I hope the GOP is smart enough to realize what bad politics it will be in an election year for stories of young Americans losing their jobs, educations and even being discharged from the military then deported to countries foreign to them coming out month after month. Their white nationalist base will be furious with them if they enact DACA into law, however.

They explain to their base that the Demon-crats are holding them up, and they’ll get right on that after the next election.
That might work, if their base can be convinced they’ll get what they want (ethnic cleansing) by waiting until after November.

The Media is Not Finished with Their Dangerous, Sexist Libel of Hillary Clinton (Goes to The People’s View, more at the link):
But, they say, Clinton fails to grasp that Sanders was running a cause while she was running a campaign. They say setting deliverable, pragmatic goals building on the progress of the previous eight years was her shortcoming, while promising everyone a pony was Bernie’s brilliance. They portray Clinton’s view of Bernie Sanders’ damage - at least what can be gleaned from public excerpts of her book - as a simplistic facade.
This is a lie. This is libel. And this is sexist.
… and …
And someone please, please, please explain to me how “stop talking about race because that’s uncomfortable for the ‘white working class’ ” is “a fundamentally different view of politics.” This view of politics has been dominating American elections since 1788.

Yup. But a large number of average conservative voters call liberals (or anyone to the left of Attila the Hun) “sheeple,” brainwashed, anti-American, &c.
Fifty years of propaganda is a helluva drug.
The Republican Party used to stand for things (well, before my time but still) such as scientific endeavour, research, even (gasp) unions. Sometime around Barry Goldwater’s run for President it suddenly became acceptable to court ideas floated from groups like the John Birch Society … Ronald Reagan accelerated their craziness by welcoming in the Dixiecrats, social conservatives, and evangelical wingnuts.
At one time the Republicans and the Democrats stood for different ideas on how to move the country forward, but both agreed that the other at least argued their cases in good faith.
Not any more. One side thinks compromise is the road to hell.
I still think it is worthwhile for Democrats to compromise with Republicans when their ideas are worthwhile to advance progress in the nation (the ACA, one of their think tank’s ideas is an example of that).
But when they repudiate their own ideas just because Democrats happen to agree with them (the ACA, immigration reform, DACA, the Americans with Disabilities Act, &c), it’s awfully hard to have a functioning government anymore.
Some incisive criticism leveled against the British Government about their response to Irma. Direct comparisons made to the French response.

More from that essay above
Somehow, [Chris] Cillizza completely and conveniently forgets Clinton’s warrior form against one Donald J. Trump, whom she called a Russian puppet to his face while the media was still tickling its balls about her email nontroversy. Cillizza seems to have forgotten that Hillary Clinton went toe-to-toe with Donald Trump and warned everyone about Trump’s vicious racism, sexism and xenophobia while the fourth estate was ignoring that threat. Cillizza needs to be reminded that Hillary Clinton bore the torch and spoke out in favor of confronting institutional racism, pervasive sexism, blatant and latent xenophobia, and anti-LGBT bigotry. Bernie Sanders barely paid lip service - let alone confront - these very real scars of America’s national soul.
Hillary Clinton confronted Donald Trump and the real ills of American society that made Trump’s rise possible. Bernie Sanders confronted Hillary Clinton because it got him free airtime [emphasis mine].
The longer I saw Sen. Sanders in action toward the end of the primaries, and in the time since, the more firm I am in my belief my initial support was misplaced on the wrong politician. I like many of the ideas he floated, and those could be achieved with a good dose of pragmatism and hard work of politics and governance.
But it is apparent he is the wrong politician to deliver on his ideas. Many of them were adopted into the Democratic platform. Hillary Clinton is a pragmatist, and I firmly believe she could have delivered on some of Sen. Sanders’s own planks better than Sanders could. Had Sanders won the primary, I am quite sure the overwhelming majority of Democratic voters would have enthusiastically supported him, and tried their best to help advance his policies at the White House.
Dammit, I’m proud to be one of the eight Clinton voters in my township, out of several hundred votes. (I still can’t figure out who the three Stein voters are here, though I know who the two Johnson voters are.) I don’t care that Clinton taking this particular precinct was hopeless (or this House district) but I sure as hell thought she would take the swing states that went to Trump.
Conservative voters (even if they don’t know it) lost a great deal when she lost the election due to our archaic electoral college system. The whole nation lost a great deal.
You don’t have to like a politician, you only have to have a competent politician. In the General Election, there was only one competent politician left in the race, and that’s a damn shame she lost.
And Bernie’s presence was exploited by the GOP (and the Russians) for some weapons-grade ratfucking.

Oh, boy. I hope this woman is on Mr. Mueller’s radar … this explanation of how social media platforms personally worked with Mr. Trump’s campaign might be of interest to him (especially since she worked for Cambridge Analytica to advance Trump’s social media presence during the campaign).
This video is remarkable on how they leveraged social media and the $80 million dollars his campaign spent on adverts for social media to target individuals. (And, how much of that $80 million is tainted money—that is, from foreign sources.)
I hope Mark Zuckerberg and Jack Dorsey are getting headaches over this, and that this torpedoes any shot Zuck thought he had at buying leveraging Faceplant’s data to running for the Presidency.
It also shows why we need to strengthen out electoral laws to cover social media platforms.

“Beneath a graying sky that foreshadowed the hurricane to come, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd shrugged.
‘Never before did I think that we’d be beat up for giving people a warning and keeping people safe,’ he told local television crews. ‘But hey, that’s okay.’
He was referring to criticism that followed a string of tweets from his office Wednesday morning saying that anyone with an outstanding warrant would not be admitted to shelters during Hurricane Irma. Though some of the tweets singled out sexual offenders and predators, others said all people with warrants would be better off turning themselves into a secure space of a different kind — jail.
‘If you go to a shelter for #Irma, be advised: sworn LEOs will be at every shelter, checking IDs. Sex offenders/predators will not be allowed,’ read one tweet, using an acronym for “law enforcement officers.” The thread came from the Polk County Sheriff’s Twitter account, which uses a photo of Judd.
‘If you go to a shelter for #Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail,’ read another tweet, which received more than 7,800 likes. It had also garnered more than 7,800 replies by early Thursday morning, largely from users chastising Judd for potentially endangering people with warrants as a Category 5 hurricane ripped through the Caribbean and beamed toward Florida.”

On that note, I have to link to Ta-Nehisi Coates’ latest, The First White President
, which underscores just how central racism to Trump’s ascendancy and the ease in which attacks against him have been deflected, and just how sadly All-American it is:
The juxtaposition between the valid and even virtuous interests of the “working class” and the invalid and pathological interests of black Americans was not the province merely of blatant white supremacists like [Theodore] Bilbo. The acclaimed scholar, liberal hero, and future senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, in his time working for President Richard Nixon, approvingly quoted Nixon’s formulation of the white working class: “A new voice” was beginning to make itself felt in the country. “It is a voice that has been silent too long,” Nixon claimed, alluding to working-class whites. “It is a voice of people who have not taken to the streets before, who have not indulged in violence, who have not broken the law.”
It had been only 18 years since the Cicero riots; eight years since Daisy and Bill Myers had been run out of Levittown, Pennsylvania; three years since Martin Luther King Jr. had been stoned while walking through Chicago’s Marquette Park. But as the myth of the virtuous white working class was made central to American identity, its sins needed to be rendered invisible. The fact was, working-class whites had been agents of racist terrorism since at least the draft riots of 1863; terrorism could not be neatly separated from the racist animus found in every class of whites. Indeed, in the era of lynching, the daily newspapers often whipped up the fury of the white masses by invoking the last species of property that all white men held in common—white women. But to conceal the breadth of white racism, these racist outbursts were often disregarded or treated not as racism but as the unfortunate side effect of legitimate grievances against capital. By focusing on that sympathetic laboring class, the sins of whiteness itself were, and are still being, evaded.

In what world that makes sense I do not know.
Someone at the National Hurricane Center was having a whimsical day when it was time to name their storm-surge models.
…The image was created using the National Hurricane Center’s Sea, Lake, and Overland Surge from Hurricanes (SLOSH) model. This model divides the U.S. coast up into 20 or so separate grids (called basins) that storm surge simulations are performed for. If one takes the maximum the water reaches at any point in time at every grid cell in a SLOSH basin, a composite “Maximum Envelope of Water” (MEOW) plot can be made. MEOW plots are created for every category of storm moving in a particular direction, usually stratified by forward speed and tide elevation. Simulations are run using a variety of storm sizes. If one takes the maximum storm surge height for all the MEOW plots at every grid cell, one can generate a worst-case storm surge for the coast for each Saffir-Simpson hurricane category: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. These so-called “Maximum Of the MEOWs”, or “MOMs” are what are plotted in the SLOSH storm surge images on wunderground, and are the composite worst-case scenario storm surges from about 15,000 different hypothetical hurricanes for each SLOSH basin. All of the MOM images we provide are for high tide, and were performed using the 2009 version of the SLOSH Display Package provided to wunderground by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). …

Japanese twitter is freaking out about a massive solar flare with the potential to disrupt GPS and other communications systems. Not hearing much in our media. With the hurricane emergencies, that’s understandable. But it could also be your average mass hysteria event.
re: #38 Shropshire Slasher
Thanks!
From the article: If aimed toward Earth, the CME from these latest flares could lead to even more spectacular auroras, but could also damage satellites, communications and power systems. That cloud of charged plasma would arrive within 1 to 3 or 4 days, Steenburgh said, although CMEs triggered by energetic flares generally come quickly.
The surge of activity might seem surprising, as the sun is approaching its solar minimum, with the lowest levels of activity in its 11-year cycle.
“We are heading toward solar minimum, but the interesting thing about that is you can still have events, they’re just not as frequent,” Steenburgh said. “We’re not having X-flares every day for a week, for instance — the activity is less frequent, but no less potentially strong.”
“These kind of events are just part of living with a star,” Steenburgh added.
So now Wikileaks is a cut-out for North Korea, too?

But, you know, Clinton Foundation, corruption, emails, etc.
Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Where to begin on a morning like this? The wildfires out West that turned out to be more wide-ranging and damaging than anyone expected at the beginning of the year? The ongoing Harvey recovery? Or the impending doom that Irma is bringing to the Caribbean and likely the US mainland later this week?
Let’s start backwards:
Irma’s already killed at least 10 people across the Caribbean. Nearly 1 million people in Puerto Rico are without power - and some may be without power for weeks. Prior to hitting PR, Irma slammed into the smaller Caribbean islands, and the results were devastating. 90% of structures on one island were damaged; 60% left uninhabitable.
The storm is still at 180mph sustained winds. As a reminder, that’s the equivalent to a EF-4 tornado, except this is a storm that persists over a given area for hours - not seconds or minutes.
Florida’s evacuations and prep is strongly warranted, and if you’re trying to get out, there’s still reports of gouging. JetBlue capped flights to/from Florida at $99.
Oh, and Jose is on Irma’s heels, and may take a sideswipe at PR before heading north into the Gulf Stream.
Then there’s the wildfires that have caused damage across the West. Yosemite’s sequoia groves sustained some fire damage, but the more serious incidents were in Glacier NP, where a major wildfire burned a landmark chalet to the ground and 1,000s of people have been dislocated across the west due to the fires while millions have been suffering from respiratory ailments from the smoke that has settled in across much of the West.
Trump still doesn’t get the seriousness of the situation (global warming playing a contributing factor, or just the storms and natural disasters individually), but that’s not surprising given that other people like Rush don’t think it’s serious either. He doesn’t grasp the fact that he’s about to have two massive natural disasters striking within weeks of each other, and his focus (and that of the GOP) remains fixated on tax reform - tax cuts for millionaires like himself; after all, when he says that the estate tax is a problem for Americans, he clearly thinks that everyone is just like him when 99%+ of Americans (or their estates) will never pay it.

It is supposed to be a good remake. FWIW.
Oh, and Irma’s storm track is currently suggesting a double strike - first along the Florida coast in the vicinity of Miami, and then bouncing out to the Atlantic before striking somewhere near the GA-SC border. In other words, pretty much the entire Atlantic coast of Florida will be feeling this storm’s wrath, and most people living there do not have flood insurance (the main source of damage from hurricanes).
The NFIP isn’t sufficiently funded, nor is FEMA.
So when Trump says that everything is going well, he’s lying his ass off. It isn’t. Trump’s budget called for cuts to FEMA and the USCG.
And now that Harvey aid is being discussed, it’s looking like the GOP is looking to take funding previously scheduled for use to help build Gateway tunnel project (as part of the Sandy reconstruction package) to go to Harvey and Irma aid.
Once again, the GOP is about to fuck over the NYC metro area, which still is dealing with Sandy years after the fact.

Probably the most damning passage of the first article about the Clinton excerpts:
Sanders did not lack the “time or infrastructure” to develop a compelling message for the South. He certainly could have utilized all the time he used to explaining why Clinton winning the black vote in the South didn’t mean anything (because you know, the South doesn’t vote Democratic in the general, so why worry about the black folk there…) to instead “develop a compelling message.” Sanders didn’t develop a message for the South - or for the midwest and the west with heavy Latino populations - because he never cared to. Trying to address racial inequities was a distraction from his economic message primarily focused to address white pain, and he wasn’t going to bother.
I very much agree with this. I don’t think Sanders is a bigot on the level of Trump or most wingnuts but I do think he has an indifference to racism and racial inequalities that Clinton to her credit did not.

Which is naive as shit. I mean I can understand why the college kids that embrace him may believe that but he’s seventy six. He’s old enough to see that the WWC loudly rejected the Great Society explicitly because LBJ wanted to make sure every American regardless of race could enjoy the same fruits that the New Deal got many whites. Maybe he’s spent too much time in Vermont, I don’t know but he should know better than that.
I said even after the election that he should be old enough to remember when Jews were, for the most part, not even treated as ‘White’. Hell, you still get that today, just maybe not so blatantly, so….yeah.
I think Coates made some great points about the WWC and people like Anthony Bourdain, Nick Kristoff, and even Joe Biden who want to have a sort of denial about the prejudices of the WWC people they grew up with. As Coates got at, the WWC wasn’t some innocent group that had been “long quiet” as Monyihan inaccurately said, no the WWC greatly resented racial minorities from the start. The 1863 Draft Riots and later the riots that happened when black people moved into Northern neighborhoods. As I said, I don’t really think Sanders is a bigot but I think he’s amazigly naive for a man his age and experience in public life.

I think that’s what astounds me the most about him. I’d think being Jewish and even having had distant relatives that died in the Holocaust, he might understand better the sense of “other” many racial and religious minorities have been made to feel. TBH with you, I think why I might be more sympathetic to the plight of minorities than my brother is because being on the ASD spectrum, I’m a bit of an “other” myself.

I think it’s deeper. Anything their guy (whomever THEIR guy is) = good. Anything Dem = Bad. If Trump did something with the Dems, it was his master 11th dimensional chess playing negotiating skills that got something something and he’s the best at something or other.
It used to be GOP=Good and Dem=Bad but now they’ve started to eat the GOP because of “establishment” this and that.
Of course, we have our own purity ponies to deal with so this isn’t exclusive to the GOP.

To me, the battle within the left isn’t an ideological one just like the battle within the right wasn’t one. Kasich actually implemented a lot of the things that are very popular with conservative voters as Ohio’s governor and worked to implement as a representative. What’s going on here is something much more than that. Within the left too. I actually don’t really have too much disagreement with the OR Wing, I think universal health care is a great goal to consider and I think we should definitely strive for more affordable post secondary education but I also have this pragmatic streak that comes from reading history. It’s knowing that the Nordic countries didn’t just do socialized health care. It did take time and we have other factors i.e. a societal aversion to SOCIALISM, a much bigger country, and yes racial resentments that make that harder. Of course, you bring that up and you get called a neo-lib or told to shut up about identity politics but we didn’t create identity politics. Identity politics were forced on us from the start.

I think this is probably right on. For MAGA, if he’s collaborated with Dems it must be some great WONDERFUL idea or plan. And in the future MAGA can claim Trump gave you something how come you won’t give Trump something, negotiate with Trump, etc and the media will no doubt bite.

Yes, for MAGA, the GOP congress itself can’t be trusted. Trump is their only true guardian, the only one dedicated to their interests, etc.
But I do think this represents an important shift in the conservative base or a large portion of that base, from a stance that, beginning with the Tea Party, was obstensibly about True Conservative Patriot Americans Less Government to a less ideological, more personal candidate driven Followerism.

The danger is that the same compromises that were made in order to push forward the New Deal will be made here, i.e. the exclusion of minorities and ‘others’ in order to bring the white majority on board. Which would inevitably be used as more fuel for ‘see, everything equal now and they still fail, why can’t you accept they’re just inherently inferior subhumans now?!’

Or to the extent there is any remaining ideological component to MAGA, it’s about immigration restriction, the racial and ethnic purification of the country to be had from barring ferners and deporting the ones here. Anything that can be construed as serving that end will be tolerated.

That’s a terrific point. And it’s why I’m so troubled by Sanders dismissing “identity politics.” Black people didn’t choose to be black in this country. We made them marginalized. And while as I said I don’t think Sanders has a personal prejudice towards racial minorities, I think for a progressive, he’s not very sensitive to their experiences in this country. The way he dismissed that young Latina who wanted to be the second Latina senator for example. Easy for you to say “It should be more than just that” when you’re a white guy or even a white Jewish guy.
Bernie btw isn’t being nearly as loud as he should be about DACA. I know he spoke out against what was done but he needs to join Harris, Schumer, Murkowski, and Graham’s DREAM Bill now.

What happens when a hurricane smashes into a broken chem regulatory system? We’re about to find out.houstonchronicle.com …
11:17 PM - Sep 6, 2017 * Houston, TX
I’ve been hearing reports some people are already showing symptoms from people being in water with funky petrochemicals. Some people are showing skin rashes and are getting sick.
With Trump tearing up the Federal safety systems and putting states in the responsibility of regulations we are going to be hearing about more and more nasty chemical and other environmental problems.
MAGA - Making America Goopy Again.
Hurricane Irma continues to astound with its power and fury; thankfully the death toll has remained low, but it is almost certain to rise as it heads into the Bahamas and then to the US coast. We’ll also probably hear about more killed in PR and the USVI as well as a result of the storm and its after-effects.
A hurricane warning for the U.S. Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands was discontinued on Wednesday evening, the National Hurricane Center said. The center said hurricane watches would likely be issued for portions of the Florida Keys and the Florida peninsula on Thursday.
Hurricane Irma has had 185 mph winds longer than any other hurricane in recorded history, CBS News’ weather producer David Parkinson reports.
Parkinson adds that although it appeared Irma had hit peak intensity earlier, it is going through another eyewall replacement cycle, which means the strongest winds will extend further from the storm. It is possible winds bump up to 190 mph Thursday.
So what’s fueling this storm? Much warmer than typical sea temperatures, which extend for more than 200 feet into the ocean combined with warmer than average air temps. The combination means that there’s a lot of energy for the storm to feed off.
A strong high pressure system around Bermuda is keeping the storm on a track to redistribute Florida’s coastal regions.
Maybe I am a little rough on Sanders but you know, for all the damn town halls he does and all the damn stuff he does to raise his profile for 2020. He could be using that damn to trying to understand why these “identity politics” are an issue. Sorry Bern, you can’t just blame Wall Street and unregulated capitalism for everything. That doesn’t explain why Michael Bennett was harassed by police in Las Vegas. That doesn’t explain why successful DACA recipients now have to worry about being deported. I’m in agreement that we should listen to the concerns of the working class but unlike Bernie, I think we have and the problem isn’t us, it’s many of them for not wanting to listen. I now it’s tough when jobs move and that really does suck. But economies do transition. And Hillary for all the hatred of her did have plans to revitalize those communities but they didn’t want to hear about it. Either because she didn’t go to their resentments or because maybe they plain didn’t like her. I don’t know.

re: #68 HappyWarrior
Would not that indifference signal an issue with race? Ignoring it never helped this country in the past. Ignoring it now will just allow the backslide we are already seeing.
The news that White Christians are now not the majority of this country might be a good thing.

Absolutely. He’s too busy seeing Wall Street and Big Business that he’s not seeing the other issues. I grew up in a very wealthy and diverse county but my one brother can still tell you about the differences in what he experienced driving with his African-American friends and driving with me were like. Sanders seems to see these issues as “distractions” and I think that’s why he never gained too much traction with minority communities, I think many of those communities were and still are receptive to a lot of his ideas but they wanted to see some empathy rather than dismissing their problems as mere distractions of capitalism.

The GOP wanted to push the debt ceiling out past midterms.
Edit: As for what the Democrats get, this separates disaster funding from the debt ceiling, but it puts it in the middle of Christmas and when government funding will be discussed. And the GOP in both chambers are going to need Democrats for those deals because too many of their own members are going to be against specific parts of any negotiation: “I want spending reduced!” “I want more money for my project!”.

What strikes me is that the BBs were the intended targets of the misinformation. That’s important because the Russians saw the rise of Bernie as being the most destabilising aspect of the 2016 election along with Trump. Let that sink in. Beat or weaken Hillary by pushing Trump and enraging BBs. Sure they would have done the same to any Hillary primary opponent but he was an utter gift. That is so wrong but hilarious. I’m surprised Peggy had time from fondling her Reagan doll to suggest that Jackson and Lee were somehow fighting a moral cause. Just an absurd suggestion she made. Yeah the Civil War was a moral cause and Lee/Jackson were on the wrong damn side of it.

See, this is the problem right there. The debt ceiling increase used to a be formality, a bill that passed without comment and was treated as if it were just part of doing business. Then the GOP decided when a black man took office that suddenly, the debt ceiling was “SERIOUS BUSINESS!!11” and they needed to turn it into an annual drama where they try to use the threat of defaulting on the nation’s debts to extract concessions from the White House.
Well guess what, fuckers, that works both ways. The DNC isn’t in charge, they’re not going to be blamed if your nutty backbenchers push the country into a financial crisis.
re: #122 Interesting Times
I’m still a bit confused on the implications of the deal with Pelosi/Schumer - from what I understand, trump agreed to Harvey Relief and a debt-ceiling extension for 3 months. Meanwhile, GOPers were pushing a 6-to-18 month extension and…? I don’t get it. Why is the 3-month window better than the longer one? What else were GOPers trying to get?
As far as I can tell, Trump did it as a poke to the eyes of Ryan and McConnell. I think he liked the power of it and it allows him to shake them up thinking they will cower to his power to be able to just skirt right past them. Also, they have to go through this all again so Trump may be thinking he softened them up to get more out of them in 3 months.
All it has done is put both Ryan and McConnell in bad moods and I think both are the kind of guys that are gonna go grudge on Trump and literally grind government to a stalemate.
And that stalemate might just be what the Democrats wanted. Pelosi and Schumer may be thinking they can syphon off enough “moderate” Republican votes while the GOP is at war with itself to create a majority of their own combining Democrats and a few Republicans.
Really nothing to lose for the Democrats. Lots to gain if they can stall things while Mueller is at work.

Watch; that’s exactly what is playing out once again. GOP wants out of the disaster relief obligation (there’s that pesky Constitution that gets in the way, that they ignore - Art. 1, Sec. 8 (General Welfare clause)) and they’ll shift the burdens to states that can’t afford them.
Texas has a $140 billion in damage? They can’t afford to rebuild the infrastructure portion on their own without federal assistance - not when the state wont dip into their rainy day fund.
Florida may see similar damage and both states have constitutional requirements for a balanced budget, which essentially means they can’t rebuild critical infrastructure without federal assistance.

He got praised by Steve King no less for being atypical of many on the left on the subject. I admit, I didn’t like Sanders record on guns but I could forgive that but I was much less sympathetic knowing about his immigration record and the fact that he sponsored legislation that was considered among the worst acts of environmental racism. I don’t think butane and propane is something you want to be breathing in.
It’s just my opinion based on an activity that used to go on at my old job. I worked around a lot of guys…racing team and auto parts, etc.
Sometimes to cover the offensive smells they would almost empty a damn can of air freshener. I found myself many times having a hard time breathing in that environment.
One day I grabbed a can and started to read the ingredients. Not good.
That was some time ago, so maybe some of them have toned down the contents.
But if you type in “are air fresheners bad for you” into Google, check the results. Sure some of it might be scare tactics but I think it best to err on the side of being wary of them.
I have a very sensitive nose and it tingles every time I get around air fresheners. A little sting in the eyes too. Maybe it is just me.

Life has been a heady journey for Mr. Carter, a middle-class product of the Ottawa suburbs, who as a youth worked stints as a railway lineman and cemetery digger. He talked his way into a job at Time in the late 1970s before cofounding, in 1986, Spy magazine, whose cheeky skewering of the Manhattan power elite would influence a generation of journalists and writers.
Spy took special glee in attacking Mr. Trump, who Mr. Carter memorably deemed a “short-fingered vulgarian.” Among the magazine’s pranks was to mail checks of smaller and smaller quantities to celebrities and wait to see who was avaricious enough to cash them; Mr. Trump redeemed a check for 13 cents.

Sanders and his more obnoxious supporters should just fuck off with their divisive personality-driven bullshit.
However, the Democrats do need to beef up their proposals on economic policy issues.
The ever-increasing gap between productivity and wages means that many who work in the US will be worse off economically than their parents were. In general this is politically destabilizing, and in the US it gets worse because people who are worse off than their parents are going to disproportionally be white.
So we have one of the classic ingredients for a revolution coupled with race issues the US has always had difficulty dealing with.
The Democrats must absolutely not pander to racist sentiments that too many in the white working class use to justify tr*mp support. It’s politically hopeless to try to outdo Republicans on this front, and it would be reprehensible to try. Instead the Democrats need to take a hard look at that productivity-wages gap and come up with some bold proposals.
IMO ‘business as usual’ on economics (with tweaks here and there) will either lose to right wing populist lies or win by such puny margins that little/nothing can be done.

The other article that Citizen K linked to was quite good too. It really I think in its own way showed why Clinton was more courageous in confronting issues that Sanders was not. I’ve noticed something funny about candidates like Sanders and Ron Paul, I bring Ron Paul up because Ron Paul like Bernie had a huge youth following among white college kids. I get why Sanders had appeal. I really do but I also get why even some ardent lefties were turned off too. It’s not even really the fact that he’s not a Democrat. It’s that if you really look at Sanders, it’s apparent he’s not a team player which I find hilarious given you need team play to get the society he wants. A lot of lefty Dems didn’t seem to understand why people preferred Clinton over him and I think part of the reason is Clinton campaigned for many of them. You can cry about that being politics all you want but the fact is, when you’re an elected official, it’s nice to know someone has your back. I said it yesterday but I think last year was the first honest to God time that Bernie actually campaigned for a Democrat. Meanwhile we’ve all probably had Clinton campaign in our states for one Democrat or the other. I can remember Hillary and Obama campaigning for Kaine when he ran for Governor in 2005, Bill and Hill did the same for Governor McAuliffe, etc. Politics is a team game and it’s ironic to me that the face of the ideology that should be all about workign together is one of the most selfish politicians I’ve seen. He did endorse Tom Perriello here in Virginia but as I recall, he made his endorsement and lent his name and that was pretty much it.

A lot of the same people who hate Hillary hate Nancy as well. The most pathetic thing was seeing I think one of the Young Turks dudes blame her for the Iraq War Resolution passing even though A) Republicans controlled the House in 2002, B) Nancy opposed it, and C) Not only did she oppose it she whipped up Democratic opposition to it but because the far left hates the Dem establishment so much, they don’t care about these pesky things called facts.

The same companies that have had issues with inadequately vetting security clearances face a backlog and are still allowing people who shouldn’t be anywhere near classified info to get temporary clearances.
That’s a separate question from the need/reason to have so much classified info, especially when that info is often mischaracterized or misclassified as sensitive for no good reason.

“Some conservatives are upset” about the decision Trump made to support the Democratic spending bill, Fox & Friends co-host Pete Hegseth said Thursday morning.
“Big time,” Steve Doocy, his co-host, agreed.
“Big time,” Hegseth echoed. “But you know what? This is a clear shot at [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell and [Speaker of the House] Paul Ryan: ‘Hey guys, if you can’t get things done, then, listen, I’ll go work with the Democrats.’”
“‘And I’ll work with the things like raising the debt ceiling, and the continuing resolution to fund the government, and [Hurricane] Irma,’” Hegseth said, trailing off while listing the various benefits included in the Democratic package. He went on to commend the president for being “very strategic” in working with the House and Senate minority leaders, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer.
“Isn’t it refreshing to see them work together, though?” co-host Ainsley Earhardt said.
And then Dobbs chimed in.
“The president not only took RINO [Republican In Name Only] Ryan to the woodshed but eliminated any need for any Republican to ever pretend again that Ryan is a real Republican in any way or that any RINO has a political future after Mr. Trump simply booted the hapless fool of a Speaker out of the way of those trying to get the nation’s business done,” Dobbs said.
…
“Contrast Ryan’s inane insults, his obstinance and subversion of President Trump to the behavior and rhetoric of Democratic leadership of late,” Dobbs continued. “They’ve calmed themselves. They’ve been far more conciliatory in their rhetoric over recent weekends and now Ryan is fully exposed to the nation.”

Bit of lightness for now. Was talking with friends about beverages which no longer exist. I mentioned Quatro, a short-lived soft drink in the mid 1980s, based on a four fruit juice base. They didn’t remember it, it was that brief, it seemed it was just me that was drinking cans of it exclusively for just a single summer because I was bored with the ubiquitous Irn Bru. And then it just disappeared. Even though it had a very memorable advert on both TV and cinema. I tried to explain the advert to my friends, but gave up and just said it’s about as 80s as you could imagine, and then did a quick search for the ad on YouTube.
I found it. And it’s even more 80s than I remember it.

Obviously in an election that was so close anything she did or didn’t do can be questioned. I think she, like many Democrats, has fallen a bit too hard for the Demographics is Destiny argument in American electoral politics. I did, too.
But I suspect that, beyond the pluses and minuses of who she was, she was hurt by developments that were not of her doing. Outside of Obama’s specific re-election win, the Democrats lost ground almost everywhere at all levels of government. This happens to most administrations for a few years at some levels of government but usually not across the board.

Not to excuse the college kids ignorance but the older Bros I find much more infuriating because they should know better.
But yeah I want to know why it’s okay for Bernie to take control of a party that he won’t even commit to joining. When you become your party’s nominee, you’re becoming the face of your party. Bernie didn’t and I still don’t think wants that. He wanted to push his message and that’s fine but he and his supporters shouldn’t act outraged and pushy when there’s pushback on that from people who have actually been working in the trenches for the Democratic Party. His far lefty supporters accuse the Dems of ignoring them. Bernie won’t even bother committing to joining the party becaues Bernie’s about Bernie.

Don’t know anything about Andy, but that Graham-Cassidy bill is an abomination.

This is Andy:
Ran Medicare, Medicaid & ACA for President Obama. @bpc_bipartisan, Senior Advisor. @usatoday, Columnist. Opinions mine.
I don’t know much about the GC bill other than it hits some states immediately with sharp cuts and the rest down the road. What does it do for anything actually related to healthcare other than take away funding?

Welp—they just cancelled all city meetings next week in anticipation of Irma.
The latest from my go-to local meteorologist, Ed Piotrowski :
The latest forecast track from the National Hurricane Center brings Irma close to the GA/SC line midday Monday. PLEASE remember, that is a forecast point and the average error at day 5 is roughly 240 miles either side of that point. That means the hurricane could end up heading directly for the Grand Strand or it could go inland over Florida and Georgia. Right now, the most likely track is down the center line.
Notice the bend in the forecast track back to the northwest as it moves toward GA/SC. An upper-level low-pressure system over the gulf coast could pull Irma inland and drag it across much of South Carolina and into the mountains. Because Irma is so big, it is possible damaging wind and flooding rain will impact the entire state of South Carolina. Again I will stress, the severity of those winds and amount of rain will depend on precisely where Irma makes landfall. For now, much of the state could see tropical storm force winds. Those closest to the center and near the coast will likely see hurricane force winds…
If Irma follows the forecast path exactly, much of the Pee Dee, Border Belt and the Grand Strand will likely see at least similar conditions experienced during hurricane Matthew. If Irma tracks farther south, impacts would be lower. If Irma moves closer to the Grand Strand, impacts would be higher. It is IMPOSSIBLE to know precisely who gets the highest winds and heaviest rain, so I cannot speculate on flooding, but it is possible.
(thought this might be helpful for when you’re talking to your dad) I’m still in a holding pattern. Ordered a new phone charger and some needed batteries from Amazon, but just saw that the batteries won’t be here till next Wednesday. So it’s off to CVS to see if they still have any D batteries left.

It looks like it’s mainly block grants to states and other bullshit. I read it a few days ago, but my mind is clogged with so much crap, I can’t remember the details.
