I know that “Never Gonna Give You Up” has become Rick Astley’s signature song, but ‘Together Forever’ has always been my preferred song of his:

Rich people hunting large game like elephants in canned hunts for sport is barbaric and stupid. I can promise you the Trump doofus didn’t eat that elephant or use it for anything but bragging rights.

I grew up in a family of sportsmen and hunters. My cousins and uncles routinely go to hunt deer and smaller game, or go fishing. They eat what they kill. They’ve always been responsible hunters. Elephant hunters don’t fit that description.

It’s part of growing up in many parts of Texas, too. That’s where my cousins learned it. I’ve been around it all my life. Doesn’t bother me, even if I’ll never go hunting or fishing personally.

I have no desire to be up at the ass end of what-the-fuck-o’clock in the morning to sit in a deer blind or on a boat with a fishing rod in my hands. If someone else wants to and they’re RESPONSIBLE about it, more power to them. Hunting large game for sport in a canned hunt isn’t responsible.

IMO normal people who want to go to Africa these days on safari go to shoot photos of animals.

I was lucky enough to get to do one a few years back. One of the most amazing trips I’ve been on. I got to “pet” a wild elephant. I was looking at the photo of that moment earlier today. It amazes me how gentle it was. Came close to getting trampled by a heard of male water buffaloes. Was stared down by a male lion from 6 feet away etc etc etc so many memories that still blow my mind. (BTW some of the nicest people I’ve ever met and spent time with live in Botswana. Very normal there for people you’ve just met to have deep meaningful conversation with you given you’re that type of person.)

The level of asshole you have to be to get on a plane and fly to Africa from NYC to shoot an elephant is off the scale of normal human behavior.

“… The eldest Trump son also took to Twitter to respond to a flurry of angered messages from fans. “I’m a hunter, for that I make no apologies,” he wrote. “I can assure you it was not wasteful… . The villagers were so happy for the meat which they don’t often get to eat.”

“In some parts its over populated,” he said of elephants in Africa. “Bottom line with out hunters $ there wouldn’t be much left of africa. Eco is nice but no $”

There’s no sport or subsistence value in Westerners flying to Africa and killing elephants, at all. Nobody does it alone or in pairs, it takes a massive hunting party with serious logistics and infrastructure to do it safely, without wasting the vast majority of the meat. They’re also sentient creatures, they have some degree of language like communication and are one of the few animals known to use tools. Only the most insecure assholes on the planet consider that kind of packaged, portered excursion to be legitimate hunting.

Now compare that to when Duke ran as a Republican twenty five years ago and George H.W Bush’s response. Also note that the GOP didn’t have someone like Steve Scalise who bragged about being Duke without the baggage in their house leadership during that time either.

Accompanying all this has been an ersatz anti-elitism, with Republicans who champion tax cuts for the wealthy insisting that they are the authentic voices of the working class because they love guns, hate political correctness, and tout their affection for country music.

Trump outdid the party leadership on that front, too, and the absurd logic of this chicken-fried Marxism was reached on Tuesday night when the proletarian Donald Trump Jr. denounced “a special class of crony elites at the top of the heap.” The word “chutzpah” will be retired when this campaign ends.

It’s non-rebuke rebuke. It’s done in a superficial way, without any acknowledgement of what it is about David Duke that requires rebuking. And his followers know it’s not a rebuke, it’s just Trump playing the imagined “gotcha” game.

Oh no doubt about it. Anyhow, I am glad Clinton talked about Kaine’s background as a civil rights lawyer today because it really highlights what kind of man Kaine is versus Trump who actually got sued for housing discrimination. I believe it was a case he did pro-bono too. In fact, I was shocked with how many pro-bono cases Kaine did as a young civil rights lawyer. If their dads didn’t hate each other so much, I’d say it would be a good idea to advise a playdate with the Romney boys. And yes I think the Romney sons were cut from the same cloth. Recall the one son saying he wanted to punch Obama during the debate.

Doctor Strange Official Trailer 2

Looks good; so does the trailer for Wonder Woman. Maybe - just maybe - DC has finally got their game on (along with the upcoming Suicide Squad).

So far, only the Daily Mail tabloid is reporting it, as it’s just rumor up to this point, but it looks like the International Olympic Committee (the IOC) is going to ban all Russian athletes from participating in the upcoming Rio Olympics.

And WW? First DC movie in a very long time that I actually want to see. Suicide Squad is interesting but WW is fascinating.

Yeah, Wonder Woman looks genuinely interesting, that’s for sure. Looks to be set around the time of WW1 or somewhere thereabouts. Sort of what like Marvel did with the first Captain America film.

A pissing match between the Holocaust denial gurus: Faurisson v. Berg.

Dear Fredrick,
I see you are wondering why Fritz Berg behaves towards me as he does.
My answer is that I myself would like to know his reasons with certainty.
Gene Brugger used to say that Fritz Berg got angry with me when he realized that, although he was an engineer, he had never grasped as well as I that, in order to demolish the Big Red Lie of the Holocaust, one of the best ways to proceed was with a “nuts and bolts revisionism”. I for one was working like a member of what in France we call “the technical police” and “the scientific police”, or like a forensic examiner. I wanted the accusers of NS Germany not to show me any more testimonies or any other blabla until they’d shown me “the scene of the crime” and “the crime weapon”.
Remember: “Show me or draw me a Nazi gas chamber”. And I was lucky enough to find, on March 19, 1976, the plans - which had been kept hidden by our Eastern liars - of the five crematoria at Auschwitz and Birkenau. As Germar Rudolf would say years and years afterwards, that’s the way “Faurisson pul[led] the trigger”.
Faurisson, the specialist of Greek and Latin and modern French literature, along with “Appraisal of Texts and Documents (Literature, History, Media)”. Not Berg, the engineer.
And something else. I think it was in 1993. I was observing the inauguration of the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington. I was outside admiring the splendid horses of the police when a journalist asked me whether I was Faurisson, and if he could ask me some questions. I agreed. There I was answering his questions when I felt someone approaching from behind. Suddenly I received a rather violent push and nearly fell down to my left. Fritz Berg was the pusher! And - mind you - I heard him saying to the journalist something like: “This guy has had his time with you. I am the one you have to ask your questions”.
I was so shocked and I felt so ashamed all at the same time of Fritz Berg, the journalist and myself that I slowly withdrew and went back to look at the horses.
I suppose I have never mentioned that incident in writing.
I must say that, if the man is so angry with me it might also be, at least partly, because, right at the beginning when I first met him, I also met his mother. I guarantee you that she looked a perfect “Yiddische Momme”. He himself looks like a Jew. When I’d told him I was of Scottish descent by my mother I could not help asking him whether his mother and himself were not of Jewish descent. Perhaps I even asked what her maiden name was. You must understand that in France in those days there were quite a few Jews on the revisionist side.
I do not remember his reaction exactly but he did not appreciate the question(s) that probably a good many people had already put to him.

So, I tune into the Bros and fence-sitters who have insisted for weeks that they were never going to vote for Hillary no matter what…and find that they’re still not going to vote for her, but now think the DNC “leak” means Bernie should go full Cruz on her during the convention or else be viewed as having betrayed the “revolution.”

This, folks, is how you totally destroy whatever little shred all the progress that “progressives” made this year. If Bernie does pull something during the convention, it’s not going to convince the DNC that they were wrong not to love him, it’s going to convince them that letting him run at all was a mistake.

In different times I would have been outraged about the lack of decorum behind the scenes. Now is not the time… What happened, happened. Moving on.

I can’t find myself outraged because the Sanders camp had been attacking the DNC for months, had filed a frivolous lawsuit against the party, and (as we learned later) was actively working to undermine the party in those states where he lost. Plus it was May of this year, weeks after NY and the reality that Bernie had no realistic path to the nomination. Political parties are not bound by some unwritten rule of neutrality, they’re in it to win it. Time that was spent entertaining the idea that Bernie could still win was time that could have gone to chopping out the knees from under Trump.

So yeah, tl;dr, the party had every right to be pissed and the tone taken in the emails is totally justified.

We had the ongoing spectacle of the GOP publicly working to undermine Trump, which did the party no favors at all. Did we really need months of “DEMS IN DISARRAY!” headlines because the DNC decided to say out loud that it wanted Bernie gone?

Yes, that’s exactly how officials should be. It doesn’t matter in the least if a political party is a “private” entity or not. In their capacity as officials they no longer belong only to themselves. So if you can’t adhere to a faux neutrality and maintain such even in official communications, then quit so that the party is not negatively affected by being associated with you?

Yes. There is no guaranteed expectation of privacy in electronic communications.

Well the party did everything it could to maintain neutrality. It not only allowed Sanders to run, it did so in a primary season that is actually geared to help outsiders do better than they would normally. He even received benefits from the party that helped him run his campaign.

Good lord, this is how we lose elections, spending days second-guessing ourselves because we worry what the neighbors will think. A lot of people still do not understand that the party primary system is not a democratic, representative election. It is part of the party’s candidate selection process, or a sort of marketing survey to see how well their candidates fare with the voting public.

But parties are private organizations and in the end can make up or even change their rules as they see fit.

Then I really recommend reading dangerman’s link, because that’s pretty explanatory about how much of a nontroversy this is to everybody outside of Bros and the media’s need for some form of blood sport at the DNC to maintain the “horse race” narrative. These emails were sent in April and May, most after NY had voted and pretty much ended any serious path for Sanders to the nomination. With three decades invested in the Republican Party, there is a powerful temptation to shrug and soldier on. Despite the bold rhetoric, we all know Trump will lose. Why throw away a great personal investment over one bad nominee? Trump is not merely a poor candidate, but an indictment of our character. Preserving a party is not a morally defensible goal if that party has lost its legitimacy.

Watching Ronald Reagan as a boy, I recall how bold it was for him to declare ‘morning again’ in America. In a country menaced by Communism and burdened by a struggling economy, the audacity of Reagan’s optimism inspired a generation.

Fast-forward to our present leadership and the nature of our dilemma is clear. I watched Paul Ryan speak at Donald Trump’s convention the way a young child watches his father march off to prison. Thousands of Republican figures that loathe Donald Trump, understand the danger he represents, and privately hope he loses, are publicly declaring their support for him. In Illinois our local and state GOP organizations, faced with a choice, have decided on complicity.

Our leaders’ compromise preserves their personal capital at our collective cost. Their refusal to dissent robs all Republicans of moral cover. Evasion and cowardice has prevailed over conscience. We are now, and shall indefinitely remain, the Party of Donald Trump.

I will not contribute my name, my work, or my character to an utterly indefensible cause. No sensible adult demands moral purity from a political party, but conscience is meaningless without constraints. A party willing to lend its collective capital to Donald Trump has entered a compromise beyond any credible threshold of legitimacy. There is no redemption in being one of the “good Nazis.”

I hereby resign my position as a York Township Republican committeeman. My thirty-year tenure as a Republican is over.

Let’s also not act as if just because people are supposed to be impartial, that they really are. While Bernie Sanders registered as a Democrat, he wasn’t one until just this past year. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton has been a loyal member to the party for decades, and wasn’t spending a large part of her time campaigning vilifying it to galvanize support. Clearly there were people who’ve worked with the party most of their lives who weren’t exactly thrilled that they had a Democratic candidate (sometimes unfairly) painting them as “the enemy” as part of his campaign’s strategy.

Exactly this. I said it the other day but the Sanders campaign treated the DNC like the enemy, they shouldn’t be shocked that animosity was returned.

Able Archer ‘83, if you will conflate the Soviet Union and communism.

A 1996 CIA report on the 1983 war scare concluded that the Soviets genuinely feared a pre-emptive nuclear strike from the United States. General Secretary Yuri Andropov “repeatedly compared” Reagan to Hitler, the architect of a devastating surprise attack on the Soviet Union that it barely survived, and told his Politburo colleagues that he was “fanning the flames of war,” an image, the report’s author notes dryly, “more sinister than Andropov as a Red Darth Vader.”

How many of the alleged emails have the “Received:” and “Message-ID:” headers intact?
The former field traces the route the email took from start to finish, and can be used to determine the authenticity of the emails. If it is missing, either the leaker does not want to show where he intercepted the emails, or that he has added bogus emails.
The latter is unique for each email, and usually unique for each piece of software which generates it, so can be used as another tool to determine authenticity. If it is missing, someone has added bogus emails.

There were no set of rules or options that would have given Bernie the win.

Every measure, from all caucus to all winner take all would not have changed fact that Hillary got millions more votes than Bernie did. And got more votes in the states with higher numbers of delegates (win where the delegates are).

Trump doesn’t care about any of this. He’s just shit stirring because he thinks this will create conflict at the convention.

He’s piggybacking on hopes that the leaks will create dissent and conflict on the floor.

Beyond the standard “looks bad” aspect to this story, there’s nothing really to it and the second-guessing isn’t really going to get us very far. One shit heel deserves to be fired immediately and DWS dropping out of the convention speaking circuit is no great loss. Aside from those, we’re left where we’ve found ourselves so many times in the past: Scrambling to please people who will never be pleased.

i have long since felt / sensed that it’s easier to register 5 or even 10 new democrats in less time and with less aggravation than to “convert” a hardliner (from either side)

re: #209 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

Unlike ISIS, the Soviet nuclear arsenal was an “existential threat” to the USA

At the time of the Cuban Missile crisis the Soviet Union’s nuclear arsenal was not capable of destroying the US. They had a limited number of delivery systems, mostly bombers that would have had to penetrate a sophisticated air defence system which would have seriously degraded the attack. An all-out war was still going to kill tens of millions of people in the US at the least but it would still have been in existence afterwards.

The Soviets were faced at the time with an overwhelming US nuclear capability including Thor and Jupiter short-range missiles in Italy and Turkey of a similar type to the ones the Soviets threatened to emplace in Cuba. They had requested the US government remove those missiles and when they refused only then did they move ahead with implementing their plans to put similar missiles in Cuba. At that point the US freaked out, scaring the shit out of the rest of us. Once things quietened down the US did in fact remove the Thor and Jupiter missiles as the Soviets requested had but by that time both sides were moving towards a strategic deterrent system using home-based intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched missiles and bombers as an afterthought.

Able Archer ‘83, if you will conflate the Soviet Union and communism.

A 1996 CIA report on the 1983 war scare concluded that the Soviets genuinely feared a pre-emptive nuclear strike from the United States. General Secretary Yuri Andropov “repeatedly compared” Reagan to Hitler, the architect of a devastating surprise attack on the Soviet Union that it barely survived, and told his Politburo colleagues that he was “fanning the flames of war,” an image, the report’s author notes dryly, “more sinister than Andropov as a Red Darth Vader.”

militaryhistorynow.com

That shows they were scared shitless about us. I see no communist menace…I see fear that would possibly lead to thermonuclear annihilation. Definitely not something we want but also not a communist menace (unless we’re willing to say there was a US menace which I highly doubt uncle Ronnie was willing to do).

The point of the CIA research was that they were far more dangerous when genuinely frightened than when just being expansionist. There is military folklore that this didn’t go hot only because a mid-ranking Soviet officer violated his orders.

I have difficulty believing his platform is any more progressive than was President Obama’s in 2008. Having to deal with congress (even a dem majority) impacts such a platform as Bernie should well understand after all his years in that place. The outburst against the ACA and the refusal of congress to pass even minor legislation related to gun ownership are examples of why all progressive ideas can only be incrementally implemented.

Perhaps these words are the best he can give for his followers and as long as he asks them all to vote for Hillary Clinton - not much more can be expected.

Absolutely. Anyhow, I think if Tardis’s idea were done, it would be a propaganda boon for Putin who no doubt would use it to his American Christian right sympathizers to spread the idea “Your church is next!”. No offense Tardis but I think you’re being short-sighted here. I have no idea how to hit Putin where it hurts hence why I’m here and not in the diplomatic corps but this isn’t the way.

He’s all charred up the moment. Speaking of Hitler, there was a hilarious German film I saw based on a book called “Guess Who’s Back” and the premise is Hitler waking up in present Germany with no idea the war is long over and he eventually becomes a sort of talk show circuit favorite.

awwwww!!

They look so in love.

It was pretty common seeing that sort of thing. I have 1 of a zebra with its baby looking so motherly. Shocking really. One afternoon I sat near a watering hole that elephants were very busy at. At times some of the bulls would get very pushy about who had the right to the A list spot. No matter how much pushing or shoving or noise making was happening if a little one came running up all the BS stopped. All the pushing and shoving stopped so the little ones would have first pick of what spot they wanted. Some would even back off and lets the moms get in with the kids.

I’m sure there are a lot of humans that could learn from what I saw on an average afternoon with a bunch of elephants getting a drink and cooling off.

And I feel differently that those people.

There were ten times as many elephants in Africa 100 years ago. Their population is now less than half a million. And hunting of course is one of the reasons.

African elephants are officially listed as “vulnerable.” One step above threatened, and certainly not thriving. This is the moral framework within which people make a decision whether or not to kill such an animal.

For some reason you think it’s important to shill for billionaires who like to kill vulnerable species. Maybe you just don’t give a shit. Now get back to polishing Roger Ailes’s boots.

If he can’t handle a debate with Clinton (who he paints as weak and incompetent), how can anyone take him seriously about his positions on any issue or in dealing with foreign rivals like China or Russia.

I have no doubt that Hillary wants to debate him. The formats have already been set - the second being a town hall style where no doubt the questions from a so called undecided audience will be about emails and Benghazi

1 & 3 - Cross Talk is there
The debate will be divided into six time segments of approximately 15 minutes each on major topics to be selected by the moderator and announced at least one week before the debate. The moderator will open each segment with a question, after which each candidate will have two minutes to respond. Candidates will then have an opportunity to respond to each other. The moderator will use the balance of the time in the segment for a deeper discussion of the topic.

Hedge-fund billionaire Robert Mercer and his daughter, Rebekah, issued a rare public statement, slamming Cruz, who suggested during his convention appearance that Republicans “vote their conscience.”

In a statement, the Mercers said:

Last summer and again this year, Senator Ted Cruz pledged to support the candidacy of the nominee of the Republican Party whomever that nominee might be. We are profoundly disappointed that on Wednesday night he chose to disregard this pledge.

The Democratic Party will soon choose as their nominee a candidate who would repeal both the First and Second Amendments of the Bill of Rights, a nominee who would remake the Supreme Court in her own image. We need “all hands on deck” to ensure that Mr. Trump prevails. Unfortunately, Senator Cruz has chosen to remain in his bunk below, a decision both regrettable and revealing.

These people are that stupid and they vote have billions.

I’d love it if the security briefs that the Trump campaign gets access to are riddled with telltale falsities. That way, even if we don’t ever hear about leaks to foreign governments in the press, the State Department can get a bead on the source.

Seems like just the honeypot someone like Manafort might fall into.

As well it should. The DNC would do well to get this shit out there and circulating. Trump’s connections to Russian oligarchs, who are either buddies with Putin or have his blessing, are a pretty undeniable reality. These Berniebots seem to be trying do what Corbyn is doing to Labour over in the UK.

Looking at the UK headlines, Corbyn appears to be going down in fire and wanting to take the whole lot with him.

The latest:

Indian-Origin UK MP Files Complaint Against Jeremy Corbyn’s Aide

An Indian-origin Labour MP has lodged a complaint with the UK House of Commons Speaker against her party leader Jeremy Corbyn’s aide for “unauthorised entry” into her parliamentary office and “intimidating” her staff.

Seema Malhotra, 43, who had resigned as shadow chief secretary to the Treasury along with a number of her party colleagues last month, has called on Speaker Jon Bercow to launch an official investigation into the incident.

The MP for Feltham and Heston has claimed people from the Opposition leader’s office used digital keys to open her office door.

This comes after the following from 2 days ago:

It could be because the obviously inept GOP just happened to pick right on their OpSec tools and protocols. Maybe they’ve been targeted by not successfully hacked. Maybe they’ve never been targets.

So, I just found this, about Queen Elizabeth II.

A connection from Muhammad,[10] entering the British line through Infanta Isabella of Castile (shown in the first chart), has been endorsed by Burke’s Peerage The connection hinges on Zaida of Seville, who, for this connection to be true, needs to be daughter, wife and mother, respectively, of King Al-Mu’tamid ibn Abbad of Seville, King Alfonso VI of León and Castile and Sancha Alfónsez (wife of Rodrigo González de Lara). This line goes through Maria of Portugal (shown under Byzantine connection above). Other lines of descent from Muhammad go through María de Padilla (shown under Byzantine connection above), Isabella of Barcelos (shown under Ancestry of Diana Spencer and Catherine Middleton above) and the wife of Anselm Franz, 2nd Prince of Thurn and Taxis (father-in-law of Charles Alexander, Duke of Württemberg, patrilineal ancestor of Mary of Teck).

Typically you need huge ideological differences between countries undergoing geopolitical tensions for it to rise to the level of a Cold War (think Capitalism vs Communism for the West vs. USSR + China or Pan-Arab Socialism vs Monarchism in the Middle East during the 50s). There isn’t that between the US and Russia, as Russia is basically what the US would be if the corporatists and the dominionists on the right teamed up and gained power.

It is something a lot of people are not aware of. Those Russians living in the other Soviet republics used to be a pampered minority, receiving preference in jobs, housing and education.

Now they are often discriminated against, and that breeds a lot of resentment and desire to come “heim ins Reich”

FWIW, he got into an argument with the woman and none of the articles I read mentioned him screaming “Allahu Akbar” or anything like that (◔_◔), nor is any motive yet known. Still, he’s Syrian so he’ll be a terrorist no matter what for some.

Speaking of terrorism, there’s a pretty good article at the NYT Times about labels:

Terrorist or Disturbed Loner? Munich Attack Reveals Shifting Labels

WASHINGTON — Munich’s police chief, Hubertus Andrä, the morning after a gunman killed nine people and then himself, offered two pieces of information that seemed at odds.

The massacre, he said, appeared likely to be “a shooting rampage” rather than an act of terrorism. But when asked about Anders Behring Breivik, the right-wing Norwegian terrorist who killed 77 people exactly five years earlier, Chief Andrä answered that “this connection is obvious.”

“We must assume that he was aware of this attack,” he said, referring to the Munich gunman, 18-year-old Ali Sonboly.

Information about Mr. Sonboly is still emerging. But regardless of what details surface, Mr. Andrä’s classification of the attack — as potentially inspired by a famous terrorist attack, yet not terrorism itself — reflects more than the increasingly blurry line between mass assailant and terrorist.

It also highlights that this line is often drawn differently depending on the attacker’s apparent ideology.

When mass killers show even minor hints of affinity for jihadist groups, as they did in recent attacks in Orlando, Fla., and Nice, France, their actions are swiftly judged to be terrorism. But when their source of inspiration appears to be right-wing extremism, as Mr. Andrä speculated could be the case in Munich, they are often treated as disturbed loners. […]

BTW, Hillary won by bigger margins than Obama in 2008. She won more votes. This wasn’t close. And I don’t want to hear that he was polling 8 in the beginning. Yeah, that’s because it was before the primary even started. Of course he’s going to go up in the polls. If that’s your high bar for your candidate, then that’s really sad.

Sorry, but this bull shit pisses me off. Bernie had every opportunity to beat Hillary. He had the money, he switched parties, he even had YUGE rallies.

HE LOST. He didn’t lose because of a DNC staffer suggested, in an email, to go after his religion. He lost because Hillary was the better candidate.

One close Clinton ally said the hope is that Wasserman Schultz would get the message and leave her position before the convention kicks off Monday. “But she is stubborn,” the Clinton ally said.

[…]

“She seems oblivious to the volcano that will erupt if she walked into that [convention] hall,” said a veteran Democratic operative, who added that as of Sunday morning, Wasserman Schultz believed the uproar would pass. “Forty percent of the people in that hall didn’t like her to begin with. She was going to get booed before all this.”

I had teachers who admitted that duck and cover wouldn’t do squat against a nuke, but was worth practicing anyway for earthquakes.

It depends are where you were. On the fringe of a target duck and cover would save some lives out of N.

Trop Storm Darby has been sort of a dud. Nice to get some rain though. Sunrise was dark pink/orange, pretty cool. Now it’s cool and grey.

This can mean only one thing. Coffee.

We were living in Hof, Germany when Kennedy was assassinated. Hof was the military base closest to Berlin (the last stop on the autobahn before you entered East Germany). From our back yard we would occasionally see lights and hear explosions/gunfire from the border fence in the distance, when a crossing/escape was attempted.

Kennedy’s assassination was one of the scariest events in my life. All the adults were terrified although they tried desperately to not let it show to us kids. If a war started, we were literally on the front line; Hof was directly in the path of any Warsaw pact attack. And there was nowhere to go.

(edit to fix typo)

Wife was an Army brat in Vilseck then. Much practicing of Non-combatant Evac and releasing of pets. They were supposed to find their way to Cherbourg. Easy-Peasy.

When you see the big bright flash, you begin counting, noting when the flash fades and then how long before the shockwave hits. This gives you the yield of the explosion as well as your distance to it.

Assuming, of corse, that you are still alive to work the calculator..
