Go Sarah! For the First time since the Presidential election, I can happily root for Sarah Palin. I hope she gives Rush a political beatdown, since he's a toxic asshole. Her cutting him back to size would be an act of social and political hygiene.

Nah, she's not really offended by Rush's statements which were made a while ago. She only made a statement now because she was asked to make one. Otherwise she wouldn't have said anything.

My severely mentally handicapped cousin passed away last year. Cary was 53 years old, lived with his parents (now elderly) who loved him so much, that for years they prayed that he would die before they did. I can't imagine being a parent praying for something like that.

The word used to upset my Aunt and Uncle to no end. It is out of respect for the caregivers that I will continue to fight against the use of the word.

16 political lunatic  Thu, Feb 4, 2010 8:03:35pm

I would be kind of happy if that word gets bleeped out on TV and radio. It's offensive to actual people, and it's the lamest ad-hominem attack in the book

Also... EPIC BATTLE! Winner gets to be the de facto head of the RNC. I'll bet it all on Limbaugh because he'll say something incredibly sexist about her and Palin won't have the guts to defend herself. then again, who knows? I've given up on guessing how nuts the wingnuts can get since the summer.

Hi everyone!

Sarah Palin here. You know, I'm so proud that Americans here are rooting for me and cheering me on. It reminds me of that time when our team was down and we were just cheerin' our hearts out, and then with my help of prayer, a snow blizzard came in and the game got cancelled so nobody lost!

I'm just that kinda person. I like to give both sides an equal chance and, you know, it's that kinda thing you learn from bein' a mom with lots of kids when you watch them squabblin' and stuff. Sometimes you just have to step in and say enough's enough!

You think it shows that I'm qualified to be President?

You betcha!

xoxoxoxox,

Sarah Palin.

Limbaugh used the "r" word repeatedly during his daily radio show yesterday. When the Palin camp was asked for comment by the Washington Post, they replied via e-mail that,“Governor Palin believes crude and demeaning name calling at the expense of others is disrespectful.”

As with so many other words, it is time to retire "retard." I have a younger brother who is mentally challenged but he is anything but retarded. He is 53 years old and has the mind of a 4 or 5 year old. But he is incredibly gifted as an artist, he is compassionate to every living creature and has been an awesome teacher for the family. Helen Keller was referred to as "deaf and dumb." We no longer refer to people who are mute as "dumb." An evolving society will always refine its speech.

And this young man lives away from home for 6 months, then home for 6 months, which sounds to me a good way to make an adjustment. This is an interesting snippet of an article regarding the word (from 3/2009)

While "retard" itself was never a medical term, it derives from the phrase "mental retardation," which by around 1900 was commonly used by scientists and doctors, said Peter Berns, executive director of The Arc of the United States, a nonprofit advocate for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Even though Berns said its pejorative connotation was established in the 1960s, the phrase "mental retardation" is still used in many state and federal laws, much to the dismay of those trying to stamp out its use.

"People with intellectual disabilities themselves really mounted a movement that they did not want to be referred to with the word 'retarded,'" he said.

As such, the American Association of Mental Retardation changed its name in 2007 to the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities after its members pleaded for the organization to do so. In another sign that the formal use of the term "mentally retarded" had lost currency, The Associated Press replaced it in its stylebook in 2008 with "mentally disabled.

A lot of comedians I like use the term. I don't think they're emotionally disabled, I think they're just using a colloquial insult that has been in use for decades. Maybe it's to the level of profanity, but I wouldn't say it's the equal of a slur, because we still refer to able-bodied people as disabled, as a turn of phrase, as slang. Like Windy said, we refer to people as "brain damaged", "blind", "lame", "deaf". I don't think I insulted all blind people by hollering at the ref during a Sonics game when he clearly missed a travelling call in the 4th quarter.

77 windsagio  Thu, Feb 4, 2010 8:21:54pm

on a sidenote, the romanticization of the disabled is a really strange thing. They're complex human beings, not cuddly hug-machines.

Also, 'dumb' is the perfect example of what WAS happening with the word 'retard'. Nobody in the business uses the term ever to refer to people with disabliities. It was quickly on its way to lose its meaning, but certain activist groups thought they had something they could use to 'raise awareness'.

Yes. A 1930 MN school census record asks the questions for each child enrolled: Name, age, Parents names, grade, address and 'if simple minded' (yes or no).

re: #63 wee fury

This is an interesting snippet of an article regarding the word (from 3/2009)

"Mentally retarded" is an inaccurate phrase for such an organization, because some of the people they represent had illnesses as teenagers or adults (like meningitis), or injuries that caused their condition. DD is just more accurate clinical language.

They have made some plans.
But I think about how difficult it must be on parents, who love their children regardless of handicapped state - to know that once they're gone, whatever place their child ends up being still won't provide the sense of love and stability they had at home. I can't imagine . . .

Honestly, it's not much different than the love a child provides for it's elders, who are mentally incapable. It's really scary to imagine them alone in the world. Elderly Uncle with Alzheimers, lived alone FAR longer than he should have.

Yes. A 1930 MN school census record asks the questions for each child enrolled: Name, age, Parents names, grade, address and 'if simple minded' (yes or no).

When my father was a child, he had a developmentally disabled classmate. The public school wouldn't enroll the kid, so his parents begged the nuns to let him start school.

My dad says that a bunch of boys made fun of this child. Once. Sister made them kneel in the corner and say the rosary for a very long time, and no one did that again.

Hey everyone, just passing thru. I'm planning to get up early tomorrow, go to work early, and leave as soon as the snow starts piling up. I already brought some work home, so if I get at least a half day in tomorrow I'lll be able to make it up this weekend and get a full 8 hour's pay.

Things are starting to get insane here because of snow panic. All I need for the weekend is some pork shoulder or chicken leg quarters to barbecue Sunday. I stopped by the grocery store after band practice - around 10:30 - thinking people would have stopped the crazy milk and toilet paper hoarding by now. I was wrong. The checkout lines were going at least halfway down the aisles. I just left and went home.

No barbecue Sunday (maybe) but I have all of the food I need for the weekend.

on a sidenote, the romanticization of the disabled is a really strange thing.

Boldfaced for emphasis. You have a turn of phrase which was becoming neutral colloquial language, and then it turned around.

I think that's why most people, especially on disability issues, come to speak out. Personal experience. I know I probably wouldn't even think very much about people with any kind of disability if I didn't have disabled family members. And the more voices on this issue, the better for everyone.

That's true. But when it's in a political arena, there can always be (and usually is) an agenda behind the statement.

There's a lot of things to call Rush out on besides this. Has she ever done it before?

I think it's partly because most people realize a blind person is more than just blindness, or a deaf person is more than just hearing impaired - they're not the same as their disability. Helen Keller was referred to as "deaf and dumb." We no longer refer to people who are mute as "dumb." An evolving society will always refine its speech.

"Retarded" is the product of the sisyphean project of cleansing the language of insults related to cognitive impairment.

We've gone through idiot and moron (originally technical terms, coined for the purpose of getting away from earlier, homely terms such as lackwit, simpleton, and fool). We've now exhausted "retarded", a term that attempts to suggest that the victim is merely behind schedule, and we will soon exhaust "developmentally delayed". This last phrase is a pernicious use of language because there are many young people who are in truth cognitively quite well equipped but who fall behind schedule in speech or motor development. These people are in truth developmentally delayed, but they are by no stretch of the imagination "developmentally delayed" aka retarded aka moron, idiot, simpleton, or fool.

The trouble lies in a human propensity to convert words for medical misfortunes into words of contempt and loathing. This won't go away because it's part of the basic hardwiring of primate brains, something we know because we see the same equation displayed in the communicative behavior of great apes and even monkeys, in experimental settings.

The best we can hope for is that our leaders and trend-setters will govern their mouths better than the common crowd.

I agree "retard" crosses a line, but "idiot" seems to get a pass. We are looking for excuses to be offended way too often, even though this time I think we collectively are calling it right.

For 6 months, I had trouble getting around after an injury, and my car got what I called my "cripple tag." Our language has gone from cripple, to handicapped, to disabled, to differently abled, then back to disabled. Every time, the chattering classes who were neurotically concerned about being offensive forced the change, up until "differently abled" seemed just too cutesy.

I am double plus uneasy being on the same side as the language police.

I also wonder about how she singled out Rahm's brother with the Death Panel rant.

Oh yeah, why am I even wondering about Palin's thought processes.

Rahm Emanuel is not a threat to Sarah Palin. They are already identified as political enemies, and she does not need his goodwill.

Rush is a powerful man in her world. Look at what happened when Steele opened up on him.

That's my speculation.

Now I want to come up with new ones:

Differently Altered
Uprightly Hampered
Impeded of Gait
Locomotion-Obstructed
Motor Function Filtered
Skeletonwounded

I don't even consider it "political hypocrisy" personally, I consider them to be illinformed about how important stem cells are till they've had a friend/family member hit by something that stem cells could help cure.

I feel the same way about people who have strong opinions on gays/lesbians without having a gay /lesbian deep friend/family member.

I think the "illinformed" goes both directions on the stem cell debate. I don't have a problem with the research, an in general am in favor of it. However touting it as a panacea of cures for disease is grossly dishonest. It is very important--even if no cure is ever found to be applicable directly with fetal stem cells, what we learn about the body and disease will, I'm convinced, prove invaluable. There's a lot of ignorance about most political issues.

"Differently abled" was coined by the DNC back in the 1980's. Not only was it cutesy, but the first time I ever saw it, I thought it referred to Superman or something.

Whatever else is true, Rush is a heel (wrestler playing the villain) both in front of the cameras and in real life.

Unrelated: The most memorable shoot I saw was Brett Hart vs. Jerry Lawler. After Lawler made a group of nasty cracks about Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, Hatt stormed out to the announcer's box and publicly called Lawler "lower than shit!". The resulting match was choreographed, but Hart's anger was real.

re: #165 SanFranciscoZionist

We live in sufficiently different worlds that I have never seen that specific use of the term "reclaiming". I just figured it out from all the words around it.

OTOH, my grandmother retired from teaching to a busy schedule of volunteer teaching with kids in a variety of tight spots - Head Start, 2nd grade kids staying after school for remedial reading, and Mennonites (for whom English was a 2nd language). She used the terms mongoloid, retarded, and sit like an Indian (cross legged) with no sense of irony at all and only occasionally was called out on it. If you're a civil person with a respectful tone, you can say just about anything. If you're nasty, any word can become vulger.

It was almost spooky how she could bend the minds of dozens of 4-8 year old kids to her will, just with a look, like Svengali with a beehive haircut and Peggy Hill glasses - which looked better on her than on Peggy Hill.

PIMF Dogfish Head Brewery.

Those guys kick ass. 120 minute IPA = stunning achievement that adavances all of humanity :D

Portland's counterpart to Dogfish Head is a small brewery called Hair of the Dog which specializes in complex, ultra-high ABV heavy ales and barley wines.

the 90 is quite excellent. It's one of the all tike great American heavy.imperial IPAs. it's more of a BEER beer than the 120. The 120 is more like port. it's so thick and intense it honestly stretches the definition of beer. it is goddamn tasty though.

If you are ever in a bottle shop that stocks Portland stuff, my favorite Portland breweries are Rogue, Deschutes, Hair of the Dog, and Bridgeport. And my favorite Californian brewery by FAR is North Coast.

it SURE IS. Any imperial IPA that's balanced is daaaangerous to me. Also, any Belgian tripel style. Man, I have never been taken by surprise by the alcohol in a beer like a Belgian Tripel. It's all light and sweet and floral! And then the room beings to oscillate...

Check this out - I just found out a few years ago "red Indian" is still current in India on the exceedingly rare occasion that natives of India, speaking educated, patrician British English, must refer to American Indians. When I was in Oklahoma (chock full of our Indians) I got to meet the retired parents of an Indian friend (from Goa, India). "Red Indian" was the mot juste.

Well, considering that our Native Americans went back to calling themselves Indians some years back, I think that's entirely appropriate.

"Native American" was always hinky anyway. The Indians did, after all, come from Asia, across the Bering Straits. And the notion that my family, whose last European forbears arrived six generations ago, are not natives, goes against the literal meaning of the word.

I will respond with some Clutch:

So tell me, when you took a practice scholastic aptitude test,
Did you know the answers or did you guess?
You rely on gimmicks to amuse your fans,
And act all over bad to jack up your sound scan.
What's the matter with you?
How come you rhyme monosyllabically?
Has atrophy stricken your entire vocabulary?
Your style's like a garbage can,
It's meant to be taken out on a weekly basis.
Ever since you first record you been in a state of suspended animation.
You look like snuffaluffagus and australopiphecus,
Me cray, you abacus.
But enough about you lets talk about me,
And how single-handedly I redefined the entire science of radiostronomy,
Making nobel prize winners question my notions of reality.
Oh, but I digress,
You play sorry, I play chess.
King's pawn to B3, checkmate,
Go get some percosets!

No, it didn't. But panics can be countered in time and actions taken to prevent their recurrence. The 24-hour news cycle is here to stay. We can bemoan its existence, but it will survive dislike because it bring in more viewers and that what really counts for news organizations. A flash back quote Bernie Goldberg used in Bias illustrates the point:

The TV Business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, while decent men die like dogs.

Just because the people playing D&D think they are playing a game doesn't mean that the evil spirits (who ARE very real) will regard it as a game. If you are doing rituals or saying spells that invite them into your life, then they will come-believe me! re: #355 Varek Raith

You can tell as early as the second paragraph that the writer of the article is a bare-faced liar.

On top of that, the second issue is that the materials themselves, in many cases, contain authentic magical rituals. I can tell you this from my own experience. I was a witch high priest (Alexandrian tradition) during the period 1973-84. During some of that period (1976-80) I was also involved in hardcore Satanism. We studied and practiced and trained more than 175 people in the Craft. Our "covendom" was in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; just a short drive away from the world headquarters of TSR, the company which makes Dungeons and Dragons in Lake Geneva, WI. In the late 1970's, a couple of the game writers actually came to my wife and I as prominent "sorcerers" in the community. They wanted to make certain the rituals were authentic. For the most part, they are.

One of Sarah Palin's weaknesses is that she thinks so much like a mommy. During the campaign, she got really upset when people said mean things about her or her kids. It made her easy bait for trolls, and it made her look amateur and unable to handle the pressure of the vice presidency.

One of Sarah Palin's strengths is that she thinks so much like a mommy. She still doesn't like people saying demeaning things. It makes her look very mature in comparison to professional trolls like Rush Limbaugh.

384 oldegeezr  Fri, Feb 5, 2010 1:45:16pm

Day late but still apropos…perhaps?

On his syndicated program today, 02.05.2010-1220-EDST, Rush purported to be stating his [very] last words on his earlier use of the word, “retarded”.

[Paraphrased] “…it was used as a blunt tool of satire to expose Emanuel and Reid.”

Is this kind of excuse typical, or should he stand in the corner or what..?

At approximately 1225-EDST, a lady named “Jo” from Boca Raton, drove Rush right over the top…! She referred to him as “Limb-bully” for his constant, negative, demeaning references to President Obama.

[Paraphrased] “… the national debt was 780 billion dollars under Bush. Now its 1.2 trillion dollars under Obama. No part of the present deficit is due to Bush, Jo…!”

OK Rush…should we call that a "muff" or since your a golfing duffer, a "Mulligan"..?

385 LotharBot  Fri, Feb 5, 2010 1:59:52pm

Rush is wrong, but not for the reason the above quote implies.

Remember, "debt" and "deficit" are two different things. Bush is responsible for some chunk of debt, but he didn't write the FY2010 budget with its massive deficit.

Bush is responsible for the part of the current deficit that is due to Iraq/Afghanistan war spending. So Bush *is* responsible for some part of the current deficit, which Rush fails to acknowledge. But Bush is not responsible for the fact that Obama's budget also includes other huge wastes of money; Rush is right to place the blame for those parts of the deficit squarely on Obama, he's just wrong to ignore Bush's contributions.

OK…

So let’s azzume, Paulson and Bush’s expenditures of 780 billion, doesn’t include…any waste?

One person’s “waste” might mean another’s reelection…!

Let’s do the arithmetic.
Bush: 780 billion + Obama: 240 billion = 1.2 trillion.

Should Ms. Lundberg send me back to the blackboard and have me; write my addition tables again…?

OH… and BTW: there was there no “waste” in the first 780 billion…but…but...hang on too yer hat baby and cover yer sorry bony azz… the next 240 billion is mostly all pork…?

Huh…gimme ah break LB…!

For me, I just don't like to engage in destruction even if I feel disgusted. We can be passionate about an issue, disagree and still remain respectful. Sarah Palin did just that, I don't need to question her motivations. It's good.

Insulting with labels is no better than smearing, bashing, or just bad mouthing... All designed to hit & hurt to various degrees. The motivations are always to destroy and to shine in return. I think I understand what you and Charles are saying. Anyway, the teabag label was bothering me a little until Charles explained it in this thread. If they called themselves teabaggers, they sort of looked for it. It is surprising but quite possible and I am still having a hard time with it. My weakness...

Maybe the BEST approach would be to just stick to the facts and not call people on either/any side of the aisle names.

I agree with you and although what you suggest sounds too nice to be true. It is not a bad thing to remember good old values once in awhile. Speaking for myself only. In the end, what matters is feeling okay when looking in the mirror. As I get older and softer on the edges, the list of those I disrespect gets shorter; it is just easier on my nerves. ;)
