Here's some news from across the pond in Britain. The National Teacher's Union [NUT] (you can't make this stuff up!) and many other unions are set to strike.
They do such a good job, and then the government wants to go and cut their wages and benefits. Or, at any rate, slow the rate of increase. Everybody else is doing just peachy, so why shouldn't teachers and other public sector employees see similar raises, right? ///sarc
Here's a paragraph from the article, followd by some reader comments [clearly, these are not ignorant Republicans]: British News Report.
Up to 750,000 workers will walk out for 24 hours, closing thousands of schools and colleges in England and Wales and disrupting Government departments, courts, driving tests and job centres.
The unions had called for a "serious response" from ministers but one leader said the discussions were a "farce".
Why is it that when the unions spend years getting good working conditions for its members and which has a knock on effect into the private sector giveing better wages pensions and a better way of liveing the tory,s come along and try to destroy it takeing the working people back to the past and they never move forward allways takeing and never giveing and yet can blow billions on unjust wars aid to educate against terror and yet take away money from uk education?THE people that were smashing up shops had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE UNIONS THERE PROTEST WAS PEACEFUL FACT?THE private sector which i work in poor wages poor conditions and to top it told no payrise this year as ression on and yet we have doubled profits this year ?Take a good look at what this goverment has done not one thought out policey and the only cuts it has made has hit the poor the hardest ?If the goverment win this fight god help us at the bottom?I BACK THE UNION ON THIS

So, the prosecutor wouldn't declare the guy innocent because he "could have done it" but didn't have the evidence to support the charges. And then says he can't file charges against the woman because he can't prove she was lying. What a fucking douche. And another thing, I don't generally like when people commit suicide, but I fucking wish she would have pulled it off. Well, I'm awake. And the part where Gonzalez makes it a point to make sure cameras see his face when he goes to a store, not a bad one at all.

Yeah, that lasted years and was fought in 3 different states. She lost in IN so she took off with the kids to IL. She managed to stay hid for over a year so the judge in IL decided to go ahead and retry the whole episode. Another year later she lost and took off with the kids to MI, another year, another judge, and another trial, with the same outcome.
She accused him of rape in IL and MI. IL actually arrested him for it even though the cops on the scene told her they didn't believe her. Once she caught him at a gas station and called the cops saying he had beat her. Luckily there was a video camera on the side of the store that showed her beating her head into the ice machine.

She has documented mental issues, no surprise to anyone. She finally moved to NC a couple years ago.
One of my biggest beefs was with the judges. Once the state of IN said he had complete custody that should have been the end of the story. Instead they'd buy her accusations and try to help her get custody of the kids back.
She also had a habit of dating local cops and siccing them on my brother. In both IN and IL he got pulled over and told there was an accusation that he was dealing cocaine. The completely ripped his car apart twice on the side of the road.

In IN she walked into a bar my brother was in with some friends. She walks up to him, grabs a glass and smashes it on the bar and cuts him across his arm and chest in front of everyone. He reaches out and slugs her and she runs. Guess which one spent the night in jail and had to go through to trial for assault?

Don't knock it, it works. After getting busted a few times in college I found it was easier to just tell the truth rather than lie. I could tell women "If you date me I'm going to hurt your feelings eventually" and instead of it being a deal-breaker it worked like candy.

There is a reason for that.
A lot of women want a project- that is to 'fix' someone. That is often how it is described.
In fact, the response is biological. It has to do with parenting urges- that is to take care of and nurture another. Many, many young women will jump at the opportunity.

I see no reason to lie. And I love it when arguing with a friend or family member and they bring up the past. I just say "Ya. OK. So what does that have to do with anything"? That and I've realized that regardless if I get accused of doing something I didn't do, I just say, "Yea, it's my fault". Just saves energy.

Yes. For women like that, success is measured in how much change they can bring about, rather than how successful the relationship is.
Their entire self worth is determined by the 'project' as opposed to finding their own happiness or fulfillment.

Lying took too much work. Using a different first name, screening calls, making excuses for why I wouldn't be home, etc... and with the advent of cell phones it's almost impossible to get away with dating 3 or 4 different people without them eventually finding out. Everyone wants to believe they are iconoclasts- especially the nut jobs. You have to be really secure to say, 'For the most part, I'm pretty average'.

For an event like that, Yankee Stadium would sell out.
Everyone wants to believe they are iconoclasts- especially the nut jobs. You have to be really secure to say, 'For the most part, I'm pretty average'.
It's the real self effacing hero who says, 'What's the big deal. Anyone would have run into that burning building'.
They really, really mean it.
Sometimes, they're right. Consider how often there's a bolt-from-the-blue emergency and the first person on the spot rises to the occasion.
When there's no one else to do it instead, when the emergency is clear and present, and when somebody asks for help [help, help fire], it's not actually all that rare [statistics will vary by city and nation] that Jane or John Doe does whatever it takes.
While there are a number of out and out, across-the-board cowards and/or shirkers, an astonishing number of seemingly ordinary people have a heroic core. With luck, they'll never need it. In many other situations, they man up but it goes unrecognized. The cases that make headlines give us a false impression that heroism is very rare.

TORONTO - A Toronto police officer who threatened to shock a handcuffed suspect's genitals with a Taser acted in part because of a medical condition and will not receive jail time, an Ontario judge ruled Monday.
...
Video shot from the back seat of a police cruiser and entered as court evidence shows the officer holding a Taser to a man's crotch and threatening to shock him during an incident in west Toronto on May 24, 2010.The 38-year-old officer is a Type 1 diabetic who, in pleading guilty to one count of threatening bodily harm in February 2011, said he was suffering from low bloodsugar at the time of the incident partly because he didn't eat lunch that day.

Everyone thought David Ellis Bostic had disappeared 14 years ago, but the truth was he was pushing up daisies the whole time. After Ruth Huber Bostic died last year, police discovered her husband's remains under the garden she lovingly tended outside their ramshackle North Carolina home for years.
No one knows exactly what happened and with her death at 78, she may have taken the answer to her grave.
"It's a mystery. Things happen no one ever expects," said David Bostic's nephew Carl Willis, 59, who last spoke to his uncle in 1994.
Authorities say Ruth had been estranged from her family and appeared to have suffered from mental illness.

I got out of a ticket once because the cop was a patient of my dad's. He asked if I'd been drinking, and I divided by two and told him I'd had three drinks over two hours(I was 20 and not even supposed to be in the bars yet). He said "Alcohol's still entering your system. You should go home. I don't want to see your car on the road again tonight." And he followed me to the freeway entrance to make sure I really was headed out of town (we lived 15 miles east of Redding at the time).
I don't suspect they do that any more...don't aim to find out, either.

One morning I woke up in a hotel to a girl jumping out of bed yelling "Oh My God!" and taking off. It happened so fast I didn't see who she was or what the problem seemed to be. I pull back my covers and see that I'm still wearing my clothes so I knew we hadn't had sex so that wasn't the problem. I then realize my pants are soaking wet. I thought I had gotten trashed and wet the bed. I figure "no wonder she screamed". As I'm gingerly taking off my pants I notice there's no smell, it turned out to be water. Big relief. I found out later that day that I had gotten soaked trying to pull a sprinkler out of the ground. I was drunk and tripped over it and while trying to pull it out of the ground the system went off.

My friend, Todd failed the drunk test, but as I'd been sleeping for a few hours in the back seat when he passed the cop and got us pulled over (we were all fucked up), I had enough of my wits about me to walk the line and get my car keys back from the cops. Louisiana Supreme Court Allows Vehicle Searches on a Hunch
[Link: www.thenewspaper.com...]
The Louisiana Supreme Court on Friday gave a green light to police officers looking to search automobiles without a warrant. The court ruled on an interim appeal in the ongoing trial of Derrick R. Kirton, 30, and Crystal N. Strate, 27, who were charged on February 23 with distribution and possession of heroin, respectively. A judge in the Orleans Parish Criminal District Court had ruled that the police search of Kirton's vehicle was unlawful because it was not based on probable cause. The prosecution appealed.

[Link: www.thenewspaper.com...]
Hunches can be "probable cause". Hunches are the condensation of long experience and of observations that have been processed by the subconscious. If the officer in question turns out to have been correct, and if he/she doesn't have a long track record of wrong hunches mixed in with a few hits, then his/her hunches aren't fishing expeditions, they're probable cause.
What, after all, does "probable" mean? It means that in the event, more often than not, what is called "probable" pans out.

This whole "the Founding Fathers fought against slavery" thing is an interesting development. I guess it's an attempt to allow Republicans, especially in the South, to pretend that slavery was actually an aberration from the One True Path of Right Wing Serious People, rather than a built-in feature of that system that was only eliminated through progressivism (and also through the economic self-interest of some right-wing Northerners, no doubt).

I agree the flubs and gaffes are fun for the giggle factor but aren't serious. It's Bachmann's response that makes them a little more newsworthy. She's a bonehead that's for sure. I'm wondering why a) people still see her as a viable candidate and b) why the RNC (if they are doing so) is throwing away money for any support they may give to her. Then again we saw the same wasting of money in their support of Sharron Angle and Christine O'Donnell. When the Dems saw "their man" they focused those money and energy on that particular candidate -- in that case it was Obama. Sure, it's early in the 2012 season but time goes by quickly. Yet money wasted is hard to recoup. Right now I think the Republicans are wasting a lot of money, time and energy supporting fringe candidates like Bachmann.

If I flub a couple middle-school facts on the Founding Fathers it's not a big deal, because I don't pretend to build my political world around "Constitutional Conservatism". If clowns want to wrap themselves in the immutable virtue of the Revolution, they have an obligation to get the details right.
Not when she is pandering to the base (which is a requirement to win the primary). The base doesn't care about facts, they are more interested in repeated right wing "truths". Remember these people believe that all media outside Fox News is practically state run and pushing lies all the time.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. For those wondering how and why I give Gov. Cuomo the credit for getting the gay marriage bill passed through a Republican-controlled State Senate, it was because the Governor solicited the help of GOP fundraisers who were open to the cause of gay marriage and used their fundraising skills and promises to help those backing the cause to withstand potential criticism from opponents to gay marriage.
That's something that his predecessors didn't do. It's why those earlier efforts failed.
Yet, that was almost not enough as rules changes to make sure that the bill got passed in time for the 11pm news almost derailed the effort since it upset some backers of the bill.

This...
The Ramones' Animal Boy LP, released by both Sire and Beggars Banquet in 1986, included "Bonzo Goes to Bitburg". According to Robert Christgau, the album version was remixed. The title was altered to "My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down (Bonzo Goes to Bitburg)" to placate Johnny, a staunch conservative, fervent Reagan supporter, and devotee of Nazi paraphernalia. "Go Home Ann" has never been included on an official Ramones original or compilation album.

re: Iran's war games and missile tests.
It's time for their annual war games and this time they're saying that the war games are: "message of peace and friendship to countries of the region..."
Right. They're meant to intimidate and force other countries to either develop their own military systems or to send a message to Israel and the US/West that Iran's going ahead with their missile/military weapons development.
The news that Iran has missile silos isn't really a surprise either - they've been building their nuclear capabilities underground to avoid detection and to fortify their infrastructure against potential military strikes by Israel or the US. Hardening their facilities should be no surprise.
What is curious is that some of the footage showing missile launches doesn't actually show the missiles launching off from their launchers, but rather shows them already in flight. I think that was a conscious decision to avoid the embarrassing gaffes where missiles failed to fire (and the resulting fauxtography to cover up the problems).
Iran's also going ahead with plans to launch a monkey into space - which would be a logical step towards heavier payloads and longer range missiles.
All of this isn't particularly surprising, but it is far from reassuring to Israel, which continues to be threatened by Iran on a regular basis and which is within range of Iranian missiles (both from Iran's long range missiles, and the shorter range missiles within the clutches of Iran's proxy Hizbullah; and Hamas)

To a certain extent an accurate portrayal of their capabilities doesn't matter. For example Iran got caught Photoshopping it's missile launch to remove a misfire, but the majority of the rockets still launched. From a strategic perspective, Iran hitting Israel with 60 rockets as opposed to launching 60 and hitting with 40, is kinda immaterial. The threat is roughly the same size either way.

Did Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office distribute a fake anti-flotilla video? This is exactly what some American bloggers have been claiming, after probing a video that was uploaded to YouTube on Sunday.
The video, nearly three minutes long, featured a young man who called himself Marc and claimed to be a gay and human rights activist. The man recounted a story in which he asked the organizers of the upcoming Gaza flotilla to join their mission, and claimed that his request was allegedly denied on the grounds that participation of the gay and lesbian group with which he was affiliated would not serve the flotilla’s “interests.”

She was very well known on the MBTA during the mid- late 80s. She would set up in stations along the red and green lines and sing and play guitar, then sell CDs. Word was that she resisted efforts to sign her to a label until she had sufficient material for a hit record with maximum earnings upside, She wanted to take care of herself and her family, and apparently had no illusions about the transitory nature of fame and fortune.

Actually its just talking about an annonymous legal complaint against the US ship, which it turns out was created by the Israel Law Center, which is indeed funded in part by John Hagee.

I got what you meant. My point still stands. Gay people are more than capable of seeing beyond their noses, and having political beliefs which transcend their desire for equal rights. A gay person living in a tent amidst the rubble of their home is still a person living in a tent amidst the rubble of their home. If you let them build a new house they are still going to better off than if you didn't. The Gaza blockade is doing the GLBT community in Gaza no favors. It's strengthening Hamas, wreaking havoc on businesses and undermining civil society. All of these things are bad for the GLBT community there. Will gay people on the flotilla magically make the institutional homophobia in Gaza go away? No, and no one is saying that it will. But from the point of view of the Flotilla participants, Gaza is suffering and the flotilla will help them. You don't lecture a starving person about how they need to stand up for their rights. You feed them.
Claiming that Gay people should stay away from the flotilla because Hamas isn't gay friendly reduces gays to a one dimensional characterization of themselves. It's fucking offensive.

Support remained consistent before and after passage of the bill.White Catholics split 48 - 48 percent on same-sex marriage. Jews support it 67 - 30 percent, while white Protestants oppose the measure 54 - 40 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Voters who say they have no religion support the measure 78 - 17 percent.
Voters split 47 - 46 percent on whether a same-sex marriage bill will pressure religious groups to perform such marriages. There will be pressure, white Protestants say 52 - 39 percent. White Catholics split 50 - 48 percent and Jews say no pressure 55 - 38 percent.
Opposition from religious leaders to same-sex marriage does not affect their attitudes on the issue, 70 percent of New York State voters say. Because of this opposition, 17 percent of white Protestants, 21 percent of white Catholics and 17 percent of Jews are less likely to support same-sex marriage.

Steve Benen writes, “I hate to be a stickler for reality, but when the Declaration of Independence was signed, John Quincy Adams was a nine-year-old boy.”
Nine year old FOUNDING FATHER!
Well, according to "The Founding Father's Second Amendment" by Stephen P. Halbrook, an 8 year old JQ Adams was drilling with the militia in the run up to the battles at Lexington and Concord. His musket was longer than he was tall. Perhaps Founding Son would suit better?

BTW that title should be The Founders' Second Amendment. PIMF.

How is the blockade undermining civil society and/or strengthening Hamas?
Or, to put it another way, what would be the situation for Hamas, and for civil society in Gaza, without the blockade in place-- and with any amount of material allowed to be delivered to Gaza?
I'd love a really full answer to this question - or rather a civil debate I suppose. Too early for it at the moment though and I'm definitely not qualified to answer.

Yeah when everyone was talking about the one trollish hate mail which didn't seem worth the time. I think the specific was a little easy to grasp then the full ramifications for 'civil society' if the full blockade were to be lifted however. That particular question is at least worthy of a few PhD theses.

Well, there are some folks on this forum who think that Alouette is one of the last wild-eyed, bible-banging, fanatical, religious maniacs still allowed to post at LGF. Because of the sign-up date, you know.
I don't think you're all that fanatical, maniacal or wild eyed. you're coming at this from a very different place than I am, and I think that some of your ignorance is showing.
I'm also in a really bad mood today (see rabbit and cell phone cord) which makes me more snappish than usual. My apologies for going so far.

How is some of her ignorance showing, when what she was talking about was how intolerant Gaza is to gays?
The comment about going on a pride march was not, at all, a statement that that's what gays do, but rather the impossibility of doing so in Gaza.

Generally, complaining that the subject of the post isn't worth talking about is considered both stupid and in poor taste; if you want to discuss a subject other than the one Charles posts, you can attempt to do so without insulting his choice of topics.
Or you can create a page on it, and see if there's interest.

Fair enough. I guess I assumed the hate mail threads were basically open threads. I should probably just start doing pages again but it seems most of the conversation happens on the main posts and the pages have been cycling rapidly as of late.

You can consider a hate mail thread open (at least after a few comments) and any thread can be considered open to OT after 100 comments (or fewer if it's really slow). But to emphasize the point you seemed to miss, complaining that the topic posted "didn't seem worth the time," is always rude.

Interesting news item from the BBC re. ritual slaughter ban that is being proposed in the Netherlands. A real head-scratcher - hard to accuse animal rights people of being specifically anti-Muslim or anti-Jewish, but of course some people will jump on the bandwagon for reasons that have nothing to do with animal welfare.

Hamas controls the smuggling into Gaza. With the blockade in place only Hamas has the power to make economic decisions within Gaza. Want to build a house? You need Hamas. Want to start a factory? You need Hamas.
The economic sanctions on Gaza also make a normally functioning economy impossible. Unemployment is at 40%. No new businesses are being started. Right now if you want a job in Gaza, you need Hamas. Because no one else is in a position to hire. This makes Hamas stronger in relation to other power blocs within Gaza.
In absolute terms the blockade weakens Hamas, it prevents them from rebuilding and rearming. It just weakens the rest of Gazan society more. If we take the west bank as an example of what Gaza would look like without the blockade (this is somewhat problematic but better than nothing), unemployment would drop from 40% to 16% and the percent of people living below the poverty line would decrease from 70% of the population to 40% of the population.

Its almost as if when you elect terrorists thugs into political power, it turns out badly for those who voted for them. Who'd have thunk it?

This is too simplistic. Sinn Fein was a key part of the peace process in Northern Ireland. The parallels are not exact, but there is always going to be some kind of political representation.

The blockade against Hamas would not have been necessary had Hamas not: 1) begun a suicide bombing campaign requiring the construction of checkpoints and a security fence; (2) begun a rocket war against Israel because the security fence was so successful in thwarting the suicide bombers.
Now, the situation in Gaza isn't nearly as dire as you're making it out to be. Hamas does control much of the economic activity in Gaza - but that's because Hamas forcibly threw Fatah out of Gaza and sought to impose its socio-political will on the territory. Hamas sought to carry out what it saw as its mandate in Gaza per the 2005 elections (new elections are supposedly scheduled for later this year as part of a rapproachment between Hamas and Fatah). Israel, seeing how Hamas has carried out a terror war against Israel, was not going to allow Hamas the means with which to regroup and rearm using materials Israel was allowing and sending into Gaza.
Moreover, following Mubarak's ouster from Egypt, the new government indicated that it would open the border with Gaza and some additional materials are now getting through, but the Egyptian government has shut the door once again and the smuggling tunnels are quite the profit center for the terror group.

I think it depends on your definition of better... In terms of political and social repression, the west bank isn't all that much better. In terms of economic quality of life, yeah it's better.

Yes.
I'm not saying that the blockade is unjustified or unnecessary. I'm just saying that it is a double edged sword. It hurts Hamas, and it also hurts everyone else. It's an open question who got hurt more. In terms of my description of Gaza, I'm taking all of my figures from the CIA world factbook. You're welcome to dispute the figures if you think there are better ones.

re: #245 BishopX
Nonsense. In much of the West Bank Palestinians are actually governing themselves.
There are A, B, and C areas. There are areas of shared civil administration, Israel only zones, and Palestinian only zones. There are places that Israelis are not allowed to go because of prohibitions put in place per Oslo and follow up documents.
Where Palestinians claim that they are being repressed are areas that fall inside the boundaries of the greater Jerusalem area and certain places where Israeli communities are adjacent to Arab communities and Israel has built security fences to protect Israelis from terror attacks (which continue in the WB but at a significantly reduced level due to better policing by Fatah in the WB - a point that Hamas exploits by calling Fatah collaborators with Israel).

I'm not going to get into the intricacies of Sinn Fein's policies but they certainly stood for the complete removal of British control of Northern Ireland.
The Israel-UK parallel is not particularly relevant. The parallel to consider is Israel-Northern Ireland.
And again, I didn't say the parallels were exact. In any case, it would be interesting to think of what the sources of Hamas's political influence are, since if you want to reduce that influence, it makes sense to address those sources.
