I see our friends at the JBS are concerned about our children's schools, and tells us how to evaluate them:

How to Evaluate Your Child's School (Part 3)

[...]

Back in the old days when I was in primary school, my teacher was not interested in my feelings about arithmetic or cursive writing. She just wanted us to memorize the arithmetic facts and write the words neatly and correctly. Bloom goes on (p. 26):

By educational objectives, we mean explicit formulations of the ways in which students are expected to be changed by the educative process.... The philosophy of education of the school serves as one guide, since the objectives to be finally included should be related to the school’s view of the “good life for the individual in the good society.”

That’s how humanists view the purpose of life: to achieve the “good life in a good society.” The aim of the cognitive domain, Bloom writes, is to “develop a basic knowledge of the evolutionary development of man. ... A knowledge of the forces, past and present, which have made for the increasing interdependence of people all over the world.... Knowledge of a relatively complete formulation of the theory of evolution.” (p.71)

That is why the theory of evolution is the keystone of today’s education and why creationism must be kept out. Evolution is the one idea that can turn a young head away from creation to the idea that we all evolved from the primal ooze out of which organic matter was formed. The breath of life did not come from the living God who gave every individual a soul. We came from an ooze, where inorganic matter somehow decided to become organic and reproduce itself. That’s all it takes in a child’s mind to debunk the entire Bible and accept the idea that he is an animal, no different from all of those other animals in the zoo.

[...]

What the NEA is essentially calling for is the legal kidnapping of American children so that they can mold them into left-wing, Democrat-humanists. As Bloom said, the earlier you get them the better. If your state legislature extends the reach of the public school into your infant’s upbringing from birth to age eight, you can kiss your child’s Christian religion goodbye.

[...]

Beware those nasty union teachers, they just want to kidnap your children and turn them into Darwinists!!

If Romney happened to win there's no doubt in my mind that a lot of the old Bush staffers would be rehired. Of course the same was true with Obama who put in a lot old Clinton staffers. Having just gone through all of the post 9/11 response by the USA I sort of cringe at the idea of going back to that.

Considering their act managed to force ACORN into disbanding, I'd say he got a good return on his investment. Seems like every act after that was an effort to try to recapture the lightning in a bottle a second time.

Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio told a radio host today he’s met with Republicans – including every one of the GOP presidential candidates – and has come to the conclusion they’re as guilty as Democrats of “hiding” questions about Barack Obama’s eligibility to be president.

[...]

“This takes it to a different level, because we are a law enforcement agency,” said Arpaio, “it gives it a little different type of credibility.”

The sheriff also preempted charges of politics affecting his investigation, explaining he had told lead investigator Mike Zullo to debunk the “birther” claims about Obama’s documents.

“My instructions were this: ‘I want you to clear the president. I want to get to the bottom of this and get it off the table forever,’” Arpaio told Klein. “Didn’t happen that way.”

They have, as I said in the article, had bits and pieces of it, though never in a formal let's-sit-down-and-have-a-chat [links to video] kind of way. Both took it with some skepticism, even some disgust in my daughter's case. Quoted from C&L:

And while we`re on the subject of the co-sponsor of this year`s CPAC and race, how about this ad placed by the John Birch Society in the August 29th, 1960 edition of "The Birmingham News"? It`s titled, "What`s Wrong With Civil Rights?"

It says, quote, "The average American Negro`s security of person and assurance of honorable treatment by his fellow citizens in all of the utilitarian relationships of living have been exactly on par on par with those of his white neighbors."

So, what is all the complaining about? The complaining or the civil rights movement, as we`ve come to know it, according to the John Birch Society was actually a secret communist plot to create, and I quote, "a Negro Soviet Republic in the United States." The exact boundaries of which were undetermined but which would definitely include cities like Richmond, Virginia, and New Orleans and Memphis.

It was a group effort. Looks like MMFA contacted him.

Weissberg spoke with Media Matters Monday evening about his views and American Renaissance involvement, first noted at LittleGreenFootballs.com.

Asked why he would appear at an event sponsored by American Renaissance, Weissberg defended the group.

"It really is, it's not a white supremacist, as far as I'm concerned. There are probably people in the organization who are white supremacists, okay. There are probably people in the Democratic party and the Republican party who are also, okay," he said. "But I would not tar an organization by singling out a few members who have odd extreme political views and then labeling the organization as endorsing those views. The problem, if I may digress here a little bit, I am a member of several organizations, sort of conservative, ranging from AR, which is, to much more respectable things and the thing about AR is that they cannot control who shows up. You walk in the door, or you pay your whatever it is, $75 convention fee, and you are part of the crowd, that's it."

Yeah, great analogy. Creepy dumbass.

Yes, I just read that! Weissberg is trying deny that he's a white nationalist himself, I notice, even though he wrote a completely overt defense of white nationalism that was published at a white nationalist site, and even though he posed for pictures with James Edwards, whose radio show also frequently hosts David Duke.

The fun part also being that I tried to knock some sense into Oliver Willis who works for Media Matters last month to no avail. So now my lead wound up at Media Matters. I must have Tweeted that thing a zillion times.

Breivik's trial begins next Monday, April 16. His defense attorney, Geir Lippestad, has said that the Breivik wants to be found guilty of the twin attacks. "He wants to be found sane and accountable," said Lippestad.

Lippestad also said that Breivik will provide an explanation for his actions. "He will not only defend his actions," said Lippestad, "but will also lament, I think, not going further."

Right. I can't believe those people. Gingrich actually thinks he would have the power as president to manipulate the market and petro market to creat $2.50/gallon gasoline? What's worse is that people believe him. There will never be $2.50/gallon gasoline in the USA again. If we could stabilize it that would be sufficient. And no more packs of cigs for 25 cents either.

129 Gus  Tue, Apr 10, 2012 6:38:21pm

Romney: For high gas prices before he was against them

Romney went so far as to make high gas prices out to be a welcome reality for the foreseeable future, one that people needed to learn to live with.

When lieutenant governor Kerry Healey, a fellow Republican, called for suspending the state’s 23.5 cent gas tax during a price spike in May 2006, Romney rejected the idea, saying it would only further drive up gasoline consumption.

“I don’t think that now is the time, and I’m not sure there will be the right time, for us to encourage the use of more gasoline,” Romney said, according to the Quincy Patriot Ledger’s report at the time.

“I’m very much in favor of people recognizing that these high gasoline prices are probably here to stay.”

I added the hard return after each sentence. Not sure if that qualifies him as saying that it would be a "welcome reality." Still, he has a very somber and pragmatic view here. But that was the Mitt Romney 2006.1.2.3.455.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. All you need to do to crash the price is create a glut. To create a glut, reduce demand. To do that, just waste less. A concerted effort by people and the government to reduce usage a gallon per week per driver would probably be enough to do that. Time the stop lights, car pool once in a while, reduce mail delivery to 3 days per week, promote 4 day weeks for schools, convert some of the fleet to natural gas and electric cars and keep turning over the fleet to more fuel efficient cars. A lot of ways to do it, all contributing part of the solution.

Now I don't think any GOP candidate would be bright enough to just focus on wasting less. All they think it will take is drill baby drill but bumper sticker slogans won't get us there.

Funny, the draft-dodging surrender monkey Romney drew his line in the sand long ago when he denied Reagan-Bush, denied conservatism and ran as a gay rights pushing, Roe v Wade approving abortion advocate, big government mandate loving socialist. He’s now looking America square in the eye and lying his ass off. He’s a political whore who will say anything to get elected. Republicans are suckers.
---

Romney’s socialism is just as deadly as Obama’s. Maybe worse. At least the Republicans will try (or pretend to try) to fight off Obama’s. They’ll happily go along with Romney. Don’t look now but Romney has your children’s futures all planned out for them, just like Obama. They have nothing to fear. One way or the other, the government will take care of them. Cradle to grave.

Not too sure. I'm dreadfully curious.

More on the South China Sea Incident:

On Tuesday, Filipino sailors from the warship boarded the Chinese vessels for an inspection, discovering large amounts of illegally collected corals, giant clams and live sharks inside the first boat, the department said in a statement.

Two Chinese maritime surveillance ships, identified as Zhonggou Haijian 75 and Zhonggou Haijian 84, later approached and positioned themselves between the Philippine warship and the Chinese fishing vessels "thus preventing the arrests of the erring Chinese fishermen," the statement said.

China openly flouts International Law much worse than we do, and that doesn't touch on their abuse of the Tibetans and Uyghurs.

However, the Philippines found a helper in Vietnam.

Faced with China's formidable military, the Philippines and Vietnam have forged closer ties. Aside from military accords, the two countries agreed to set up a hotline between their coast guards and maritime police to monitor maritime incidents, such as piracy and incursions into their territorial waters.

Philippine navy chief Vice Adm. Alexander Pama said Tuesday that Philippine and Vietnamese sailors agreed to play football and basketball matches in the islands they occupy in the Spratlys in a novel way to build trust in the contested region.

China is forcing all of its neighbors to band together against it. When China begins to collapse, it will turn into an hour of wolves. I, for one, think the US should let these nations have their fun once China implodes. Give them 5-10 years before trying to stop whatever they want to do.

China isn't the Soviet Union. I wouldn't expect them to break up all that willingly. We're talking about a country that still thinks of Taiwan as if it belongs to them...

The meat and bones. Solar energy, wind, water, electric cars, tax incentives for new industry, etc. Positive reinforcement rather than negative reinforcement. With C/T I sometimes think that we'll wind up just accepting higher energy costs and not doing anything about it. Know what I mean?

Oh, it won't be willingly. I guarantee it. But it will happen. The PRC burned through the good will they had last decade, and have made all sorts of enemies.

When it comes, I want no US involvement to stop it.

We also have to face certain realities. Obama may win yet. It's looking like he will win. But. It's very unlikely that the Republicans will lose the House. The Senate lies in balance and can go in either direction. After November Congress will remain uncooperative with the White House save holding the Senate. There will have to be compromises made.

China is forcing all of its neighbors to band together against it. When China begins to collapse, it will turn into an hour of wolves. I, for one, think the US should let these nations have their fun once China implodes. Give them 5-10 years before trying to stop whatever they want to do.

Just remember that there are going to be a lot of innocent children and grandmothers in the path of 'whatever they want to do'.

I'm also slightly hopeful we might be able to eke out a small majority in the house.

However, we do have something else to run on. The way Republicans are running the states. In Michigan, they are flat out dictatorial, and in Indiana, they are trying to gerrymander themselves a one-party state.

Or, more simply, the Republicans no longer act in a small-d democratic manner.

Tennessee Creationism Bill Not Signed, Not Vetoed

[Governor Bill Haslam] says it’s a useless bill. That’s not accurate, as it provides cover for creationist teachers, and Haslam surely knows this.

“The bill received strong bipartisan support, passing the House and Senate by a three-to-one margin, but good legislation should bring clarity and not confusion. My concern is that this bill has not met this objective. For that reason, I will not sign the bill, but will allow it to become law without my signature,” Haslam added.

Brown's holding up pretty well so far, but from looks of that, it has more to do with his personality than what he's running on. Warren's got the big lead in money on hand, but she has to really do something with it if she wants to take back the seat.

It's pretty much human nature to use something until the costs are more than any benefits so the cost of using oil has to go up and the cost of alternative sources have to go down, so tax incentives is a necessity. The fundamental problem with that approach (tax energy to induce people to develop alternatives) is that it will hurt the economy and we need a robust, healthy economy to provide the capital to invest in the new infrastructure.

This is why the Euro model of simply imposing high energy taxes won't get us there. I think we need to focus on wasting less.

Yeah but that's next to impossible to attain at this point. I could see it maybe 10 years down the road. What I could see Republicans supporting is high speed rail; light rail; solar; wind projects; etc. On that I think we could easily move forward.

The only other possibility would be some kind of catastrophic climate event such as sustained droughts; wildfires; forest fires; etc. Increased "symptoms" as it were. Otherwise, in the TPGOP environment I don't see it happening.

It's not the only solution. If we look at it as the only solution then we're screwed because Republicans will simply not vote for it.

I agree with that statement but the scientific approach to problem solving is totally different than how politics work.

In science, you collect data, then make conclusions. In politics, you start with the conclusion, then seek out data that supports it.

Hopefully, science literate politicians, as long as they are in the majority, will be able to promote science research and base their policy decisions on understanding rather than misunderstanding.

No, North Carolina is a slightly less developed version of Virginia. Virginia is a few years ahead of North Carolina, but they are on the same path.

Indiana is more like Kentucky.

Well the good news about Florida is that Rick Scott is really unpopular. I wouldn't expect Indiana to go to Obama honestly even if Santorum was the nominee.

If cap and trade is implemented correctly, the cost to the economy will be minimal and companies building and using smart technologies will get an influx of cash allowing them to hire.

The problem for a company is that if they have old infrastructure that needs to be replaced, they will need financing to do make the major reinvestment and to get financing requires good prospects for long term cash flow. Most domestic companies that use a lot of energy in their operations survive on thin margins. We know the destination, but we need a plan to get there.

That's why the Feds have been offering so many rebates for energy saving upgrades. That money will dry up soon.

re: #248 Gus

Yeah but that's next to impossible to attain at this point. I could see it maybe 10 years down the road. What I could see Republicans supporting is high speed rail; light rail; solar; wind projects; etc. On that I think we could easily move forward.

The only other possibility would be some kind of catastrophic climate event such as sustained droughts; wildfires; forest fires; etc. Increased "symptoms" as it were. Otherwise, in the TPGOP environment I don't see it happening.

It's not the only solution. If we look at it as the only solution then we're screwed because Republicans will simply not vote for it.

What you are saying is the framing of alternative energy sources has to pull away from the environment and become a cornerstone of the economy. That's true, the message has to hit pocket books in a positive way for the right to embrace it.

My question is how you fund the tax incentives? Although a decent job of PR would bring investors for things like light rail, smart cars even smart grids you still have to counter the right wing image of solar/wind/thermal.

The most important philosopher in the history of the Catholic Church was St. Thomas Aquinas and Rick Santorum's anti-science, creationist agenda is diametrically opposed to what Aquinas taught. Newt Gingrich stiffs Utah

Five Republicans have filed the necessary papers and $500 fee to qualify for the June 26 Utah presidential primary election, but with Rick Santorum dropping out of the race Tuesday, only four will be on the ballot.

Or possibly three.

Newt Gingrich’s check bounced.

Utah Elections Director Mark Thomas said a designated agent for the Gingrich campaign brought the filing papers and a check for $500 in March, but the state was notified by the bank that the check had bounced. He said the office has tried to contact the Gingrich campaign through the telephone number and email provided on the application, but has not received a response.

Recently, the state sent a certified letter to the campaign, stating that if the fee isn’t paid by April 20, Gingrich will be disqualified and will not be on the ballot.

The first loquats were early this year, way early, like the second week in February.

Now though is the height of the season. While the strange climate disturbed the flowering season significantly, some trees are still bearing quite a bit of fruit. And on a couple of trees from which I have picked for a couple of seasons have fruit larger this year.

Few people around here actually eat the fruit, I've concluded. Some do, but I'd bet it's less than 5% of the population. I'm fine with that - it leaves all the more for me.

This year I've come across some large (probably selected) varieties. While one gets more flesh per fruit I'm finding the flavor is lacking. The small round ones that are more yellow than orange tend to have the sharper, stronger flavor.

"In one incident, a rival campaign manager was said to have heard Mr Perry singing I Was Working On The Railroad in the bathroom before one of the many debates.

The eBook, published by Politico reporters Mike Allen and Evan Thomas, says the unidentified manager went to check who was singing so loudly, only to find that it was one of the candidates themselves.

‘Nonplussed, the campaign manager made a hasty exit; as the bathroom door closed, he could hear Perry still merrily singing away: “I-I-I’ve been working on the ra-a-i-i-l-road, all-l-l the live-long day,’ the book states. "

I found something on Wikipedia about the Titanic. Meet David Blair:

David Blair (or Davy)(1875 - 19??) was a British merchant seaman with the White Star Line, who had reassigned him from the RMS Titanic just before its maiden voyage. Due to his hasty departure, he accidentally kept a key to a storage locker believed to contain binoculars intended for use by the crow's nest lookout.

When Blair left the Titanic on 9 April 1912 he took with him the key to the Crow's nest locker, presumably by accident. This is believed to be a reason why there were no binoculars available with the crew during the voyage. According to other versions, the binoculars were not in the locker, but were left behind in his cabin, or he took them along with him when he left the ship, as they were his personal set of binoculars. The absence of binoculars being a factor in the sinking of the Titanic, became a point of investigation in the subsequent inquiries into the sinking.

The lookouts at the time of the collision Frederick Fleet and Reginald Lee maintained during the inquiries that they were informed they were to have no binoculars during the voyage. Fleet, when asked by a commission of inquiry composed of members of the United States Congress whether or not they would have seen the iceberg from farther away, replied that he would have seen it "a bit sooner". When asked "How much sooner?", he responded: "Well, enough to get out of the way." According to legal expert Gary Slapper, though, Blair's "forgetfulness wasn’t a material reason for the disaster" as there were other intervening causes.

I have a very old great Aunt who is over 100 now. Her married name is Mary Dorr, she was a very young girl about 6 who came to America on the Carpathia on the voyage when the Carpathia picked up some of the Titanic survivors out of rowboats. About 8 or 10 years back at a family reunion she told the horrible story of how she watched as some of the survivors were thrown back in the water because they were men who shouldn't have been in the rowboats in the first place..

re: #346 Mich-again

The Carpathia's Captain was truly awesome that night. When he heard what was going on... I'll let Wikipedia detail the events.

The Carpathia was on its regular route between New York City and Fiume when early on 15 April 1912 she received a distress signal from the White Star Line ocean liner RMS Titanic, which had struck an iceberg and was sinking. Rostron was asleep when Carpathia's' wireless operator, Harold Cottam, contacted Titanic at 12:15am to relay regular private party wireless traffic from Cape Race. The sinking Titanic, which had struck an iceberg approximately an hour before, replied with a distress message and call for help. Cottam ran to Rostron's cabin to alert him.

Rostron immediately ordered the ship to race towards the Titanic's reported position, posting extra lookouts to help spot and maneuver around the ice he knew to be in the area. About 58 nautical miles (93 km) separated the Carpathia from Titanic's position, but the Carpathia was not the closest ship to the Titanic, it was the Californian, Captain Lord saw the distress signals but thought there was a party going on at the Titanic and also their radio was turned off, so they did not receive the distress signals. Rostron and his engineering crew skillfully obtained the maximum speed possible from the Carpathia, coaxing her up to 17.5 knots - three and a half more than she was rated for. Even so, Carpathia, travelling through dangerous ice floes, took about 3½ hours to reach the Titanic's radioed position. During this time Rostron turned off heating to ensure the maximum amount of steam for the ship's engines and had the ship prepared for the survivors; including getting blankets, food and drinks ready, and ordering his medical crew to stand by to receive the possibly injured survivors. Altogether, 23 orders from Rostron to his crew were successfully implemented before Carpathia had even arrived at the scene of the disaster.

He went 25% over the Top Speed of the Carpathia to get there. He probably damaged the engines of that small liner to haul ass there. Definitely the best person involved in the disaster.

Not so sure about that. 2nd Officer Lightoller was the very personification of keeping one's head under pressure, and the sinking of the Titanic wasn't his last time doing that either: He later commanded on of the evacuation transports at Dunkirk.

Lightoller was more awesome overall though. He lived a very interesting life.

He started out as crew on small sailing vessels, put out a fire on one of them, and survived a Tropical Cyclone, a Shipwreck, and Malaria he caught from West Africa. After failing at gold searching in the Klondike, he was a cowboy in Alberta, and bummed his way back to the Atlantic Coast via train. In WWI, he served as spotter for enemy fleets by plane, and acted as incognito spies (with his wife) for the British, acting a retired couple going through German Ports.

He met his wife on his first White Star voyage. She came back from Sydney as his wife on the trip there.

Yes, I am a bored person. :P

He's not been charged, and its entirely reasonable to try to use legal maneuvers to avoid being charged. It is also understandable that a man who is currently widely despised would want to prevent the public from knowing where he is. But one could still make sure that the prosecutors office knew where you are, and one should come in if they do ultimately decide to charge you. Running says to everyone that you think you'll be convicted and the great majority of judges will allow prosecutors to argue that in court.

I didn't get a chance to post these yesterday, but some of National Review's writers have some excellent pieces regarding John Derbyshire's termination.. This first is Andrew C. McCarthy responding to Mark Steyn (who had earlier botched a reply to McCarthy):

I’ve had my say and I’d like to let it go at that, but since you’ve portrayed me as having argued pretty much the opposite of what I argued, that won’t do.

I, too, am fond of Derb, learn a great deal from most of what he writes, and regret his loss — though not so much that I think he and the public debate have been wronged. Regarding the racialist double-standard, however, I never suggested, nor do I believe, that “them’s the rules and we just have to accept it.” I’ve condemned the racialism of the Obamas, Eric Holder, and plenty of others who make race (and knock-offs like “Islamophobia”) their full-field theory for explaining all phenomena. And I’ve got the grievance industry scars to prove it. What I said in the post to which you refer was that we ought to heap on the Left’s race hucksters the same “disgust” as is currently being heaped on Derb. My point is that, in condemning what is condemnable, we have to condemn all of it, not that we should tolerate the skewed status quo. If that is “insouciance,” then you and I are working off a different definition of insouciance.

I am not insensitive to the concerns you raise. There is a global campaign to repress free expression, and that argues for giving speech an even wider berth than usual. But it doesn’t mean anything goes or that opinion journals should no longer have standards. For NR to have and enforce them is not a surrender to the Left. I get a steady diet of the kind of crap David Weigel is experiencing. So do you. It means nothing. We take it from its source and carry on, unmoved. There is a world of difference, though, between the need to be able to discuss uncomfortable facts about IQ and incarceration, on the one hand, and, on the other, to urge race as a rationale for abandoning basic Christian charity.

True on both counts, but as you said, you can go into hiding and the prosecutors and your own lawyers can still know about it.

It's the fact that he has left the state and cut off contact with his lawyers to the point where they've severed ties with him, and he's talking to the media and making public statements without any input from them either that's the problem. Someone who was truly convinced that they were in the right wouldn't do those things. They'd be right there working alongside their lawyers to be completely on the level.

BREAKING: Tsunami alert for entire Indian Ocean after 8.7 quake hits off Indonesia

A tsunami alert was issued for the entire Indian Ocean Wednesday after a powerful 8.7-magnitude earthquake was recorded off Indonesia's coast.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 20 miles beneath the ocean floor around 308 miles from the provincial capital of Banda Aceh.
The quake is in a similar location and of a similar magnitude to the 9.1-magnitude tremor on Dec. 26, 2004 that triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean, killing 230,000 people, nearly three-quarters of them in Aceh province.
Reports on Twitter said Wednesday's tremors were felt in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and India. High-rise apartments and offices on Malaysia's west coast shook for at least a minute.

A tsunami measuring 17 cm (6.7 inches) has been generated in the Indian Ocean and is headed for the Aceh province of Indonesia after a strong earthquake, a Pacific Tsunami Warning Center official said on Wednesday.

Earlier, an 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia, sending residents fleeing in fear.

Victor Sardina, a geophysicist on duty at the Hawaii-based center, said the total vertical measurement of the wave, according to monitoring gauges, was 35 cm (13.8 inches), making the height 17 cm (6.7 inches).

He did not provide a time estimate for landfall.

Morning Lizardim from the cold and frosty wild north country. A snap freeze has apple growers scrambling to save their crop, but all signs point to a disaster in the making for this year's apple harvest. On a more personal note, the Mrs. Fish is miffed, since she planted her garden last week and now a large portion of it is probably ruined. What's new out there in Lizardia?

At the other end of the scale, we (Southern AL) will have almost no pears this year because we did not get enough chill hours over the winter. Last year the trees broke under the weight of the fruit.

re: #392 Johnny Derp

Mark Steyn has a point:

It's hard to take anything he says seriously when he fails to connect the racism evidenced in the article in question with the author's analysis on racial issues. He takes issues with Derbyshire's conclusions - but only in an intellectual way, and he completely ducks accounting for the influence of Derbyshire's racism. No one else, including the publisher, is responsible for Derbyshire's racism. This is not just a matter of Derbyshire's article getting published - this is a matter of how his racism completely undermines his credibility - again, that's something that Steyn won't address even as he pretends to distance himself intellectually.
