90% of ‘Consistent’ Sanders Supporters Favor Clinton Over Trump

As the BernieOrBusters turn on their idol
Politics • Views: 38,763

So today, an audience of hard core Bernie Sanders supporters turned on Bernie when he said, “We have got to elect Hillary Clinton.”

YouTube

But a new Pew Research analysis shows that these dead-enders are very much a minority in the Democratic Party, because 90% of those who consistently supported Sanders in the primaries are now supporting Hillary Clinton against the Trumpenstein.

Hillary Clinton led Bernie Sanders for the Democratic nomination in every Pew Research Center survey conducted throughout the party’s primaries. But many Democratic voters vacillated in their candidate support throughout this period.

Today, however, overwhelming shares of all Democratic and Democratic-leaning registered voters – including 90% who consistently supported Sanders for the nomination – back Clinton in the general election against Donald Trump.

I’m trying not to be an asshole, but I feel somewhat vindicated for all those months of telling others that whatever “good” came from keeping Bernie in the race long after he was viable was going to be overshadowed by the negativity that he was invoking with his “I WAS ROBBED!” whining.

For months, we kept getting told by Bernie supporters (as opposed to Bros) that his staying through to the convention was a “good” thing because he could keep Hillary from making a mad scramble to the center while using yute voters as “leverage.” He was going to get to the convention, being the messiah to all these youngin’s, and hand them on a silver platter to the DNC to win the day.

But that’s not happening. While he managed to influence the party platform, we now see that all that talk about how he was going to be able to bring his supporters onboard was bunk because more had already made the switch months ago. All he’s brought is months worth of negativity and bitterness that is going to sour the rest of this election for the party. But I’m sure that Jill Stein is thanking him immensely.

Sanders needs to be told right to his face that his platform changes will be kicked into the long grass, the committee detailed in yesterday’s meetings will increase superdelegate weight, and that he will never be allowed into a Democratic caucus meeting again until he fucking fixes this.

My sarcastic answer is: because that shit only happens in the movies, not in real life.

My less sarcastic answer is: we, as a society, are a bunch of self-centered, stupid, assholes and thus are getting what we deserve.

My most honest answer is: because Newt Gingrich was right the other day on CNN (I caught this on Last Week Tonight) when he basically said that facts don’t matter in elections, it’s all about how people feel. Feelings, truthiness, bullshit mountain, they all beat reality and statistics. In other words, it’s objectively true but subjectively nonsense.

if you recognize the threat of trump and you’re saying he mustnt be elected you’ve got choices.

1. third party or no vote for president
2. clinton

If you’re reasonably sure he wont be elected anyway, then 1 is an unprincipled, disingenuous weasel vote. a symbol and a waste of time

if you’re *not* sure of the outcome then voting 1 is only 1/2 as powerful as you could be.

if you’re “afraid” to vote D and do all you can do with your vote, then it’s some kind of party/cause over country cowardice

Yes, she should have driven him out of the race as quickly as possible, and should have done whatever was necessary to do so. This minimum-effort glide path that she took has had terrible consequences.

If Democrats emulated Republicans, Bernie would be their nominee. That wouldn’t make you very happy.

If Democrats emulated Republicans, Bernie never would have run. He’d have been informed that it would not be in his best interest, and shown a few previews of the attacks that would have been leveled against him.

You mean the party that’s won damn near every political contest in this country in the last six years? Democrats need to start emulating successful strategies.

And yes, it’s about dominance. Hillary refused to exert her strength for the last four months, because she wanted to save Bernie’s face. This is her reward. I’m not sure it’s salvageable now.

Successful political strategy: lying through your teeth to play up the most banal, most basic tribal fears of your constituency, running a campaign completely at odds with reality, not even paying lip service to facts.

Shall we do that, too?

The lying strategy only worked in getting their scared supporters out. That kind of crap isn’t going to work on a majority of Democrats because a lot of those scare tactics don’t stand up to the things that blacks, Latinos, and women actually face, though there are plenty of Democrats that might be influenced.

As I stated above, the best strategy the Republicans use is enthusiastically voting for the nominee, especially in elections that Democrats don’t turn out for.

If Democrats emulated Republicans, Bernie never would have run. He’d have been informed that it would not be in his best interest, and shown a few previews of the attacks that would have been leveled against him.

This has been a very strange cycle. The Republican primary had more candidates than any that I remember. The Democratic primary field was incredibly small for an open race. If you look at the Democratic primary in 2004 or 2008, Sanders fits in somewhat comparable to Kucinich. Kucinich didn’t get much support because there were several more plausible candidates in those primaries. The GOP ran into the opposite problem - the field was so big, it was impossible for a group of frontrunners to emerge. Typically the GOP primary has 1-3 frontrunners and a bunch of also rans (either movement conservative types trying to pull the party ever so slightly to the right, or younger candidates getting in a test run since the GOP nominee is rarely someone running for the first time). But with approximately 87,000 candidates, and everyone having to be taken seriously, Trump was able to swoop in, and run his angle.

Let me see if I can explain it this way:
Every year in Happy Gumdrop Fairy-Tale Land all of the sprites and elves and woodland creatures gather together to pick the Rainbow Sunshine Queen. Everyone is there: the Lollipop Guild, the Star-Twinkle Toddlers, the Sparkly Unicorns, the Cookie Baking Apple-cheeked Grandmothers, the Fluffy Bunny Bund, the Rumbly-Tumbly Pupperoos, the Snowflake Princesses, the Baby Duckies All-In-A-Row, the Laughing Babies, and the Dykes on Bikes. They have a big picnic with cupcakes and gumdrops and pudding pops, stopping only to cast their votes by throwing Magic Wishing Rocks into the Well of Laughter, Comity, and Good Intentions. Afterward they spend the rest of the night dancing and singing and waving glow sticks until dawn when they tumble sleepy-eyed into beds made of the purest and whitest goose down where they dream of angels and clouds of spun sugar.

Bill and Opus for 2016!  Jul 25, 2016 • 12:03:41pm

The great unanswered (and so far, unasked by major media) question behind all of this is whether the Donald Trump campaign had any prior knowledge of the planned hack of the DNC emails, and if so, what level of complicity he provided. If he knew, and as a result, was somehow involved in the silencing of Sheremet - who would appear to have had some major dirt on Manafort - I shudder to think what he would attempt on the domestic front.
Personally, I don’t think that the RNC itself would be involved in something like this, because there are still people within the party structure who well remember how badly the Watergate break-in (and subsequent coverup) damaged them - and it isn’t a stretch at all to label this as a modern-day version of that infamous event.

Looks nice. I’m staying at a small family-run hotel in the center, and the price ain’t bad considering it’s high tourist season: $57 for three nights, and breakfast included.

Quite frankly, I would have trouble identifying with a party whose internal machinations had their foundation in a culture of reprisal and vindictiveness.

God knows I’d still vote for the eventual candidate such a Democratic Party produced, but the lever would be pulled with nose firmly held.

How about instead of “this is the world we live in” lukewarm bullshit, you say “Hillary is the most qualified candidate and she won this nomination fair and square and that’s why you should vote for her.”

Yeah the shouty Bernie needs to scream it from the rooftops. But apparently he won’t. Just like he tweeted throughout the RNConvention against Trump but never even fucking mentioned Hllary’s name. I’ve said from day one, Bernie is long on pointing out problems, short on solutions, and just likes to yell in indignation rather than support. Sigh.

I can’t decide if doing opposition research on Trump would be the easiest assignment or the most difficult assignment in a campaign. Basically, in the file entitled “things Trump has said we can use against him” it would just be a slip of paper saying “all of the things he’s ever said.” But then having to actually curate those statements and produce them in a way that can actually be used? That’s Shining territory of All Work and No Play…

re: #176 Bill and Opus for 2016!

I think it’s much worse than that. If it can be definitively proven that Trump or Manafort had knowledge of Russian intervention in the election, and then subsequently pushed to change the GOP policy vis a vis Russia and Ukraine, I think that would fit the constitutional definition of treason: adhering to and giving aid and comfort to our enemies.

Lots of choice stuff to work through.

Or that Russia has national health care, which is socialized health care.

Or this one about Snowden (whose actions continue to remain suspect):

Science policy wonks being all wonky (and perhaps of no use):

Lessons from Brexit

[…]

The campaign that resulted in Britain voting to leave the EU was a populist appeal to the basest instincts of the economically, socially and culturally disenfranchised, fuelled by misinformation and a dismissal of any sincere debate of the potentially cataclysmic consequences. It follows the rise of populist parties using similar tactics in the 2014 European parliamentary election, and the unstoppable appeal of Donald Trump. We need to improve our understanding of these convulsions.

The Debate Over Time’s Place in the Universe

[…]

Ismael’s presentation drew a mixed response. Carroll said he agreed with everything she had said; Elitzur said he “wanted to scream” during her talk. (He later clarified: “If I bang my head against the wall, it’s because I hate the future.”) An objection voiced many times during the conference was that the block universe seems to imply, in some important way, that the future already exists, yet statements about, say, next Thursday’s weather are neither true nor false. For some, this seems like an insurmountable problem with the block-universe view. Ismael had heard these objections many times before. Future events exist, she said, they just don’t exist now. “The block universe is not a changing picture,” she said.”It’s a picture of change.” Things happen when they happen. “This is a moment—and I know everybody here is going to hate this—but physics could do with some philosophy,” she said. “There’s a long history of discussion about the truth-values of future contingent statements—and it really has nothing to do with the experience of time.” And for those who wanted to read more? “I recommend Aristotle,” she said.

To repeat myself - Democracy is an experiment (without any real control set, btw.)

The ground rules of American democracy have been changing ever since 1776.

Whatever the BerningBots may think they are doing, the bottom line is that they are just reacting to events they don’t like.

Human preferences are funny things - transient, ephemeral urges that, among other things, are subject to chemical influences.

Many sci-fi creations are set in a future where democracy has been replaced by a techno-corporatist governance where an isolated oligarchy controls the mindless masses. This strikes me as a bit of a projection into the future of a past Chinese bureaucratic state.

And it may indeed be our future.

Today’s news in human evolution:

Genomic analysis of Andamanese provides insights into ancient human migration into Asia and adaptation

To shed light on the peopling of South Asia and the origins of the morphological adaptations found there, we analyzed whole-genome sequences from 10 Andamanese individuals and compared them with sequences for 60 individuals from mainland Indian populations with different ethnic histories and with publicly available data from other populations. We show that all Asian and Pacific populations share a single origin and expansion out of Africa, contradicting an earlier proposal of two independent waves of migration1, 2, 3, 4. We also show that populations from South and Southeast Asia harbor a small proportion of ancestry from an unknown extinct hominin, and this ancestry is absent from Europeans and East Asians. The footprints of adaptive selection in the genomes of the Andamanese show that the characteristic distinctive phenotypes of this population (including very short stature) do not reflect an ancient African origin but instead result from strong natural selection on genes related to human body size.

Two discoveries in one parcel: 1) yet another admixture event, and 2) island dwarfism.

Exactly, they have to be reluctant slaveowners if we mention they owned slaves at all. I actually when I worked for the history magazine helped do preliminary research on a story regarding Jefferson and slavery. IT was right around the time Barton was pushing his bs about Jefferson being a devout Christian and it just angered the hell out of me the way Jefferson, a man who very likely did have relations with one of his slaves and did NOT free them in any circumstance (as opposed to Washington who did free his after Martha’s death) made out to be someone who hated slavery. Slavery was very profitable to these guys. That’s why the slaveowners were willing to wage a civil war to protect the ability to own slaves.

“Revolving Door” was less overtly racist than the Horton ad, but a number of polls found that it was the most influential ad of the campaign and that racial fears were invoked.

I somewhat subscribe to that but I do understand why they didn’t like the British parliament imposing their taxes. Now that said, it’s nowhere near as glamarous as people make it out to be. And from what I remember from my class on the revolution, they still saw themselves as loyal British subjects well into the 1770’s. The American revolution no doubt is an important world event but it wasn’t a radical change like the French one was later. King George III also was far from the absolute monarch he’s made out to be. British monarchs ceased to be absolute monarchs long before King George III became king.

The Debate Over Time’s Place in the Universe

Here’s my thoughts; just being a lawyer they are probably nonsense. Like a quantum particle, the future has a huge range of possibilities until we observe it, snapping it into place. The arrow of time doesn’t run backwards because the odds are vastly against the future repeating the past instead of following one of the many more numerous possible futures. There are vastly more ways for a teacup to be broken rather than the one way of it being whole, so we don’t observe broken teacups becoming whole again.

Oh bull. Hillary knew if she rattled Bernie’s cage too much it would most likely be even more out of control than it is.

Furthermore, when idiots today claim no taxation without represetnation, it drives me crazy because unless you’re in Washington D.C (which by the way most conservatives don’t think should get representation in Congress anyhow), you do have state and federal legislators who do vote on your taxes. You may NOT like how they vote but you do have representation. A totally different thing from what we had in the colonial era. You may not like that Washington is far away from your home but the fact is we chose to expand and be a large country so that’s what that is.

There are vastly more ways for a teacup to be broken rather than the one way of it being whole, so we don’t observe broken teacups becoming whole again.

Yes, that is true. But then we need to ask the question (as noted in the Atlantic article) - why are there any still unbroken teacups?

If broken-teacups is the final state of the universe, we need to explain why there are still unbroken teacups.

re: #322 HappyWarrior

I somewhat subscribe to that but I do understand why they didn’t like the British parliament imposing their taxes. Now that said, it’s nowhere near as glamarous as people make it out to be. And from what I remember from my class on the revolution, they still saw themselves as loyal British subjects well into the 1770’s. The American revolution no doubt is an important world event but it wasn’t a radical change like the French one was later. King George III also was far from the absolute monarch he’s made out to be. British monarchs ceased to be absolute monarchs long before King George III became king.

There were a lot of issues. What they opposed wasn’t so much taxation as taxation without representation. The colonies had no voice in parliament and as a result were getting shit on (in a lot of ways, it’s similar to what’s been happening to Puerto Rico recently). And there was some concern in the southern colonies that parliament might outlaw slavery in the Empire.

I am glad he’s trying but I just can’t help but to be upset thinking that he made this so much worse by refusing to bow out earlier or at least to transition to a tone that was more anti-Trump and GOP earlier. He did give these people the impression that they were actually winning and that the DNC was stealing it from them.

We can only dream they waste money on such frivolities.

Elections on won on images and feelings.

Disruption during a prayer is one of those things that constitutes a condensed symbol of everything conservatives hate about progressives and that moderates find suspicious and unseemly about progressives. It is exactly the sort of thing that strategists look for to summarize: There! You see that? THAT IS WHAT YOU HATE! THEY ARE NOT LIKE YOU! THEIR CANDIDATE IS NOT LIKE YOU AND SPITS ON YOUR VALUES!

To be honest Charles, that’s an understatement. They’re more than irrational, they’re completely bonkers, they have created an alternate reality where because Bernie polled against Trump and the GOP candidates better that it meant he deserved ot be the nominee the results of the actual primaries be damned.

You think “power” and “putting her foot down,” i.e., assertiveness, are “Republican-speak”? Geez, no wonder we lose so many elections.

We lose elections because more of the voters who turn out in off-cycle elections support the other guy, not because Hillary Clinton steadfastly refuses to utter the phrase Radical Bernslamic Terror.

Bernie has become a cult of personality and I do blame him for that when he presents a narrative of him being the only real progressive out there. By doing that, he causes people like Barney Frank, John Lewis, and others who have actually much more progressive records and actually have gotten shit passed than Bernie to be seen as traitors and worthy of boos.

“This isn’t a fucking game. Supreme Court seats and the rights of a lot of immigrants, refugees, and even citizens who happen to not be old white men are on the line here. We’ve put US citizens in concentration camps before for looking like the ‘bad guys’.”
“But… I can’t vote for $hillary. She took money from Illuminati Jew Bankers, err I mean Goldman Sachs.”
“Really… are you fucking kidding me. You are going to put a Quasi-hitler in charge because of that? I told you this isn’t a fucking game.”
“But I can’t vote for her. Because emails/Benghazi/Vincent Foster…”
“You realize Mr/Ms Progressive, that you are quoting bullshit right wing/Fox News/Infowars talking points?”
“But but… I can’t vote for her. That’s not my favorite way, though! That only meets 99% of my criteria!” (thank to Louis CK for that line btw).
“OK THEN STAY THE FUCK HOME ON ELECTION DAY AND MAKE ROOM FOR THE ADULTS!”

“Maybe I’ll vote for Gary Johnson.”

No, it should be something blunter. “I lied to you. I never had the support for a ‘revolution,’ and it would not have been a good idea anyway. And I lied to you when I said we had a chance to win after March, when Secretary Clinton’s lead became insurmountable.

Your riotous and proto-violent behavior is unacceptable, and I want nothing to do with it. I realize that I have done wrong in promoting it, and I will do what I can to stop it. I am therefore releasing my delegates and do not want my name placed in nomination. I am leaving, and I am resigning my Senate seat. I am finished with politics. The revolution, if there ever was one, is over. Good night.”

Some of us have talked about how younger, or the recently tuned in, don’t know how the Clintons were treated in the 90s, and so they don’t know how these “scandals” are being rehashed. Another thing these people don’t really know is a world before the Tea Party. Once upon a time, there were a few serious activists inside Wikileaks, doing responsible things like redacting info that would endanger people, and working with ethical activists and journalists to sort out the data BEFORE publishing it.

Those activists are gone I guess - probably in disgust. Now Wikileaks is just the Assange cult, doing Putin’s bidding. And just dumping data without any vetting.

It’s okay to say out loud that there are problems with the election system. Bernie will be remembered for running an amazingly clean campaign when he was surrounded by mud on all sides to an unprecedented degree (because of Citizens United, which will be overturned). His ability to run on the issues, and more importantly, to get people talking about them, is what makes him a great politician — who’s not going away. I don’t see why Mr. Charles or the rest of you need to crow so gleefully that he won’t be president. He doesn’t care. It was never about just November. Charles is usually right, but equating stubborn Sanders supporters with stubborn Drumpf supporters is, excuse me, laughable.

This morning in My Friend BoB:

* Clinton got a Convention Dip instead of a Convention Bump (because comparing the first day of one party’s convention to the end of another party’s convention makes total sense)
* Based on those polls, Trump will win the election—and it’s all the DNC’s fault (because since the DNC didn’t give Bernie dead-enders what they wanted, they’re going to vote for the OTHER guy…who also won’t give them what they wanted?)

NOTE: I don’t know if my friend actually plans to vote for Trump, but he is sure not going to vote for Hillary.

This is true, about the screaming… the Tea Party is one big tantrum, and these kids are the push-back. Except the texting generation with no manners is also the instant-viral-video, everyone’s-a-reporter generation. They’re impatient. Forgive them, for they have not automatic weapons. They’re not like Drumpf’s core; also, Bernie discourages them. They’ll get over it.
