Well, fuck my county.
Morrill County Board chair says commissioners ‘value their Second Amendment,’ oppose ‘red flag’ bill (Goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald).
Morrill County made news during its Jan. 28 meeting when commissioners unanimously passed a resolution opposing a “red flag” bill that’s currently being considered in the Legislature. Basically, they’re saying that if a red flag law passes, they would support the county sheriff if he decides not to enforce the law, declaring such laws as being unconstitutional.
LB 58, a holdover bill from the 2019 session, implements the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act. In effect, it would allow a court to intervene in extreme cases where a person has demonstrated they are a danger to themselves or others.
My county becomes the first in the state to pass such a resolution.

I care about Rush’s cancer the way Rush did about children being insured which was shit at all when he acted like SCHIP was this terrible thing. The thing that never Trumpers need to realize is their ideology has always been pretty rotten. It was rotten when Buckley was extolling the virtues of the Jim Crow South in the 50’s. It was awful when Goldwater opposed the most important civil rights legislation in history in the 60’s. It was awful when Nixon covered up Watergate in the 70’s. It was awful when Reagan opened up his campaign where three civil rights workers were murdered and with a grin told the audience about his belief in states rights in the 80’s. It was awful in the 90’s when right wingers encouraged right wing militias. It was awful in the 2000’s when Bush used fear of same sex marriage to get reelected. It awful in the 2010’s when the first African American President had his birthright questioned and mocked. And it’s awful here in the 2020’s as Donald Trump gets a complete pass from Congressional Republicans on extorting an ally to investigate his rival. Conservatism as we know it needs to die in this country.

That didn’t happen when the Democrats were out of power for nearly the same amount of time after the Civil War. I can’t knock Ike for not knowing what would happen later. No offense but your brother’s an idiot. I’m sorry I know that sounds harsh but it was clear as day that he was mocking that reporter. We know about the revisionism about it. The point is that anyone should have seen that when it happened or its aftermath and gone “You know what this guy shouldn’t be President.” It should have been a huge clue to anyone who has any decency that Trump is a punkass bully who mocks those he thinks are weaker than him. You didn’t anger me and you don’t need to log out. It’s just AM, I know what conservatives are. But if conservatives are what you keep on saying they are whenever I point out the absurd reality that allowed this orange ass pimple to fester, it just frustrates me. We really are in a dark reality now. I mean we’re in a world where Bill Kristol and Jennifer Rubin make sense a lot of the time. I know you don’t like them and I’m not exactly an admirer especially of Kristol, he of the architects of the Iraq War but we’re in a surreally dark place and I just get a little testy.

But I really hope we prove something ot him and the asshole dictators that helped him get elected that the American people are bigger and stronger than he’ll ever be.
My sister and I bring this up periodically with him but he is so brainwashed that, as Orwell says, “The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.” Very frustrating

Yeah, I’m okay. It’s just the uncertainty. I’m one of the youngest people here and I don’t know what the future is gonna be. Sorry everyone. I really should sleep on it.
It’s just that it really feels that it’s always one step forward, two steps back. I watched the impeachment presentations by the managers. It was a job well done where they documented evidence and precedent. And then we get the craziness with the Iowa caucus that stirs up the conspiracy nuts and then Trump’s SOTU where the media acts like it’s all normal and that Pelosi was the oen acting in bad faith when they ignore that a Republican senator today outed the whisteblower.
re: #101 LeftyRambles2413 (HappyWarrior)
You are not alone. I am so close to finally getting a full pension and I fear a GOP win in 2020 not only takes that away from me but contracts Social Security out to something like H&R Block where people will have to pay a substantial fee for what we do for no charge.
I also fear the uptick in racism and anti-Semitism which Trump encourages. Truly fear about the Religious Right getting their way with us and exiling us to Israel for Armageddon to happen.

I truly fear for the whistleblower. There is no doubt in my mind that #RussianRand is programming a Caesar Sayoc or Scott Roeder to kill the whistleblower. And if that happens the DC Press Corpse will ignore it…

TBF, we also had a major member of the party cheat on a sick wife, and unlike Jackie Gingrich, Elizabeth Edwards was well on her way at that point to her only way out of a hospital being into hospice. It’s almost as if there’s something broken in a lot of males who have the drive to be politicians.
However, going back to being fair to our side instead, that led to John Edwards basically looking at the proverbial “can’t even be elected dogcatcher”, while Newt’s political career had barely begun.
It’s almost as though we reject someone once they’re shown to be a bad apple, but the Rs support them because they are or something.
[edit: and of COURSE I go and forget that Marianne was also only actually dumped when she got sick. Newt is the biggest creep ever to hold office unless Trump trumps him.]

Yes, that’s a very key distinction. Edwards lost a lot of respect when that was revealed. Newt ran for President in 2012 and he’s still seen as a respected elderstatesman. I just hate the GOP’s fake holier than thou bs. It really is telling that they talk all that stuff about morality when they have tons of their own failngs.

The media know that Trump is ratings gold. They are simply doing their job (which is to increase advertising revenue by keeping ratings high). I do not know how we came to think that their “job” was to provide the public with balanced and complete information.

SOTU address continues Trump’s role as divider in chief
In addition, Trump’s State of the Union address felt more like a campaign speech for someone running for reelection than a speech to Democrats as well as Republicans in Congress. It lacked the formality, decorum and graciousness that a State of the Union normally has.
USA Today editorial
By juicing the economy with deficit spending, Trump is doing for America something like he did as a private businessman, loading his hotels and casinos with so much debt that they ultimately filed for bankruptcy.
The United States government doesn’t risk bankruptcy. It can always borrow or print more money. But the debt load will burden future generations. Today’s massive deficits, which will soar even higher when the next recession hits, risk future inflation and higher interest rates.
Under Trump’s leadership, the government is running up red ink at rates typically seen only during recessions and war.
re: #134 #thegreatpoolpondconversion (dangerman)
Same thing’s going on here in Czech Republic. The current government, led by agro-oligarch Andrej Babiš, is running up the tab like we’re in the midst of a recessionary environment (mostly, he’s doing it to shore up his voter base of pensioners, even though everyone is telling him that the ČR desperately needs pension reforms and that the current pension scheme is unsustainable beyond 2030) and the outcome will likely be the same here as it will be in the US….future inflation and higher interest rates, not to mention burdening future taxpayers.

It’s not just the Presidency. This is the end result of the Powell memorandum which normalized the selfishness of Ayn Rand’s objectivism into every facet of society. We now live in a country where selfishness is the norm and everyone looks out for #1 while they lie, cheat, backstab and steal their way to the top and if they fail, they blame a scapegoat and wind up in a trailer park getting off on Trump kicking colored people, Jews, Muslims and queers down while listening to Fox, Hate Radio and going to right wing churches every Sunday.

Yeah but Trump will counter with more and more nutty awfulness- and his followers will eat it up.
We haven’t seen the Krazy yet. Giving Limbaugh the Medal during the SOTU was more a Fuck You to most of the country than an actual honor to one man. Trump is going to do more and more to skirt the law and stir up more and more anger amongst his core support. Trump will also not leave the White House willingly, and go full on Krazy calling upon Oathkeepers and other nutbags to circle the White House and detain Congress members.. we have not seen the Krazy yet. Think this sounds like nutty? Just think back before Trump took office how “Presidential” and “moderate” he would become once he held office.
re: #182 Joe Bacon 🌹
It’s not just the Presidency. This is the end result of the Powell memorandum which normalized the selfishness of Ayn Rand’s objectivism into every facet of society. We now live in a country where selfishness is the norm and everyone looks out for #1 while they lie, cheat, backstab and steal their way to the top and if they fail, they blame a scapegoat and wind up in a trailer park getting off on Trump kicking colored people, Jews, Muslims and queers down while listening to Fox, Hate Radio and going to right wing churches every Sunday.
Yeah it’s cultural too. I see it everyday on social media. The whole troll culture shit. The media talks about a decline of civility and in a weird way they’re right but they enabled this from the get go by treating a man who belittled a disabled reporter as a serious presidential contender. The minute Trump started floating that he would run. The media should have taken a look at what he’d been saying and pounce on it. But they didn’t do that.

It’s madness that people let that slide. The First Amendment is first for a reason. Without being able to print their critical opinions of the king, the Sons of Liberty would never have been able to assemble a Revolutionary Army. It matters when the press is attacked.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.
I didn’t watch what I knew would be a steaming pile of crap and lies from Trump. I have seen the endless parade of critics hitting on Pelosi for tearing up the printed copies provided by Trump.
That speaks volumes - on the media mendacity and how they continue to deflect and distract from Trump’s actions.
Pelosi tore up her copies. Big fucking deal. It was intended to get under Trump’s skin, and this morning Trump has retweeted a bunch of criticisms of Pelosi, which is exactly what Pelosi knew would happen. Instead of messaging on the SOTU, he’s easily baited and distracted.
As for the content of the speech itself, it was the typical Trump stump speech - nonstop lies and misinformation. None were bigger than his claim that he’s protecting people with preexisting conditions. The GOP has spent a decade trying to destroy Obamacare and that includes the Obamacare provision that requires insurers to not discriminate against those with preexisting conditions. The GOP has spent a decade trying to repeal Obamacare and this provision legislatively.
They are still trying to invalidate it in the courts, and this past week they tried to delay the case from being heard until after the elections, because they know that if it came out before the election, the public would know that the GOP were behind this effort and the GOP has no plan for what comes next.
It’s all lies and projection. The GOP doesn’t care. They enable the most corrupt and criminal admin in our nation’s history and allow an unindicted coconspirator in federal felonies to lie and crime his way to stay in power at any cost - the cost being shredding the US Constitution. It’s what McConnell does best, but sure, let’s focus on Pelosi ripping up the SOTU.
It’s a sad state of affairs. Trump spending so much time lying about Obama and the economy under Obama to puff up his own puttering economy that his own actions have slowed via his idiotic trade war. Trump’s had to resort to socialistic bailouts of farmers to avoid even more farm bankruptcies.
We see manufacturing slow down due to the trade war, because American importers are the ones paying for it - and passing along the higher costs to American consumers.
So sure, cheer that a Marine came home and was reunited with his family on live tv. That’s a feels moment that should not distract from fact that Trump also gave a completely undeserved medal of freedom to Rush. The only reason that he did so was because Rush announced he had stage 4 cancer, and this is another value signaling effort to show that Rush’s misinformation campaign will continue and is approved by Trumpworld. That’s what that is about. The misogynist and bigot Rush was given a medal by an approving misogynistic sex predator and bigot Trump.
The rest of the speech is the same mix of vaporware and lies, and that includes his claims he’s going to have another round of tax cuts. There’s no tax cuts planned, and it’s not going to happen. The ME peace process is DOA as even far right Israelis pan the plan while the Arab World and Palestinians also ignore it.
The dull thud is how this went down - and Pelosi clapped back.

Some probably are genuinely idealistic about Bernie’s platform. I’ve never denied them that. However, I was talking about the people in the campaign leadership. I have zero faith in them to actually work hard for the nominee if it’s not Bernie and that’s even if they get most of what Bernie wants into the platform. I’m tired of Leninists whether they be named Trump or Bernie. I’m voting for President. A man or woman of flesh, bone, and soul. Someone who is a person rather than an idea.
re: #225 The Pie Overlord!
From my last check, he’s tied with Bernie in terms of delegates, but ahead in votes.
Either way, Iowa shows how weak Bernie is, and that the winner will likely be anyone but Bernie. If he can’t win in the one place he’d be certain to find favor, the odds he leads after Super Tuesday drop drastically.

I think last count had him slightly ahead. I wouldn’t say useless but it’s not a good barometer where the Democratic Party base is leaning right now. As I said, the candidates earned their poker chips. We’ll see what happens in New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada. And then we get gradually set up for the big day where I think we’ll really see who has the strongest game.

That is what it reminds me of too. Thalman and the KPD called the SPD “Social fascists.” I don’t know if these people are just so zealous that they don’t look at the greater stakes or so ideologically holier than thou that they would rather another four years of Trump. One thing is for sure, a revolution isn’t what we need. Our system as devised will work. What the Jacs don’t get is you have to work with people to get it done. And there is nothing revolutoinary about Bernie’s reality.

I haven’t seen them go after people with disabilities but I always felt lost in their world. They propose things like free college for all but I find myself wondering where former IEP kids like myself benefit from Bernie’s plans. I’m on board with free community college for all because I think community college is and I speak from personal experience where high school kids can mature academically. I’m just sick of pseudo revolutionary nonsense from the likes of these guys who think their one size fits all solutions are the answer to everything.
They conceal their hatred for the disabled. But it comes out cloaked as “concern” for the environment, and for the “working class”. You will remember the disabled woman who was refused an Uber because of her service animal. Twitter Left sided not with her, but with the driver, who was fired because he disregarded Uber’s own directives which required him to transport her, and the service animal. The woman got considerable harassment. There are many other examples.

Also, here’s another one for the “Fuck Trump!” file:
At least 200 Salvadoran migrants and asylum seekers have been killed, raped or tortured after being deported back to El Salvador by the United States government which is turning a blind eye to widely known dangers, a new investigation reveals.
Human Rights Watch has documented 138 deported Salvadorans murdered by gang members, police, soldiers, death squads and ex-partners between 2013 and 2019. The majority were killed within two years of deportation by the same perpetrators they had tried to escape by seeking safety in the US.
The report, Deported to Danger: United States deportation policies expose Salvadorans to death and abuse, also identifies more than 70 others who were subjected to beatings, sexual assault and extortion - usually at the hand of gangs - or who went missing after being returned.

Finally, economists says travel restrictions imposed in response to the coronavirus could take a $10.3 billion bite out of the economy.
A fall-off in visits from China represents the “most immediate and direct link between the U.S. economy” and the virus, said Mark Zandi, the chief economist at Moody’s Analytics. He projects real GDP growth at 1.7% this year, just below the U.S. economy’s 2% potential growth rate. […]
The virus will result in a $10.3 billion loss in Chinese visitor spending in the United States, most of that in 2020, Oxford Economics estimates.
Each visitor spends an average of $6,000 per trip, not including airfare or money spent on education, the research firm says.

I’m telling you. I’m tickled pink by the fact that they’re complaining about the caucuses rewarding Pete with more delegates than him. They wanted to keep the caucuses and then ranked voting. They just never consider that not everyone loves Bernie Sanders. They really are the children of Ron Paul’s movement in a lot of ways. The baby was born to an mother who was infected, but there have also been babies born to infected mothers where the infection has apparently not passed from mother to child. And there have also been cases of babies becoming infected after being born to a mother who was not infected.

What’s missing from the winners/losers is facts and reality.
Trump’s touting a strong economy, but the reality and facts suggest a different picture entirely. Trump’s trade war has done tremendous damage and is slowing the economy in ways that were entirely predictable. Vox’s writers ignore that and claim that the economy remains strong because of Trump. That inverts things - it’s puttering along despite Trump’s worst impulses and policies that do the opposite. The Trump tax scam didn’t grow anything but the debt. It has accelerated wealth inequality and yet Trump is given credit for an economy that is growing more slowly than under Obama.
The right wing echo chamber and misinformation network was a big winner, because that’s how Trump hopes to remain in power (and avoid indictment).

Only in wingnut world could the person who actually did have the unemployment rate be cut in half and the guy who ran claiming we were in worse shape than the Great Depression be given credit for that. Trumpers refuse to act like Obama has had anything to do with any economic recovery. And just like that, Doug Jones becomes a Profile in Courage for a new generation:
“Having done my best to see through the fog of partisanship, I am deeply troubled by the arguments put forth by the President’s lawyers in favor of virtually unchecked presidential power. In this case, the evidence clearly proves the President used the weight of his office and that of the United States government to seek to coerce a foreign government to interfere in our election for his personal political benefit. The President’s actions placed his personal interests well above the national interests and threatened the security of the United States, our allies in Europe, and our ally Ukraine. His actions were more than simply inappropriate. They were an abuse of power. With impeachment as the only check on such presidential wrongdoing, I felt I must vote to convict on the first charge of abuse of power.”

Here’s Doug Jones, a man running for a full term in November, knowing that he’s likely surrendering his seat to do what is right.
Meanwhile, Joe Manchin isn’t up for reelection for another 4 years, yet he’s so scared of losing then that he’s mumbling about censure and leaving his vote up in the air.
Trump will be the subject of the hashtags and memes. Trump will be the one isolated and having to defend himself. I know some of us think he won’t debate the Democratic candidate but he may have no other choice because an incumbent President who refuses to debate will be treated like a coward.

If Dems want to make a dent in campaigning against the Trump economy, they need to tell voters that it is being done entirely with borrowed money, just like the casinos he bankrupted. I voted for Frank Wolf for Congress once. He was and I let his grandson know this when I worked the polls one day helpful to his constituents. The best Virginia Republican though is John Warner. He’s done everything from opposing Bork’s nomination to SCOTUS to recently saying the Senate should have called witnesses. 93 years old and one of the last former Korean War/WWII vets taht served in the Senate left.
“Listen, if Dems has only gone for a mere censure, instead of leaping to Impeachment, we might have gotten Susan Collins to think about looking at voting for Censure in the Senate, maybe, if the censure wasn’t worded to censurious. “

There is only one action Rush can take to stop my wish for him to die a painful, lingering, and lonely death: if he takes his megaphone and tells the world that everything he said was wrong, vile, and evil and that he repents of all the harm he has done. And that he is donating his wealth to help the poor and the disabled. I will then relent — not in my desire for his death, but in my wish for it to be terrible.

And Rachel really is never outright nasty. Partisan, yes. Rush is an outright asshole who gets his kicks belittling those who happen to be left of center. I had no idea until last night but apparently he mocked Robin Williams’ suicide because according to Dr. Limbaugh, Robin being a left winger made him depressed. It’s that kind of shit that makes me say fuck Rush.

How a Racist President Is Trying to Woo Black Voters
Trump’s use of cash and clemency demonstrate his corrupt intent.
by Nancy LeTourneau, Washington Monthly
Last week the New York Times reported that a Trump ally held an event at which they were handing out cash to black attendees. The transactional (i.e., corrupt) nature of political support in exchange for cash is so deeply Trumpian that it hardly requires commentary.
…
But then came a Trump campaign Super Bowl ad that featured the release of Alice Marie Johnson, a 64-year-old black grandmother from Mississippi, who was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for her role in a drug-trafficking conspiracy. Reality-TV star Kim Kardashian West had lobbied the president for a commutation of her sentence, which he granted in 2018. It will come as no surprise that the commercial was based on several lies.
…Trump has ruled on only 204 clemency requests — 24 approvals and 180 denials. That is the slowest pace in decades.
Just like everything else with Trump, the power of clemency has become a transactional process: you do something for me and I’ll do something for you. That is why the president’s first pardon went to nativist sheriff Joe Arpaio, who had been a vocal Trump supporter.
re: #368 retired cynic
The one that really turned my stomach:
A case that has gotten less attention is the one involving the commutation of Sholom Rubashkin’s sentence. He was the owner of the meatpacking plant in Postville, Iowa that was raided by ICE agents during George W. Bush’s presidency. Rubashkin was later found guilty of bilking lenders out of more than $26 million.
Celebrity attorney Alan Dershowitz, a Trump ally who defended the president at his impeachment trial, got in a pitch for client Sholom Rubashkin during a 2017 visit to the White House to discuss Middle East policy. Dershowitz said he used a few minutes with Trump in the Oval Office to urge clemency for the Iowa kosher meatpacking executive sentenced to 27 years for money laundering…
Rubashkin’s backers included conservative Jews and evangelical Christians, significant strands of Trump’s political coalition. Kushner, an Orthodox Jew, was Rubashkin’s most vocal advocate inside the White House, according to two former officials.
re: #335 KingKenrod
If Dems want to make a dent in campaigning against the Trump economy, they need to tell voters that it is being done entirely with borrowed money, just like the casinos he bankrupted. Trump is borrowing money, squandering it, and when the whole thing collapses he will leave everyone else holding the bag. It’s a simple message.
also, the “wages increasing” and “people lifted out of poverty” is mostly due to the blue state legislatures raising the minimum wage.

Fuck cancer and fuck Limbaugh.
Just because a raging bigot and misogynist is suddenly facing his own mortality doesn’t mean that I have to be kind to him or ignore his past, present, and his legacy of agitprop, hate, and misinformation that helped spawn the likes of Trump and the cult that approves of Trump.
Limbaugh has spent years spewing nonsense about pretty much everything. He lies and obfuscates about health care delivery and funding in the US, and backs the eliminating of Obamacare - which protects those with preexisting conditions from seeing massive premium hikes (and provides millions with coverage where they didn’t have any before thanks to Medicaid expansion that the GOP opposed).

thegreatpoolpondconversion started as some instagram posts and a modest email list to family and friends.
Then I started posting each week’s email here at lgf, edited only slightly to delude myself into believing i’m anonymous (not anymouse).
I hadn’t been watching the page hits until recently.
Over the last three weeks something interesting happened.
The January 19 post has nearly 3,500 hits as of today.
Last week’s - January 26 has nearly 4,600.
I took a look back and noticed we were averaging 800-900 hits a week before then.
Maybe something caught on.
To paraphrase Cleavon Little in Blazing Saddles, “we’re rapidly becoming a big underground success in this town”.
And that’s kind of exciting.
Unless it’s that some bot got a hold of them and opens them up every few seconds just to mess with the stats.

re: #403 Dread Pirate
The reason the GOP hates the idea of a President Pence is because if Pence (and the Cabinet) invoked the 25th against Trump, the base would turn on the GOP and sit out this November’s election out of pure, unadulterated spite.
And Pence has all the charisma of a glass of milk that’s been left sitting on the counter for the last 72 hours.

They know that Pence is unelectable? They know that admitting Trump is a clear and present danger to the nation and is incapable of governing isn’t going to happen? They are complicit in covering up Trump’s criminal conduct and incompetence?

This same situation is currently going on right now in Kansas. The Governor’s tax hikes have resulted in massive revenue that Republicans are now saying is “immoral” for the government to realize. This load of bilk comes straight from the same lackies that cheered the previous Republican Governor’s complete and total fail in Libertarian Economics that resulted in a cash-strapped state mired in budget deficts.
