If there’s anything that has truly amused me about Lamb’s win, it’s all the wingnuts who are trying to pretend this is a “good thing” because he’s a “conservative Democrat” and this somehow makes him the same as a far-right wingnut Republican.

Oh, this is another case of there being no set standard precisely because the sliding standard is convenient.
Denying on the basis of “religion” back doors in profiling by politics, class, race by altering the criterion of religiosity.
ETA: this kind of legislation should probably be looked at in the context of the enormous, extremely shady “Christian adoption” industry that pretty much sells kids and does nothing to protect them from mistreatment.
I watched the Miramar speech and I just thought, “This man is not competent. He’s incapable of doing his job.”
And yet, he’s the President.
So what can we do? Maybe a secular prayer:
Dear Bob Mueller!
We beseech thee to accelerate your investigation!
We all know that even if there isn’t a pee tape (which would be great!) that the Trump organization has been laundering Russian Oligarch money through his real estate holdings to get financing for his future real estate speculation.
It’s a classic influence scheme built on dirty money. And the President is absolutely beholden to that Russian cash flow, because after his bankruptcies, no western bank is going to float him money without promises from Russians with very deep pockets. (I’m looking at you, Deutsche Bank and you are fully in the cross hairs.)
He has bragged about being the King of Debt, and he has no liquidity without that Russian gelt.
So I pray that you, Mr. Mueller, will concentrate on the money, because that is always where the corruption starts.
And then, there is the 2016 election, which is, sadly, a by-product of the money trail.
I pray that you understand that once the Russians had their hooks into Trump’s companies, and once he announced his run for the Presidency, that the Russians realized what a Useful Idiot he could be if he was actually elected, and unleashed a cyber attack on our country to help make it so, and how many other clueless American Useful Idiots joined right in to make it happen.
This was tangential and fortunate for the Russians who don’t want the massive amount of money laundering they achieved using the Trump companies to ever see the light of day. I pray that you concentrate on the money, (it’s always the money) that is the root of the corruption in the Trump administration.
Amen

Sister of Charleston church shooter Dylann Roof made threat, had weapon at AC Flora
The younger sister of Dylann Roof, who murdered nine black parishioners during bible study at a Charleston church, was arrested and charged Wednesday for possessing drugs and weapons on school grounds.
Morgan Roof, 18, was charged with simple possession of marijuana and two counts of carrying weapons on school grounds, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, which confirmed her relationship to Dylann Roof.
Morgan Roof had also made a social media post on Snapchat which alarmed the student body.
In it, Morgan Roof said she hoped the students participating in the National Walkout Day, protesting gun violence, would “get shot.”
Based on what Morgan Roof posted online, she disagreed with the walkout. What struck a nerve was her comment that “we know it’s fixing to be nothing but black people walkin out anyway.”

The depth of Trump’s malignancy is revealed not merely in the fact that he reflexively lies without even bothering to research the underlying facts first, it’s that now he’s fucking bragging about it. He and his supporters are getting more and more comfortable with discarding any pretense that they’re “telling it like it is.” The lie is no longer just a shibboleth used to identify the ideological self from the other, it’s becoming an overt tool to reshape society into an Orwellian dystopia where the idea of objective truth is no longer even vaguely aspirational. They are openly pursuing a policy of aggressive dishonesty and obstreperous ignorance as an end to itself.

The Senate’s Anti-Sex Trafficking Bill Is a Disaster for Basically Everything It Touches https://t.co/PqG48ZzlEf via @jezebel #LetUsSurvive
— Kate (@KateDAdamo) March 14, 2018
“it amends Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA) of 1996, which protects online platforms from liability for their users’ speech. Without that protection, EFF argues, “social media would not exist in its current form.” Which is to say that the internet as we know it—from Twitter to the comments section at the bottom of this article—relies on online platforms having immunity for third-party content. If Section 230 is weakened, Twitter or Jezebel’s parent company could be potentially held liable for something posted in the comments.”
…
Tech experts say it will pressure online platforms—like, say Facebook—to remove all user content even possibly related to sex trafficking. That’s a massive undertaking and EFF warns that platforms will have to resort to automated filters that would flatten critical distinctions—for example, between advertisements for sex trafficking and resources for trafficking victims. In a blog post, EFF’s Elliot Harmon and Jeremy Gillula explain, “From a technical perspective, creating such a tool that doesn’t also flag a victim of trafficking telling her story or trying to find help would be extremely difficult.”
Don Lincoln, at Fermilab, has been posting a series of videos aimed at explaining Special Relativity.
His latest is on the so-called Twin Paradox:
It’s not bad, but I think he sort of punted with his punchline. It is not clear to me why this elaborate mind experiment (of observers A, B, C) are a perfect equivalent to the previously introduced animation of the twins (one going to Alpha Centauri and back.)
While I think it is good to point out that acceleration is not the cause of the time dilation (this is special relativity, not general relativity), without it we would not experience the paradox as the twins would never meet again.
This is why his thought experiment has 3 actors, not two. It takes the additional actor transferring information to another, to illustrate mathematically what is going on.
His previous videos are pretty good.
It is important to remember that many times our first look at an idea is flawed because we are, in literary terms, omniscient. We are claiming to be able to know something, say what the clocks read for all actors in one of these scenarios, that the actors themselves cannot know.
This is general is the problem of the non-intuitiveness of time-dilation.

Makes me think Amy McGrath might be able to pull off the same feat and beat Andy Barr in Ky-6, though of course I will support the Democratic nominee whether its her or popular Lexington Mayor Jim Gray, who is openly gay.

They have run the Clintons through the shredder. They pounced on Obama for Rev. Wright, Guns and God, and You Can Keep Your Doctor…but Trump…He’s Unique!
The trouble is with Trump is the perfect storm of a situation.
Hilary was supposed to win. So a lot of lack of invested voters allowed themselves to vote of Trump; It would have been a fairly normal election with an slightly (at least in the newspapers) yucky candidate would get the win, but with a hostile congress and senators to hold them back. “Normalcy” would resume.
BUT… he won with minor numbers of votes. So he got Congress and the senate and the top job in the world. This let him off, he convinced himself that he won due to the ideas, but he didn´t really get it. He was supposed to lose.

Dylann Roof’s Sister Brought Weapons To National School Walkout
White supremacist terrorist Dylann Roof may be safely behind bars where he belongs, and his equally racist sister just joined him on Wednesday when she followed in his footsteps to some degree.
Morgan Roof, 18, was arrested on Wednesday following a threatening social media post when law enforcement found weapons and a meaningless amount of weed on her.“Your walking out for the allowed time of 17min, they are letting you do this, nothing is gonna change what tf you think it’s gonna do?” Roof posted in an atrociously-spelled Snapchat story on Wednesday.
“I hope it’s a trap and y’all get shot we know it’s fixing to be nothing but black people walkin out anyway,” she continued, adding, “No offense ofc buuut.”

I think that their chances of getting gunned down in a school shooting are currently comparable to those of getting drafted, sent to Vietnam and killed in a firefight.
One can argue about why we were fighting in Vietnam, but it is hard to justify the abnormally high rate of mass shootings in the US when compared to any other civilized nation in the world.

But I got a feeling Rush and his right wing hate radio pals have nothing to worry about as long as they continue to successfully keep the brainwashed masses under control to vote Republican. But if they begin to slip in their effectiveness they will be gone.

Every government does, for one of two reasons:
1. It threatens their control.

True. Or if any did (from what I understand, the bulk of the killing was in side streets where workers had come to lend support to the students) they have learned to keep their heads down now.
I’ve read that the initial estimates of the number killed or injured were wrong, and the numbers were much, much higher. It’s not something the government is willing to discuss — even now — and we may never know the final tally. But the parents of those kids have managed to piece together enough information to suggest there were tens of thousands of students and other protesters killed by the PLA. According to a friend in a provincial government post, Deng Xiaoping’s alleged order to open fire on the students is the main reason his face will never be on Chinese currency. Too many people remember his involvement.
But you’re right. Self-censorship in China is now very normal. All of us (foreigners included) watch what we are saying and to whom, and the government has made it very clear that any anti-government rallies will be put down swiftly and efficiently.

The dollar/euro/yuan/pound/yen collapsing would do the same. Cultists believe it will replace all fiat currencies in the future, but they’re frankly nuts.

The difference, though, is that the only way the dollar will collapse is if the US collapses, as in no country left. Thus, while the US exists, the dollar will be worth something in the US. The same with those other countries. Yes, the Depression shows what can happen when a currency gets weak and inflation takes hold, but even then there are things governments can do.

what bain does, in a sense is like what happened to mortgage market thinking years ago.
at one time, the originator evaluated the borrower and his ability to make the payments back to the originator, over 20 or 30 years or whatever.
then they got the brilliant idea to originate, take the upfront fees, and sell the mortgage and the collection risk
decouple the collection risk from the original lender and their incentive changes from long term prudence and attention to merely closing the loan
derivatives make it worse, and mask the decoupled risk further

The People’s Republic of Amnesia, written by Louisa Lim, corroborates those reports. Ultimately it boils down to whether these people think they should be in control. A lot of religions emphasize that the deity is in control. But, if a person believes they should be in control, then they must maintain that control. Hence, beating their wives, buying guns.

There’s also the reality that old white guys who drop their SS checks into the offering plates or the mailbox for the TV preacher on Sundays don’t have as much money to spend on guns.

Ultimately it boils down to whether these people think they should be in control. A lot of religions emphasize that the deity is in control. But, if a person believes they should be in control, then they must maintain that control. Hence, beating their wives, buying guns.
Your word “control” and the article’s “independence” probably overlap a great deal.

Obama lost 63 House seats in 2010. How many will Trump lose?
— MATT DRUDGE (@DRUDGE) March 15, 2018
The replies are asinine at best, as people think the GOP wont lose any seats.
One of the reasons the GOP gained as much as they did in 2010 is that the Democrats ran from defending Obamacare instead of showing how it would improve things. They wobbled and weaved their way and lost the message.
Those losses also compounded into 2012 with redistricting that continues to this day.
A key difference? Trump is historically awful and has no coattails.
Obama was popular and scandal free, while Trump’s going to drag the entire GOP into Trumpworld’s Russiagate.

Jimmy Kimmel is a national treasure. The late night gift that keeps on giving. Last night, Kimmel revealed he’d gone on a shopping spree at the Trump Organization’s online store. He wanted to see how seriously the Trump family was taking the “America first” challenge Donald Trump has made to American companies, demanding more companies begin making merchandise here in the U.S.A again. Kimmel pulled one piece of merchandise after the other from the box and read each label and surprise! Not one single item was made in the u.sa. More than that, he found two items were missing the federally required country of origin designation. That was enough for the late night host to file a federal complaint against the company. If federal officials agree with Kimmel’s assertion, the Trump Organization could be fined $500,000 per offense.

The problem, for the Nixon administration, was that a huge number of others were at least equally guilty. The company commander, Captain Medina, was in the thick of it. Besides Calley’s 1st platoon, 2nd platoon (2LT Stephen Brooks) killed upward of 80 civilians, while 3rd platoon (2LT Jeffrey Lacross) killed at least 10 despite being held in reserve through most of the operation. The battalion commander, LTC Barker, observed the whole operation from his chopper and the Division commander, MG Koster, flew over while it was going on. Both claimed they saw nothing untoward. Yet, Hugh Thompson and his crew, who just happened to fly by during an unrelated mission, were so alarmed at what they saw that they landed and intervened. Nixon was not willing to punish all of them, so essentially none were punished.
I don’t want this to be an indictment of the entire US military, because it should never be a blanket statement to condemn every American servicemember. Not every Vietnam War veteran supported what happened in My Lai and were just as horrified about it as any of us here. I just believe we should hold our own accountable to the full extent of the law possible and prosecute war criminals as pariahs as they should be.
IMO, Jane Fonda wasn’t a disgrace to America; it’s Calley and his ever-growing legion of apologists who refuse to condemn cold-blooded murder.

I disagree by half. I’d say things like My Lai had a lot to do with why the soldiers were not welcome. At least with the younger people at the time.
Maybe the older war supporters were disappointed with the outcome, but the whole idea of being in Vietnam in the first place upset many of the people that protested.
The sad thing was even most of the soldiers didn’t deserve it. So many were caught up in the draft, it wasn’t their war either.
What a sad affair that all was. We didn’t seem to learn much from it either.

Same here if it’s a gofundme. Paypal compromised my debit card twice. Was able to block purchases only because my credit union flagged them as suspicious and called me about them. Having to have your card reissued is a pain.

Since tRump warned Mueller not to dig around in his personal finances, I wonder if this will push him to ordering Sessions to fire him. Could be the start of a Saturday Night massacre.
And the protestors would hit the streets within an hour of doing so. It could also be the start of a nationwide strike.

The support for Calley during and after his trial was tumultuous. Then-Governor Jimmy Carter declared “American Fighting Man’s Day” in protest against Calley’s initial (bullshit) sentence. Alabama governor George Wallace visited Calley in the stockade. A sappy song called The Battle Hymn of Lt. Calley sold nearly 2 million copies. His subsequent marriage to the daughter of a prominent jeweler was THE social event of the season for (white) Atlanta.
Calley also had some support from the anti-war movement, which believed he was being scapegoated while the big fish got away.
Even during the cover-up, some in the army apparently believed that General Koster was primarily to blame. Though not court martialed, he was reduced in rank, reprimanded and assigned to a comparatively minor post, all with little or no publicity.
Calley and twenty-three other soldiers testified that the night before the operation, Medina had issued orders to “kill everyone in the village.” At his own court martial, Medina claimed he meant only VC combatants. This is a pretty serious distinction to miss, and Medina did nothing to “clarify” matters the next day while the massacre was in progress. He was acquitted.
Good grief. Another AFRICOM cover-up. https://t.co/iCBBKZKhnO

But we’re just finding out about this. The article says it was “in recent weeks”.
The breadth of the subpoena was not clear, nor was it clear why Mr. Mueller issued it instead of simply asking for the documents from the company, an umbrella organization that oversees Mr. Trump’s business ventures. In the subpoena, delivered in recent weeks, Mr. Mueller ordered the Trump Organization to hand over all documents related to Russia and other topics he is investigating, the people said.

Reasons Mueller would issue a subpoena rather than ask nicely:

Conservatives cannot regain the frame of the message. They will do absolutely anything to shut down the statement from students across the nation.
On the other hand, death is a marvelous motivator. As far as the students are concerned, there is literally nothing a conservative authoritarian or the NRA can do to them. Dying in a classroom is permanent, and unless conservatives want to kill students, they are prepared to go all the way.
This has the feeling that the NRA’s power has been broken, and the politicians they own with it.
