Pulling a GOP, quit already.

My only response whenever I see a celeb going in for 'treatment' is "I could use a vacation."

Sex addiction meetings are a great place to meet chicks.

Why should he quit? Or take a leave of absence for that matter? I'm not sure what kind of treatment one receives in this situation, perhaps he just needs more passion in his marriage so he doesn't need to be tempted by the prospects of women on the internet, but that's hardly a reason to quit.

re: #1 Jeff In Ohio

Speaking of the GOP, Newt Gingrich doesn't look like the stupidest candidate on their side - for today - as Gary Johnson went on John Stossel (ex-ABC, now Fox idiotfucktard) and debated (yes DEBATED) an Obama look-a-like.

Really, I'm surprised nobody thought of this before. If he can get an Abe Lincoln impersonator to endorse him, he'll be in even better shape.

Looks like this will generate more publicity for the promoters of "sex addiction" a vague and dubious diagnosis if ever there was one.

I don't care about any of the sex stuff. I really don't. I don't for Republicans and I don't for Democrats.

I think Spitzer's takedown was righteous because he was consorting with prostitutes, which is both against the law and highly exploitative.

I think Foley's resignation was appropriate because it was Congressional pages he was going after.

Personally wouldn't care what he was doing, if he hadn't been lying about it from the start. Doing something stupid, getting caught, and fessing up are forgivable. Spending over a week playing the "victim," that I don't abide by.

The man's becoming a liability, something that Dems can't afford when they're hoping to regain the House while keeping the presidency and the Senate.

Yeah, the lying sucks. But a week is actually a short time to lie about shit, going from the past. Look how long Clinton took.

Don't get me wrong, if he resigns, or his district gets taken away, I won't shed a tear.

But the damage is done. In a weird way, I think it's making the right-wing overconfident. This has taken up all the oxygen in the news sphere; once this scandal recedes, the GOP is going to be right back where it was before.

I think that week was for getting his house in order. Talking to his staff, his lawyer and most of all his wife. That stuff takes time, and if your going to deal with a scandal effectively you need to have it done before you go in front of the cameras. There is nothing more damaging than leaks or new revelations coming from your family or staff after you've gotten up and apologized.

75 navi  Sat, Jun 11, 2011 1:52:25pm

@ranchtooth, from all the references from pre-marriage articles referring to him as "swingingly single" I don't think no one thought this of him before... Really, no one has had the wool pulled over their eyes. He lied about it, and admitted to it less than a week later, and before more people came out of the woodwork.

It's meaningless online conversations posted in his personal time, or did I miss the article about how he was using government email to do this, and harassing government employees/volunteers, or getting in bed with lobbyists? I'm sorry, he is no john edwards, mark foley, bill clinton, or elliot spitzer. And most of us can agree Bill Clinton was an effective leader, even if he was a sleazy womanizing ass.

But then, I guess I have poor judgement because my ex husband might have posted pics of me from before our divorce... yep. poor judgement. it's not him having the poor judgement for impersonating me and submitting to a contact form at my work place with a link. Nope it's me. (and unfortunately our ass of a prosecutor apparently hasn't filed harassment charges, despite my pages of email proof of asking him to leave me alone, evidence of a past ppo and a renewed one. you know, because women just really want the attention). Bite me.

I don't watch opposition media. I've only seen video of him debating effectively on the house floor. Which is where he really needs to debate effectively.

Our country is full of media addicts.

That hardly means the two shouldn't be held to the same standards. I agree that Tony won't get nearly as many invites to debate on Fox News anymore, but that doesn't mean there aren't other hot-headed Dem politicians with funny last names just waiting to be elected elsewhere. When it comes down to it, they are both politicians and he can just as effectively do his job as a politician regardless of this scandal.

re: #11 MarkAM

Looks like this will generate more publicity for the promoters of "sex addiction" a vague and dubious diagnosis if ever there was one.

Dunno, a person to whom I am related (with SEVERAL degrees of remove, no biological connection) also went to rehab for "sex addiction" and while I do have a sneaking suspicion that this was more about self control than addiction, the things this person did were much, much, much worse than anything Weiner did. They were more or less legal (except embezzling money from his wife to pay for them) but they were awful at the level where, if a politician did them, he would be out of a job faster than you could say "orgies in Mexico."

Unless something came out about the 17-year-old that I don't know, I think this is kind of a travesty, and really does exemplify the decline of our political culture (cf. Page on this referencing E.J. Dionne and Andrew Sullivan and Stephen Walt). The only rehab Weiner needs is for narcissism, which is probably suffered by 90% of politicians although his does seem to have been more extreme.

Does anybody even remember when he stood up for the 9/11 first responders on the floor of House? He did things that mattered and nobody else had the guts (or the balls) or the reckless self-regard to do them.

"Welcome to your 5th day of therapy Mr Weiner. You must admit, it's rather ironic that you are here for pictures of a member of the Weiner family that I am sure is not on any walls in your home. That aside, what we would like you to do is now, from this moment on, think of a tweet from you with an attachment, as a cinder block. A real building code approved, home foundation, cinder block. Now if we can get you to visualize that tweet as a cinder block we now have to think of ourselves and our careers as us in a swimming pool. A pool with a very deep end, Mr Weiner. As you send that Tweet with aforementioned attachment it is now a cinder block and you are in the deep end of the pool and you cannot touch bottom. Are we there yet? Can you see it? Can we go on from here? Can you feel your lungs filling with newspaper headlines? Good."

I don't know about that. These are the conditions under which Dems throw their own under the bus:

- engaging in actual bad behavior
- bringing about unwanted drama
- getting caught by the right wing propaganda machine

...while these are the conditions under which GOPers throw their own under the bus:

- not being "conservative" enough

So, it doesn't matter what degree of horrid behavior a GOPer engages in - as long as he continues to spout Limbaugh-approved lines, he's golden.

Oh, I'm not denying that compulsive sexual behaviors can cause problems for people. I do quarrel with the tendency to lump all of these behaviors - from watching porn to texting to picking up strangers in airport bathrooms - as "sex addiction." There's also a lot of reason to be skeptical about many of the people promoting this idea (some of them are the same folks who claim to be able to "cure" homosexuality) and the treatment model they advocate.

I just don't think we can defeat this sort of mindset...and there were heavy casualties in the latest Pakistan bombings...I'm thinking our presence over there is doing more bad than good

The terror campaign is the only way they have of nailing the locals down to their particular version of Islam. For all of their posturing about the US, the Af-Pak radicals spend most of their energy and time killing Muslims...particularly imams and qutbs...who won't knuckle under. And that's a lot of people, since the area they're trying to dominate has a lot of Shiites, Sufi, Ahmadi, and even the "proper" Sunni are practitioners of fast-and-loose folk Islam.

They're on TV not because they have specialized knowledge about a given story, but because they're talented at applying standard partisan talking points to a wide variety of issues. And now, Dick Morris will talk about the Federal Reserve. Joining us to explain what the drug war violence in Mexico means to you, here's Democratic strategist Bob Beckell. Their job is to tell the portion of the audience that already agrees with them what the audience already thinks it knows. Everyone is stupider for it.

165 freetoken  Sat, Jun 11, 2011 3:25:03pm

Speaking of needing treatment, here is a "local news" ("Birmingham News Living" section) story at one of leading news outlets in Alabama:

Birmingham conference opens a debate among believers in evolution, creation and intelligent design

The article writer uncritically just repeats whatever lines AiG or RTB or Behe feeds them. E.g., the paragraph:

Three trains of thought will be discussed and debated: young-earth creationism, which holds that the earth is less than 10,000 years old; old-earth creationism, which holds that the earth is billions of years old; and intelligent design, which takes a theistic view of evolution.

The boldfaced phrase is especially deceptive, as there is a real difference between ID and the theistic evolution of Francis Collins (BioLogos).

Anyway, the one thing missing from the conference is... actual scientists working in evolution! The listeners will not hear real science at this gathering.

The author of this piece, Greg Garrison, fail completely in the responsibility of the journalist to get to the heart of the story. However, he did inadvertently let it slip in through quoting someone else:

"Some Christians use the creation story as a test of authenticity for your faith, 'If you don't believe the earth is 6,000 years old, you just don't know Jesus,'" Taunton said. "I encounter a lot of Christians who would like to cover their ears and never hear an opposing view."

The whole gathering is one big exercise to "cover their ears."

Well my unsolicited and possibly nutty theory about Weiner is that it wasn't really about sex per se. Although that was the vehicle. It was about taking risks. It was doing something that was on the edge and dangerous. Something he could do in cyberspace in the comfort of his own home, but still experience the thrill of doing something illicit.

How many of us have done things that were illicit or illegal? Most of us I would wager. The adrenalin, the danger that you might get caught...its all part of it.

This is not to excuse his behavior at all. But as long as the photos and conversations were consensual, between adults, I do think more is being made of it than it warrants.

He should not resign. This leave should be used indeed to get his bearings back in order. Before this disaster happened I had a high regard for him. The way he stood for the 9-11 first responders is bound to be engraved in our minds forever. The passion he showed concerning the fate of these men and women who were left to fend for themselves was sincere. And there were other instances where he showed what a Representative should sound like, like a man representing people and not corporations.

It's a shame this had to happen. And the sad thing is that he wasn't lured in a trap. He dug this hole himself en fell in. I think this time off will make him think about what a mess he made. This will stick with him. But I am convinced he'll bounce back. His political career is not over. Men have done worse things and came back. Hell, Newt is still in the race for presidency, albeit with a snowball in hell of a chance...

I find him rather a sympathetic figure now. He has totally lost his game. His has suffered plenty for his behavior.

In many nations a mid-to-upper-level politician doing this wouldn't be a big deal. In autocratic states we wouldn't even be allowed to know about it, but since we are a relatively open society stuff like this gets out.

Anyway, I can right now pull off at least a 100 stories from the wires that are much more important to my life than the revelation that some married guy gets thrills by snapping images of his semi-erect penis and sending them to women.

Fiscal responsibility in Oregon....
Legislature taps medical marijuana cash cow and rejects bills to make it tougher to get a card

Faced with tough budget decisions, Oregon lawmakers are tapping the popular medical marijuana program for an estimated $7 million to fund other health programs and rejecting a bill that would have made it much tougher for people to get a medical marijuana card.

The landmark attitude adjustment has marijuana advocates crying foul at the idea of doubling the annual fee to $200.

But they hope this takes them a political step closer to bringing medical marijuana into the mainstream economy, where it is more readily available and can be taxed.

A Ways and Means subcommittee approved doubling the $100 annual fee for patients, and imposing a new $200 fee on growers.

If approved, the $7 million raised would help pay for clean water, emergency medical care, and school health centers.

It's peanuts when compared to what they could be making if the legalized the sale of weed and taxed it but I suppose this is a start.

Oregon laws are a mess. Although you can legally posses, smoke or grow marijuana here it can not be sold or bought legally. I think a 5% tax would be easily accepted by all parties involved. It would probably even lower the price of weed if it were fully legal.

After David Koch Leaves NIH Board, NIH Hands Down Long-Delayed Classification Of Top Koch Pollutant As A Carcinogen

Large manufacturers and chemical producers have lobbied ferociously to stop the National Institutes of Health from classifying formaldehyde as a carcinogen. A wide body of research has linked the chemical to cancer, but industrial polluters have stymied regulators from action.

Last year, the New Yorker’s Jane Mayer reported that billionaire David Koch, whose company Georgia Pacfic (a subsidiary of Koch Industries) is one of the country’s top producers of formaldehyde, was appointed to the NIH cancer board at a time when the NIH delayed action on the chemical. The news was met with protests from environmental groups. Faced with mounting pressure from Greenpeace and the scientific community, Koch left offered an early resignation from the board in October.

Yesterday, the NIH finally handed down a report officially classifying formaldehyde as a carcinogen:

The listing as a 'carcinogen' varies from Fed agency to agency, sometimes for good reasons. Formaldehyde has been regulated as one (Subpart Z) by OSHA for some time.

“Congressman Weiner has the love of his family, the confidence of his constituents, and the recognition that he needs help,” Ms. Pelosi said in a statement. “I urge Congressman Weiner to seek that help without the pressures of being a member of Congress.”

Hey, who gives a shit about representative democracy, right? She concedes that he has the confidence of his constituents, and tells him to resign anyway. I'm so sick of Democrats not knowing when to go on the offensive. What they should be saying when asked about Weiner is "Senator Vitter is a disgusting whoremonger with a diaper fetish, a veritable circus freak, yet his Republicans colleagues defend him tooth and nail because they are creepy fucks who worship power above integrity. What they're pissed off about is the spectacle. They can say it's the lying, but that's clearly self-serving bullshit. By political sex scandal standards Weiner probably fessed up in world record time, Clinton, Vitter, Ensign, and Craig all clung to their lies for much longer. Hell, to this day I don't think Clinton believes he did lie, with his contortionist definition of "sexual relations." That's the kind of never ending weaseling crap that makes me think he deserved to be convicted on impeachment, in comparison Weiner is a paragon of honesty and personal integrity.

I was just being snide and in an oblique manner referencing how unevenly that Article is applied.

Thanks, though.

Iraqi Spokesman Says Rohrabacher Is ‘Not Welcome In Iraq,’ Tells U.S. Embassy ‘To Ask The Congressman To Leave’

re: #223 blueraven

re: #267 The Ghost of a Flea

Rohrabacher is the same raging douchenozzle who said rainforests should be destroyed to stop global warming. He also puked up the following pearls of derpdom:

Dana Rohrabacher voiced support for the Taliban when they seized power in the 1990s, visiting Afghanistan when it came under their control, saying that the Taliban would provide "stability", and eliminate threats to the United States. He also claimed the Taliban "intend to establish a disciplined, moral society". He said he believed complete Taliban control over Afghanistan would be a "positive development", that they were "devout traditionalists, not terrorists or revolutionaries", and that "sensationalist" media coverage of the Taliban's introduction of Sharia law was "nonsense".

Bird's gotta eat.

Steve, one day a roadrunner was my buddy. He hung out at the house all day long. I'd look out my kitchen window and see him on top of the stepvan. Then he'd be on the back balcony rail. Then I was in the living room and kept hearing this ku ku kuuu sound. I'd get up, walk on the deck. nothing. Really this was like 4 times. Finally I looked up and he was on the chimney. calling for my ass!!!

Ya'll want to know how fucked up and behind the curve my life is?

Just started playing Angry Birds today.

HELP!

Ha!! So I wasn't the last one after all (I've been at it for a couple of weeks...)

At Weiner's foibles we were amused.
But with worse timing we could be confused.
If we'd seen the wee wee
when gulf oil spilled from BP
the term "junk shot" could not have been used.

Alrighty. I've changed oil on 2 cars and an impeller on an outboard. Time for a shower and some grub. BBL.

Is that related in some way to playing "Angry Birds"?

There was a politician from Queens
With a party going on in his jeans
When recipients blabbed
He entered rehab
To learn not to tweet franks and beans.

A number of years ago I watched a roadrunner drink from the evaporation pool at Furnace Creek in Death Valley. I wonder just how the roadrunner impacted the weather station evaporation rate report?

A liberal Dem from New York
Had some rather prodigious pork
It had such a heft
That he always turned left
Whenever he came to a fork.

359 makeitstop  Sat, Jun 11, 2011 6:02:42pm

Behold the sad story of Weiner
Whose history should have been cleaner
He went on TV
And was almost home free
Until caught trading tweets with a 'tweener.

360 What, me worry?  Sat, Jun 11, 2011 7:01:38pm

There was a Representative from Queens
Who decided to follow his dreams
He tweeted his weener
To a Las Vegas dealer
And now off to rehab it seems.

361 carefulnow  Sat, Jun 11, 2011 7:10:38pm

Let's face it - that Weiner's a schmuck
who has finally run out of luck.
That tweet of his schmekel
Made everyone heckle,
"Anthony, you're just a dumbfuck."

Republicans are asking for cloture,
on spending to help those in foreclosure
They whittle away,
a scandal a day,
but this pork is definitely kosher.

364 Mike DeGuzman  Sun, Jun 12, 2011 1:16:23pm

TMZ released 11 new pictures of the congressman, taken from what appears to be the House gym, a background which sets off more questions about the congressman's use of congressional facilities for less than official purposes. The pictures were taken by Weiner using the camera on his phone and a mirror.

I've seen the photos on TMZ and its bad. This may be the end of Rep Weiner.

They aren't fazed

But this pork is definitely kosher.

I just feel bad for his wife. Whateves to the political stuff. His personal life is beyond sad. His incredible, beautiful, smart wife is pregnant with their first child and he's was too selfish to think about the consequences of his juvenile actions ahead of time. What a child.

Whenever I read a news article about him, I think about his wife. And I feel immense sympathy for her.
