Ahmadinejad Declares Victory in Iran Election

Middle East • Views: 2,691

“Alleging irregularities” is a pretty safe play for the loser in any Iranian election: Ahmadinejad leads Iran vote, challenger defiant.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - State media declared President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad the winner of Iran’s election but challenger Mirhossein Mousavi alleged irregularities and claimed victory for himself.

The state election commission said early Saturday that Ahmadinejad, a hardline conservative, was ahead with 66 percent of the votes in Friday’s election after 21 million ballots were counted.

"People's strong, revolutionary and clear decision will bring about a bright future for the nation," Ahmadinejad said when he voted in a working-class part of Tehran.

OK, so he's the "conservative," and the incumbent, but re-electing him is revolutionary? I guess words don't mean anything anymore.

More troubling, the Obama Administration seems to ignore that as well, as based on Obama's statements regarding the elections there today.

He thinks that there's a robust debate. He thinks the elections there actually mean a choice for the Iranian people.

He ignores the fact that the mullahs vet the candidates - it's their choice, and the public chooses between the two guys that the mullahs want.

As leftists never tire of pointing out, Castro's protege Salvador Allende was also "freely elected." In lefty minds, that gave him the right to trample on the Chilean constitution, arm his communist militia and send them forth to terrorize opponents, shut down the free press, and otherwise make a mockery of the democratic process his apologists seem hell-bent on invoking.
A thousand years from now historians will cite the "brutal Chilean coup" as one of the most destructive myths of the twentieth century, along with the Vietnam war and the "horrors of McCarthyism."

Not sure about that - Iran has hills everywhere - but Iran does have a rural, undereducated, resentful underclass even among Farsi speakers. In case you were wondering who could possibly join the Basij, when everyone on TV in Iran seems to be a pro-American westerniser - that's where you should look.

Watch "Persepolis". Among the horrors the upper middle class, Westernised urban elites came to face: That guy who used to wash their windows, whom everyone used to sneer and abuse - that guy turned out to be a pious Shi'ite. Under the new system, window-washer gets to decide who gets a passport and who didn't. He gets his own back upon the city slickers.

A serious spanking for Obama.
Iran, the mullahs, have decided that they like the fact that they can tweak America's nose and pursue nukes with little to fear from the new American president.
Contrast that to Lebanon, where the voters blamed hezbollah for the losses suffered in the war with Israel and turned on them.

This is very bad news. Obama was counting on a new regime to validate his approach.

Obama won't rule out freeing Gitmo detainees in US

Despite fierce opposition in Congress, the White House insisted Friday it has not ruled out releasing Guantanamo Bay detainees in the United States. But with narrowing options, the administration has begun shipping newly cleared inmates abroad to regain momentum in its effort to close the Cuba-based prison camp.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said the administration has not abandoned the possibility of releasing detainees in the U.S., but he added that national security considerations would govern any moves.

"We're not going to make any decisions about transfer or release that threatens the security of the country," Gibbs said at the end of a week in which nine detainees were transferred under high security to foreign nations, and one to the United States to face trial.

What's more troubling - the possibility the mullahs will throw an election

or...

That the Iranians actually would vote in this fashion.

The regime is in control of the media, so dissidents are the only real source of alternative news out of Iran (note that the Iranians went after Roxana Saberi for pretty much attempting journalism outside the constraints placed on her - and convicted her of crimes against the state). The dissidents, like those in Iraq - have an interest in getting the rest of the world to believe that they're far more widespread than they might actually be.

Skepticism is the name of the game.

An interesting take from Foreign Affairs, in which an Iranian scholar theorizes that an Ahmadinejad loss might, counter-intuitively, be worse for the U.S. in the long run:

…the outcome of the presidential election in June will have some, although probably limited, ramifications for Iran’s foreign policy. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his two major reformist rivals, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, have all supported engaging in negotiations with Washington — a political taboo just a few years ago.

Ahmadinejad would be less likely to compromise than his more moderate competitors, but, thanks to the support he has among major anti-American constituencies inside and outside the Iranian government, he would be in a better position to institutionalize any shift in policy.

Although Iran’s president can change tactical aspects of the country’s foreign policy, he cannot single-handedly alter its essence. Only Khamenei, the ultimate decider, can do that. And he will do that only if a fundamental change in policy would not undermine his own authority and if it enjoys broad support from among the major centers of power.

Yeah that is what we've been hearing but I am not so sure. Yeah, they like our culture, songs. cloths, iphones, but that doesn't necessarily translate into political support. I'll believe they are Pro- American when I see it.

The educated youth tilt western. They are really fed up with the mad mullahs.

There is a number of factors mitigating against uprising.
The culture of inshallah, it goes beyond religion it's a cultural phenomena even among more western looking individuals. The "fearful, fatalistic apathy" in Churchill's words. It's hard to get large groups of people to take serious action against the status quo when embedded in the culture is this fatalistic belief.

The Mad Mullahs do really have a tight grip. They've taken a page from the Chinese and the real enforcers of the Pasadran are from the rural areas and more uneducated and willing to follow orders.

The young generation whats a reasonable chance of success, they don't want to start something and fail, and end up up against a wall or at the end of a rope. If they had the unwavering support of the west, Europe and the US they'd be more likely to try.

SMS messages rise to 110 million a day amid presidential campaigns

Davoud Zareian, director of the Public Relations department in Iran’s Telecommunication Company, has said the number of SMS text messages has increased to 110 million a day as news of the presidential campaigns have been heating up.

Can't have that.

SMS system down in Iran just hours before election

Per Ghalam News and multiple Twitterers in Tehran, the SMS (Short Message Service) system in Iran has been taken down, just hours before polls open for Friday’s presidential election.

The Ghalam News report, translated from Persian, says that the popular network “was cut off throughout the country.” The action occurred just before midnight local time, less than nine hours before the start of elections. “All walks of life from all over the country” are discovering that “messages on different cell phone networks will not send.”

The disruption in communication occurred after reformist candidates have been increasingly using Twitter and text messaging to rally support, per the Wall Street Journal. Approximatey 110 millions SMS messages have been sent per day leading up to the election, according to The Tehran Times.

One Twitter account recently reminded people not to wear reformist color green when it heads to the polls, as the government has threatened not to allow such people to vote. It asked to spread the word via SMS but at least for now that is not possible.

Yes. The government will be able to raise the taxes on and regulate the nicotine in cigarettes. Smokers are good for the gubmint. They pay confiscatory taxes for every pack they buy while at the same time, if they work, pay into a system in Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid that they might not even get because of a shorter life span.

Bermuda row over Guantanamo inmates

Foreign Secretary David Miliband has been urged to explain how four Chinese detainees from Guantanamo Bay came to be released to a UK territory without Britain's knowledge.

An urgent security assessment is now under way after Bermuda accepted the Uighurs without consulting the Foreign Office - which retains authority over foreign and security issues.

"We have underlined to the Bermuda government that it should have consulted the UK on whether this falls within their competence or is a security issue for which the Bermuda government does not have delegated responsibility," a Foreign Office spokesman said.

"We have made clear to the Bermuda government the need for a security assessment which we are now helping them to carry out," he added, saying that the four did not have papers so could not travel elsewhere at present.

The deal to take the four, who the US government ruled were not enemy combatants, was agreed by Bermuda Premier Ewart Brown as US president Barack Obama bids to meet a pledge to close the controversial camp.

Repost from this morning.

How Safeway Is Cutting Health-Care Costs
Market-based solutions can reduce the national health-care bill by 40%.

Effective health-care reform must meet two objectives: 1) It must secure coverage for all Americans, and 2) it must dramatically lower the cost of health care. Health-care spending has outpaced the rise in all other consumer spending by nearly a factor of three since 1980, increasing to 18% of GDP in 2009 from 9% of GDP. This disturbing trend will not change regardless of who pays these costs -- government or the private sector -- unless we can find a way to improve the health of our citizens. Failure to do so will make American companies less competitive in the global marketplace, increase taxes, and undermine our economy.

“We are excited to see what appears to be a robust debate taking place in Iran and obviously, after the speech that I made in Cairo, we tried to send a clear message that we think there’s a possibility of change and, ultimately, the election is for the Iranians to decide but just as what has been true in Lebanon, what can be true in Iran as well, is that you’re seeing people looking at new possibilities [sic], and whoever ends up winning the election in Iran, the fact that there’s been a robust debate hopefully will help advance our ability to engage them in new ways.”

Obama's statement this morning on Iran's elections.

There hasn't been any damn debate, the Mad Mullahs made up their minds a while ago. This election like those in other Thugocracies is so IDIOTS like you will say "oh the people choose."

White House: US may confront ships near NKorea

The Obama administration said Friday it is prepared to confront ships believed to be carrying contraband materials to North Korea but will not try to forcibly board them, in accordance with new U.N. sanctions.

White House officials said they expect North Korea to act "irresponsibly" to the sanctions, imposed Friday by the U.N. Security Council in response to the communist nation's recent nuclear tests. The sanctions include expanding an arms embargo and authorizing searches of ships thought to be carrying banned items to North Korea, such as materials that could be used in nuclear weapons development.

But the Obama administration has decided it will not react to whatever new action Pyongyang takes, such as another nuclear test, officials said. North Korea has said it would view new sanctions as a declaration of war. One reason the White House is signaling now it won't seek any new action is that it received approval for a tough sanctions regime from the Security Council — though lacking the ability to use force to interdict and inspect ships — and is not likely to get anything tougher anytime soon.

"We're not going to jump to their drummer," Susan Rice, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, told reporters at the White House. "We're going to implement this sanctions regime to the fullest possible extent."

Well, isn't that special, can we board and inspect your ship, pretty please?

Philipp Morris supports the cigarette bill.
Because smoking is unhealthy it will protect their market share.
Never believe a bill's purpose is what Congress says it is.

Good evening (again), Lizards.

Myself, I'll believe that they're serious about getting people off tobacco when they abolish Federal price supports for tobacco farming. Like a lot of farm products, price supports help tobacco growers stay afloat. I can understand such supports for food crops, but for a product that they have been telling us we shouldn't consume for forty years?

I've also noticed that the people most likely to be strongly in favor of an outright ban on tobacco are also the ones most likely to favor legalization of "recreational" drugs, like marijuana. While claiming with a straight face that;

1. Such a ban will not create a "black market" in tobacco products;

2. That such a ban is "enforceable" (while simultaneously claiming that any such attempt viz. "pot" is futile); and

3. That you cannot compare marijuana and tobacco, as "pot" is harmless while tobacco is deadly. (Marijuana, BTW, contains about as much "tar" content as Virginia tobacco, in most strains.)

I used to think this was rank hypocrisy, but I have now come to the conclusion that the legislators, "activists", etc., who hold such opinions are simply incapable of reasoned, logical thought. which probably explains why they became politicians and "social reformers" to begin with. As actual intelligence seems to be unnecessary for either vocation.

Regarding the "bulldozing" cities report. The bulldozing wording is just a generalization of the idea being promoted by a Daniel Kildee, Genesee County Treasurer & Teresa Gillotti, Genesee Institute Research Fellow, Flint/Michigan. The general idea is as follows and I'll let you guys figure out the details but to me it seems as though it grants eminent domain and ownership to the municipality:

Land Banks as Revitalization Tools:
The example of Genesee County and the city of Flint, Michigan

Compounding the abandonment problem was the state’s tax foreclosure system. Under Michigan's former system of tax foreclosure, abandoned properties were either transferred to private speculators through tax lien sales or became state-owned property through foreclosure. The former system even encouraged low-end reuse of tax reverted land due to of the length of time between abandonment and reuse – often more than five years. A series of changes to Michigan law have provided an opportunity for Michigan’s counties. The amount of time it takes to foreclose on a property has been cut in half, and clear title can be passed to the county or the state.

Formed in 2002, the Genesee County Land Bank is a leading example of the role land banks can play in preventing tax foreclosure and finding the opportunities in reusing tax reverted property. The Land Bank provides a series of programs to the community including a Brownfield Redevelopment Plan for the entire inventory of tax-foreclosed property under the control of the Land Bank. This has allowed for financing of demolition, redevelopment projects and cleanup efforts.

You can read more about the Genesee Institute here. It includes an article called "The Man Who Owns Flint" and the following is an excerpt:

If even that modest revival [in Flint, MI] is going to take place, government has to play a role, and Kildee has stretched the bounds of his job title to make sure he’s the one to do it. Using state laws that he helped to write, Kildee has amassed a vast property portfolio throughout Genesee County. Most of it is in Flint, and the bulk of it is vacant lots and boarded-up homes. By virtue of his desire to put as much of this land as possible to productive use, Kildee has become, for all intents and purposes, Flint’s chief city planner as well as its most powerful landlord and premier developer. Along the way, he’s invented new revenue streams to help pay for demolition work, property maintenance and a 13-person staff to run the whole enterprise. “I didn’t run for county treasurer because the idea of wearing green eye shades just thrilled me,” Kildee admits. “I ran because I knew there were ways to do things beyond the current definition.”

I know, perhaps it's a stretch and these proposals are merely being presented to the White House for nation wide promotion but it does seem like government extending its grasp and getting into the real estate development business (or increasing it's role beyond "urban renewal" type development). Sort of like diversifying from "Government Motors" to "Government Real Estate Investment, LLC."

390 lawhawk  Fri, Jun 12, 2009 7:03:19pm

WTF. Seriously. WTF.

Hoping for an Ahmadinejad win? Really? Why?

Problem though is that the alternative is no better than Ahmadinejad. And it ignores the reality that the mullahs are the ones who approve these guys to run in the first place. They're not going to allow someone who might upset their apple cart to run for office.

And there's another problem with the thesis that a power change would result in thawing diplomatic relations don't remember their history.

Rafsanjani was seen as a reformer - he pushed for nukes.
He was replaced with Khatami. Who pushed for nukes.
He was replaced by a reformer - Ahmadinejad. Who pushes for nukes when he's not calling for genocide.

Yeah, those reformers are real winners.

The reforms they're pushing are of the economic variety, and not the kind that results in Iran giving up their intentions globally or regionally. Iran's mullahs have been pursuing nukes for years. A change from Ahmadinejad isn't going to alter their goal.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the 1979-1981 U.S. Embassy Takeover

Five former American hostages confirmed that Ahmadinejad as one of their captors. William J. Daugherty, a former intelligence officer, said he saw Ahmadinejad 8 to 10 times at the start of his captivity: "I recognized him right off. … I remember so much his hatred of Americans. It just emanated from every pore of his body."

BBC correspondent John Simpson recalled seeing Ahmadinejad on the embassy grounds. Abholhassan Bani-Sadr, a former president of Iran long living in exile, asserted that Ahmadinejad "wasn't among the decision-makers but he was among those inside the Embassy."

I would think that you could refer to him as POTUS, or "Obama", without anyone's hackles being raised. AIR, Lizards habitually referred to the recent ex-President simply as "Bush" or "GWB" much of the time.

The present President is fortunate, in that while his last name sounds a bit unusual compared to some of his predecessors (Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, etc.), it is significantly less silly-sounding than my actual family name.

Not insanity, IMHO, but definitely tacky. My upbringing was, "The office of the president deserves respect, even if don't like the person who holds it." I've always tried to live by that. Bush was Bush. Obama is Obama. No nics, for me.

There is a difference between the office and the person.

Tell me how FCBBHO refers to him as "Hussein"?

You yourself told me it means "Fucking Commie Bastard Barack Hussein Obama".

But it's not the use his full name that one objects to in this case, it's the first three Mature and Mannerly qualifiers.

Your Mandate, Mandy.

465 ladycatnip  Fri, Jun 12, 2009 7:30:09pm

Blame the name thing on the media. They were the ones who first referred to him as an enlightened being, or the Lightworker.

Dismiss it all you like, but I've heard from far too many enormously smart, wise, spiritually attuned people who've been intuitively blown away by Obama's presence - not speeches, not policies, but sheer presence

My favorite name (which I shall continue to use) is The One. I think he likes that best. Of course after being referred to as God by the media (there they go again), he may prefer that now.

I have many wonderful beautiful friends in Iran. Im crushed for them. They keep telling me that the votes are still being counted. All the while telling me they have lost. Very bad day for them. Very bad day for us all.

Your friends are pathetic and I pity them. It's a bait and switch, horse and pony show over there. The shariah-loving, America-hating mullahs are the ones who choose the candidates, call the shots and hold the real power. Regardless of which candidate wins, nothing substantial can change without approval of the islamic leadership.

Never saw the ban on using the Presidents middle name.
I don't use it myself, but I find it hard to believe that Charles banned using our President's name.

Ask NY Nana about that. She was fond of referring to Obama's presidency as "the Hussein dictatorship".

It's the use of his middle name alone that Charles objected to. I don't have the patience to search out the link for you. Believe as you like.

It has about as much force and maturity of mind as some Indymedia type calling Bush "Walker, Texas Ranger".

re: #458 jcm

DTV transition brings flood of confused callers

If you've been watching TV for the last year or more, you'd know about it. People suddenly for the first time in months decided to turn on their TV today and saying WTF?

I'm in that boat, but at least I know why.

I have an indoor antenna that was sold as "HD capable", and a converter box. But I live in a "fringe" reception area, where reception of analog signals is at best spotty. So with the "cliff effect" of digital signals, I'm not surprised that I'm getting a "No Signal" placard when the converter is turned on.

That said, for the last week I've seen a good bit of fairly stupid behavior by the local TV stations. One cut off its analog signal on Tuesday, and now has a recording on its phone telling people to call the government hotline. Another kept its analog sound up today, but with no picture except the "you need to call this number" placard. I give both a ten for pragmatism, but a zero for courtesy.

On the lack of courtesy side, both stations were "flooding the zone" with ads for Time Warner cable all week. Plus I (being on their local list as a non-subscriber) have been receiving mail "offers" to sign up immediately. And promptly throwing them in the trash.

Their "offer"? $9.95/mo. for 1 year, if you sign up for three years, the last two at their "normal" price of $59.95/mo. On my pension, I long ago concluded that I could pay utilities monthly, and property tax twice a year, or pay for cable or satellite TV every month- I cannot do both. So my response has been to ignore them.

But the local stations shouldn't figure on dismantling their analog transmitters just yet. I'm anticipating at least a few court cases citing the "digital takeover" as denying people of low income access to news and information, thus violating one of the provisions of the old Federal Communications Act which created the FCC in 1935. The corporate position won't be made any better by the number of TV network owners who also have interests in cellular phone service providers; it could be argued that at least some have forsaken their responsibilities under their FCC- issued broadcast licenses to make more money selling cellphone service contracts. (Not to mention cable or satellite TV services.)

In our litigious society of today, there are most assuredly trial lawyers who would define this situation as a target-rich environment.

Who knows, it might even end up as the most entertaining "show" around.

cheers

eon

morgh’e sahar, naale sar kon
daagh’e ma ra taaze tar kon
z’aah shararbar, een ghafas raa... Read More
barshekan o, zeer o zebar kon
bolbol’e par-baste, ze kaaj’e ghafas daraa
naghme’ye azadi no’e bashar saraa
va’z nafas arseye een khake tudeh ra,
por sharar kon
zolm, zalem
jor-e sayyad.
aasheeyan’am daade bar baad
ey khoda, ey falak, ey tabee-at
shaam’e taareek’e maara, sahar kon...

O morning bird, sadly sing and remind me
Of my pain afresh with a burning sigh
Break this cage and turn it upside down
Wing-tied nightingale, leave the corner of this cage
Compose the song of freedom for mankind
And with a breath, set fire to the battlefield
Of the mass of this earth.
The cruelty of tyrants and the injustice of huntsmen
Have broken my nest to the winds.
O God, O turning globe, O nature
Turn our dark night into dawn…

The song has a certain oppositional character, and it is Shajarian's most popular cover. If he declines to sing it at a given concert, they nearly riot until he does it as an encore. As in this instance.

That should tell you a little bit about Iranians that you may not have known.

Bless your friends there, Justdanny.

When I first wandered in here, I was put off by the Commie comments and tried to discuss my feelings, but all I got was affirmation that many truly believe that our POTUS is a Commie, so I gave up. To me it's a bit sad, there are indeed real Commies to worry about and labeling someone to the left of you a Commie is just as wrong as someone on the right being called a Fascist, it just weakens the power of the label.

And you were given a ton of links supporting that view. Every significant person in Obama's life has been an identifiable Marxist.

Today is also my birthday, and I am 54. The day has not gone well for me. For those who have read the Somali thread downstairs, I have two comments:
1. My #101 was made to point out how strict adherents to Islam avoid assimilating into American culture.
2. I realized that my post was too intolerant (one said xenophobic) and I have apologized.
As I said earlier, I accept the massive downdings I have received. I shall be more careful to frame my statements with respect to enlightening Lizards. I hope that the Lizard community will forgive me and allow me to go back to my usual jokes and puns, with the occaisional link thrown in for good measure.
I normally would not carry this over into a newer thread. It has troubled me greatly today.

I don't know anybody who claims the full name is a slur. But the use of Hussein alone, while claiming "it's not negative! It's his name!" is disingenuous, at best. If only because it has a history of use as a "dog whistle" by seriously crazy hatemongers, during the campaign, and I don't want to be associated with those folks.

Charles never "banned" the use of President Obama's full name. Just asked us to quit referring to him by his middle name only.

I’ve been meaning to say this, and here’s a good opportunity. I think it’s really offensive to refer to the President as “Hussein.” It’s the kind of crap that you’ll find at Atlas Shrieks, and I really don’t appreciate seeing it here. Please knock it off, or I’ll just start deleting comments that do it.

re: #546 Nevergiveup

I agree. It's quite a double standard that anyone who referred to his middle name during the election was branded as a racist but now that he's using it it's a-ok.

583 Summer Seale  Fri, Jun 12, 2009 8:05:53pm

I don't think anyone here really thought that things would change in Iran with the nuclear program if the other guy won anyway.

However, this is a moot point. The real issue is Obama and his decision to talk to the Iranians.

Actually, I'll be honest: I'm all for it. I'm for it for the same obvious reason that Obama is for it. I don't really think that he believes (nor do I believe) that this will make any progress. He obviously wants to give diplomacy a chance but, in reality, is trying to gear up momentum in the international community to back him for when this effort fails.

It's a valid point and I think a good one. Sometimes, a leader has to demonstrate that he tried all other venues before tougher measures can be taken. That is really what others in the international community are trying to say. And again, I agree: trying sometimes makes a better moral standing than not trying.

However, unlike Obama, I am not deluded by the promises of that community. Lest anyone forget, Bush also tried to do the same. He didn't originally want to go to the U.N., but he was talked into it because of the possible moral stance he could make when Iraq failed in compliance. Likewise, Israel also suffered from the same mistake by pulling out of Gaza. It wasn't a mistake to make that moral stance, but it was a mistake to believe that people would back you when you had the moral ground.

The fact is, while I believe inherently that it is essential for us to take the moral ground and make these gestures, I believe it is wrong to put our trust in others in the middle to back us when they fail.

I fear that when Obama discovers, much to his expectation, that Iran will not change its course during negotiations, that the U.S. will still not get the backing for tougher sanctions or, needless to say, military action when the time comes. It isn't to say that he is deluded, but I think he might have too high an opinion of his own rhetoric at times. Who knows? But my guess is that, once again, the U.S. and Israel, with only a few key allies, will once again stand alone.

Huh?

Persian: Old French persien, from Latin Persia, via Greek from Old Persian pārsa ‘Persia’ ( modern Persian pārs, Arabic fārs).

The Old Persian name they gave their country until 1935 is the origin of the Western word "Persian". The name of their language is Farsi (a direct cognate, "p" often becomes "f" in phonetic evolution).

I know the name "Iran" was adopted in 1935, but I don't know why. I do know that many Iranians take great and justifiable pride in their ancient heritage. Do they generally take offense at someone calling them Persians? No snark, I really want to know.

In some ways, this is good. With the Mad Persian Ahmadinejad spouting off, the world will know Iran is still working on a bomb and plans to use it. The world won't do anything, though; that hasn't changed.

But if the opponent had won, the world could at least delude itself that Iran can be changed by talks.

Exactly right. Which is why Israel and most opponents of Iran getting the bomb have been hoping Ahmadinejad would win this election.

It may not matter who wins the election in Iran as all the people running pledged to continue the nuclear program and I don't see Obama changing their minds.

608 Gearhead  Fri, Jun 12, 2009 8:14:46pm

I didn't really expect the challenger to win, and even then then chances of Iran making any substantial change in its behavior was slim to none, but I still can't help thinking "Well, shit!" when I see that ol' Armageddon-head has won.

May the Mullahs tire of him quickly.

If memory serves me, one of my classes alluded to the change to "Iran" was some sort of genuflect towards the Third Reich, somehow being a derivative of Aryan.

He didn't so they called him "Chimpie" instead. Imagine if someone from the right called Obama that...

Somebody from the right did, and carrying a monkey doll tagged "Barack" to McCain rallies became a small fad before it was pointed out and frowned on. Nobody familiar with the history of racism in the U.S. would claim that the derogatory terms "monkey," "ape," or "chimp" mean exactly the same for a white person and a black person.

Had just a super day today, as mentioned in another thread, we went to our school for Veteran's Appreciation Day,kidsd from grades 1-5 in the auditorium sang the National Anthem, recited the Pledge ,and they handed out awards to the retired and AD military. I stood next to a WW2 vet, pretty bent over and dinged up with age. When the color guard paraded the flag through, I watched this man shed years and stand tall once more. Got kinda dusty-eyed at that, but who cares.

Later we went to individual classrooms and spoke for a bit,a particular point was made to all the kids who had parents serving that ANYONE who serves or served in ANY capacity deserves to be honored for their service. I hope they took that to heart, it's SO true.

All in all, a great day.

The Yankees just beat the Mets when A-Rod popped to second with 2 men on with 2 outs and the Yanks down by 1. And the Met's second basemen dropped the ball and 2 runs scored and the Yanks won. Unbelievable.

You don't see that very often. A walk-off pop-up fly ball. Mind you, it helped that Jeter and Teixeira were running at full speed as soon as A-Rod hit the ball, otherwise I doubt if Teixeira would have reached home, and the game might still be in progress.

I have several close friends in Iran, some left, some right. The conservative daughter of a mullah. A liberal daughter of a thrice jailed liberal journalist, to highlight two of them. From the right and left, wealthy and poor they tell me they are Iranian and Persian does not describe who they are. Persian is a word used by non Iranians to describe those who live in Iran.

Radical anti western Iranians take offense at the use of the word to describe them. Smarter Iranians dont take offense to the term. They understand it as inaccurate, but seem to like it because in the west it has good connotations.

Wikipedia article on the naming dispute between "Persia" and "Iran" here.

I think it comes down to a classical European view as to what qualifies as a nation or a people, which for a long time was based on language groups. The people of Iran speak Farsi. The latinized term comes out as Persian for people that speak Farsi.

The Iranians are apparently sticklers for everyone using their chosen name, while in reality most places and countries don't have a single name across all languages. The abbreviation for US in Spanish is actually EU, which causes me no end of confusion as one example. I don't see a lot of Americans getting bent out of shape and demanding that the Spanish speaking work start referring to us in English words though.

Words and posturing mean everything to these backwards theocracies and Obama has yet to confront them, not even in the name of the millions that are suffering under the heels of the Mullahs. Time and time again we have seen that they perceive flowery overtures of "peace" to be a sign of weakness and "negotiations" an opportunity to forward their own ambitions.

His tack has been to put heat on Israel to make further sacrifices in the interest of "peace", while neither Iran or their Arab neighbors can even come to a consensus on Israel's right to exist and publicly call for their outright destruction.

Pardon me if I don't smell the sweet smell of "Hope and Change" in the air. All I can smell is the acrid stench of more hatred and more war.

From his comments during the campaign of meeting "without preconditions" to his recent Middle Eastern tour during which he seemed to have credited Islam for everything short of the Space Program, he has telegraphed his malleability and that even giving the appearance of "moderation", on their part, is unnecessary. Obama has brought an olive branch to a gunfight and the Islamofascits know it.

re: #675 captdiggs

To be charitable, one could say that Obama's strategy of projecting a "moderate and conciliatory" American face was to "strengthen the moderates" (as opposed to a strategy of directly threatening Khamenei/GuardianCouncil/Ahmadinejad).

If so... well the strategy sure did not work.

So the real next test is: in the face of such an obvious rejection by either the Iranian people (assuming the vote was basically accurate) or the Iranian power elite (assuming the vote was totally rigged)... what next?

Unless Iran starts to back down (as my Iranian-American friends* hope it will, in new recognition of the sizable internal opposition), the US and its allies had better toughen up for the bad months ahead.

*Unfortunately, these are the same hopeful moderate folks that barely escaped their homeland, having once before misjudged the West's resolve to remain loyal to educated/secular/modern society.

re: #682 Dave Brown

Essentially, the President totally misread the situation, as he was viewing the terrain through his "Hopey Changey" glasses, attempting to woo his Islamic audience with smooth rhetoric, his middle name and his Islamic "roots".

They may be crazy, but they're not stupid. I submit that is was a foolish strategy from its onset, based on a profound misunderstanding of the situation.

As I stated in #678:

Words and posturing mean everything to these backwards theocracies and Obama has yet to confront them, not even in the name of the millions that are suffering under the heels of the Mullahs. Time and time again we have seen that they perceive flowery overtures of "peace" to be a sign of weakness and "negotiations" an opportunity to forward their own ambitions.

His tack has been to put heat on Israel to make further sacrifices in the interest of "peace", while neither Iran or their Arab neighbors can even come to a consensus on Israel's right to exist and publicly call for their outright destruction.

Ahmadinejad was no more "elected by the people" than was Saddam. He's no more than a mouthpiece for the Mullahs who have decided that Ahmadinejad's belligerent rhetoric suits their ambitions.

As you stated:

"Meanwhile, the nuclear clock just keeps on ticking quietly in the background."
