From Anne Laurie. Remember that award that Trump got from the 20/20 Bipartisan Justice Center? Because of that, Harris pulled out of going to the forum that was going to be happening with Democratic presidential candidates. Well, a lot of people decided that not having the only HBCU graduate at a forum dealing with issues affecting blacks was not a good look, so they kicked out the 20/20 group.
Folks, let’s stop for a minute and reflect on what Kamala Harris did in the last 24 hours.

???? You really think Trump knows any of these concepts? All he knows is what Roy Cohn taught him — and that doesn’t include anything about our form of government, our history, or our principles. And if he did hear of any of them, he would dismiss them as being the ideas of losers who don’t know how to enrich themselves at the expense of everyone else.

I’d imagine the biggest worry that is weighing on Republican minds today is the reality that, once that vote happens Thursday, their last remaining legal fig leaf falls and they’re left bare-assed naked before the courts. There ceases to be any valid legal excuse for obstruction after that point, because “It’s not a ‘legitimate’ inquiry” is not going to impress any but the most wingnut of judges.

Good morning/afternoon, folks.
Was reading some news updates after doing a favor for a friend involving song lyrics when it suddenly occurred to me that I just couldn’t recall how long it’s been since i could hear the verses to a popular 90s Israeli song without thinking it’s about a certain orange-tinted buffoon…
“On the wet floor all alone with no railing or light,
I slip and fall and the world’s edge is not in sight,
Without a past and no memory to try,
I am the hero who just rides the mind’s eye.Like a lost soul all alone with no cover nearby,
Sailing away on a ship of the damned,
The future haunts, the present no gift but a gun,
I’m being tried, there’s no mercy and nowhere to run.”(Translated from Hebrew by yours truly)
Anyone else find the second verse particularly fitting?

I used to think that affinity for a monarchy was the one thing that separated our conesrvatives from the European conservatives who either venerated a monarchy out of misplaced tradition or not trusting the democratic process. I no longer think that way. I think ultimately fascism is very similar to monarchism in that it is a cult around one leader. Now this has happened under communist dictatorships too i.e. Stalin, the Kims, and others but it’s more obvious to me than ever that American right wingers want a powerful executive that is not questioned. Likewise, they will deem any left of center executive as illegitimate or undeserving of his or her power. I’ll concede that Obama did grow executive power but I would argue that Republican obstruction helped pave the way for that.

Doc Liz, how familiar are you with the AfD? I know you’re in the Czech Republic and not Germany but I was learning more about them last night watching a German documentary on YouTube about how they have parallels to the Nazis. There’s a couple things that really disturbed me about them. They for the most part seem fairly youthful. The Nazis too were a youth driven movement. The other thing and I’ve seen this here in the US too is this nationalistic fervor that you can never be a real American/German/whatever unless you’re the right racial background. To these guys, there is no way that children and grandchildren of refugees who speak fluent German can ever be German and that attitude scares the hell out of me.

They like to say they believe in limited government and individual rights. I’ve not seen that especially with this administration. Trump weakening environmental regulations was done for his donor base’s benefit to pollute the environment without fear of reprisal. Yeah I noticed that too. I’ve mostly only been in former West Germany but when my brother and I were in Colditz, the innowner made a racist comment about the Romani that made my brother and I cringe. We had wanted to stay at the castle but a youth group had booked it for the two nights we were there. Meanwhile our cousin who lives in Frankfurt near where our family is from originally on that side of the family is very liberal minded and was telling me that Frankfurt as a whole is pretty liberal minded. I like what I am reading about in Slovakia with the new president there. I’m a big admirer of hers. She speaks the four languages that are commonly spoken in Slovakia and she’s quite socially liberal by Slovakian standards.

Thirty Years Later, We Still Don’t Truly Know Who Betrayed These Spies
Was there a fourth mole in the U.S. intelligence system that blew these secret agents’ covers?
The loathesome drunkard Aldrich Ames is blamed for most of the betrayals of that period but there is a discrepancy in the timeline of his operations, one that points to another, as yet unknown source in some of the cases.
After the Rosenbergs, virtually all KGB moles in the US were motivated by money rather than ideology. Who better fits that bill than some amoral young Randian riding the Washington waves in the heady days of the second Reagan administration?

In a nutshell, the right wing fever swamps specifically ignore Trump criminal conduct when they respond to various polls. But when you phrase the conduct in generalities and don’t attribute the conduct to a specific person, they invariably agree - seeking foreign assistance in digging up dirt against a political opponent is wrong.
It’s when you get specific to Trump’s conduct that the GOP cognitive dissonance takes hold and they ignore the facts and logic to excuse Trump’s actions and caterwaul about Democrats investigating Trump.
It’s IOKIYAR in action.

Secretary Clinton actually said half of Trump’s supporters were “deplorables,” which would calculate to about 13 percent of voting-age Americans.

AfD’s stronghold is in the former DDR - and that’s still worlds away from the former West Germany, despite two decades of unification. It’s a problem, quite honestly, in a good many parts of the former Soviet bloc.
West Germans have been living, working and attending school with immigrants since the 60’s. Although not always models of tolerance and integration, they have generally learned to accept and get along with their “fellow citizens with a background of migration” as they are referred to officially.
In former East Germany, they knew only guest workers from Vietnam or North Korea who lived in segregated barracks and were sent home after their work contracts expired. Or the arrogant scions of third-world dictators and their henchmen sent over on student exchange programs.
None of this prepared the people for the society they were annexed into in 1989.

My wife reminds me that Hurricane Sandy hit Long Island 7 years ago today.
Doesn’t seem like that long ago.
We’re still dealing with the cleanup and infrastructure needs.
NJ Transit still hasn’t upgraded its facilities in Hoboken, though work is supposed to start there to address flooding from the Long Slip. They’ve moved some facilities to higher ground, but a Sandy event would still have catastrophic effect on NJ Transit (less if they follow their damned rules and shift equipment to higher ground from their Meadows facility).
LIRR has improved, but the big problems are the NEC tunnels - both on the Hudson and East River side that have to be repaired. Both are Amtrak owned. MTA subway tunnels are still being repaired, and that will take another few years to fix.
Barrier beaches are still threatened by coastal flooding, and we’re still building more along the shore than we should. A plan to build a barrier around Lower Manhattan/LES is in the planning stage, and construction could start soon.
There are still plenty of homes that have yet to be fixed, elevated above the flood level, etc. But the immediate damage is not as visible as it once was.

The sad thing is, it doesn’t need to happen. It’s the media’s own defensive crouch giving in to conservative whining and then taking Dem criticism as a ‘if you’re taking flak…’ sign rather than one that they might have gone off course. They feel the need to mollify Conservative anger, while feeling justified by Dem anger. All to appease an audience that will never love them back, not while Fox News exists.

Re: Coal. Everything Donnie touches, dies:
The company’s collapse underscores how deeply cheap natural gas and renewable energy resources have cut into coal’s share of the U.S. power market. Cloud Peak Energy Inc., Cambrian Coal Co., Blackjewel LLC and Blackhawk Mining LLC have all filed for bankruptcy this year. Their downfall mirrors waning demand for fuel that as recently as 2003 accounted for more than half of all U.S. power generation.
Murray warned in 2017 that the shifts in the industry could push it into bankruptcy. The company initially chose to avoid that route and persuaded creditors to ease its debt load somewhat. But analysts said this left the company at a disadvantage with rivals because it remained saddled with high costs and interest expenses.
Murray shuttered some of its West Virginia mining operations in September, citing weak market conditions.

He kind of really didn’t have a choice. Obama was popular in New Jersey and Christie had re-election the next fall. I’m not saying he only made nice with Obama because of that consideration but it wasn’t like his motivations were entirely alturistic. I mean did I like Peter King in New York of all people calling out his fellow Republicans for how they acted on disaster relief to the Eastern Seaboard? Hell yes but it just means he was serving his own interests. The problem with Republican legislators especially in Washington is they’re fine with “big government” if they know it will benefit their constituents but they hate it for other people. I wouldn’t oppose relief from FEMA if a giant tornado hit let’s say Steve King’s district in Iowa because the people there are our fellow Americans. When disaster strikes our country, we have an obligation both legally and morally to help but Steve would never extend that same belief to New Yorkers or Puetro Ricans. That is what is wrong with the conservative mindset.

If he attended, he loses the plausible deniability that comes with not being present when Trump’s criminal conduct is corroborated over and over again from every angle and every person who comes in to testify - all while implicating more and more top GOPers in Trumpworld.
I’m also seeing this as a preview of what Republicans are going to try to pass off as a “strategy” for dealing with the impeachment hearings: i.e. basically a concerted delegitimization of the whole process, via a functional GOP boycott, punctuated with occasional public antics like Matt Gaetz’s little barge-in, and a relentless media campaign in the usual friendly outlets endlessly shrieking the same stock talking-points of “LYNCHING!! COUP!! WITCH HUNT!! etc..
Never mind that Nancy Pelosi and the House Democrats are proceeding strictly “by the book”, and are going to dot every i and cross every t; delegitimization is the GOP’s only real option to retain control of the narrative. Which effort, I’m guessing, outside of the Fox Bubble, is likely to fail.

I remember my grandparents telling me about a couple they knew through their friends. Rock solid Republicans all the way down but they liked the benefits and help that the federal government was able to give since their daughter struggled with a mental illness. I don’t deny that Republicans and conservatives love their families. They most certainly do. The problem is the programs they just shrug off as “big government” or “socialism” are programs that benefit other people’s loved ones. Now if you want to discuss how to improve their effectiveness, fine but don’t use rare cases of abuse in things like welfare benefits which is exactly what Reagan got away with doing for years to discredit the whole idea that government can and should be a positive force in helping the less well off. I’ve grown up seeing conservatives insist that you can’t throw money at programs but yet they never respond that way when it comes to the military or prisons but they’re all about it if it involves more spending on education and health care.

Kamala Harris Understands Criminal Justice at a Very Deep Level
by Nancy LeTourneau, Washington Monthly
Since I support Kamala, I really liked this column.
But if we’re actually concerned about public safety, that means doing whatever we can to stop a crime from happening in the first place. Furthermore, preventing crime means paying attention to children who have experienced trauma. In our patriarchal culture, those issues have been marginalized—particularly as the kind of thing only women care about. To the extent that Harris is right, perhaps it is not a coincidence that women like she, Janet Reno, and Marion Wright Edelman have been the ones to champion the cause of children in an effort to prevent crime.
Harris has taken a lot of heat for her history as a prosecutor. But what she demonstrates in these clips is that she understands criminal justice at an incredibly deep level. As Jeniffer Rubin notes, contrary to what many have suggested, this is an area where Harris leads the pack. Being unburdened by the need to appear “tough,” she is able to articulate how we can be smart on crime.

The GOP doesn’t care. They put their party over nation, and will spew whatever toxic bilge the fever swamps come up with, even if it means that the GOP get wiped out in the 2020 elections. They wont force Trump to take responsibility for his criminal conduct, because they think they can weather the storm and stick around to fuck around with the 2020 census redistricting to preserve their hold on power even further along with maximizing the number of right wing know nothings on the federal (and state) benches.

You reminded me of the 1970’s German song “Greek Wine”. The tune isn’t much to write about, but the lyrics are universal:
Men with brown eyes and black hair were sitting there
And the music coming out of the jukebox was strange and exotic.
When they saw me one of them got up and invited me over.
…
And then they told me about green hills, the sea and the wind.
About old houses and young women who are on their own.
And about the child that has never seen its father.
They kept telling themselves, one day we’ll go back
And the money saved up will be enough for a small fortune at home.
And soon nobody will think about it anymore, how it has been over here.

This strikes me as something a childless relative of mine would do trying to be cute. The problem is Trump has 5 kids and Melania has 1. If they ever actually interacted with their children, they would know it is inappropriate.

No. They don’t. They don’t do anything normal. Not in how they stand, talk, communicate, show emotion beyond self-enrichment/empowerment, and neither cares about anyone beyond themselves.
I mean goddamn can’t even give candy to kids normally. And the way Trump talked about the dog too. Just damn man.

Every time I see Trump’s tiny feet I have to remind myself that you only see his li’l toes because he is wearing high heels just like Melania.

Red America needs to realize that climate change is a national security issue as much as it is an environmental one. Maybe they won’t give a damn when it’s talked as an environmental one. but it is a national security one too.
One to be dealt with by building more weapons, not reducing emissions.

this whole line of thinking is nuts
if pelosi announces “the impeachment inquiry wouldnt include muller related info” that doesnt mean anything
it has no force of law
there’s not any rule or one way valve
and even if true, it couldnt be a lie, or feint or a device or trick?
are we really entering the “no backsies” territory of law?
Now for something completely different…
Toured the ruins of ancient Corinth today. In the antiquities museum, there was a stone plaque on display with the letters {syn}agogue heb{rew} (it would look like that if the alphabet were Roman), and below it a short pedestal decorated with menorahs. Very unexpected and cool.

It’s about damn time.
ordered a new stove from Sears.
we had mega points and figured Sears may not have a long life
got three (3) phone calls last night - it’ll be delivered today between 3:15 and 5:15.
Pretty accurate.
so we take the old one out last night
plus a little light demo on the counter top
8:57AM another robocall. your order has been delayed to 11/1.
so i call.
It’s a ‘manufacturer delay’. uh-huh.
so the three calls last night -they were *all* mistaken?
yup
ok, well based on those three calls the old stove is gone
how do we cook for three days?
she actually said: “i understand how hard it is to cook without a stove. yours will be arriving on 11/1”

They were ahead of their time and should have stuck with it.
Source familiar with Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman’s closed-door deposition told The Hill he has testified that he took notes during the July 25th phone call between President Trump and Ukraine President Zelenskiy, and made two or so recommended edits to the summarized call transcript that weren’t even used in the end.
my two questions:
- so to confirm, you have in fact read the entire summarized call transcript?
- without going into any specifics, is it an accurate and substantially complete representation of the scope and duration of the call?
In light of the teardown going on at Deadspin, this is worth revisiting…

It still amazes me that Sears (and JC Penny, for that matter) who spent nearly a century selling stuff via catalogs couldn’t figure out how to make sales on the internet work.

I keep wondering about the leaks coming from these depositions. Mostly, who is doing the leaking? I can see why both sides would want to leak information - for the Democrats it keeps the story in the news and reminds people how shitty Trump is; for Republicans it gives them a chance to counter things in a slow drip manner rather than an avalanche when everything becomes public all at once (with the hope that everyone forgets the details by the time it comes out).

It especially allows the GOP to be selective about what is released and attack it in detail.

Especially when they had the distribution chain to do same day sales (every one of their thousands of stores was already linked to their national distribution network), but they couldn’t figure out what to do with it. They could have killed Amazon before Amazon became Amazon (and which is now trying to build out the distribution network to do same day distribution).
Others are leveraging store locations to better effect, such as Target and Walmart and Kohls. But JC Penneys and Sears failed miserably, and Toys R Us also failed for a similar reason.

I suspect a lot of it was “we’ve always done it this way” or “our customers are used to the way we do things” or some such backwards looking nonsense.

But to get there, the NCAA will take its time, and let its divisions update their bylaws at their own convenience, which means they could drag this out for as long as it takes, which can be 2021.
This is from the NCAA own press release.

Wasn’t Sears headed away from catalog sales in that time period? And thus I would wonder whether they viewed on-line sales as competition against their own brick-and-mortar stores? (Which would be sort of ironic given that they eventually self-destructed in part because upper management starting pitting parts of their company against other parts.)

Well the California law apparently doesn’t take effect until 2023, so I suspect that will be the “target date”. Honestly, this is something that should have happened 25 years ago when the big money really started to pour into college sports. But better late than never, I suppose.
Thanks, I guess, to journalists writing that there was nothing wrong with booing Trump at the World Series, but everyone other than Beltway civility cops already knew this.
