After the Virginia Tech shooting the swat teams are supposed to confront the shooter instead of waiting around. The 2 police officers who arrived in Salt Lake went right into the mall, and found the shooter being held at bay by the off duty police officer.

Yes:
"Many American states have few strictures on gun ownership. Gun control largely fizzled as a national political issue, as Democrats, who have in the past promoted stricter gun laws, have bowed to the well organised pro-gun opposition. The Obama administration supports the renewal of an expired federal ban on assault weapons."

All it would take to stop this is a single armed citizen on the inside. As he is taking hostages and the chaos of the events unfolding, just one citizen with one shot could stop this. Actually, it never would happen in the first place as those with murderous intent such as this never storm into police stations shooting now do they? Of course not. You target the unarmed groups that are unable to provide any resistance.
If I am to be murdered in cold blood , I would at the very least like the opportunity to contest that decision.

You don't engage in this type of activity without two factors:
1) Anger towards those he is killing - most likely he feels victimized by those he is shooting. Attaining victim status is the central point of leftist ideology to justify every action of those who commit evil.
2) Narcissism - what I want is superior to your want to live. I am supreme. This inherently precludes any belief in a higher power as people that believe that they will ultimately be held accountable for their actions, in this life or the next, tend not to engage in these types of behavior.

Mayor Bloomberg heaped praise on outspoken activist the Rev. Al Sharpton Thursday, calling him a "calming influence on the city."
Bloomberg, who is running for a third term, showed his reverence for the reverend before speaking at the preacher's annual National Action Network Convention.
"In all fairness, Al Sharpton has been an awful lot more of a calming influence on the city and helper to the city than most people give him credit for," said Bloomberg.
"I don't agree with him everything but on balance I've become, over the years, a Sharpton fan," the mayor added.

Helped incite anti-Jewish riots in Crown Heights, New York in 1991 in which a Jewish student was murdered
Convicted of libel for his role in the Tawana Brawley hoax
Incited anti-Semites against Freddy's Mart which was burned by one of Sharpton's followers, killing seven people

I disagree.
People who believe in a "higher power" -- God, Allah, you name it -- seem to have mental breakdowns and go nuts at about the same rate as everybody else. Yes, in theory, moral responsibility ought to accompany a belief in a higher power, but humans will be humans -- flawed and frail -- and mental instability is an equal-opportunity exploiter.
We could sit here listing off all the believers who have killed through history, as well as all the non-believers who have killed. In both cases, the list would be essentially endless.

I'm afraid the Age of Reason is being replaced by the Age of Emotion. And that's scary.....
The modern politically correct saw is that no emotion is ever "wrong."
Combine that with the fact that nothing is more easy or more instant than to feel an emotion -- and the result is that all sorts of emotional, brainless acts are explained away by a sea of underdeveloped minds, stuck in their sophistry with their adolescent reasoning abilities.
Scary indeed.

After Great Britain banned guns, knife-related crimes went up by like 1000%. Now they are looking at banning knives over a certain length.
If you are in your home over there, and are confronted by a home invader, you have an absolute duty to retreat. Forget about using a knife. If you injure him, even with, say, a broom handle, you would be in serious trouble.

It's almost always the diagnosis after the fact, when the shooter is left alive, that is.......
Not that it's worth keeping them around to find out, IMO.
This is what baffles me about our society. If a person kills another for some "sane" reason, e.g. he stole my horse so I shot him, one might reasonably assume that person to only be a public hazard to horse thieves. But if one kills by "reason of insanity" that person poses a general hazard to the greater population.
We all know which one is permanently removed from society... :-/

A gunman entered an immigration services center in downtown Binghamton on Friday and went on a shooting rampage, killing as many as 13 people and taking as many as 41 people hostage, before being shot dead himself, according to CBS News correspondent Bob Orr.
It's not yet known whether the gunman killed himself or was shot by police.
The hostage situation is believed to be over and officials have scheduled a 4:30 p.m. news conference.
Two men have been escorted from the scene at the American Civic Association building in restraints, but it is not known if they are connected to the shooting, reports Orr.
Two handguns were recovered at the scene, said a law enforcement official who was not authorized to speak about details of an ongoing hostage response and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Experts Explain Why N.Korea Wants to Conduct Long-Range Missile Test
The United States, Japan and South Korea believe the launch is a cover for a long-range missile test.
Experts say there are several possible reasons why North Korea is launching a rocket. Jack Garrity, the executive director of the Asia Society, in Washington, says the government in Pyongyang wants to send a message overseas. "The prime objective is to show their independence to the outside world, and to make a point of undermining both the spirit and agreements of the six-party talks," he said.
Nicholas Eberstadt, a researcher at the American Enterprise Institute, believes there is also a domestic political reason for the launch. "[launching the rocket] stands to indicate the success of the regime's military-first politics program, and to strengthen the position of certain groups within the government," he said.
Another question is how a North Korean rocket test would affect the six-party talks on ending Pyongyang's nuclear program. Jack Garrity says it might add urgency to the negotiations. "If anything, it probably gives a little bit of strength to the six-party talks, because all of the countries concerned realize that this is an ongoing issue and among the six parties, nobody really wants to see this occur, except for the North Koreans," he said.
But Eberstadt says the six-party talks are dead. "The six-party talks are pathetic. The six-party talks have been a sort of a zombie for the last four years, while the North Korean government has moved from one nuclear stage to a more advanced nuclear stage to yet a more advanced nuclear stage," he said.
Don't you just love it when two experts say the direct opposite things?

Interesting question. On top of that, the irony/hypocrisy of these guys getting protection - using taxpayer dollars - means those dollars are not available to pay additional police to protect the public in general.
So let's recap: These guys use taxpayer dollars to provide security for themselves, at the expense of using those dollars for additional police. And, by the way, then support/pass laws prohibiting their constituents from defending themselves.
It's abominable.

His reputation took a blow in 1987 when he was the spokesman for Tawana Bradley, an African-American teenager who accused a group of white men of rape -- a charge a grand jury deemed a hoax. In later years Sharpton has refashioned himself as a more mature spokesman for the downtrodden. He ran unsuccessfully for president of the United States in 2004.

See JS 249, that could have been one of the people who got escorted out. It's probably best to give this the 24 hr rule before we try and make any determinations of what caused this.
And I am giving this the 24 hour rule, just asking a question that never seems to get asked by the FMSM even when given more than credible evidence.

Obama is the president. It could be worse.
That's Slim Shady Al Sharpton. The man had no problems spreading the Brawley hoax and increasing racial tensions there or following the Crown Heights riots. The man is a menace no matter how much people (particularly Sharpton and the press) try to rehabilitate his image. He never did pay up on the damages owed to Steven Pagones.

Here's how to stop all gun violence:
1- Take those same laws that have made illegal drugs impossible to get on the streets and apply them to guns.
2- Make it illegal to use a gun for a crime. Then when somebody wants to go on a killing rampage, they won't use a gun for fear of breaking the law.
3- Stop blaming criminals for crime and start locking up the real cause of crime: our society. Since our society is made up of about 300 million people, when somebody commits a crime, lock up a portion of the society that drove that person to commit the crime. With any luck, in a few years society will be in prison and the "criminals" will all be on the outside, perhaps doing macrame or learning knitting. Whatever it is that criminals do when society isn't forcing them to commit crimes.

The Way to Win the North Korean Nuclear Game
Resolving the North Korean nuclear issue is only possible if China’s attitude changes or if a military solution can be used. However, a military solution is only possible when the exact location of North Korea’s plutonium or nuclear weapons can be detected, which has not thus far been possible.
Hence, China holds one key to resolving the North Korea nuclear issue, not the Bush administration or Obama administrations. Unless China understands the importance of building a relationship with South Korea rather than the Kim Jong Il regime, the North Korea nuclear issue will never come to an end.
So, “Why did the United States attempt to solve the issue with North Korea diplomatically?” It is because diplomatic approach was the only effort, although unrealistic, that the U.S. could have made. The U.S., rather than confronting the limitations of diplomatic negotiations, held on to an unrealistic hope called ‘the possibility of a diplomatic solution’.
The U.S., with its unrealistic hope in hand, gave in again and again without being willing to try out a different strategy.
The Obama administration surely will be faced with the same problem. People may expect a sudden change as a new administration comes to office, but the fundamental problem will not change.
The Obama administration will attempt high level negotiations specifically focused on North Korea issues. However, the U.S. needs to remember that North Korea has been using the Six Party Talks to obtain what it needs to rebuild its regime. That is North Korean strategy: maintaining a safe distance, making others believe that they can negotiate while never negotiating.

These murder sprees make me so mad, I cannot see straight. Of course I have compassion and offer prayers for the innocent murdered and wounded, but this kind of senseless murder can easily be stopped, by arming the citizenry. It scared the hell out of Hitler when it came to Switzerland, and the Japanese, who bombed Pearl Harbor instead of a land invasion of the mainland US. If most of us were armed, and I would not object a bit to folks carrying them on the hip, exposed, like the police do, this crap would never reach these extremes. Sure, some nuts will still take shots, but they will be stopped instantly, not a double digit death toll of innocent, helpless victims.
Take a good look at Switzerland's gun policy. Our Founding Fathers got it, and guaranteed it to us. It seems it is time for the people to demand that right back.
It is the liberal government who is responsible for the murders of these folks today. This did not have to happen, and it would not have, if our legislators had a single functioning brain cell between them.

President Obama held a much ballyhooed town hall in Strasbourg, France, on Friday, touted by the White House as an outreach to Europeans on the second leg of the president's "listening" tour.
But the first person he called on was an American -- and the third, too. By the end of the hourlong session, not a single French citizen got to ask the U.S. president a question.

These bastards want recognition and notoriety. We should deny them that. Burn their manifestos and videos. Condemn them to obscurity. That is the probably the only way to truly hurt a psychopath.

It seems to me that a lot of the liberal objection to armed citizens is that their whole agenda is based on NOT accepting responsibility for anything- "it's Bushes fault", "it's society's fault", etc.etc.etc. Accepting the responsibility for your own defense is part of an attitude that they cannot comprehend. The president's e-mail list of 13-million resulted in just 114,000 individual pledges — a response rate of less than 1 percent. Party workers secured another 100,000 signatures by hitting the streets. The DNC arrived at its 642,000 figure by making three photocopies of each petition so that every signer's senators and representative could get one.
DNC spokesperson Natalie Wyeth responded: "This effort was designed to give our supporters the tools to influence their elected officials. Of course we delivered a pledge to each of their members of Congress — 642,000 pledges. That's what we said we were delivering and that's what we did."
When asked about the impression in the DNC press release that there were 642,000 unique pledges, she offered no response.

But the Chinese leader was negative about Security Council sanctions if the North puts a satellite into orbit as it claims.
On the denuclearization of the North, the two leaders agreed to work closely together to acheive a verifiable and complete dismantlement of the North's nuclear programs through the six-party talks.

Wow. This is the first I've heard of this. It's so hard to imagine someone seeing mass murder as their only option to whatever it is that's bothering them. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out the killer had mental problems.
re: #297 LGoPs
I've often wondered if we really are seeing an explosion of violent insanity or is it the fact that instantaneous 24/7 news coverage magnifies what was always out there in the past (weighted for smaller popoulations in the past of course).........
I just finished reading a book about the New Madrid earthquakes. The violence in towns along the Mississippi during the 19th century was incredible. I remember reading accounts from homesteaders, and how people wouldn't hesitate to murder a family to jump their claim.
Despite any claims to a higher calling, news is a business. Violence sells. I think we get a distorted view of how dangerous things are because the media highlight violent stories.

Meanwhile, inside the Beltway...
Gosh, what a surprise.

Interesting - the headline says the military's been put on full alert, but it doesn't specifically say that anywhere in the article. It even talks about SK being willing to send an envoy to NK. The only possible reference in the article is:
As North Korea's planned rocket launch could occur today at the earliest, the government is looking into all possible countermeasures.
Not sure what to make of all this, but one thing's for certain: this could get very bad, very fast.

re: #362 buzzsawmonkey
There will always be people who cannot handle responsibility. Arguably, all of us can't handle responsibility in some aspect of our lives.
But we do not become better at handling responsibility by being given less of it, because by having less responsibility we have less practice at being responsible.
Being responsible means having more opportunities to screw up--which means more practice at dealing with frustration, failure or disappointment, and therefore more likelihood of being armored against being broken by it.
If we give away all responsibility for protection and civility to the government, we absolve ourselves of the need to practice these things. If we hand over to the government the management of our money, our career choices, our lives, we are making the choice to become Eloi handing ourselves over to Morlocks.
There will probably be an uptick of ugly incidents if gun ownership becomes less circumscribed, simply because some people will have less practice in behaving responsibly. But it is a step towards the society as a whole taking back its birthright of individual responsibility from those who now hold it but should never have been entrusted with it.
Agreed.
But their will also be a corollary pressure. More responsible people will have and carry firearms. The chances of someone who means to do harm of running into an armed citizen will go up.
John Lott has done good work in showing that the higher the number of legal firearms, crime and incidents go down.

I'm afraid the Age of Reason is being replaced by the Age of Emotion. And that's scary.....
Age of Reason? That was at the time of John Locke. I have philosophical texts that break the predominant philosophies down by these kind of "ages". The founders were alive at the so called Age of Enlightenment, which was also very much an age of reason. Jefferson explicitly put reason first.
If you think about Clinton and Bush, neither of them were about reason. Clinton was about emotion and Bush about faith.
However, I agree with you, today we are in an age of emotion, which is the sure road to hell, because emotions don't build bridges, solve math equations or cure diseases. We need reason for that.
Philosophically speaking, the two dominating philosophies today are postmodernism and pragmatism. Neither of which is good. We need to go back to a *principled* age of reason.

Yeah, the Obama legal types know that this is a mess (one of the left's own creation might I add for pushing a legal theory that has no rational basis in US law, common law, or international law), and it was easy for them to do when Bush was in office, but now that they're holding the bag, they are starting to realize that this policy is asinine and would drown the courts in baseless claims that have no business belonging in US civilian courts in the first place. So, I fully expect them to drag the issue out until after they're gone from office, leaving the decision to be made by others.
As for the ankle, it's doing better. It's in an ortho-boot, so I can hobble around. No real pain to speak of, so that's a good thing. Everyone can't quite believe that I didn't feel more pain from breaking it (docs at the ER were trying to get me to commit to pain meds). Well there's groveling, and then there's groveling with style.
A band of vikings invaded part of northern France and the king decided to buy them off. Their leader would get to the the Duke of the province, hereinafter named Normandy, if they would convert to Christianity and swear fealty to him. The mass conversion was fun, but the new Duke of Normandy had to kiss the king's feet. So he picked up the king by the ankles and raised them to face level and kissed the feet.

China is milking this for their gain. If they consider it is not in Chinese interests for NoKo to launch the missile, they will leash Kim Jong Il. On the other hand, they may want the test to go ahead just to see what the US will do. For sure the US & Chinese are talking about this. What they are saying, I have no idea.
I think you are right. The Chinese have nothing to gain by acting here. It is a good test of Obama--they just have to sit back and watch. Then the NoKos will have strongly worded letters in several languages.

I can imagine the conversation:
OBAMA: Look, I'm working as fast as I can to turn the US into a socialist utopia, just like your fine country. This missile test will bring the America First people out of the woodwork and I don't need that.
HU: Gotcha, we'll get Kim to simmer down or support you in filing useless paperwork.

Great link. I'd bet you're right about Obama and Lee discussing this, but not sure what Obama's position might have been. And China's "not opposed" stance is a little weak for my taste, but it's sure better than nothing.
My guess about what the Chinese statement means:
The US told the Chinese, "We have to respond to this missile test. If you insist on using your veto on the UNSC, we will have no choice but to intercept the missile."China to US: "Ok, we'll let you bring it to the UNSC, so long as you don't intercept."
These statements are more about aligning the positions of all the other interested parties, (US, China, South Korea, Japan, Russia & Taiwan) than they are about deterring the NoKos.

Good point. The full decision is here.
The court applied the Boumediene standards to detainees held in Afghanistan. They note that many of those held in Bagram were captured outside Afghanistan and held in Bagram, but IMO, that opens the can of worms to extend to all prisoners held in Bagram.
What this essentially means is that terrorists captured outside the US are going to get habeas rights, regardless of existing law pre-Boumediene, which IMO was a clear misreading of US and international law.

Reserve soldier sues UW, alleges discrimination
Employed by UW as an electrician since 1992, Army Reserve Lt. Col. James Lukehart had risen in the ranks of the university's facilities department and was working as a maintenance manager when he was ordered to deploy to Iraq in June 2006.Before he went overseas, a group of his coworkers had told him he would be "engaging in immoral, if not illegal, action" if he went to Iraq as ordered, Lukehart asserts in court documents. Still, the reservist went to war less than three weeks after receiving notice that he'd be deployed.
According to military news reports, Lukehart served as an executive officer in an engineering brigade stationed at Ballad Air Base, 70 miles north of Baghdad. Among Lukehart's duties while deployed, according to an August 2007 edition of the Camp Anaconda Times, was the construction of a water-treatment plant in rural Iraq.
Hoping to return to work in September 2007, Lukehart found that his manager had launched an investigation into allegations of misconduct made against him while serving overseas, according to court papers.

On a different note -- there was a Canadian/Syrian (held duel citizenship), and who was on a world "trip", on the way back to Canada, the plane landed in New York; the American authorities were suspicious about his "friends"; eventually they flew him back to Syria. Next thing he's claiming he was tortured. Eventually he's able to get a "settlement" from Canadian courts in excess of 10 million dollars. I am still incredulous (but maybe this is how Canadian "laws" operate) -- from what I could discover the authorities were never able to ascertain whether or not the allegations of "torture" were true or false (and how can such things be verified? especially when dealing with Syrians? just an utter travesty...) And now there are others who are alleging, "I was tortured!"

There are always difficulties writing vers d'occasion, particularly when it's for a fast-moving thread.
I find that if I can't get something cranked out by about post #150-175, it either gets buried or it gets posted just about when everybody jumps to the next thread. The challenge is rarely the piece itself so much as getting it done "in time." Exceptions, of course, for inspirations which just happen to hit farther down on a thread.
Anyway, there's usually at least one dodgy bit of scansion or slightly questionable rhyme when working under those constraints, but it is the restrictions which create the challenge.
Most definitely. I try to get topical comments in by comment #100, otherwise it's the law of diminishing returns. My best comment today (content-wise, not humor-wise) was #181 on the previous thread, and as a result of being slow off the mark, it had a much lesser impact.
Timing is everything.

re: #500 Ward Cleaver
Hey what ever happened in that case where the guy set himself on fire in Red Square at UW? Did they ever figure out why he did it?
Former custodian ID'd as man who set himself on fire at UW last week
The King County Medical Examiner's Office has released the name of a man who died Thursday after setting himself on fire in the University of Washington's Red Square. In Soo Chun, 61, a former UW custodian, died at Harborview Medical Center from second- and third-degree burns over 90 percent of his body.
According to UW spokesman Norm Arkans, Chun had worked for the UW's Facilities Services from December 2005 to early summer of this year. He immigrated to the U.S. from Korea in 1977 and became a naturalized citizen in 1982.
After several "confrontational, but not necessarily physical" altercations with co-workers in June, Chun was reassigned from his usual work site in Padelford Hall.
Soon after those incidents, which Arkans said made Chun's co-workers "uncomfortable," Chun requested and was granted several weeks' vacation, after which he did not return to work.

One seriously pissed UW (University of Washington, Seattle) Alumi here.
What's even more Stalinist about this whole affair is this:
Through his attorney, Sidney Strong, Lukehart alleges that the university gave him no notice that he was under investigation. Confronted by Lukehart, the university even declined to say what the allegations had been made.
The university "refused to provide him with any statement of the charges made against him, instead insisting that (Lukehart) had no need to know either the allegations made against him or the source of those allegations," Strong said in court documents filed earlier this month in King County Superior Court.
What part of the 6th Amendment does the UofW think doesn't apply in this instance?
And am I reading correctly that at least in part the allegations of misconduct are what he did while in Iraq?

re: #542 alegrias
Arar's rendition
On September 26, 2002, during a stopover in New York City en route from a family vacation in Tunisia to Montreal, Arar was detained by the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service. The INS was acting upon information supplied by the RCMP.[18] When it became clear he was going to be deported, Arar requested he be deported to Canada; though he had not visited Syria since his move to Canada, he retained Syrian citizenship as Syria does not permit the renunciation of citizenship. Canadian (initially) and American officials have labelled his transfer to Syria as a deportation, but critics have called the removal an example of rendition for torture by proxy, as Syria's government is infamous for its torture of detainees. Despite the recent public rhetoric, at the time of Arar's deportation, Syria was working closely with the United States on the War on Terror. In November 2003, Cofer Black, then counterterrorism coordinator at the State Department and former director of counterterrorism at the CIA, was quoted as saying "The Syrian government has provided some very useful assistance on al Qaeda in the past." [19] In September 2002, the Bush Administration opposed the enactment of the "Syria Accountability Act" citing effectiveness of current sanctions and the ongoing diplomacy in the region. In addition, the administration noted the cooperation and support by Syria in fighting al-Qaida as a reason for its opposition to the "Syria Accountability Act".[20]
During the "war on terror" Black played a "leading role in many of the [CIA]'s more controversial programs, including the rendition and interrogation of al-Qaeda suspects and the detention of some of them in secret prisons [outside the USA]."[19]
Was Cofer Black the idiot?

Well- I'm not sure if it speaks to the theory of 0bama's desire to nationalize the economy or not, just that private business doesn't like the fine print. Whether that's intentionally because 0bama doesn't want them to take the money is, I think, not the point. But I do agree- it's good that business is backing away.

Lawfare.... first Gitmo terrorists were deemed to have habeas rights. Now, terrorists and detainees in Bagram prison in Afghanistan have been deemed by a court to have habeas rights. That means detainees there have access to US courts (the DC Circuit Court).
This is asinine and throws centuries of law on its head, to say nothing of the fact that US law and US treaties (Geneva Conventions were clear on all of this).
Based on this type of reasoning we don't dare fight anybody ever again, not because we might lose, but because we can't afford to win and assume the legal burden of all the prisoners we might take.

Voong, 41, also known as Linh Phat Voong, was from Johnson City, N.Y. He burst into the civic center wearing a bright green nylon jacket and dark-rimmed glasses. Voong's body was found on first the floor with a hunting knife jammed into the waistband of his pants."He shot those people? No. No," said a women who identified herself as Voong's sister, but would not give her name when reached by ABC News.com.
She said her brother went to take classes today at the civic association and that she had not heard from him since. She said she did not know that he was involved in the shooting.
"I'm going to pass out" she said and hung up the phone.
Officials said Voong backed his car up to the rear door of the building to block any escape before he went to the front of the building and started to execute people.

Kenneth, your concern is very appreciated, but my family aren't the ones I'm worried about. I'm concerned with the family and friends of those murdered or wounded. The amount of pain and suffering this has and will continue to cause is beyond the scope of my imagination. Binghamton isn't a very big town. In the 1950's it had a population of around 85,000, now its closer to 40,000. Technically its not big enough to even be an official city in NY State any more, but no government level has ever gone through the paper work to officially make it a village or a town again.

Definitely Vietnamese. I've known some Voongs.
Yes Zombie, the scum appears to be a Vietnamese immigrant. There's a lot of them in this area (I have no problems with that, this entire area is made up of immigrants, my grand parents included).
This is going to just crush the Vietnamese population. So many come here to work hard, raise families. I'm guessing they were most of the victims too. Plus associated people who happened to be in the wrong place and the wrong time.

re: #551 Killgore Trout
It occurs to me that this really goes against the popular theory that Obama want's to nationalize the economy. He's making it very uncomfortable for private businesses to accept government money. The banks are clamouring to get out of TARP and GM is now seriously looking at bankruptcy instead of bailouts with public funds. I don't see this as a bad thing. I'd be more worried if they were loving the deals Obama is offering and lining up for more. The more they complain the better this is.
Maybe we could make them wear funny hats too, just for a laugh.
From all of the actions and appearances of President Obama, the goal is apparently not to be as overt as to work to nationalize major elements of the economy despite calls for this from Democrat representatives like Maxine Waters and others. Such an action would be far too aggressive and likely to focus opposition against such action in a manner that would be difficult to control or combat.
However, as evidenced by his actions, and the in the Politico story on his meeting with Bank CEO's which led to a telling quote:
“Be careful how you make those statements, gentlemen. The public isn’t buying that.”“My administration,” the president added, “is the only thing between you and the pitchforks.”
The impression I gain from his actions since January 20 and comments like this is that he is not seeking the nationalization of major elements of the economy, but establishing a firm level of state control over the actions and operations of public companies - defining compensation, rules and regulations, who is hired / fired by using the acceptance of government funds as the initial effort for control. It is using a populist argument that since you take our funds, you also accept our control of your operation as paramount over those of the shareholders and management team. What are described as loans are apparently treated as an acquisition with an ownership share - and in many cases the rules are changed after the money has been accepted.
Given the government's less than stellar record in efficiently running anything, this is the worrisome expansion of government authority that should worry many people.

That wouldn't help. They'd just be replaced by people that would do the same thing. There needs to be fear from their replacements that the public will turn on them. That the public might take away their outrageous pay for causing this mess. No such fear exists.
Partially because the voters don't hold elected officials accountable. Perhaps if we did vote them all out, that fear would start to build. I agree they should fear us, but it's a bit like a parent with a spoiled child: "Don't do that Billy!" But Billy is never punished and doesn't stop. Until the threat of electoral removal from office is actually acted upon, why would they fear us?

Wait a second, Kenneth. I have read (I really wanted to find out) that there were NO scars -- and, in fact, no doctor ever examined him. Certain "nay-sayers" who were sceptical about Arar's claims said that all that was needed was for a doctor's examination, yet he never had an exam (very, very few were actually sceptical about his claims, here in Canada, since the whole push by the media was towards blaming certain authorities -- both Canadian and American -- and posing Arar as the "victim" -- the whole victim thing then came into full force). So, where are the doctor's reports? iirc, they are non-existent. hence, all the "charges" were based on hearsay.

California to require mandatory tire-pressure checks at automotive businesses
California has passed a new law requiring most auto servicing sites to check tire pressure at each visit and add air when necessary. The law will affect 40,000 businesses in the state, although the mandate does not effect body shops, car washes, glass repair shops, or parts stores. The state's government will let the service stations, smog-check stations, oil change places, and so on determine how much to charge for the check, and they must have a high-accuracy pressure gauge on hand. The tire pressure monitoring law will go into effect in July 1, 2010.
California's Air Resources Board says the state-wide law will save 75 million gallons of fuel per year, while also eliminating 700,000 metric tons of greenhouse gasses. That sounds mighty impressive, but if the Sacramento Bee is to believed, that's less than 0.5 percent of what California's greenhouse-gas reduction goals for 2020. Better is the CARB estimate that optimized tire pressure will save drivers about $12 per year (about six gallons of gas at today's prices), along with added safety and tire longevity benefits.
What nonsense.

Been very busy today so I don't know if this has been covered.
Have you seen these?:
Leonhardt and other liberal economic writers have been flailing away at Amity Shlaes’s history of the Great Depression, The Forgotten Man, for stating what historians have understood for decades: that Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal didn’t work. But now that Barack Obama has decided to try and spend his way out of our current economic difficulties, FDR’s policies must be exhumed and defended. Indeed, according to Leonhardt and others, Roosevelt’s main flaw was that he didn’t spend enough. I’ll leave the dissecting of these bad arguments to Shlaes, but I found it fascinating that in the course of Leonhardt’s latest piece on this issue, he saw it fit to prove the genius of stimulus spending by pointing to the example of the Third Reich.
That’s right. Leonhardt believes that Adolf Hitler’s building of the autobahn, facilities for the 1936 Olympics, and other public works projects such as monuments to the Nazi Party “helped Germany escape the Great Depression faster than other countries.” Unmentioned by Leonhardt was Hitler’s vast expansion of the German military (long before the United States expanded its own armed forces) as well as the wealth that accumulated to various official arms of the state from the theft of Jewish properties. Later in the same piece, Leonhardt also lauds America’s World War II mobilization as showing the genius of a stimulus, though he fails to mention that along with all the tanks, planes, and ships that were built, nearly 15 million Americans were also under arms during the war. That helped lower unemployment too.
This Is the Stupidest Thing You Will Read All Week
What author David Leonhardt leaves out is one little tiny uncomfortable fact: Hitler’s plans required wars of global conquest no later than 1942-43 (that he got a global war in 1939 was an accident; he thought the Allies wouldn’t fight). Because after eight or nine years of Obamanomics Nazinomics, Germany was going to be out of money. Totally out of money.
So I’m thinking that sometime around summer 2017, we really ought to invade Poland.
Mmmkay?
Threadworthy, IMHO.

BTW -
Just watched a George Soros interview on CNBC.
That guy now wants "the entire financial system rebuilt" so that there are "no more asset bubbles, ever".
(1) George Soros is in the business of manipulating markets so that he can create, reinforce and then pop bubbles.
(2) Soros has taken his act global with his political sponsor activity, which he has used to help exacerbate the economic swings that his trades depend on.
(3) Soros envisions eliminating asset bubbles by government both (a) guaranteeing asset values and (b) using regulatory power to prevent those guarantees from ever being called on.
So what is George Soros really proposing? Government price controls on assets that are traded or used to store value. Stocks. Bonds. Houses. Derivatives.
In other words, an end of capitalism as we know it. A "market" system where an elite set of "experts" determine what is of value and what isn't.
Oh - I forgot to mention - Soros doesn't want any regulation of hedge funds. Whatsoever.
My conclusion - Soros is near term bullish on America (6 months horizon) but will exploit the coming inflation crisis to deal a death blow to our financial and industrial sector as he sets off a wave of off shore currency redemptions.
i won't insult sex workers by comparing Soros to a whore.

Now do you see the problem? Soooo, we're to base claims of torture on the "fact" that "Well, you know, the Syrians, always torture!" Yeah, sure. That's not good enough in my books -- and sure as hell isn't good enough when you're talking about 10 million dollars. (You know what also makes me go livid? These g.d. "inquiries" -- I hope the United States of America NEVER, EVER goes this route -- these "inquiries" are utter travesties -- everybody is SHAFTED -- if Arar were REALLY tortured, then it is perverse that people (I include myself here) should then voice doubts about his torture. BUT, it is equally Perverse that if Arar was NOT tortured, and he gets 10 million dollars, and he then laughs himself all the way to the bank! And WHY is this allowed ?-- It is due to Canada's totally screwed up legal system -- it is a joke and a mockery (this also include the HRCs -- yet another farce). (argh...when I think about how justice is trampled up here, I really lose it.)

BTW -
Just watched a George Soros interview on CNBC.

You don't say, part 2 million: Obama disappoints as world leader.
the talk of the week -- at least in certain circles in Washington, New York and London -- has been that President Obama is failing in his role as leader of the free world.
That's because he is NOT a leader. Nothing he did or said was from a leadership standpoint. His much vaunted "oratory skills" were laced with weak language - everything from generalized phrases ("We can meet any challenge if we are together") to projection of American mediocrity.

California has passed a new law requiring most auto servicing sites to check tire pressure at each visit and add air when necessary.
*snip*
The state's government will let the service stations, smog-check stations, oil change places, and so on determine how much to charge for the check.
*snip*
What a crock of shit. Any reputable automotive service center will always check your tires pressure while servicing your vehicle and not charge extra for it. Do you have any info on what the fine will be for failing to make the check? Because this smell like an income generation law and nothing more.

So to save an estimated $12 a YEAR will entail creating a new governmental oversight bureaucracy that will cost the average driver probably that much in a month, if not more. Why is the only solution so many people propose for a problem is yet even more government.

Maher Arar. He has the scars to back his claims of torture. That and the fact that torture is what the Syrians do to everybody in their jails. Who was the idiot who figured the Syrians were our allies in the war on terror? Some idiot at the CIA or the US State Dept, is my guess. Total screw up.
And I seem to remember reading recently that one of the Gitmo detainees, under interrogation, pointed to a picture of Maher Arar, and gave the correct name, without being prompted, as a person he had met at a "training camp" in Pakistan.

Wow, yet another Rodgers and Hart musical not included on the Queen's iPod...
/though can you imagine the uproar if "The Lady Is a Tramp" had been one of the songs that Barack gave her?
Actually, "The Lady Is a Tramp" is an extremely clever and ironic song: Frank Sinatra forever destroyed it because he apparently didn't understand it. The whole point behind the song is that the lady isn't a tramp -- it is her social "superiors" who look down on her who are the tramps. The singer of the song admries her for doing all these things that aren't tramp-y, but which were considered declassé by the pretentious and hypocritical New York snob matrons of the era.
The key line is the final one when the singer says, "She's all alone when she lowers her lamp: that's why the lady is a tramp" -- implying that her critics aren't all alone when they "lower their lamps" (i.e. turn out the gaslights and get into bed), meaning our heroine uniquely is the only one of her social circle who isn't promiscuous.
Which is why I think it would completely appropriate for the Queen.

I'm a huge supporter of the police, but this quote from an article on the shooting has me aghast:
Police arrived in minutes, heard no gunfire and waited for about an hour before entering the building to make sure it was safe for officers.
Is it not the JOB of police officers to put themselves in harm's way to save lives?! People were DYING in there! Just because you don't hear gunfire doesn't mean that a). the perp isn't still killing people by some other means. b.) people aren't in need of immediate medical attention. If this is true it is truly pathetic. I thought the police changed their policy after waiting outside like a bunch of scared girls at Columbine while Dylan and Kleibold had the run of the place. Unbelievable.
