And y’all saw this, right?
Trump officials tour unused FAA facility in California in search for place to relocate homeless people
A team of Trump administration officials toured a California facility once used by the Federal Aviation Administration this week as they searched for a potential site to relocate homeless people, according to three government officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private tour.
President Trump has directed aides to launch a major crackdown on homelessness in California, spurring an effort across multiple government agencies to determine how to deal with sprawling tent camps on the streets of Los Angeles and other cities, officials said.
Trump is expected to visit California on Tuesday and Wednesday. One administration official with knowledge of Trump’s visit to California said there were discussions about an announcement related to California’s growing homeless problem next week, but a second official said that any decision could be premature and that it was not on the current schedule for the trip.
Sounds a lot like wanting to get rid of “undesirables,” part two.

The idea is very useful in principle. I’m in cities a lot. Sometimes a cab isn’t available and if you’ve been out drinking, Uber can prove more timely than a cab. They treat their employees awful but it’s sound in principle but terrible in practice.

Hence the need to regulate them as a livery company rather than a tech company.
If you do that (require them to treat their gig drivers as employees) their business model of exploiting their drivers collapses.
Sometimes an Uber isn’t available either.

Lyft is a little more employee friendly iirc. Uber and Lyft are both great ideas. I just want them to value their employees. My Dad actually has done both cab driving and Uber. The cab companies aren’t exactly great to their drivers either.

How the fuck do we come back from this? Even if we take 2020, it seems like so many of the avenues to even slow the backslide are closed to us, much less actually try and reverse it. Lyft & Uber rides are commercially insured while the driver is one the way to pick up the passenger and while the passenger is in the vehicle. There are lots of other valid reasons to object to the exploitation baked into the business model. However the taxi companies are hardly blameless in that they created a demand for competition through rent-seeking behavior, letting their cars go to shit and the quality of the experience they offered deteriorate to the point where it often became a disgusting joke.

He’s not a good father.
There’s been a controversy in Alaska over a young woman who was disqualified after winning her race in a swim meet—because of the way her school-issued (and unaltered) swimsuit fit on her. Apparently a judge thought the young woman was wearing the suit “immorally.” Or some such. Yesterday, the Alaska School Activities Association reversed the disqualification, after an enormous hooraw.
Amazingly, it was not the young woman herself, her family or her school who brought the issue, but a coach at a different high school who was upset at the double standard. Apparently swimming is only proper for skinny pasty white young women or something.
Here’s a CNN article talking more about the issue and getting the perspective of the mother of the young woman. Mom thinks the swimsuit model reflects a 1950s view of women and doesn’t reflect modern muscular female bodies.
Oh, and by the way, let’s not forget the name of the official who made the original ruling. Her name is Jill Blackstone and she’s accused of targeting the young woman and her younger sister over the last year. *scowl*

What I wrote was “if they are regulated like a livery company, their business model collapses.”
We actually have taxis here (and Uber if you have cell service).
Treating their employees better is only one part of the Uber puzzle. If you’re in a wreck as a passenger in an Uber driver’s car, the car insurance company can deny a claim because the insurance was fraudulently obtained (as a private vehicle and not as a commercial livery service).
Uber is fraught with assaults, robberies, and rapes because they studiously avoid doing background checks on drivers. That doesn’t mean taxi companies don’t have the same, but they do the checks and weed criminals out for the most part.
It would be impossible for Uber to stay in business if they were required to follow the same laws as livery companies. All they are doing is avoiding taxes (unemployment, employer portion of social security, operating permits, &c).
Avoiding taxes and regulation is the model. (And assaulting women in their corporate offices, allegedly.)

This is the thing that keeps me from being ok with Biden as the nominee. He’s actually outright unlearned the lessons that Obama learned the hard way, that Republicans will pounce on bipartisanship as weakness and simply stamp their feet until they get their way, because the environment lets them. The arcane rules of the Congressional floor, the insipid credulity of the media giving the GOP and only the GOP the benefit of the doubt at all times, and their state level dominance, which the national Dem party seems to have zero answer for, basically lets them spit in the face of any sort of comity and win anyway.
That Biden is relying on exactly that comity to win the day if he’s elected is going to basically mean the GOP get to run roughshod again with zero consequence.

That is true. It’s frustrating. As I’ve said, my Dad drove for awhile. They definitely ripped him off but at the same time, there’s a demand for it. I’ve never had to wait too long for an Uber. It proves more useful than cabs do in the burbs.

Rudy Giuliani gets ripped to shreds for sharing ominous ‘ode to fascism’ video on 9/11 (Raw Story)
Rudy Giuliani marked the 18th anniversary of 9/11 by sharing an excerpt from a clothing commercial — and other social media users recoiled in horror.
Clothing manufacturer Grunt Style — which sells “patriotic” apparel celebrating police, military and violence — produced an ad last year the company says was intended for the Super Bowl that shows a police officer marching against anti-fascist demonstrators.
“This commercial shows what we stand for,” the company says in a statement posted with the video. “We support our military. We support the police. We support everyone’s right to protest. Protest peacefully.”

Fun fact
Rocket Man’s rocket test was an abject failure.
Of the four rockets in the launcher, three had some level of ignition. Radar only tracked two projectiles. One rocket reached the intended landing area some 330 Kms away. One rocket only traveled ~200 Kms.

I haven’t seen you directly speak out against President Trump yet, Sen. Sasse.
Sasse says Nebraska agriculture needs an end to trade wars (goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald, more at the link)
Sen. Ben Sasse said Tuesday the United States “needs to get through hard trade negotiations with China (and) get trade wars out of the way” so markets can be reopened and expanded for U.S. agricultural products.
In the meantime, he said, the House needs to approve the new U.S. trade agreement with Mexico and Canada negotiated to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement.
All of that is critically important to Nebraska agriculture, Sasse said, which will suffer an estimated $1 billion loss of trade markets for its farm products for the second year in a row.
You know, Senator, this state can’t keep soaking up billion dollar losses in markets every year. If there was only someone with a lot of power, someone who belonged to a body of only one hundred people, who might be able to call BS for what it is and work with those who are trying to get something done about this.
But you can’t be a conservative if you do that. You have to maintain your power and position amongst other conservatives; putting the state you represent first is far back in your rear-view mirror.

NOAA’s Chief Scientist is in full on RAGE MODE:
During the course of the storm, as I am sure you are aware, there were routine and exceptional expert forecasts, the best possible, issued by the NWS Forecasters. These are remarkable colleagues of ours, who receive our products, use them well, and provide the benefit of their own experience in announcing accurate forecasts accompanied by the distinction of all credible scientists—they sign their work. As I’m sure you also know, there was a complex issue involving the President commenting on the path of the hurricane. The NWS Forecaster(s) corrected any public misunderstanding in an expert and timely way, as they should. There followed, last Friday, an unsigned press release from “NOAA” that inappropriately and incorrectly contradicted the NWS forecaster. My understanding is that this intervention to contradict the forecaster was not based on science but on external factors including reputation and appearance, or simply put, political. Our NOAA Scientific Integrity Policy and Code of Scientific Conduct make clear that all NOAA employees shall approach all scientific activities with honesty, objectively, and completely, without allegiance to individuals, organizations, or ideology. The content of this press release is very concerning as it compromises the ability of NOAA to convey life-saving information necessary to avoid substantial and specific danger to public health and safety. If the public cannot trust our information, or we debase our forecaster’s warnings and products, that specific danger arises.
You know that the value of our science is in the complexity of our understanding, our ability to convey that understanding to a wide audience of users of this information, and to establish and sustain the public trust in the truth and legitimacy of that information. Unfortunately, the press release of last Friday violated this trust and violated NOAA’s policies of scientific integrity. In my role as Assistant Administrator for Research, and as I continue to administratively serve as Acting Chief Scientist, I am pursuing the potential violations of our NOAA Administrative Order on Scientific Integrity. Thankfully, we have such policies that are independently cited as among the best in the federal community, if not the best. Your NOAA and OAR management and leadership team believes in these policies and principles. I have a responsibility to pursue these truths. I will.

Okay, I will accept (since a bunch of people upvoted your comment) that I am a “purity pony” for posting snarky comments or informative tweets from Twitterati.
I see how others might think I am hypocritical for posting comments from other people, even though I have no account myself, and though I have resisted my own state government’s demand that as my village’s Public information Officer I refuse to open a Twitter or Facebook account.
I concede. I am a hypocrite.
Therefore, since I do not wish to be a hypocrite (and certainly not a “purity pony,” the definition of which seems to be ‘something I don’t like’), I will no longer look at people who post informative things there and especially not repost them here.
I despise hypocrisy, and if I am being called out as a hypocrite, I need to examine that and determine if that is true or if it is tone-policing.

So, about that Iran deal France is floating to Trump to get the JCPOA back on track.
Except for the part about the money.
Trump and right wing nattering nabobs were bitching over Obama returning $1.8 billion of Iran’s own money, but now they’re cool with $15 billion in loans, some coming from US? All to return to status quo ante. Trump’s one heck of a negotiator— lawhawk (@lawhawk) September 12, 2019
Trump is likely to take the deal to get back to the status quo ante, despite getting nothing from his nonsensical abrogation for sheer spite of Obama. He gets no credit for doing what shouldn’t have even been necessary.
It’s the same all across government. Trump blows up stuff relating to Obama to the cheers of the GOP, and then Trump walks back some stuff to claim that he’s made a better deal that is worse than what was there previously.
We’re supposed to believe all the nonsense Trump spews - that he’s a great negotiator, when it’s clear he can’t negotiate his way out of a paper bag full of holes.
He’s awful at his job, and his underlings are worse - he picks people who he can bully and suck up to him telling him what he wants to hear. That’s the job description. If you tell Trump what he wants to hear, you have the job. Competency and skill are irrelevant.
And it shows.
The GOP is taking advantage of all this to roll back the administrative state in fundamental ways, all while expanding executive power in dangerous ways. Neither is a good sign in a functioning government, because the sum is that the president gets away with doing even more damage with less oversight.

Apparently about 1 in 3 million ectopic pregnancies have led to a successful birth — where the fetus is in the abdomen rather than the fallopian tubes, it can on a very rare occasion work. It’s criminal that anyone is promoting the notion that anything other than an immediate abortion is an acceptable approach to this condition. I caught a commercial this morning from one of the big Dallas Baptist churches. The preacher is doing a series on Revelation, and the commercial was basically the end times are coming, what do you need to do to be prepared.

The idea is very useful in principle. I’m in cities a lot. Sometimes a cab isn’t available and if you’ve been out drinking, Uber can prove more timely than a cab. They treat their employees awful but it’s sound in principle but terrible in practice.

It’s a reference to tabletop role playing games a la Dungeons and Dragons, where certain weapon types or weapons with certain attributes get bonuses or negatives toward certain types of enemies. “+2 to Undead” would mean that certain weapon gets bonus damage to undead enemies you would encounter.
Oh, look: Gun nuts will have nowhere to shop pretty soon.
NBC - A group of 145 CEOs from some of the largest companies in America have sent a letter to senators demanding they pass stronger gun control laws, calling firearm violence “a public health crisis that demands urgent action.”
The letter, signed by the chief executives of Uber, Levi Strauss & Co., Twitter and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., among other companies, urges Congress to expand background checks and “red flag” laws, legislation that would enable law enforcement to temporarily take guns away from people deemed a danger to themselves or others.
“We are writing to you because we have a responsibility and obligation to stand up for the safety of our employees, customers and all Americans in the communities we serve across the country. Doing nothing about America’s gun violence crisis is simply unacceptable and it is time to stand with the American public on gun safety,” the letter, dated Thursday and first reported by The New York Times, said.
“Gun violence in America is not inevitable; it’s preventable. There are steps Congress can, and must, take to prevent and reduce gun violence. We need our lawmakers to support commonsense gun laws that could prevent tragedies like these,” it continued.

In a lot of cases, they either got them because of a blessing or a curse, or in some cases, they were artifacts that went through their own ordeal and gained the attribute (a sword that was used to slay a hundred demons, or whatever the dungeon master thinks up).

So Germany tried to crack down on this sort of pseudo-entrepreneurship model. It involved delivery people, for UPS or TNT and especially people delivering frozen foods. They had to wear company livery, drive trucks (often leased from the company) painted with the company logo, drove fixed routes and set rates but were considered “contract labor” and “free-lance workers”.
One restaurant even tried to get away with “renting” tables to its free lance waiters who then “purchased” the food from the kitchen and re-sold it to the customers, eating the losses if the customers walked out on it or sent it back…

That’s pretty brazen. In MuricaFuckYeahIstan, success would be if the restaurant owner made profit. They would be hailed as genius.
Not if the owner made profit, the waiters made a decent living, and the patrons were loyal because the food/service was good. The 2nd and 3rd part is irrelevant. That’s the problem.

While we have been grinding our teeth over the NC house cheating by gerrymander to get control, then cheating by lying to the Democratic caucus about business being conducted in order to override the governor’s veto of the budget (the NC senate still must override, but it only takes 1 D senator to support), there are more shenanigans.
We heard about the weird “lottery” of five “court approved” redistricting plans, but I hadn’t realized how deep the cheating went. The court approved expert for Democrats had done two major sets of examples: one at random and one designed to preserve incumbents. This was done to illustrate the effect of preserving Republican power despite minority status. Guess which set the five “court approved” redistricting plans put in the lottery tank were chosen from? Yep. You win the trophy!

But don’t you see that the whole trouble lies here. In words, words. Each one of us has within him a whole world of things, each man of us his own special world. And how can we ever come to an understanding if I put in the words I utter the sense and value of things as I see them; while you who listen to me must inevitably translate them according to the conception of things each one of you has within himself. We think we understand each other, but we never really do.

re: #156 Anymouse 🌹🎃
I logged in briefly before I go to bed. Denver is a long ways from here.
I still ain’t using Uber. I don’t care for exploiting workers.
I’m off to Denver in the morning to have my car serviced after it was pummeled near to death by softball-size hail.
As such, I will be missing from here. I also need to take a break from political commentary here for a while. I don’t know whether that will be a few days or a few months, but the open despite for my position about Twitter and Uber makes me feel as though I am not welcome here.
I will still read, as this is an important place to learn things I cannot learn from my completely conservative controlled local media. I presume the commentary from a purity pony isn’t necessary though.
G’night y’all.
Anymouse, I hope you’re reading this.
The counter-argument you presented last night appears to be that participating in ‘evil’ is okay if you don’t actually pay for it. That’s a cheapskate fundie mooching somebody else’s Playboys while he complains about the sinful subscribers. As a moral position, it seemed a bit thin.
Re-posting tweets when you don’t have a Twitter account isn’t hypocritical. But yes, polishing your halo for not having one does sound mote and beamish from here.
That said, criticism of a particular behavior is not a blanket condemnation of a person. It does not mean you are unwelcome. I do not dislike you. I do not think that your contributions to this community are without value. It is difficult to convey tone in writing, so please accept that this is not being typed in an angry way. There are subjects where I have found your comments and behavior to other Lizards to be hurtful or infuriating. This is not one of them, this was just irritating at a point where my patience was running thin.
I will apologize in turn. I should refrain from commenting when I’m already edgy from events IRL and the constant onslaught of appalling news that has dominated this infrastructure week. I should not have echoed the phrase ‘purity pony’ since it has a weight of connotation that is out of proportion to the issue at hand.
Truly, without any sarcasm intended, I wish you a safe journey to Denver. Maybe we can connect one of these visits — conversations may be easier to conduct face-to-face than it is in writing, late at night. Tone of voice would be clearer at any rate.

Well…my potentially unpopular opinion is that, given her downright eerie track record of being right about nearly everything, it’s far too soon to throw her under the bus. If there’s a mistake she’s making, it could simply be of the Hanlon’s Razor variety (attributing to malice/conspiracy what could just as easily be explained by old-school Dem obsession with long-dead procedural civility and perpetual fear of taking bold stances/effective messaging).

The problem is that we expected oversight when we got our blue wave…..and the oversight didn’t happen. Everything was either slow walked or simply ignored. No hearings yet on Cohen and his claims of Trump corruption and pay offs and we have had MONTHS to do that. No hearings expanding on the Mueller report whichever Pelosi has let die on the vine. They text talking about an maybe sort impeachment investigation, but nothing really scheduled. This is not to what we voted for, and it was inevitable that some people would wonder if bad faith is involved. Jesus…it’s crossed my mind once or twice and I’m not a conspiracy type.

re: #311 Scottish Dragon
Part of the problem here is that there are so many criminal acts and so many potential avenues for prosecution, that you can’t/shouldn’t do X because that could preclude Y, and Y might be faster but X is more comprehensive.
Impeachment is underway per Nadler. They’re doing the initial steps. They’ve been doing the due diligence, but where the Dem leadership has fallen short is that they are waiting for critical mass, but aren’t willing to help get us to critical mass by speaking consistently on this.
Cohen’s been interviewed by NY prosecutors, which is bad news for Trump. That’s state charges that are not pardonable by Trump.
Could Democrats be doing all this faster? Absolutely. I’m a fan of good and fast, rather than perfect and slow since the latter would result in Trump sticking around beyond 2020 (because he’s got a solid chance of reelection due to the same factors that got him in 2016).

Watergate was an entirely different situation: The Democrats had control of the Senate and the GOP party including many moderates (i.e. Senators to the left of today’s typical Democrat). Today’s Senate GOP will sabotage any trial and the House GOP will sabotage the investigation — this was not true in the Nixon years.

These people are out of their fucking minds.
Ectopic pregnancies are among the most dangerous conditions a woman might face. It can cause uncontrollable bleeding and death. Why take a watch and wait approach? Oh yeah, because a fetus (alive or dead) is more valued than a living woman. And with ectopic pregnancies, there’s no hope for a good outcome with a live birth.
You’d have a dead fetus and a dead woman.

And there’s been complaints about Dems somehow ‘refusing’ to work the refs or complain about this kind of shit.
Conservatives are constantly working the refs and it pays off for them big time—mainstream news media continually bend over backwards to accommodate the right. Progressives NEVER work the refs, just whine when the media screws them over, yet again.

3) If the same story of presidential/administration indifference to the AlQaida threat had come out after the fact

1) A Republican wins the presidency in 2004 and serves two terms. A Republican wins the presidency in 2012 and is reelected in 2016. There is universal agreement in the media, talking heads etc. that it will be decades before Democrats can be trusted with the presidency.
2) At least a 50% chance of Gore being impeached and removed from office before 2004 for incompetence.

There is little chance this even making it to a Discovery phase. Here is likely what is going to happen instead.
1. Trump will claim victory and his justification for his “deep state” bullshit.
2. Any Discovery phase will mean Republican Congress members get indicted on various crimes, or get revealed as slimy sacks of shit that will hurt them in the next election. Trump himself may further be mired in legal woes after his defeat in 2020. A Plea Deal will happen instead where…
3. The case will quietly be dismissed as…
4. ..McCabe will receive a very quiet “job” consulting for for a wealthy GOP- aligned business entity -and we never hear about it ever again.
This is what is going to happen instead of Discovery and a public trial and the revealing of real scumbag goings-on by the Republican shit machine during the last election cycle. Count on it.

Dr Kendzior’s expertise is solid, but narrow. She specialized in the kleptocracies of the Former Soviet Union(FSU). She has been very effective in calling out the similarities between the FSU and the Trump Administration.
But she has not yet called out the differences. And, I think that is due to the current narrowness of her expertise. I have great faith that as she widens her knowledge and understanding, her views may modify.
Additionally, the reality show/psycho drama of the Trump Administration has exacted a psychic toll on a lot of people, including her. And I do hope that Trump is sanctioned for this.

Lets face it. If Al Gore had managed to listen to intelligence and take steps to prevent the 9/11 attacks, he’d still probably be under the shadow of impeachment for having ‘stolen’ the election.
And they would have accused him of lying about the attacks ever being a possibility in the first place. They’d have pointed to Tom Clancy novels and that Lone Gunman episode and said he was just making it up.
