Chaos Watch! Head of Trump’s Legal Team Quits Because Trump Won’t Follow His Advice

A fool for a client
Politics • Views: 32,199

Today in White House Chaos Watch, Trump’s lead lawyer for the Robert Mueller investigation, John Dowd, bailed out because his former client is a reckless egomaniacal idiot who refuses to follow legal advice.

He didn’t say it quite like that, of course.

Mr. Dowd, who took over the president’s legal team last summer and considered leaving several times, ultimately concluded that Mr. Trump was ignoring his advice, a person briefed on the matter said.

“I love the president,” Mr. Dowd said in a telephone interview. “I wish him the best of luck. I think he has a really good case.”

Brave Mr. Dowd.

Bravely bold Sir Robin
Rode forth from Camelot.
He was not afraid to die,
Oh brave Sir Robin.
He was not at all afraid
To be killed in nasty ways.
Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Robin.
He was not in the least bit scared
To be mashed into a pulp.
Or to have his eyes gouged out,
And his elbows broken.
To have his kneecaps split
And his body burned away,
And his limbs all hacked and mangled
Brave Sir Robin.

from the various posts at the end of downstairs regarding mississippi

from this morning’s electoral-vote.com

At the start of this election cycle, all but one of the incumbent Republican senators looked safe. Now four seats are in play, namely Nevada (Dean Heller), Arizona (Jeff Flake), Tennessee (Bob Corker), and Mississippi (Thad Cochran). And if John McCain steps down, another Arizona seat could join the list. If the Democrats can hold all of their own seats and win two of these, they will take control of the Senate. What originally looked impossible is now merely very difficult. When Trump was elected, people had certain expectations of what he would do (e.g., try to build a wall on the Mexican border). What absolutely no one expected was that he would manage to turn Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi into swing states.

i used restraint and just added some itals
i wanted to go overboard and bold the whole thing.

re: #4 Big Beautiful Door

Probably. Maybe Trump’s trying to enact the scenario where he goes into Mueller’s panel meeting, answers “I don’t know” or “I don’t remember” to a couple of hundred questions, then goes back to the WH to fire Mueller, and disband his investigation on the grounds that “all questions have been answered”.
And then rely on the Congressional GOP to provide cover for him: which of course, they are likely to do: huffy tough-talk from the likes of McCain, Graham or Corker completely notwithstanding.

America as a theocracy-in-waiting:

Dems Need Viable Candidates to Catch Blue Wave

[…]

Lt. Gov. Randy McNally called Jordan the “most dangerous candidate” he’s seen in 40 years of politics, not because she’s an atheist but because she tries to help people get over religion. Tennessee Republican Party Chairman Scott Golden pounced as well, trying to use Jordan to attack Democratic gubernatorial candidates Karl Dean and Rep. Craig Fitzhugh.

The party sent out mailers with quotes from Jordan saying stuff like “God is such a bad God. The sacrifice of Jesus is such a bad concept,” etc., in addition to one showing Jordan officiating a marriage between two men. The men featured in the ad have since threatened to file a lawsuit against Republicans for violating their privacy.

[…]

“It was already a tough district, and coupled with the fact she was an atheist, she didn’t have a prayer,” Syler says.

[…]

Blackburn comments at a Reeves rally: “If you want to make certain that you have got a state senator that understands the difference between evolution and creationism and is going to stand with you in those conservative Tennessee values, you want Shane Reeves.”

Trump on 2018 GOP: “They say a lot of [my popularity] is not transferable. They all like me, they all vote for me, and they say I’m going to great in 2020. But I hope it is transferable.”

A lot of Trump supporters are people who simply hate politicians and politics as usual. The GOP made a pact with the devil to use DT to motivate the base to get out and carry the key EC states. They won, but now the Devil is about to call in his end of the bargain.

Note the same religious wingnuts screaming about atheists taking their right to mark public land with their religious symbols forced religious speech into Pat Tillman’s funeral (including Sen. John McCain).

However, responding to religious overtones at the funeral by Maria Shriver and John McCain, his youngest brother, Richard, asserted that “Just make no mistake, he’d want me to say this: He’s not with God, he’s fucking dead—he’s not religious.”

Also the very term “Deep State” comes from Turkey - derin devlet is the Turkish term. In the pairs competition, they earlier promoted the notion that the Obama administration was threatening witnesses in the endless Benghazi investigation…Now we have the Whitewater Undead staggering out of the ancient crypts of cable news and back abroad in our politics again. Somebody should ring the green rooms with garlic.

esquire.com

I well remember Victoria being even more odious than Joe. Ugh

Maybe they’ll call for a fourth or fifth special counsel to investigate Whitewater, Chappaquiddick, the Kennedy assassination and the Democrat coverup of the Real Watergate Crimes.

re: #84 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

It is just a buzzword invented by RW pundits to explain why the entire US government did not just cash in its entire sense of ethics and abandon its established procedures in order to cooperate with Trump’s sense of how to run things there.

Certainly in its American incarnation.

There was something of a “deep state” in Turkey back in the day, albeit highly organized and institutionalized. It was part of Gladio - special forces known as the Special Warfare Department (Özel Harp Dairesi, or ÖHD). Basically it was designed as a stay-behind resistance force in the event of a Soviet invasion.

By all accounts, they became quite a pain in the ass and were mixed up in all sorts of shady business, like alleged involvement with the Grey Wolves, a notoriously fanatical Turkish nationalist group.

We don’t have to send an assassin back in time to get rid of Trump. We just have to sent him back 46 years to talk to himself. And maybe 25 year old Trump will look at 71 year old Trump and have a “Come To Jesus” moment, seeing what a lardassed buffoon he becomes. Or 2018 Trump might see what he used to be, realize what he’s become, and give up.

Sadly, I think the REAL exchange would go like this:

T@71: Hey, Kid!
T@25: Jesus! Who is this fat old man with the silly haircut?
T@71: I’m you, but in 50 years!
T@25: Jesus! I get that fat?
T@71: Hey, don’t worry about that! I’m still banging porn stars and Playboy centerfolds!
T@25: Yeah, but…I dunno….
T@71: Listen! This is important! Whatever you do, DON’T run for President! The job’s no fun and everybody hates you.
T@25: Wait - I become President? COOL!!!
T@71: Uh, no - not so much.
T@25: Wow, President Trump! Who’d have thought that could happen?
T@71: No, you’re not listening! I said DON’T DO IT!
T@25: Does my Dad finally love me?
T@71: I dunno. He’s already dead.
T@25: EVEN BETTER!!!

How many self-driving cars in Arizona versus total cars?
Google has already had a number of accidents with self-driving cars.

I will not be ashamed of looking sideways at technology that is not yet ready (the cars are sold on the idea that these things won’t happen). See also Facebook.

And the woman who was killed in Arizona could have been detected if that test had been done on a track (without using a real person). She died so Uber could make a profit, nothing more.

The whole point of self driving cars is so that we can be distracted while in the car.

Also, I am not a fan of self driving cars, but I think that’s because I’m part of that dying breed that actually enjoys driving. Nothing better than a six speed V-8, a full tank of gas, and a road with just enough curves to keep your attention.

Generally it’s a bad idea to make decisions based on an N of 1. I’d also point out that autonomous vehicles are extensively tested on tracks, but that testing only goes so far, and they’re trying to build vehicles that will be used in the real world, not on test tracks.

But I’d observe that my experience with robotics has been that mostly, they fall short of what you expect, because they humans they’re supposed to replace do a whole lot more in the course of whatever task is being automated than they realize.

At some point all technology advances with motor vehicles gets put out on to public highways for real world testing.

For instance, cruise control, seat belts, crumple zones, airbags (front, passenger, side, etc.), lane divergence warnings (Eyesight on Subarus for instance), adaptive cruise control, lane correction (active steering), self parking, etc.

The thing is that we still have to figure out as a society who is responsible for when things go wrong with the tech: the automaker when the tech fails to prevent an accident, or the human “driver” who was at the “wheel”. You know that the manufacturers are going to want it to be on the owner of the vehicle, because that opens up huge liability over time to the manufacturer.

From the interwebs:

In 2015, 5,376 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the United States. This averages to one crash-related pedestrian death every 1.6 hours.Aug 9, 2017

The whole point of self driving cars is so that we can be distracted while in the car.

It could actually mean that more cars can get on the road at the same time and drive more efficiently - think of the LIE or Santa Monica Freeway during rush hour with the stop/go traffic and a more efficient method where cars are all moving more smoothly because everyone is networked and the vehicle systems are aware of other vehicles and adapt to their speeds as well.

That it can also mean drivers can text and do other stuff (distracted from actually driving) is also a recognition that they’re already doing that and we want to get the driver out of that element, making the road safer for those around them.

Trump is a lying, secretive, dumbass bastard. His tweets indicate that there were discussions with others about banning transgender persons from serving in our military.
From the article you cited: “In a series of tweets penned and sent during the early morning hours of July 26, Trump proclaimed: “After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you”

The Dotard’s own tweet suggests there were meetings on the matter, and if there were meetings, there should be a paper trail or some sort of record, either audio or written. Good action on the part of Judge Pechman in citing his tweet as evidence to reject the WH claim that it has no information it can submit to the court. I’d say they’re more independent of each other. It is true that focusing on driving, WHILE DRIVING is difficult enough, so focusing on driving while something else is driving is even more difficult.

It is also true that 6000 pedestrians are killed by non-autonomous vehicles every year, so clearly it’s not even close to possible for human drivers to always avoid hitting darting pedestrians.

Well, my son, during the nine months we spent driving with his learner’s permit, learned to drive this one intersection, properly watching traffic and turning. It’s only a few blocks from home, so he did it a lot. Yet, a little over a month ago, he didn’t see a car in the far left lane and tried to merge with it. Luckily there was only a little damage.

And what about the nearly 5500 pedestrians that die each year due to humans in cars? Weren’t they tested?

I left my church when my dad passed in 2001 and haven’t been back. I do attend services at other churches, but I’m no longer tied to one church because I no longer have much, if any, respect for organized religious congregations.

Well, hopefully I won’t have to worry about it too terribly soon, but though I’m religious and believe in God, I don’t believe in an afterlife. So for me the funeral is a wash. However for those friends and family that want/need it, I’ll have my church do a nice traditional high church Episcopalian mass of smells & bells with the classic language later at graveside of “earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust,” because that will be for them, not me.

If I have made a little money by then, I’ll pay for a small orchestra & choir to perform Faure’s Requim as the service music ;) No one would forget that one any time soon.

I have never even been a fan of cruise control. I remember when it first became popular and friends would drive with their legs crossed up on the seat. Drove me crazy (actually, drove me to be the driver.)

“How many self-driving cars in Arizona versus total cars?”

I’m glad you included this is your comment, AM, because I was reading on the Phoenix New Times site early this morning that a major reason driver-less car companies chose Arizona to test their cars is because Doug Ducey [R] made it easier for them by issuing lax technology rules. Based on my observation of right-wing pols, I’m thinking Ducey thought the lax rules would create some kind of business opportunity in Arizona, or he knows someone connected with companies that produce these cars.

“Uber is one of several companies testing semi-autonomous vehicles on the roads of Arizona, and the company said it came to the state specifically because of lax rules on the technology created by Governor Doug Ducey.”

Fallacy of big/small numbers. How many driverless cars are on the road versus how many total cars? Google’s cars have been in a number of accidents too (though none fatal).

The point of these cars is they are sold to the public as “safer.”

You know what? If a corporation is selling an idea (Facebook will keep your data private), it is up to them to sell the idea to me, and not up to me to accept it uncritically.

Heh. Just another unexpected hazard of Life In The Big City. I saw that happen once on the East Side: I was walking down Second Avenue when I heard a bang behind me: I turned to see a cloud of smoke rising from a manhole: and that big iron lid spinning in the street like a flipped quarter. Fascinating enough, til I recalled I had walked over that manhole about ten seconds earlier…..

Generally it’s a bad idea to make decisions based on an N of 1. I’d also point out that autonomous vehicles are extensively tested on tracks, but that testing only goes so far, and they’re trying to build vehicles that will be used in the real world, not on test tracks.

snip

They’re also being tested on roads and in cities. Last year I stayed in a hotel in NY where some test drivers were staying—they were travelling to various metro areas to test the cars in urban traffic. They had tested in Boston, Pittsburgh, Detroit and were doing several weeks in NYC.

Not saying I’m a fan of self-driving cars, but I know they are being tested in real-world situations.

The bigger issue in Wisconsin is the Spring General Election coming up in April when we have a chance to get someone sane on the Supreme Court. That will help though I doubt it’s going to be enough to prevent the rubber stamps from winning the appeal for Scooter.

I don’t want to watch the video and haven’t read every article out there but here was the first I saw with a reaction from local police:

Police chief: Uber self-driving car “likely” not at fault in fatal crash

After viewing video captured by the Uber vehicle, Moir concluded that “it’s very clear it would have been difficult to avoid this collision in any kind of mode (autonomous or human-driven) based on how she came from the shadows right into the roadway.”

Of course there will be further investigation and review of what the car could have done and hopefully, it there is a way for it to have recognized what was happening and prevented the collision the knowledge will quickly make its way into use across all the different self-driving software suites.

For so dangerous a feat as flying 10,000 feet in the air with only a couple mechanical engines to keep you up, very few planes fall from the sky. One reason is that when one does, people take very seriously the job of finding out why and looking for ways to keep it from happening again.

Hopefully the same process will be applied here.

I always “loved” it when we had to have our road marches take us onto highways and even sometimes autobahns while I was active duty in 83-84. A M-60A3 can hit 30mph going downhill with a hurricane tailwind so there were always cars in and out of our line of vehicles and sometimes the cars lost. Badly. 54 tons vs 1 or 2 tons is not pretty.

I had cruise control in my manual transmission Nissan. The interesting thing about it is because the cruise control basically works on engine revolutions, I could use the cruise at 5 mph for example in first gear.

I never had trouble with the cruise control in the car.

I have a simple test for how someone will end up as a driver.

A. Is it a task, chore, a necessity and you don’t really like cars and don’t care to learn about them? You don’t like to drive and will let someone else do it if available.

B. You are a damn full-on car junkie. You eat and sleep cars. You like racing. You like vehicle dynamics and just love to feel the car on the road and its balance in your butt. You love to drive.

A. Probably not going to be a good driver.

B. Probably going to be a good driver.

About 10 years ago when I was driving home from work after 10 PM at night, a bicyclist on the cross street went through a red light; I was paying attention and slammed on the brakes. No harm to anyone though I had some choice words for the cyclist (said to myself only). Certainly I had no previous thought someone would be riding a bike on that street during the day, let alone at night. If you are actually driving a vehicle, you may pay far more attention to the road and what’s around you than when you are, in effect, a passenger in driverless vehicle.

I suspect the non-driver is the one who’s going to be thrown under a bus. By Uber.

It still goes back to the issue that these cars are sold on the idea that these sorts of things wouldn’t happen. No sound, so we can’t tell if the car horn honked to warn her as she entered the car’s path. Presumably, the car’s sensors should be able to detect a full-sized human being walking a bicycle across the road.

The car didn’t swerve, and it doesn’t appear to brake.

We-e-ell… they’re not really being sold, and the claim is not that they don’t happen, but rather that they’ll happen less often.

Are we watching the same video? Because to me it seems the first time she becomes visible, she’s already squarely in the path of the vehicle. Not sure what a horn would do apart from making her freeze, right there in front of the car.

Well if he was monitoring onboard system diagnostics, Uber will still be fucked. Either way, the NTSB will more than likely be investigating this incident. Until then, all we are doing is just speculating as what actually happened. Monday morning quarterbacking if you will.

That was also the year I took my kids shopping to buy Hallowe’en candy in October (Hallowe’en has started to catch on as a thing here) and had to walk past the Christmas chocolate displays.

“Today’s atheists are bullies — and they are doing their best to intimidate the rest of us into silence (FOX News Channel)”

The biggest bullies in America at the present time are fundamentalist/evangelical “c”hristians. Why? Because they’re willing to lie, cheat, steal, commit atrocities, ignore the rule of law, etc. to maintain religious and political power, and when things go wrong/bad for them, they’re always blaming someone else. For many of them, Christianity is simply the vehicle they use to suppress and control others. I don’t have a problem with atheists, but I do have a huge problem with “c”hristians. The only thing I want from them is to leave me the hell alone. What they believe and the way they live is different from what I believe and the way I live.

This is a hell of an opening refrain:

There’s no polite way to say it. Atheists today are the most arrogant, ignorant and dangerous people on earth.

But the list of grievances is just amazing:

To cite a few recent examples: Last December, the group American Atheists launched its annual billboard campaign with the slogan: “Just Skip Church — It’s All Fake News.” In February, the American Humanist Association became furious when President Trump had the gall to mention Christianity and Jesus Christ without also mentioning atheists—at the National Prayer Breakfast! (How dare he!) And just this month, the Freedom From Religion Foundation raised holy hell because the Reverend Billy Graham was laid out in state in the Capitol Rotunda before his burial.

Billboards and free speech are apparently a threat to religion. The National Prayer Breakfast is a dumb thing, but I don’t remember anyone being outraged - just pointing out that past presidents were usually good enough to acknowledge non-believers. And Billy Graham laying in honor at the Capitol is rightly a damn shame.

Cruise control will automatically disengage the second you tap the brakes or depress the clutch and you can’t really “stall” the engine at 75 mph because the wheel shaft is spinning way too fast. The worst that can happen at that speed is over revving the engine by shifting to a lower gear.

The whole article is projection and a persecution complex of the first order. The last two paragraphs read like the same sort of stochastic terrorism levied against Dr. Tiller:

And that’s exactly what modern-day atheists are—bullies; bullies who are doing their best to intimidate the rest of us into silence.

Well, we can’t allow that to happen. As I say in my book, “Inside the Atheist Mind: Unmasking the Religion of Those Who Say There is No God,” there is only one way to deal with bullies, even in this politically correct world—and that is to stand up to them and fight them; to fight them in a bold, aggressive, and fearless way, and to fight them now.

BREAKING - New York City, New York - The Hateful Atheists have opened a new front in the War on Christmas. With no warning or provocation, the Hateful Atheists attacked the Good Christian Warriors in the midst of Lent. Some have taken to calling it the Battle of Easter among the Good Christian Warriors, all of whom are prepared to fight. The Hateful Atheists have not claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Good Christian Warriors spokesperson has assured reporters that the Hateful Atheists are responsible for the degredation of the Easter Bunny, Easter Eggs, and other completely and entirely Christian symbols. When reached for comment the Hateful Atheists spokerdeamon said only that the bunny and egg iconography predate Christianity and have been used the world over for spring and fertility festivals. We are researching this blasphemy but can assure you that, like the Christmas Tree and Santa Claus, nobody ever used these items for holidays before the Good Christian Warriors.

I’ll bet I might have avoided her (a slight swerve would have done it). I can’t say for others, I have fast reactions. (I halted and swerved when a mountain lion ran in front of us coming home from Cheyenne last night, and a mountain lion is significantly smaller than a woman with a bicycle.)

But didn’t you also hit a deer not too long ago? Shit can come out of nowhere fast and safety isn’t measured well at the individual level. On aggregate self driving cars are already much safer than the typical human driven vehicle and AI capability is progressing exponentially.

But it is an issue. The village next south of mine has on it’s town owned billboards in both directions on US-385 a praise to “the risen Lord.”

I’ve contacted the village clerk to remind them that using the town boards with the town seal to endorse religion could get a village of three hundred people sued.

The assertion of religious privilege in the public square must be opposed every time it happens, or religious freedom dies. (The same goes for religious propaganda from FOX News.)

As I mentioned above, the deer ran straight into my car. It also lived (though may have died later), and I was traveling a lot faster.

We’re back to the fallacy of big/small numbers again. Google and Uber have had numerous accidents with self-driving cars on public roads, though there are very few self-driving cars and miles driven.

As for now, they have not proved as safe as driver-directed cars. Moreover, they are marketing them to make a profit. It is not up to me to accept their claims of safety, it is up to them to show them. (Basically, the argument shifts the burden of proof to me to accept their claims of safety.)

I see no reason to believe anything a rapey, sexually-assaulting corporate culture that disobeys laws in states and municipalities unless they provide evidence. Their marketing campaign is not evidence.

Former US Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton is being considered to replace H.R. McMaster as White House national security adviser. I still love the way that scene (Paulie’s murder) is filmed and edited. Clemenza gets out, the camera goes wide, and in the background as Paulie is shot, you can see the Statue of Liberty. It’s fucking beautiful.

Speaking of James Caan, I bought and saw for the first time “Thief” last night. 1981, Michael Mann’s first film. Caan is great in it, but it’s the worst fake blood I’ve ever seen in a movie in my life. I was laughing so hard.

From a purely artistic view I love the Ellis Island scene. My moms grandparents arrived at the same time. Slavic not Sicilian but seeing all those people and among them little Vito Andolini.

“… According to the report, police seized items including an AR-15 rifle, .45-caliber pistol, more than 350 rounds of ammunition, and a black tactical vest with ballistic armor from White’s Ford Explorer in the area of Columbia Road and Massachusetts Avenue.

An officer asked White “why he was possessing this arsenal while operating in the City of Boston,” the report said. “Suspect White responded with a lengthy response which included that he was concerned with ‘jihadists on the highway’ and that he has ties to [the] US Military; which [is] currently conducting ‘tests’ on how to address the situation of terrorists on [the] highways.”

In a chilling aside, White also told police that terrorists could trap motorists in a matter of minutes.

“White went on to say that ‘It only takes 7 minutes to block off the highway exits’ and he needed to [be] prepared for such an event,” the report said. …”

But a revelation by the show’s host, Joe Scarborough, is just plain terrifying. “Several months ago, a foreign policy expert on the international level went to advise Donald Trump. And three times he asked about the use of nuclear weapons,” Joe Scarborough said. “Three times [Trump] asked at one point if we had them why can’t we use them.”

Hopefully Mueller has some big shoes to drop soon.

Not sure it would matter? Can Mueller bring charges against the POTUS? Would it be better for Mueller to wait until the next Congress to release his findings? This current Congress will do nothing against Trump no matter what the findings.

I’m wondering if he acquired that SBR legally, and paid his $15 for the required NFA tax stamp, or he bought it as a pistol and modified it illegally.

I’m guessing the latter, his sort of madness certainly wouldn’t see registering his weapon with the Feds as a reasonable option

The whole issue of whether using nuclear weapons in the context of the law is a red herring.

The question is whether the military would carry out such an order contravening its own doctrine, the Law of Armed Conflict.

The President can give the order to launch one or more nuke, but it’s the Pentagon that carries that order out. Neither scenario would be good:

a) The military launches a nuke (or many) and either the whole world dies or the USA becomes a pariah state.
b) The military refuses the order, in which case we have an effective military coup. (It would not be beyond the realm of possibility in that case that the military removes elements - or all - of the civilian government.)
