Chaos Watch! Head of Trump’s Legal Team Quits Because Trump Won’t Follow His Advice

Today in White House Chaos Watch, Trump’s lead lawyer for the Robert Mueller investigation, John Dowd, bailed out because his former client is a reckless egomaniacal idiot who refuses to follow legal advice.

He didn’t say it quite like that, of course.

Mr. Dowd, who took over the president’s legal team last summer and considered leaving several times, ultimately concluded that Mr. Trump was ignoring his advice, a person briefed on the matter said.

“I love the president,” Mr. Dowd said in a telephone interview. “I wish him the best of luck. I think he has a really good case.”

At the start of this election cycle, all but one of the incumbent Republican senators looked safe. Now four seats are in play, namely Nevada (Dean Heller), Arizona (Jeff Flake), Tennessee (Bob Corker), and Mississippi (Thad Cochran). And if John McCain steps down, another Arizona seat could join the list. If the Democrats can hold all of their own seats and win two of these, they will take control of the Senate. What originally looked impossible is now merely very difficult. When Trump was elected, people had certain expectations of what he would do (e.g., try to build a wall on the Mexican border). What absolutely no one expected was that he would manage to turn Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi into swing states.

Probably. Maybe Trump’s trying to enact the scenario where he goes into Mueller’s panel meeting, answers “I don’t know” or “I don’t remember” to a couple of hundred questions, then goes back to the WH to fire Mueller, and disband his investigation on the grounds that “all questions have been answered”.
And then rely on the Congressional GOP to provide cover for him: which of course, they are likely to do: huffy tough-talk from the likes of McCain, Graham or Corker completely notwithstanding.

I’m aware of the intellectual property issues, on a personal level. About 2002, a new co-worker and a newish manager took my employer’s only working prototype of a new scientific instrument to a trade show in China. They returned in about 10 days, but China kept our prototype for over 6 months.

Google has already had a number of accidents with self-driving cars.

I will not be ashamed of looking sideways at technology that is not yet ready (the cars are sold on the idea that these things won’t happen). See also Facebook.

And the woman who was killed in Arizona could have been detected if that test had been done on a track (without using a real person). She died so Uber could make a profit, nothing more.

I am opposed to using the public highways as a test-bed.

For instance, cruise control, seat belts, crumple zones, airbags (front, passenger, side, etc.), lane divergence warnings (Eyesight on Subarus for instance), adaptive cruise control, lane correction (active steering), self parking, etc.

The thing is that we still have to figure out as a society who is responsible for when things go wrong with the tech: the automaker when the tech fails to prevent an accident, or the human “driver” who was at the “wheel”. You know that the manufacturers are going to want it to be on the owner of the vehicle, because that opens up huge liability over time to the manufacturer.

It could actually mean that more cars can get on the road at the same time and drive more efficiently - think of the LIE or Santa Monica Freeway during rush hour with the stop/go traffic and a more efficient method where cars are all moving more smoothly because everyone is networked and the vehicle systems are aware of other vehicles and adapt to their speeds as well.

That it can also mean drivers can text and do other stuff (distracted from actually driving) is also a recognition that they’re already doing that and we want to get the driver out of that element, making the road safer for those around them.

I’d say they’re more independent of each other. It is true that focusing on driving, WHILE DRIVING is difficult enough, so focusing on driving while something else is driving is even more difficult.

It is also true that 6000 pedestrians are killed by non-autonomous vehicles every year, so clearly it’s not even close to possible for human drivers to always avoid hitting darting pedestrians.

I just watched the video. The pedestrian is not visible until a fraction of a second before impact. No lights, no reflectors, crossing a 40mph road in the dark, nowhere near a pedestrian crossing (indeed, that section of road has a big median strip where the accident happened).

I’m not willing to conclude that a human driver would have done any better or differently from the autonomous vehicle.

Well, my son, during the nine months we spent driving with his learner’s permit, learned to drive this one intersection, properly watching traffic and turning. It’s only a few blocks from home, so he did it a lot. Yet, a little over a month ago, he didn’t see a car in the far left lane and tried to merge with it. Luckily there was only a little damage.

I do attend services at other churches, but I’m no longer tied to one church because I no longer have much, if any, respect for organized religious congregations.

Well, hopefully I won’t have to worry about it too terribly soon, but though I’m religious and believe in God, I don’t believe in an afterlife. So for me the funeral is a wash. However for those friends and family that want/need it, I’ll have my church do a nice traditional high church Episcopalian mass of smells & bells with the classic language later at graveside of “earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust,” because that will be for them, not me.

If I have made a little money by then, I’ll pay for a small orchestra & choir to perform Faure’s Requim as the service music ;) No one would forget that one any time soon.

Police chief: Uber self-driving car “likely” not at fault in fatal crash

After viewing video captured by the Uber vehicle, Moir concluded that “it’s very clear it would have been difficult to avoid this collision in any kind of mode (autonomous or human-driven) based on how she came from the shadows right into the roadway.”

Of course there will be further investigation and review of what the car could have done and hopefully, it there is a way for it to have recognized what was happening and prevented the collision the knowledge will quickly make its way into use across all the different self-driving software suites.

For so dangerous a feat as flying 10,000 feet in the air with only a couple mechanical engines to keep you up, very few planes fall from the sky. One reason is that when one does, people take very seriously the job of finding out why and looking for ways to keep it from happening again.

Hopefully the same process will be applied here.

I always “loved” it when we had to have our road marches take us onto highways and even sometimes autobahns while I was active duty in 83-84. A M-60A3 can hit 30mph going downhill with a hurricane tailwind so there were always cars in and out of our line of vehicles and sometimes the cars lost. Badly. 54 tons vs 1 or 2 tons is not pretty.

It still goes back to the issue that these cars are sold on the idea that these sorts of things wouldn’t happen. No sound, so we can’t tell if the car horn honked to warn her as she entered the car’s path. Presumably, the car’s sensors should be able to detect a full-sized human being walking a bicycle across the road.

The car didn’t swerve, and it doesn’t appear to brake.

I had cruise control in my manual transmission Nissan. The interesting thing about it is because the cruise control basically works on engine revolutions, I could use the cruise at 5 mph for example in first gear.

I never had trouble with the cruise control in the car.

Interesting. I don’t know how all the sensors work. But in the video I noticed she was crossing right at the point where the light seem to go from light to dark. I don’t know if that was street lighting, a tree or building causing the dark area or what. But I wonder if that light change messed up the sensors.

A. Is it a task, chore, a necessity and you don’t really like cars and don’t care to learn about them? You don’t like to drive and will let someone else do it if available.

B. You are a damn full-on car junkie. You eat and sleep cars. You like racing. You like vehicle dynamics and just love to feel the car on the road and its balance in your butt. You love to drive.

A. Probably not going to be a good driver.

B. Probably going to be a good driver.

It usually works out pretty good as an indicator.

About 10 years ago when I was driving home from work after 10 PM at night, a bicyclist on the cross street went through a red light; I was paying attention and slammed on the brakes. No harm to anyone though I had some choice words for the cyclist (said to myself only). Certainly I had no previous thought someone would be riding a bike on that street during the day, let alone at night. If you are actually driving a vehicle, you may pay far more attention to the road and what’s around you than when you are, in effect, a passenger in driverless vehicle.

The car didn’t swerve, and it doesn’t appear to brake.

We-e-ell… they’re not really being sold, and the claim is not that they don’t happen, but rather that they’ll happen less often.

Are we watching the same video? Because to me it seems the first time she becomes visible, she’s already squarely in the path of the vehicle. Not sure what a horn would do apart from making her freeze, right there in front of the car.

Since he lost the backing of billionaire Robert Mercer, I’m wondering how he plans to fund his movement to accomplish his “pillars.” I would think other wealthy Americans would be hesitant to invest in any of his ventures/ideas at this point. It’s just a mental thing on my side. The only couple of times I’ve stalled were when I was at a stop and would take my foot off the clutch before giving it gas. But the thought of that happening at 75 mph is enough for me to not bother with it.

Turning off Cruise Control is really just like lifting your foot off the gas. Trust me. Try it.

But the list of grievances is just amazing:

To cite a few recent examples: Last December, the group American Atheists launched its annual billboard campaign with the slogan: “Just Skip Church — It’s All Fake News.” In February, the American Humanist Association became furious when President Trump had the gall to mention Christianity and Jesus Christ without also mentioning atheists—at the National Prayer Breakfast! (How dare he!) And just this month, the Freedom From Religion Foundation raised holy hell because the Reverend Billy Graham was laid out in state in the Capitol Rotunda before his burial.

Billboards and free speech are apparently a threat to religion. The National Prayer Breakfast is a dumb thing, but I don’t remember anyone being outraged - just pointing out that past presidents were usually good enough to acknowledge non-believers. And Billy Graham laying in honor at the Capitol is rightly a damn shame.

Cruise control will automatically disengage the second you tap the brakes or depress the clutch and you can’t really “stall” the engine at 75 mph because the wheel shaft is spinning way too fast. The worst that can happen at that speed is over revving the engine by shifting to a lower gear.

Speaking of cruise control the traffic aware cruise control mode in the Tesla cars is really nice. I used it during part of my turn on the test drive and it automatically maintained a safe gap between me and the car in front of me. It also saw the asshole coming up on my left preparing to cut hard in front of me and braked smoothly before I knew what the fuck was happening.

I’ve contacted the village clerk to remind them that using the town boards with the town seal to endorse religion could get a village of three hundred people sued.

The assertion of religious privilege in the public square must be opposed every time it happens, or religious freedom dies. (The same goes for religious propaganda from FOX News.)

As I mentioned above, the deer ran straight into my car. It also lived (though may have died later), and I was traveling a lot faster.

We’re back to the fallacy of big/small numbers again. Google and Uber have had numerous accidents with self-driving cars on public roads, though there are very few self-driving cars and miles driven.

As for now, they have not proved as safe as driver-directed cars. Moreover, they are marketing them to make a profit. It is not up to me to accept their claims of safety, it is up to them to show them. (Basically, the argument shifts the burden of proof to me to accept their claims of safety.)

I see no reason to believe anything a rapey, sexually-assaulting corporate culture that disobeys laws in states and municipalities unless they provide evidence. Their marketing campaign is not evidence.

Speaking of James Caan, I bought and saw for the first time “Thief” last night. 1981, Michael Mann’s first film. Caan is great in it, but it’s the worst fake blood I’ve ever seen in a movie in my life. I was laughing so hard.

I still love the way that scene (Paulie’s murder) is filmed and edited. Clemenza gets out, the camera goes wide, and in the background as Paulie is shot, you can see the Statue of Liberty. It’s fucking beautiful.

From a purely artistic view I love the Ellis Island scene. My moms grandparents arrived at the same time. Slavic not Sicilian but seeing all those people and among them little Vito Andolini.

In a chilling aside, White also told police that terrorists could trap motorists in a matter of minutes.

Not sure it would matter? Can Mueller bring charges against the POTUS? Would it be better for Mueller to wait until the next Congress to release his findings? This current Congress will do nothing against Trump no matter what the findings.

I’m wondering if he acquired that SBR legally, and paid his $15 for the required NFA tax stamp, or he bought it as a pistol and modified it illegally.

I’m guessing the latter, his sort of madness certainly wouldn’t see registering his weapon with the Feds as a reasonable option

The whole issue of whether using nuclear weapons in the context of the law is a red herring.

The question is whether the military would carry out such an order contravening its own doctrine, the Law of Armed Conflict.

The President can give the order to launch one or more nuke, but it’s the Pentagon that carries that order out. Neither scenario would be good:

a) The military launches a nuke (or many) and either the whole world dies or the USA becomes a pariah state.
b) The military refuses the order, in which case we have an effective military coup. (It would not be beyond the realm of possibility in that case that the military removes elements - or all - of the civilian government.)

Agreed. I’ve seen DeNiro’s Sonny. Too crazy. Caan’s Sonny had an excellent subtlety to him that DeNiro’s screen test seemed to lack.
