So Long, Ted Cruz. It’s Been Real.

Stick a fork in him, he’s done
Politics • Views: 49,028

As I write this, Ted Cruz has been gassing on and on at his concession speech in Indiana, but he’s toast. Donald Trump crushed him tonight, again. And this is the end of his campaign.

So the theocratic GOP candidate is done. Thank the flying spaghetti monster. The Trumpenstein is now the presumptive GOP nominee. And cyberstalker Chuck C. Johnson is out $5400.

Now we watch as #NeverTrump morphs slowly, reluctantly into #GoTrumpGo.

If you had told me a year ago that I’d be less than 110% thrilled about Cruz exiting the race, I’d have slapped you silly.

If you had told me a year ago that Cruz would be the next-to-last man standing (Kasich who?) in the GOP race, I’d have laughed in your face.

If you had told me a year ago that Trump would be in the lead with a clear path to the nomination, I’d have left for Canada right then and there…

A year ago, the conventional wisdom was that Trump was a curiosity, a bloviating douchebag that had no real chance at the nomination and any talk from him about running was aimed at boosting his TV ratings. So many times over the past 12 months, the demise of his campaign was predicted, polling plateaus predicted, and confident assumptions made that he wouldn’t make it past Iowa.

I think we all should take a moment and realize that reality is far more warped and insane than any of us could have ever imagined.

As I have said before, I am far from a Trump fan. But if this year’s nomination portents the death of the religious right as well as GOP economic orthodoxy, then good riddance! Inasmuch as I think Trump is a buffoon, and his rhetoric on immigration, race, women, and other topics have no place at all, I do recognize that economic topics such as outsourcing, trade, and the plight of working class whites are all legitimate topics (though Trump’s handling of these will also be disastrous).

It will be interesting to see if RedState manages to walk themselves back to a position of supporting Trump as the GOP nominee.

One of the front pagers there went so far as to say if it comes to a choice between Hitler (i.e., Trump) and Hillary in the general election, he’d vote for Hillary.

Walking that back would be a challenge even for the super-amnesia powers all RWNJs have.

It’s amazing how long it takes some people to see the writing set before them.

Yet he still doesn’t take his revelation to the next step - to accept that Salem Communications, the owner of RedState, have at their center the very same essence as the list of right-wing pundits he now dismisses.

Fundamentally, the existential crisis Howe and others avoid is that their very “principles” are no more absolute than Drudge’s, Coulter’s, etc., quest for adoration and money and popularity.

It might be too late for states like Michigan and Wisconsin to play games with their general election laws to give electoral votes to the Republicans in 2016, because there are probably deadlines in place to prevent changes sufficiently close to a general election.

Also, this kind of thing would really be playing with fire in terms of motivating Democrats and left-leaning independents.

True, but I’m personally going to treat any comment coming from a right winger as being made to divide the Democrats. But I also don’t think we need to panic too much about Trump basically being done. He has one month, Clinton’s already started pivoting toward the general election, and the country does not favor Trump.

It’ll be interesting to see the Republican party choose between supporting Trump or not. McConnell said he’s going to try to come up with a strategy to allow Congress people to oppose Trump. That will cost them money and time.

Add in much of what we hear is all media driven through their amplification to make it all sound bigger than what it is. They don’t speak to the people that really hate Trump. Often they let the Trump mouthpieces spew.

That take can be a real problem if you hang on the ‘net too. It all sounds dramatically bad. Hillary doesn’t stand a chance.

I vote sanity wins this election. Not enough people have totally lost their minds. First though, a little of the Trump drama is going to make people look at him. But that will be 20-40 years.

I imagine by then, another party will have formed, and be able to take its place.

That is very difficult to do; local politicians shape their message for their electorate. Remember, right now the GOP holds more elective offices around the nation than they ever have before.

You are right. In fact, Hillary may bring a Democratic Congress into office with her. Reposted from below:
Anyway, its become obvious that Clinton is going to win big, and with Trump at the top of the ticket she might be fortunate enough to enter office with a Democratic Congress. That would give them two years to get some decent legislation passed before the GOP regains control in the 2018 midterms. So we should talk about her legislative agenda. It has to be probably just two or three big things which are must pass. I suggest sensible immigration reform and a big infrastructure bill with an emphasis on building a 21st century smart energy grid to zero out carbon emissions as rapidly as is politically feasible. As a bonus, student loan reform to ensure kids aren’t loaded with unmanageable debt for life. What say you?

Senator Sasse was pilloried at the time on his Facebook page by people from all over the country calling him a traitor (and worse).

Hell, I’ve already seen it happen in real time for the past six months. Before Iowa, a “serious” conservative asserted to me that a Walker or Bush would be the nominee because the voters would want somebody with “executive experience.”

Then both got knocked off, so he became a Rubio fan because “voters want somebody who’s young and charismatic.”

Then Marco got knocked off, so it became “Well, I think Cruz will be the nominee because he’s got experience.”

And yet, in recent days, he’s suddenly found himself talking up the “outsider” bit, the idea that this is an election that’s “anti-establishment,” and thinks Trump will win because he “tells it like it is.”

Clinton wins Missouri.
Clinton wins Utah (okay, one poll has a tie, another has her up by 3%).

Trump leads by only 3% in Mississippi.

Tied in North Carolina (but trend is a Clinton win).

Die-hard Cruz freepers are jumping ship.

Then there is this guy, who hasn’t posted in some time but came back to pose a question: What the hell happened to this place???
It is well worth preserving before it gets the ZOT.

I haven’t posted on FR since the 2012 election. For years prior, I feared that FR was turning away from what I once loved. That most of the sensible people here left, leaving us with nothing but conspiracy theorists, wannabe Stormfronters, finger-waggers, and wackos.

My fears have been confirmed. This post is addressed to the people of FR who support Donald Trump, or are going to “come around” to Trump, too. If you’re one of the few remaining non-Trump supporters, this isn’t aimed at you.

Before I continue, I, too once found Trump to be entertaining and possibly worth being a candidate. Back in 2010-2011 or so.

Then, I got my head out of my ass.

I can’t believe this place. Donald Trump is a disaster. A completely unmitigated disaster, and you people are lining up to fellate his not-as-yuge-as-he-claims member like it’s a Goddamned lollipop. Because Mexicans and China, or something, I don’t know.

I am NEVER VOTING FOR TRUMP. NEVER. This man represents everything wrong with the GOP, all the bad, none of the good.

If liberals wanted to create a cartoon character to represent the bogeyman conservative they want everyone to fear, they couldn’t have done a better job than this orange-skinned, fascist joke of a man. I for one think we need to communicate the positives of conservatism to win in the future, since the natural conservative base is shrinking (relative to the overall electorate) every year. Instead, Trump drives them away.

Trump will irreparably damage the Republican Party and the conservative movement. Even if he’s not a racist or a bigot, he is perceived as one, and does absolutely nothing to counteract it. In fact, he even refused to denounce the KKK and David Duke. The ONLY ACCEPTABLE RESPONSE to that was complete, immediate, and undeniable disavowment of his endorsement. I don’t for a MOMENT believe his bullshit explanation that he wasn’t sure who he was. Really?

I suspect the second one is closer to where we are today.

If those states really are in play, there’s no way Trump can win - he’d have too much ground to defend. Also, if the numbers are to be believed, I’d have to think that Louisiana and possibly Texas would also be in play. But we don’t have any recent numbers on that.

The thing about right wing drones like Steve Deace is that they lie all the time, with no hesitation or shame, if they think it will benefit them. He’s not going to change his party affiliation.

Even if he changes his party affiliation, it’s not like he’s going to suddenly start voting for Democrats. He’ll still vote Republican but “only hesitantly as an independent because after looking at everything, they really are the lesser of two evils.”

Conservatives and Republicans deserve Donald Trump. End of story. Ronald Reagan who they all love did a lot of the same racist shit Trump does but did it in a more subtle way. Cruz is equally as bigoted. You know why they hate Trump? It’s because they’re afraid that he’ll ruin the conservative name brand. It’s not that he’s a disgusting bigot. It’s that they’re afraid that conservatism’s image will be in shambles because of this guy. Trump is not conservatism’s illness, he is their symptom but so was Reagan, W Bush, McCain’s campaign in 2008, and Romney in 2012 too.

I was just wonder that maybe… we’ve moved past democracy and elections, as we used to have them, and into a new societal mode.

Maybe as a collective we are deciding the elections shouldn’t matter, at least on an individual office basis, even an office as important as POTUS.

I’ve wondered why some Americans get so fascinated with Brit royalty.

Perhaps we deeply long for a national figurehead, as opposed to wonky civil mechanics.

Perhaps America wants Drumpfskind to be that figurehead. Not to have him really change anything, just to be there for show, for our national rituals to which we cling.

We’ve hardly yet had democracy and elections. We’re getting closer.

I don’t know when I find them more annoying. When they win and think it’s the greatest thing ever of when they lose and it can only because of fraud. Okay so Bernie won Indiana tonight. Kudos Bernie but it was much more close than any of Clinton’s wins last Tuesday. Bernie’s whole campaign is all about the small victories without a single convincing victory. He’s been treading water frankly since he got his ass handed to him in South Carolina. To use a basketball analogy, Bernie’s been down by ten points since the first quarter but sometimes he makes a three to make it a seven point game but then Hillary goes on 6-0 run to make it over ten points again. Bernie’s chance to gain any momentum was South Carolina and he blew it.

Just for fun, a look at the most recent statewide polls for the general election:

Clinton wins Arizona.
Clinton wins Florida by double digits.
Clinton wins Georgia by double digits.
Clinton wins Missouri.
Clinton wins Utah (okay, one poll has a tie, another has her up by 3%).

Trump leads by only 3% in Mississippi.

Tied in North Carolina (but trend is a Clinton win).

Assuming everything else stayed the same, that would put Clinton just short of 400 electoral votes.

Now that’s what I call a mandate.

The state Forest Service and Colorado State University completed a study in 2013 that found that about 20% of Colorado’s population and 25% of Colorado homes are within in a “red zone”, or a place with high likelihood of fires. El Paso County is one of the top three counties for fire danger with 45% of its residents within a red zone.[g] Colorado has seen a 300 percent increase in wildfires between 2003 and 2013.

Approximately 45 percent of the population of El Paso County, or about 278,000 people, live in a fire danger zone. About 20,000 people and about 7,000 homes are located in the Black Forest Fire evacuation zone. Census data shows that half of those homes were built in the last decade. The Colorado Springs Briargate subdivision, just south of Black Forest, is certain to be exposed to fire in the future. Houses built in the forests are particularly in danger of fires.[69]

He won a red state that doesn’t matter in November. Or something.

And IN is an open primary. I’m sure a good portion of Trump supporters dropped tickets for Bernie just because.

In a way I want to feel for Grover. All own his own allies think he’s a terrorist sympathizer because he has a beard and a Muslim wife but then as I said above he’s involved himself in to some very rotten causes. He deserves to be part of a party and movement that’s about ot make Trump its standard bearer.

Has Bernie won any states that are even close to resembling the Democratic party’s demographics and the nation’s as a whole? Seems to me that he relies on lily white states to win. That doesn’t mean I think Bernie’s a racist but he sure as hell does benefit from the absence of a diverse population. That’s not what a party that prides itself on diversity should nominate.

Actually, every bit of venom should be brought on Grover because he’s a true anarchist-after all, anyone who says he wants to shrink government small enough so it can fit in a bathtub so he can drown it deserves that label. He’s one who if I ever saw in a life-or-death situation I’d triage his ass last.

Would you say “She married into the job”? Then it’s “who”. If you’d say “Her married into the job”, then it’s “whom”. IOW, replace the demonstrative with what it’s standing in for.

Having lived in the Briargate Area, I know why the Forest Service singled it out. Most home owners there have put huge numbers of trees in their yards, in doing so, creating an artificial forests of sorts.

In addition, there are a series of ridges across the city, all north of downtown, going SW to NE, with forests of varying sizes on them, that would enable a fire to leap frog from Ridge to ridge, and spread the fire into the neighborhoods around them.

Waldo Canyon, in fact, came within no more than 2000-3000 feet of one of these ridges. We came very close to a really, really bad incident on June 26, 2012.

Sanders hasn’t won a state whose demographics are similar to the Democratic party’s. It’s a big weakness of his. He thought he could run an economic focused campaign, but really got blindsided by the emotions expectations of the minority groups.

Edit: After reading, I didn’t like emotions. Not the right expression. Replaced it with expectations.

We have a special reorganisation meeting of our village board on May 13, because of vacancies on the board. I am the second-most senior person on the board. Question before the board will be: Do we put the atheist hippie liberal in as chairman pro tempore (vice-mayor)? Stay tuned… .

Totally didn’t understand the black community and was too set in his ways to change when it became obvious that his approach was a miss. Anybody who had a black friend or had two brain cells to rub together knew that having Cornel West as a spokesman would kill your outreach to the black community.

I talked politics with some skiers on the last day Vail Mountain was open. Whenever someone told me they were moving to Canada if Trump is elected I told them “Not me, I’m staying to fight this madness.”

And I say that here, too. I’m not leaving my home, President Trump be damned.

As someone who’s moved to Canada cannot begin to tell you how difficult it is to move here. And I married a Canadian. Its reams upon reams of paperwork and months upon months of waiting. Its not an easy task.

One of my HS friends did the same thing - he called it a “landed immigrant” process, he lives in ON but commutes across the border to work in the US.

As for me, I have the ability to claim Dutch citizenship through what is called an Option process (Dutch mother who did not obtain US citizenship at time of birth, non-Dutch father.)

Sanders didn’t really give a fuck about black voters, his entire campaign was modeled as a mirror image of Trump’s, constructed around white working class angst, aka “Reagan Democrats.” It was insultingly dismissive of the importance of minority voters within the Democratic Party in 2016. West and Killer Mike were just there to provide a thin patina of color, a semblance of Black outreach aimed at assuaging the sensitivities of Bernie’s younger white supporters who would have bristled in the complete absence of African American campaign surrogates. Nina Turner had a better reputation and might have had a stronger impact if she’d been brought on earlier, and if they’d encouraged her to talk up Sanders instead of tearing down Clinton.

The best thing about the current Democratic Party is that it looks like emergent America, not what we are now but what we are steadily becoming. It looks almost exactly like what we will be in 30 years. Bernie tried to build his campaign around the Democratic primary electorate of the past, and it cost him dearly. Let’s hope it’s the last time anybody tries to pull that shit.

Come now, you know better. The President won both elections by better than 50% of the popular vote and trounced his opponents in the electoral college, and still the media insisted that he had no mandate.

Only Republicans winning by the skin of their teeth have “mandates.”

You don’t need to get rid of *all* of the trees. The biggest thing with homes in forested areas up in the Colorado foothills is to create defensible space between your property and the forest, which means culling timber and large fauna at least 30 feet from any structure. This has been the recommended protocol for a couple of decades now in the foothills of Colorado. It’s not a law, and many many property owners in the foothills do not have defensible space between their property and the forest. A lot of times the forest is right next to their kitchen window.

I’ve seen it over and over. Even at Waldo Canyon. Houses that had defensible space were spared while every house around them for a mile or two were completely destroyed.

re: #469 gwangung

“Anybody who had a black friend or had two brain cells to rub together knew that having Cornel West as a spokesman would kill your outreach to the black community.”
EXACTLY. When a politician chooses campaign surrogates, s/he should choose them on the basis of his campaign’s major planks, not as an attack dog or for the reason of having a person of a certain race to offer as an example of, “Those people really like me!” I’m black, and I’ve just never warmed to Cornel West because although he talks a good game, I’ve seen very little he’s done to actually help Americans living in poverty. I view him as begin as big of a grifter as Sarah Palin, and he is also very opinionated, arrogant, thinks he’s always right, and appears to be very selfish. If Trump thinks that trotting out those two black YouTube women is going to get most of us to vote for him, he’s mistaken. I don’t listen to them any more than I listen to Cornel West.
