in Detroit and I don’t see him rooting for the Lions or Tigers. He tried saying they were his second favorite teams to which I had to call bs but we laughed about it. I consider myself a Western Pennsylvanian at heart. To use an old saying, kittens born in the oven aren’t biscuits.

My mother’s family is all from Kentucky, my father’s from Washington, so I find myself rooting for the Cats and the Seahawks every year. But I’ve lived so long in Virginia that I might as well be a native by this point.

Been out of the loop with De Soto’s Revenge. Did anyone point out that Assoc Professor Shields was very likely one of CCJ’s teachers/mentors at Claremont? They overlap.

Technically, Kentucky was part of Virginia before it got carved out as a separate commonwealth, so Targetpractice has both of them covered nicely.

I can’t go to the annual Slavic picnic without seeing Steelers gear. Now granted there’s tons of W-PA transplants here. But when I was in New Mexico some years back, I even saw a Spanish Terrible Towel. Should have gotten a photo of that.

Yeah I know. I was just teasing. I like Kentucky even if you do have Bevin incoming. The horses, bourbon, and bluegrass make up for that.

Damn! If I’d have known Trump was in my city, I would have attended, and I would have been the “Belle of the Ball,” being that I’d probably the only black person in Macon there. s/s The Centreplex is yooge, but it appears that Trump didn’t fill it in Macon today. Seriously, I couldn’t have attended. It would have taken all of my will to keep myself from standing up and shouting, “You lie!”

Last campaign, was on an OFA team canvassing (badly) in Crestview FL—nutcase central. We came up a driveway w/ a car covered in Steelers stickers.

“This one’s mine.”
