What’s going to be interesting is when Saturday/Sunday’s system moves in here and the snow level rises to at least 9000’ while dumping over a foot of rain on that.

I’m driving up in the morning. Patrolling Saturday and Sunday. Avy danger is super high…and the storm coming in this weekend is a warm one, so it’ll soak all of this snow down and create a base that will be serving up good corn well into April.
But yeah, it’s fuckin’ deadly right now. That’s the size of a crown that killed one of our guys a few years ago.

I’ve been on hut trips, they are pretty exhilarating. My first hut trip was the Hinsdale Haute Route outside Lake City, CO in 2009. I’ll never forget it. I had to take a leak in the middle of the night and when I went outside I just stood there for a minute or two. It was a full moon and yet I could see lots and lots of stars and constellations, as we were many many miles away from the nearest streetlight. It’s a scene I’ll never forget.
Oh, and every run was bottomless powder.
The preparation for such trips is extensive and sometimes frustrating. A lot of times you have to apply weeks in advance for the huts.
I still want to ski from Telluride to Ouray. My sister and her husband have done that trip a couple of times and they say it’s as close as you can get to being one with the mountains and snow.
Here’s a picture of me outside a hut on the Hinsdale Haute Route:

Is it me or is Jacob’s voice changing?
I think Jacob usually sings falsetto for the lead parts in his overdubs, and his regular voice for the supporting harmonies. He’s 18 or so, so his voice changed a while back, I reckon. So, we’re hearing his normal baritone-tenor range. Either way, he’s got a fine set of pipes. I was reminded of George Benson’s vocals on that same song.

It has been a long time since I went and picked out an album or CD to put it on and listen actively.
Closest I come is when I am playing Scrabble with my girlfriend (we do a lot of that, actually, she can beat me nearly half the time) and she hands me her iPhone and asks me to find something on Spotify.

That’s because the Democrats enacted their plan.
Rebrand it GOPCare, call it good.
More:
“I don’t think we can just repeal Obamacare and say we’re going to get the answer two years from now,” Cotton explained. “Look, this is a very complicated problem. Health care is a very complex issue. We haven’t coalesced around a solution for six years, in part because it is so complicated. Kicking the can down the road for a year or two years is not going to make it any easier to solve.”
Just hours before, Ohio Gov. John Kasich issued a similarly stark warning while speaking to reporters.
“There’s room for improvement,” the Republican governor said, according to an account in The Hill, “but to repeal and not to replace, I just want to know what’s going to happen to all those people who find themselves left out in the cold.”
Also raising concerns about a quick repeal vote were Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and John McCain of Arizona, although both stopped short of declaring that repeal and replacement should take place simultaneously.

Nothin’ to worry about. ACA will still be painted as a Democratic failure. If it were not, why would so many Americans want to get rid of it?
And if the economy tanks, it will be the Democrats’ fault for their failed economic policies that are finally catching up with us.
If gas prices rise: Obama’s fault for not drilling more domestically and building more pipelines.

Climate science is hard.
Most people prefer simple answers as opposed to difficult decisions, and that makes it a lot easier for those with a vested interest in opposing scientists to make their case.
“There can’t be climate change, it’s -18F (-28C) and it snowed for two days” is a lot easier than the reasons why that might be so. (Also, -18 is way below average for this area.)
That works for just about any sort of science denial: See evolution versus the Bible. “Evolution can’t be true because Genesis says God created the world in six days,” or “Climate change can’t be caused by humans because Revelation says God will destroy the world, not mankind.”
And a lot of complex science is somewhat counter-intuitive.
I have seen the argument that the ice sheets around Antarctica are spreading.
Yes, because of warming, the continental glaciers are melting into the sea, lowering the salinity of the seawater around the ice shelves and raising its freezing temperature.

More fake news about the VA (this time perpetrated by the New York Times);
The takeaway part of this;
Donald Trump met with the heads of several monopolistic private health care corporations in Palm Beach on Wednesday. Bloomberg reports that “A person close to Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter said he also participated.” Trump was soliciting their advice on whether he should force the Veterans Health Administration (VA) to outsource more of the care of our nation’s veterans to monopolistic health care corporations. The comic book executive at least had no apparent conflicts of interests.
America’s major veterans groups, including the American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America, and Paralyzed Veterans of America, which all strenuously oppose any moves to privatize the VA, were not invited. Stay tuned for the rest of the story.
But meanwhile, let’s just dwell for a second on how we got here before it’s too late. In the New York Times’ story about the meeting, reporter Michael D. Shear offered this background: “The Department of Veterans Affairs has struggled to provide timely care to many veterans….News reports in 2014 said that dozens of veterans had died while waiting for care at a V.A. hospital in Phoenix.”
Here we have the New York Times once again mindlessly repeating a devastatingly effective piece of fake news that may yet lead to the dismantling of the VA. It was put in motion by the Republican-controlled House Veterans Affairs Committee during hearings it staged over the summer of 2014. The committee’s chairman, Rep. Jeff Miller, claimed to have uncovered as many as 40 veterans who had died while waiting for care at the Phoenix VA, a claim that was endlessly repeated in the press and that did enormous damage to the image of the VA with the American people.
Yet, as we reported last Spring, this statistic has no more meaning than saying that dozens of people die every day while waiting for an appointment to see their tax accountant or lawyer. Subsequent investigation (pdf) found that six, not forty, patients had experienced “clinically significant delays,” and in not a single case was there evidence that these patients died as a result. Veterans listed on waiting lists usually turned out be waiting for a routine visit with a primary care doc or were already under the care of a VA specialist.
More at the Washington Monthly digging deeper into the information, including the results of a RAND Corporation study. (Hint, the VA continues to be the best large-scale medical operation in the USA)

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. My subscribed news services are running at 100% Trump/GOP tax schemes, including the annual effort to abolish the IRS and implement the Fair Tax.
Oh look, the annual running of the stupids. Idiot GOP Rep. Moran (R-KS) introduced “Fair Tax” bill abolishing fed taxes, IRS.
— lawhawk (@lawhawk) January 6, 2017
That’s probably the least likely plan to have a chance of getting implemented, but that’s not saying much.
Estate tax planners are warning clients that they basically have no clue what will happen, and even if the federal estate tax is abolished, there’s no word on what happens at the state level since many states have a piggyback/sponge tax that directly refers to the federal estate tax. If the feds abolish the estate tax (a giveaway to the rich, and shifts revenue burdens to everyone else, or results in service cuts to everyone but the rich), states that don’t decouple from the federal repeal would find themselves repealing their own estate tax. Many states aren’t in great fiscal shape to take that kind of hit, so they’ll change things.
Then there are the corporations who don’t know what the hell Trump is talking about with the taxes at the border nonsense, but are “building it where they are selling it” as though that means anything other than the usual opportunism. The same companies that would build factories overseas because it’s cheaper also know that it can be cheaper to build them here in the US depending on other factors (like transportation costs, time to market, etc.) But with Trump savaging companies on Twitter for the hell of it, companies may preemptively try to duck and cover - even as they continue offshoring business or engage in other tax tactics that reduce their US tax obligations.

Demographics, how do they work. Baby boomers are retiring from workforce, as they approach retirement age. This is easily computed with actuarial tables, which are widely available.
The workforce participation rate will continue to dip as more and more people retire, which is actually a sign of a strong economy - because those retiring are more secure in their retirement, rather than hanging on for years past the official retirement age because they can’t afford to retire.

Well, I was a bit of a Glenn Greenwald acolyte back in the day so I was inclined to think favorably of them. But my judgment of them, and others, has changed in the past few years. Can I just say this though? I never thought too highly of Wikileaks. I took a couple classes on International Relations as an undergrad and my mom is a retired DOD official. I feel I always understood better than most people my age and on the left why countries need to be able to have secrets. Even before Assenge was revealed to be a bit of a creep, I just could never see him as a folk hero who was doing what he was doing for the public good.
What pisses me off about the whole Wikileaks, Russian hack thing is the continued crying by everyone about the damn DNC and Clinton emails.
Does anyone think for one little second that if we had access to RNC, Trump’s, Sander’s, Cruz’s, Kasich’s, Carly’s, Jeb’s…etc. campaign staff emails there would be all kinds of stuff there that would have pissed off the other side and their supporters?
It’s all Hillary bad…Wasserman-Schultz bad. Same as it ever was.
My gawd…it is freaking politics.
This past election was unprecedented for clueless stupidity by a lot of people.
And everyone forgot the first DNC glitch was Bernie’s people using data from the Clinton campaign they should not have had access.
Oh the outrage!!!

Texas: Zero days without an international embarrassment.
Texas’s proposed bathroom bill (that also strips power from local governments) is now international news. Great job, conservatives, laser-like focus on jobs any day now… .
Late to the party on this, but you mentioned Texas so my ears perked up.
Husband and i were talking about this last night. I said it won’t pass at the state level.
“Why not? They’re freaks.”
“Because above all, Texas government is about a healthy bidness climate (ht: Molly Ivins). This bill will hurt business in Texas. My own very large company will throw an absolute fit over it. And when it comes down to business vs. any other interest, including the right-wing religious trolls, business is going to win every time. Period.”
That’s the best way to understand Texas…this is a state that always will put corporations and business interests first. Deregulation, low taxes, incentives, it’s all about attracting and keeping businesses and the money flowing. No matter how crazy the rural Conservative nuts get, they will be ignored when it means their agenda impacts the happiness of our corporations.
There is a reason Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio are in the top 10 cities for size in the U.S. Corporations, headquarters, and the jobs they produce are there.
Remember, this is the place where a guy tried to introduce legislation to control high school cheerleader outfits and routines because he felt they were too suggestive. We also have laws about the ownership of dildos. Because Texas Legislature.
I asked Husband when the legislative session ends in Texas, because it will get NUTS and embarrassing over here. We will so thoroughly embarrass ourselves. “Not sure.” “Well, i need to find out because i can’t take the Texas Legislature in session on top of the rest of this country’s crazy. Just get the padded cell ready.”

The GOP is intent on holding as many hearings in as short a period of time to not only blunt the criticism from each individual pick, but to overwhelm the Democrats trying to challenge the picks on objective reality grounds - their abject lack of qualifications for the position, the conflicts of interest, or intent to dismember the very entities they’re looking to run, and all the protections provided by them (as with the EPA, Interior Dept., etc.)

Yep. Ever hear the story of the guy whose would be brother in law came at him with a gun and shot some tree near him and how when he was chopping down that tree years later, the bullet became unlodged and killed him? I remember talking with my cousin who lives in the UK when she visited in March. She was telling me that the world would lose a lot of respect for the U.S. if it was even close between Trump and the Dem nominee let alone if he won. Sigh. I am proud of her though. She’s shown a welcoming attitude towards the refugees they’ve gotten in the UK through both her words and actions.

Now to be fair, the guy’s bill went down in flames and ridicule, so we at least have our priorities straight when it comes to our cheerleaders.
I may out myself a bit with this….but that’s ok.
Do you remember a few years ago in Texas we had a scandal where a woman tried to hire a hitman to off the mother of a girl that made cheerleader instead of her daughter? “Texas Cheerleader Murder Plot.” They made a movie out of it with Holly Hunter. Link
The woman that was the target of the murder plot, Verna Heath, is my aunt by marriage. My family was in the thick of the most insane Texas cultural idiocy….cheerleading and football.
It’s obviously died down, but i still occasionally hear my husband yell from the other room, “Honey! Your crazy family is on T.V. again!” They still run specials and documentaries about it.

Instead he’s full-throttle denying its Russia, blaming US IC, the Democratic Party for being hacked, the media for talking about it, etc.
This would be a great opportunity for Trump to actually stand up for America, as he claims he wants to do. But he isn’t, and he won’t.
You know what, I don’t care that Podesta had a weak password. That guy who hacked into Sarah Palin’s email account was still punished. And yes Clinton should have done a better job campaigning but the Russian influence was so much more than just the hacking of emails, it was also spreading misinformation (fake news) and if people don’t think that tipped the scales in some way, they’re delusional.

re: #296 Sir John Barron
This would be a great opportunity for Trump to actually stand up for America, as he claims he wants to do. But he isn’t, and he won’t.
We’re trying to ascribe normal, sane motives to Trump. If we’re going to survive his new hobby of pretending he’s King of America, we have to stop that.
Trump is a narcissist. Really. All he cares about is attention, positive and negative, and himself. His family to the degree he feels they are extensions of him and make him look good. And business associates that he can con for money. That’s it.
Everything he does is for attention. He wants the fights. It feeds his supply. He wants the protests against him, it’s attention. He wants the rants against him. And he must, must make sure his ego and authority are not challenged, that he is “respected.” You see that all over everything he says, “respect.”
This latest issue is because he thinks the intelligence community disrespected him by going to the press. Ego hit.
The best thing to do is cut him off and ignore his tweets and hyperbole. Don’t let it throw you into fear or despair or paranoia because it’s smoke and mirrors. It’s designed to throw you into fear. He hasn’t actually done anything and no one knows what he will do. So we’re going to have to be living one issue, one day, at a time during this mess, and responding as each thing actually happens.
Otherwise he’ll fuck with your head because he knows it gets him attention. And when we spread these tweets and react to them we’re getting him more attention.
Is it hard to look away? Yes. He’s an entertainer, he knows what he’s doing and how to create a car wreck you can’t look away from. But he also knows how to write a script of lies so you’ll pay attention for ratings.
It goes against everything in me to ignore his tweets but i’ve forbidden it to be discussed in my house. We will talk about reality, not this funhouse he is creating.
The good thing about narcissists is they tend to always overreach because they underestimate the intelligence of others. They think they’re smarter than everyone else so they can get away with breaking rules and no one will catch on. That’s why we have to fight him via Congress as best we can. We have to push Congress on things like Russian hacking and his business dealings. That’s the rift that has to be created, Trump and Congress.
The Democrats in Congress understand this. They will play both sides to turn house Republicans and Trump against each other. When there are rifts they will choose sides and switch between them to make sure that Trump and Congress never completely align with each other.
This is long but it’s important. Trump is wired differently than many of us can comprehend. He has to be managed differently. We have to react to him differently. We have to remember what his real priorities will always be and they have nothing to do with this country. Nothing.

re: #287 Backwoods_Sleuth
What pretty much defines not just Trumpism, but the precursor substrate in which it emerged, is that there’s no line between the personal and the political, let alone such a fine distinction as “this is necessary for national security.” I mean, there’s a tendency to jump to narcissism as a diagnosis, a pathology, but—lots of people learn the old-fashioned way that only they matter. Like I keep saying, if you’re vain or arrogant enough, then you don’t struggle with the gulf between cynicism and idealism. Same side, different coin: if you’re vain or arrogant enough, then “the nation,” and “my personal bullshit” are not separate baskets.

re: #310 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
Who was it that said that nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the US public?
This man just achieved the highest office in the land by breaking every rule of sane and intelligent politics.
Correct. Because he understands what people wanted to hear to get him elected and has no compunction about lying. it’s not even a blip on his moral radar.
It’s also much bigger than Trump. It’s human tribalism kicking into gear by the belief that immigration is causing us to lose our geographic territory, common rituals and symbols, and protection as a group. it’s as primitive an impulse as it gets. That’s where the whole extreme vetting comes in….”We’ll let in the people that are the most like us that we think will assimilate.” The walls he pushes are to create defined geographic territory.
It’s not an issue in the cities because we already live in melting pots here. We already know globalism and multiculturalism is not a threat because we see it all around us. But rural areas have already decided to live in a specific culture….or they’d have moved to cities because rural areas are often poor. And that tribalism is often all they have left.
Now, throw in “wealthy white culture” as a factor. Keeping that top niche. Those people are country club Republicans that formed an alliance with Trump because they thought he’d push their fiscal agenda….lower taxes, deregulation, etc. People wonder why white women voted for Trump? Culture and tribe first, always.
Trump tapped into that very primitive response easily. The lizard brain part of humans, the lowest level on Maslow’s hierarchy. That’s why he won.
Ron Paul and Kasich each get an EC from TExas.
re: #350 Pawn of the Oppressor
67 or later, exact year uncertain. Cream cover, blue inside paper with a late 60’s/early-70’s illustrated logo pattern. My housemate has an earlier edition with a checkered cover. I’m not sure now if my ex & I cooked the rolls entirely from JOC, or used an Emeril or Alton recipe, but for sure I picked up the cardamom tip from there. The result was astonishing and now all conventional cinnamon rolls seem weak and sad in comparison.
My older one still has squirrel-skinning in it. The cover is blue, we won’t talk about the color of the pages.
I put cardamom in my oatmeal. I got it for aebleskivers.

@NPR It might just be his well-documented narcissism, rather than being Putin’s puppet, but either option is disastrous.

Go away Jenna, we don’t want you. Take Ivanka with you.
You’ll love this exchange from “Grace and Frankie.” During a visit to Frankie’s house (Frankie is Jewish), a visitor, who has brought a Jesus statue as a gift asks:
So what kind of Christians are you?
Frankie answers:
The Jewish kind.
Lady responds:
Oh, the originals.
We are thinking of making an online database with all “verified” twitter accounts & their family/job/financial/housing relationships.

First the suggestion that Obama should have shared secret data with them before Congress, now this. Wikileaks is presuming more and more authority and Assange is acting just like an elected leader to whom others are answerable.
I like that Wikileaks is now using “anonymous” as a pejorative.
So when do our intel peeps feed Trump total bullshit to see what makes it to the Russians? Soon, I hope.
