I’m old enough to remember when the United States invoked Article 5 of the NATO treaty in the aftermath of the worst terrorist atrocity in American history.
And now, less than two decades later, our Secretary of State replies with, “I’m not going to get into hypotheticals” when asked if America would come to the aid of our NATO allies should they be in their hour of need.
I can only assume that Vladimir Putin will be sleeping quite well for the foreseeable future.

McConnell’s smirk is showing though. He’s savvy enough to know how to deflect blame on to others. He merely allowed the vote - and he can’t help it if the outcome is not helping Trump or his idiotic wall.
We’ve still got a bit of time to see how the final tally comes in, and then we get to the next vote - on the clean CR.

Last night on NPR there was a piece where they went to Ohio to talk to people about the shutdown. The Trump voters they talked to uniformly said “We need The Wall!”, but some didn’t think this was the way to get it.
But here’s the thing - Ohio is way, way far away from the border. And the area they visited - Chillicothe, I believe - is almost 90% white and the Hispanic population is <1.5%. Yet again, it shows that the people who have the least exposure to immigrants are the worst hardliners on immigration.

They really should be going to places more representative of the state as a whole.

Glad Utah is focused on what’s important.
Utah is the same state that started that whole “porn is a health crisis” thing. When there are more important things to be concerned about!
Another way to frame this is that the GOP couldn’t even get their own caucus to support Trump’s nonsense. It failed to get all GOPers. There was bipartisan opposition to Trump’s plan. https://t.co/TwmNi0yBpY

Likewise, the Democrats’ plan succeeded in getting more GOPers to support their plan than Trump did.
Guess Trump isn’t good at negotiating with his party (or anyone else) to further his interests.

I think the big takeaway from all this is that a growing contingent of the Senate GOP just want the shutdown to end, they don’t care how that happens and are prepared to support Senate DNC efforts if it gets people back to work.

So, odds of Trump telling Federal workers that Democrats are the reason they are about to miss a second paycheck?

People of Chillicothe could use some immigrants. The damn city is hurting budget wise and is losing people. But it is part of the Appalachian thinking that starts around that part of Ohio. Beautiful area too. Nice and hilly.

Schumer’s gotta be fighting down a shit-eatting grin right now. He had a single defection from his ranks, while Mitch had several who voted for both bills. The reality is that, given another week, Schumer will have the votes to get cloture on his bill. Mitch is never going to get the votes for Donny’s, nor is Donny going to let him negotiate another bill. If there’s a way out of this, it’s going to by accepting some form of “clean” CR.

I think yesterday’s events have set the stage for a very painful weekend for the GOP. Mitch probably hoped to come out of today with some measure of leverage, with either pure party-line votes or even multiple Dem defections so he could say that there was room for “compromise.” But the worst scenario played out, with Dems staying fairly united while he had several defections on his side. The growing sense that the shutdown has run its course and the GOP position is only going to further deteriorate has set in.
There’s no way that Mitch saves face at this point without Donny losing it. He’s never getting the votes for $5.7B, not without offering something of equal or greater value. This half-assed “compromise” is not that and any talk along those lines is a waste of time. Either Donny is going to have to scale back the asking price or he’s going to have to raise the offer.

Then you aren’t paying them well enough! Duh.
re: #195 Old Liberal
Exactly. They never let wages rise until someone wants to do the work. It’s bullshit top to bottom.
This is one of the problems with consolidation and the government’s allergy to enforcing anti-trust laws. The fewer businesses that there are in a particular market, the easier it is for them to essentially price fix wages. Workers will be less inclined to change jobs if the only two other shops in two pay the same wages, hell, even if those shops are paying a little bit more they might not jump.

What I’m talking about is the first tweet blames Democrats and frames it as them blocking Trump from trying to reopen the government. The second tweet say’s “two competing bills” failed, without giving Democrats any credit for repeatedly trying to reopen the government or mentioning that the second bill was already passed by the Democratic House and was passed by the last Senate unanimously in December. The AP has been pulling this patently rancid bullshit repeatedly recently in tweets and headlines. Here’s a taste:
AP FACT CHECK: Democrats put the blame for the shutdown on Trump. But it takes two to tango. Trump’s demand for $5.7 billion for his border wall is one reason for the budget impasse. The Democrats refusal to approve the money is another. https://t.co/9IWnqUgl2d

The Associated Press has issued a second statement on the tweet: “The tweet was intended to make clear that both Trump and Democrats have failed to find common ground in their disagreements, but it could have done a better job of explaining the dynamics that have led to the shutdown. The complete AP Fact Check was robust and focused almost exclusively on Trump’s comments.”
They’ve simply presented Trump and the White House’s flagrantly dishonest claims as news, without any educational context. They’ve gotten burned doing this shit over and over again:
We have deleted a tweet about President Trump’s claim that the U.S. is the only country that grants birthright citizenship because it failed to note that his statement was incorrect.

re: #207 Eclectic Cyborg
Does this not still effectively teach him that he can hold federal workers hostage to make Democrats give him what he wants?
I understand the reasoning here, but I don’t think it’s as clear as that. For example, the last major shutdown was in 2013. I believe the cause of it had something to do with the GOP not wanting to fund Obamacare. Eventually there was some agreement to end the shutdown, but whatever was conceded, the GOP did not achieve their primary objective. So, on the basis of that, it might be reasonable to conclude that hostage-taking doesn’t work.
But now we’re having a major shutdown again anyway. So, it wouldn’t appear to me that the lesson of not taking hostages doesn’t really work, at least not in the sense of deterring further hostage taking.
The person’s who’s president changes, the makeup of congress change, the issues change, and with all that, the dynamics for hostage taking changes as well. And this is compounded if one of the parties doesn’t much care if there are shutdowns and workstoppages and government workers not getting paychecks indefinitely.

Yes. I am still not working; everyone keeps forgetting that while HHS is funded, FDA is not. I feel for the people that are having a hard time and I hope that this mess gets cleaned up soon. The orange shit-goblin has nothing left to negotiate with, the rich are going to be inconvenienced while going to the super bowl, will that cause something to happen?

Right, but let’s say the Dems offer Trump a deal where he gets say, $1.5 Billion for his wall and agrees to the DACA protections. Does this not still effectively teach him that he can hold federal workers hostage to make Democrats give him what he wants?
I understand the dire need to reopen the government but this would be just a horrible, horrible precedent to set.
It seems to me that DACA protections would be a pretty serious concession by him, given his rhetoric and how his base feels about it. So I find it difficult to believe he will offer it.
If Dems compromise on just less Wall funding, there will be a lot of people who will wonder whether the mere difference between 5.7 bill and 1.5 bill was worth having a shutdown over.

The problem will be the employers who say, “I can’t find anyone to do this work!”, when what they really mean is “I can’t find anyone who will do this work for the shit wages I want to pay!”
whether the issue is pay, conditions, location, whatever, if you cant find anyone who will do the work, then you made some wrong assumptions in your business model
especially if the only way you can survive is by breaking the law
if paying true wages would cut your margins to ribbons, again, you made some bad assumptions

I don’t think compromise is in order, because that’s really negotiating with a terrorist. You can say, “Here’s the legislation we’ll consider once government reopens,” but absolutely nothing in the CR.
The GOP has to be broken of this habit of taking the USG workforce and the economy as a whole hostage.

re: #238 Brother Holy Cruise Missile of Mild Acceptance
It really is amazing how they have painted themselves into a corner. Not surprising Trump did but surprising in some sense that those who’ve been around for a while went along with it. But then again they didn’t have much choice. They’ve cuffed themselves to trump and thrown away the key.
Not only have they painted themselves into a corner, they fucked up — completely fucked up — an escape from an unwinnable situation. This gave the Democrats ammo against them, and those who voted no on the clean CR — or those who didn’t vote.
In a week, Mitch may be wishing he wasn’t the majority leader.
re: #231 HappyWarrior
Did they ask the same question of the GOP who had people including the now President that wanted to reverse a century and change of precedent on citizenship law.
More than that. The 14th Amendment basically just reversed the Dred Scott decision. For the first time ever, there was a substantial population that weren’t citizens, even though they were born here. The 14th took care of that, but birthright citizenship was baked into English Common Law for centuries before there was a United States—and if the wingnuts are about anything, it’s English Common law. That and Jesus wrote the King James Bible in English.

I can potentially see a “compromise” that includes more border money, some DACA or other admin concessions, and vague Dem statements about how the extra money isn’t for The Wall, but which can be used for that purpose anyway. Future work on The Wall can be blamed on projects already agreed to, etc.

Orange asshole is getting ready to triple down:
Washington (CNN)The White House is preparing a draft proclamation for President Donald Trump to declare a national emergency along the southern border and has identified more than $7 billion in potential funds for his signature border wall should he go that route, according to internal documents reviewed by CNN.
Trump has not ruled out using his authority to declare a national emergency and direct the Defense Department to construct a border wall as Congress and the White House fight over a deal to end the government shutdown. But while Trump’s advisers remain divided on the issue, the White House has been moving forward with alternative plans that would bypass Congress.
“The massive amount of aliens who unlawfully enter the United States each day is a direct threat to the safety and security of our nation and constitutes a national emergency,” a draft of a presidential proclamation reads.
“Now, therefore, I, Donald J. Trump, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C 1601, et seq.), hereby declare that a national emergency exists at the southern border of the United States,” the draft adds.
The draft was updated as recently as last week, a US government official told CNN.

1) Russians
2) Election fraud
3) A media that has learned nothing other than Trump brings ratings
4) The magical balance fairy that has to blame both sides equally.
5) Fox “news” and hate radio.

My moms cousin was telling me that one of her nephews is furloughed because of the shutdown. Can’t imsg he’s too happy but you can’t underestimate how Republicans exploit prejudices.

You piss off the wrong states, and it’s gonna cost you. He got lucky with Pennsylvania, Michigan and even Wisconsin. Arizona has an SOS with reform on her mind, Nevada’s a swing state too.

“If Coast Guard members are killed during shutdown, their families won’t get benefits.”
That is utterly appalling.
I for one thought Trump’s treatment of McCain and the Khans would infuriate even the most red conservative of vets. I was wrong.
re: #178 Unshaken Defiance
Call me crazy but first on my policy change list is actually prosecute employers of those not entitled to work. When they scream tight labor, open up the quotas to where we get the labor we need, and deal with all fairly. Due process etc etc. California knows how to do this, when seasonal workers have confidence of access they don’t try to settle near the work, at least not illegally.
…
I agree that if anyone were serious about stopping undocumented people from “stealing” jobs from ‘muricans, then rather than stopping people from crossing the border, you should go after the employers. But Trump does not want to perp-walk white guys——-that would be the wrong photo op for appealing to his base. If you want photo ops of brown people being punished you focus on things like ICE and walls.

To put their veteran-ness ahead of (or equal to) their conservatism would be playing identity politics. They would be chastised by fellow conservatives.

Everyone should know that the republicans want this to happen, I plan on telling everyone down at the hipster coffee shop.

Go ahead Don. Declare a national emergency over this. Then when you’re replaced with a Democrat, they’ll declare a real national emergency over guns and healthcare. You’re setting the precedent.

I’m sure the latter believes that: for him, Russia has basically been a “force for good” - where “good” is defined as shoveling money at Trump businesses…

The real check on that sort of move is impeachment and removal. But the Senate GOP is too scared to actually do that, even if/when the Supreme Court blocks the move and reaffirms Youngstown Steel.

Maroon 5. Which is appropriate as Trump and the GOP are marooned in a five alarm disaster of their own making.

The shutdown is over.
Trump’s enablers know it.
The Senate GOP knows it.
The only reason for the delay now is for Republicans to beg for some face-saving action so that Donald Trump isn’t further humiliated.

This is going to go over like a wet fart in church:
“The massive amount of aliens who unlawfully enter the United States each day is a direct threat to the safety and security of our nation and constitutes a national emergency,” a draft of a presidential proclamation reads.
“Now, therefore, I, Donald J. Trump, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C 1601, et seq.), hereby declare that a national emergency exists at the southern border of the United States,” the draft adds.
The moment it is signed, there’s going to be law suits filed (I’m guessing complaints are already written). And it could very well be tied up in litigation until January 2021. But it really should be grounds for impeachment (so, you know, add it to that list)

My new prediction: The shutdown collapses and tRump gets to make his SOTU address. Since his dementia is obviously getting worse by the day, he completely blows a gasket and starts gibbering like a monkey in front of both Houses of Congress on every network.
Of course the MAGAts will say he’s speaking in tongues, and that proves he’s the Second Coming, or some shit….
The scenario:
Today: Bills fail in Senate.
Friday: McConnell tells Trump can get some border $$ but mostly not for wall. Pelosi tells Trump SOTU still possible if a deal.
Monday: Deal. House and Senate pass bill, Trump caves and signs.
Tuesday: Govt open, Trump gets to give SOTU.— Bill Kristol (@BillKristol) January 24, 2019
