This film was supposed to be released in August of this year, but owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’ll be in theaters next year.

Judas and the Black Messiah - the story of Fred Hampton, who was targeted by COINTELPRO and assassinated under the initiative of J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI.

re: #3 Dread Pirate Ron

Yesterday I was looking at the San Diego county real estate (residential) figures.

The bottom line is that prices thru July were holding the line… but only because the market supply of houses is way, way, down. There’s now less than a month supply of houses in the lower price ranges. The luxury market still has a few months supply, but that is way down too.

So the house average price is up year over year, and the median price too.

So what is happening - and this harkens back the 1930’s and the Great Depression - is that people who have money can still buy houses, but the number of people who can support such an industry is squeezing down.

And as the weeks march on, this will get worse. Fewer people will be able to move, which then cascades throughout the real estate market.

When the financial collapse happened in 2008, the real estate industry turned downward and that continued for a couple of years. If someone bought a house in 2009 they bought at (or around) the bottom, and at least here in San Diego county such people have seen the past 11 years continual asset appreciation.

What will happen over the next 12 months I do not know. It seems to me that like 2009 we can expect house prices to come down, but by how much I do not know.

Corn-fed Commies.

The Republican Party led by Pete Ricketts is doing a magnificent job of ensuring every up-and-coming voter will despise the Republican Party for the rest of their lives.

From the students’ open letter:

Some teachers have children; all teachers have families. What happens when one of them dies? Some OPS teachers are already preparing for the worst. One teacher, who wished to remain anonymous, wrote that

I miss my kids. I miss my classroom. I miss my colleagues. But going back to school puts my kids, my colleagues, and myself at risk. I am immunocompromised, and I’m scared I’m going to die. In preparation for my return to school, I have filled out a Living Will as well as a Medical Power of Attorney. These things should not be on my “Back to School” list … We are teachers, not martyrs.

Most of us have teachers who, aside from their teaching responsibilities, also act as parents, counselors, and therapists for their students. They are not replaceable, they are humans with families, and in many cases, they are also an integral part of a student’s family away from home.

Well, continuing to flout science, Torrington, Wyo. seeks to recreate the Liberty Bond parades after WW1 ended.

Parade brings community together for Goshen County Fair (Goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

Parade floats cruised down Main Street on Thursday, bringing Goshen County community members together at the annual fair parade.

Goshen County residents lined Main Street to watch parade floats pass by, sharing smiles and waves on Thursday at the annual Goshen County Fair Parade.

Fair Board Vice Chairman Michael McNamee’s voice came over the load speaker to announce the names of parade floats as they passed by the judges’ table at the fair parade. McNamee said the fair is an important event for the community.

Goshen County commission passes resolution speaking out against state’s ‘overblown’ coronavirus orders (Goes to the Casper, Wyo. Star-Tribune, yesterday)

The Goshen County commission passed a resolution Tuesday to urge its constituents to make their own health decisions and indicating it opposes health orders, both at a county and state level, that have been instituted to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The resolution, which is nonbinding and was described by the commission’s chairman as a statement of support for local residents, passed unanimously in a county with just 19 total coronavirus cases. The document encourages residents to “refrain from any county-level virus-related mandates concerning individual health care decisions.”

stunningly stupid idiots.

Just as in the Black Death, conservatives then and conservatives now pack themselves into churches looking for divine intervention to save themselves from their own actions.

While medical science was in a poor state then, even then it was known that simple things like staying away from crowds and sick people would slow the spread of disease.

Neither religion nor conservatism changes very much. Seven hundred years later and they’re doing the same things.

Conservatives won’t change unless it affects them personally (hence the exhortations in the press of a conservative who thought it was a hoax or overblown and got sick from this).

They’re own actions will kill them in huge droves. They will take some of us with them, but the overwhelming majority will be them.

The blame lies squarely on the pastors and politicians who made this into a political issue to grasp power just a tiny bit longer.

Evolution by natural selection does not favour the survival of those individuals or species which will not or cannot change.

The US Constitution requires all Federal funding to be authorised by bills from Congress. Stuff like defense spending gets tacked on to any bill going through the sausage-making process in the Capitol in the hope it will get passed. No biggie, the long-term plan is to fund the production of F-35 fighters in small batches like this over the next couple of decades and this bill was just a convenient bucket to put it in.

And it can be stripped out as an amendment when it goes to the House.

More likely though, the GOP will accuse the Democrats of not really caring about coronavirus relief and conveniently forget to mention that F-35 funding (which could be in its own bill and debated on its own merits).

Parrots across right-wing media outlets from small blogs will start the farm league feeder of propaganda until they get to the Big Show, FOX News Channel.

The people intended for this message will never hear about funding for the F-35 in this bill.

42
Nojay UK  Aug 7, 2020 • 4:45:26am

re: #40 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

It takes time and effort to get a bill up and running, it takes debate and process and committee meetings and there are only so many hours in a day and so many days when Congress is sitting to get all the sausage made that needs to be made. The Founding Slaveowners never envisaged that the US would become as big and as complicated as it ended up and their concepts of budgeting and finance were, well, 18th century at the best, something that contributed to regular financial crises all the way up to and including the Great Depression because of the Constitution.

The F-35 funding is not a contentious issue, the US is spending about a trillion dollars over 40 years or so of design, testing, manufacture, production, training, operation etc. on the F-35 program. It can’t or won’t spaff all that cash out in one big front-loaded lump, it will be paid for in chunks as the years roll by and this is one of the chunks. Sure, if it was contentious, if there was a big difference of opinion on the necessity for funding a particular additional item then it might be stripped out in debate but Both Sides are fine with this project going ahead and getting funded. The presence of this particular funding in this particular bill does make a good Outrage Du Jour though.

If they want the funding so badly, they can put it in the Democrats’ HEROS Act bill, which actually provides useful relief.

Or they can put it in a separate bill.

This is only there to create a talking point for the Republicans to claim Democrats don’t care about economic relief. To quote Rachel Maddow: Watch this space.

Normal countries pass an annual budget where this stuff is authorised. New big ticket items might get their own special bills, but this crazy add stuff to random legislation is just another sign that the US is moribund, tied to an obsolete, unchangeable constitution like a drowning sailor tangled with an anchor.

Performance and process is all, substance is unimportant.

The only “principle” I’ve seen so far in practice by the “Never Trump” crowd is insisting that they’re against the things Trump is doing, except when it’s one of their pet issues. Then they suddenly jump up and declare that as much as one may hate Trump, they “have to admit” that whatever he’s doing to address said issue is “the right thing.”

Fucking predictable Trumpists are predictable. Job figures are misleading at best.

There’s always “job creation” in the summer. It’s always seasonal, it’s always cheap, and it generally never lasts past August. Just like in three months, we’ll be told about the stellar “job creation” in winter…as businesses hire to deal with Christmas shopping.

Oh, I know - to a measure those states are populated by religious right masses, who are using Trump to wage a religious war on their behalf.

This is a totally incorrect analysis of both Birx and Chamberlain.

Chamberlain was neither naive, nor incompetent. The British government and military consensus was that the coming war had to be delayed until Britain had finished rearmament. He was maybe optimistic about how long he could delay the war, but he knew it was coming.

Chamberlain was neither naive, nor incompetent. The British government and military consensus was that the coming war had to be delayed until Britain had finished rearmament. He was maybe optimistic about how long he could delay the war, but he knew it was coming.

There was no more a “consensus” against war than there was one for it. If one wanted to make a case for war with Germany in 1939, they would have found military leaders just as ready to argue Britain’s armed forces were large enough and strong enough to blunt Hitler’s ambitions, just as the peace crowd could find generals and admirals who felt the military was woefully antiquated and threadbare. Even within Parliament the parties were split, with half of each pushing for war and the other half pushing for negotiated settlement. Before the Blitz, Chamberlain and Lord Halifax had a stronger argument for agreeing to a “live and let live” non-aggression treaty with Hitler than Churchill had for going to war.

Chamberlain was not naive for believing he’d negotiated “peace in our time,” as Churchill and his allies would later accuse the man. He was naive for believing that the Reich’s ambitions would stop with a few colonial concessions and an agreement not to interfere in Germany’s continental expansion.

Some of the first productivity metrics were developed in railroad cargo loading. The bosses fired the usual workers and hired immigrants, who wanted to prove themselves.

They all worked really hard for a month to improve previous efficiency but a great collective physical cost, were summarily fired and the old crew rehired

Metrics in hand management presented the rehired workers with the new productivity goals.

The Germans would have eventually turned east and the likely outcome of their eastern campaign would have been similar to what happened in this time line. It also would have allowed the British and French resistance to organize and fight any sort of occupation. That also raises the question of what Asia under a Japanese empire and Africa under Italian control would look like

re: #134 Targetpractice

Before we leave this topic, I remind you that there was one country and one leader who went to war with Hitler without first being invaded or having war declared against it. That country was Britain, and the man was Neville Chamberlain.

Story time:

Two years before we moved here, there was a huge political fight over the proposed water project in town which would float a municipal bond (now paid off early) to purchase reverse osmosis units and replace village-owned lead water lines to the first joint inside a house (not just to the water meter).

The Republican village board chairwoman at the time supported the project, since USDA was paying for 90% of the cost.

That led to fist fights in village meetings, someone sticking a bloody pig’s head on a pole in her yard, vandalism of her property, and the county sheriff sending a deputy to meetings armed (he still was when we moved here).

But it’s those radical leftists who are the real problem.

It’s debatable about how long that “eventually” would have lasted, whether it were a few months or a few years. There’s strong evidence that Hitler only pursued Barbarossa in 1941 because he believed that with the USSR neutralized, Britain would be more willing to enter into a negotiated peace. And that he pushed up the timetable with an eye towards accomplishing such before winter set in. Of course, he also wildly overestimated not only the capabilities of his own forces, but the strength of the Soviet forces that they would face. So he may have pushed forward with the invasion at roughly the same time in a timeline where Britain bowed out of the war.

True: but among Chamberlain’s other failures at Munich, the main one was letting himself be convinced by Hitler that “Germany’s continental expansion” was going to be limited only to “German” regions (like the Sudetenland) which had been “unjustly” detached from the Reich after WWI - rather than the entire continent of Europe (the Fuhrer’s actual plan).

Personally, I think Edouard Daladier (French PM) was every bit as derelict at Munich as Chamberlain: probably worse, since he was only too willing to let the Brits do the “negotiating” in selling out the Czechs, and then simply signing on to the deal with - basically - a Gallic shrug - French commitments to Czechoslovakia (and Britain) notwithstanding.

It’s like if you were watering a garden and you had a number of different hoses and a watering can but they all had multiple holes in them. You can still get some water on the garden regardless, but it’s chaotic and uncontrolled. However, if you have good quality hoses and a sturdy watering can, it’s far easier to cultivate healthy flowers.

The analogy sort of breaks down when one remembers that the scores in sports are evident to everyone as the game goes on, rather than all the points tallied at the very end. Even the teams most committed to fighting as though they’re the underdog eventually have to acknowledge that they’re kicking the other team’s ass black and blue. Otherwise you start crushing morale, telling the players that no matter how good they’re playing, they’re still not doing enough to beat the other side.

Nebraska is entangled in New York’s fight against the NRA’s alleged fraud, because Wayne LaPierre made several stop-offs at the NRA’s expense in Nebraska. Those flights were to pick up or drop off his niece with family. Mr. LaPierre states the flights were appropriate and related to NRA work.

omaha.com

LaPierre is quoted in the lawsuit attributing the Nebraska flights to his niece’s work with his wife on the NRA’s Women’s Leadership Forum. Several Nebraska flights are detailed in the suit, including one in January 2017.

That’s when LaPierre allegedly authorized a private jet to pick up his niece’s husband in North Platte on the way to Las Vegas for a Safari Club convention.

“LaPierre testified his niece ‘was working the entire time’ attending various donor meetings at the convention, so he authorized a flight to bring her husband ‘over [to] help babysit the child while the mother was working because there was nobody else to do it,’ ” according to the suit.

The lawsuit says LaPierre also authorized a private flight to fly the husband back to Nebraska two days before his niece was ready to return.

In the same article, they quote the Louisiana Attorney General as saying New York’s Attorney General is engaged in a “political hit job.”

As veterans and VA staff report USPS prescription delays, officials say to order early (Radio dot com)

With the thirty-day restriction and limitations on when I can refill my epilepsy medication, I’m fooked.

The vast majority of Department of Veterans Affairs prescriptions are fulfilled by mail. But as U.S. Postal Service delays mount, more and more veterans are reporting long wait times to receive critical medication and VA staff says the problem is only growing.

In fiscal year 2016, VA’s mail-order pharmacy processed nearly 120 million outpatient prescriptions and VA provides about 80% of all its outpatient prescriptions to veterans by mail using seven “highly automated pharmacies,” according to the department. The other 20% are filled at local VA medical facilities.

VA’s mail-order pharmacy system, the Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy (CMOP), processes nearly half a million prescriptions daily and each working day, more than 330,000 veterans receive a package of prescriptions in the mail. Veterans who live further from VA medical facilities, especially in rural and remote areas of the country, often depend on mail-order prescriptions.

More than two dozen veterans and more than half a dozen VA employees who work in department pharmacies nationwide reported delays for mail-order prescriptions to Connecting Vets. Those veterans and staff spoke on condition of anonymity because they said they feared retaliation from the department or stigma for the medications they use. They provided documents showing medication shipping delays.

Missouri man killed in Pearl Harbor attack laid to rest (Stars & Stripes)

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Mo. — Nearly eight decades after he was killed in the attack at Pearl Harbor that launched the U.S. into World War II, a Missouri man has been laid to rest next to his parents.

KYTV-TV reports that the remains of Navy Seaman 1st Class Orval Austin Tranbarger of Mountain View were buried Wednesday. The TV station said people lined highways and streets from Willow Springs to the cemetery in Mountain View to pay their respects.

“He’s somebody they obviously didn’t know, who was well before many of their times. It showed they love America and they love people that support America, the troops, him being one of them. Happy to see him get a welcome home,” Army Veteran Brandon Wright said.

Not exactly on point, but after reading Erik Larson’s “In the Garden of Beasts”, a recurring theme throughout was just how many people would not/could not/refused to recognize what was happening in Germany, and the expectation that Hitler/Nazis would start to behave rationally as they consolidated power domestically or that moderate voices inside Germany would act as a brake on Hitler’s ambitions.

Maybe. I read somewhere that when the Germans planned Operation Sealion, the invasion of Britain (the “Keep Calm and Carry On” invasion), it was thought that the Germans would not or could not hold Britain indefinitely. The best they could have hoped for is a satrapy.

Which is exactly what the US is now vis-a-vis Russia. We’re a Russian satrrapy. Putin doesn’t need to invade and in fact cannot invade. He just needs a good bitch or two. Trump and the Republicans fill that role.

The Republicans haven’t had a new idea in decades, maybe ever. They just keep renaming and recycling the same shit over and over. It’s always the same thing that we’re all supposed to be terrified of. (…cue scary music…) “Scary liberals are coming to take your guns and Jesus and murder the unborn while they’re being born! They want to give YOUR tax dollars to poors and minorities who HAVEN’T EARNED IT!!! If you get healthcare “they” will too, VOTE NO!!!!! ” And as of late all those ads with this shit for content are all dark in color, black and white or altered to be darker than they are. All they have ever had is fear, I think the public, at least most of us, are fucking over it now. Even their “new” commercials, are exactly the same as the ads they pulled for not being fresh enough just a week or two ago. You can only sell shit in so many different packages, it all still smells and feels like shit, no matter what the package looks like. They have not one solid policy that is well thought out and constructed to help anyone but CEOs and family members steal more money “legally” (or not as we see with the NRA. Which makes me giggle out loud that they are a sinking ship. Good Riddance)

re: #211 Targetpractice

The analogy sort of breaks down when one remembers that the scores in sports are evident to everyone as the game goes on, rather than all the points tallied at the very end. Even the teams most committed to fighting as though they’re the underdog eventually have to acknowledge that they’re kicking the other team’s ass black and blue. Otherwise you start crushing morale, telling the players that no matter how good they’re playing, they’re still not doing enough to beIat the other side.

THIS.
It’s soul-crushing. It’s worse than that. When professional coaches tell their teams to “do better”, they usually give very specific examples of what team members are doing or not doing in their specific positions and responsibilities. On the net, talking about politics, it doesn’t work like this.

Most people are giving naive thoughts about what we should do. Like following a sporting event or calling sports talk radio and saying, “My team should PLAY HARDER!” Most of us “aren’t in the room where it happens” or even close. But we are asked to TRY HARDER because we must pretend we’re fifty points down. It’s soul-destroying. (In real life, if your basketball team is down by 50 points, and you’re a player, prepare your resume.)

I used to listen to a “progressive” rock station in the early 70’s before it was taken over and formatted. One afternoon they were playing some long drawn out Black Sabbath song and the DJ got bored with it, so he flipped the turntable up to 45 rpm to finish the song. It was exactly what was needed.

There are only two ways to vote for president
Biden
Trump

One of these two will be the next president

If you are a “never Trumper” then you must vote for biden.
Abstaining is a vote for trump
Unless you vote positively for Biden, You are directly or indirectly voting for trump and therefore you are not a never Trumper.

Yup!

Matt Lewis:
“Why is it that I, an outspoken Never Trump conservative well versed in Trump’s failings, am unwilling to pull the lever for Uncle Joe?”

Lewis is playing dishonest games here. This a reference to Joseph “Uncle Joe” Stalin. Lewis is attempting to paint Biden, a vanilla centrist, as a dangerous commie. And yes, Never-Trumper means ensuring that Trump is not re-elected. And in this tweet Lewis is, most obviously, not in that camp either. I smell rodent copulation.

Yes, there will be angry people if Trump and his enablers are charged.

But enough of them will read the charging documents, look at the evidence, and their anger will will to some extent dissipate. Then they’ll be angry at us, crying out “why didn’t you warn us, we wouldn’t have stood for it if we’d known, it’s the D’s fault we didn’t know”. But deep in their heart of hearts, a substantial percentage will realize we did warn them, and it was their choice to ignore those warnings.

Two Wyoming youth who attended a baseball tournament in Chadron earlier this month have tested positive for the coronavirus, resulting in an alert from health officials to the public.

During Thursday’s daily briefing from Panhandle Public Health District, officials announced that the Cal Ripken 11 and Under State Tournament, held July 31-Aug. 2, in Chadron as a community exposure site.

starherald.com

Tabi Prochazka, deputy director health promotions and preparedness, said organizers had worked with health officials, implementing different measures and posting signage advising of the need to social distance, wear mask and other preventative measures. However, she said, the case highlights the need for people to follow social distancing measures, such as staying in groups of eight and distancing six feet from other groups. When attending events, Prochazka urged people to follow health guidelines so that events didn’t have to be announced as community exposure sites.

The worst, and I mean the ABSOLUTE WORST background shopping Christmas song that I ever heard, was a slow, romantic ballad styling of (I kid you not) “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.”

It went on and on and on I think for the entire time I was in the store.

And another Never-Trumper weighs in at The Bulwark:

[Embedded content]

I recall Mona Charen from her vitriolic anti-Clinton columns in the 1990’s. This time she supports either Duckworth or Demings as VP picks who would not harm the ticket. Either nominee would be fine with me — my sister has a close friend who is an attorney and she has been on the Demings’ bandwagon ever since the impeachment trial. Duckworth may help with Midwestern states. Either woman would be a good representation for the future of the party. All I want is someone who can boost Biden’s chances.

Trump is doing all he can to make the pandemic in the US and the resulting economic dislocation someone else’s fault. It’s crucial for him to make sure that voters see this as China’s failing and not his. His supporters, fed by RW media and GOP lies certainly see it that way. He has never been forced to take responsibility for any misdeeds or errors in his life — and so far, he has never been truly punished for his crimes. November is our last opportunity to make sure that this time he begins to pay — because there will be no second chance.

I have always been a glass half-empty type person and have learned repeatedly that optimism never bears out, especially when there will be so many opportunities due to the pandemic to suppress the vote. Shutting polling places, evicting people so that they can no longer voter, slowing down the mail — all can lead to an electoral victory for the worst person to ever serve as President.

Dismukes, for those who have been in a cave so long they think the South won that war, is the Alabama representative who, on the weekend Alabama celebrated the life and mourned the death of John Lewis, decided to go instead to a birthday party for the founder of the Ku Klux Klan.

On Thursday, Montgomery County DA Daryl Bailey revealed that Dismukes - who wears a Confederate battle flag on his lapel instead of Old Glory - was charged with stealing thousands of dollars from the flooring company where he works. How many thousands we don’t know, but the prosecutor said it is waaaaaay more than the $2,500 required to make it first-degree theft.

Okay, I’ve heard about this story, but I didn’t notice this particular detail…

At the time the elder Peterson was flown out of country for treatment, Mikhaila Peterson told the National Post father was put in a medically induced coma because Russian doctors have “the guts to medically detox someone from benzodiazepines.”.

Now, I had read previous profiles of Peterson, which noted by way of his house art that he had a fondness for Soviet propaganda, but… Naming your daughter Mikhaila?!?!?! With Peterson as the surname!??!?! That’s like being named Quisling Brezhnev.

The act was originally proposed and passed by Republicans in the FDR administration, so of course they would hypocritically violate it.

That said, it doesn’t have a criminal penalty. Reading it, the Office of the Special Counsel follows up on violations.

When it was updated under the Obama Administration, it added disciplinary penalties in addition to removal (the only penalty it had before 2012).

OSC last took action against Kellyanne Conway for using her official position to attack Democratic candidates. The OSC recommended her removal; Donald Trump said he wouldn’t do that because it violated her free speech rights.

Per The WaPo: White House, Democrats argue over trillions of dollars as they try to revive coronavirus relief bill talks

“Basically, what’s happening is Mr. Meadows is from the Tea Party … and they don’t want to spend the necessary money,” Schumer said of the former North Carolina congressman, who was a leader of a faction of anti-spending rabble-rousers when he served in the House.

Pelosi said for the second day in a row that Republicans don’t give “a damn” about people in need.

For their part, Republicans accused Democrats of trying to get a political outcome instead of a deal, with the election approaching.

“Rather than be part of the solution, they have chosen to be part of the problem,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) said on Twitter on Friday.

The Democrats are going to get blamed for all of this because they’ve been so vocal about trying to get something meaningful done. As you said, the republicans are going to let it all fall apart out of neglect and then let Trump announce that he’s going to raid Social Security and give money to their rich buddies. What a fucking evil mess.

That’s what the Hatch Act addresses. It was first passed when WPA administrators and workers were using their positions to stump for Democratic policies and politicians of the time. Prior to the act being passed, it was not illegal.

The act has been challenged numerous times in court and has always been upheld.

The problem is violation of the act is only remedied by someone bringing a complaint and the OSC making a recommendation on that complaint.

In the past, Hatch Act violations resulted in clearance (there was no violation), resignation, or removal. In Donald Trump’s case, he won’t remove people for violating it, and there is not another legal remedy for it (though certain officials could be impeached, then the Senate won’t remove people).

Just clicked over to RCP and was looking at Trump’s approval ratings. He’s at -11.9 in the most recent average, but that’s with a Rassmussen outlier at -3. Take that one out and he’s at -13 on the average. Throw out the high (19 points under water) and low, and he’s still at -12.4. Now, I’m not an expert, but that seems like very bad numbers for a incumbent in an election year

Well, they haven’t quite gotten to the point of the Khmer Rouge ordering people out of the cities to starve and killing everyone with glasses, or the Hutus in Rwanda passing out machetes for people to chop up their friends and neighbours.

However, trying to withhold aid during an epidemic ranks right up there.

A dark rum. I’ve also seen some very dark dessert wines, but the thing is that the black shirt behind the glass means it’s going to look dark regardless.

Or with the amount of liquid in the glass, probably a whatever-and-cola. I’m fond of tequila-and-coke myself.

The GOP’s anti-government ideology has gotten so extreme by now that it’s interfering with the essential government function of disaster relief/epidemic control.

Republicans literally have no other use for government than to get in charge of it so they can steal everything in sight while cutting taxes on the rich and deregulating businesses.

It’s a silly little thing, but I wasn’t kidding about the Best for Last Club. Alas, I’ll never be able to join.

Once this blasted pandemic goes away, oh in about a decade from now (otherwise known as next January) I may very well end up doing that!
Maine and NH are almost certainly the next two I’ll be visiting seeing how I was considering doing that on my original trip that I had to cancel in March at the last minute because of the outbreak. Also, I’ve learned since posting that list of 6 that I may have technically been to Alaska during a family cruise sometime when I was really young, so perhaps I can cross that off (does it count if i was too young to remember it? I just barely remember Hawaii a few years later). That just leaves Utah, then South Dakota and from there I could wrap it up with North Dakota for last.

Harleys everywhere, masks nowhere: Sturgis draws thousands

STURGIS, S.D. — Thousands of bikers poured into the small South Dakota city of Sturgis on Friday as the 80th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally rumbled to life despite fears it could lead to a massive coronavirus outbreak.

The rally could become one of the largest public gatherings since the pandemic began, with organizers expecting 250,000 people from all over the country to make their way through Sturgis during the 10-day event. That would be roughly half the number of previous years, but local residents — and a few bikers — worry that the crowds could create a “super-spreader” event.

Many who rode their bikes into Sturgis on Friday expressed defiance at the rules and restrictions that have marked life in many locales during the pandemic. People rode from across the country to a state that offered a reprieve from coronavirus restrictions, as South Dakota has no special limits on indoor crowds, no mask mandates and a governor who is eager to welcome visitors and the money they bring.

“Screw COVID,” read the design on one T-shirt being hawked. “I went to Sturgis.”
