UPDATE: White House-Accredited Fake News Blog Gateway Pundit Tries to Duck Responsibility in Doxing the Wrong Person for the Florida Shooting

WTF • Views: 63,204
Jim Hoft (r), owner of the far right fake news blog Gateway Pundit

As we reported yesterday, the White House-accredited blog Gateway Pundit (home of the fabled “Stupidest Man on the Internet,” Jim Hoft) published the personal details of someone they claimed was the Florida high school shooter, based on one tweet that spelled his name wrong. Writer Lucian Wintrich doxed the wrong person in his rush to pin the blame for the mass shooting on the left.

This was the screaming headline they originally put on this massive fail of an article:

The original is stored at archive.is, for posterity, including the word “Florida” misspelled as “Flordia,” not once but three times.

And today, Wintrich is laughably trying to cover up this massive fail by claiming it was someone else who identified and outed the wrong person.

They’ve deleted their screenshot of the wrong person’s voter registration details, and the headline now reads:

“Some sources!” That’s rich. You almost have to admire the gall it takes to try to duck responsibility for their malicious screw-up so blatantly.

(The word “Florida” is still misspelled in this updated and sanitized article, by the way.)

The mainstream news outlets that originally published an incorrect name for the shooter all corrected their articles as soon as the right name was reported — but only Gateway Pundit rushed to look up personal details and recklessly published them, and only Gateway Pundit claimed the shooter was a registered Democrat in their typical haste to blame the mass murder on Democrats and the left.

Lucian Wintrich is an officially accredited White House correspondent.

And in fact, the accused Florida mass murderer has an extensive history of far right sympathies, including a reported association with a notorious militant white supremacist group. (Update: local authorities now say they’ve found no evidence to confirm this report. See the link below.)

I would like to point out that the only reason Cruz didn’t have a fully automatic machine gun is that they were outlawed for private use before LaPierre was born. Otherwise, it would be perfectly legal for anyone to acquire such a weapon. The AR-15 and every similar weapon should be treated the same way as a machine gun.

Of course, we will first have to destroy the NRA and every similar organization.

Not shocking to me at all — after Sandy Hook, my NRA Breitbart loving “friend” did not express any concern for the deaths of children; he only cared about any minimal gun restrictions. These people are evil.

This is also probably the reason why folks here occasionally end up blocked by some of the higher profile tweeps like Stonekettle or ABL. If you start having an argument with someone else in a reply chain and you don’t pull them out of the reply-to stuff, well, I’m pretty sure both of them have a policy of blocking folks who carry on arguments in their mentions. Stonekettle might give a warning, but it’s really common courtesy to clean up the replies so you’re not filling up someone’s mentions with an argument they didn’t ask to be involved in.

Be a good Twitter citizen and if you decide you have to engage with someone, consider carefully who needs to be on the reply list.

huffingtonpost.com

The Republic of Florida, a white nationalist militia, confirmed Thursday that the man charged in Wednesday’s school shooting in Parkland, Florida, was involved in some of its activities.
Jordan Jereb, a leader within the group, told The Associated Press that shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz had participated in the group’s paramilitary drills in Tallahassee.

Jereb also told the Anti-Defamation League that Cruz had carpooled to the training exercises with other members of the group. He said Cruz had been “brought up” by a member of ROF, though it was not clear what this meant.
Cruz, 19, has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder in Wednesday’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Jereb told the AP that Cruz had “trouble with a girl” and thinks that may have been linked to him carrying out the attack on Valentine’s Day.
Jereb also told The Daily Beast that ROF bought Cruz at least one of his guns. He speculated that Cruz’s training with the group helped him carry out Wednesday’s massacre.
“I’m not trying to glorify it, but he was pretty efficient in what he did,” Jereb said. “He probably used that training to do what he did
.”

These guys need to be classified as a terrorist group and prosecuted.

These guys need to be classified as a terrorist group and prosecuted.

There is a template for doing this:

FT. SMITH, ARK. — The indictments of 15 white supremacists here and in Denver late last week on charges of sedition, conspiracy and civil rights violations involve a nationwide government effort that authorities say is aimed at breaking the back of America`s violence-prone racist movement.

The grand jury action in Arkansas capped a week-long, nationwide law enforcement initiative against a raft of hate groups.

These groups` activities came under scrutiny after a cadre of neo-Nazis called The Order was linked to a spree of racially motivated robberies and murders that began in 1984.

Court actions against ultra-right figures have been launched in Illinois, Colorado, California, Idaho, North Carolina and Arkansas as prosecutors began disclosing information culled in a lengthy investigation code-named “Clean Sweep.“

In Denver, indictments for civil rights violations were issued on Friday against four people in one of the most spectacular of the Order crimes, the machine-gun slaying in 1984 of Alan Berg, the controversial host of a Denver radio talk show.

One member of the Berg hit squad, Robert Jay Matthews, leader of The Order, died in an 1984 shootout with police. The other four suspects are in federal prison after convictions for earlier Order crimes.

Leading the list of those indicted in Arkansas were the Rev. Richard Butler, head of the Idaho-based Aryan Nations neo-Nazi group, and Robert Miles, a neo-Nazi and Klan leader in Cochtah, Mich. The two are widely considered the top elders in the hate movement.

Also indicted on sedition was Louis Beam, a Texas Klan leader who established a nationwide computer bulletin board linking racist groups.

Absolutely right - I also sometimes block people who insist on including me in endless pointless arguments and filling up my mentions with things I have no interest in.

Twitter does have a “Mute This Conversation” option now, but it’s very porous and doesn’t work well enough. Sometimes blocking people is the only way to stop it.

Probably guilty of this. Just figured out how to decouple/unlink individuals in a response/retweet today. It’s actually very easy. Just didn’t know you could do it.

IIJM, or is this outpouring of social-media pleas from the surviving victims/targets of the Parkland shooting - basically a call to “Authority” to cut the bullshit and start doing something substantive about the sick level of gun violence in this country - something new?

In most other school shootings, as I seem to recall, the “survivors” have generally been kept away from the press (for the most part) and left to deal with the emotional fallout between themselves/their families/grief counselors, etc.: It looks like something different here: the students themselves calling out the hollow “thoughts-and-prayers” boilerplate, and demanding action.

Australia is a free society, and they got rid of guns after the a major mass shooting.

We’ve had 100s since then, and still do nothing except make excuses.

Japan has a free society. Israel has a free society, and both put heavy burdens on those seeking to own guns. European countries (western Europe) have free societies, and yet they too have heavy burdens to gun ownership.

Only here in the US do we treat a well regulated militia as anyone with a goddamned pulse can buy a AR-15 and enough ammo to kill dozens of people and wound 600 in under 10 minutes as though this should be normal.

So, the FBI is saying that they got tips about the FL shooter, but they couldn’t find him.

Well, let’s take a step back.

Last year, Trump decided to change the focus (and cutting funding) of the Countering Violent Extremism from dealing with right wing extremist groups, such as white supremacists, KKK, Nazis, etc., to focus on Islamic terrorists.

Now, we find that the FBI couldn’t track this guy down, despite the fact that he was known to associate with white supremacists?

Yeah, what are the odds.

Put simply, the blood is on Trump’s hands with his decision to give his supporters a pass on any kind of scrutiny by law enforcement.

Just to be clear, the Grassley bill (aka Trump’s White Supremacist Wish List) failed 39-60, while the “Common Sense Coalition” bill failed by 54-45.

Something tells me El Jefe Naranjo isn’t going to be calling for Yertle to use the nuclear option so that we can go back to a 51-vote majority to pass bills.

According to the LA Times,

Three Democrats — Kamala Harris of California and the two senators from New Mexico, Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich — voted against the measure, including mainly out of a concern that its border security provisions went too far. Eight Republicans — those who were part of the bipartisan accord — voted in favor.

Maybe had something to do with this bit (via CNN):

The plan would also place $25 billion in a guarded trust for border security, would cut a small number of green cards each year for adult children of current green card holders, and would prevent parents from being sponsored for citizenship by their US citizen children if that child gained citizenship through the pathway created in the bill or if they brought the child to the US illegally.

I mean that provision does kind of suck, but I think it’s something you could give up as part of a compromise.

There’s an argument to be made (I would have to look at a lot of numbers) to suggest that the restrictionist immigration view is growing in the GOP because the GOP overall is shrinking. If 30 people support something out of 300, it’s 10%; if 30 out of 200 support it, it’s 15%. Have to figure out why the position is gathering strength.

It can be argued - indeed, I have argued it - that most of the things proposed by the Right are about maintaining white supremacy.
- Voter ID
- Gerrrymandering
- Retaining the Electoral College
- Restricting immigration
- Repealing the 17th Amendment
- Constitutional Convention

All of these pretty much directly empower rural white voters over metro area voters, in an attempt to cement their political power against demographic inevitability. I HOPE Trump’s election was their last gasp, their Ardennes Counteroffensive.

So remember - when Trumpkins demand surrender, the historically correct response is “Nuts!”

What we really see is the Pickett’s Charge of the culture war going on right now. It’s an unsustainable charge, one that is flying in the face of all common sense, because the alternative is to concede defeat. And once that concession is made, then the war is effectively lost and the best they can do is negotiate favorable terms. So they will ride into the guns, sacrificing lives and futures for a futile grasp at a victory that remains out of reach, because they see no other choice.

There’s parts of that I agree with, but I don’t actually think Trump is scared of the consequences of deportation. That’s why he’s balking at the deal right now. He was never going to agree with a bipartisan deal.

I do agree that Democrats don’t need to take anything that sacrifices one group of immigrants for another. I didn’t mind Schumer’s concession of money for the wall because the wall is going to take longer to build than Trump will be in office.

I thought the bill as written says “border security” and not specifically a wall. I think that goes to what has been talked about more lately…drones, cameras, more patrol, additional fencing where still needed, etc.

I saw a picture of one of the heartbroken fathers looking for his dead daughter. He was wearing a Trump 2020 shirt.

I felt no schadenfreude, and I was pleased about that, because I thought I was a more terrible person than that now. I have nothing but empathy for a man suffering like nobody ever should. Plus, it’s true to say that Trump himself has done little to worsen the appalling state of human sacrifice in this country. He may be incapable of empathy and actively incite violence rather than condemn it, but Americans, and especially Republicans, have created this sacrificial cult without any help from the evil dictator in the White House.

But even with all that he’s going through, I would lay better than even money that that guy votes Trump in 2020 just like his shirt says. Cultists love their children, but they need hate more than air.

Now, here’s the problem: Keeping this from getting swamped by something else Trump does.

Some of the students that have been on TV are making some very strong heartfelt comments on TV.

These youngsters are also media savvy.

This is going to be real bad for politicians as these kids are now making louder noises than the NRA and their supporters.

I sure hope that maybe, just maybe the last 5 months of carnage are beginning to make a strong impression on Americans.

Polls have shown 85+% backing of background checks and overall gun control is at about 70%. This is going to make these numbers concrete. A good time to change when you have that strong a base.

We ordinary people are more empowered now as witnesses and therefore the strongest advocates for change. We have more power as witnesses than ever in human history because of the cameras in our phones and taking to instant live social media. Use responsibly but use it. Run with it.

I’ll concede the suicide at a closed school shouldn’t count as a school shooting. But a shooting at 1 a.m. at a sorority event at Wake Forrest and a shooting outside of a high school basketball game should count, even if classes weren’t in session.

Regardless, this bit is not very reassuring:

Five of Everytown’s 18 school shootings listed for 2018 happened during school hours and resulted in any physical injury. Three others appeared to be intentional shootings but did not hurt anyone. Two more involved guns — one carried by a school police officer and the other by a licensed peace officer who ran a college club — that were unintentionally fired and, again, led to no injuries. At least seven of Everytown’s 18 shootings took place outside normal school hours.

Really, what a poll on any single issue fails to capture is the complexities of what makes people vote for a given politician. The 80% number might be just fine with background checks expanding, NRA be damned. But you don’t get to vote on just their gun control position. You’re getting the package deal. And so some people who might be fine with gun control but could never allow a woman the right to choose because pro-life will vote for the R because the other option would be someone who lets the ladies choose.

Hell with those guys. This one is not offended in the least by you but I am of course by the idiots (gun owners or not) that refuse to put children’s safety at the forefront of the argument today.

What responsible owners do is redouble our efforts to put safety first and advocate with others for sensible actions. By sensible I mean along the lines of Gabby Giffords advocacy.

NRA lawyers would disagree, but I say after my own legal research and consultations with sharp professionals-We can restrict the most dangerous guns without bans like those overturned. The guys i talked to are gun lawyers that defend gun owners. Not makers, owners.

Gun nuts and conspiracy theorists were able to take advantage of the young age of the victims and witnesses at Newtown to deny that the event had even occurred. With so many media savvy adolescents, this massacre may have much more of an impact. The survivors can tell their heartrending stories this time around.

Perhaps I’m in the mood to indulge in a little wishful thinking….

psst, mitch:

Trump threatens to veto bipartisan immigration bill

I think another factor involved in all this is that the immigration “issue” is also the last of Trump’s BFD campaign issues that hasn’t been up for Congressional action: And most of his “agenda” has, so far, been pretty much a series of failures: Outside, of course, of boosting military spending (not hard in Washington), and the Republicans’ execrable tax bill (not his idea), Trump’s first year in the White House has (to date) little positive to show for it: and it’s come at the cost of pretty much ALL his Presidential credibility. Having to salvage any sort of compromise, especially on his stupid Wall, over immigration (after his constant “build-the-Wall, throw ‘em out. keep ‘em out! ” “nativist” rhetoric) is likely to be spun as just another Trump failure: and, loser that is, that’s just too much to hope he’s going to go for without a fight. From the Daily Intelligencer:

Earlier this week, the Trump administration released its budget proposal for 2019. Included among the many programs that the White House wants to cut are several meant to enhance school safety and help communities recover from tragedies like the one that took place in Florida this week, Politico reports.

The budget reportedly cuts $24 million from national school-safety programs and would eliminate “project prevent grants,” which are used to “serve students exposed to pervasive violence,” according to the Education Department. In the past, these grants have funded services such as conflict resolution and “other school-based violence

I hope people take notice. Trump and his lackeys pay lip service to making schools safe but then turn around and defund initiatives that might actually help reduce violence in schools.

the bill may say that. The items voted on today were amendments, at least one of which specifically mentioned $25 billion for the wall.

And that one is the one that crashed and burned by the biggest margin, right?

That is the point I was (poorly) trying to make. The wall as envisioned by Trump may be dead. The other items for security are alive.

I had one right-wing family member left, my youngest cousin. She’s got a good heart and we tried for a long time to be each other’s tokens in the middle of our respective political ideologies.

Her husband is the president of our local NRA chapter. I wanted to keep a channel open to see if we could reach some agreements. We never came close, but we tolerated each other.

She just posted an invite to a local NRA event this weekend.

I love my cousin.

I unfriended her.

If you asked someone like that whether Trump is working to save kids’ lives, s/he’d say, “Yes.” These are uninformed persons we’re dealing with, and since their major source for news is Fox, they don’t know that Trump rolled back Obama’s policy that was meant to keep guns out of the hands of severely, and documented, mentally ill persons, even though keeping guns out of the hands of mentally ill persons was the focus of his BS-filled speech earlier today.

The crazy thing about this is that proposing something with 85% favorability is electoral poison.

I caught a bit of Morning Joe and one of them said this is a bit of misguided thinking; more of NRA power positioning.

His contention was voting lately around the country and over the last few years does show favorability for sensible gun policies.

That leads me to believe it is all about the money. Politicians might be saying that and making that a scare tactic because it pays very well.

Something to consider. Maybe that poison is really a placebo. $6 to $3 million to some senators can get those guys to say just about anything.

This could be very well be right: unfortunately, it will have to withstand a real-world electoral test to be proved right: though the prospect of the NRA losing a well-publicized campaign to an avowed opponent would have to give them fits: once their image as this unstoppable, unopposable Juggernaut of American politics gets broken, its going to be hard to put back together.

That fits in with the chilling observation I read here that the rise of truly malignant gun nuttery in the US coincides neatly with the decline of lynchings and cross burnings as a method for white racists to entertain themselves in regions they politically dominate.

Don’t permit it to bother you too much. I unfriended a former student after I noticed that every time I posted something about PBO being a Christian, he felt the need to respond and go on the attack and try to “prove” that PBO wasn’t a Christian, he was a Muslim. It got on my last damn nerve, so I unfriended him. First, he tried to send me a message through someone else’s Face book link, then, he tried to sic his mother on me. She sent me a Facebook message about it. I read no further than: “You know Ms. R, I’ve always respected you…. I ignored her ass, too. Deleted her post within 20 seconds. The guy is about 40 years old and feels the need to get his mom to fight his battles for him? Excuse me, but I ain’t the one to put up with his or her BS. I didn’t put up with it when he was my student, and I sure as hell am not going to put up with it on Facebook. He asked me to be his Facebook friend. He lives in SC now and has adopted the “conservative” way of “managing” the world by using authoritarian BS tactics. Both of them backed off after trying to reach me in more ways than one because they finally figured out that I didn’t give two sh*ts about the BS they were trying to push off on me. I’m a Christian who tries to live Christian principles, and I don’t waste my time with those who call themselves Christians while mimicking the GOP’s anti-Christian talking points. Even is PBO were Muslim, what would be wrong with that? I have little patience when it comes to dealing with those who refuse to think for themselves.

The heat is on. Turn it up.

I heard someone today saying everyone needs to take it to congress the way everyone did back in July with the healthcare fight. Ride them hard and continuously.

I dropped my buddy Sen. Robby Portman another email contact this morning once I saw his tweet about “prayers” for those grieving n Florida.

I called them empty words from an empty man. And I reminded him to enjoy his bloody $3 million from the NRA.

And I asked: would you change your stance if a family member was killed in a spree shooting? You know, like how you changed your stance on same-sex marriage when your son came out?

I had a thought, and I’ll have to work on articulating it into something simpler but it goes like this: People who fetish the second amendment miss the point of the amendments. The entire purpose of the constitution is to ensure our rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” The amendments, including the bill of rights, were added to implement that. The Constitution, though, is just a document made by man, and is incomplete. It cannot override our rights to the three things. If it does, then it is flawed, and should be changed.

Now, the problem with the 2nd amendment fetishists is they’re no longer free. They have allowed themselves to be chained to a part of the document that was meant to help provide a defense of our rights. They have lost the original purpose (yes, I’m ignoring the slavery angle of the 2nd) because they’ve allowed themselves to be convinced that a gun is a magic talisman that will make them superior. The problem in that is that there’s not guarantee of superiority.

Like I said, I need to work on it, because I need to come up with a better way to say someone that tied to the 2nd is no longer a free man. But is a starting thought.

He hates kids. No one has seen him interact with children in any way other than using them as a prop. Kids know a phony innately.

Yes, that was said, hours before you even asked, by pastor Rick Joyner (pictured here)

Ah, yes, the “peace through superior firepower” mantra. Tell me, how did that work out for any of the various European armies, all of whom at one time or another had the greatest concentration of firepower in the world? A million guys with guns are still going to take casualties and lose battles.

Not enough firepower?

There were police already on teh campus when the shooter started murdering former classmates.

Not enough firepower?

We’ve seen mass shooters target cops (Dallas!) and get the drop on law enforcement, even when law enforcement has superior firepower (sheer numbers, and types of weapons).

If you think the only thing that will keep people safe is arming teachers, you’re a lost cause. No teacher will ever have the skills needed to deal with an active shooter situation.

Why? Because SWAT trains daily and expends all kinds of time practicing and preparing for active shooter situations.

A teacher’s full time job is teaching and they’re never going to have the time, training, or practice to do anything other than become a statistic when they lose the initiative to a gunman who knows who/what they’re looking to target.

I think the answer is obvious; we have to get rid of the schools.

They are too big a threat to the sacred 2nd Amendment, plus they cost a lot of money and try to educate people which goes against the first pillar of the Trump philosophy:

I love the poorly educated

From now on, people will not be allowed to gather in groups of 5 or more within 500 yards of each other. This will effectively prevent mass murders by depriving the bad guy with a gun of targets. So let it be written, so let it be done.

When I was doing the radio show a few years ago, one of our guests, a local libertarian party luminary, decried how far “ahead” Oklahoma was in the application of libertarian ideology. He cited some examples and predicted confidently that Oklahoma would be the first state to abolish public schools (“government schools” in Batshit dialect). Now, five years later, they are not too far from it.

At one time I would have met ammosexual approval because I routinely carried an M1911 pistol, a .38 revolver, an M-16, a couple of nasty knives, 2 or 3 grenades, and a pack of Camel filters. Of course, this was while I was deployed in a very hot part of Vietnam where it was not batshit crazy to do so.

(Why Camel filters? Oh, I was just listing lethal stuff and reflexively included those.)
